This tax incentive was started in the later 1800s to keep people living here; and, of course, to help Italy keep an eye on its land and borders. These hardships didn’t stop at poverty back then either. Because of an altitude over 1800 meters, Livigno suffered inadequate supply shipments, snubbing by the Italian government, frostbiting cold and death-swallowing avalanches. The last one killed seven people, destroyed more than a dozen houses and left a chilling wake of snow cover until the spring thaw. In fact, the first papers documenting the area-from the Middle Ages-referred to Livigno as “vinea et vineola.” This actually translates from German to “Avalanche”-a seriously hard place to make a living.

The first people to come to Livigno were shepherds, poor migrants who toiled the land into something productive. Today, the sons and daughters of those shepherds enjoy a much easier way of life. Not only are more people bringing business and jobs, but also there are more economic opportunity and advancement. Neither Italy nor the EU rebuffs Livigno today. The area even has one of Italy’s highest birth rates, corroborating the census that life here is finally getting easier.

The Livigno resort itself is located a few meters over 1800 meters. The Akua Granda or Spol River passes through the area year round. Livigno is part of the Italian Alps, though Switzerland has some rights to the mountain as they are close by. If bargain hunters are looking for last minute deals in the Alps-with tax-free benefits to boot-Livigno may be the best place to search.

The ski area itself is best suited to beginner and intermediate level skiers, located right above the Valtellina alpine valley near Switzerland. Historically speaking, Livigno Italian ski resort was visited by only a few outsiders and mainly catered to an Italian crowd. Because of newfound fascination, Livigno receives foreigners from England, Austria, Germany, and even Canada, the USA and Brazil. The slopes are guaranteed snow crusted while the prices are assuredly cheaper than higher-brow ski resorts. With Swiss prices so close and other Alps resorts closer, Livigno makes just as much economic sense as somewhere closer to home. (Hint: There’s an airport two hours away. Getting here for a quick getaway is possible.)

The numbers tell why people are flocking to Livigno Italian ski resort, booking all-inclusive or last-minute packages. There are a total of 57 runs-six black, 25 blue and 26 red-plus kilometers of downhill pistes. If you like to get off the slopes, then you can try your skis at some 40 km of cross-country routes. There are over 30 lifts capable of transporting over 45,000 skiers and snowboarders per hour. The highest lift can take you to 3000 meters and with the lowest at 1800 meters-that’s a difference of 1200 meters-snow is assured (24 snow cannons provided)! I’ve been seeing more and more photo albums pop up on people Facebook pages in the weeks since Halloween and there is a growing phenomenon which continues to bother me.  Halloween is all about costumes, the scary ones, the creepy ones, the slutty ones, the funny and or really clever ones… they’re all good.  Sometimes even the last-minute ones can be the most inventive and at least show a little bit of thought and effort.  You know the kind: the guy who shows up wearing a hefty bag because he’s “white trash”. The definition of a costume is dress or garb characteristic of another period, place, person, etc.

That being said there are certain last-minute effortless costumes that bother me. The kind that you might as well not even bother with. There is always the girl who puts on some leggings and basically all of the ugly colorful things she owns and is a generic 80’s montage of a person… cop-out.  And there is the guy who wears a wife beater and jeans and says he’s a redneck… it’s not a costume if it’s your real life buddy. But the one I have been seeing all over the place that really aggravates me is girls wearing football jerseys and jeans with maybe some team colored ribbons in their hair or some black smudges under their eyes if you’re lucky.  What are you supposed to be? A sports fan? Because if you owned that jersey already you are a fan… so it’s not a costume it’s… what you wear on Sundays. A football player? I’m going to at least need some spandex pants to go with or maybe you could cleverly fashion some kind of pads? You know… try a little.

Oh I know! If it’s an Aaron Rogers jersey you might be going as me for Halloween.  Now that’s a clever costume.  So dear 20 something girls, if that’s the best you can do, don’t even bother next time.  Or do us all a favor and make a $20 trip to the local Party City and buy… ANYTHING!

Anyway…guess it was just meant to be…and guess the bright side is, I had company while figuring it all out, which I couldn’t seem to find the patience for on my own….so

Thank you, Mr. Customer Service Man.  I have yet to do the LABORIOUS work that awaits me…but I now I know how!

Nachdem ich ja gestern schon über meine Neuentdeckung geschrieben habe, hatte ich heute vormittag Zeit, Lust und die Gelegenheit, nochmal allein und mit Muse in den Glasperlenladen BEADS-N-MORE zu gehen. Ich hatte schon eine ziemlich genaue Vorstellung davon, dass ich mir eine Kette aus schwarzen, facettierten Glasperlen machen wollte, vielleicht ein bißchen aufgelockert mit rubinroten Perlen.

Dort angekommen entledigte ich mich erstmal des überflüssigen Ballastes wie Mantel, Schal und Handtasche, ließ mir ein “Bead Design Board” in die Hand drücken – eine überaus praktische Sache – und fing mal an, in den vielen Bechern mit den unterschiedlichsten Perlen zu stöbern. Wow! Man ist wirklich gut beraten, wenn man vorher schon in etwa weiß, was man machen möchte, sonst ist man vor lauter Inspiration hin und her gerissen.

Ich legte also diverse Perlen in die dafür vorgesehene Rinne, legte andere dazwischen und entwickelte sozusagen beim Aussuchen das Design der Kette. Letzlich blieb es dann nicht bei schwarzen mit roten Glasperlen, sondern es kamen noch ganz viele in einem rauchigen Grau dazu, insgesamt eine schöne morbide Spätherbst- oder Wintermischung, ideal auf schwarzen Rollkragenpullis zu tragen.

An einem Tisch konnte ich das Muster nochmal überarbeiten. Es ist wirklich ratsam, sich die Perlen so zu legen, wie man sie später auffädeln möchte, vor allem wenn man eine symmetrische Kette fädeln möchte. Man empfahl mir eine dünne Edelstahlschnur um die Perlen aufzureihen und auch beim Einbinden der 2 kleineren Ketten waren mir die Ladeninhaber mit Rat und Tat behilflich.

Als es ans Bezahlen ging, war meine Überraschung groß. Ich hätte mit einem wesentlich höheren Betrag gerechnet, zumal es sich bei den Glasperlen um echtes böhmisches Glas handelt. So habe ich jetzt ein preiswertes, selbstgemachtes Weihnachtsgeschenk, dass aber auf jeden Fall sehr hochwertig und edel ausgefallen ist.

Ein Tipp für die Männer: Beschenkt doch dieses Weihnachten Eure Frauen mit selbstgemachten Colliers!!!

Contrary to my husband’s core belief, I do not leave everything until the last minute.  He just doesn’t realize how many unforeseen things come up before company arrives or a flight leaves…or even before we leave for the movie.

The simplest things that make me late are immediate: I need to turn off all burners; put all food in the refrigerator; and check to see that the automatic sprinklers are set properly.

When company is coming it’s a bit more complex.  When I make the spare bed I notice the dust bunnies under it.  (Last week I was embarrassed by NOT having noticed the dust bunnies under a chair!)  Setting out the guest towels I notice that the plants haven’t been watered.  And when I am finding the pillowcases, I may as well iron all of the spare ones so I don’t have to do it the next time.

Even dinner guests can open the Fibber McGee’s Closet of last minute tasks.  The good flatware drawer is way too disorganized and there are crumbs under the drawer liner.  Getting the serving dishes down I remember that I haven’t written a note to the kids about Great Grandmother’s sugar bowl.   I forgot that I put the tablecloth away without ironing it, (knowing that it would be wrinkled with folds when I wanted to use it).

My husband hates that last minute flurry when the mop is still in the middle of the floor when the doorbell rings.  But I can relax knowing that if anyone goes to the bathroom and looks in the guest shower they won’t find a ring under the shampoo bottle.

When I am leaving for a trip I can tear apart the entire house.  Days of critical tasks are unwieldy to fit into the last 24 hours before lift-off.

1)    When I sit at my desk to pay necessary bills there is a HUGE stack of visa receipts to be reconciled and filed.
2)    When I look for my travel hair dryer I find a storage box of travel shampoos; old Q-tips, stray hairpins and cotton balls that must be sorted and allotted to the proper places in this not-so-new-house.
3)    It is important to leave the bathroom sink clean and organize my vanity so that if the plane goes down my family doesn’t think I am totally skanky.
4)    When I find my cashmere sweater I am reminded to go to the pantry, retrieve the dried lavender and find some small mesh bags to hang in the closet for the winter.
5)    There are 2 pony packs of Irish Moss and a nectarine tree that need to be planted before I leave because it might rain while I’m gone.  Rain will give them a good start.
6)    We’re going to a dinner party tonight so I should fix one little extra thing to help the hostess.
7)    The Dia de los Muertos altar needs to be packed away.
8)    We are out of birdseed.
9)    Etc.

Oh well.  I have almost decided what to take.  I’ll find my suitcase in the garage before I leave for my walk.  I only have three appointments before the dinner party.  We don’t have to leave the house until 4:15 tomorrow morning.  And I will have gotten more done in the last two days than I have in the last two weeks.  Cool!

Maybe he can wear a sleeping mask and earplugs while I am searching for my underwear and zipping my suitcase at 3:00 a.m.

Seit ich eine fotogene Tochter habe, bekommt meine Familie auf jeden Fall zu Weihnachten immer ein Fotogeschenk. Nein, keine bedruckten T-Shirts oder Kissenbezüge, auch keine Kaffeetassen. Aber Kalender. Vielleicht auch mal ein Fotobuch, wenn ich mal Lust und Laune habe, eines zu gestalten. Oder aber einfach ein, zwei oder drei schöne Fotos in schönen Rahmen und mit Passepartout. Das sieht dann immer gleich viel besser und hochwertiger aus, als ein Foto direkt in den Rahmen gesetzt.

Jetzt habe ich meistens das Problem, wenn ich ein Foto selbst in einen Wechselrahmen stecke, dass ich zum einen gerne den stilmäßig optimalen Rahmen für mein Foto haben möchte. Nur ist das immer ein bißchen schwierig, hier verschiedene Rahmen auszuprobieren. Zum anderen bekomme ich meistens fast eine Lebenskrise, wenn ich endlich einen Rahmen gefunden habe und in diesen dann das Foto exakt platzieren möchte und das möglichst, ohne das Glas mit Fingerabdrücken zu versehen oder allzu viele Staubpartikel mit unter das Glas zu bringen.

Heute habe ich die Lösung entdeckt. Einen Foto-Abzüge-Anbieter, bei dem man außer Abzügen von den Fotos auch das ganze noch gerahmt und mit Passepartout versehen bestellen kann. Der Clou ist, dass man sein eigenes Foto direkt am Bildschirm in unterschiedlichen Rahmungen ansehen kann. Auch unterschiedliche Passepartout-Farben sind möglich. Je nach Auswahl verändert sich auch die Wirkung des Bildes.

Für mich ist das die absolut perfekte Lösung für Foto-Geschenke zu Weihnachten!
