Natalie Starnes made me this yearbook junior year in high school. Jackie, Lauren and their friends also signed it. We were all in a photo class together which was a lot of fun. I like what Lauren Kelly said because I don’t quite totally get it (“betta 2 be MD!!! – LK AHHAHA”). Jackie’s friends Haley and Shelby also signed it but I didn’t know them very well and they just wrote nice stuff. There is always that weird situation where someone you know but not very well asks you to sign their yearbook and you don’t know what to write so you just write something generally nice like “Have a great summer!” or something like that. Haha yearbooks are great. I only got one senior year which now that I think about it kind of sucks. I was really anti-social in high school though. Natalie wrote some funny stuff. She talked about this kid Earl who was really weird and in our English class. She also makes a reference to a scene from the movie the Great Gatsby which we watched in English class and was an instant favorite of ours. I miss high school.

Lauren Kelly’s part of the New Museum’s Altoid Awards exhibit up now in their lobby. I gravitated towards her work because of it’s racial subject matter shown through a stop action animation with black Barbies. It was pretty cool to see something like that in a Museum.

Lauren Kelley

Lauren Kelley uses stop-motion animation to explore stereotypes of femininity and race. By using her voice to speak for a cast of black dolls, Kelley breathes life into plastic characters while poignantly and humorously addressing issues such as gender, womanhood, and the human condition. Whether telling stories of unplanned pregnancy or exploring the world of flight attendants, Kelley’s work introduces its viewers to a world in which dolls and puppets are caught in endless streams of consciousness and are trapped in a bizarre theater of the absurd. Kelley was born in 1972 in Baltimore, Maryland, and currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.

Äntligen fick jag läst klart Jag ska skydda dig från allt av Lauren Kelly. Det har blivit mest kurslitteratur och filmtittande på sistone och när jag väl fått en läslucka så har jag somnat efter tre sidor typ. Men igår orkade jag (precis) hålla mig vaken till sista sidan. Men oj vilken besvikelse slutet blev. Eller så är det tänkt att man ska gilla oupplösta slut kanske med en tänkt fortsättning i läsarens fantasi. Dock vill jag känna mig snäppet mer tillfreds än jag gjorde för att en bok skall få en femma av mig.

Annars var det en riktigt bra och spännande bok. Man får följa den unga Marta som bor tillsammans med sin faster på en konstnärskoloni utanför New York. Faster Drew har ett järngrepp om sin brorsdotter, framför allt psykiskt. En dag rövas de båda bort från kolonin och endast Marta återfinns, nerdrogad och utmärglad. Boken inleds med detta mysterium och skildrar därefter Marta och Drews relation från start. Mot slutet är det sjukt spännande men som sagt så tycker jag det blir lite snörpligt.

Jag gillar den psykologiska spänningsgenren som Kelly skriver inom och jag kan ju självklart inte låta bli att nämna den bok som fått mig att läsa allt av henne i hopp om en liknande läsupplevelse. Tag mig, tag mig med dig är en superbra bok som lätt tar en plats på min topp-tio-lista. Jag ska skydda dig från allt är bra, men inte fullt så bra.
