Yes, we’ve all been waiting for it to come around for the last five days.  If you’re like me, you were Tweeting drink recipes on Monday hoping, wishing that it would make that beautiful glorious day  we call Saturday (or Friday at 5 pm) show it’s shining face that much quicker. AND…. if you’re in the United States like me, you’re relishing in having an extra day.  What president were we celebrating on Monday?  Benjamin Franklin?

Anyway, I’m very excited today because Steve and I are making our annual pilgrimage to the mecca of California modernist design.  Palm Springs is one of my favorite Southern California hot spots.  Not just because of the awesome lemonade they serve at The Parker (I can’t tell you how many of those I’ve had… in the same day) or because there are always great little boutiques along the main drag that are a designer’s wet dream (there is probably more vintage Knoll there anywhere), but because of all the modernist architecture.

Wexler.  Kaufman. Lautner. The names read like a who’s who of architectural royalty.  Sure there are great examples of their designs in not-very-far-away Los Angeles but Palm Springs was their playground.  Palm Springs was the place they could let down their proverbial hair and put their pencil to vellum.  Not to mention, if you, as a homeowner, built anything other than a modernist you were just not cool.  Like so not cool that Sinatra would probably bar you from coming to whatever lounge he was singing at that night.

And no one likes to piss off Sinatra.

Ok ok… enough with me rambling on and on.  Because I’m ready to get in the car and head out I’m just going to leave you with a few photos.  But not just any photos.  Pool Photos!  For those in East – remember, just a few more months of snow.  For those here in the west – meet you poolside!

Cool Cactus!

Today was fun.  We decided to go hiking and checked the web for trail options.  We thought of going to the Tahquitz Canyon (

) but they do not allow DOGS!!  Plus they charge to hike.  Come on, man!!!  Forget that.

So we decided to hike on the Araby Trail (

) that goes right by Bob Hope’s mushroom looking house in Palm Springs.  Dogs allowed!  And it is free!!  So off we went.

) house.  Very cool.  The house is 17,531 square feet and has 6 bedrooms and 9+ baths.  It was built in 1979 by architect, John Lautner (

).  Word is that Bob only used the house for entertaining and didn’t actually live there.  Not that I got inside.  The house is actually in a gated community.  The Araby trail goes right by it and then above it.

 At the top we stopped for lunch and a drink of water.  I did not feel so well and puked.  I think I over did it on the hike.  I also had stickers and all kinds of sticks stuck to me EVERYWHERE (if you get my drift).  Mom and dad picked out the stickers and we began our descent.  I also got very dusty – too bad ’cause I just had a bath the other day!

 

After that we did some chores (boring….) and came home.  Now we are just chilling by the television.  Not sure what tomorrow holds.  I am very, very, very tired and going to sleep!!!

PEORIA  - The latest movie in the popular ‘Twilight’ franchise is reportedly triggering brain seizures in audiences across the country.

Tyler Zane and Rebecca Stephenson were watching “Breaking Dawn: Part One” at a theater Friday night when Tyler sudden began convulsing, screaming and vomiting during a graphic birthing scene.

Tyler said he doesn’t remember anything until he woke up on the theater floor, but Rebecca said he was, “convulsing, snorting, and yelling Kiss Me Kristen over and over again.”

“He scared me big time,” she added. Paramedics transported the man to the emergency room and the theater had to cancel the rest of the movie for that showing.  That caused a riot in the theatre, but at least everyone’s brain was safe.

Thousands of posts on internet movie sites show are reporting similar cases in which people have brain seizures during the same scene, which contains flashes of red, black and white.  Dr. Charles Osmond, the medical director of teen neurology at Tucson’s Brain Institute, said these reports indicate the scene may be triggering an episode of photosensitive epilepsy or Twilight-itis.

A similar reaction happened in the 1990s with the television show Pokémon, which triggered seizures in children (and parents).

What can parents do?  Don’t let them  teens go to Twilight movies?  ”Well, if they do go to the see movie, have them bring a tin foil hat.  Tin foil near the brain is effective in keeping it calm and cool.”

Thirty seconds in and Taylor Lautner rips of his shirt as his character Jacob Black receives an invitation to the wedding of his rival Edward Cullen with his dreamgirl Bella Swan. As any man does in moments of great distress. Well, at least any man with a sixpack like Lautner. Thirty minutes in, and Cullen (Robert Pattinson aka The Hair) and Swan (Kristen Stewart aka The Bore) are hitched and off to their honeymoon. And then: nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Sure, they finally have sex, after three films and a half, and that even produces some decent jokes. But seriously: nothing really happens for an hour. Only in the last half hour the plot and the pace pick up and the film becomes a wee bit interesting, but the moment that it does, the film is over. It has taken two hours to not do that much at all and then stop the moment things get mildly interesting.

Why interesting? Well, actually only because of the developments in the character of Jacob Black. Whereas Cullen and Swan are boring to the level of 0 degrees Kelvin, Black has to struggle with his feelings for Swan, his anger and his loyalty to his family. It is a pity that the actor Taylor Lautner is an absolute talent vacuum. Anyone with some sense of dramatic expression could use the character of Jacob to lift the level of the entire film. Sadly, Lautner, despite all the muscles he is flexing, cannot carry that weight.

As a phenomenon, Twilight is huge. And big. As a film franchise: Meeh. Not really. The first film was interesting enough, but the second film was boring and the third one a mess. And this one is a blatant insult. There is absolutely no need, from any dramatic or artistic point of view, to do a “Deathly Hallows” and split the fourth book in a fourth and a fifth film. The only justification is greed. Greed for the money in the pockets of the teenage girls, their parents and their hapless and powerless boyfriends. There is absolutely no potential here, in terms of story, for two films.

Breaking Dawn part I cannot be understood as a stand alone film. You want to go in without ever having seen a second of Twilight before? Don’t. You’ll be infuriatingly bored and annoyed. So with little to nothing happening, inexplicable plot twists, cardboard characters and beautiful locations, the Twilight series has by now reached the meagre level of soap opera with production value.

Not that this will in any way stop Breaking dawn part I from being a huge popular success of course.

By the way, this may be the moment to say to those who do not know yet that Jacob is a werewolf. And Edward is a vampire. And Bella is a swan. Oh no, forget the latter part.
