I have remarked before on the fact that Dublin is home to some wonderfully original club nights. And just as things were getting a little boring, along came C.U.N.T, your answer to indie/electro pop of a Tuesday. It’s ‘taster’ was held last week in Crawdaddy, it’s weekly residency. Que, Peter Fingleton, amazing Dublin based club photographer and Alan Taylor, DJ extraordinaire and one of the duo previously responsible for popular club night, ‘T.A.C’ who spun tunes all night to a host of Dublin’s movers and shakers.

This Tuesday, December 1st is it’s official launch with a guest appearance from Derek Fear, The Oak’s resident DJ who is nothing short of dancefloor shaking along with the usual C.U.N.T Dj’s.

Just go. Debauchery is guaranteed….

‘CHILLED IN THE FRONT, PARTY IN THE REAR…

All PINTS are €3, ALCOPOPS €2…Dang thats cheap…

€3 before 12, 5 after

We turned 1 today! Though we had started the first data import from Netflix on 18th of Nov 2009 (timestamp says so), the website was launched today.

Back then we had only Netflix title names, plot summary and actor info. Today an year down the line, we have a new UI, movie reviews from NYTimes, embeddable widgets, Amazon editorial reviews and much more.

We were featured on NYTimes First Look blog and were judged Programmable web mashup of the day. We also received a lot of suggestions and feedback from friends which helped us a lot in fixing several design and navigation issues.

A cheers for our entire team for helping us reach here!

One of the roles I must play to truly serve my clients is that of a “Heretic”. I often listen to business leaders discuss how what distinguishes them, their team, their product or service in their marketplace. They confidently state ; product quality, our service, and my favorite of all…our relationships is our competitive advantage… Bla…Bla…Bla. That is when I need to explain that in today’s competitive global economy, quality, customer service and relationships are not differentiators. Very quickly some leaders become defensive and start discussing how “I don’t understand their industry…” and they often start sharing how “their competitors suck”. Again, you may have weak competitors, but the fact that you may or may not be better than competitors that suck is not a way to differentiate yourself or create a sustainable competitive advantage…(sorry)

The Bible is provides us some very clear advice in this area…” “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ( Matt. 7:3) and this advice rings true as leaders must look within their own organizations and establish their internal truths.

Having a core competency in; service, quality, or market relationships is not enough anymore.

Your team must have something that differentiates you in your market as Jack Trout explains in his popular book: Differentiate or Die. The authors of the best selling book: Tuned In, refer to this as your “distinctive competence.” The difference between a core competence and a distinctive competence is the latter differentiates you in your market.

You must gain a clear understanding of your distinctive competence in your strategic planning.

Assuming you established Market Truth as I discussed in my previous post, the next truth you must clearly understand is your internal truth(s). To help my clients establish their internal truths I like to ask a number of questions;

What do your customer’s say your team does better than your competitors?

What are the strengths and capabilities of your team leaders?

What is your team’s track record in terms of market growth over the past five years?

How many new products have you launched in the last three years?

Did those new products meet or exceed your launch objectives and ROI targets? Why or Why not?

Has your team introduced existing product(s) into new markets in the past two years? Did you meet or exceed your sales goals?

What is your current unused capacity that does not require additional investment?

What is your team’s ability to raise funds to support growth?

Do you have the access to funds to support your growth?

When was the last time you or one of your team’s leaders spent time in the market?

For example, I was asking these questions with one of my new clients in the past and their senior team all said the same thing but in different ways; “ we are not good at new…” What was interesting however was that at the recent off site strategic planning meeting it was decided that they would leverage new products to hit next year’s sales objectives. When I interviewed some of their key accounts they too confirmed this teams poor track history in launching new products. One clients said “ they are a great vendor, but they launch new products before they are ready, so we plan to wait six to eight months after their next launch to insure the product has all the bugs worked out before we buy…” Ouch!( their sales plan was not in alignment with clients waiting six months to buy) Again , what was disturbing was the mid level managers and their key accounts all knew a truth that the only people who failed to see were their senior management team. Sometimes senior leaders see issues and put band aides on them hoping they will heal on their own.

As you plan for a profitable future year … Rip Off the Band Aide(s) and Position Your Business For Growth in 2010.

Another new client wanted “more sales” . However, when we reviewed their internal truths the reality was they were currently at 90% of their production capacity and could not service new business. Had we launched a plan to gain new customers we would have frustrated those new clients as well as existing customers ( and their employees) as their service levels would have suffered. As we peeled this onion further we found a large percentage of their current orders were not profitable. So what the owner saw as a need “more sales” was actually a problem with a sales compensation model not in alignment with overall sales profitability.

You must establish internal truths, distinctive competencies, and identify your weaknesses when building your strategic plan. What we are discussing is about

leveraging what you have. I am not saying as leaders you are not to improve weaknesses and bridge gaps . However what I am saying is you must authentically and openly humble yourself and your team to your internal realities.

Understanding your team’s strengths, as well as weaknesses and limitations insures the strategic plan you write for 2010 growth objectives is obtainable.

Market leading organizations clearly understand market and internal truths.

Market losing organizations can be identified by strategic plans not in alignment with their market or internal capabilities.

What kind of organization do you work for?

Does your 2010 strategic plan rely on effectively launching new products? (even though the last launch was supposed to sell 2,000 and only sold 2?)

Does your senior leadership team have the horsepower to take your business into a market leadership position?

Are you relying on those that got you’re here to get you there in the future? How’s that working for you?

Does your 2010 strategic plan count on you leveraging a capability your team does not have?

Have you reviewed the “why’s” your team failed to meet some of their objectives in 2009? Have you corrected what you found?

If you failed to achieve some of your 2009 strategic plan targets was it a “strategy” or “execution” problem? …you sure?

Market leaders understand the importance of identifying internal truths when strategic planning.

Market leaders understand the power of leverage. They leverage their distinctive competencies that solve market problems.

The launch of GEW 2009 My week started at the official UK launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week 200

The launch of GEW 2009

My week started at the official UK launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009 in London. I’m not sure how I managed to get an invite to this exclusive event but I wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to see Peter Jones (Dragons’ Den)….yes, I am a fan of the show!

There was actually a very impressive line up of speakers…. from Goldman Sachs, Google UK, Alibaba.com and A4E amongst others, addressing a fairly mixed audience of people involved in the broad spectrum of entrepreneurship and enterprise – from grassroots to policy.

Many of the key messages we’ve heard before – we need to do more in schools, entrepreneurship needs to be encouraged all year round, we need to take more risks, debating whether or not entrepreneurship can be successfully taught, enterprise knows no borders, etc.

The importance of entrepreneurship in driving economic recovery was emphasised on a number of occasions, but there was also a call for the media to start celebrating the success of UK enterprise rather than focus on the failures.

Although most agreed that much more can be done by the government in terms of tax incentives, entrepreneurship doesn’t and shouldn’t depend upon state interventions. As one speaker put it, there is too much of a safety net in the UK. What truly drives entrepreneurship is necessity.

I main thing I enjoyed was the opportunity to hear from real entrepreneurs rather than those that ‘represent them’. It’s a breath of fresh air. The passion and authenticity of their words, people that walk the walk, carries so much more interest and weight than the repetitive run of the mill sound bites that are really superficial and flat. It’s certainly confirmed for me that our flagship social enterprise programme is a step in the right direction, and I’d like to see SEWM move towards a communications strategy that provides a platform for more social enterprises and those that lead them to speak for themselves.

Hi everybody,
Thanks for stopping by. I am inspired, excited and a little scared at being here and taking the plunge to start a photoblog. Over the years, I have watched several great friends and fellow photographers make this commitment and have followed their blogs with interest. I have learned so very many things from each of them.

At some point, I realized that I was tending to spend a lot of time listening, watching and learning and not so much time photographing myself and taking an image to completion. At this point, I decided to commit to starting a photoblog myself. This is a vehicle that I am hoping will encourage me to shoot more, and take images to completion…enough to be able to show people. That in and off of itself will motivate me to grow as a photographer.

Moments of Exposure is a name my husband, Murali came up with…thanks Murali. This name to me means not only that specific moment when you commit to the image and shoot it, but also the moments when you feel exposed and vulnerable. It is my belief that from these moments of exposures that one grows in life.

Thank you for stopping by and showing support. I appreciate it very much.

The KMers.org site was ready for beta launch last week in time for the KMWorld09 conference. Today

The KMers.org site was ready for beta launch last week in time for the KMWorld09 conference. Today we launched the weekly #KMers twitter chat. I would guesstimate that we had about 15-20 people contributing to the Twitter Chat which means we probably had that number again of lurkers. Lots of quality information was shared and I believe that it was considered a success by all.

For many on the chat it was their first ever. Yet, despite a few small hiccups, everyone seemed to get the hang of it very quickly.

The topic (Best Ideas from KMWorld09) was not ideal for a Twitter Chat because it is more about sharing knowledge nuggets than having a conversation. Also, we had far more people who hadn’t gone to the conference and were looking for info than we had people who had gone to the conference and were sharing it. Future chats will be much more of a deeper dive into one facet of KM per chat.

Here is the summary of the chat from my perspective:

Introductions:

we discovered that most of the chatters had not been to KMWorld09 and many were new to Twitter Chatting

Thoughts about KMers.org

@Elsua: Member section should link in a Twitter List

@lehawes: pointed out that archiving of chats will be a plus

several indicated that KMers.org login and TweetChat login (double) was confusing

@andreamayer pointed out that we had a glitch with a post being wrongly attributed

There were a few other small problems encountered by a few people during the chat

Goals for attending #KMW09

@swanwick indicated he was there 1) to network 2) to launch KMers.org

@StanGarfield said he was there to speak, serve on a panel, learn, and interact

Tone of session: @swanwick indicated that it seemed hopeful. Hopeful that e2.0 would be the opp for KM and SM to work together.

Sub-discussions throughout the chat

value of life-narration: balance between inane tweets and over polished ones.

value of and how to measure KM value

video as a knowledge sharing channel

Neats vs. Scruffies http://bit.ly/7jf1WC

Best sessions at #KMW09:

the consensus was that @BillIves provided the best blogging coverage of the event

@forgingthfuture found discussion of Personal KM fascinating

@forgingthefutur felt that @StanGarfield had one of the best presentations http://bit.ly/5aSTeH

there was general appreciation for 2nd half of @vanderwal presentation http://bit.ly/7G4XVo

@swanwick liked @nancymdixon doing High Impact Storytelling: http://bit.ly/4FzUHO

@StanGarfield favs McAfee, Dixon, Li, Lambe, Gilmour, VanderWal. O’Dell

@StanGarfield enjoyed extracurricular dinner with 30 SIKM Leader CoP members – great discussions and personal interactions.

Om announced the launch of the GigaOm network redesign last night. Congratulations to Om, Paul, Jaim

Om announced the launch of the GigaOm network redesign last night. Congratulations to Om, Paul, Jaime, Shane and Peter, and the whole GigaOm team! I was delighted to help out with the redesign, and I’m even happier to see it live.

The redesign gave me a chance to work closely with friends old (Jaime Chen) and new (Shane Pearlman). Starting with some up front research, we solicited and consolidated feedback from editors, the ad sales team, and Om and then translated it into achievable goals for the redesign. We worked to hammer out the universal elements of the interface that we could distribute across network properties, prioritized functionality, and laid out content in a way that presented it in the most readable, attractive and engaging manner.

The redesign looks sharp, and that is entirely due to the heroic efforts of Jaime and the sheer talent of Shane and Peter. It was a real pleasure to work with such a dedicated and capable team. I’m very happy to see all their hard work pay off.
