It’ll be her first show since canceling a string of scheduled performances this past summer. The show’s other high profile headliner is former Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean. It’s always a thrill to hear Ms. Hill is back on stage, but the days of hoping for a Fugees reunion are over, don’t you think?

My first introduction to this song was through its pounding bass line. It’s not a bass line yo

My first introduction to this song was through its pounding bass line. It’s not a bass line you automatically think of as pounding, but during my senior year in college, when my neighbor played it at top volume over and over and over … and over again, that’s what filled my space and my head. Boomp. Ba boomp booooom boomp. Ba boomp booooom boomp.

I was intrigued and annoyed at the same time. Obviously I wanted to be able to control my own sound environment. But I also really liked the base line. Eventually I heard the song it accompanied, whether through the wall or through her open door I don’t recall. And oh, a love was born.

“Killing Me Softly” ranks right up there on my all-time best lists: Best Remakes. Best Belt Out in the Car Songs (right behind “Greatest Love of All” and “We Are the Champions”). Best Hear Through a Wall Songs. Just Best, Best, Best. I cranked it this morning and sang along with all of Lauryn Hill’s ohs and ahs and ah-ah-ah-ah-ahs.

From everything I’ve read, Lauryn seems to be a bit of a nut. Like, to the point where her nearest and dearest Fugees and others worry about her. But man, the woman could sing.

Sorry folks for the delay. LiLi is back and I promise not to disappoint you all again! I had some

Sorry folks for the delay. LiLi is back and I promise not to disappoint you all again! I had some…er…uh…technical difficulties that caused a lack of internet service, lol. It was nothing personal. Nevertheless ya girl is back and I have a lot to say and will be sharing more often.

I don’t want to talk about anything celebrity-related (unless it’s comical or void of negativity) and I’m no longer holding back my transparent feelings aside from the soap-box rants. Those are good at times because I love you and will share what I know has worked for me but I would never force anything on you. God’s free will is just that!

So here’s what’s on my heart as of late. Yesterday I let go of something that was a crutch of mine since April 4th, 2009. Yep, I remember when the “trap” was presented to me and when I fell jumped in, enthusiastically accepting what I thought would be a fun, harmful fling. I thought I could be casual. I thought I had enough gumption to sustain catching any feelings that were out-of-pocket for what I could handle. Yeah right! Now I know it takes a ‘big girl’ to realize what she can’t handle along with what she can. What is this you couldn’t handle, Li? A man. I would refer to him as “kryptonite” simply because he weakened me. But I allowed him to.

You can sing “Independent Women” until you’re heart’s content, boast about making your own money, paying your bills and buying your own drinks (or bottles if you got it like that). But just as Kanye spoke: On that independent sh–, trade it all for a husband and some kids. Mmm Hmm…that’s all it takes is a man who has the right amount of [insert word other than "swag" here] to knock Ms. Independent off her pedestal. Oh, and this battleship sank low- lower than I even thought I would tolerate. I seriously had to question if I had a grasp of the concept of self-esteem after I weened myself off of the purple kool-aid.

There were many deal-breakers and red flags in the beginning so I knew he wasn’t husband-material, but I thought I would still “proceed with caution”. Girl BYE! I should have taken the detour instead. I got lost to a point where I couldn’t even turn around. I didn’t want to turn around at that point because I was too deep in. Thank God for His divine GPS that eventually led me away…as of yesterday! It was abrupt and seriously painful because I let my guard down with him in ways I never had with any other man. He broke down my barriers and I compromised on so many different levels-intimately, spiritually, emotionally…it wasn’t cute.

Now it’s day two. Day one was full of tears and a lack of food consumption (and y’all KNOW this lil’ thang don’t push no food to the side!) This morning I had problems eating but my tummy is growling now so I think my body is like, “Look here chick”, at this moment! LOL! I’m going to be in my withdrawal stage for a while. When you go from basically living with someone to cold turkey it’s not gonna be a pretty site. But I’m too cute to be balled-up in a corner shakin’ like “Pooky” in New Jack City!

I can never go through anything and keep it to myself. I wear my heart and my emotions on my sleeve like badges of honor (good and bad thing, given the situation). So my BBM status was all jacked up with broken hearts and sad faces which drew a good friend of mine to my rescue. After I explained everything to her without developing arthritis of the thumbs, I realized that I remembered the exact day I met “kryptonite”. I said to her, “[blank] has been my trap since April…April 4th to be exact. Funny how I remember the day I fell…”

She replies, “Well remember this day…the day you got up!”

Duly noted.

This one is really for myself, but I wanted to post it because hey, why not. The video is a crap ton of pictures of friends and me doing random things in California. The video is longer than I wanted, so I may try and re-do this when I’m bored sometime (I did this while watching football games).

Wycelf Jean and Lauryn Hilll have been added to a lineup of entertainers scheduled to perform at Australia and New Zealand’s “Raggamuffin Festival.”

The festival come to inception two years ago and encompasses reggae, dub, hip-hop and soul music. Scheduled to take place in January in 2010, the lineup for the program is extensive ranging from Sean Kingston and Shaggy to Julian Marley, Sly & Robbie, Steel Pulse and Blue King Brown.

Wyclef and Lauryn will perform in Rotorua, New Zealand at the Rotura International Stadium on January 23rd, 2010.

Even though they won’t be performing together, the thought of seeing 2/3 of the Fugees in one night is pretty exciting.

Sooo who wants to fly me out to Australia for this?!

Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill will appear on the same stage for separate performances during the Raggamuffin Music Festival, which will take place in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill will be co-headliners of the festival, which takes place at Rotorua International Stadium and also features headliners Shaggy, Julian Marley, Sly & Robbie, Sean Kingston and others.

The pair’s performance together comes amidst new reports that Wyclef Jean was hoping for a Fugee’s reunion.

“Some how, The Fugees is the soundtrack to everyone’s house,” Wyclef told DJBooth.net. “What I’m hoping is that this group really gets inspired by the new movement that I’m on right now.

“I’m hoping they’ll get inspired and be like, ‘Yo, let’s find Clef and let’s get this thing cracking.’ And it would be an honor to go in and make it a super album,” Clef said of reuniting with Hill and group member Pras Michele.

The announcement of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill’s involvement in the Raggamuffin Festival is the singer’s first major outing since canceling a string of high profile dates in June of 2009.

Hill had been scheduled to headline the Stockholm Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

Wyclef filled in for Hill on a number of the cancelled dates, which she canceled due to health reasons.

As members of The Fugees, Wyclef, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michele released two albums including 1996’s The Score, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill will perform during the Raggamuffin Music Festival in Rotorua, New Zealand on January 23rd, 2010.

Recently I saw the PBS special “Latin Music USA!” which was a great series on the origin

Recently I saw the PBS special “Latin Music USA!” which was a great series on the origins and influences of the diverse styles of Latin Music in the United States. The episodes covering New York City got me reminiscing about my time living there in the mid 1990s. When I moved there in my early 20s for graduate school, it was an overwhelmingly awesome culture shock for this California girl. To be dropped into Washington Heights (Quisqueya Heights if you know) was an mind bending experience. I started a sonic journey into the music of Nueva York ~ fueled by a desire to learn more about my own Latin heritage as well as love of culture and of my Caribbean brothers and sisters.

I love to dance and hit up everywhere from Copacabana and Latin Quarters to the down home clubs in the Boogie Down Bronx and Brooklyn. I saw some amazing bands play live including El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico and Marc Anthony. He hadn’t yet hit the mainstream audiences, but was selling out clubs performing salsa music. Anyhow, I can’t even begin to do justice to the enormity of the music which has come out of New York; all I can do is try to capture a slice of the New York I experienced, the one that lives in my memory.

“Calle Luna Calle Sol” is a Willie Colon song with Hector Lavoe on vocals from the mid 70s. This style of salsa dura chronicled street life and social problems found in the inner cities. Translated they say “listen to me, in this barrio many have been killed; so take out your knife and be careful.”

“Lejos De Ti” by Angeles Canales talks about how much he loves New York, but will never forget his beautiful island of Puerto Rico. I recall listening to this song during the Puerto Rican Day Parade broadcast on 97.9 La Mega. What a mix of music ~ I actually taped (remember that?!) the radio that whole day. This version is poignant as his audience sings the entire first verse which leads Angel to get emotional.

Venezuelan bass player and sonero Oscar D’Leon’s “Lloraras” is a classic about heartbreak and karma. To this day, this song will get me on the dance floor:

Living in Quisqueya (the native name of the island of Dominican Republic) Heights, merengue was ubiquitous as well as bachata. Grupo Mania was huge during the mid to late 90s. Here is “Ojitos Bellos:”

This song by Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez and Johnny Pacheco really represents the style of salsa I fell in love with in New York. Most likely I’ll do another post digging even deeper into the clave, salsa dura, Fania All-Stars, and boogaloo/Latin Soul. But for now, enjoy “Sonero”:

I really wanted to post Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez’ version of “Esos Tus Ojos Negros” but I couldn’t find his salsa version online. I did find what I think may be the original, a bolero from Colombia by Oscar Agudelo. It’s the same song but done in a much different style. I hope you enjoy as I did:

My boyfriend at the time put this next song on a mixtape he made me. I learned more from living life to the fullest in New York than I did in grad school. With all the romance, music, and dancing there wasn’t much time left for my studies! The lovely Lauryn Hill with “The Sweetest Thing:”

I also listened to some hard-core hip hop while living in one of the toughest cities in the countries. Here is Smif N Wessun with their Jamaican influenced “Sound Bwoy Bureil”:

New York City~ Washington Heights, Manhattan. San Gennaro Festival. Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Cafe Wha? The Red Train. The Roxy. Copacabana. Habichuelas. Tostones. Pasteles. Boriqua. First real love. Youth & innocence left behind on the subway lines.

From A Lower Eastside Poem:

Just once before I die
I want to climb up on a
tenement sky
to dream my lungs out till
I cry
then scatter my ashes thru
the Lower East Side.

So let me sing my song tonight
let me feel out of sight
and let all eyes be dry
when they scatter my ashes thru
the Lower East Side.

I don’t wanna be buried in Puerto Rico
I don’t wanna rest in long island cemetery
I wanna be near the stabbing shooting
gambling fighting & unnatural dying
& new birth crying
so please when I die . . .
don’t take me far away
keep me near by
take my ashes and scatter them thru out
the Lower East Side . . .

Bonus Footage: I was trying to find a clip of what I thought was Jean Grae for like two years. I heard this girl rapping on interludes for 9th Wonder’s 2007 Dream Merchant II. The only female emcee associated with him, or so I thought at the time, was Jean Grae so I just assumed it was her. In the process of looking for this clip I learned that it was not Jean Grae. It was in fact a female emcee named Rapsody. You learn something new everyday. Please enjoy and pay thorough attention to the second clip…9th Wonder is a beast, but Rapsody’s voice just….well watch it.

She has a debut limited edition EP entitled, Sleep On Fire, which was released earlier this summer to which she has followed up with some touring, supporting The Antlers. Now with the release of this week’s Forest Green Oh Forest Green 7″ single, which is bundled with a Yoko Ono cover of, “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do” as the b side, she is on tour with Friendly Fires and The xx. If you are lucky enough to be in Seattle tonight, the triplet of great bands are playing at Neumo’s.

Holly has also announced a full length album, will drop on February 23 of next year

Common and John Legend are two artists I highly appreciate. On one side Common with his unique voice and very comfortable to hear flow and on the other side John Legend with his undenieable skills as piano player and songwriter.

Now they both teamed up for the song Strange Fruit which contains a Nina Simone sample – very nice !

Lonnie Rashid Lynn on his side is a well known rapper and actor, famous for appearances in movies like Smokin’ Aces, American Gangster, Wanted, Street Kings and Terminator Salvation.

I especially appreciate him for his Finding Forever album, but he is also recognizable for his Soulquarian area music.

John Legend, real name John Stephens, has played piano for Lauryn Hill’s Everything is Everything; has led his voice for diverse Kanye tracks and has won several Grammys.

Common Feat. John Legend – Strange Fruit

Rich Boy a.k.a. Maurice Richards is most known for his hit Throw Some D’s but I appreciate him for the hole album Rich Boy.

He was discovered by mega producer Polow Da Don and is also signed on his imprint Zone 4. He is about to release his next album in 2010, named Buried Alive.

Richard Butler, also known as Rico Love, is signed on Usher’s label US Records .He has written lyrics for artists like Flo Rida, Taeira Marie, The Pussycat Dolls, Cassie, Natasha Bedingfield, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, Donell Jones etc.

I’ve been meaning to post this for a minute, but this annoying thing called real life got in the way of blogging right quick.

I got this mix in my inbox last week and I’ve been bumping it steadily ever since.

Remix crew Keys N Krates, comprised of DJ Jr Flo, keyboardist Matisse & drummer Adam Tune, flip some classic hip-hop records for an organic, real-time podcast called Live Re-Mixing 101 presented by Urb Magazine.

Listen as Matisse reinterprets Just Blaze’s instantly-recognizable melody from Jay-Z’s “Public Service Annoucement.” Also, hear Jr Flo scratch the Aretha Franklin sample from Mos Def’s “Miss Fat Booty” and Lauryn Hill’s eloquent vocals from “Fu Ge La” float smoothly over Tune’s live drums. Definitely ain’t no fakin’ the funk on this one!

I highly recommend turning the volume up and letting this half-hour podcast mix rock. Whether you’re in the whip or at the crib with your peoples, I’ll bet my bottom dollar this impresses.

To find out more about Keys N Krates, hit up KeysNCrates.com or their blog.

Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity. (g.k. chesterton) i know what you’re thinking:

Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity. (g.k. chesterton)

i know what you’re thinking: these are words coming from a man who died in 1936. what does he know? okay, maybe that’s not what you were thinking. if it was, i love you. if it wasn’t, let’s pretend it was so i can still love you.

language is fluid. fiction in 1936 was most likely restricted to stories orated or told on pages; in 2009 fiction means something else entirely.

i was having a conversation with someone yesterday, and she was expressing her frustrations with two apartment mates – nothing peculiar about that. what did strike me as curious, however, was when she explained the reason she was frustrated with them.

they watch disney channel. they like it. they’re naive.

she was essentially hating on them because, in her mind, grown adults should not enjoy things that are meant to be enjoyed by children. i was so upset. but in reaching beyond my emotional response to her mistaken beliefs, i realized that she actually had something profound to say.

that is, in 2009, fiction is naive. it isn’t by accident that reality television dominates the schedules of every major and minor network on the air. on mtv unplugged, lauryn hill once famously said “fantasy is what people want, but reality is what they need.” we live in an age of skepticism.

i have to give it to lauryn – she’s right. a lot of people are in such denial of the circumstances that are in front of them that they refuse to accept it as reality. they ignore real life by embracing fantasy.

but doesn’t this denial include everyone? films, clubs, campuses, the list goes on (music, ms. hill?). perhaps we have immersed ourselves so deeply in fantasy that we cannot tell the difference anymore…like fish describing water.

(disclaimer: things are about to get abstract)

and that’s precisely the point. we don’t know that we’re drowning in fantasy because it has become the very thing that sustains us. it has become a necessity. and that certainly did not happen by accident. in crying out, “give me reality or give me death”, we are left with fantasy after all. reality television is phony yet people talk about the characters and situations as if they’re real. and these are the same people that tell adults not to watch disney channel.

Fairy tales, are more than true. Not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be defeated. (chesterton)

Hva har Ole Paus, Dagblad-journalist Terje Mosnes, hiphopgruppa Fugees, Inger Lise Rypdal og Arne Be

Hva har Ole Paus, Dagblad-journalist Terje Mosnes, hiphopgruppa Fugees, Inger Lise Rypdal og Arne Bendiksen til felles? 1996s store slager, «Killing Me Softly», er et hett stikkord her.

Spor 4: Tekstoversetter nr. 1

Ny telefon, til Kari Diesen.

– Cola, softis og pizza? undrer Kari Diesen.

– Det har jeg aldri hørt om. Lauryn Hill i Fugees synger fint, men Roberta Flacks versjon går rett inn.

– Men hvem skrev du teksten for? Kari Diesen hevder at hun skrev for Ellen Nikolaysen.

Spor 7: Inger Lise Rypdal

Spor 8: NRKs musikkguruer

Melodien vekker nostalgi hos lytteren, mens rytmene oppdaterer melodien for 1990-tallet.

Oh baby . . .

Etter . .

(Refreng)
Cola og softis og pizza
Cola og softis og pizza
Cola og softis og pizza
Cola og softis og pizza
Cola og softis og pizza
Cola og softis
Og pizza

I fjor høst på denne tiden
Var det Siv ble kvalm
Og fikk vondt i siden
Doktoren sa at hun var gravid
Han het dr. Werner
Uuuuuuu
Da flyttet Siv og Vivi i hop
Og Siv og Vivi delte bo
Og Siv og Vivi visste begge to
Godt hvem faren er
Så kom fødselen, på med fjøra
Ned på klinikken og opp med døra
Da ble dr. Werner heit om øra
Det va’kke noe barn der

Oh baby . .

Det var bare . . .

Cola og softis og pizza
Cola og softis og pizza
Osv.

So I’m in the middle of a bit of a dryspell right now. And for the first time in a long time,

So I’m in the middle of a bit of a dryspell right now. And for the first time in a long time, I actually miss having a girlfriend. So like any good American, when i get lonely, instead of goin’ out and meeting some people, I’ve decided to simply fantasize celebrities.

So here I present to you the 5 women I hope to meet someday soon (maybe I already have), that I expect will serve as the milestones of my relationship future, represented my some of my all time favorite female musicians.

The Best Friend: Alicia Keys

Me and Alicia go way back. We’ve known each other pretty much our whole lives and helped each other through tough times. See Alicia’s a down ass chick. She’s one of those girls that you can just chill with and talk to. Really be yourself around. So we’d just chill and go see a shitty movie and make fun of it, or stop at the bar and watch the game. We’d complain about our respective significant others, or argue about the latest hip hop releases. She was basically one of the dudes, who happened to be cute. She was just that cool.

People at times would ask why we weren’t together, but that was a ridiculous suggestion. She was like my sister. And honestly at times I wondered if she even really liked dudes. She would just find herself in failed relationship after failed relationship. She had a talent for picking losers, and as much as she was one of the guys sometimes you had to wonder, if she wasn’t better off with a chick. But it never actually occurred to me that I may have been the guy she was looking for.

The Ex: Sarah McLachlan

Alicia was the main woman in my life as a ran through a series of meaningless chicks. Then I met Sarah. She was nothing like any woman I’d ever met before. She was elegant, caring, almost mystical, an Angel walking on earth. Her grace was something I’d never come across in a woman before. We were both artists, so we hit it off immediately. We would stay up nights lying together and just talk. Not cracking jokes like Alicia and I, talking about real things: Philosophy, religion, the world and the people in it. I had never met anyone with such a conscientiousness for others, or a comparable depth of spirit. So of course I married her. You don’t meet a woman like that twice in a lifetime.

It didn’t last though. Because what I didn’t realize, is that Sarah was fuckin’ crazy. She was seriously depressed, hung up on a lot issues she has no control over. The bigger problem was though, that she didn’t wanna get better. It was as if that despair seemed to fuel her creativity, and she quite comfortably wallowed in it. I slowly realized that that grace that i had become so smitten with was really quiet sorrow, and it made her impossible to live with.

The Mistress: Beyonce

I couldn’t leave Sarah though. It seemed as if I was the only thing that was holding her up from completely collapsing into her own insecurities. So I did what I thought I’d never do. I stepped out on her. Beyonce was everything that Sarah wasn’t. She was fun, vibrant, full of life, and she approached every aspect of life with a strength that Sarah could only find in her own sadness. Sure she didn’t have the intellectual or emotional depth that Sarah had, but you know… she was a dancer. The sex was ridiculous. We’d lock ourselves in a hotel room for days. Days.

Sarah never found out. But in the end sex wasn’t enough to sustain the affair. I grew bored with her, and she with me. Honestly, I don’t think I was the only guy she was giving the time of their life to on a regular basis anyway. We amicably called it off. I didn’t return to Sarah though, that had run it’s course as well. I asked for a divorce, she didn’t take it well. We don’t speak any longer.

The Wife: Norah Jones

So I was single again, and I decided I needed to put myself out there. And one night in a smoky coffee shop, I met the one. She was as cool and laid back as Alicia, but with the depth and grace of Sarah. She was as fun and sexy as Beyonce, but had a smoldering sensuality that no woman I had met before could match. It was the voice. That voice that sounded like the wind passing through autumn leaves. I had to have her, but she played it cool. She joked with me, and made me chase her. It might have annoyed me if she wasn’t actually funny. Finally I had her. We’ve been together ever since.

Norah and I have three children together, a boy and two little daddy’s girls that look just like her. We’ve grown old and fat together, but of course we still know how to turn each other on. It’s a quiet simple life, but we still find little adventures in it, like getting everyone to school on time. Honeslty, nothing could be better.

The Goddess: Lauryn Hill

Me and Norah have been together for years now and I would never dream of cheating on her. And there are no secrets between us, except for one. There’s another woman. I’ve only met her once, and we’ve only shaken hands but ever since that moment she’s had my heart. Now I love Norah with all my heart, and I would never leave her. What I feel for this other woman is beyond love, it’s reverance.

I met the stunning Lauryn through a mutual friend, at a function where she was asked to say a few words. The intelligence and bravery of her statements were alarming, but her singing was heartbreaking. It was if she spoke for the pain of everyone, myself included. I’ve never seen her since then, but I collect news clippings and bookmark web hits on any information on her. Yeah it’s kind of stalker-ish, but I can’t help it. She’ s amazing. We would never work, love can’t be based upon worship and I get the feeling that she’s a little too conscious of how absolutely brilliant she is. And what me and Norah have is already perfect, but that doesn’t mean I can just let the thought of Lauryn go. So she’s remained my little secret, the other love of my life.

(That’s right. Even in my fantasies I fantasize about Lauryn Hill. I can’t even begin to comprehend what she could be like in real life, she’s so brilliant.)
