Phoenix cada vez mais se consagrando na cena musical esse ano, e pra fechar com chave de ouro, lançou um CD remixado do ótimo “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”, com remixes de bandas como Passion Pit, Animal Collective, Friendly Fires, Yacht, etc.

O CD dá uma nova vida ao disco, e especialmente em “Lasso”, que consegue ser a única do disco melhor do que a original (confira a original aqui).

Com vocais regravados, batidas, guitarras e sintetizadores completamente novos na música (que chega a incluir coros e palmas nesta versão), afirmo que essa deveria ser a versão que devia ter vindo no CD.

Lasso (2 Door Cinema Club Remix)

So far the kids learned using the move, marquee and lasso tools. Yesterday’s class they made more using these tools with their photos. I taught them to apply feather to a selected area. They also learned to extract a selected area from an image. They worked with their own photos. They changed their eye color to green and their hair color to pink; darkened their eye brows and colored their lips. They adjusted the colors of the selected area by using the sliders in the hue saturation panel. They also merged different photos.

Yesterday they also had a competition. The team of youngsters visiting them every Saturday who will also take tuition to them arranged some games and they gave prizes to the kids. They were from an IT company based in Chennai and they will come most of the weekends to cheer the kids. They were also helping the pastor who is taking care of the home to get treatment and dialysis.

Yesterday one of the kids named Bhavani looked sad in the class with her eyes filled with tears.  She was speechless when I asked why she so sad. But her face became bright at the end of class.

Lundi 19 octobre. Paris, le Zénith. 20h. Concert de PHOENIX.

Après une première partie: Chairlift et son horrible volume sonore, aux fréquences basses et saturées, insoutenable, désolée c’était vraiment pas possible… NEXT!

On arrive enfin aux Versaillais de Phoenix.
C’est parti. Six sur scène cette fois. Premières 30 minutes à enchaîner les tubes de leur dernier album ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ sans un mot.
Mise en scène et son hyper léchés, comme si on écoutait l’album dans son salon. Aie! On a un peu peur sur le moment, mais tout va se bousculer juste après Litztomania; avec un Thomas Mars, le chanteur, qui nous lâche un « On a jamais eu autant de monde à Paris. Merci Charly », le public se réveille enfin, il saute ( si, si, on Pogote sur du Phoenix, j’vous jure!), chante et se balance au son de Fences, Lasso, Consolation Prizes. Des jeux de lumières fous:  néons multicolores, stroboscopes et tutti quanti.

Ils nous ont sortis le grand jeu, The big show, les petits Versaillais!

Puis vient le rappel après 1h de set ( Mouais !), avec du Too Young, du If I ever feel better (en version Rock, s’il vous plaît), et un final sur 1901 assez grandiose! Tout le Zenith est debout, les gens sont en parfaite communion avec le groupe… ils ressentent, quoi !

Perso, j’ai aimé le concert, n’étant pas la fan ultime de Phoenix, l’ambiance y était, on peut dire qu’ils ont mis le ‘Feu’ (comme Johnny!!! Heu … ouais, bof!).

Le passage guitare/voix de Everything is Everything était à tomber. Mais pour certains puristes Rock, qui n’apprécient guère ce genre ‘POP’,(mon boyfriend en somme), ce concert fût une mauvaise idée cadeaux!A en croire son impatience et son jugement, Phoenix est un groupe pour midinettes, bien poli, bien léché, sans fioritures. Soit un concert beaucoup trop clean musicalement.

Il se contentera désormais du disque.

Nous dirons que son amour envers Phoenix restera ‘platinique’!

Ever have a picture that you really liked of yourself, only to find it ruined by background hijinks, or bad memories of an ex? With a little bit of Photoshop know-how, you can solve this problem. Today I’m going to discuss the polygon lasso tool.

Photoshop’s toolset is a large reason for its success and adoption in the design industry. Most home users can crop a photo, and resize an image, but what most people don’t know is you can cut out people or objects, and use them in other projects, or remove them all together. The polygon lasso tool is a point to point tool that traces an object based on your clicks. It allows you to follow the edge of an object and precisely click its surrounding edges.

The tool isn’t perfect, and it is based on your perception of the edge. The tool operates on a point to point basis, and links those points with a straight line. In order to manage curves, the user must click many straight line points around the curve to give the perception of rounding.

This tool works surprisingly well, and you can use other features like edge feather, a technique to blend the edge you are cutting to fix pixel to pixel transition, to enhance it’s success. This is important if you have a person on a black background to cut out, and then having to paste them on a white background. This will add transparency to the edge so the person or object doesn’t have a dark edge on that new white background.

Overall I find the polygon lasso tool to be one of the most useful tools available to designers, and I can see it being appreciated for the home user as well. Use it to make creative invitations, or add interesting backgrounds to your images. If anything it will allow me to see myself in Mexico this winter, even though I won’t get to physically go there.

I just got done wiping my drive, loading Snow Leopard, and restoring my files from a cloned backup. Almost everything worked as expected. The Lasso-user refused to be restored — it never finished calculating the directory size, and I had to deselect it to continue the restoration process. Once I was back up and running, I reinstalled iTools9, Tenon’s PHP and MySQL add-ons, and Lasso 8.5.6. I had to copy and paste from the old virtual host config file to the new one, but that brought everything up except MySQL.

As hard as I tried, I couldn’t get the MySQL Server to launch. I messed around with it for hours. I read log files, re-re-installed applications. I re-restarted the machine. I manually launched and re-launched executables. Nothing seemed to work. The only other symptom remotely associated was that in the iTools9 Admin site, the System Status pane took an enormous amount of time to load, sometimes never loading.

Finally I thought to just wipe everything associated with webserving, and re-install again. I thought I’d start by removing the extra users on the system. So, I swapped over to my admin-account, brought up System Preferences, selected the MySQL-user, and clicked the delete key. Something strange happened, the MySQL-user didn’t dissapear, but it did change names from “MySQL” to “MySQL Server”.

I thought that perhaps there were two MySQL-user accounts, and one had been masking the other. So before I did anything else, I jumped back to my client-account, brought up the iTools Admin site, and opened the System Status pane. It opened up immediately — no long delay like before. Then I clicked the “restart” button for MySQL Server, and MySQL started right up.

I don’t know if my assumption, of there being two MySQL-user accounts, is exactly correct. But, everything’s working now, and I’m just hoping this helps someone else. When I upgrade the operating system in the future, I’ll not restore the MySQL-user in the first place, instead just let the iTools instal create a new user, and manually import the data-files from the cloned backup.

The rain fell as the music filled the park. Mud seethed underfoot and gushed between toes. Among the strong aromas and beautiful sounds, the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival came alive and offered another memorable year of music. Although environmental factors change from year to year, from stifling heat and dust to drenching rain and mud, the show never stopped. The music continued. And Austin proved itself again as the live music capitol of the world.

I caught Dr. Dog at the Dell Stage for my first show. I found these boys from Philadelphia to be quite harmonic, reminiscent of the psychadelia rock of the Beatles and The Byrds. Songs like “The Breeze” and “The Old Days” displayed that smooth 1960s sound. But my favorite song on the set list was “The Rabbit, The Bat & The Reindeer.”

I had heard of Phoenix, but I had never listened to their music. A friend convinced me to see this alternative rock band from Versaille, France. The comparisons to their French peers Daft Punk and Air interested me. Ultimately I understood the comparisons, finding the sound close to a New Order-like electronica pop. Phoenix pleasantly surprised me with tunes like “Lisztomania,” “Lasso,” “If I Ever Feel Better,” “Fences,” “Girlfriend,” “Run Run Run,” “Too Young,” “Rome,” and “1901.” Many of the songs appear on the new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

The best show of the day came from the Somalian born/Canadian based rapper k’naan. Under the Wildflower Tent the slender Somalian rocked the crowd with political prose, heart-felt lyrics, and blistering beats. Appropriate adjectives include humble, inspirational, and talented.  k’naan had a broad appeal, drawing young children and old people, and all those between the young and old. An intimate performance captivated the crowd.

The track “T.I.A. [Explicit]” thundered bass as K’naan introduced the crowd to his unique brand of hip-hop. “T.I.A.” samples Bob Marley’s classic ska tune “Simmer Down,” layers it over heavy beats, and atop raps the brilliant young wordsmith. In Africa, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, 2pac, and The Notorious B.I.G. reign supreme. k’naan studied these great performers and his sound reflects those influences. Yet the sound is original. The music is gangsta but peaceful, hard but soft, and always chalk full of the contradictions and realities of life.

From Africa the Somalian took us on a trip to “America.” On the album, Mos Def and Chali 2Na join the track with their rhymes on the studio version of “America,”  but solo and live K’naan brought this song to its full potential without the help of these great lyricists. The song “Take A Minute” brought emotion to the tent. The following love ballad “Fatima” lightened the mood. And then the hardcore rap song “ABC’s” (with a Chubb Rock sample) rocked the and rolled with pure energy.

K’naan then sang a song about “Somalia,” which brought tears to the crowd’s eyes. The lyricist played two different versions beginning with an acapella and moving into a full band version. As K’naan says “his real will makes your real look like a rental.” This track talks about the perils of childhood in Somalia and the suffering of the people. K’naan harnesses the pain and realities of the world and turns them into amazing poetry. The rapper followed the tear jerker with “Bang Bang,” a nice jamming pop tune. And he ended his set with the a sing-a-long to “Wavin’ Flag.”

K’naan was the highlight of the evening. But the jams continued with Thievery Corporation. The dub electronica duo and band played on the main stage this year kicking out funky electronica with “.” The crew from Washington, D.C. also played the sitar heavy “Mandala,” displaying their unique acumen at world music.

In a testimony to the diversity of the music at ACL I caught parts of sets from the Texas country group Reckless Kelly and the hard-rocking new super trio Them Crooked Vultures. Them Crooked Vultures features bassist John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, drummer David Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters, and Josh Homme the guitarist and lead singer from Queens Of The Stone Age. Kings Of Leon headlined Friday night playing their hits “Sex On Fire,”
”On Call,” and
”Use Somebody.”

The  music continued after the festival at the ACL after shows. I went to a Township Records showcase at the Ghost Room downtown on 4th Street in the Warehouse District. I caught the end of Danny Malone’s set. This kid has a beautifully haunting voice. My wife described him as a creepy James Taylor. His new album Cuddlebug features the eerie track “Basement.” Graham Wilkinson & the Underground Township played some of my favorite tracks from the new album Yearbook, including “Ragamuffin” and “Let It Go.”

This film actually came out back around early August or late July, but my sister and I just watched it and were really surprised with how great and fun it was.  Click for the full review.

So, my apartment’s very cold right now which makes typing a slow process because my hands get freezing quickly.

Anyway, Lillian and I watched this Saturday night, and it actually got us to laugh aloud.

The story basically follows the origin of Wonder Woman and Diana’s first adventure off the island.  The action switches off from being gigantic battles to smaller one on one or one on a couple fights.  I think the action and animation really sores when it’s just Wonder Woman fighting one or two others in some area.  During a mall fight scene halfway through the film, I felt pretty involved with the fight, and it didn’t seem like the typical trade off of the upper hand common in most fight scenes even in conventional film.

Fight scenes aside, I found the rest of the film compelling as well.  They attempt to make a sexism appeal to viewers showing how women are powerful too, and it sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails.  These are typically through the character of Steve Trevor, and his entire belief system typically changes after meeting the single female that could shift his world: Wonder Woman.

I was pretty surprised to see that they actually showed Diana killing things.  Sure, they were undead/weird creature things, but it was impressive.  This Diana is a bit different than the one in comics today.

If you have free time and want a decent animated film to watch that will mostly just entertain but not enlighten (which seems to be the only point for this film), then check it out.  It succeeds in its goals.

A Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) is a formatted string used to identify something with reasonable confidence that the identifier will never be unintentionally repeated by anyone for anything else. This is useful for example in creating table-entries with unique IDs, which you might need to merge with another table and not have conflicting ID’s or need to generate new ID’s.

B_UUID is the second installment in my B-Suite of custom types, and is a pure-Lasso method of generating a version 4 (random) Universally Unique Identifier (UUID). The usage is very simple, you simply call the prototype, and the call is replaced by a new UUID.

Other methods of creating a UUID in Lasso

1. On most operating systems, using Jason Huck’s Shell tag, or the built in OS_Process tag, the `uuidgen` command can be used to return a version 4 UUID.
2. Steffan Cline has recently posted a cross-platform LJAPI module, GetUUID, that is most likely faster than any solution written in Lasso Script, or certainly any solution that needs to open a shell.
3. My understanding is that when LassoSoft releases Lasso 9 (most likely October, 2009) that the built in Lasso_UniqueID will generate a version 4 UUID, similar to B_UUID.

After sauntering around town picking up some checks (how fun!) I stopped in at Inven.tory where they were having the launch party for a beautiful and price savvy line of one of a kind key jewelry! There were bountiful amounts of free pizza from Lasso and baby vamps and I ate it all…mwhaha! Then we flitted off into the night and went underground… to Submercer for James Murphy’s FASHION WEEK IS OVER party… Chatted with Aussie hunks, saved baby bear from Aussie hunks burning them…danced to some disco, saw lots of friends… ran off into the night for more pizza!

Today, Brittani, April, Sean and I went to a rodeo — April and my first!

Naturally, I had nothing to wear, so Brittani graciously accompanied me on a trip to Cavendar’s, a western apparel store, where we marveled at the cowboy paraphernalia and managed to find the perfect sleeveless, pearl snap, red plaid shirt for me — complete with embroidered sunflowers.

For some bizarre reason, however, we could find no chaps …

I didn't realize boots were so expensive -- I saw pairs for $578. Brittani said they're an investment; "If you meet a real authentic cowboy, I guarantee he'll lift up his jeans to show off his boots."

Leather? Snakeskin? Leopard? Zebra? .... Neon?

This is where you could test out boots in saddle stirrups. And yes, I know I look ridiculous.

I did NOT buy this shirt, though I was tempted by an "All-Natural Farm Girl" shirt, purely for the irony.

Rampant laughter and mockery ensued. Apparently, he’d said, “Just holler if y’all need something, okay?”

I captured this rusty look tap earlier today, continuing my campaign to exclusively use the 50mm Prime.

1. I create two background copies
2. Then on the first layer I use the lasso tool around the larger blemishes
3. Dragging the outline to a ‘clean’ area of the picture, I simply copied and pasted over the blemish, automatically creating it’s own layer.  Now at this point you’ll end up creating quite a few layers so hide all you other layers after you have finished and simply merge visable.  I took the erase tool and set it to about 50% and ran around the edges of the pasted areas to soften them
4. On the second of the two background copies I used the spot healing brush set to Darken (drop down at the top of the screen) this takes example pixels from nearby so dont use a large brush, just one large enought ot cover the spot and click away!

So I have three layers, and finally I add a little viginette but thats a personal preference! Here’s a shot with the layers included! Give me a shout if I can help with your photographs!

I’m working on several custom tags and types for release to the Lasso community. Collectively I’m refering to these as b-suite. I’ve created a new project up on Google Code, and as each new tag or type is released, I’ll add it to this project.

I’ve chosen to release this code under the MIT License, which seems to me to provide all the rights you could possibly want. If your organization requires anything more, please contact me.

At this time b-suite is coded for Lasso 8.5.5. I have several custom tags and types planned for inclusion, and have Lasso 9 versions in the works.
