Since winning the Academy Award in 2006 for “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” off of the Hustle & Flow soundtrack and becoming the first Black music group to win best song, Memphis’ own Three 6 Mafia has continued to find a way to keep their name in the mainstream.

With Laws of Power on the horizon for 2010, Three 6 is bringing another reality show to TV with a show called Cooking Ain’t Easy which is set to premier on VH1 next year.

This will serve as the group’s second show. Back in 2007, the Mafia had the television series Adventures in Hollyhood as the group was beginning to embrace their newfound stardom and trying to find a way to make their next big hit.

From the major shift in creativity for their last project Last 2 Walk, the group has clearly found the formula to appeal to the masses after being in the game since 1991.

The group has maintained its presence on the television, being featured on shows such as Beauty and the Geek, Numb3rs, The Girls Next Door and countless others.

During an exclusive interview with HipHopWired, DJ Paul and Juicy J provided more detail for the upcoming cooking show.

“We got a cooking show coming up, it’s a television show. It’s a reality show called Cooking Ain’t Easy, we got one dude from Adventures in Hollyhood; Big Triece, me and Paul. We cooking different kinds of food. We get challenged by big chefs to cook different kinds of food; Indian food, Mexican food, Jewish food, Japanese food, Chinese, whatever.”

“We cook the food and we let the fans that sit in the crowd walk up and taste the food and let them decide if they like it or not. If they like it, they like it, if they hate they gonna say it’s garbage. It’s a funny show, you’ll laugh but you’ll learn something as you watch the show.”

Ensuring that all the yellow tape is cleared up, Juicy J assures that the show is getting the green light from the station, but there are still things to sort out before it airs.

“We doing the negotiations with VH1 so it looks like everything is falling into place, probably sometime next year. I really don’t have a date, but sometime next year.”

Who would have thought that the group that said “Slob on My Knob” would stand to be so prominent in the mainstream’s eye? Fooled the sh*t outta me.

Author: Jake Paine

originally posted on hiphopdx.com

The last eight years of Project Pat’s career have been spent trying to balance the street authenticity of his Ghetty Green debut with the commercial success of Mista Don’t Play, resulting in three lackluster major and indie releases, divided by jail sentences. Real Recognize Real, Pat’s first album with Asylum Records, somehow gets it all right. With the same uncensored, label-less approach that Pat started with, he’s complemented with the best beats from DJ Paul and Juicy J ’s [click to read] itinerary in quite some time.

From a class of pioneers in his own right, Pat has furthered his message, but adapted to the Young Jeezy [click to read] class that’s come after. “Dead In The Streets” carries that same trapper’s commandment delivery, but with Pat’s own brand of finely aged wisdom, and the speckled past that makes his rhymes all the realer. Conversely, “Talk That Gangsta” takes it back to the No Limit/Bounce era of simple choruses, busier production and the very beginnings of what made the clubs get so torn up a decade ago. Pat brings his celebrated career and rich legacy in the Gucci duffle bag that today’s younger audience comes looking for in their rhymes.

DJ Paul and Juicy J went with a more soulful sound than heard on last year’s Three 6 Mafia Last 2 Walk [click to read] album. Songs like “Keep It Hood,” are sample-driven with the aggressive drum programming that has made hits for over a decade and a half. The same is true of “I Be Fresh,” another song that’s simpler subject matter is contrasted with glowing sampling, and trigger-happy production

In a project without credits, liner notes and much marketing, Project Pat appears liberated in avoiding the same label structure that pulled him up from Hypnotized Minds Records nine years ago. Then again, this album’s few flaws lie in songs like “Horny” or “Pogo Stick” that either are pandering to strip-club spins or simply poor A&R-ing, looking for ringtone crossover. While sex and strip club culture has always been a staple of Pat’s arsenal, neither record comes off as more than a poor imitation of “Chickenhead 2009.”

Minor flaws aside, Project Pat made his best album in close to a decade. The rhymes, themes and production line up in a way that finds that gritty non-fiction of the street, with some veteran rapper bravado, and beats that bang harder in your trunk than anything yet in 2009. Real Recognize Real is one of the few examples of a veteran rapper, applying his artistic lessons learned to the same way he entered the game – with a ski mask on.

Memphis artist Kia Shine recently was in the midst of an alleged altercation with fellow hometown group Three 6 Mafia. Last week, the group had a meet and greet at Cats music store in Midtown Memphis, TN to support their new album “Last 2 Walk.” Kia Shine decided to make an appearance showing support by letting them know that he purchased the album. According to the video footage, which was videoed by Conversation Piece Magazine, the group thanked him for purchasing the album and then after Kia Shine walked away, footage shows DJ Paul yelling at Kia Shine.

“When you first started off you did New York style music, and when it didn’t work, then you started doing down south music,” stated DJ Paul to Kia Shine. “Naw you not M Town because you never did M Town music until other sh*t didn’t sell n*gga,” DJ Paul continued. The video does not show Kia Shine on camera at all during these words, so it is not known whether he was still in attendance or left the building. Juicy J also joined in by yelling, “Shut the f*ck up!”

When asked whether he was aware of what was going on at the moment, Kia Shine said “when I first got off the stage I didn’t even hear the sh*t and then when I went to YouTube all of this sh*t was a surprise to me too because I didn’t even see the sh*t they was all saying. I wasn’t even there.”

Kia Shine said to WordofSouth.com that he in fact did not appreciate that a video was put together. “Y’all some YouTube goons. Why when I was right there in front of y’all, y’all n*ggas was dappin’ and smiling and sh*t or whatever, but when I leave, y’all on that bullsh*t.”

As previously stated the video was shot by Conversation Piece Magazine, so it is not known if they were in connection with Three 6 Mafia, but Kia Shine takes issue with them because of the way the video was shot and music on the video making it seem like Kia Shine was hating on Three 6 Mafia. “I’m there to show support to these n*ggas, I was just with them at the BET Awards, and I’ve been with them like four or five different times since then. If I thought that it would have been an issue, I would not have come up there in the first place, so that’s what really threw me because, damn, we were just together.”

Kia Shine also stated that he is in the process of editing a response to the video and should be out within the next few days, but did say that he planned to reach out to DJ Paul and Juicy J regarding the situation. “I’m definitely going to have a conversation with them.”

Kia Shine released his latest album “Due Season” last July under Universal Motown, but has since left the label, but is currently in talks with another label. He is working on a new album titled “Respect Due” which he said should be released sometime in 2009. He also plans to release “The Kush” DVD later on this year.

I had high hopes for Three 6 Mafia’s ninth album “Last 2 Walk,” their first since becoming Grammy aw

I had high hopes for Three 6 Mafia’s ninth album “Last 2 Walk,” their first since becoming Grammy award winners, especially since their last single “Gotta Stay Fly” was one of the most catchy and addictive songs ever. Unfortunately few tracks on “Last 2 Walk” boast the same kind of crossover appeal that their previous album was known for.

The CD starts off with one of the best intros I’ve ever experienced. They actually trick you into thinking your CD is broken. I was streaming the album so I didn’t fall for their trap but could easily imagine the plight of someone putting the CD into their car right after buying it only to find out its scratched.

The first actual song “I got it,” samples zombie nation and will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has ever been to a sporting event. However, it’s the most generic rap song ever with lyrics like “I got money I got clothes, I got whips.” Nowadays every rapper has this stuff so it’s not really something to brag about anymore.

About halfway through the album I came across “DSX Talk,” an interlude with a great spelling lesson for the kids. It’s essentially an advertisement for their site entitled “dangerus skandalus.” Seriously guys you’re only perpetuating the stereotypes.

“First 48” is definitely the coolest song on the album. The beat is something of a classical composition given the hip hop makeover. The result is an appealing contrast between the beat and the gruff and powerful voices of the rapping duo.

Their first single off the new album “Lolli Lolli” is as poppy a song as anything else released in the past few years. The hook is the groups attempt to mimic T-Pain as a robotic voice shouts out the lyrics, annoying if you ask me.

The Memphis duo has created an album that stays true to its fanbase, unfortunately for them it means some pretty cool beats paired with unoriginal hooks and really simple rhymes.

Release Date: June 24, 2008 Album: Last 2 Walk Rating: ★★★ Review: Three 6 Mafia b

Release Date: June 24, 2008

Album: Last 2 Walk

Rating: ★★★

Review: Three 6 Mafia begin the album with a prankster-style intro: “get the fuck out of here, your CD ain’t messed up man I had to fuck wit you a lil bit because I’m gone and I’m lit.” It’s funny. The standout single Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body) is straight fire. The rest of the record is not nearly as commercial. In fact, the album is exactly what you would expect from Juicy J and DJ Paul: gritty street joints. Two tracks that exemplify the street grit are Id Rather, which repeats the following refrain for the first minute: “I love having sex but I’d rather get some head” and Weed Blow Pills, which is Three 6’s favorite song on the album. We recommend checking out That’s Right featuring Akon and On Some Chrome featuring UGK. The album also includes two versions of My Own Way, a collaboration with Good Charlotte. Other collaborators include Project Pat, Lyfe Jennings, Lil Wyte, Eightball, MJG and more.
