With the release of Karmic, a lot of new wallpapers got themselves added to the default install. While they’re all stunningly beautiful, there’s one that struck me most: the cosmos wallpapers. They’re a set of wallpapers that change automatically. The moment I saw that it was already possible to make a slide show of wallpapers in the default install, I decided to dig a little deeper.

I found out that a simple XML file controlled the behaviour of the slide show. So, I decided to create a little program to create such an XML file.
You can find it here: Wallpaper Stacks. There is also a PPA, though only for Lucid at the moment. (I need to fix this, just change karmic/whatever to lucid in the mean time and please bear with me )

You can add one image file at a time, or an entire directory in one go. Then you can edit the duration/transition times and click save. You’re done! The XML file can be opened as a normal wallpaper.
The only thing that needs to be figured out is what the appropriate values for the duration/transition times are. Transitions tend to get stuck if you set a value that is apparently not correct, namely.

Any suggestions/improvements are more than welcome!

Update: All the source, plus an absolutely-alpha-beta-alpha build will be put up on Google Code very soon, but please be patient, since I have a lot of work right now. I’m trying to squeeze in work on this wherever i can, so I can get it out there

So, here is a few more details on Katapult. I’ve been adding a lot of stuff today, and getting close to something that is release-worthy. The current features include:

• Hold button
• Toggle button
• Horizontal fader
• Vertical fader
• Horizontal slider-zone
• Vertical slider-zone

Okay, might have forgotten something, but it does give a good overview of the current state of the thing. I’m going to implement support for 2D-pad controls, as well as an “indicator” control, that doesn’t send output, but can be used as an indicator light, before releasing it. I think that will make it out for a pretty suitable start. And after that? More advanced visualizers (beat-grid style, etc), timed functions, triggered after x beats, controller-chaining (altering one control can influence others), macros(!). A visual layout-editor would be nice but definitely won’t be first priority, since the layouts really are very easy to write by hand. Here’s a new video. It doesn’t show any of the bi-directional stuff, but it does make it clear how multi-page layouts are handled.

The more technical stuff: It’s all written in Processing. I’m writing and using it on OS X 10.6, but should work fine on other platforms as well. I found Processings MIDI support a bit annoying to work with (for output), so I took the easy route and offloaded the MIDI output handling to PureData through OSC. When I get the motivation, I’ll probably move the MIDI output back into the actual program, but I couldn’t find any MIDI-framework that did what I wanted to do, so PD is a fine solution right now. The patch is very simple and looks like this:

Yes, I say Katapult. What is it you say?

Well, I recently, after much struggle, got my hands on Novations Launchpad controller, hooray. It’s pretty cool, and very functional for controlling Ableton Live. Unfortunately my plan was never to use it with live, but instead with Traktor. In this regard, it is utterly lacking and uncool. Mostly because Novations Automap software is absolutely featureless in terms of what i wanted to do.

So when the software to make your dreams come true doesn’t exist, you just have to write it yourself. Hence I started writing Katapult. It’s intended to be a dynamic, totally customizable mapping solution for the Launchpad, that allows for much more functionality than the pretty mediocre hold-button scheme of Automap. So what does it do?

It allows you to create various controls on the surface of the Launchpad such as faders, buttons and “slider zones”. The MIDI output of these indivdual controls can then be mapped to different fuctions in Traktor, for example.

I have a lot of interesting ideas planned for this thing, but basics first. When I feel I’ve gotten all the basics down and tidied up the code a bit, I’ll release a preview and move on to some of the more interesting stuff

هدف فروشگاه موزیک Lucid، خرید موزیک از برنامه های پخش موزیک دسکتاپ است.

بنابراین نرم افزارهای آزاد هم می توانند تجاری باشند. فرق نرم افزارهای آزاد با نرم افزارهای غیرآزاد در احترامی است که نرم افزارهای آزاد به آزادی کاربران می گذارند است.

There is a misconception that your karma value in launchpad is somehow meaningful within the community, that the more karma that you have, the greater your trust or the better your chances in getting access to things or acquiring membership.

This simply isn’t true. The first problem is that karma in launchpad is a measure of activity on launchpad. So much of what the community does is not on launchpad and things which are not related to the Ubuntu community are counted. It’s not even a good measure of engineering talent as the more commits or translations you do the better your score.

When your looking to get membership or your looking to be trusted, people are much more aware of your recommendations as far as working with you and your significant sustained contributions. The membership board will look at your written wiki page and dig through various sources of information such as photos in your galleries, blog posts, team reports and how other people in the team know your work.

I never check Karma on launchpad, for me team membership and working with someone is much more important.

After a month of stagnation on my Tower Defense game, I implemented some cool stuff yesterday and today. Mainly a makeshift main menu and flashy animated text messages popping up.

Just a moment ago I started a Sourceforge.net project for it. Pretty neat! I appreciate that Sourceforge supports bazaar version control, and I do not yet know if I will discontinue the launchpad branch or keep it updated. Keeping it updated would be no big deal if I only bothered to write a proper ‘bzr push’ alias for both Sourceforge and Launchpad.

There is a source release of version 0.4 available. Binary releases for Windows will pop up soon (I am pretty sure I know how to do it properly!)[Update: Windows version available]. Please note that the game is not balanced at all and not near complete. Consider it alpha-stage.  However, it allows for an initial impression and I would be grateful for any feedback! A more rounded-up release is planned for next week

Firefox 3.6 beta 2 fue liberado recientemente, y ahora podremos instalarlo desde los repositorios PPA de Mozilla en Launchpad.

1.- Agregar el repositorio PPA a las fuentes de nuestro Ubuntu:

2.- Actualizar e instalar los paquetes para Firefox 3.6 beta:

Recordar que es una beta y por lo tanto suele venir con problemas e inestabilidades.

Nonome, the Monome emulator

With all the protocol under the sun, it was just a matter of days. And infact Peter at Create Digital Music informs us that Piclae made ( and it’s currently updating quite often ) a cool Monome emulator for the Launchpad. It seems most apps run smootly ( the major problem seems to be 7up ), and you can choose your favourite colour too! And if you’re guessing it, yes, you can keep your Ableton modes while using it!

OSC Wrapper, programming made easy

This is my favourite one! It’s a simple app by Will Crossland which translates the MIDI communication with the Launchpad into OSC. So, the 12 pages of  the protocol are reduced to 2 simple messages, /press and /led! The program lets you use 8 different “layers” to address 8 applications for each Launchpad. And yes, yes… you keep your out-of-the-box Ableton modes too! The application is made in Max/MSP, but only for the communication’s buses. All the code is placed inside a Javascript file, which everyone can modify to his needs. Cool stuff, cool stuff.

The nice part is that Will decided to use the approach of monome’s protocol due to its logical simplicity:

“The Monome OSC protocol is clearly well thought and well suited to addressing a 2D grid so why reinvent the wheel?”

I can’t agree more. And it would be cool to have a unified protocol for every grid controller! It seems like Monome’s users don’t like the Launchpad too much, but I think that both devices ( and think of Livid Instruments’ Block and Ohm64, too ) are simply different forms of the same concept. Monome’s succesful work is about faith in a concept that big names rejected at first. I personally don’t think a grid of back-lit buttons is any kind of invenction you can patent, and that talking about “stolen ideas” is inappropriate in this context. Concepts belong to people who are using that stuff, the wonderful community behind Monome for example. Now the family is extended, and I’ll be happy to see a common language, and people sharing their work, in the name of a common evolution. Will’s choice seems a good start in this direction!

Custom Max controller and Max4Live porting of  Monome’s apps is ispiring

Surfin’ around YouTube brought me to this Max/MSP application which makes the Launchpad a custom controller! I can’t understand exactly the features, I don’t understand the language, but it seems he made pages of presets’ grids mixed with slider controllers, which makes sense in many ways, like if your using it with your favourite synthesizer or for some kind of experimental generative application!

And you know, Max4Live public beta is started and people are having fun! So check out these Max4Live ports of Polygome and StepFilter by Stretta! It will not be difficult to adapt these to the Launchpad, expecially now that we have our OSC wrapper!

Most updated packages are PPA(Personal Package Archive) on Launchpad which makes our lives easier for installing it (we don’t have to compile from source). THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO PROVIDE.

For example, I googled SMPlayer on launchpad and choose the first choice that came up on the search.

Then see the highlighted words… ppa:rvm/smplayer

Then open the Terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type the following commands:

This is the general command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:”repository-name”
In other packages, copy the highlighted package name and paste over “repository-name”

As usual, it will ask your password, key in the password and wait until it has finished acquiring the gpg key.(Usually it will return to yourname@yourcomputername (Example: bleuwinter@bleubox)

Follow the instructions, if it ask you if you would like to continue to download 11.9MB (for example), key in Y and press enter.

Ubuntu Marketing Team revival and SpreadUbuntu

The Ubuntu Marketing team has existed for ages but has been a little unstructured, lacked a vision with a path of action and thus its potential has not been reached this far. Some good project have been created there (The Fridge and the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter being the greatest examples) but it’s been a long time since some palpable progress has been made. And that’s just sad, because we can make this team suck less and produce more.

Now, as the Ubuntu Community matures, the team seems to be gaining traction again and people, oldies and newcomers, are all excited about it! As a person that has been part of the team exactly since one year after its creation (October th 20th, 2005)  I have to add myself to the excitement!

As a sign of frustration with the lack of productivity of the team I decided to put my time, sweat and tears where my mouth is and took upon myself making a reality one of the oldest projects the Marketing team has had in mind: Spread Ubuntu. But in this, as with everything in life, wishes are not enough and my lack of time, technical know-how and Drupal/PHP knowledge could not take me that far. I had to get some hardcore web guru to join me. And lucky, and sometimes too vocal and loud, as I am I got some people interested. One of them, my man echowarp, aka now Ubuntu Member Evan Boldt, got really into the idea of Spread Ubuntu. His Drupal ability, technical insight and innovative self made in the end the Spread Ubuntu site a reality. Evan, you really are my Ubuntu Community Hero®! I will never get tired of saying that!

With the raise of SpreadUbuntu as a Marketing Team project and its potential as a central marketing tool for LoCos and newcomers alike the marketing team seems to finally have aligned itself with the spirit of the global Ubuntu community and has now gained a place in its awareness Things are moving along fast this time and ideas, contributions and initiatives are flourishing like they never before have!

So, if you are interested in fixing Ubuntu’s bug #1 reported by Mark Shuttleworth or have a deep desire to see the whole planet (as in Earth and the SpreadUbuntu logo) Ubuntized here and now is the time to get yourself involved and get things rolling!

Karmic Release in Norway

The Ubuntu 9.10 release got so much attention in the Norwegian IT media that I must say the phenomenon is unprecedented!

As if that was not enough: Ubunter@s in Norway are starting to get involved in the development of the team like never before and we are right now working on a reorganization of the Team itself and also revamping our web presence! Which really is for me a dream that comes true! We are talking about an Ubuntu Jam before Christhmas and what not!

Besides those new I have to say that I am impressed by the speed of the CD delivery to our LoCo team this time around. We received the Ubuntu 9.10 – Karmic Koala CDs 5 days after the release! Thanks Canonical!

Ubuntu Open Week in Spanish

Just to round up the Spanish-speaking Ubuntu community has managed to keep an alternative UOW for those that can’t speaking English but still want to learn more about our favorite distro and its community.

Many people have stepped up and held sessions all week. I, for one, have talked about Launchpad (Wednesday), Gnome (Thursday) and will hold a talk on SpreadUbuntu today for the Spanish community!

Launchpad is a software collaboration platform developed by Canonical (famous for Ubuntu ). Recently the the launchpad project went open source. This allowed people to host copies of it locally. The process for the installation process could be found here.

The next natural step is to configure remote computers to be able to access launchpad. After following the how-to by launchpad, and trying the access the local copy of launchpad from an external source, the following error is shown by the running launchpad server:

The solution to this lies in the /etc/hosts file on the client accessing the lauchpad copy. The file should contain the following:

{ip for server}      bazaar.launchpad.dev

{ip of the server} is the ip of the machine containing the running copy of the launchpad server. Also take care the lines starting with {ip of the server} until an empty line should be a single line in the file. For client systems that are not linux, check out the Wikipedia article concerning hosts for the files equivalent to “/etc/hosts”.

To run launchpad, access https://launchpad.dev/.

On a side note, when installing launchpad, it does not add scripts for running automatically at startup, this process has to be done manually.

Ok to begin with this album has trounced every other Indian album in terms of recording..
Actually, coming from DSR this isn’t surprising considering the experience.. And ofcourse the man himself ‘The Demonstealer’ in this band also (smiles), loves challenges coz its not all the time tht the frontman of an extreme metal band does vocals for a band tht sounds like Workshop..

hmmm.. the album ‘Khooni Murga’ (Murderous Cock tht is..) is packed with 10 tracks which define the gamut to which talented musicians can go when they come together.. tht is Workshop for you providing brutality n humor at the same time..

Musically the album is rich with guitar solos by Raj, insane drumming by Hamza, ‘jumping’ bass by Riju n ‘cute’ vocals by The Demonstealer…. He is such an adroit person tht u connect to watever he makes, whether its music or Demonic Omelet..

The album begins with ‘She Folked Up My Jazz’ n its a perfect song right frm whr it starts to the end, complete with every musical element tht u wanna hear.. Song-wise its a hit, coz the melody tht it carries is addictive, to an extent tht i end up humming along all the time.

Next song on this naughty album is ‘Pudhe Sarka’.. its abt a guy who is one of us travelling in a BEST bus n how he ends up hearing ‘pudhe sarka’ n ‘maage sarka’ frm the dictator on the bus – the conductor. Don’t knw abt others but i do not knw marathi at all, bt i sure do knw little bit of wat is part of this well-constructed song. N tht is all thnx to my experiences in BEST.

So lets ‘Pudhe Sarka’ with the review now..

Also tracks 3 and 4 r interchanged on the album (but thts a gimmick i suppose ). You are expecting the track ‘Chhati Ke Saath Panga’ to begin n bang comes the soothing intro of ‘I Came’… neways moving on ‘I Came’ is a track which u r bound to hear more than once, coz it vulpinely explains the subtle art of masturbation n how nimble you are when you are indulging in the same.

next up is a song abt a horny Patel lusting for a chick whilst his favourite festival is on – Garba n hence the name Garba Gandu. Coz he sure is a Gandu.. this song has everything in place n u expect some gujju beats n yes it follows. Hamza sure is talented coz he goes on to try everything.

‘How to make a Demonic Omelet’ is probably the weakest track of the album for me, followed by ‘Chhati Ke Saath Panga’ which is a somniferous track.. bt thts just wat i think…

next up is ‘Bunty aur Malika Sherwath’.. the track which got 15000 hits on youtube n still counting.. i went abt understanding exactly y ppl liked the track so much, n i feel its not only bcoz is controversial (read bunty, babli, malika n saif) but also coz its the first Indian track tht talks abt sandas n bable… yay! we Indians get turned on, u-knw-how..! The high point of this track is the drumming with Hamza playing triplets.. It just instantly catches ur attention.. overall u will like the track.. If not then atleast the lyrics.. fvck-off i knw u will..

‘Cookie Monster’ is the next track n The Demonstealer himself claims tht this track is not metal *recalls him saying tht during the launch gig *.. i like the track.. its NICE… bt it took time for me to figure out the riff tht got nominated for some ‘Best Riff’ award.. There are other songs by the band with better ‘riffs’…

The title track is the last one on this album n hence this short n hilarious album comes to an end.. I do want more of Workshop..

Also i’d like to mention Sahil’s killer effort to bring in tht multiple vocals effect.. seriously brilliant.. its most notable in ’she folked up my jazz’ and ‘i came’.. it beautifies the song majorly…

About the dvd tht comes along, haven’t checked it yet bt am sure it’ll be killer… though i heard the video for bable song is not present..

Next obvious thing to mention is the detailed album artwork tht explains the concept n the band thru sketches. Every song has its own customised work n its not loud.. Its just thr n fits perfectly…

the cd is accompanied with a poster n sticker which is something new.. so yeah y not!

All in all this album is worth a buy coz its nefarious, bawdy n brutal too…..

Buy it n play it.. it fulminates from track 1 itself…………..
