If you’re anything like me (and since you’re reading this post, you probably are), you do one of two things upon booting-up your computer: 1) Open your browser, or 2) open your e-mail client – if it’s not your browser. Being online / networked is pretty much a necessary part of computing. If you don’t believe me, just unplug your network cable, and turn off your WiFi. I can assure you the experience won’t be very satisfying.

There’s one company that gets it, and as far as I’m concerned, is leading the movement to Software As A Service (SaaS) for the general internet user: Google. I’m still really new to using a lot of Google’s services and applications outside of Search, but here’s what I can tell you so far. These services are easy to setup, they’re pervasive, and they simply work. You hearing this, Microsoft? My Google odyssey began with my reading of Six Pixel’s Of Separation by Mitch Joel. In his book, Mitch writes about personal branding, and being able to leverage Web 2.0 services to grow your personal (and your business’) brand. The first step to doing this is to be aware of what people are saying about you or your business online. Here’s what I did…

Setup a Gmail account: Even if you have an existing e-mail account, or two or three. The gmail account is the account name that will be employed to utilize many of Google’s services. Don’t forget to review all your contacts to see if any of them have gmail accounts. If so, invite them as friends.

Setup Google Alerts: It’s important to know what people are saying about you and where. With the Google Alerts service, you can literally have Google notify you (on a frequency you determine), when your name is mentioned… pretty much anywhere on the internet. You can also setup notifications for other important words or phrases, like the title of your blog, or important events, etc. You can obviously configure the Alerts to go to your newly created Gmail account.

Checkout iGoogle: This will replace your typical ‘Classic View’ Google search page. It has all sorts of applets and widgets that you can configure based on your preferences. Basically, tailoring the Google page to your own personal preferences. Note: it may take a little longer to load the page than before, so you will have to judge if it’s worth it.

Gotta Go Mobile: Google maps is really a more robust application than most other mapping software for your GPS-enabled smartphone. Also, if you’re building your network of Gmail friends, you can configure Latitude to track whether any of them are in your general area at a given time. It’s actually kind of cool.

Register your blog (if you have one): with Google Blog Search, although that’s the one service that I have not gotten to work correctly yet for this blog! If there’s anyone with suggestions out there, please let me know…

Google obviously dominates internet Search, and has for years, but they are really getting into cloud services surrounding personal productivity. Even more recently, hitting enterprise customers with some impressive results. The best part is that (right now) all these services are free, and they are actively innovating these solutions. Stay tuned for a post on Google Wave!

We love Pete Cashmore’s insight into the future landscape of social media.

Next year’s Twitter? It’s Foursquare

By Pete Cashmore, Special to CNN, November 19, 2009 1:18 p.m. EST

Editor’s note: Pete Cashmore is founder and CEO of Mashable, a popular blog about social media. He is writing a weekly column about social networking and tech for CNN.com.

London, England (CNN) — As 2009 draws to a close, with Twitter undoubtedly this year’s media darling and Facebook continuing on its path to global domination, you may wonder which social-media service will become tech’s poster boy in 2010.

Among the Web’s early adopter set, the answer is nearly unanimous: Foursquare.

While the technology landscape is ever-changing, I’d argue that Foursquare already has aligned itself to become next year’s mainstream hit.

The Twitter connection

Birthed by the team that brought us the mobile social network Dodgeball (acquired by Google in 2005 and later shuttered), the location-based mobile startup serves a simple purpose: It lets an individual share his or her location with a group of friends.

Foursquare ventures beyond utility, however: It’s a virtual game in which participants earn badges for checking in at various locations; those that check in most become a venue’s “mayor.” By all accounts, this mechanism is as addictive as Twitter, Facebook or checking your e-mail on a BlackBerry.

Originally launched as an iPhone application and seeded by the young early-adopter set in cities such as New York and San Francisco, the site’s founders were able to leap from a ready-made springboard: Twitter.

With users’ “check-ins” being posted to the messaging service, Foursquare was able to gain a foothold in much the same way YouTube built its lead from videos embedded in MySpace pages.

The parallels with Twitter are numerous. As technology early adopter and popular blogger Robert Scoble wrote in September: “Go back three years ago. Twitter was being used by the same crowd that is playing with Foursquare today.”

The similarities don’t stop there: Twitter first took hold at Austin’s South By Southwest festival in 2007; Foursquare made its debut at SXSW 2009. Members of both founding teams have previously built successful social startups; both those startups were sold to Google.

The two companies share investors, too: Union Square Ventures is a backer, while Twitter inventor Jack Dorsey made an angel investment in Foursquare. Other notable investors include the founders of Digg and Delicious, and famed angel investor Ron Conway. Union Square Ventures’ Fred Wilson observed that Foursquare’s first round financing was “among the most competitive early round financings I’ve seen in a long time.”

Foursquare’s power play: Platform for developers, retailers

This week Foursquare debuted the singular piece that launched Twitter into the stratosphere: an API. This application programming interface allows third-party developers to build anything they desire on top of Foursquare’s location-based social network.

It’s been shown time and again that once these ecosystems gain momentum, potential competitors face an arduous task. From Flickr to Google Maps to Twitter and beyond, it’s clear that early critical mass — having enough users and applications to make a service invaluable — sets the stage for a landslide victory.

Google’s Android, entering the mobile platform wars long after the iPhone App Store had served up a veritable smorgasbord of apps to its army of users, is evidence of the chicken-and-egg problem that arises for new competitors: What’s the incentive for users and developers to switch to a smaller, less visible platform once a leader has emerged?

With the launch of its API, Foursquare looks set to capitalize on this “rich get richer” phenomenon before others can make a play. Foursquare is doing more than wooing users and developers, however: It’s also courting local bars and restaurants.

“Foursquare for Businesses” is a platform for retailers wishing to offer special deals to Foursquare users: Check in to frozen desert maker Tasti D-Lite at two venues in New York, for instance, and you’re eligible for a discount.

Competitors abound

Nonetheless, multiple players are vying for victory in the location-based services market. Between Gowalla, Loopt, Brightkite and Google’s Latitude, Foursquare will by no means have an easy ride. While Gowalla debuted an early version at SXSW 2009 alongside Foursquare, both Loopt and Brightkite have a head start.

All of these services, I’d argue, lack the highly addictive game play that appears to have Foursquare users hooked.

Google is undoubtedly the 800-pound gorilla, but the fastidiously numbers-driven search engine has proven time and again that it cannot grasp social-networking dynamics — from Orkut to Friend Connect (its Facebook Connect competitor) to its failure to turn Google Video into a YouTube competitor.

One company may unwittingly squash Foursquare in its infancy: Twitter itself. The very service that propelled Foursquare to prominence is rapidly building out its location-based features, with a location API that directly challenges Foursquare. Twitter already has the critical mass of users and ecosystem of eager developers. If it executes correctly, the service could leave Foursquare in the dust.

In Foursquare’s favor: Young, fast-growing startups such as Twitter often find their engineering teams overstretched simply trying to achieve scale. Twitter has added less than a dozen new features since launch as preventing frequent downtime has become its greatest challenge.

Meanwhile, the overlap in investors means the Twitter-Foursquare relationship is unlikely to turn sour. Foursquare may network its way to the top in 2010 or find itself lost in an increasingly competitive landscape. Early adopters are betting on the former.

I had a meeting with our Education Support coordinator today. She is concerned about how we can best

I had a meeting with our Education Support coordinator today. She is concerned about how we can best meet the needs of a couple of students, currently in year 6, who are moving into year 7 in 2010.

They have some specific needs:

While they generally see and understand any notes made on a whiteboard (or equivalent), they find it very difficult to take accurate notes from this (for a variety of reasons).

They can be very particular and careful to get everything exactly correct.

Limited attention span

They would benefit from:

Having their own copy of any notes / diagrams etc generated by the teacher during the lesson.

Not needing to make this copy themselves manually

Having a clear and logical system to use to store their notes

A system where their parents can quickly and easily see these notes to assist with any homework where necessary.

So, the search for a ICT based solution to help them begins. Currently, I’ve got 2 options in mind.

Option 1

The first option originally suggested by our Ed-support coordinator was for each student to have a Mimio style IWB setup, coupled with a netbook computer (like this Dell Latitude 2100).

While this option could probably be quite effectively tailored to tick all the boxes above, I have a few reservations:

While each of these items themselves are quite small, when added to already burgeoning school bags it ends up being quite a task to carry these extra items around all day. (Granted, weight savings can be made using digital text books etc.)

This is quite a teacher intensive solution. It would require the class teacher to set up the equipment at the beginning and end of each lesson, have the required pens/stylus setup, to be trained… it goes on. Class teachers are under enough pressures already, I’d like this solution to be as unobtrusive as possible.

Cost – While I’m yet to actually do the sums, I’m sure this won’t exactly be a cheap solution.

Option 2

This idea came to me while I was taking notes in this meeting using Evernote on my iPhone. I wondered if the students could actually use a camera device to take photos of any notes on the board, then transfer to Evernote. Where, they could store these notes in individual notebooks for each subject.

They could either use this in conjunction with a netbook computer in class, or, download all of their notes to a computer at home.

My vision looks something like this:

The students have a connected device with a camera (iPod Touch with a camera would be the perfect solution – why, oh why, Apple, is there not such a thing yet?!!! Anyone know if this would work with a Nano? Other devices – iPhone excluded?)

Once the teacher finished their notes (or diagrams, pics etc) on the board, the student takes a snapshot of the board.

The pic is synchronised with their Evernote account. (The beauty of this is that text within this picture is searchable in Evernote – awesome!)

They have a netbook in class – logged into their Evernote account. As the pic synchronises, they move it to the appropriate notebook, alongside any other work or notes they have taken in class.

The parent also has access to their Evernote account, and can keep up to date with their progress.

The downsides:

The technology I want to use isn’t yet available! An iPod Touch with a camera would be just perfect for this. I don’t want to suggest iPhone – as this opens a whole new can of worms that we aren’t ready for yet. Are there any alternatives? Could an iPod Nano perhaps be used – if not for no Wi-Fi connectivity or Evernote app.

This is a much more student focused solution. We need to investigate the ability of the students to be able to manage this solution. Given the nature of the particular needs of these students, I suspect that they would pick up the technology quite quickly. Managing their notes carefully may require some extra scaffolding.

I think this solution could really work well.

Does anyone have other ideas? I’d love to hear them!

hotmail, yahoo, google, ovi, etc

Anderson on the occasion of her 90th birthday was held in the Quad lower college hall at the University of St Andrews on February 13th 1999. A collaboration by the School of History, Early Medieval Research Group, Scottish Studies Institute and Committee for Dark-Age Studies, its focus and its speakers ensured its success. It was fully booked. While Dr Anderson was unable to hear presentations because of illness, she would have marvelled at the excitement and energy generated in both lecture hall and lunchroom by speakers and delegates all pressing to share new developments in this emergent discipline. Drs Simon Taylor and Dauvit Broun unveiled new discoveries in placename survival and the St Andrews foundation legend (versions A and B); Profs. Richard Sharpe and Máire Herbert gave both insular and Irish slants on the political structure of Dál Riata; Isabel Henderson unveiled her theory on specific sculpture schools of the Picts; while both Prof. David Dumville and Dr David Howlett, of Universities of Cambridge and Oxford respectively, kept delegates on tenterhooks with their expositions on the Chronicle of Kings of Alba and on the sacred numerology of its 12thC verse equivalent, the anonymous De Situ Albanie. Prof. Archie Duncan pulled the audience into the present millennium with his fine elucidation of the Melrose and Holyrood Pictish Chronicles, followed by an immaculate summation and tribute to Mrs Anderson by Prof.Geoffrey Barrow of the University of Edinburgh. He concluded, along with the authors of ‘1066 and All That’ that [the conference, sources and] chronicles were ‘a damn good thing.’ He (along with us) awaits somewhat impatiently the publication of ‘all these riches’. Members who would like to be advised either of further conferences or publications produced by Dr Barbara Crawford’s Committee for Dark-Age Studies or of details of membership in Dr Simon Taylor’s Scottish Placename Society can write to St Andrews Scottish Studies Institute, University of St Andrews, Fife KY16 9AL.
WHITECROSS Equinox

ABERDEEN member Dr Theodore Allan remarks on the Hill of Whitecross one mile south of Chapel of Garioch at NJ 717 225, visible from the recumbent circle of Balquhain but not from Easter Aquhorthies. His interest is apt at this time of year, as it is a marker hill for sunset on the Feast Day of Bride (Candlemas, and incidentally at its opposite season, Martinmas). However its derivation as the Hill of the White Cross or Crossing may stem from its sacred point of the moon’s crossing or setting – as seen from Balquhain – at the end of summer, the pagan White season, and the point where the full moon sets once in 19 years at its minor standstill. This should be a hill to watch in the summer of 2014 at the next standstill! The physical crossing of the hill must also have had significance to Bronze Age and Pictish descendants, as anyone who has walked the Netherton of Balquhain road can testify. Leaving behind in the east the Bronze Age burial cairn on Dilly Hill, NJ 751 224, and walking due west, not only does the outline of the Hill of Whitecross draw the eye but for a mile and a half the traveller’s visiion is filled with the sacred shape of the Mother mountain Bennachie. At Burnside of Balquhain, NJ 730 225, where the road turns sharply north, the walker can clearly see how the old road used to rise directly west to Whitecross, itself topped by a cairn. An added delight for placename enthusiasts is the name of this miniscule valley created by the burn which springs on Whitecross’ lower slopes, flows past Burnside and Mains of Balquhain, turning to join the Urie at Drimmies (which Pictophiles will know has its own symbol stone: it is the Strathnaterick, valley of the serpent of ancient wisdom. This lonely stretch of road, now mostly used by farm traffic, is an inspiration to walk on a spring evening. Thanks to Dr Allan for his observations.

BLUE MOON

TWO OF our regulars communicate on the phenomenon of this year’s blue moons, first in January and now in March; Griselda Macgregor in Inverurie and Trevor Alcott in Crimond are both interested in lunar activity, although from slightly different angles: Ms Macgregor requests the reason for the use of the term ‘Blue Moon’, i.e. for two full moons in the month, while Mr. Alcott likes to extrapolate grander figures of moons in the Metonic cycle. We might cover both in a limited way. First, we find no-one in any context outside Scotland, and perhaps even outside the bounds of Aberdeenshire, using the term ‘blue moon’ to mean two full moons in the month [in 1999, January 2: 0250; 31:1607, accompanied by a visible penumbal lunar eclipse at 1619; March 2: 0659; 31: 2249 - all times GMT]. The fact that February this year had no full moon at all is purely a figment of modern man’s calculations, as our forefathers when they spoke of the moon, meant the month, and vice versa. The arbitrary nature of the ‘phenomenon’ can be seen, particulary in the second March date, to occur only from Europe west, and not for instance, in Australia, where the second full moon falls within April. While not answering the question, we open the door to any contributions from members who have NE knowledge of folkloric or traditional useage.

LUNAR STANDSTILLS

We have touched on standstill moons before, as the time once every 18.61 years that the moon is seen at its most erratic in the night sky, behaving as if with a ‘wobble’. We receive several calls a year requesting more detail for stone-watchers with astronomical leanings – the latest from a member in Edinburgh who prefers anonymity.

Trevor Alcott puts it simply:

‘Correction for our latitude (57ºN approx) is, according to Reed’s Nautical Almanac, seven minutes. The rule is, when declination is north, subtract from moonrise time and add to moonset time. Reverse applies if declination is south. Our biggest problem is one with which mariners do not have to cope, i.e. the height and distance of the horizon relative to the observer, but I promise, you don’t want to know! The easiest way is to observe a few full moons, note the times, and correct from the nautical times for that particular observation point.’

Sensible man. So, for those early birds preparing for their next maximum and minimum moonset and moonrise, when the moon’s motion relative to other months is distinctly wobbly, may we suggest marking your diary now:

Next major standstill at the full moon nearest to winter solstice occurs in 2005, when the full moon will rise in midwinter at the most northerly point it ever rises.

Next minor standstill, or full moon nearest to summer solstice, happens in 2014.

If we are spared, we may try for a gathering for wobble watchers at a stone circle to compare notes.
Developers can now see progress reports on the apps they’ve submitted. [Wired]

Traditionally, submitting an app into the store has given many the developer a mass of headaches and hernias. But this is at least a small step towards giving developers an easier time.

In related news, Apple has denied two Google apps (Latitude and Voice) entry into the app store. Because it would confuse users. And because it duplicates iPhone features? [Gizmodo]

The problem with having only one space where apps can be distributed, and having that space being dictatorially controlled by Apple is… well, things like this happen. There must be a solution out there! Somewhere!

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 4:15 PM

Since the launch of Google Latitude earlier this year, we’ve been getting a lot of feature requests. One of the most popular ideas was for Latitude to keep track of location history, allowing you (but not your friends) to see where you’ve been at any point in time. Another popular idea was to notify you when you’re near your Latitude friends so you can easily meet up or grab lunch. Today, we’re happy to introduce both Google Location History and Google Location Alerts (beta) to let you do even more with Latitude.

Google Location History
Whether you’re taking a road trip across the country, backpacking across Europe, or just going out for a night on the town, it’s fascinating to look back at where you went, and for how long you stayed. Enable Google Location History to store, view, and manage your past Latitude locations. You can visualize your history on Google Maps and Earth or play back a recent trip in order. Of course, you can always delete selected history or your entire location history at any time. While working on Location History, I found myself going back in time to discover things that would have otherwise been impossible. For example, I stopped at an awesome BBQ place on my way back from Lake Tahoe this summer, but I couldn’t remember the name when my friend was asking about it a few months later. I pulled up my location history for that weekend, found where I was stationary on the drive home, and the restaurant name showed up in Google Maps: Drooling Dog Bar BQ. Check it out below:

Google’s human location tracking service Latitude has received two new features: a history (i.e. a route of where you’ve been), and a “friend is nearby” type of alert functionality. The second feature depends on the first to work, because Google wanted to make location alerts smart enough to understand when a friend visit is something you might want to know about – because it’s not too regular – and when not… “It would get pretty annoying to get a text message every single time you walked in the door at home or pulled into work”, as Google puts it.

My work laptop…is awesome! So, everything I said about Dell computers in my last post does not apply to their SMB machines. The manager of my company wanted me to have a lighter machine, so it doesn’t have as big a screen as I would like, but the E6400 does have:

a 14″ screen

4GB RAM

2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo P9600

256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS

backlit keyboard, bluetooth, wireless n

Like I said, this computer is awesome! With Windows 7 now on it, and XP mode for our older software and hardware (aka, scanner), the machine has not had a hiccup. It does everything I need, and just having a machine like that is worth its weight in gold. I don’t game on this machine, so I haven’t stressed it out in that regard. I do have a DWF program though, and it flies compared to our work desktops.

I’ve been given a laptop for work! It’s a Dell Latitude D610, which is running XP (good!) and, though inferior to my current desktop in processor speed and RAM, at least can read DVDs – which the desktop can’t! And I hope it will decrease my carbon footprint somewhat.

Perhaps, most importantly, the screen is not ‘bleeding’ like the current one for the desktop (everything’s got a horizontal ‘trail’ to the right); and the whole setup is mobile.

I wanted to transfer a photo from my mobile phone via infrared, but strangely there was no Wireless Link (which I always thought poorly named) option in Control Panel, nor was any IR device listed.

Searching the Web, I learnt that I had to go into BIOS at boot-up, to enable the infrared port (disabled by default). Why?? For what reason would Dell provide functionality but turn it off at BIOS level? Quite twisted thinking, I think.

Yes, the latest Moblin V.2.1 does not support Broadcom wifi on mini10v.
Here is how to proceed to get it to work right and in just few minutes…First, you will need a wired connection to the internet. Second we are going to download and install several dev-tools needed to install the Broadcom drivers that are missed from the recent Distro. Sure, you could use the Dell Ubuntu Moblin Remix but I do not like it at all and wanted to go with the real deal!

1. From Moblin, open Terminal (Applications/Accessories/Termial
2. Type this command:

sudo yum install rpmdevtools

type Y for yes when prompted to do so
3. Type this command:

sudo yum groupinstall “Development Tools”

type Y for yes when prompted to do so
4. Type this command:

sudo yum install kernel-netbook-devel

type Y for yes when prompted to do so
5. Type this command to get the drivers:

wget http://slaine.org/files/moblinv2/wl-kmod-5.10.91.9.3-1.moblin.src.rpm

6. Type this command to rebuild the driver:

rpmbuild --rebuild --target=i586 wl-kmod-5.10.91.9.3-1.moblin.src.rpm

7. Install the resulting rpm by typing this:

sudo rpm -ivh ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/i586/wl-kmod-5.10.91.9.3-1.moblin.i586.rpm

8. Reboot your Dell mini10v and join in your favorite hot spot!

To all the people out there that loves Moblin as much as I do, here is a quick guide on how to dual boot OS X and Moblin without having to go too far from simple text files editing…

If you are starting from scratch with your PC system, here the proper order;

1. Install OS X (in my case is 10.6) leaving a 15GB partition as FREE SPACE. I am assuming you are using Chaeleon RC3 as bootloader.
2. Install Moblin (in my case V.2.1) using the 15GB as 14GB ext3 (make sure is at boot is in the root “/” ) and 1GB as Linux swap.
3. Boot into Moblin for the very first time and go to terminal (Accessories/Terminal)
4. Type this code to modify your GRUB (your bootloader):

sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.conf

5. Enter your password and gedit will open in a new zone…I love it!
6. At this point you will able to read all the available entries. Delete the call-outs for
silent boot and hidden menu
located after the default and timeout. Set the timeout to 6, this gives you time to select before boot the default entry, which you can also modify 0,1,2…
7. Probably, the only one available entry is Moblin, you can now add you OS X entry right below it leaving a space. My new entry looks like this:

title Mac OS X (10.6 Snow Leopard)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader (hd0,2)/boot/boot0

Lets break it down it for added understanding: hd0,0 is my main disk, first partition. hd0,2 is my third partition where Moblin calls home the system files.
8. Save the file.
9, Reboot using a Chameleon USB pen drive. Make one in less than 3 minute by formatting the USB with a GUID partition table and installing Chameleon in it. Select your OS X partition and this will boot into OS X.
10. From terminal run this command replacing X ad Y with your OS X disk details, you can get them from Disk Utility (right click on the HD and get info):

dd if=boot1h of=rdiskXsY)

11. Copy your boot0 from the bootable USB to a new FAT formatted USB pen drive.
12. Boot into Moblin and copy your boot0 from the FAT USB drive into your temp folder. You will achieve this by copy and paste the file.
13. From terminal run this line to move the file:

sudo mv /temp/boot0 /boot

You boot0 is not under /boot and you are done!
14. Reboot and start OS X from GRUB by selecting it from the boot menu

NOTE
My disk/partition structure:
hd(0,0) FAT32 (Chameleon bootloader)
hd(0,1) Mac OSX extended GUID (OS X 10.6)
hd(0,2) ext3 (Moblin v.2.1)
hd(0,3) Linux swap (swap space for Moblin)

The Scriptures are the standard against which any arguement for a Christian should stand or fall. Wi

The Scriptures are the standard against which any arguement for a Christian should stand or fall. Without such a standard to compare with, any attempt to prove a thing becomes futile, subject to misinterpretation.

Think for a moment! How would you prove that a rug you bought was 9 by 12 feet? You would need a ruler, a standard to measure by. How would you know the ruler to be correct? The final word on the matter would come from the Bureau of Standards in Washington which keeps masters on hand for every weight or measurement.

Now how will you check the new moons? Are you certain the first day of the month is in the correct place or should it be a day or two earlier? Where is the master, the standard to go by?

Here is the answer! What advantage did Paul have being a Jew? “Unto them [the Jews] were committed the oracles of God” (Romans 3:1,2). Oracles are communications from God. These must be our final authority in the problem with regard to new moon dates. The question now arises, where is the oracle which will solve the problem of new moon dates? Is the Jewish calendar such an oracle?

Who gave the Jewish people their calendar? Suppose you found it to be the same person who preached for 3 1/2 years, chose 12 disciples to be apostles and then gave His life on the cross, to be resurrected three days later. Would you be willing to hear Him?

Notice Stephen’s testimony to the High Priest concerning Moses and Christ, “This is he [Moses], that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel [or messenger — Christ] which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us” (Acts 7:38).

How to Prove It

Now consider this: The One who became Jesus Christ spoke to Moses and Aaron (not to the entire congregation) saying, “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.” These two men were to instruct the people to use this Sacred Calendar.

GOD gave the Calendar. Man is to use it. Is man to stand in judgment of God as to whether this divine communication, this oracle, is proper or not? Hardly.

The knowledge of the inner working of the Calendar was retained by God’s appointed physical priesthood until the year 360 A.D. In that year the Jewish leaders published the information for all to know, so the broken and scattered Jewish nation (and Christians as well) would be able to continue the observance of God’s Feast Days in accordance to the new moons as calculated from Jerusalem.

Jerusalem was always the point from which the new moons were observed and sanctified. It was the Sanhedrin, the Supreme Court in Jerusalem, that determined when the new moon was apparent. And it was their responsibility to notify the Jewish communities of the beginning of the months.

However, by 360 A.D. when oppression and persecution threatened the continued existence of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish leaders took an extraordinary step to allow the scattered Jews to keep the new moons, festivals and Holy Days always at the same time. They then made public the system of calendar computations that hitherto had been an apparently guarded secret of the priesthood.

Thus, all Jews (and Christians) throughout the world could know when the new moon would occur according to Jerusalem time and consequently they could celebrate the same day all over the earth in unity.

It should be obvious now how to prove all things. Check them against the Oracles of God. What are these Oracles preserved by God through the Jewish people? Three: The Scriptures, The Sabbath, and The Calendar.

It was God’s prerogative to give these communications and commands. It was God’s responsibility to see that they were preserved down to our time. It was God’s judgment that a stiff-necked, rebellious, unchanging Jewish people should be given the assignment to preserve His Calendar, His Sabbath, His Scripture. With God behind them you may be sure that they carried out this task.

Do the Jews Obey?

The matter of whether the Jews have obeyed these Scriptures, rested on this Sabbath, kept the correct days in the correct manner on this Calendar, is an entirely different question.

There is no need to follow the Jews in their rebellion. Stephen continues, “Our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt.” In rejecting Moses, they rejected Christ whom he represented.

If you reject Moses today, if you reject the Oracles given through Moses, you also reject the One who sent him. The overwhelming majority of those of you who read this had ancestors who did reject Moses and Christ as their leaders and were condemned to die in the wilderness.

The real reason now becomes apparent why it is so hard for us to turn our hearts and minds to the true way that God has given to us. We have inherited this same stiff-necked rebellious nature.

Questions Answered

Doesn’t the faint crescent of the new moon become visible at an earlier time to the observer in California than to an observer in Jerusalem?

Yes, it does and for a number of reasons.

Mainly that the day travels from east to west across the globe. A day starts on the eastern coast of China or Australia (or even earlier with the islands just to the west of the International Date Line). It requires 24 hours to make a complete circuit arriving once more at the International Date Line. The moment of sunset thus travels westward across the earth. It would occur in Jerusalem 10 hours earlier than in California, which is 10,000 miles farther west.

This 10 hour difference would allow the moon to move 5 degrees eastward through the background of stars away from the sun’s position. The crescent of the new moon could thus be seen one day earlier by California observers about 40 per cent of the time. What are God’s instructions? If the people of Jerusalem, where God’s permanent headquarters are to be, cannot see this crescent of the moon following sunset, then the entire world east and west of that city must delay beginning the month till the following sunset.

This is the ordinance as it was given by God. We are not free to begin earlier because of the way we see it.

Another 6 hour difference as to the date for the new moon is introduced by the practice of delaying the ending of a day till midnight. Your almanac and Roman calendar “new moon” dates follow this pagan practice. This factor alone would shift the date of the new moon one day earlier 25 per cent of the time. Yet this pagan source is the one that many of you have used to check God’s Sacred Calendar. Isn’t it time we shift our allegiance to God’s Oracles and away from the customs and terminology of the heathen?

Still another factor makes this crescent of the new moon visible earlier in California. Just as the path of an eclipse of the sun moves from west to east across the earth so the moment at which the crescent would become visible (if the observer’s time were just after sunset) also moves from west to east across the globe and for the same reason. Up to 6 1/2 hours are required for this moment to cross the earth.

Thus while the day comes to us from the east, the month (or the moment the month might begin) sweeps across the earth from the west. It is natural for the western observer to want to begin his month too early. But it is God’s calendar and His month based on that calendar that we ought to follow.

A Difference in Latitude

Another question: Does one’s latitude also make a difference in his ability to see this crescent of the new moon in the west just after the sun goes down?

Yes, this also affects the problem on all except two days of the year, the day of the spring equinox (March 21) and of the autumnal equinox (September 23).

On these two days the sunset line runs straight north and south on the surface of the earth from south pole to the north. Latitude thus makes no difference in sunset time on these two days. Sunset would be six o’clock (sun time) for everyone. (The fact that standard time is commonly used for an entire time belt and is based on mean solar time would mean that the time shown by our clocks might vary up to 50 minutes and in certain localities over an hour from sun time.)

During the summer months the sunset line curves toward the northeast with a portion of the north Polar region in continual sunlight. During the winter months the sunset line curves toward the northwest with a portion of the north polar region in darkness 24 hours a day. (These statements are for the northern hemisphere only. The conditions are reversed south of the equator.)

The moment at which an observer at any point on the earth might see the crescent of a new moon and want to begin his month varies widely. Even the factor of whether the moon is north or south of the ecliptic, slightly affects the ability of the observer to see the crescent, especially in the extreme latitudes.

Conjunction or Crescent

A third question: Is the new moon noted on the Roman calendar or in an almanac or astronomy book the same term as the new moon on God’s Sacred Calendar? Not at all. The term “new moon” from these secular sources refers to the conjunction (or molad) of the sun and moon rather than the visible crescent which could first be seen about six hours later.

The astronomer’s “new moon” is the moment an eclipse of the sun might occur. (The moon is usually above or below the sun rather than in front of it. Thus eclipses do not occur at each of these “new moons”.) But remember that this conjunction occurs at least 6 hours before any observer anywhere can see the new moon crescent with his eyes.

God’s new moon on the other hand is the beginning day of a month, a day that begins at sunset at least 6 hours after this conjunction. Both the conjunction and sunset must be calculated for the Jerusalem area not for our local area. Then the first day of the new month moves west across the earth.

Delay for Preparation

A fourth question: Isn’t the first day of God’s Sacred Calendar sometimes delayed for special reasons?

Yes. One reason for delaying the beginning of a month is to prevent the day of Atonement (Annual Sabbath) from falling on a Friday which is a preparation day. Another is to prevent any of the autumn annual festivals from falling on a Sunday. All feasts which follow Pentecost represent the SECOND PART of God’s Plan. They must not fall on Sunday which would represent the FIRST part of God’s Plan which began 1300 years ago.

Timed for the Future

A final question: Don’t the Jews themselves admit that the computation of the length of the month and length of the year upon which this Sacred Calendar is based are not quite in perfect accord with the present day figures provided by the very exacting measurements of our modern astronomers?

Yes, this is true. It would be more surprising if it were not true. There are slow accumulative changes in the length of the month and year over centuries of time.

This minute variation which makes 13 Sacred Years slightly longer than 19 astronomical years is a very important clue to chronology. But that subject is too long for this article! This variation, however, does not affect the mathematical calculation of new moons.

Is it unusual that the One who planned the Sacred Calendar should be one step ahead of both the astronomers of the time of Moses and the present twentieth century? With a perfect understanding of the movements of the heavens as well as the needs of man, God looked forward over a six thousand year period and prepared a Calendar that would keep in harmony with the heavens throughout the entire time.

It was this system that was restored to the children of Israel as they were being freed from bondage and it is this system that is preserved for us today by God through the Jewish people.

No need exists for any change or alteration in the Sacred Calendar prior to Christ’s return and we look for no such change from the Jewish people. The published dates of the Jews and of our Sacred Calendar which cover the entire twentieth century are absolutely correct.
