Seriously lots of tips on how documents should be coded in LaTeX.  I’m going to have to read this from top to bottom sometime soon.

In LaTeX, as in any programming language, it is useful to write comments.

In order to write a line comment, use the per.cent sign (%), and anything you write after it wouldn’t be taken in account by the compiler.

If you want to comment a large number of adjacent lines, use the environment comment

I will be busy doing schoolwork the next few weeks: my Statistical Consulting class will have a “consultation memo” due Monday, which is simply a short summary of an actual statistical consult we students sat in on this past Monday. And on Tuesday I have to give a presentation for my Case Studies in Bioinformatics class. There are only two students in this class, and each of us needs to present an analysis of some 2D protein gel electrophoresis data.

There will be a few more hurdles, but I am rapidly approaching the end of my studies in the Master’s program. On Monday, I will be one of the designated two “head students” for the consult; as we sit in on an actual statistical consultation another student and I will sit closest to the consultation, and each of us will be responsible for giving a short presentation on the consultation the following Thursday.

On December 8, I need to give a presentation discussing/critiquing this paper; the teacher (who happens to be the head of the department) also requires a 3-5 page write-up. And December 14 is the deadline for a take-home exam for the Consulting class.

And of course there’s the big T. (Working title: Non-negative Matrix Factorization: Assessing Methods for Normalization and for Estimating the Number of Components.) In about a week, I must submit an advance copy of my thesis to my thesis committee; this means that the document must be in a presentable form by that time. (Not to worry, I think everything is falling into place.) Because of a departmental requirement, I have written my thesis in LaTeX. And on December 10, I need to defend the thesis, which means I need to compose a PowerPoint presentation for that day.

Whew! It seems like a lot. But I’m really coming into the home stretch here.

It took me a while to find out, how to get the width of a word in LaTeX, so I share my code with you:

Currently, I am organising our 5th year school reunion. As my friends and me could not reach some people in the Internet, I thought, maybe I should invite them using this old-fashioned dead-tree-letter-thing (one of the greatest paradoxes for me is the fact, that we still have no paperless office). I had the choice between copying the names and addresses from an excel file into a LaTeX file by hand and then run LaTeX for each person. But is this the computer scientist way to do this? No! Of course, the computer scientist writes a script that solves the whole problem class. Of course, the CS student would use Python for this task and write the whole LaTeX code with variables for the changing parts in different files. However, the bioinformatician telling you this story was so involved in R and Sweave during his last lab course, that he totally forgot about his preference of Python. This is a shame because Sweave scripts here are a total overkill and are terrible to debug in general.

When R says: "With confidence of 95% I can give you anything you want in a very stylish and compact way, iff you know the exact function name and are willing to read the documentation of all my 1000 flags.".
Then Python responds: "I also have much to offer to you. Might be a few lines more code, but it will be fun to write it and you find every problem solved in the Internet."
I definitely prefer the latter one.

Sweave can be an extremely useful tool for creating dynamic content in a LaTeX file. It was created by LMU professor F. Leisch. One way to use Sweave is to embed your R code in a LaTeX file with

in it and the file extension .Snw. Your R code is embedded with these the following mark-up:

Here, OPTION can be empty, then Sweave returns the output of R (which is useful, when you worked with a dataset and want to trace later, what you have done). With echo=F, you suppress all output. This is useful, if you want to have a chunk, that solely does some computation. What we want for our letter writing is something like that:

The code above is an excerpt of such a sweaved letter. Note that we print out the LaTeX code and that we need to escape the backslashes.

Wrapping the script. When you want a Sweave file to be more generic, you need to do something a bit ugly: wrap it into an R script (see my example script) that iterates over lists or an xls/csv table and sets the variables for your Sweave script properly and with Sweave(file) you sweave the template, which creates the .tex file on which you run pdflatex (which should also be automated when you send many letters). It should really be easier to do this in Python, but if you know R better than Python or want to send individually faked statistic figures, then this should be the modus operandi.

Das stimmt natürlich so nicht ganz, der Spruch “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” bezieht sich nicht auf LaTeX .. sondern auf die verfügbaren Editoren für LaTeX. Es ist auch nicht das Aussehen das damit gemeint ist sondern der Funktionsumfang, der von einfach (Good) bis Extrem Komplex (Ugly) geht. Was LaTeX ist, kann man hier auf der Wikipedia nachlesen.

Eins sei aber zur Erklärung gesagt: Textverarbeitung trägt den Namen deswegen, weil man den Text Verarbeiten kann. OpenOffice, Microsoft Office und Co. sind der Definition nach eher Text Editoren. Mann kann Text erstellen  und bearbeiten aber nur beschränkt Verabeiten.

Text-Verarbeitung ist ein Prozess, der über einen Editor und gleichzeitig aber auch durch externe Programme und Funktionen möglich ist. Inhalte können auch ohne Editor erzeugt, bearbeitet und beliebig verändert werden. Wir setzen in der Firma LaTeX dann ein, wenn Automatische Systeme eine Rolle spielen z.B. das Erzeugen von PDF Dokumenten oder erzeugen ganzer Dokumente aus Programmen heraus.

Es gibt eben auch für LaTeX Editoren, die einem die Arbeit erleichtern. Der Funktionsumfang der gebräuchlichsten (kostenlosen) Editoren ist dabei sehr unterschiedlich und reich von eher einfach und Übersichtlich bis Hilfe das gibt es aber viel.

Zu einer der einfachen Editoren gehört sicherlich Texmarker, der recht übersichtlich ist und schon viele Sonderfunktionen mitbringt.

Das TeXnicCenter bietet da schon mehr Funktionen ist eigentlich auch mein Lieblingsprogramm.

Mann kann natürlich noch einen Schritt weiter gehen. LEd (LatexEditor) ist Ein Programm für Spezialisten oder für diejenigen, die das geschriebene sofort sehen wollen.

Es gibt nicht nur die 3 vorgestellten Editoren sonder noch eine ganze Reihe mehr.

If your doing a presentation in LaTeX using the beamer class, a nice feature of it is that you may add a background picture to your PDF file in both, a global or individual way.

Global Setting of Background:

In the preamble of your TEX file write the command
\usebackgroundtemplate{\includegraphics[width=\paperwidth,height=\paperheight]{<file_name>}

Remember that: if your image file is not in the same folder than your TEX file, but in a sub folder you must give the sub-folder address as well.

Individual Setting of Background:

For a individual setting, write the same line as above just before the \begin{frame} command of the frame you want to edit, and then wrap it all with braces.

so having looked about SL for quite somtime now i see lots of hoods, the latex skin kind not the sealed in isolation prim kind and started wandering if i could make one, and not cost me a lot of money and also i have an another motive for making my own hood (as soon as my training is over i’ll tell you what it is ^^) so anyway there are a few sites out there that offer full perm SL skin texture maps for download, they come in (.PSD) format which means you can view each layer in paint shop, photo shop and i am told they also work in GIMP. the links for the skins are below, and they are fantastic and full perms the designer even suggest uploading them to SL and givein them away free, so please any acusations of them being stolen i suggest you go to this site first before you make a total arse out of yourself ^^.

its also a skin tutortial there and really helpfull for any one interested in making skins, also a couple of links to some other skin packs that are again “FULL PERMS”

this hood uses on of the skins from teh pack as a base for the hood, i have slightly modded it to my own needs, just  little bit of fiddling with make up and tones, that sort of thing.

ok so i started off with the skin base and added a solid black layer in paint shop pro (PSP), i then used the linden skin limits texture maps to get things lined up prooperly, i cut a couple of eye holes, nose holes and a mouth hole added a few outer rings to the edges of the holes that where cut out

see the pics for the finished hood first one is a fornt face shot, showing off the holes a little bit better

next is a closer shot from the left hand side

highlights took ages to do and still learning a lot about making them look ok, i have removed the Linden eye lashes as they look pretty horrible to be honest, i use lashes from either JS or redgrave, the redgrave ones come free with skins anyway.

next to follow will be the same hood but  with a male skin,,,,,,,,,just need to find a volunteer to model it for me heheh

seeing as i know have teh hood skin saved as a .PSD file i can add it realy quickly to a face base skin and yes the site i mentioned in the start of the post does have some male skins so i think i might experiment a little with them in future
