I have never been very comfortable in front of a camera or a microphone or especially when having to

I have never been very comfortable in front of a camera or a microphone or especially when having to speak to an audience. How can I ever forget that time in the mid-eighties, at the height of Malta’s political and constitutional crisis, when as a committee member of the Partit Demokratiku Malti (PDM) I was asked to be one of the speakers at a public meeting to be given in Pjazza Regina (Queen’s Square) in Valletta. I was already in quite a state while waiting for my turn to step on the podium but the real trembling fit started the moment I began my talk on pluralism in politics. No doubt the assembled group, which numbered no more than 25 curious passers-by plus the odd supporter and inevitable heckler, must have noticed my shivering hands in sharp contrast to the warm early summer weather.

So when I was approached to be interviewed on behalf of the school I work for (IELS), my initial reaction was to say no. It was only on the insistence of some colleagues of mine that I relented. There was no prepared speech or carefully thought out answers here, just a few minutes preparatory work with the interviewer and the camera started rolling. This is why I am particularly chuffed with the result.

Hopefully my words or my looks will work their magic and attract more students to the school!

Today was a landmark day for Elijah. He read a book by himself for the first time. Granted, the book

Today was a landmark day for Elijah. He read a book by himself for the first time. Granted, the book had a very limited vocabulary, carefully selected from a very limited group of letters, but it’s still a milestone. I hope that someday he has the passion for reading that I had as a child. (I wonder whatever happened to that.)

In history today, we studied foods from the Age of Exploration. We decided that the sailors’ diet of rotten crackers and beer was probably something best left to history. It was a good reminder to us to keep up our intake of fruit and vegetables, though. Fruit, especially, is expensive here, but Tiffany does a wonderful job of making sure we have a well-balanced diet.

In science, we finally left earth science and moved on to biology. I’m not sure I would have known the six characteristics that distinguish living organisms from non-living items, but I do now! Elijah did a little work identifying those characteristics, and then sorting some pictures into living and non-living categories. We also checked out some of the diversity of living things at EcoKids.

In math, we worked on “number between” in the 30 to 40 range, as well as reviewing counting to 70, counting pennies and dimes, simple addition, and writing the 40s.

We also started a new read-aloud book tonight The Light at Tern Rock. It’s recommended for ages 8-12, so I think some of it’s going over Elijah’s head, but it’s short, so we’ll read it this week and then move on.

In my language studies, I finished a book with Ariunbolor today. We’ve been reading the miracles of Jesus. Now, I think we may try a book that has a number of cultural and historical readings in it. Ariunbolor had never seen the book before, but I showed it to her and she seemed willing to give it a try. I feel like I usually have to direct the classes that she teaches, because she doesn’t come loaded with teaching ideas.

In my class with Yendii today, we worked through part of a page in a dictionary. That usually goes pretty slowly, as each word sends us off on some tangential conversation. I’ll think of some example from the Bible and share it with her, or she’ll give some anecdote somehow related to the word. (Yendii asked today how I could remember where so many things were in the Bible. Having a search engine helps, but I told her that I had read the Bible through for the first time when I was 7 years old, and then a number of times after that. She was flabbergasted.) For homework, I used each word that we studied in a sentence, and then started reading the next theme in our book. It had a very long sentence near the beginning, and I got so bogged down on it that I never got the rest of the theme read. It seems that it has something to do with the seasons, and a couple of girls in the countryside. All very beautifully written, just mostly unintelligible.

Just recently I got in touch with Jose Mendez, who is one of the brains behind Academia Columbus in Playa del Carmen.
I asked him to put together a few words about the school and its philosophies, here’s what he says about it.

Spanish in
Latin America“
Philosophy of the Academia Columbus

“Living and learning Spanish” is not just a slogan, but what we actually do. We do not just teach Spanish to our students, but we offer them the opportunity to use their acquired skills in real-life situations: to “live” Spanish. In our view this is a precondition for achieving maximum learning success.

“Living the language” goes well beyond user-friendly and effective tuition. It encompasses the opportunity to live in well-selected host families, offering not just accommodation, but also an excellent opportunity to apply the newly learnt language skills in everyday conversation. Host-family stays therefore form an integral part of the “living and learning Spanish” philosophy. In addition, we offer our students the opportunity through our cultural program and through our excursions to gain a greater insight into the diversity of the Mexican culture while learning Spanish.
– Jose Mendez, Academia Columbus, Playa del Carmen

I do absolutely believe that this is one of the best ways to learn Spanish. The first place I worked at in Playa del Carmen, though I am fortunate enough to be fluent in Italian, I was forced to learn the language. We were 20 employees in the office, and we were only two foreigners! Meaning, it was either alienate or integrate. I chose the latter. A language course in a class room can only teach you so much, but living in it, will teach you everything!
Check out their website by clicking on this sentence

Coming tomorrow, an entry on one of my absolute favorite places in Playa del Carmen! complete with the Thanksgiving menu!
Stay tuned.

Norman R. Augustine once said: “Motivation will almost always beat mere talent.” And there is hardly any doubt about it.

Someone has said very aptly that learning has no age. Especially when it comes to learning the languages then one birth might be very small to become master of the language. Language is not all about speaking and understanding one particular language, it is in fact an identity of the masses that speak it. Language is not limited to words or grammar in fact it goes beyond the boundaries of text books. A language forms the basis of culture and it can relate us to the history of the country that speaks it.

Most of us would like to learn the foreign language but hardly some people get a chance to make their dream come true. However, to understand the beauty of a foreign language the best way out is to visit the place that speaks that language and learn it from there. Such a language study abroad programme takes you’re learning to another level and let you experience the beauty of the language and how it has given birth to the culture of the population that speaks it.

ESL – Schools is one such institution that offers several language study programmes to people of all age group. It has a huge network of partner language schools that are famous for their esteemed language courses around the world. One can never get such an opportunity to learn a language so deeply. Having, sound knowledge of an additional foreign language can be of great help for you at your professional front. This can open wide work opportunities for you. Moreover, if you have done such a language course by actually visiting the destination that speaks it then this helps you at personal level. Having exposed to different country, you can understand the different cultural values and it helps you to sharpen your personality.

If you want to learn German language then ESL is offering German Course Switzerland. It is one of its own kind language courses which give you an opportunity to learn German language at several destinations in Switzerland. ESL has the affiliation with two German schools in Switzerland. One school is at St. Michel, the prestigious college of the Switzerland which is situated near the world famous waterfront of Zuger See and the other school is situated in the beautiful environment of Ascona.

The German language courses at the ESL- Schools are primarily designed for the children of age group between ten to seventeen years. These courses are German summer camps, designed for a short duration. Children get an opportunity to learn the language and enjoy their summer vacations in the beautiful aura of Switzerland.

Just last night, I was telling Tiffany that we probably ought to check our passports to see whether our student visas expired after one year or two. Then today, the director of our school came to us and started explaining to us the hoops we would have to jump through to get our second year student visa. She explained in Mongolian, of course, which was extremely helpful. Later, she came in and gave me a sample letter that I needed to write out by hand, filling in all the appropriate blanks. It is basically a request saying that it takes a long time to learn Mongolian, and that I need to study for another year. It’s a tad ironic, because I have to write it in perfect Mongolian, which tends to give the lie to the idea that I need to study for another year. I asked the director if I had to handwrite it, and she indicated that I did. If I typed it on the computer, she said, they would just think she wrote it. (Which, of course, she did. I just copied it.)

I have seen these handwritten affidavits on several other occasions. Once, for example, I signed my name to a handwritten full page, having no idea what it said, just that a friend had written it. That was just to get some boxes out of customs. I think that, in America, most bureaucrats would look askance at handwritten document, especially those created by foreigners who are still relatively new to writing with a different symbol set. Here, though, it seems to be the mark of authenticity.

By the way, in Mongolia, almost everyone writes in cursive, which is not, of course, the first symbol set you study. So, for the first several months, you can read nothing that anyone writes. Then, you start to learn cursive. I can do a reasonable job at it now, although I still make a few errors. I almost never write in cursive in English, so it was a bit of a learning curve for me.

Well, it’s finally happened. After a decade of bickering and 2-steps-forward-3-steps-back nego

Well, it’s finally happened. After a decade of bickering and 2-steps-forward-3-steps-back negotiations, Mongolia today signed an agreement to allow Ivanhoe Mines and Rio Tinto to exploit Oyu Tolgoi, ostensibly one of the largest copper and gold mines in the world. There has been surprisingly little fanfare over an event that has the potential to significantly change the lives of the average Mongolian. Here are a few of the highlights from an article in the Sydney Morning Herald:

The nation’s employment rate is tipped to jump more than 10 percent. The mine will employ as many as 3,000 workers, with thousands more finding jobs along the supply chain.

Oyu Tolgoi is expected to produce 450,000 tons of copper and 330,000 ounces of gold annually over 35 years.

Per capita disposable income is expected to rise by 11.5 percent.

The project could boost Mongolia’s per capita GDP, at about 1,800 US dollars in 2008, to 15,000 US dollars by 2015.

If you haven’t bought stock in one of these mining companies, you may have already missed the boat, but hopefully Mongolians will be able to keep corrupt politicians from pocketing the bulk of this windfall.

On a more mundane topic, I started classes with a new teacher today. My former teacher, Nyamaa, has been working on a deal to go to Japan for a few weeks. On Thursday, she told me dejectedly that they were not going to allow her to come to Japan unless she had a translator (since she speaks no Japanese or English) and overcame some other insuperable obstacle. The next afternoon, she walked into my classroom and showed me her visa to go to Japan and informed me that she was leaving Saturday morning at 6 a.m. So… she’s in Japan. It seemed a little sudden, but that seems to be how Mongolians roll.

There are two main parts of the self that we need to acquaint our selves with. Physical, which includes our chemical and biological make up. And mental, which includes our emotional, and psychological aspects. A thorough knowledge of the self should be a high priority in the education of human beings in stages of life. Understanding and learning about the self on a wholistic level adds leverage to our ability to make better choices leading to a more enjoyable and prosperous life. Remember, we are here to enjoy! But dont forget that the balance comes naturally through experiences that might hinder our enjoyment temporarily. For example, look at the way muscles work. When muscle is used beyond it’s ability, muscle fibers tear apart and reguvinate themselves using the proper muscle growth components such as protein. Our ability as humans to adapt to stimulus is one that is most amazing and should be taught to us earlier in life. We do learn as we go and adjust in order to survive, but we should concentrate our efforts on becoming more familiar with our own strengths and weaknesses in order to strive.

Consume Life represents everything in life that makes our limited stay on earth worth while. It is a paradigm, an attitude, a way of life. Acceptance, forgiveness, and moderation are words describing what shapes this paradigm, with practical, objective, and open minded education spearheading this new age research, concentrating on the improving the human experience. We as a people must come to realize that much of our population bases daily way of life on literature such as the Torah, Bible, and Koran that were written and put together thousands of year before our time now. We need to take into consideration the time period they were written in, and compare human beings way of life in terms of geography, education, literacy, communication, transportation. After reading and learning about many world religions, I have come to realize that religions served an important sociopolitical and economical role that gave leverage for educated, and experienced people to sustain a more wealthy lifestyle, enjoying the fruits of life. While the less educated hard working lower classes of people had to be thankful and content for what God will have in store for them in the after life. It is a subjectivly conservative lifestyle that limits the amount of experience and knowledge. Paired with the notion that God will send us to hell if we dont follow this lifestyle, and considering that this was communicated by word of mouth. Not to mention the language in which it was written and what was lost when translated to the language that people now read. Most importantly, my experience has shown me that the most religious, or conservative is usually the most hypocritical because it goes against human’s nature to hold back from experiencing something that is chemically causing a better emotional state of mind. Look at the multitude of church priests and child molestation cases. Life isn’t meant to be a daily struggle, yet moderation is the key for balance. Life is a blend of wonderful experiences balanced by some unpleasant ones that gives our lives a purpose, meaning and direction leading to “Happiness”.

First, the world needs to recognize the underlying problems causing conflicts world wide. From my experience, I have always found that people are much more critical of others, whether it be appearances, actions, beliefs, morals, or just plain way of life. We form conclusions about people we see who are similar to, or different from us, based soley on appearance. All visible differences are noticed quickly such as color of skin, hair, eyes, or even the style of clothes. And from observing these characteristics, we form conclusions in our minds about other aspects of the person that are often untrue. I believe that Ethnocentism is man kind’s most important obstacle to overcome before we as humans are able to transcend beyond our lazy, over populated, economically unstable, disease infested, burned out world.

The power of word-of-mouth in language travel The power of word-of-mouth (recommendation by friends

The power of word-of-mouth in language travel

The power of word-of-mouth (recommendation by friends and family) is the most credible for language travellers. (Atme.org)

There are countless research studies, reports and books about the «power of word of mouth» at the moment of choosing a product or service. Well, the reason it’s quite obvious: customers who write reviews base their report on their personal experience, they are on the same side as potential customers. This simple fact makes products or service reviews a reliable source of information.

Personally I seek reviews for anything from office products I need to buy to a movie I may want to watch. I’ve learned from experience that though reviews are an invaluable source of information, caution must be exercised nonetheless. We are all different and we are all biased, and the personal experience from one person may be totally different from that of the next person.

This is also true for the «language travel» industry. Students come from different cultural backgrounds, with a wide range of needs and expectations, and each with their own very personal traits. Two language students may judge very differently the exact same language course given at a school by the same teachers, with the same offer of cultural activities. A great experience for one may not be so great for the other, and their assessment may be solely based on the relationship developed with their class mates, or on how much fun they had…

If you are about to choose a language school based on ex students’ reviews, how much fun they had and how many friends they made is obviously important… after all, fun is an essential aspect of learning and it makes for a memorable experience. Still, don’t forget that you will be investing on learning a foreign language or on improving your skills, so you should also look for evaluations on:

Academic quality: language courses with a good balance of grammar, vocabulary, oral practice, opportunities to use the language in real-life contexts, updated and interesting class material, and, most importantly, student-centred lessons.

Professionalism: teachers with solid experience in foreign language teaching and the ability to create a good learning atmosphere in an intercultural class.

Observance of overall good practices (e.g. truthful advertising, customer commitment, sustainable travel, good employment standards, general transparency, etc.).

Comments on these points may be harder to find… so keep them in mind during your experience, so that you will have something to say about them when it’s your turn to share .
