On a whim I checked today for my long awaited driver. Voilà.

They had both a 32- and 64-bit driver for Windows 7. About time. They had said that they would have one in November and true to their word they had one with at least five days to spare.

It was v. 7.01 (which is kind of cute given the Windows 7 tie-in). It was, as is always the case with drivers for HP LaserJets, a BIG download … 163.74MB. That is a big for a printer driver.

Downloaded and installed it.

They have SIMPLIFIED the process. THANK YOU.

It is now basically a plug-and-play set-up. Start up the install, plug in the printer.

In total took about 3 minutes.

The USB install was a two step process. Windows 7 first recognized and configured a generic USB port. Then the driver was installed against that port.

It was smooth. It worked. I plugged the HP P1006 into one of the back, USB ports where I had, unsuccessfully, tried my USB hubs yesterday. Per my contention yesterday, my USB ports seem to be fine. Printer was recognized and installed without a hitch.

Tried a duplex [i.e., manual, double sided] print. Worked. But one ANNOYING glitch.

With duplex printing … a TASK is started up … to enable you to reload and restart the printer. That task appears on the TASK BAR … as it should. HP dis NOT create an ICON for that. So an UGLY generic icon appears on my VERY TIDY task bar RUINING its complexion. Damn YOU HP.

Yes, I am selling my HP stock. But, as I mentioned in my November 16 post, not selling it in anger. So I had sold a December $49 call. Though the stock is still flirting with $50, I am making money on the option. So I am laughing. I do not like HP. It is a poorly run company.

But, at least I am happy, a month after my Windows 7 rig was up I finally have a printer attached to it.

My friend Mike, the PC whiz, just managed to install a ‘not-new’ HP all-in-one printer on his Windows 7 rig. He used Windows 7 USB ‘plug-and-play.’ According to him, it worked flawlessly, first time. Windows 7 found the right driver, ONLINE, installed it … and as we say in the U.K. “Bob, was his uncle” [though in his case "Bob, is his friend'].

Mike, ever the optimist, urged me to try my LaserJet HP P1006 again. You may recall that I was totally foiled, a week ago, from trying to install this relatively new, and still in production, printer on my Windows 7 rig.

Well, it only took 2 minutes for Windows 7 to tell me, not once, but twice that I was out of luck. That is the advantage of my ‘fast’ rig. You get BAD NEWS real quick. You don’t get to sit back and wait for mesmerizingly spinning egg timers. Error messages flash at you even before you have stopped typing.

No compatible printer driver. Damn you, HP!

Well, in my dotage, I know better than to sell stock based on emotion. That guy Jim Cramer, on CNBC ‘Mad Money,‘ taught me that. So I didn’t sell my HP stock immediately. Though, miracles of miracles (as they said on ‘Fiddler on the Roof’) I have actually made money on it … though I had owned it DURING the downturn of the last 18 months! So, I did some option action. Milked a few more cents BEFORE I get rid of it. Joys of old age. You no longer cut your nose to spite your face. But that is IT. I am done with HP.

By the way, IF you own an HP all-in-one or inkjet printer and wonder why they jam so often. Very simple. Look at a comparable Epson. See the difference. HP tries to FIGHT GRAVITY! I am not kidding. Take a look. HP insists on feeding paper from underneath. So the rollers have to overcome gravity to feed them through the printer. Now take a look at an Epson. Other way around. Always TOP FEED. Work with gravity. If you know Latin, QED. As I have mentioned I, for a brief but very enjoyable stint, sold Epson printers at BestBuy. Selling against HP was easier than stealing grapes from a goldfish. It was a hoot. There used to be an HP rep. I would outsell him 4::1 most days, 8::1 on better days. One day, I switched a customer over when the HP rep. went back to pick up a printer. When he came back his ‘customer’ was gone. He was looking all over. He then finally asks me “you didn’t sell him an Epson, did you?” I am honest, as the day is long. I admitted that I did. He knew I was on a mission. To make sure BestBuy customers always ended up with the Best printers. We were cool. We were ‘friends.’ He knew I owned HP share. He didn’t.

Screen Capture From HP on Nov. 12, 1009 -- What Gives?

I tried to install my 19 month old HP LaserJet P1006 on my Windows 7 rig a few days ago and failed abysmally because HP still does NOT have Windows 7 drivers for it!

Tells you to come back in late November.

This would be kind of funny if not for the fact that HP got caught short, with their pants around their ankles, on this same issue with Vista. I know … because I was doing a sweet gig, as a Weekend Warrior selling Epsom printers. Epsom had Vista drivers. HP didn’t. It was Christmas 2007.

I am a long-term HP share holder. But, I am going to get out of HP. They really are poorly run. The announcement last night that they are going to buy 3Com confirmed that. All that HP does is buy companies hoping to find the right synergy.

Before I had this Windows 7 rig built, I looked at buying a high-end HP i7 system. But, as is my wont, I researched the machines on the Web. HP had a HUGE motherboard problem with i7s.

They are supposed to be #1 or #2 in terms of the world’s largest IT corporation. They are tight with Intel and Microsoft. But, they can’t properly support i7 or Windows 7.

Given the way that LaserJets are installed, I can’t even trick Windows 7 into accepting the Vista 64-bit driver. I tried. I checked the Web. Others too had tried.

I wrote THIS about this printer, that I purchased from Best Buy (Concord, NH), shortly after I had installed it:

What’s great about it: Decent print quality. Inexpensive. Fast. What’s not so great: Untested, poorly designed driver software. “This is a GREAT little printer, at a decent price, if ALL you want to do is straight, 1-up, ‘nothing fancy’ printing. If you want to do double sided printing, with say some ’tiling’ to center the output etc. — be prepared to get very frustrated and waste paper/toner trying to get it right. Just ask it to do 2 copies of a double-sided document and it will go for a loop. There are NO printed installation instructions. You can’t just slide in the HP CD-ROM and then use Windows ADD A NEW Printer. Got to use HP’s printer installation process — which is counter intuitive. As an HP shareholder I applaud the trouble HP has gone to cut costs. But they have gone too far. Add $20 to the price and TEST the driver software. Include at least a ONE SHEET quick install guide in 3 languages. I will not be buying another HP printer any time soon. I got this for a specific project. As soon as that is done I will throw it away. I couldn’t give it to even a charity knowing that the driver software is way below par.”

PCR for the HP P1005 and P1505

NASHUA, NH – Oasis Imaging Products, Inc. has introduced a new aftermarket replacement Primary Charge Roller for the HP P1005/1006/1007/1008/1505 family of LaserJet Printers.

As with all Primary Charge Rollers, the Oasis PCR for the HP P1005 (# P4CR20) needs to discharge a negative charge to the OPC Drum to produce the intended output. The Oasis PCR emulates the OEM PCR in its physical characteristics being a hard rubber surface as well as its operational performance in meeting OEM yields and BID ratings.

When the OEM PCR begins to fail and is not properly charging the OEM Drum, your test pages will show some backgrounding. Typically the OEM PCR will perform well through the initial two or three cycles, but it should be scrutinized from the third cycle forward. The aftermarket Oasis PCR has been produced with durability but it also has been produced at a reasonable cost. It joins the long line of high quality PCRs currently being offered by Oasis.

It’s been over a month since Apple shipped MacOS 10.6 Snow Leopard. It’s been over a month since I’ve been able to print to my current-model HP LaserJet P1505 printer. The interesting point is not the printing glitch, which is inexcusable, but the amazing support that one HP employee is providing. The 1000+ messages about HP printing problems in the Apple.com discussion forums are testament to both the problems and the level of support.

HP had a year’s notice to update their drivers and somehow Snow Leopard shipped without drivers for many HP printers. HP has released more drivers but some don’t work properly. BusinessWeek covered this fiasco a week after Snow Leopard was released, but they optimistically thought HP would fix it soon. For whatever reason, an HP employee named Andrew Mitchell with the handle HP Mac Architect has chosen to spend his free time providing technical support on Apple’s website. Andrew has counselled patience and helped anybody who wanted to throw their printers out the window. And he’s done this all on top of doing his own job. Andrew, you should be commended for your efforts. Memo to HP: Give Andrew a big bonus this year!

While I should be enraged by HP’s screwup, Andrew reminds me of my time at a small software company in 1994. My employer shipped a buggy product and I enjoyed providing technical support “online” in addition to my normal duties because I was so addicted to the online world. Of course, online in 1994 meant our BBS, CompuServe, GEnie, AOL, and newsgroups. It took my company two years to fix the long list of problems so there were many flames, but like Andrew, I helped any way I could and counselled patience.

While the CompuServe, GEnie, and AOL messages are long gone, newsgroups will live on forever. I scanned some old messages just now and I saw that my departure from the firm created an online support void with customers asking where I was and why nobody was helping them. Andrew, when the last drivers are working and the noise has subsided, you need to either post a note thanking everybody for their patience and directing future questions to HP’s 1-800 number, or you need your employer to add online support to your job description so that it will continue after you move on.

Achtung ein “Cold Reset” löscht alle Einstellungen, die sie am Drucker konfiguriert haben!

Um einen “Kaltstart” beim HP Laserjet 5000 durchzuführen:
- Gerät ausschalten
- Taste GO gedrückt halten ud Gerät einschalten
- Auf dem Display erscheint “Initializing”
- Taste loslassen
- Nach wenigen Sekunden erscheint “Restoring Factors Setting” und der Drucker geht offline. Die Routine ist abgeschlossen
- Drucker online schalten

Sie erhalten im Display die Meldung “79.xxxx”, dies bedeutet, dass die Druckerdaten nicht korrekt verarbeitet werden können.

Mögliche Ursachen und Abhilfe:
Der Drucker konnte die Datenmenge nicht verarbeiten und der Druckauftrag liegt noch an - alle Druckaufträge löschen und aus einen anderen Anwendung eine Testseite drucken.

-Netzwerkkabel / Paralleles Druckerkabel tauschen. Ggfls einen anderen Druckeranschluss benutzen.

- Speichererweiterung, Eine nach der Anderen, entfernen und jedesmal eine Tesseite drucken.

- “Cold Reset” durchführen. Hier im BLOG

NASHUA, NH – Oasis Imaging Products, Inc. has released products for the HP CP2025 Color LaserJet Printer (also CM2320 Color MFP) that will provide OEM-like quality of output. This new line of HP Color printers can print at speeds up to 21 pages per minute in both monochrome and color, as well as producing a great graphics production.

Oasis now has the four color toners available (Oasis Part # 15TNBL20100, 15TNCY2080, 15TNMA2080 and 15TNYE2080) that work with the OEM OPC drum as well as with the Oasis Drum (#15DR3050). There is also a set of color specific chips to provide an OEM like operation of the printer (Oasis # 15CH20BL, 15CH20C, 15CH20M and15CH20Y).

Utilizing the Oasis Toner and Chips will provide a great economical option for remanufacturing this great new HP printer. With the major Office Supply Stores selling these cartridges for more than $120 each, this cartridge will present a very profitable addition to your line of remanufactured cartridges.

Der Wartungszähler beim HP Laserjet 4100 ist auf 200.000 Seiten eingestellt. Nach erreichen der 200.000 Seiten sollte ein Wartungskit eingebaut werden. Im Wartungskit sind die wichtigsten Verschleißteile, wie Einzugsrollen, Transferrolle, Seperationspads und die Heizeinheit/Fuser enthalten.
