The purchasing power of Hispanics is growing at a rate nearly three times as fast as that of the general population in Arizona and nationwide, said an Arizona State University business expert who has studied the market for 14 years.

Even though Hispanic spending is slowing because of the downturn in the economy, overall, it continues to grow because the number of Hispanics is rising and they are rapidly approaching a majority status in many parts of the country, said Loui Olivas, professor emeritus at ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

“Yes, the Hispanic population has been impacted by the recession, so their spending is down,” he said. “However, the purchasing power of Latinos continues to grow.”

Olivas is releasing the 14th annual “Datos 2009: Focus on Arizona’s Hispanic Market” report at the Datos breakfast today. The event is presented by the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Salt River Project.

A third-generation native Phoenix resident, Olivas leads a group of graduate students who study the Hispanic market.

He estimates that Hispanic purchases reached $31 billion in Arizona last year compared with $28 billion the year before.Olivas forecasts that it will reach $48 billion in four years.

The 2007 and 2008 numbers come from an examination of tax returns of taxpayers who self-identified as Hispanics. They do not include what undocumented immigrants spend because there is no way to track that, he said.

Arizona ranks fourth among all states for its Latino consumer market.

Hispanics accounted for about 16 percent of purchases in Arizona last year, compared with 8.9 percent nationwide.

They now control $951 billion in spending power in the nation, and Olivas expects that to reach $1 trillion this year or next.

Because of cultural preferences, Hispanics lead the nation in some types of purchases, and they are embracing technology, the report indicates.

“Hispanics are more likely than White non-Hispanics to buy the latest phones, upgrade them faster and use special features,” the report said.

Hispanic adults ages 18 to 34 use an average of 1,200 cellphone minutes a month, compared with 950 minutes for the general population. Forty percent have profiles on sites such as MySpace, Facebook or MiGente.

Fifty percent of Latinos in the country are online, although bilingual Latinos are more likely to use the Internet than those who speak only Spanish.

Compared with the general population, they are also more likely to buy soft drinks, particularly Fanta, and clothing.

Scarborough Research, which is cited in the ASU report, said Hispanics are more likely to buy audio-video equipment at Kmart, clothing at Burlington Coat Factory and insurance on the Internet than the general population.

There are more than 2 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S., the Datos report said. In Arizona, almost two out of every five Hispanic-owned businesses is a sole proprietorship and 67 percent are family owned.

More than a third of Arizona’s Hispanic-owned businesses have annual revenue exceeding $500,000, and the median household income among those business owners is $76,400.

They not only cater to Hispanics but contribute to the state’s culture. Tradiciones, for example, is a restaurant east of downtown Phoenix that attracts an ethnically diverse crowd and caters to downtown-office workers as well as convention-center visitors, said Roman Barretero, general manager and chef.

He has felt the recession pinch but said business has picked up lately, with sales on certain days almost double where they had been.

“I think the economy is changing already,” Barretero said, citing better service and food as additional factors explaining the restaurant’s improvement.

The main reason Latino buying power is growing is the group’s rapid growth. It is projected that Hispanics will soon cease to be a minority.

“We will have to redefine minority,” Olivas said. “For the first time, when you look at the top 10 U.S. cities, they are either majority (at least 51 percent) or very near majority Latina. That will continue to fuel those cities’ economies. And, eventually, the top 15 and the top 20 will be all majority Latina.”

He said those include New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix and Philadelphia.

Overall, minorities now account for 34 percent of the U.S. population, compared with 25 percent in 1990, and 52 percent of that growth has been Hispanics.

Arizona ranks fourth among all the states for the largest percentage of Hispanics, with 1.9 million, or 30 percent, in 2007, the Datos report said.

One of the most dramatic numbers in Arizona is that Hispanics accounted for 86 percent of total growth in school enrollment from 1998 to 2008.

Olivas said that contributes to the state’s economy because it supports teacher and other educational jobs.

Aware of this growing clout, the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for the first time is forming a panel to issue policy recommendations to business and political leaders in January as an expansion of the Datos report.

The group of 15 will include people with expertise in social services, banking, real estate, technology, health care and other areas.

James Garcia, a spokesman for the chamber, said, “As you meet at the Legislature, as big business starts to conjure up what it’s going to do in this economy, these are the kinds of things we would like you to take into account as to the impact of the Latino community and how we think they would benefit or be harmed by these trends.”

Latin Boys World

As is appropriate this week, I would like to give thanks. But rather than go on about the myriad things that I’m thankful for in my personal life, let me point out two recent news items that fill me with gratitude.

First, I’m happy that Hispanics continue to make progress in America. What’s the latest indicator that we’re moving on up? Well, for the first time in the 130-year history of the American Bar Association, a Latino will lead the organization.

Stephen Zack, who is Cuban-American, recently became president-elect of the top lawyers’ association in America. Zack says that his focus will be on civil rights, civic education, and (yikes!) immigration law. In honor of Zack’s achievement, I promise to lay off the lawyer jokes for a while… well, at least until the end of this post.

Another news story this week made me grateful in a different way. It made me thankful that I don’t live among idiots.

In my former hometown of New York City, a couple are suing the co-op board of their ritzy apartment building. The couple claims that the woman, a model, angered her fellow residents when she married the building’s former doorman. That may have been an unforgivable breach of class protocol, but according to the suit, what really set off the neighbors was that it meant “a Hispanic former porter” would be their peer.

Now I don’t know if the suit is valid, but the neighbors’ reaction certainly sounds suspicious. At the very least, you would think people would be happy with the news.

After all, it’s just a matter of time before some Hollywood producer swoops in and buys the rights to this cross-gender “Maid in Manhattan” fantasy and gives it a role-reversal “Pretty Woman” treatment (without the prostitution). That would make the building famous, and the people who live there would be celebrities by default. But apparently, they can’t let it go, because the guy is Latino.

Yes, it was quite a week to be grateful to be Hispanic.

Eduardo, a Cuban-American born in Miami, Florida, attended Loyola University, New Orleans earning a bachelor’s degree in Finance as well as in Computer Information Systems. While working full time, he subsequently received his Executive MBA in 2007 from the University of Miami, where he was the recipient of the Recognized Student of the Year Award.

Eduardo has worked in the services industry since 1996, managing multi-million dollar enterprise technology projects and business continuity strategies. He currently works at Uber Operations, a leading health care technology company in Tallahassee, Florida. At Uber Operations, among other projects Eduardo has had the opportunity to work with the Florida Department of Health and the Texas Department of State Health Services on a CDC sponsored project for Pandemic Influenza information exchange preparedness. Eduardo is the Managing Director of Uber Operations and plays a key role in the continued development of the company’s strategic growth, including partnership and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility and growth in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

Eduardo is a big believer in volunteerism and helping others. In this vein, he has participated in two missionary trips to the Dominican Republic where medical assistance was offered and medicines distributed.

He is fluent in English, Spanish, has a working knowledge of Portuguese, and has traveled on business to over 15 countries. Eduardo is the President of the Florida chapter of Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association, in addition to a member of the Board of Directors leading the government affairs division. He is a member of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, The Project Management Institute, The Tallahassee Latino Professional Association and the President of the University of Miami Alumni Club in Tallahassee. He is also a Kiwanis George F. Hixson Lifetime Award fellow.

Se llevaron a cabo ayer 22 de Noviembre en Los Angeles Ca, el show debo de decir que estubo muy interesante muchas cosas que me gustaron, muchos performance en vivo De Janet Jackson,  Alicia keys con Jay Z cantando el nuevo sencillo de Jay Z “Empire state of mind”, Lady Gaga con un show bastente intenso desde sus canciones, pero sobretodo dió de que hablar con su vestuario luminoso, los BEP con “Meet Me Halfway” y “Boom Boom Pow”, Jennifer Lopez presentando su sencillo “Loboutines” donde la pobresilla se cayó en la coreografía pero no paso nada en si, como buena bailarina se paro inmediatamente y continuo bailando; definitivamente para  Whitney Houston y Michael Jackson fué su noche, al desaparecido MJ ganó dos premios , los recibio en su honor su hermano Jermanie Jackson, y mi favorita de todo el show fue Whitney Houston quien hizo llorar a los presentes con su presentación muy emotiva, bien por ella que regreso con el pie derecho a los escenarios.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

• As Latinos fight to keep their head above water in the lagging economy, more are joining the U.S. Army. Although enlistment bonuses and military pay are welcome, the lure of a higher education has proven to be a strong incentive.
• A study by the RAND Corporation found that Latino young adults are most responsive to the military’s educational benefits, whereas black Army applicants respond most to salary and bonus incentives, and whites to military pay (CNN.com 10.21.09).
• According to the study, the percentage of Army recruits who were Latino rose from 6.6% in 1994 to 11.4% in 2007.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

• Steady pay, job training and the opportunity to serve their country is helping to increase military recruitment among young adults overall. But for Latinos, the promise of higher education is a bonus that’s most attractive.
• Companies that are hiring can look to Latino military veterans who’ve taken advantage of educational benefits.

As we all know and celebrated Lou Dobbs has resigned from CNN. This is a victory for the Latino community in many ways. A nation of people has spoken with voices so loud there was not much of a choice. But Latinos, this fight is not over and much work has to be done to correct the wrongs of those who use their power and fortune for the sake of hatred towards Latinos, Africans, Asians, any group considered “minority” in America. Let me be clear to groups such as FAIR (Federation for American Immigration reform) and The Minutemen Civil Defense Corps. The reason for wanting Lou Dobbs out is not because he was against illegal immigration, but his moronic views on the Latino community as a whole. There is no justification for reporting invalid facts on air, later to be found proven wrong, and never give a sincere apology to the Latino community. No problem Dobbs, we will take your resignation instead.

Within the last few days my brain has been on overload taking in information from every side of different arguments. I was reading a few blogs and came across one, blew my mind away. It is amazing how many claim to be non-violent and pro this and pro that but all I see is pro-hate. Those words are used to replace the common words we all know and have spoken against. There is a question that wonders my mind so. How can an “expert” writer fault groups such as The National Council of La Raza and the Sothern Poverty Law Center as provokers of violence when FAIR has singled out the Latino community as criminals, disease carriers and have hired many anti-Latino activists. Again, let me be clear, I am not against anyone who is against illegal immigration but when groups such as FAIR “campaign” against immigration legal and/or illegal, it makes the mind think what is the real agenda behind FAIR’s “campaign.”

The agenda behind any one person or group of persons lobbying against a single group of individuals, in this case, is fear. Fear of the growing population of Latinos in America, 46.9 million according to the Census Bureau on July 1st 2008. Fear that many are blending our culture with American culture. Fear of the Latino economical market of growth in the billions predicted to see trillions according to, HispanTelligence, “The U.S. Hispanic Economy in Transition.” Tamara Monosoff , (hats off to you Tamara),stated in her article “Embrace the Hispanic Market,””If there is any word that describes the Hispanic market in the U.S. it is “growth”.” We have the opportunities, finances, the power as a collective to protest such groups from targeting us and have them banned from any influence in congress. We are not powerless, we are not alone and most importantly we are not leaving. So I say to those who concoct lies for example, Lou Dobbs, Rush Limbaugh and Mark Krikorian, and the many others who follow them to take a good look at the future. It is not the Latino community that is destroying the economy. It is people like you who run around the capital lobbying and manipulating congress to work on reforming immigration for control over our people and our tax dollars. America will never “outgrow” immigration; it is a part of what makes this country so unique from the rest of the world.

Book review: ‘Becoming Americans’

This ambitious anthology brings together 85 writings by American immigrants from 45 countries. Arranged chronologically, the letters, stories, articles and poems extend from 1623 to the present.

The earliest ones, by Phyllis Wheatley, John James Audubon and St. John Crèvecoeur, often have a schoolbook feel, like a reading assignment for an American history class from primary sources. Later pieces, by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Frank McCourt, Edwidge Danticat, Jhumpa Lahiri and Junot Díaz showcase some of the liveliest writing of our time.

Ilan Stavans, a professor of Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College and a frequent editor of anthologies, made the selections for this hefty volume. They include a revealing autobiographical essay by Stavans, a Polish-Ukrainian Jew born in Mexico City. He describes the moment when he first knew his identity: “I would perfect my English and thus become a New York Jew, an intellectual animal … In just a single moment I understood who I could be.”

Many of the writers deal with issues of identity, too. Not so many see the answer as clearly as Stavans or pursue it as effectively.

The Norwegian novelist O.E. Rolvaag (1876-1931) describes the alienation that sets in when one loses his Fatherland, “for it can never be regained,” and “neither can you get another in its place, no matter what you do.”

Julia Alvarez, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, writes in “Something to Declare” about this pain of loss of place. “For weeks that soon became months and years, I would think … What was going on right this moment back home?”

Other immigrant writers repeatedly address the need to reinvent one’s self, so as to fit the new land. In a selection from Henry Roth’s classic 1934 novel Call It Sleep, a husband from Ukraine finds his wife and child an embarrassment when they finally join him in New York. Life here for him had been a disappointment – and he was angry at everyone.

A much earlier writer, Gottlieb Mittelberger (1715-79), a German, had suggested that his countrymen who came to America believing that “roasted pigeons are going to fly into their mouths without their having to work for them” were fools.

Anzia Yezierska (1885-1970) from Belarus shows in a short story from Children of Loneliness how the younger generation assimilates more readily than its progenitors, producing terrible tensions within a family. In the end, the daughter slams the door in her mother’s face and tells herself: “I owe them nothing, nothing, nothing.” (Sound familiar? Clearly she has assimilated as an American teenager.)

Sometimes children assimilate, but parents cannot follow. In “Dying in a Strange Country,” Tahira Naqvi, a Pakistani-American born in 1952, tells the touching story of an aged mother who reluctantly visits her grown son in Connecticut but desperately fears she will die while outside her native land.

Eva Hoffman, who emigrated from Poland to Canada with her parents and earned a scholarship to Rice University, discusses in an essay how language shapes her perceptions and enlarges her identity.

Becoming Americans leaves out American Indians, who were already here, and gives only moderate attention to Mexican-Americans, despite their growing role in this country. The book is not an attempt to represent evenly every immigrant group. Rather, Stavans showcases good writing that shows how individuals, famous or obscure, felt coming to America, working to fit in.

OK, I have a few technical details to address here.

First, you may have noticed that I redid the right-hand column of this blog. It better reflects my status as a multitasking, cutting-edge Latino who is always plugged into the zeitgest of a hectic, speed-of-light society.

By that, I mean I have finally signed up for Twitter. My tweets will appear on this blog, but it would be grand if you clicked on the supplied link to sign up as a follower of Hispanfan. I will, of course, reciprocate.

The second change to the column is that I have finally gotten around to adding a search function. So now, if you’re looking for a post I wrote about, say, artichokes, you can go directly to it (by the way, I never wrote a post about artichokes).

Finally, I’m pleased to announce that WordPress has taken care of a nagging bug that has afflicted my site for a while. As such, I finally have a Share Button on the site. So now if a post amuses, intrigues, or infuriates you, you can click the button and send it to StumbleUpon, Delicious, or myriad other social-networking sites. Feel free to do this as often as you can, as that will accelerate the day when the Fanatic has as much media saturation as the cast of “New Moon.”

Neanche questo è un post politico: per base intendo infatti il verbo che ha dato vita al suo participio presente e che poi è scomparso.

Il verbo, non il participio presente. Le persone continuano così a usare la voce di un verbo che non esiste più. E perché questa voce non è scomparsa assieme al verbo? Perché in italiano i participi (sia presenti che passati) vengono utilizzati spessissimo con valore nominale, come se fossero quindi un aggettivo o un sostantivo.

Capita così che verbi latini, francesi, o semplicemente desueti, abbiano dato origine in italiano a participi presenti che si sono conservati e tuttora vengono usati come sostantivi o aggettivi.
Vi faccio qui un elenco degli esempi più simpatici:

• aitante, “di bell’aspetto, robusto e vigoroso”  (italiano antico aitàre, ‘aiutare’)
• ambiente, “il luogo in cui viviamo e che ci condiziona” (latino ambīre, ’stare intorno’)
• ambulante, “venditore che si sposta di casa in casa o di mercato o mercato” (latino ambulāre, ‘camminare’)
• assente, “colui che non è presente, che è lontano” (latino ăbēsse, ‘allontanarsi’)
• balbuziente, “persona che balbetta” (latino balbutīre, ‘balbettare’)
• belligerante, “in stato di guerra” (latino belligerāre, ‘fare una guerra’)
• birbante, “persona disonesta e cattiva” (latino volgare birbare, ‘mendicare, elemosinare’, a sua volta dal francese bribe, ‘tozzo di pane dato in elemosina’)
• cangiante, “ciò che assume colori diversi a seconda di come viene colpito dalla luce” (italiano antico cangiare, ‘cambiare’)
• capiente, “in grado di contenere molto” (latino capĕre, ‘contenere’)
• carente, “scarsamente provvisto di qualcosa” (latino carēre, ‘essere privo’)
• coerente, “privo di contraddizioni al suo interno oppure rispetto all’ambiente in cui è inserito” (latino coharēre, ‘essere unito’)
• connivente, “tacitamente consenziente a qualcosa di non buono” (latino connivēre, ‘chiudere gli occhi’)
• consulente, “professionista che fornisce a pagamento consigli e delucidazioni a proposito di una materia” (latino consŭlere, ‘consultare’)
• deficiente, “stupido” (latino defĭcere, ‘mancare’)
• deterrente, “tanto temibile da dissuadere dall’attacco qualsiasi avversario (detto di arma)” (latino deterrēre, ‘distogliere’)
• discente, “studente” (latino dĭscere, ‘imparare’)
• dissidente, “persona in disaccordo con il gruppo (spesso politico) di cui fa parte” (latino dissidēre, ‘essere in disaccordo’)
• docente, “insegnante” (latino docēre, ‘insegnare’)
• eclatante, “evidente, manifesto; anche impressionante” (francese éclater, ’scoppiare’)
• efficiente, “in grado di produrre l’effetto desiderato” (latino effĭcere, ‘compiere’)
• elegante, “fine, grazioso, non artificioso” (latino elĭgere, ’scegliere’)
• eloquente, “significativo; anche: chi esprime chiaramente il proprio punto di vista” (latino ēloqui, ‘esprimersi in modo appropriato’)
• eminente, “eccellente, meritevole” (latino eminēre, ’sovrastare’)
• esercente, “negoziante” (italiano poco usato esercire, ‘condurre un’attività’)
• fatiscente, “cadente, in rovina” (latino fatīsci, ‘creparsi’)
• furfante, “persona disonesta e cattiva” (italiano raro furfare, a sua volta dal francese antico forfaire, ‘agire al di fuori (della legge)’)
• galante, “che sfoggia gentilezza e buone maniere nei rapporti con altri, soprattutto con donne” (francese galer, ‘divertirsi’)
• gestante, “donna incinta” (latino gestāre, ‘compiere’)
• imminente, “prossimo nel tempo, pronto a compiersi” (latino imminēre, ‘incombere’)
• ingrediente, “elemento che rientra nella composizione di un alimento, una medicina o più in generale di qualcosa” (latino ĭngredi, ‘entrare’)
• intelligente, “intellettualmente dotato” (latino intellĕgere, ‘capire’)
• lampante, “estremamente evidente” (italiano poco usato lampare, ‘lampeggiare’)
• latente, “nascosto, non manifesto” (latino latēre, ’stare nascosto’)
• mittente, “chi spedisce qualcosa per posta o per ferrovia” (latino mittĕre, ‘mandare’)
• negligente, “privo di zelo e svogliato” (italiano raro negligere, ‘trascurare’)
• occidente, “ovest, ponente” (latino occĭdere, ‘cadere’ (detto del sole))
• oriente, “est, levante” (latino orĭri, ‘nascere’ (detto del sole))
• pimpante, “vivace e baldanzoso; anche: sgargiante, vistoso” (francese pimpere, ’sedurre’)
• prestante, “di bell’aspetto e robusto” (latino praestāre, ‘ essere superiore’)
• prudente, “cauto, non sconsiderato” (latino providēre, ‘prevedere, provvedere’)
• recipiente, “contenitore, vaso per liquidi” (latino recĭpere, ‘prendere, contenere’)
• reticente, “riservato, che non fa affermazioni esplicite” (latino reticēre, ‘tacere’)
• rovente, “surriscaldato; anche appassionato, veemente” (latino rubēre, ‘essere rosso’)
• solvente, “liquido che prevale in una soluzione” (italiano antico solvere, ’sciogliere’)
• stravagante, “originale, eccentrico, al di fuori delle consuetudini” (latino medievale extra, ‘fuori’ e vagari, ‘vagare’)
• tornante, “curva a gomito, tipica soprattutto in montagna” (francese tourner, ‘girare’)
• utente, “persona che fa uso di un bene o di un servizio pubblici” (latino ūti, ‘usare’)
• vacante, “privo di titolare o proprietario” (italiano raro vacare, ‘essere vuoto’)
• vigente, “in vigore e ancora valido (detto di legge)” (italiano raro vigere, ‘essere in vigore’)

Dzul's 'Smiley'

Yesterday I went and got my very first tattoo at Dzul’s Tattoo Shop in White Center.  It was a very enjoyable experience as well as an expensive one!  I had brought in an image and had it modified a little bit to my liking.  For the longest, I was consumed with fear of the tattooing process, you know the needles, but it honestly did not hurt that much, if not any.  There is the initial shock of the needle first touching your skin, but then you get used to it and pretty much forget about the sensation.  The whole 90 minutes it took to do it seemed like 45 minutes.  Time goes by much faster when your friends are in the same room keeping you company, as well as having a conversation with Smiley helped too.  If you are ever in need of some ink, be sure to check these guys out, it’s a family owned and operated business in the heart of the Hispanic community.  I already have my next tattoo planned out, in the meantime, will try to upload some pics of the first one on here soon!
