There’s Robin, Wren and Dove. We’ve all heard about a boy called Falcon. Would this borrowing from the world of birds wear well on a daughter?

With a Happy Birthday to my sister, today’s Name of the Day is Lark.

There are dozens of larks – the white-winged, the short-toed, the roufus-rumped and even the spike-heeled. But that’s amongst the avian population. As a given name, Lark has only darted into the US Top 1000 once in the 1880s – for boys. I suspect the nineteenth century Lark sighting was related to Larkin, an old school diminutive and a surname derived from the then-popular Laurence and Lawrence.

Lark comes to us from the Germanic lerche – songbird. The verb lark – as in frolic – probably traces back to the Old Norse leika – to play. There’s more to the verb’s story, and you might argue that the irreverent undertones cancel out her nature name potential.

There’s a literary angle to this choice. In Romeo and Juliet, the ill-fated couple awakens the morning after their wedding night to birdsong. Juliet tries to convince her groom that he can stay a little longer: “It was the nightingale, and not the lark, that pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear.”

You’ll sometimes see lark listed as the opposite of night owl – another term for a morning person.

Parents today might think of actress Lark Voorhies. As Lisa on ear;u 90s teen comedy Saved by the Bell, she was a rich girl and aspiring fashion designer. The actress is still working, but her star has fallen since the original cast graduated.

Lark has been in use in the twentieth century – but mostly as a product name:

Copper brought nineteenth century miners to Utah. One of the communities they established was called Lark – but in the 1970s, the mines closed and today it is considered a ghost town;

Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Thurman Ruth was a member of The Larks, a vocal group from the early 1950s;

In the 1960s, Lark was a brand of cigarette – and still is in Japan;

Studebaker once built a Lark;

During the 1940s through the 60s, passengers could travel from San Fransisco to Los Angeles on the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Lark.

All of this doesn’t make much of a case for using Lark as a girl’s name. And yet, the US Top 1000 is littered with nature names, including:

Florals like Lily (#24), Daisy (#161) and Violet (#184);

Seasons Autumn (#89) and Summer (#171).

All of this has prompted parents to reconsider less familiar botanicals like Ivy, Iris and Willow. Lark shares the final -k sound with #52 Brooke – again, a relatively recent entry into use as a given name, but a widely accepted one.

If you’re seeking an unexpected nature name and prefer a frills-free choice for your daughter, Lark could fit the bill. Or if you love Lauren but don’t care for the nickname Laurie, Lark might be a nice alternative.

Did anyone miss me? or notice I was gone? :|
I am moved, have internet hooked up, and the house finally closed, so I can finally start looking at my humongous pile of stuff I need to blog. *sobs quietly*
What I decided to do was easy myself in slowly. ;p So I am doing a teeny little outfit and a skin that I think rocks. These things aren’t new anymore, so you probably have seen them on other blogs, but I hope I have put my own little twist on it.

(click for larger)

~The skin is the most recent group gift from Staged, called Judy in Frost. There is a 50L join fee for the group, but I think it is well worth it! The body on this skin is smokin’ hot, which is why I decided to show it with this very, very small outfit. ;p On previous Staged skins, I wasn’t really a huge fan of the nipples, but the ones on this skin I think are really nice! Very nice improvement, in my opinion. The belly is super sexy and look at the butt! It looks just adorable in these little christmas panties…
~which are a gift from {Torrify} ! You get 3 different colors and you also get the candy cane for your mouth! So cute!
~The adorable sweater is a gift from {Lark} at the Elliot location. I just adore this sweater, the textures are wonderful, and the bow and buttons are prim. I really think the buttons on this sweater are such a nice touch.

(click for larger)

~Here is a closeup of the Judy skin face. Really lovely…I am a huge fan of the lips and the nose.

(click for larger)

~The bracelet is the newest group gift from Earthstones. There is a 250L join fee for this group. This bracelet goes with a necklace and earring set that is still out as a VIP Group Gift. The newest gift also includes a ring.
~The shoes are not free, but they are quite fabulous. They are one of the newest releases from Kalnins and are color change in SO many different ways. Each part of the shoe can be colored separately. The HUD to change the shoe, nail and skin colors is quite user friendly.

I’ll add more later. My screenshot button for Maple doesn’t work so I have to Print Screen and copy it to paint to save my shots. It might not sound like it takes long, but it does for my computer.

I honestly think I did good with my CS clothes and hair. My hair is different, underrated, while I had subtle hints of various colors, notably the shirt. The black makes the blue from the crystal earrings and the scarf looking thing shine. Made the dark sexy with the shorts and the dark mysterious with the cape and hat. Hair is yellow to show more of a feminine side, and I notice yellow isn’t used much in Maple. With violet eyes illuminating a sparkle foreshadowing the colors by complementing the dark hat… Although I saw three people with the same hat as me, sigh. Anyways, the black and blue can represent for a winter wear, as the yellow and the shorts symbolize for summer. Perfect for a permanent wear.

ps- All this Cash Shop dressing makes me want to redo my IRL closet.

I should really keep up with this blogging malarkey. I keep finding lots of bits & bobs but keep forgetting to share all my inspiration and finds with you guys. I will update on a regular basis from now on though, promise….. I’m finding twitter to be a helpful tool for finding new designers and design studios. Follow me.

I seem to have gone back to my letterpress craze and the obsessive blog browsing is also kicking in, I could seriously browse blogs for days on end but it’s stopping me from doing any of my own work which is in desperate need as i’m feeling very useless without paper, printer ink, pens (they run out before the pen even touches the paper) and a lack of motivation to do my own work…. and also now I lack a letterpress which I am in dire need of or in my case just want, so if anyone wants to buy me one your very much welcome.

Adam Ramerth at Lark designed this unique set of letterpress wedding invitations which I must say go beyond the usual traditional bland choice of wedding stationary. Studio On Fire have also done an amazing job with the letterpress work. Niiiiiice!!

This week brings us two new items from Lark. The first is a stunning dress, reminiscent of later days. It is a brown dress with a lace overlay. This over lay covers most of the dress, sleeves and skirt, giving it a splash of class. The dress color shown is Brown Nuthatch.

The other dress is a wonderful tweed dress in grey. This complete outfit comes with the dress and the jewelry. All accessories that come with this dress compliment it even more. This dress can be worn for business or a night on the town.

I have been playing in the studio all week, or rather I should say, I was a bit frustrated in the studio this week. Every time I would start getting frustrated I would just start singing to the top of my lungs…I hope the neighbors could not hear me because they would be like what is wrong with that lady!! Believe me I can not carry a tune, oh well I don’t care, makes my heart soar anyway. So the reason for the frustration was the casting I was trying to teach myself to do, there is quite a bit of a learning curve that is for sure, but persistance pays off and if any of you know me, you know that when I am challenged with something new to do, I will eventually figure it out, it will not get the best of me. I must say that I am quite happy with the outcome. This opens the doors for my creativity and designs in a way that I have been dreaming about for a long time. Whooo HOOOOO… I love the whole creative process…from thought, design, and creation.

The jacket is from !Dada!, which was an Albero Autumn Fair exclusive, so it’s not available anymore. And this new released hair is from AY.line.
RAMfest IV, will take place on the weekend of 26- 28 February 2010, at Nekkies Holiday Resort, Worcester.

It’s time once again to journey headlong into the crazy-wonderful world of RAMfest. After what was certainly one of the most memorable events in Cape Town in 2009, 2010 is set to be the Year of the Spectacular. Audiomatik Events has secured a phenomenal line up, including Pendulum from Australia, Johnny Foreigner from the UK and top SA acts including Fokofpolisiekar, Taxi Violence, Jack Parow and The Dirty Skirts. RAMfest is also proud to present performances by much loved bands that have not performed in SA for a while: Boo!; Lark and The Narrow.

There has been a bit of a spruce up and spring clean and the furniture has been moved around a bit at Nekkies Holiday Resort, creating a smashing new site layout. When you get here, it should feel beautifully brand new and reassuringly familiar all at the same time.

Thanks to all of our dedicated followers, RAMfest is South Africa’s number 1 alternative music festival. RAMfest IV will surpass its predecessors, both in scale and in skandes.

The brainchild of Sassquatch (co-creator of the Sovereign Academy) every Dynamo is powered by a dedicated team of musicians, DJs, designers, animators, illustrators and stuff-makers and brought to life by the small army of robots that flood the dancefloor. With a heavy emphasis on elaborate decor, live lighting and video performance and fun dresscodes based around variations on the robot theme, Dynamo sets its sights on pushing the envelope on event design further than any other series of South African parties has done before.
Now Dynamo is taking the robot apocalypse on the road for a single night of mechanical mayhem at this year’s RAMfest. With the Redbull Van as a platform for constructing “ROBO-RAM!” RAMfest’s first dress up, get down and tear it apart robot after-party!

Tattoo’d this Christ on Bryan not long after putting the newest flash sheet up in the shop. A few small changes.

Possible rookie grim reaper unsure about an early kill on Matt Van Cura who does nice tattoos at Lark on Long Island.

Also: Josh appears in this funny news segment from the Onion with the Snow Falcon I did on his chest last winter.

Sienia Trevellion is the creator of Agent Orange (AO) has revamped her store, opened a new sim, and launched two new stores. Agent Orange goodies that you have come to know and love are spread all over the sim, like her the new stalker shrine, perfect for Halloween or just serious obsession. The old location on Desperation Kelly is now closed and has moved to the new main store on Annamaria Bushido (94, 67, 29). The new sim is not only worth exploring because there are so many cool things to see but sprinkled through out is a multitude of Freebies and Dollarbies. Let me show you a few…

First up, 4 Cozy Sweaters in sultry fall colors that are great on their own or layering for just 1L!

{Lark} Cozy Sweater (1L) - Bluebird, Brown Nuthatch, Grey Jay, Purple Martin- Click photo for full details

The {Lark} Grand Opening Gift, Bustier Dress in Cardinal, for 0L! Great for mixing and matching, use all or just parts.

{Lark} Bustier Dress in Cardinal (0L)

Industrious – Grand Opening Gift (0L) – a funky industrial candle stick made of found objects. This gift goes great with the grunge look or the urban industrial look.

Industrious - Grand Opening Gift (0L)

The Agent Orange – Grand Opening Gift for 0L is an Ingenious breakup letter and smashed picture frame that comes with an animation to have you sulk and cry over the departing words of your ex. This is a classic example of Sienia’s sense of humor and even if you won’t use it you should pick it up for a giggle and a photo op.

Agent Orange - Grand Opening Gift (0L)

On her Midnight Mania Board, she has the Well of the Water-Nix (those of you who did the Macabre Hunt will recognize this one).

Agent Orange Midnight Mania Well Of The Water-Nix

Now that you have seen the Freebies and Dollarbies, Let me show you just a taste of the gorgeous and clever things she has for sale … I bought the stalker shrine just so I could worship Sienia and her great designs, but you can get your own and stalk anyone you want.

Agent Orange - Stalker Shrine (150L)

Industrious is chalked full of found object furniture and this part of the store alone makes it worth stopping by the sim, even if you aren’t buying it is a great place to hang out and chat since there are so many comfortable chairs to sit in, like this Lincoln Seeds Chair.

Industrious - Lincoln Seeds Chair - Click photo for full details

Moving right along to the precious new {Lark} Striped & Plaid Dresses with removable pockets and accompany AO to wear that thrusts your hands in your pockets for 300L each. The single pack includes the removable pockets and AO so it is up to you if you like having the slouchy pockets or not, no addtional cost.

{Lark} Striped & Plaid Dress (300L) Using Pockets & Hands in Pockets AO - Click photo for full details

Now to wear this dress I had to make a few adjustments. One, I had to go with my smaller version of my avi (65) and a zero butt. I also changed the attachment point of the skirt from the chest to my stomach because I wanted to wear a necklace. This was super easy to do. Basic editing skills are, however, required to do this.

{Lark} Striped & Plaid Dress (300L) without Pockets - Click photo for full details

Most of Sienia’s dresses are 150L but she has so many options and features with this one it kind of explains the higher price on this. There is a lovely little black dress that is a wardrobe staple must.

I should mention that I am really loving the skin I have worn in all these pictures. It is a new one being brought out by Babyhoney Bailey at her store, Djinn & Tonic. Her RL makeup artist talents really show through in her makeup detail. The eyes are darkly lined and the lips are so lush it looks as you just finished licking them.

I can’t wait till she brings out the full line. This one was a blog review copy so I don’t know how much they will be as yet, but word is a fat pack of 16 is going to be a steal and will potentially include a freckle option and a hair base option. Whether those are all grouped in the fat packs of 16 all together remains to be seen. What we do know is that baby honey is going to give you the option to match up every eye makeup with every lip makeup. So no more of those “I love the eyes on this version of my skin, but I really wish it came with this lipstick…” moments.

I am looking for great things from these two talented creators. Maybe in the future we might even see some collaboration.

Base body used for all my pictures (save one) in this post:

Djinn & Tonic – Face1 – Lip Vamp (Coming Soon – Blog Preview Copy)

[SLB] Eyes – July’09 – Green B

>TRUTH< Gogo – night

Irresistible Look Eyelashes-Crissy Designs

Sienia’s pics have her own base and I cannot comment on what those parts are.

~This top and the ones shown below are all dollarbies at {Lark}. They have wonderful texturing, wrinkling and shading and the prim cuffs are a perfect touch. I love the low scoop back. There are a must have!
~This skin is a new group gift from Amacci. It comes only in this bronze tone. Someone was complaining on SCD SL Secret today about the lack of freebie skins in dark tones. Ha! Just to prove them wrong.
