As a little girl, Karen Larson gave herself two choices: become a famous artist or become a famous singer.

A few decades and three kids later, Larson is working on the latter.

The Richmond singer-songwriter released her first album in April, plays various spots around town and is already working on a second collection of songs.

Born in Victoria as “a navy brat,” Larson spent half her childhood in the Maritimes, half on Vancouver Island.

Her life changed in 1987 at a U2 concert at B.C. Place. Lead singer Bono had his fans on edge, including Larson, who said his passion and ability to reach people packed into the stadium made her realize this is what she was meant to do.

The thought never left her mind, and 11 years ago, a Julie Blue performance-songwriting workshop gave Larson her start. She taught herself to play guitar and began performing.

She had a three-year-old at the time and two more kids followed. They might have slowed her down then, but they’re now inspiring her to reach for the stars.

Her first independent production, Fire and Ice, came out in April, a mix of rootsy country-tinged pop and jazzy, honest blues.

Larson’s next local performance is Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, 7551 Westminster Hwy. during the Richmond Society for Community Living fundraising evening, which goes from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets, $50, available at 604-279-7040 and include hors d’oeuvres, auctions and prizes. What was it about that U2 concert that got you hooked?

“It was the band. I loved them anyway, but to actually see Bono live, he was so inspirational. I think there was 55,000 people at that concert. I’ve been to concerts at B.C. Place where people are fighting on the way out, and there’s trouble. This concert, all these people were filing out calmly at the end of the show singing one of their very mellow songs. It was incredible. I thought, ‘This is what I want to do.’”

What do you think of the evolution of that band?

“I like that they’re kind of going back to their rock roots again. They did lose me after the Rattle and Hum album…but I still admire Bono for being out there and his honesty.”

Is there anyone in your life that gave you your musical sense?

“I think it was my mom’s side of the family—all those Maritime people. They’re very open, passionate people. One of my uncles, when I was five, six years old he played guitar and he’d let me sing with him when we were in Prince Edward Island. My parents too, music was huge for them—they were always playing music.”

What inspired you to write the songs on Fire and Ice?

“This particular collection was written over a 10-year period. It was different relationships I’d been in. I was a single mom for awhile—that was a tough time—and then meeting my new partner who plays piano for me and co-produced the album. It was a collection of things that I had to get myself through over 10 years. We’re working on a second album now, and my songs are maybe not as heavy. They still have an honest feel about them. It’s still all about personal experiences, but I’m just trying different things now. I’m throwing in roots rock.”

Where do you hope music will take you?

“I hope music will take me to a sustainable living, because I know it’s just what I need to do, it’s so hard to do anything else. And most of all, I want to do what Bono did that time: I want to reach people. I’ve had people e-mail me and tell me how a song of mine was life-changing for them. They connected to it, to hear that somebody else was feeling what they were—they weren’t alone. That’s a good feeling.”

For example, 8. a4 g5 9. h3 Bh5 10. Qe2! Kb8 11. g4! Bg6 12. Nc4! and white has an edge. Delaying h2-h3 looks foxier. It also probably has the advantage of taking black out of the well-known channels.

ΣΤΙΓΚ ΛΑΡΣΟΝ - Το κορίτσι με το τατουάζ

Ενώ παράγγελνα διάφορα βιβλία από το άμαζον, μου έβγαζε συνέχεια μια πρόταση για ένα βιβλίο που πιθανόν να μου άρεσε. The girl with the dragon tattoo. Το αγνόησα μερικές φορές αλλά μια μέρα που έψαχνα ένα αστυνομικό για τον πατέρα μου, λέω ας το δω κι αυτό. Και αυτό ήταν…. Κόλλησα. Κατ’αρχήν η μυθολογία: Ο συγγραφέας ένας Σουηδός δημοσιογράφος γράφει αυτά τα τρία βιβλία που συνολικά λέγονται Millenium, με τα πολλά βρίσκει εκδότη και λίγους μήνες μετά πεθαίνει. Η συνομωσιολογία αρχίζει και ο αστικός μύθος ότι δεν πέθανε από καρδιακή προσβολή αλλά τον πεθάνανε λόγω αυτών που έγραφε, καλά κρατεί! Γίνεται δηλαδή και ο συγγραφέας κομμάτι της ιστορίας του!

Αγόρασα το Κορίτσι με το Τατουάζ στα ελληνικά, για να το χαρίσω στο μπαμπά μου. Τo διάβασα μέσα σε 2-3 μέρες και είναι από αυτά τα βιβλία που εκνευρίζεσαι όταν σου διάκοπτουν το διάβασμα. Είναι ένα πολύ καλογραμμένο θρίλλερ, διαδραματίζεται στη Σουηδία, μιλάει για πολλά θέματα, και έχει πολύ ενδιαφέροντες ήρωες!

Ο Μίκαελ Μπλομκβιστ (μην αποθαρρύνεστε από τα δυσπρόφερτα ονόματα παρακαλώ) είναι ένας δημοσιογράφος σε ένα αριστερό περιοδικό με ρεπορτάζ. Είναι ένας δημοσιογράφος ερευνητής που όμως τον πετυχαίνουμε σε μια δύσκολη στιγμή της καριέρας του: μια σημαντική ιστορία στράβωσε, τα στοιχεία του δεν αποδείχτηκαν και ο δημοσιογράφος καταδικάζεται σε τρεις μήνες φυλάκιση (συν τα έξοδα της δίκης). Οι φίλοι του και συνάδελφοι του τον παρακαλούν να ασκήσει έφεση αλλά αυτός αρνείται, ξέρει ότι τα έχει θαλασσώσει, όχι γιατί ο άνθρωπος που κατήγγειλε είναι κανένα καλό παιδί, αλλά γιατί δεν χειρίστηκε την υπόθεση σωστά.

Αυτός είναι ο ένας ήρωας. Η άλλη ηρωίδα τώρα είναι μια από τις πιο ενδιαφέρουσες ηρωίδες που έχω διαβάσει ποτέ. Νεαρή, μικροκαμωμένη, ντυμένη στα μαύρα, με ατέλειωτα πιρσιν σε όλο της το σώμα, λιγομίλητη, με απίθανες ικανότητες στην έρευνα, δεινή χάκερ, αμφιφυλόφιλη, παράξενη, οι περισσότεροι νομίζουν ότι έχει νοητική στέρηση αλλά είναι μόνο μία κάλυψη για την ευφυΐα της.

Χάρη στην επινοητικότητα του συγγραφέα αυτοί οι δύο εντελώς διαφορετικοί άνθρωποι έρχονται κοντά ο ένας στον άλλο και αρχίζουν να δουλεύουν μαζί. Κι έτσι αρχίζει να αποκαλύπτεται μια τρομακτική ιστορία βίας, ένας δαιμόνιος σίριαλ κίλερ, μια οικογένεια διαλυμένη από τα μυστικά της και την υποκρισία της. Η ιστορία είναι ένας καμβάς και ο Λάρσον αναλύει πολλές εκφάνσεις της ζωής στη χώρα του αλλά και παγκοσμίως. Ο αρχικός τίτλος του βιβλίου είναι «ο άντρας που μισούσε τις γυναίκες» και είναι νομίζω ενδεικτικός για το πώς βλέπει τους κατά συρροή βιαστές και δολοφόνους.

Ο φίλος μου ο Κώστας, ειδικός επί των αστυνομικών, διάβασε μερικές κριτικές στο άμαζον και αποφάσισε να μην το διακινδυνεύσει. Εγώ πάλι, έχω άλλη γνώμη. Μου άρεσε πολύ, το ρούφηξα, δεν μπορούσα να το αφήσω, ενώ διάβαζα τον πρώτο τόμο παρήγγειλα και το δεύτερο στα αγγλικά γιατί εκεινη τη στιγμή δεν είχε κυκλοφορήσει ακόμη στα ελληνικά (τώρα, έτοιμο). Περιμένω πως και πως και το τρίτο μέρος, τώρα τέλη Σεπτεμβρίου. Μου άρεσε για τη γενικότερη κριτική του, για την περιγραφή της σουηδικής κοινωνίας, για τους ήρωες που όλοι ακόμη και οι δευτερεύοντες είναι καθαρά σχεδιασμένοι και ενδιαφέροντες. Μου άρεσε γιατί μιλούσε για πολιτική, γιατί ανέλυε το θέμα της οικονομικής διαφθοράς με απλά λόγια και γιατί οι ήρωες δεν είναι ούτε καλοί, ούτε κακοί, μα κάτι ανάμεσα, με τις δικές τους προσωπικές ηθικές αρχές ο καθένας που δεν έχουν καμία σχέση με θρησκεία. Η Μικέλλα Χαρτουλάρη έγραψε την περασμένη βδομάδα ένα άρθρο για την επέλαση των Σκανδιναβών συγγραφέων στο εκδοτικό τοπίο και συμφωνώ απολύτως μαζί της:

«Γιατί όμως, γοητεύουν τα θρίλερ των Βίκινγκς; Άραγε επειδή το είδος κορέσθηκε από Αγγλοσάξονες; Επειδή η ΙΚΕΑ έχει σημαδέψει τη σύγχρονη κουλτούρα; Επειδή έγιναν μόδα, όπως είχε γίνει ο αποκρυφισμός με τον Νταν Μπράουν; Ή μήπως επειδή ένας αέρας ακτιβισμού πνέει στα πανιά τους; Είναι μάλλον νωρίς για να απαντήσουμε, μπορούμε ωστόσο να παρατηρήσουμε τα εξής: Αυτά τα μυθιστορήματα δεν «πουλάνε» ούτε εξωτισμό ούτε κοσμοπολιτισμό ούτε νοσταλγία ούτε απομυθοποίηση. Διασχίζουν τα σύνορα της γλώσσας τους, καταργούν τα όρια των λογοτεχνικών ειδών, αψηφούν τους κανόνες και συλλαμβάνουν την Ευρώπη του 21ου αιώνα από δρόμους εναλλακτικούς, χωρίς δέος, χωρίς σοβαροφάνεια, χωρίς κλισέ, χωρίς πολιτικές ή ιστορικές αγκυλώσεις αλλά με χιούμορ μαύρο και με τόλμη. Μιλάνε ανοιχτά για τα κυκλώματα του βρώμικου χρήματος, για το εμπόριο όπλων, ναρκωτικών και λευκής σαρκός, για λαθρομετανάστες και ρατσιστικά εγκλήματα, για οικολογικά εγκλήματα, για παιδική πορνεία και παιδοφιλικά κυκλώματα, για οικονομικά και πολιτικά συμφέροντα και ανίερες συμμαχίες, για συνωμοσίες σιωπής και απωθημένα μυστικά. Χρησιμοποιούν επίκαιρα παραδείγματα για να αποτυπώσουν την περιπέτεια της εποχής μας και αναδεικνύουν έτσι την παθολογία των ανεπτυγμένων και γερασμένων κοινωνιών, που πρέπει να αλλάξουν. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο η πρότασή τους γίνεται πολιτική. Ουσιαστικά πολιτική».

Προς το παρόν κλείνω με ένα απόσπασμα από τα Collectanea του Ζήσιμου Λορεντζάτου. Είναι ένα βιβλίο που από τη μέρα που το έπιασα στα χέρια μου στο βιβλιοπωλείο, το έβαλα δίπλα στο κρεβάτι μου και το διαβάζω λίγο λίγο, σημειώνοντας σε χαρτάκια που κολλάω πάνω, ροζ καρδούλες, πορτοκαλί λουλούδια, και κίτρινα παραλληλόγραμμα. Ένα βιβλίο προσευχητάρι…

sie haben mich manche Nachtschicht begleitet.

Und vor einiger Zeit habe ich diesen Song bei youtube entdeckt,
leider kann man das originale Video nicht mehr sehen,
da es in Deutschland das Urheberrecht verletzt,

Jeg er stor fan af musicalen Rent, som jeg så, da den blev uropført i Danmark i 1999. Det var en musical, som gjorde et varigt indtryk. Nok havde jeg set musicals før, men ikke rockmusicals, og den opsætning i Aalborg blæste mig noget bagover. Nu fåes så en optagelse fra sceneudgaven i New York på DVD og Blue-ray. Den har jeg bestilt og glæder mig til at se den.

Den eneste ulempe er, at den ikke er med det originale cast fra 1996. Det ville have været fantastisk at kunne have set Adam Pascal og Anthony Rapp som henholdsvis Roger og Mark, men desværre.

Planting Roots

Perusing Facebook, it has become blatantly obvious that I do not know my family. Either side. Mom and I moved to Texas when I was 12, so that means that almost 19 years have passed since I have been part of the family. My cousins are married and have kids. They have jobs and stories that I’ve never heard of before. They are like strangers to me. And what’s worse, is that they probably know my dad better than I do. They certainly see him more often.

This picture is from Melissa’s wedding, and it was really nice to get all of the Millers (and marrieds) together. I wish I could do that more. I think that there is a Larson family reunion in South Dakota in the fall. I think Grandma, Mom, Linda, and Jo are all planning on attending. I don’t think I really *know* anyone, but it would be nice to meet these people. I have heirlooms that are connected to them sitting here in my house and it would be nice to know their stories and what they have.

There’s just something earthy about family. It’s like I feel like a little transplanted plant that just keeps moving from pot to pot as I get bigger, never really finding my permanent home. Like I have never really been able to just stretch out my roots and grow because I know that I’ve been confined to a crappy little pot.

I have no need for potting soil anymore. I’m home.

Has anyone noticed this sudden extreme idea of being ‘Emo.’ Well, unless you’ve been without any form of human contact, I’m sure you’ve heard and/or seen the latest trend of among teenagers.
those who scream EMO across fucking rooms. What’s the point? Would you scream SCHIZO to a schizophrenic?! There is absolutely no point, as it does nothing but make yourself look like a douche. That’s right, it doesn’t affect the other person whatsoever. SO WHY FUCKING DO IT?

Where did this meaningless term come from? Has anyone actually taken the time to think about the actually meanings of this term? Emo, short for Emotional. Well what the fuck does that have to do with anything? Don’t we all have emotions?! Well, then one would say Emos have over-dramatized emotions about small situations. In that case, wouldn’t you start calling these people Memos?! Who would have thought, we’re all emo’s. Fuck it, i’m not even going to capitialize it anymore.
