At Step x Step Dance, we try to branch out and utilize the talents and skills of different people. One of the ways we try to progress people is by hiring representatives and journalists who know about all styles of dance and can help grow their communities. We are proud to announce the bringing on of Kiana Brown, a journalism student and intern with us! She dances with Emanon Dance Crew (Oxnard, Calif) and is the older sister to Miles aka Baby Boogaloo. She brings a set of fresh ideas to add to our website and her first story is a review of the workshop with Les Twins this last weekend. Welcome Kiana and enjoy!

“I came in here thinking that it was going to just be a hard-core, long, and sweaty workshop but after everything happened I realized that it was a learning and growing experience, not just as dancers, but as a people,” stated Jadelyn Raza.

On February 2 2013, the international dynamic dance duo Larry and Laurent Bourgeois, also known as Les Twins, blessed the small town Oxnard, California by instructing a workshop.

The two hour workshop was hosted by the junior dance team Emanon Dance Company and Step x Step Dance at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

It consisted of learning how to listen and feel the music so that you may transfer that energy into dance.

They were a prime example of their teachings by not teaching a few simple eight counts but by choosing a random song on their ipod and listening to the beats and the groove of it to jam out some moves and teach them to those that were in attendance.

Twin Lau said, “Every step you take, every move you make, you got to make love to it. You have to feel and love the steps and the music. Make love to your dance. Love your dance. I could be here all day and teach you a lot of moves but until you start feeling the steps and listening to the music will you be able to enjoy yourself and dance!”

They split up the dancers into two different groups and each twin instructed one group.

They were beyond insistent on the fact that you had to learn how to listen and feel the music and make it your own.

“Every workshop, they teach different ways and they encourage you to expand in your dancing, and to use your heart, and use different dynamics. You always learn different techniques. They always encourage you to do better,” said a spectator from the workshop.

Les Twins have competed in events such as World of Dance, Battle of the Stylez, Urban Dance Showcase, and Juste Debout.

They are well-known for their performances with Beyoncé Knowles and Missy Elliot and have traveled with the “Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour.”

Having such experienced and talented dancers under the same roof was an amazing experience to some of the members of Emanon Dance Crew.

“To have the privilege to learn from them is monumental in the city of Oxnard,” revealed Felicia Holland, member of Emanon Dance Company, “When do we ever get people this amazing to come and teach us and how many people here in California get the opportunity to learn from them?”

So many dancers were anxious and excited to get the workshop started before the twins arrived.

Jamieboy Avecilla said, “I don’t know what to expect right now. No seriously. I’m excited to learn their styles because it’s like nothing I have ever seen before. It’s crazy.”

Expectations were set high for the well-known choreographers that day as Marinayy Hinahon of Emanon stated, “I expect craziness, fun, and inspiration!”

Sure enough the workshop was like no other.

The energy in that room throughout the workshop and the satisfied and ecstatic smiles on people’s faces after said it all.

Honoring this workshop, Emanon’s alumni Vincent Solis admitted, “It’s blessed to have them down here in Oxnard. To have something like this, it’s just different for us and we’re just all really lucky to have them here.”

Raza added, “To be honest, it was one of those experiences where you know you learn from it. It was just amazing.”

Emanon Dance Company and Step x Step Dance were so grateful to have had the honor in hosting the workshop and thanked everyone that was involved in making it happen.

Both strive to emphasize the importance of teaching the next generation the foundations of hip hop and Les Twins contributed to that movement.

Twin Lau could not have said it better than by saying, “You are the next generation. No. We are the next generation together.”
