Are you planning to visit Rio de Janeiro, but don’t know how many days you should stay in the city and what should you experience during your stay? We have retailed you an itineray including some of the most interesting attractions of Rio de Janeiro. Of course all of them may not interest you, but our aim is to give you a complete example of all the possibilities.

DAY 1:

• Head early in morning to the Corcovado train station (opens at 08.30 am) and get to the top where the world famous Christ statue is located. After having visited Corcovado head to the downtown of Rio de Janeiro and catch one of those old fashioned trams up to the artistic neighborhood of Santa Teresa. This picturesque uphill neighborhood is an ideal place to enjoy a delicious and traditional Brazilian meal. After your lunch enjoy the views from Parque das Ruinas and visit the museum of Characa do Ceu with images of Rio de Janeiro before it became a city of millions and millions of inhabitants. After having explored Santa Teresa, the next stop is one of the most traditional landmarks of Rio de Janeiro, the Sugar Loaf Mountain. Visiting Sugar Loaf Mountain in the late afternoon has the advantage of both daylight and sunset, which is a spectacle itself!

DAY 2:

• 

  Botanical Garden

  Start you day by having a walk in the Botanical Garden, which is a real oasis in the middle of such a huge city as Rio de Janeiro. After having enjoyed your lunch participate in one of the guided Favela tours. These tours are an excellent way to see the other face of Rio de Janeiro and especially to understand a little bit better the causes of social problems in the city. In the evening participate in a rehearsal of a samba school (available from August to February) and bring a piece of carnival feeling with you.

DAY 3:

• Star your day with emotions and try hang gliding admiring the views from the top of Pedra da Gavea and landing to the beach of Praia do Pepino. If you are not into adventures, have a walk in the downtown of Rio de Janeiro visiting the museums, churches and monasteries, or just have a relax at one of the world famous beaches. After having enjoyed your lunch have a refreshing swim in the sea and get prepared to more emotions in soccer game at the world’s biggest stadium Maracanã. If you are not into soccer, enjoy shopping in the fashionable stores of Ipanema and have a walk in the shores of the lake Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. The restaurants of Parque dos Patins located in the edges the lake are also excellent places to enjoy your dinner with live music.

DAY 4:

• Start a day with a visit to the National Park of Tijuca located within the city of Rio de Janeiro. You can choose either a sightseeing tour that takes you to the most interesting points by car or take a light hike up to the highest peak of Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca Peak. After the tour enjoy your lunch at one of the many sea front restaurants in Copacabana and have leisure stroll inside of the Fort of Copacabana (situated at the end of it), which is also an excellent place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a delicious desert at the famous coffee house Confeitaria Colombo.

DAY 5:

• Take a day trip outside of Rio de Janeiro and get an idea of the beauty of this state. Tours (private or scheduled) to Búzios or to tropical island of Angra dos Reis are ideal options and a schooner cruise in the destination allows you to enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters of these regions. Enjoy your last night in Rio de Janeiro at one of the samba clubs of Lapa, the most popular neighborhood of nightlife. Easygoing atmospheare, traditional live samba and delicious snacks/dinner are guaranteed, no matter which of the many bars you choose.

Obs. Activities such as Samba school rehearsals and Soccer games are not available everyday, so check the schedules and modify the plan according to them.

Among all the vibrant neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, Lapa has held on to an aura of historical soul and the vibrant spontaneity of parties untouched by commercial tourism. One of the hidden treasures of a Brazil, Lapa is a small, gorgeous district once known as the “Montmartre of the Tropics.” The town is centered on the Largo da Lapa, a picturesque plaza of architecture which barely survived centuries of intermittent periods of progress and civil unrest. One of Lapa’s most famous attractions is the Carioca aqueduct, also known as the Arcos da Lapa, a remarkable structure built in the mid-18th century by colonial authorities. Since the end of the 19th century, the aqueduct has served as a bridge for a tram that connects the city center with the Santa Teresa neighborhood. Another famous historical site is the Passeio Público, Brazil’s oldest public park. Built in 1779 to glorify the new colonial capital, the park is also one of the oldest public parks in the Americas. During 20th century, the whole historical center of Rio—including the Passeio Público —fell into decay. In 2001 the city’s municipal government began a project to renovate the park and restore its historic beauty.

There’s little to recommend in Lapa during the day, except for the Escada de Selaron and the antique stores on the Rio de Lavradio (great turn-of-the-20th century antiques at really low prices can be found there). When the party dies down, visitors can walk to the Lapa staircase (Escada Selaron) and view the work of Chilean painter Selaron. The vivid stairway is a tribute to Brazil’s local artists. Since 1983, when the 215 steps were covered in blue, green and yellow tiles (the colors of the Brazilian flag), Selaron has constantly changed them to include contributions from more than 60 countries around the world. Selaron calls the stairway his “great madness” and claims he will never stop working on it until the day he dies.

Lapa Breaks Through

In recent years, Lapa has exploded as the hip place to go for vibrant nightlife. On either end of the Lapa night scene are unique nightclubs, Carioca de Gema and Rio Scenarium. Carioca de Gema is a renaissance of the downtown of Rio in one of its hippest posts. In these clubs, 19th and 18th century architecture meets Rio’s cool, artsy crowd. The streets are lined with sidewalk cafes where cariocas gather for hours to indulge in chi chi chi (banter and chatter). The district’s street parties are among the most famous of Rio’s party attractions, and crowds gather in droves Thursday through Saturday from around 10 am until 4 or 5 pm as a celebration of what it is to be a carioca. Partiers will wander from street bar to street bar, enjoying the music and the unique vibes of the city. Between the clubs and the street parties, the district comes alive with thousands of Generation X cariocas out for a good time, a couple of caipirinhas, and a lot of paquera (flirting). You’ll find all sorts of entertainment lining the streets—from rock bands and hip hop to samba circles, the parties encompass all aspects of carioca culture. Cariocas recognize Lapa as the site where samba was reborn. Away from the often jading middle-class nightlife, the streets of Lapa come alive with music of local musicians who have resurrected a lost art.

Rio Scenarium

“When the people rent my apartments ask where to head for night life I always tell them: On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays it’s Lapa,” says Dan Babush, president of RentinRio.com. “There’s something with great music for everyone—from Gen X to Gen Y to Boomers. A couple of caipirinhas and you samba without a care and everyone will be teaching you new steps.”

“Rio Scenarium is particularly interesting,” says Dan, “as it is loaded with old antiques that are not for sale, paintings from years before, and three floors where you can wander around amazing artifacts from Rio’s past, along with one of the best samba scenes in Rio.”

Ideally, Lapa deserves three nights: One night for the Rio Scenarium area; one night for Deco do Rato, an area which is excellent to bop around (have the taxi drop you in front of Theatro Odisséia); one night for Lapa 40° on Rua do Riachuelo, the hot new place for samba. Rio Scenarium is a great place for Boomers and Gen Xers to experience samba. Next door to Rio Scenarium is Santo Scenarium, a more Gen X and Gen Y club which plays less samba and has more of a new beat. Boomers will also like Estrela da Lapa and Carioca da Gema—but there is something for everyone in Lapa and it will take no time to find it.

“Chris Nogueiro, writer of Rio for Partiers, says, “Lapa is something that happened out of nowhere. Out of a completely dead area and dead scene grew a particularly hot expression of Rio’s carefree way of being. And it stuck. Lapa is on its way towards being a world-class nightspot area.”

The choice of Rio de Janeiro to host the Olympics in 2016 further encouraged tourism in the city, which also host games of the World Cup 2014. The prediction of the Municipal Tourism for this summer season is to receive about 2.5 million visitors, who must spend about U.S. $ 1.876 billion.

The estimate was disclosed by the municipal secretary of Tourism, Antonio Pedro Figueira de Mello, during the inauguration of a tourist information office on Copacabana Beach. According to him, only for the New Year are expected arrivals of eight ocean liners, carrying 25 thousand tourists, mostly foreigners.

According to data from the Bureau for the New Year are expected this year 621 thousand tourists, with revenues of $ 449 million. In last year’s edition, were 612 thousand visitors, generating $ 444 million.

Later this year, will open three more tourist information: the Santos Dumont Airport, on the beach in Leblon and Barra da Tijuca. Each unit will have attendants in English and Spanish that will offer materials such as maps and brochures, as well as provide other detailed information, such as hotel chains and restaurants. The central area of the city that welcomes tourists but does not have a proper place, will be contemplated only in the next year, with a unit in the region of Lapa.

Interrompo o breve hiato deste blog para anunciar que vou participar da próxima Hey Ladies! Todos por aqui sabem do carinho que tenho por esta festa e pelas meninas que a realizam (DJ Bree, deFatima e Silvia Paz). É uma honra fazer minha estreia “nas carrapetas” convidada por gente tão querida.

Pois há dois anos colocando as garotas cariocas para dançar, a Hey Ladies encerra o ano de 2009 com mais uma noite de indie rock, eletro e muitos hits. A edição especial de fim de ano acontece no dia 05 de dezembro, no Cine Lapa, sob o comando das DJs deFatima e Silvia Paz e sua seleção sempre campeã, que costuma trazer Phoenix, The Organ, Magic Numbers, Lily Allen, MGMT, Amy Winehouse, Bjork, Morrissey, Mika, Elastica…

Reforçando o time e aproveitando a oportunidade de ser DJ por uma noite, prometo rock dançante e um set-vingança com bandas que não costumam tocar na noite (e que sempre quis ouvir nas pistas!).

In the evening we went to Berenice’s birthday party next to Lake Rodrigo de Freitas. Berenice is one of the friendly Brazilian staff working in the reception at our hostel (Bamboo hostel). Earlier that day we had talked to Imran and Sadiq, two awesome fellas we got to know during the Salar de Uyuni trip in Bolivia. We reunited at the birthday party which were being held at an excentric tree hut bar with no walls. The whole bar was surrounded by torches and in the little tree hut toilet they had music, blacklight and all kinds of exotic plants growing up the walls. It was like your own private disco!

The bar arrangement was quite peculiar as you would register all your drinks to a number on a tree plate (the tree plate acted as your bar tab) that someone in the bar crew gave you. Only flaw with their system was that they never registered the number nor the plate to your name or credit card.. meaning that by the end of the night it was just a matter of walking away from the astronomical bar tab with your wooden plate safely placed in your pocket Free drinks – isje feil!

At about 1am, and heaps of drinks later, we went off to Lapa – an old bohemian neighborhood. More recently, Rio has been an important center for the revival of traditional samba music, especially around Lapa. What met us when arriving Lapa, was a crazy street party with thousands of people that can only be compared to a massive nightly music festival! Some of the streets were completely packed with people. We were standing in awe on this square next to a huge wall with aqueduct arches. We joined the massive and intense street party while moving along the arches. In almost each arch there was a group of people playing samba music and loads of people dancing, yelling and bouncing around, having a good time. I had never, ever seen anything like this and Berenice told me that these kind of parties was common on Fridays in Lapa – What an incredible party district!

While moving along with the crowd, we suddenly stumbled upon the infamous Escadaria Selarón (the Selarón’s Stairs) in sort of a back alley. This incredibly colorful staircase in the Lapa neighborhood has appeared in numerous music videos as i.e. Snoop dogg ft. Pharrel – Beautiful, U2 - Walk On. The staircase is the work of the Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón as a tribute to the Brazilian people. He is constantly changing it so that it is an ever evolving piece of art. Originally, tiles for the work were scavenged from various construction sites and piles of urban waste found on the Rio streets. However, today most of the tiles are donated by visitors from all around the world. Altogether there are 250 stairs measuring 125 metres long, which are covered in over 2000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world!

We then continued down to one of the many bars and night clubs and went inside on of them. This one played old school techno mixed with samba music – a bit strange combination, but it didn’t matter we were ready to party. We stayed there for an hour or two. During this time Chris & Mary left because a raving made mad threatened to beat up Chris while he was in the toilet and kept pounding on his bathroom stall door! The rest of us continued partying in the crowded streets of Lapa till 6 in the morning. Partying in the streets were actually a lot better and more fun than inside any nightclub. There were music everywhere and everyone seemed to having the time of their life! I just wish I had brought my camera to capture any of this, but I was too afraid to loose it to bring it along. Imran brought his camera, but it got broken at the start of the night, so unfortunately we have no footage of this night.

Then we headed off to a pizza restaurant to grab a snack. When we arrived at the restaurant it was packed! Packed 6.15am! Everyone at the restaurant was drunk and singing, while waiters went from table to to table taking order like everything was perfectly normal and it was in the middle of the day. Business as usual. This was all just very weird. We had our food and got back at the hostel at about 7am – What a great night!

Minha vida mudou completamente neste último mês.

Desde que nos casamos, eu e o Diógenes planejamos trabalhar por um tempo e depois levar uma vida mais simples, num lugar mais tranquilo. A princípio nossos planos eram 5 anos de trabalho, mas felizmente, com 2 anos pudemos fazer a mudança.
Escolhemos algumas cidades e optamos pela Lapa, no Paraná – 65 km de Curitiba.

Escolhemos ela por diversas razões, proximidade da capital, de Matinhos, por ser tranquila e atender nossas expectativas.
Já faz 3 semanas que estamos aqui e gostando muito.

Agora que estamos terminando de organizar as coisas e em breve quero retornar aos meus trabalhos.

Fiz um casamento e uma gestante nesse tempo de transição, assim que der posto umas fotinhos aqui!

O Hutúz é o principal evento sobre Hip Hop no Brasil, agilizado pela Central Única da Favela (CUFA), busca dar voz para a galera da periferia e mostrar as diferentes culturas para uma maior integração social e cultural.

É assim que pode ser resumido a 2ª OpaLapa, realizada na cidade de Lapa – PR.

Com 227 carros presentes (entre Opalas e Caravans) tivemos o maior encontro de Opalas já realizado na região sul do País, consagrando-se assim, novamente, como referência quanto a encontros da nossa região. Com uma exepcional organização, o evento com certeza não poderia ter sido melhor. Atrativos inovadores, como a cronologia dos Opalas de 1969 a 1992, foram um charme a parte. A bela cidade de Lapa, com seu cento histórico também contribuiu para aumentar ainda mais o glamour do evento.

Saímos para um passeio com o Patrick na semana passada e acabamos numa praça aqui perto de casa. A Lapa como de costume tem muitas praças e algumas delas apresentam algumas curiosidades.

Embora esteja completamente abandonada, o lugar nos apresentou uma energia deliciosa. A Lu, como de costume correu para abraçar uma árvore, enquanto o Patrick correu para fazer xixi em todas elas (rs).

No centro dessa praça tem uma árvore e curiosamente tem uma simbologia solar por ali. Parte de mim ao pisar ali desejou que a praça continuasse assim: abandonada. Pode parecer bobagem minha dizer isso, mas é que a prefeitura tem feito manutenção nas praças e descaracterizando totalmente os lugares…

Por vezes nós nem prestamos atenção ao que temos ao nosso redor em termos de arte e conhecimento; isso para não falar de cultura sendo apresentada, ou melhor, que está ali ao alcance de alguns passos e nem nos damos conta de sua importância.

Terça-feira, após o almoço, resolvi voltar a explorar as cercanias da Lapa, que como todos sabem é o bairro boêmio do Rio de Janeiro. Mesmo que esteja em andamento um processo de revitalização desse pedaço da cidade, o ar de decadência com elegância ainda é o mais percebido. Este ar não é no sentido pejorativo. É um certo charme, eu diria. Pois bem, decidi entrar na igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Lapa do Desterro para ver o seu interior.

Eu já sabia que a construção tem como estilo o barroco, que tanto marcou o século XVIII, muito mais na região das Minas Gerais, mas que aqui no Rio também é percebido, bastando apenas apurar a visão e procurar nos lugares certos. Ao entrar constatei que é realmente uma bela construção e que foi feita com todo esmero dos artistas e arquitetos da época. O que eu não imaginava é que ouviria música sacra – barroca – vinda de um órgão como aqueles que, imagino, Johann Sebastian Bach utilizava para criar suas músicas.

Timidamente perguntei a uma pessoa que estava próxima e que pertencia a administração da igreja, se era possível fotografar. Me surpreendi com a resposta positiva, pois como fui assíduo visitante de Ouro Preto e demais cidades do ciclo do ouro, sabia que era proibido fotografar e até mesmo filmar o interior das igrejas. A luz do flash das câmeras danifica o acabamento das pinturas e demais filigranas que compõem a decoração. Lendo a descrição sobre a história da igreja foi possível saber que uma parte dessa construção foi obra do Mestre Valentim.

AND´s Party - Lotada de Gente Bonita

Uma festa animada com gente bonita – assim foi a AND´s Party, que aconteceu no último dia 7. A noite teve início com MPB e Pop Nacional, seguinda de clipes do anos 80 e 90. Logo após, foi a vez de clipes atuais (Madonna, Shakira, Pussycat Dolls, etc…) De repente, as luzes se apagaram e a escuridão tomou conta da casa. Era mais uma edição do Black Out.
Ao som de Rihanna, as pessoas aproveitaram o escurinho…q se encerrou do Don´t Know Why…
e a pista bombou até as 5h.

"Deixa estar que o que for pra ser vigora"

Conheci Maria Gadú por uma entrevista na revista do “O Globo”. Já faz algum tempo, mas o nome diferente e as belas fotos da matéria me chamaram a atenção. Daí joguei o nome do Youtube, pra variar. Me encantei por “Bela Flor” e entendi o motivo de vários poderosos da MPB terem se declarado fãs da moça. Corri pra alguma loja pra comprar o CD. Na primeira tudo que ouvi foi “acabou”. Fui na segunda, dias depois: “Ixi, tá esgotado”. Na terceira, na semana seguinte: “Pô, eu nem sei quando vai chegar.

“Diacho”, pensei. “Essa garota deve ser boa demais. Só pode. Pra me fazer ter esse trabalho todo”. Até que um dia eu tava andando com o Du num shopping e entrei em uma livraria pra passar o tempo. Costumo me perder em livrarias e se não é ele me puxando pra sair, fico lá uma eternidade. Fui para a parte de música.

- Escuta, tem Maria Gadú aí?
- Pô, nem tem.
- Ah, tcho adivinhar: acabou?!
- Acabou mesmo. Deve chegar semana que vem.
- Beleza, já esperava.

Fui para o caixa com “Doidas e Santas”, de Martha Medeiros, nos braços. O Du me cutucou e apontou uma pilha de CDs no caixa. Ele começou a mexer e o penúltimo CD da pilha era de Gadú. “Caraca! Nem acredito!”. Aproveitei para comprar o novo da Céu também, mas confesso que não consegui parar para ouvir ainda.

Há algumas semanas, fui cobrir a gravação do DVD da Preta Gil (@PretaMaria) na The Week, no Rio. Maria Gadú estava por lá. Não costumo fazer isso, mas foi mais forte do que eu. Usei o crédito de jornalista (de fato, pretendo fazer matéria em breve com ela) para parar a moça na saída do banheiro e confessar meu vício por seu som. Troquei algumas palavras com ela e mais Marcinho (@marcio_nunes), outro viciado, e pronto. Vínculo estabelecido. Peguei contato de Gadú e fiquei ainda mais fã com sua simpatia.

Só faltava uma coisa. Um show ao vivo. Tentei ir em vários e sempre dava errado. Até que este sábado eu fui, e quase morri de tanto calor na Fundição Progresso, na Lapa. Gadú foi a primeira a entrar no palco. Diacho de menina, tem aquela voz fina, leve, e faz do microfone uma ponte para cantar feito sabiá. Maria parece que tem pulgas nos pés e pernas; ela cruza, descruza, tira a sandália, levanta, tropeça na sandália, chuta a garrafinha d’água.

Ela começou com “Encontro”, minha preferida. O Du tava comigo, pingando de calor igual, e também parecia hipnotizado. Chegou a vez de “Ne Me Quitte Pas”, a preferida do Du. Tenho de ser sincera: o ao vivo perde um pouco no vocal, sem a segunda voz safada que deixa a música um brinco no CD. Mas a “performance” de Gadú é envolvente. Ela levanta do banquinho e começa a soltar os famosos versos em francês. Faz do pedestal um corpo: o abraça, dobra, levanta, chuta.

E tudo bem que “Shimbalaiê” é a música da novela e talz. O bis poderia ser mais de Leandro Leo com “Laranja”. O “pequeno grande amigo” da moça é também um “enorme grande músico”. Me deixou boquiaberta! Saldo mais que positivo para Gaduzinha, que não é íntima minha, mas já faz parte do meu dia-a-dia. Viu, bela flor? Obrigada por seu som e poesia.

Aeroporto de Congonhas

Eu, Salbego e Adolfo saímos de casa às 6h30 rumo a Congonhas para pegar o voo das 7h40 (GOL – R$89) para o Rio de Janeiro. Era a primeira vez de todos nós na cidade maravilhosa e a ansiedade era grande. Nenhum dos três conseguiu dormir direito… O voo foi ótimo, em 35 minutos estávamos no aeroporto Santos Dumont, de onde pegamos um taxi (ridículos R$21 – como é barato taxi no RJ) para o Adventure Hostel em Ipanema (R$55 a diária em quarto compartilhado – nós pagamos R$70 pra ficar com o quarto quádruplo só pra nós).

O albergue pareceu simpático, mas como chegamos às 9h30 da manhã, não pudemos entrar

Ipanema

nos quartos, largamos nossas mochilas na recepção e fomos para a praia de Ipanema, a 3 quadras. Em pouco tempo já estávamos sentados num quiosque tomando chopp sob o sol escaldante. Eu e o Adolf fomos dar uma volta, passamos pelo Leblon e voltamos pra mais algumas cervejinhas. Caiu até uma chuvinha pra refrescar…

De volta ao hostel, nos ajeitamos e fomos almoçar no Sindicato do Chopp, sugerido pelo pessoal do albergue. Uma coisa é fato: comer no Rio de Janeiro não é das coisas mais baratas do mundo. Dividimos um churrasco misto e cada um pagou uns R$30. Mas o lugar é muito agradável e com ar condicionado.

Saindo dali, eu e Adolf fomos dar mais uma volta e resolvemos conhecer a Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, onde um fato que por pouco não virou uma tragédia aconteceu. Mas conto no post seguinte sobre o “tchbumm” que minha câmera nova resolveu dar…

Eu, Salbego e Adolf na Lapa

Mais à noite, resolvemos conhecer Santa Teresa, mas como começou a anoitecer, ficamos com um pouco de receio e fomos direto pra Lapa. Sinceramente, esperava mais do tão falado bairro boêmio carioca, mas foi divertido passar a noite no Bar do Garrafa (sem couvert – cerveja Original R$7). Chegamos cedo, umas 19h, e quando começou a ficar lotado, quase insuportável – lá pelas 23h30, fomos embora.

Pra fechar a noite, uma caminhada pelo calçadão de Ipanema e algumas cervejinhas… Boa noite Rio!!!
