Follow my leader?

An article in the Economist newspaper, by Schumpeter, argues that “Too many chief executives are instantly forgettable. It’s the flamboyant, visionary bosses who change the world.”  I am not convinced. It’s rather a false distinction, based on extremes. It’s based on anecdote, rather than evidence. The mantra “be bold, not bland” certainly appealed to Tony Blair. But when applied to a business, like Northern Rock, at what point does boldness become recklessness?

Here are the four most common challenges I find when mentoring and working with Chief Executives and other leaders.

Situational understanding

Most leaders have developed their own style of leadership as they have progressed. That’s great, but leaders need to be able to change their style to reflect changes in circumstances and context. A participative style might be fine; but not if we need to know where the fire exit is in an emergency. It’s like a golfer needing to be able to use all the  clubs in the golf bag. 

 Awareness of self

Leaders need to be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses. I recently spoke with a leader setting up a new charity. He knew he was strong on strategy and communication, but weak on the practical operations. So he surrounded himself with strong implementers. They also need to practice what they preach. I still remember the boss who preached the virtues of open plan offices. He convinced me. Until he explained that of course, he needed his own office.

 Informal networks

The solo hero leader is out dated. New leaders build leadership teams and wide connections. Often key players don’t even appear on organisation charts. I helped a blue collar work force bid for their own jobs, against leading security companies. At first they refused to co-operate with my team. Then I identified Dave. He was the real leader, even though he was a junior security guard and wasn’t any part of the official hierarchy. Once I started working with Dave, we were able to agree the changes in working practices and culture that resulted in a winning bid.

 Lateral leadership

Leaders have to get things done. Sometimes they have little real power. Certainly they cannot know all the answers. Jim Collins, in his book ‘Great to Good’, describes a combination of personal drive and humility, as level 5, the highest level of leadership. I call this ‘lateral leadership’. It is about getting things done by persuasion, rather than by only relying on power.

Photo-Visual Literacy is a concept that describes how symbols represent words. It is based on the notion of using our vision to think and interpret what we have seen into words and ideas. Images and icons such as Microsoft Windows’ Start button are shortcuts for actions or they can be representations of a company, what their ideals are or perhaps what they offer as a good or service.

In terms of communications in the business workplace, Photo-Visual Literacy allows for communication without words. It creates fast, clear and direct shortcuts in people’s minds about what an image or icon represents. A corporate logo is a form of media that lets potential and current customers identify with the company, and understand that this company comes with a reputation and specific ideas about how to practice business.

Reproduction Literacy is taking a photo, image, idea, topic or question and changing, manipulating or upgrading it into something new. This is a way of making the original object personal to the “re-creator”.

By using Reproduction Literacy in a business setting, it lets a company take an already established idea, image, and topic and so on, and essentially paraphrase or summarize the item into something new. It allows businesses to save time, while still giving their new idea a solid foundation backed up by the original source’s reputation.

Lateral Literacy is the idea that you can go from A-Z in any order you want or in any order that is most convenient and to the point for you.

For businesses this type of literacy will make for easier and more efficient communication of ideas and location of information since you are able to jump around without being forced to go in a specific order. They are given the flexibility to chose the information needed and can be specific and to the point instead of offering too much or too generalized of information.

Information Literacy is the ability for a person to know how to decide what information is correct or reliable by looking at the source and conducting a test of it’s validity such as the CRAAP test (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose). It also allows users to filter out the bad unhelpful information from the important information due to time limitations in today’s society.

Having reliable sources helps to prevent plagiarism, fraud or general misinformation. A company could be seen as unreliable if they are acquiring their information from an unreliable source. If they then publish and reproduce this unreliable information as their own or as an expert backing up their own ideas, this will also cause the company to be viewed as unreliable.

Socio-Emotional Literacy is the need for networking, interaction, creating relationships (whether they are positive or negative) via online chat rooms, communities, forums, blogs, or wikis.

In Cynthia Cotts’ article, Thumbs up to social networks; Money saver; Corporate lawyers embrace social networks, featured in the National Post on October 21, 2009, she quotes LexisNexis as stating that “general counsel, under pressure to cut costs, are networking mainly to exchange information with peers.” This idea of social networking allows for communication between many people in similar, related or completely different fields and personal backgrounds from anywhere in the world. It lets businesses and professionals, practice and hone their communications skills by seeing how others might react to their approaches and methods. This also saves a lot of time and money for businesses, as they will no longer have the need to take business trips and instead have a video conference via tools like Skype.

Moderation and Self-Regulation Literacy is all about knowing your limit when it comes to the use of digital tools such as Facebook, Twitter and so on. It helps users learn strategies for using digital media discretion and moderation to avoid information overload or Information Fatigue Syndrome (IFS).

Employers should be careful not to give their employees and/or outside information users, too much information. They should give these users only the required or necessary information related to their needs, position or department. Businesses should also be hiring employees who are already proficient in moderation and self-regulation in order to avoid overload and fatigue.

Quality Assurance Literacy is being socially responsible and accountable for the content and quality of data and information that is published on the internet and in other digital forms.

If a business is not receiving correct, accurate information then they will not be able to provide their own correct, accurate information to clients, customers or potential investors. This lack of accurate information reflects poorly on the company’s reputation which could cause the loss of trust and respect from clients, customers and potential investors. Within the business, they want to avoid the passing of false or inaccurate information between employees, departments, and so on. By having quality assurance in a business’ operations this will make for clarity and little to no misinterpretation of information.

Juan Pablo Sorín agora entra pra um novo time: O time dos ex-jogadores. O estilo de jogo do ala esquerdo argentino vai cravar uma saudade eterna nos argentinos, na torcida cruzeirense, onde se tornou ídolo e de outros admiradores de coadjuvantes como ele.

Foram 15 anos de um futebol jogando com seriedade e com raça, e recentemente com liderança, determinantes para fazer de um lateral esquerdo um grande ídolo. Revelado pelo Argentinos Juniors de Buenos Aires, Sorín passou pelo River Plate, onde conquistou os títulos mais importantes na carreira de um argentino: Apertura, Clausura e Libertadores. Depois chegou no Cruzeiro pela primeira vez.

Posteriormente ele rumou pra Europa. Barcelona, Turim, Paris até que teve mais uma passagem por BH, onde foi marcante mais uma vez.

Sorín sempre foi o principal coadjuvante, normal para quem nem sempre é autor do gol. E sempre foi exato em desarmes, passes e lançamentos todos primorosos e com um “Q” de garra, como quem usava todas alternativas pra ver seu time balançar a rede adversária, essas foram as qualidades que o marcou como um excelente jogador. Sempre foi obstinado pela vitória, dono de futebol ao mesmo tempo muito técnico. Seu pensamento sempre foi o amparo a equipe, ignorando o individualismo. Por onde jogou sempre foi o coração do time. Prova disto quando ao lado de Riquelme e Forlan, levou o Villarreal às semifinais da Liga dos Campeões e também quando foi peça principal na articulação e criação de jogadas vestindo a camisa da Seleção Argentina na campanha da Copa de 2006. Naquela oportunidade, o canhoto foi capitão.

Embora ter conquistados títulos mais importantes da sua carreira com o River e ter assumido funções importantes na Argentina, jogando três copas do mundo, o time mineiro é o que Sorín mais se identificou e o carinho é recíproco, tanto a torcida da Raposa, quanto o clube fizeram do lateral uma figura emblemática, um ídolo da história recente, que chega a dar mais orgulho que qualquer outro jogador uma relação transcendental por todos os fatos heróicos de Sorín com a camisa azul.

O respeito que o jogador conquistou é explicado em alguns episódios. Como quando arrancou aplausos no Mineirão, mesmo atuando com a camisa da Argentina e fazendo gol contra o Brasil. O sentimento é explicado também quando agora aposentado, o ex-jogador não deixa o Brasil, mesmo depois de ter passado pelo primeiro mundo. Sua diferença talvez seja que com a constelação do Cruzeiro do Sul no peito ele foi mais do que um jogador, foi também um torcedor e nunca será um exagero chamá-lo de creaque.

Consciente de suas limitações físicas, depois de ficar quase oito meses afastado dos gramados se recuperando de uma cirurgia no joelho esquerdo, o lateral Fernandinho, do Cruzeiro, admitiu não ter chance de lutar pela titularidade no time mineiro nesta temporada.

“Não estou nem pensando nisso, em brigar por posição no meio ou na lateral. O mais importante pra mim, agora, é continuar treinando bem, entrar nos jogos, para acabar esse ano sem contusão, sem sentir a cirurgia”, afirmou.

Fernandinho assume que, no momento, não está apto a lutar pela posição com Diego Renan na lateral ou até mesmo no meio com Gilberto ou Leandro Lima. “Nem tenho condição de jogar 90 minutos. Até fiquei surpreso de jogar quase um tempo contra o Botafogo”, afirmou o jogador, sobre a partida que marcou seu retorno ao time.

Para Fernandinho, as prioridades são ganhar ritmo de jogo, readquirir confiança no joelho operado e contribuir para a classificação do time à Copa Libertadores de 2010. “Aí sim, depois de uma boa pré-temporada, pretendo reconquistar o meu espaço”, concluiu o jogador.
