My blog consists of the shit i think is dope. 80% music for the most. But now, i’m taking a break on music to pay homage to one of my favorite Film makers & Photographers: Larry Clark.

If i haven’t expressed through the blog posts, I love raw images. I love nasty quality videos, I love real shit. Any & everything that shows the natural beauty of something everyone wouldn’t normally consider beautiful or appealing. & that’s why i love Larry clarks work. It’s different but, that’s what it shows. Enjoy the upcoming posts. Peace

I’ve been ruminating for about a week on an Op-Ed piece by David Brooks that appeared in the N

I’ve been ruminating for about a week on an Op-Ed piece by David Brooks that appeared in the NY Times recently. In it, Brooks opines that relationships are becoming more transitory as a result of communication technology (notably texting).

The argument he makes goes something like this: the ability to communicate instantly (and for all practical purposes, concurrently) with a large number of people means that this new technology has brought a corresponding erosion of social barriers previously associated with courtship, which in turn has allowed young suitors to cast an ever widening net. Or to put it more simply, since you can talk to a lot more people a lot more easily then ever before you don’t have to commit to one prospective date over another.

He says that this is turning the process of courtship into an experience more akin to comparison shopping then tradition romance. The risk, he implies, is that we shall become less interested in the long process of wooing our very own Lady Dulcinea, then trading up as if our sexual partners are more like iPhones to be upgraded, freeing us to disregard the previous model without so much as a backward glance. This, one can infer, will result in ever more transitory relationships and a further washing away of long-term unions in our culture.

I must admit here that the word “courtship” seems anachronistic to my ear. Brooks uses it as if it is current, though acknowledges that his concept of it is probably 30 years out of date. I mentioned this feeling of foreignness with the word “courtship” to a few people who are much younger then me and they too seem to have a similar unfamiliarity with the concept. Perhaps, Brooks doesn’t recognize that young people don’t really “court” in the way they did in the past, (or at least on Happy Days). Even in my own budding sexual life there wasn’t a lot of “courting” going on (though in the interest of full disclosure, my early “sex life” was more earnest intent then actual conquest). We called it “hooking up” back in the bad old days of the early 90s, and it was as transitory then as I imagine it is now.

This line of thinking brought me to mind a film by Larry Clark called, Kids. It came out right as I got out of college and was probably best known for featuring a very young Chloë Sevigny. So young in fact, that she had yet to add dots above her name and is simply credited as “Chloe”. It also features a very young Rosaria Dawson, which I had completely forgotten about until looking at the movie poster. The film centers around a group of middle class kids in lower Manhattan. There is a plot, but as the film is a docu-drama, the guts of the pic are in the characters and their interactions. I remember that there was a lot of controversy following the film as many of the characters, despite being as young as 13, were hardly the picture of innocence. These were kids from “good homes” who were stealing, drinking, fighting, screwing and doing drugs (even on school days). What struck me at the time was how authentic the film felt.

I grew up just over the river in New Jersey, and knew the places in the film very well. I also felt like I knew the characters. These were kids I knew, went to school with. At the time, I was still young (and foolish) enough to angrily resent the “concerned parents” that were fretting over this movie. To me, they were playing ostrich and just didn’t have the courage to recognize that their own progeny were very likely engaged in (at least some) of the mayhem being portrayed on screen. After all, many of the “actors” were actually just kids Clark plucked off the street. And didn’t these parents also seek out a bit of mischief and a quick one behind the shed before they had a mortgage and worried about which fertilizer works best on a partial shade lawn?

Why this makes me think about Brooks’ piece is that I feel the same sense that the conduit is being blamed for the content. I’m as unsure that something as superficial as communications technology can really bend the nature of human behavior, as I was certain that the peers I knew growing up were behaving in exactly the same way before and after the release of Kids, (though now I’m sure many could give good fertilizer advice). While one can say that tweets and texts may enable a bit more ’shopping’, does it really effect a person’s promiscuity? Do the subjects of Brook’s article actually do more now then they would have 5 or 10 years ago, or even 30-40 years ago in the ‘Happy Days’ era? The older I get and the more books that I read, both fiction and non-, the more convinced I am that we, as a species, don’t really change all that much.

This question of the Nature of Man (and how it relates to hook-ups) is really only part rhetorical and part genuinely interrogative – I’d really would like to know what people think. Is Brooks just viewing the singles scene through some (long) misty lens? My inclination is to think this is indeed the case, but I am also aware that, just as not everyone born in the mid-70s had an upbringing like my own, that perhaps I too am projecting my own perspective on top of the truth. In addition I’ve been out of the dating scene for almost 15 years.

So the questions are:

Did you/do you court?

Do you have kids who are of “courting” age?

Do you think anything in the process has changed beyond the mechanics?

Speaking to a friend last night, he recommended a song by the band Slint. This track is off the soundtrack to the controversial 1995 Larry Clark film Kids (see wiki if you don’t know about it). The movie’s soundtrack was put together by Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr fame which also included tracks by Daniel Johnston and The Beastie Boys.

Slint were a post-rock band from the early ’90’s. This 7 minute track Good Morning Captain (from the band’s second release, 1991’s Spiderland) was once compared by the Guardian to Led Zeppelin’s Stairway To Heaven saying “the extraordinary Good Morning Captain is [Slint's] Stairway to Heaven, if it’s possible to imagine Stairway to Heaven bleached of all bombast.” If your a fan of Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Mogwai, this is for you, as the album has been created by these band’s and other in the genre as an influence on their sound.

Larry Clark can be hit and miss, for every Kids or Ken Park you can get Another Day in Paradise. Yet

Larry Clark can be hit and miss, for every Kids or Ken Park you can get Another Day in Paradise. Yet over the years one thing has become increasingly clear. Despite his penchant for pervy shots of pre pubescent boys with their shirts off, he offers a gritty shocking kind of reality that is totally alien to Hollywood. Wassup Rockers (Accent) is a departure for Clark. There’s no drugs or explicit voyeuristic teen sex here, yet there is the kind of desperate street realism for which he has made his name. It follows a group of hispanic skaters from south central, longhaired punkers in tight jeans who fly in the face of the baggy gangster rap norm. In the directors commentary Clark speaks of finding the crew at an LA skate park then taking them to various other skate parks every saturday for the next year. Whilst there’s something concerning about a 66 year old hanging with 14 year old boys every weekend, the first half of the film, coming from their own tales possesses a realism that could never be achieved without some degree of mutual trust. These kids are playing themselves. Unfortunately the second half, where Clark takes some artistic license and re-imagines them as The Warriors meeting Paris Hilton all becomes a little too slapstick, too kitsch, feeling forced, overly cinematic and very very dubious. Yet we’re under no illusions with Clark. Even his flawed films are morally questionable enough to make them essential.

Blacklisted by Hollywood and outed as a member of the communist party, Jules Dassin subsequently relocated to Europe where he would go on to create Rififi, one of the greatest heist films ever. Yet in 1947 he was still in the US working with Burt Lancaster on the prison drama Brute Force (Directors Suite) which offers old chestnuts like stool pigeons, unbreakable but moral prisoners (Lancaster) and a sadistic warden who drives the good and noble prisoners to a suicidal escape attempt. Unfortunately though due to Oz what may have been shocking at the time now feels a little dated. Naked City (Directors Suite) is a thorough yet gripping 1948 police procedural drama. Step by step it demonstrates how to solve a crime, in the way Law and Order and CSI have since replicated. It was also one of the early films actually filmed in the streets of New York, mingling actors and real people, often filmed in a van behind a two way mirror. Night and City (Directors Suite) is one of Dassin’s great films, not in the least due to the casting of dapper sleaze-bag Richard Widmark. Filmed on the streets of 1950 London it’s a hard boiled tale of a fast talking shyster who’s shot at the big time could also be his undoing. This is what noir is all about, the spiral out of control. “Harry is an artist without art,” offers a corrupt club owner about Widmark’s slimy character and the images of Widmark frantically fleeing a London dawn will stay with you forever.

You can file Breakin (Shock) under ‘lame fad dance films,’ alongside your Dirty Dancing’s, your Lambada’s (it was forbidden for a reason), and your Fame’s. Its appeal now is that it’s dripping with kitsch youth culture cliches and features an early appearance from a groovy Jean Claude Van Damme and Ice-T. Then there’s the immortal Turbo dancing to Kraftwerk’s Tour de France which rates alongside the opening to a Touch of Evil as one of the greatest scenes cinema has to offer. Some films are meant to be forgotten, this is too much fun to allow that to happen.

Afro Samurai (Madman) was cool in a dumb hyper violent rivers of blood, spaghetti western meets insane Japanese manga kind’ve way. The melding of Eastern folklore and hip urban Afro American culture was as equally opportunistic as it was inspired. Its sequel Afro Samurai Resurrection (Madman) reeks of cash in, with Samuel L Jackson returning as the voice of Samurai, Lucy Lui and Mark Hamil as the bad guys and of course RZA (Wu Tang Clan) providing the ultra cool score. It’s easy to be seduced by style, bask in the geysers of blood and hip hop beats, yet, well there is no yet, the blood and violence is super cool, sexy as hell and a lot of fun to bask in.

CLICK FOR TRAILER

What?

An amoral, HIV-positive skateboarder sets out to deflower as many virgins as possible while a local girl who contracted his disease tries to save his next target from her same fate.

Where?

At home.

With?

The dog.

Why?

I remember seeing a really bad pirated VHS of this whilst I was at school, I remember it got past around the playground like wildfire, but for some reason, the film just didn’t click with me. It was full of arseholes who treat eachother like shit and reminded me of a few people at said school who pretty much idolised Telly and Casper. I figured, ten years on I’ll give it another go and see if I missed anything and how it differs through now adult eyes.

Worth It?

I hated watching this film, my initial character assessment hasn’t changed, it’s full of deplorable dickheads who are played with little to no conviction from a bare bones script with no aim or point. It’s also directed by Larry ‘I don’t make films that don’t contain children having sex” Clark, so I really should have known what to expect.

Yet, I couldn’t turn it off or look away. I wanted to see how it ended…it made me pretty angry. But a credit to Clark, he kept me intrigued…

In my research of Marina, I have uncovered these interesting and titallating videos, and now I am sharing it for your enjoyment:

This first video features Marina interacting with a writer from The Guardian during a show that Marina curated that involves 12 young and upcoming performance artists in New York. The reason why I was so excited about this clip was to see new performance work actively being done today, good and bad: http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/video/2009/jul/06/marina-abramovic-manchester-festival-adrian-searle

Balkan Erotic Epic

This video is a short film that Marina directed as part of a collection of short films called Destriction. Other directors include Matthew Barney (Cremaster and Drawing Restraint), Larry Clark (Kids), Marco Brambilla, Gaspar Noe (Irreversible), Richard Prince and Sam Taylor-Wood. This collections of films explores the connection between art and sex. I haven’t watched all the shorts in Destriction, but Marina’s piece “Balkan Erotic Epic” is strange and humorous, and I really enjoy it: http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/balkan+erotic+epic/video/xk7m0_balkaneroticepicmarinaabramovic_creation

God Punishing

And finally, I just recently watched a movie titled Our City Dreams. The movie documents 5 women artists who live and work in New York City, one of whom is Marina. The other women in the documentary are Swoon, Nancy Spero, Kiki Smith, and Ghada Amer. The movie is incredibly interesting, especially (to me) the section on Marina. If you’re looking to learn more about art, especially women artists, definitely check it out. I give the movie a 8/10. Here’s the trailer:

Clearly, I am becoming more and more obsessed with Marina. And this obsession isn’t stopping any time soon, I don’t think.

I slept really well this morning. I guess I slept pretty well last night, too, though I did wake up

I slept really well this morning. I guess I slept pretty well last night, too, though I did wake up at 5:30 with the feeling that something was wrong.

And I was right! The vision in my right eye was all blurry, which is no surprise as I have horrible eyesight and being asleep I wasn’t wearing my contacts, but everything looked like it was in night vision. I was scared as I looked around my apartment, blinking my eye to make it go away. It did, sorta, and I could see normally this morning when I finally dragged myself out of bed.

I didn’t make the mistake of watching anything terrible last night before I went to sleep. Unlike Sunday night, when I made the mistake of watching Bully for a bit before turning in. Does anything good ever happen in a Larry Clark movie? I’ve only seen Bully and Kids but based on those two I’m guessing no.

So after watching most of Bully, I knew I couldn’t go right to bed. My dreams would doubtless be full of drug-addicted murderous teenagers smoking endless joints and taking endless drives through suburban Florida. It wasn’t as bad as the time I stayed up until 3:00 am watching The Ring by myself but it was close. I had to find something else to watch. Thank goodness for this video from Toby Jones of Jones’ Big Ass Truck Rental and Storage fame:

Oh but I forgot to say: I now own jasmined.com. I’m very excited but I have no idea what to do with this domain. Right now it’s pointing to jasmined.tumblr.com. I think it would be hilarious to create a mid-90’s looking web page much like the one I had in college. It’s been so long since I’ve seen the <blink> tag on the internet.

LES meets UES in matrimony; image courtesy of gossipgirlinsider.com

So, I finally saw last week’s episode of Gossip Girl. For my money, there is nothing surprising about Sonic Youth performing “Starpower” and bassist/guitarist Kim Gordon marrying Rufus Humphrey and Lily van der Woodsen-Bass-etc. The reason, as I will outline chronologically below, is that flirtations with mainstream popular culture is completely in keeping with their career. This cameo isn’t an isolated incident. If anything this network-savvy band pioneered how indie does synergy.

March 1, 1988: Ciccone Youth, a side project formed in 1986 between the band and Minutemen bassist/co-founder Mike Watt releases The Whitey Album. In this configuration, they took part of their name from Madonna’s surname. They also covered some of her songs, including “Into the Groovey” and “Burnin’ Up.” For good measure, they also covered Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.” Were they taking the piss or celebrating 80s blockbuster pop? Maybe both? You decide.

June 26, 1990: Goo is released on DGC, marking their major label debut.

In 1991, the Goo video album is released, a clip accompanying each song on the album. Among them are “Mildred Pierce” which features Sofia Coppola dressed as Joan Crawford, who starred in the 1945 film noir of same name, “Disappearer,” which was directed by Todd Haynes, and a few clips directed by Tamra Davis, including “Dirty Boots” and “Kool Thing,” which also featured Public Enemy’s Chuck D.

September 17, 1991: Kim Gordon co-produces Pretty on the Inside, Hole’s debut album, released on Caroline, a subsidiary of Virgin.

July 21, 1992: Dirty is released. Two noteworthy music videos come along with it. Actor Jason Lee, then unknown, is featured as a tragic skateboarder in ”100%. The clip was co-directed by Davis and Spike Jonze, who just made some movie about kids and monsters based on a children’s book. Chloë Sevigny, once a Sassy intern, stars in “Sugar Kane,” which also showcases Marc Jacobs’ Perry Ellis grunge collection.

August 9, 1993: “Cannonball” is released as the lead single to The Breeders way-ruling Last Splash. Kim Gordon co-directs the music video with Jonze.

September 14, 1993: Judgment Night is released, along with a successful soundtrack from Epic that pairs alternative/metal acts with rap groups. Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill collaborate on ”I Love You Mary Jane.”

Cover to Judgment Night (Epic, 1993); image courtesy of brianorndorf.com

1994: Kim Gordon creates X-Girl with Daisy von Furth, a sister clothing line to Beastie Boys Mike D’s X-Large collection. I see DJ Tanner wear an X-Girl blue jumper on Full House and want one.

August 25, 1994: Sonic Youth contributes “Genetic” to the My So-Called Life soundtrack. Released on Atlantic, the compilation features other Juliana Hatfield, Afghan Whigs, Daniel Johnston, and (of course) Buffalo Tom, who every fan remembers played a show on Pike Street.

September 13, 1994: If I Were A Carpenter, a Carpenters tribute album, is released on A&M. An alternafest, acts like American Music Club, Shonen Knife, Babes and Toyland, and Matthew Sweet share time with SY, who cover “Superstar.” In late 2007, the song would make an appearance in the movie Juno.

October 27, 1995: CBS airs “The State’s 43rd Annual All-Star Halloween Special,” marking the MTV sketch comedy troupe’s network television debut. Sonic Youth is the musical guest. Few people watch (I am one of them), and CBS decides to pull the plug.

May 19, 1996: Fox airs ”Homerpalooza,” The Simpsons‘ penultimate episode of its seventh season. In it, Homer goes on tour with Hullabalooza (re: Lollapalooza), taking canons to the gut to the bemusement of thousands of jaded slackers. Several acts made guests appearances, including Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, Peter Frampton, and Sonic Youth. The band also provides an “alternative” version to Danny Elfman’s iconic theme song, perhaps getting closer in tone to what creator Matt Groening had originally envisioned when suggesting that avant-jazz composer John Zorn write the show’s theme song. The song is later featured on Rhino’s Go Simpsonic With The Simpsons: Original Music From The Television Series compilation.

June 5, 1996: James Mangold’s debut feature, Heavy, is released in the states. Moore composes the score.

June 1998: I watch the “Kool Thing” video at a Gadzooks in the Mall of America during a trip to Young Life camp in Minnesota.

July 13, 2001: Larry Clark’s Bully is released in theaters. Moore composes the score.

July 25, 2005: Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, the director’s take on Kurt Cobain’s final days, is released in the states. Gordon appears as a record executive based on Danny Goldberg trying to turn the main character’s life around. Moore also served as a music consultant.

May 2006: Former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold joins the band. This has nothing to do with matters of synergy or cross-promotion; I just happen to think he’s kinda cute. He was also featured in a comic strip, but the name escapes me. His catchphrase is something to the effect of “I’m Mark, the bassist from Pavement” but I’m butchering it. My friend Susan told me about it, so maybe she’ll share in the comments section.

Mark Ibold, perhaps around the time he was dating Oksana Baiul and before the Pavement reunion tour; image courtesy of amazon.com

May 9, 2006: Moore and Gordon appear with daughter Coco in “Partings,” the Gilmore Girls‘ season six finale.

June 15, 2007: Pitchfork reports that SY will be contributing a track to a Starbucks compilation.

November 21, 2007: Todd Haynes’s I’m Not There is released. Gordon’s makes a cameo as folkie Carla Hendricks, who is based on Judy Collins. The casting furthers my suspicion that SY friend Todd Haynes must have been influenced by the band’s fandom of The Carpenters and preoccupation with Karen Carpenter’s tragic struggle with anorexia. They cover “Superstar.” He makes a biopic about Carpenter called Superstar. Coincidence?

September 8, 2008: Choosing not to renew their contract with Geffen, SY sign with indie stalwart Matador.

November 3, 2008: Moore and former Be Your Own Pet frontwoman Jemina Pearl cover The Ramones’ “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker” specifically for “There Might Be Blood,” a season two episode of Gossip Girl.

February 16, 2009: Gordon debuts a clothing collection called Mirror/Dash for Urban Outfitters.

Is this bad? Hmm, maybe. I suppose it depends on your outlook. I’d say it’s no worse than The Flaming Lips performing on Beverly Hills, 90210 (although, maybe for it to be equal, Wayne Coyne would have to play a short-order cook at the Peach Pit). Beyond paying the bills and circulating their brand, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a fair amount of post-modern, art-school, post-Warholian why-the-hell-not? factoring into all of Sonic Youth’s above-ground forays. Or perhaps they (gasp!) like many of these texts and ventures.

Perhaps the band knows that dabbling with the mainstream is tricky business. Maybe this explains why Moore (and, to a lesser extent Gordon and guitarist Lee Ranaldo, though not media-shy drummer Steve Shelley) cultivated an authoritative presence in recent music documentaries like Punk: Attitude, Kill Yr Idols, and I Need That Record! It may also have fueled a need for an outlet through which to channel more experimental projects, resulting in the band forming Sonic Youth Recordings in 1996, along with Shelley’s Smells Like label and Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label. In addition, Ranaldo has done a considerable amount of writing, creates installation projects with his wife Leah Singer, has an extensive solo career, and has performed improvisatory film scores as a member of Text of Light.

And, you know. The band is still really good. Even as folks mine their discography or weave them into above-ground mainstream corporate media culture enterprising, they’re still challenging themselves and making great music. Earlier this year, the band released The Eternal, their 16th album. Peaking at #18 on the Billboard charts, it also boasts a consistently great set of songs and a painting by late guitarist John Fahey for its cover. This blurring of art and commerce, for good or for bad, is in keeping with the band and their contributions to music culture.

Poster do filme

When: September 19, 2009

Where: Museum Of Photographic Arts (MOPA), Balboa Park, San Diego

Exhibitions: Picturing the Process: The Photograph as Witness, Ansel Adams: A Life’s Work, Jo Whaley: Theater of Insects

Ansel Adams: A Life’s Work

The first thing that captured my eye during my visit to MOPA was the big wall with some of the information about the photographer for one of the main exhibitions: Ansel Adams. “A Life’s Work” features an overview of Adam’s work from his early years in Sierra Nevada and Yosemite Valley, to his work in the Japanese Internment Camp at Manzanar, as well as his well-known masterpieces.”

If I remember correctly, he was fourteen when his passion for photography started while a family vacation and from there he was unstoppable. His images are of nature. His style is mostly black and white; there is a lot of contrast in his photographs. There was one picture that was printed twice: one showing the style of those photographers he admired which one can see a little bit more of detail and the other which shows his own style with high contrast, rich blacks (I like this one best). One thing that impressed me was that most of his prints are gelatin silver based, probably because I have never heard of this before and the word silver sounds fancy. I am not educated in photography and the knowledge of how things are done always impress me at first.

I will pause my exhibition account for a moment and explain a little bit what gelatin silver print is. After looking up several definitions on the web I found one that was clear to me from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London online (complete explanation of photographic processes and examples here: http://www.vam.ac.uk/vastatic/microsites/photography/processes.php) According to V&A “gelatin silver prints are the most usual means of making black and white prints from negatives. They are papers coated with a layer of gelatin, which contains light sensitive silver salts. They were developed in the 1870’s and by 1895 had generally replaced albumen prints because they were more stable, did not turn yellow and were simpler to produce. Gelatin silver prints remain the standard black and white print type.” I guess it is a fancy way for museums to say black and white.

Coming back to Ansel Adams pictures, it makes sense to me why he would chose gelatin silver prints over other processes available. His images were black and white and he probably wouldn’t want them to turn yellow otherwise they would lose the high contrast effect he worked for while developing them. An example of an image that he worked over and over is “Moonrise, Hernandez”; the smaller of the prints 16×20 for that photograph are valued at $50,0000. This is an image to see, there is something (hard for me to explain) that makes it special. When one visits the museum there is an introduction that it explains that it was around this time that he started using the “rule of thirds.” He does it in this one by giving us three different things to look at: the black sky, the white moon and clouds, and the grey village at the bottom. Also there is an interesting story behind this picture, one of chance, because he did not actually set up to take it but when he saw the view while driving through he decided to stop and take the picture.

Jo Whaley: Theater of Insects

Jo Whaley, Idea leuconoe, 2003

Jo Whaley gives us a totally different way to look at nature by capturing the beautiful colors of insects and putting them against created backgrounds, hence the name of the exhibition, a combination that awakes ones imagination to create stories with the image. Dead insects look so alive in her work. At first I thought of her work as collages but after researching more about her I learned not although I can definitely think of the photograph as the glue.

Jo Whaley - Making the stage for a butterfly

Basically what she does is create a stage for the insect, then places it carefully where and how she wants it to “pose” and after that she takes a picture with her camera and the results are beautiful, I remember saying to myself, “how can a horrible beetle look so beautiful here”.

Jo Whaley, Coleoptera, 2003,

Picturing the Process: The Photograph as Witness

Finally there is a small section dedicated for educational purposes that I enjoyed very much because it shows many ways of doing documentary photography: war, people, family, places, or events in general. The reason I enjoyed this section was because it educated me on the different ways that one can take documentary photographs also the work of Sally Mann and James Nachtway was featured and I was a bit more familiarized with them because of what we learned last semester. Besides the photographs featured of them there were some others that I caught my attention not only because of the photograph itself but also by the questions the introduction for the pictures posed. The first one was “Highway Camp, Encinitas, California” by Don Bartletti (gelatin silver print), the introduction mentioned that some photographers show us events or places one will never see or think existed and it does not need to be on the other side of the world to occur. Even though the picture is from 1989 I cannot imagine this type of situation has ended, it is sad and so close to home. I lived in Encinitas for many years and have used the I-5 many, many times.

Don Bartletti - Highway Camp, Encinitas CA 1989

As I was moving along the photographs I start reading the introduction for another section while looking at the pictures surrounding it, I notice the picture of a pregnant woman sitting in a chair with her body towards the window lighting her nude belly. The introduction asks one to look closer at the picture and its composition and lighting, to look at the subject and see how the mood of the image contrasts with what is being depicted. So after reading the introduction I really paid attention to the picture and noticed she is doing drugs, after that I walked away and was disgusted by it. How could she? Is the photographer supposed to say that what she is doing is wrong? Precisely this is the feeling the photographer wants to evoke. Should photographers win prizes because they took these type of pictures? I think many pictures say a lot about the person behind them. I do not agree with this one though.

There is a video I saw recently that pictures this dilemma called “One Hundredth of a Second” you can view it below:

Finally the last series of pictures that caught my attention were the photographs of the Brown Sisters, from Nicholas Nixon who is husband to one of them. With one of the pictures there is a book below showing the sisters photographed over 35 years all standing exactly in the same position for all the pictures. We can see them age, the different styles of clothing they wore, and how the facial expressions were not the same for every picture. The introduction poses the question as to how the pictures of the sisters are different from a typical family portrait. I think that it makes it different from a family portrait in that the sisters are not dressed-up as one would be for a family portrait, also they were willing to do it each year, and the lighting is not always consistent, most of it is natural lighting.

Nicholas Nixon - Brown Sisters
