The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, is now featuring an exhibition of photos of 12 modernist landscapes. According to the museum, the George Eastman House, in conjunction with The Cultural Landscape foundation, the organizers of the exhibition, examine 12 “important modernist landscapes” through the lens of ten photographers. The project is as much about ”photography as it’s about landscape.”

Landscape projects in the exhibitition include: Lake Elizabeth (Allegheny Commons, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Boston City Hall Plaza (Boston, Massachusetts), Estates Drive Reservoir (Oakland, California), Heritage Plaza (Heritage Park, Fort Worth,Texas), Kaiser Roof Garden (Kaiser Center, Oakland,California), Manhattan Square Park (Rochester, New York), Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks (Kent, Washington.), Miller Garden (Columbus, Indiana), El (Hato Rey, Puerto Rico), Pacific Science Center Courtyard (Seattle, Washington), Parkmerced (San Francisco, California), and Peavey Plaza (Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, Minnesota).

The photograhers represented in the exhibition are Sam Sweezy, Debra Bloomfield, Lupita Murillo Tinnen, Heather F. Wetzel, Rick McKee Hock, Christopher Rauschenberg, Tyagan Miller, Marisol Diaz, and Tom Fox.

Also, the Cultural Landscape Foundation has just issued a call for nominations for its well-known “Landslide” program. Nominations are due March 31, 2010.

“Since its inception in 2003, the Landslide initiative has spotlighted more than 150 significant at-risk parks, gardens, horticultural features, and working landscapes. This year’s theme will again do so by calling attention to the places that embody our shared landscape heritage.”

Gustafson Guthrie Nichol and Allied Works won a design competition to create a park that will span an Interstate and connect a two-block section of Washington State’s Fort Vancouver national historic site with the City of Vancouver’s downtown. The design will include a ”landscape cap” that will extend south from the existing “Evergreen Boulevard” span over the interstate.

According to The Oregonian, “a central walkway would connect downtown to the historic area. Smaller wood pathways would branch out to various pockets of the park, such as the Northwest Meadow and the reflective pond. Native plants would fill the park, basalt stone paving would create the paths, and recycled auto glass would form transparent fissure walls.” The Columbian added that the design will include “a water wall and ‘Sound Grove’ artwork. Curved steel boughs would swivel on steel posts as wind passes through the artwork. As the boughs move, they would emit low tones and create a harmonic sound.”

The Daily Journal of Commerce Oregon writes that the design is part of the broader plan to replace an Interstate-5 bridge, a “multibillion-dollar Columbia River Crossing project whose future is unclear.” If the bridge does get built, federal rules require the additional landscape cap.

Kathryn Gustafson, ASLA, researched the geology to create a plan for rebuilding what I-5 had destroyed. Gustafson told the Daily Journal of Commerce: “It’s all about the land. When you look at the land of Washington state, it has one of the most diverse geologies in the world.” According to Daily Journal of Commerce, Gustafson examined the “Mount St. Helens lava tubes, violent acts of simultaneous creation and destruction, for inspiration. In the winning concept, the freeway below becomes a grotto, with the forces of nature reshaping the landscape above.”

The design competition jurors said of the winning design: “The design by Gustafson Guthrie Nichol/Allied Works Architecture Team best responds to the vision of the Community Connector. It appropriately respects and celebrates the cultural history of Vancouver, truly connecting the Fort Vancouver National Site to the City. The design concept shows an understanding of the cultural history and significance of this Site. An adaptable design, it enhances the amenities on both sides as they are currently and as they could evolve into the future. The design concept provides a clarity and richness worthy of the vision of the project. It shows a spirit of place that is specific and appropriate for the Northwest. It honors the seasons and biology of the Pacific Northwest landscape and includes an elegant, yet practical, use of water.”

The mayor of Vancouver, Washington State, Royce Pollard, said the design would reconnect the historic site and local community, and undo the damage caused by the highway. “They cut a hole right through the heart of our community. They disconnected our history.”

Now famous for its Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim building, Bilbao continues to come up with unique ideas to revitalize its city center through urban design. According to Metropolis POV, the city commissioned a master plan seven years ago for the Abandoibarra area in the city’s downtown. Bilbao then sponsored BilbaoJardín 2007, “a contest that solicited designs for garden plots of up to 80 square meters (about 860 square feet), to be built on scattered sites throughout the city.” The first competition received some 132 proposals and a total of 27 projects were built. The design competitition was renewed in 2009.

For 2009, Balmori Associates, a firm that worked on the downtown master plan, submitted a park, The Garden That Climbs Stairs. “Sited between two Arata Isozaki towers, the miniature urban park is an arresting combination of native and exotic plants sidling up the steps leading to Santiago Calatrava’s Nervion River Footbridge. (Seen from above, it kind of looks like a cross between The Blob and the High Line.)”

I am in love. With Land Art, that is. What is land art? A bit of an art history lesson for the peopl

I am in love.

With Land Art, that is.

What is land art?
A bit of an art history lesson for the people:
Land art (also known as Earth Works or Earth Art) is an art movement that began in the US around the 1960’s-1970’s, in which landscape and the work of art are inextricably linked. Sculptures are not placed in the landscape; rather the landscape is the very means of their creation. The works exist in nature and are left to change and alter with natural conditions.

A few very famous Land Art arists include: Andy Goldsworthy, Robert Smithson and Christo and Jean-Claude among others. One current Land Art artists that I love is Richard Schilling (also known as escher).

I’ll stop boring everyone with the history of it and just say….
this is something I intend to pursue.

On the grounds of Boughton House in Northamptonshire, UK, Kim Wilkie Associates, a landscape architecture firm, created Orpheaus, a modern composition and excavation in “one of the great English houses with one of the country’s most powerful landscapes,” writes Building Design. The 7-meter deep composition create a visual narrative of the descent of Orpheus, “recalling the image, from the Cocteau movie, of Jean Marais stepping into the Underworld by dissolving a mirror with his fingertips.”

Building Design adds that the changing landscape of Boughton House reflects the evolving political fortunes of the Montagus. “The impression they leave on the visitor is of a complicated layering: periods of power and of diffidence, of neglect and immense activity, of great plans not completed, of enthusiastic focus, of disdain for fashion and, occasionally, of decline. To some extent this pattern reflects the political and social fortunes of the Montagus as they came and went over 300 years, but also the distractions presented by three other family houses, all in Scotland. It is at least possible that the odd duke never himself visited Boughton, and certain that many never thought of it as home.”

Kim Wilkie’s work is both hidden and monumental. “Orpheus may be at its best on one’s own: it is not then just an elegantly proportioned piece of furniture in a very big park, however good it is in this role. That anything so monumental should in fact need to be discovered, and best on foot, is disarming; and as the ground yawns on approach, there is the sharp, impossible recognition that the void of Orpheus has been literally expressed to form the half-pyramid beyond the canal. This is the key effect.”

“Art too has a chance if the museums open themselves to the electrician who makes the fuse-board and the metal worker who makes the screw. Wonderful things happen outside art and the galleries should be open to these things”

Through the sense of partaking in the agricultural processes explored, I have opened up to the notion of seasonal time that I connect to a type of spiral, a cycle that also moves forward.

“In The Greenhouse, we don’t speak about coexistence, but we are doing it. Arab and Jewish kids work together and through their mutual projects, they create something good. The children, who are young, don’t know about the conflict and they don’t care about it really…”

“My ability to take part in the agricultural and biological processes in the Greenhouse involves a quasi-naive concentration on them as the only way to study them. Thus I find new types of aesthetics, language, in other words – art that is revealed through practice… The research I am currently interested pertains to the plankton layer, a plant nourished by the process of photosynthesis. The nets that are hanged on top of the pond become a potential colony the moment they will be washed by water. That algae inhere the potent appearance of such places in which time has left its mark; places that embrace tiny life forms, (green) evidence of the sun’s constant presence and the traces of time that has already passed, and that is passing right now, from here onward… “

The night before last, I was told to “go and make some art” by James, my husband. It is great to have such encouragement to do the things I really want to do but often don’t do on my own. I have been thinking about the land art project we are doing along the walking routes in the Burren and North Clare, so I went over to the turf basket and started playing around with bits of turf! (one of the walks is on a bog road) First I created this peace sign inspired by James. I have been reading the children “The Little Prince”. I really love the book, it influenced the little stars which I cut out of banana skins.

Banana skin stars on turf in the Secret Gallery between Doolin and The Cliffs of Moher.

Some of the reasons that I put little yellow stars on turf may be because:

I have been reading “The Little Prince”.

The following day we had a conversation with our friend, she was talking about it being the time of stars, as they have more effect on us, maybe because we see the stars more as it gets dark earlier. It is also the time of year that there are more shooting stars.

Stars are very big compared to pieces of turf yet they are similar; the turf is a tiny nugget of the earth which is a planet too.

I remember night time bog walks as a child looking up at the stars.

Apparently there may be some moon dust on the earth after they crash into the moon. I hope it does not upset things too much on the moon or for us as a consequence of us interfering with the mighty Moon.

Maybe because it was playful, and I liked the contrast of the smooth banana skins and the rough turf. Who knows!

Peace to all

PHOTOGRAPHY MARKET TRENDS

At a seminar held in London in September 2009 organised by ArtInsight three London-based photography market experts from a fund, a gallery and a major auction house shared their views on the most promising opportunities and interesting trends in photography today.

We attended the seminar and have teased out surprising facts and intriguing assertions for you to mull.

Background to the photography market

First photography auction was held in 1971 initiated by Sotheby’s.

Over the past 15 years, this medium has out-performed every other major medium including sculpture, prints, painting and sculpture.

In its early history this sector of the art market encountered resistance with buyers concerned that the works were not unique and therefore were not a viable investment. The development of controlled limited editioning in the seventies helped allay fears and the market saw steady but modest growth.

This all changed in 1989/1990 which marked the 150th anniversary of the introduction of photography and the market experienced a 45% leap in sales. Further steady growth marked the next 15 years until 2005 after which sales took off. 2006 saw the highest price ever paid for a photograph …US$2.6m.

Today photography accounts for 2% of total auction sales compared with 75% for painting and 11% for drawing and watercolour.

Photography has proved to be one of the least volatile sectors in the art market.

9 photographs have broken the US$1m level including work by Japanese-American Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Why has interest in and sales of photography increased?

Nobody know for sure but various reasons have been offered including relative affordability, the introduction of controlled editioning, a loyal customer base and increased market transparency.

Photography trends

There is growing interest and, arguably, opportunities in the following four subsectors of photography:

fashion and celebrity photography

reportage-style photography

phot0graphs recording ephemeral art forms such as performance art and land art

“slice of life” photography – a vernacular style dealing the everyday real life as its subject

Brett Rogers of the Photographers Gallery noted the development of a sub-genre she called “constructive fiction” which blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction crossing the techniques of the photo-journalist and fine artist.

In an interesting twist she forsees gains for collectors of photography books and advises buying first editions and examples of rare, early books. Explaining that books usually feature the very best of an artist’s work, photography books can deliver enormous joy as well as potential financial dividends.

Matt Carey-Williams, Director of Christies Post-War and Contemporary Art recommended photographs from the 1930s to 1950s – a seminal period in the development of photography as an art form – and which he believes are “massively undervalued”.

Global opportunities in photography

During question time, the panel was asked where they saw opportunities in emerging countries and the following recommendations were made.

Visit Sharjah and Biennial and Art Dubai to see interesting work from the Middle East and Iran.

Explore Central Asian countries.

Korea has huge potential.

Female Indian artists are producing some interesting work.

It was agreed that Chinese photography seemed “a little old” though Matt Carey-Williams said that it would look “remarkably fresh again in twenty years”.

Current challenges facing the market

Conservation of photographs- One of the most pressing challenges today is developing guidelines for acceptable conservation work. Colour photographs fade and some artists and galleries will ”refresh” (reprint) the works and some refuse. As museums are beginning to collect contemporary photography on a large scale, panellists felt that it was likely that this issue would be resolved

Is photography a separate genre? – Recognising that artists now work in many media. there are questions about whether it is appropriate or useful to dedicate parts of the market such as galleries or funds exclusively to photography. Matt Carey-Williams explained that as an auctioneer he regards artists as artists first and photographers second. Brett Rogers noted that this trend away from a specialisation in photography is due to a change in the way art schools teach. A consequence of a broadening of focus though is that less attention is given to technique. Image is more important than technique for young photographers today.

(Editor’s note: It is may also be a sign of market maturity – specialist focus marketing and promotion is necessary for an emerging section of the market. Today many if not most contemporary art galleries show photography as a matter of course. Just as photography is integral to and fully-accepted in today’s art world on equal terms with other media we at Art Radar are looking forward to the day Asian art is given equal weight with other geographies in art media and we can drop Asia from our name).
