Many people believe our world is becoming unsustainable on many fronts: ecologically, economically, and as a society. Though some people believe the events around 2012 will spell the end of the earth, others believe that the events around 2012 are an opportunity to make positive changes for themselves and for the world.

Dr. Ervin Laszlo, who has been recognized as a world leader in promoting peace and sustainable living, has recently written a book promoting positive changes as we approach 2012, and has coined the term WorldShift, which is “A worldwide shift from a path of unsustainability, conflict, and confrontation to a path toward sustainability, well-being, and peace”. His new book is called WorldShift 2012: Making Green Business, New Politics & Higher Consciousness Work Together (2009) and with it, he continues his longstanding efforts to promote positive and sustainable changes.

A recipient of the Goi Award (the Peace Prize of Japan), the International Mandir of Peace Prize in Assisi, and having been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, his work is respected worldwide for the visionary approach to the worlds problems. In 1993, he created the Club of Budapest, which is described in the forward to his new book as

“an informal international association of individuals of high ethical standard and moral integrity dedicated to developing new ways of thinking and acting to help resolve the social, political, economic, and ecological challenges of the twenty-first century.”

If you judge a person by the company they keep, Dr. Laszlo is highly respected by many accomplished people. Honorary members of his Club of Budapest include:

You can use the opportunity of the coming change to bemoan the world situation, or you can use it to try to improve things.  Many of us are not called to begin the types of initiatives which can promote real change…but all of us can get behind an initiative that improves not just our lot in life, but the world in general.  Start by reading a book…and then get involved in being the change you want to see.

The kids and I had a blast this morning making and playing with playdough.  I got the recipe from my sister, Christy.  Sailor wanted orange and Laszlo wanted green.  We had enough cream of tartar so we went for it.  After awhile of playing with the sweet smelling gooey stuff I began to put it away, but not before Laszlo noticed the left over flour on the table needed for making it. He asked that I not clean it up so he could pretend his pirates were stuck on an island covered in snow!  Love it!  This however soon turned into fast flying flour as Laszlo had the idea to help Sailor fly.  Everyone got a generous sprinkling of “pixie dust” and we were off!  Hahaha

O livro em mangá: "O Meu Marido é um Estrangeiro"

Hoje os jornais japoneses revelaram que vai ser lançado no Japão um filme baseado no mangá ダーリンは外国人 (Meu Marido é um Estrangeiro) da desenhista Saori Oguri.

Eu conheci este mangá em Outubro de 2008, enquanto eu andava pelos trens de Tóquio. Dentro deles, eu sempre ficava de olho nas pequenas telas de LCD que haviam acima das portas porque além de informações referentes as estações, ainda passavam diversos comerciais e alguns vídeos engraçados. Na programação destas tvs sempre havia uma animação feita em flash que narrava a história de uma japonesa as reviravoltas com o marido, um americano barbado e cheio de manias. Eram histórias bem curtas que narravam de forma divertida, nada mais nada menos, do que o choque cultural que a personagem Saori, uma japonesa pura, sentia em seu convívio com o marido, Tony Laszlo.

Conforme me interessava por estas histórias, eu fui descobrindo que as aventuras de Darlin wa Gaikokujin (o que estava escrito lá em cima em japonês!) não eram apenas aquelas aventuras em flash para divertir os viajantes, mas sim um livro em formato de mangá de muito sucesso publicado por uma desenhista chamada Saori Oguri. Sim, esse é o nome da autora! E o marido dela se chama Tony Laszlo mesmo! As histórias são baseadas na realidade!

O mais interessante deste título é que ele não foi criado para ser uma mega-sucesso de vendas, nem modinha e nem o próximo “Naruto” ou “Dragon Ball”, mas sim uma história de uma desenhista que resolveu mostrar em forma de comédia o que ela estava vivendo dentro de casa. E ganhou muita notoriedade e fama no Japão por ser um mangá adulto.

Depois de saber disso, eu fui correndo comprar o livro dela e descobri que na verdade são vários! Ela começou contando seus dias com Tony e logo a história da sua família ganhou nuances inesperadas, um bebê chegou! E uma série de livros sobre como cuidar de um bebê acabaram abarrotando as prateleiras sempre com os conselhos de Saori e Tony que neste momento já haviam se tornado personagens de diversas aventuras, incluindo uma que se chama “Dentro da cabeça do Tony” que fala sobre o que se passa na cabeça de um estrangeiro que vive no Japão.

Bom, mesmo invadindo um pouco da minha provacidade, eu acho que essa história vale a pena contar. A minha namorada é japonesa e se chama Saori. Não é a Saori Oguri claro porque eu não quero apanhar do Tony, mas a semelhança já foi o suficiente para que pudéssemos brincar com esse assunto. Enquanto estávamos  juntos tanto aqui no Brasil quanto no Japão, nós tivemos que aprender a conviver com as diferenças culturais que temos. E são muitas. E tenho que dizer que demorou um bocado para poder entrar num consenso entre ambas as partes. Mas, eu sinceramente acho que isso é o mais legal de ter um relacionamento com um estrangeiro: aprender a respeitar as diferenças.

E quando estávamos no trem nós assistíamos as histórias de Saori e Tony e ficávamos comparando com a nossa. E era bem interessante. Foi pensando nisso que eu fiz a ilustração aí embaixo chamada Darlin wa Burajirujin (O seu “darlin” é brasileiro), uma brincadeira com a capa do livro da Saori, onde eu redesenhei os personagens para ficarem parecendo comigo e com ela.

O livro-mangá de Darlin wa Gaikokujin já vendeu mais de 2 milhões de cópias no Japão e traz pequenas histórias com um traço simples, mas bem expressivo. O roteiro também é interessante, mas faz-se a necessidade de entender um pouco de cultura japonesa para poder “degustar” as diferenças sem estar munidos de pré-julgamento, uma palavrinha que eu inventei pra minimizar a palavra preconceito. O livro dela também foi publicado em uma pequena tiragem nos EUA com o nome de “How to Read Manga: Is he Turning Japanese?” (Como ler mangá: Ele está virando japonês?)

Enfim, eu fiquei feliz hoje ao saber que a obra da autora vai se tornar um filme de verdade no Japão. A atriz que interpretará Saori será Inoue Mao, a Makino Tsukushi da famosa novela japonesa Hana Yori Dango, enquanto Tony, o marido, será interpretado pelo ator iniciante, e estrangeiro, Jonathan Sherr. O filme deve estrear entre março e abril de 2010 e o site oficial já está no ar.

O que eu acho mais importante neste tipo de obra é que coloca em discussão muitos aspectos culturais do Japão. Fala-se tanto na sociedade japonesa como uma sociedade fechada e “fria” com as “pessoas de fora” (se você leu os posts anteriores vai entender!) que uma obra como essa se torna muito importante para a formação de toda uma nova geração de pessoas, tanto japonesas quanto estrangeiras interessadas neste país.

Hoje eu repassei no Twitter o texto da minha xará Bruna Siqueira que colocou em seu blog uma pesquisa que saiu na revista An An. A pesquisa é interessante por revelar diversos aspectos culturais que estão mudando na vida das mulheres e uma delas está relacionada a sexualidade. Vale a pena dar uma conferida, clicando aqui!

In a neighborhood known for its plethora of Latin American shops, restaurants, street food vendors, bars, and inhabitants, Laszlo chooses to represent the other side of the globe with it’s Cold War Era Communistic theme. Normally this would seem to be a little out of place and maybe even offensive, but Laszlo executes it well. They manage to play up a theme that stands out from the rest, yet it looks and feels right at place in the Mission.

The interior space plays up an “industrial chic” atmosphere, with subtle Communist style decor. It is a fairly small space, with a long bar stretching the length of the place with tables and stools on the opposite side. In the back there is a staircase that will take you to a narrow mezzanine, which also has a private VIP seating area. If you have a large party you can reserve the mezzanine for just you and your friends. Lining the walls up in the loft is artwork from local artists, and blends well with the rest of the decor. It’s a dark and intimate space that would make a nice hangout spot, if going to a raucous dive bar isn’t on your agenda for the evening.

Nestled right between the restaurants Foreign Cinema and Medjool on Mission between 21st Street and 22nd Street, Laszlo looks like a runt compared to its heavyweight neighbors on each side. In fact, I have been to both Foreign Cinema and Medjool a number of times before even realizing there was a bar between the two. Laszlo is actually attached to Foreign Cinema, and you have to go through a door in the back to use Foreign Cinema’s bathroom.

Being attached to one of San Francisco’s more popular restaurants does have its benefits. Patrons can order appetizers, including fresh oysters, from the Foreign Cinema kitchen until 9:00pm. They also have a happy hour from 6:00-9:00pm, which features $2 Trumer Pils beer and $5 Stoli drinks. With so many cheap drinks available in neary every bar around the Mission, it’s a nice change of pace to have some quality beer and vodka without breaking the bank instead of pounding the usual PBR’s and Tecate that you can find everywhere else. The other foreign beers they offer are all very affordable as well, each being only $4, except for Chimay which is $6. They also have a menu of specialty cocktails made with quality liquor and fresh ingredients for $8 each.

On nights when it isn’t too busy, Laszlo makes for a good hangout spot perfect before getting the rest of the night underway or if you have reservations at Foreign Cinema or Medjool and have some time to kill. They have DJ’s nightly that spin different styles of music, from 80’s pop to hip hop to rock and everything else. However, when the place gets packed, it gets really packed. You probably wouldn’t want to spend your entire evening here if that’s the case, and also because they don’t have a dancefloor. I don’t know about you, but if I’m drinking at one place the whole night, I’m going to need a dancefloor to get down on!

Laszlo is definitely a cool spot and the mezzanine provides a way to scope out the scene (and search for hotties down below) without looking like some creepy stalker. With it’s proximity to many other bars and restaurants, it should be a stop on your bar hopping agenda, assuming it’s not packed like a can of sardines.

Heute habe ich viel Blödsinn auf der Schreibmaschine geschrieben. So richtig arges Zeug, von Laszlo, der kein Hundefleisch mag und vom Taxifahrer, der seine Frau und die fingerdickbestrichenen Salzbutterbrote verlor, bloss weil er einen roten Damenschuh von der Strasse aufgehoben und in seiner Mappe vergessen hatte. Das will ich niemandem zumuten, darum schliesse ich hier mit einer alten Chinesischen Weisheit, die ich gerade eben erfunden habe:
