Oh man are we excited!  DVR Life has been a die-hard Law & Order fan since our wee middle school days.  Not sure why the show mesmerized our 11 year old minds, but it did.  Here we are now, 18 years later and still fans!  That’s right!  With Law & Order returning for it’s 20th season, we can’t claim to have been there since the beginning, but not many folks out there can.

While we have been there since the beginning for both Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, we have always enjoyed the original just a smidge more.  There’s nothing else quite like the real Law & Order for us, so we’re stoked to check out the first murder of the new season.  We’re also pretty glad we don’t have to wait all the way until January for a new season like we did last year.

Law & Order returns for it’s twentieth season on Friday, September 25th at 8pm.

There’s been a few bits of news floating around the last couple of days about Law & Order: Criminal Intent.  First off, the series has been renewed by it’s adoptive home, USA, for a ninth season.  The official L&O: CI twitter acct posted this:

No surprise there as USA, like many cable networks, like to stretch their original series out.  Most premiere half the season in late spring or summer, then again in January or so.  It tends to be a bummer when the short season ends, but it’s nice knowing that, instead of having to wait a full year, like some shows, there’s more coming in just a few months.

Other than the renewal, the other news floating aroung, which has yet to be confirmed, is about casting.  Unconfirmed reports from Ausiello are that Julianne Nicholson, who ended last season with a birth, will not be returning post-partum.  Instead, the rumor mill has pegged My Own Worst Enemy’s Saffron Burrows as a possible partner for Jeff Goldblum.

We admit to being a bit sad by this news.  Nicholson was a great addition to the cast, especially when paired up with Goldblum.  Ausiello also reports that Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe are in talks to return for the next season.  Regarding all these rumors, the L&O: CI twitter account only had one thing to say:

Law & Order: Criminal Intent is tentatively set to return in March 2010 on USA.

I don’t think my father has been that happy with Mediacom since he and my mother switched to their digital cable/Internet/telephone package. As far back as three years ago, he’s been threatening to find another provider. Dad and I even paid a visit to the Qwest store in Lindale Mall to consider DirecTV. In the end, we stayed with Mediacom.

We stayed with them even as they pulled the station I had been working for off its channel lineup due to a carriage dispute with the station’s parent company. That dispute was settled just 48 hours before the Super Bowl was to air on CBS, the network my station had affiliated with. We stayed with them when they had a carriage dispute with the Big Ten Network, the channel that replaced the syndicated package that allowed Iowa games not picked up by ABC, CBS or ESPN to air on local TV. For the entire 2007-2008 season, the BTN did not exist, at least on Mediacom.

But the straw that broke the camel’s back was when Mediacom raised it rates this summer. Dad decided it was time to switch to ImOn. They sent a guy over yesterday to set us up. Moving to another cable provider is a good-news, bad-news situation for me.

First, the bad news: ImOn does not have USA Network in high-definition. One show I like to watch is “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”, which now airs on USA. The ImOn switch means I have to go back to watching CI in standard def. The series just wrapped up its eighth season a few weeks ago, so it will be a while before the ninth season begins. Maybe by then, they’ll have added USA HD.

Now for the good news: ImOn has just added the NFL Network, both in standard and high-definition. I was watching for a little bit last night. The analysts on their studio show said Todd Haley, who coaches my favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs, will win six games in his first year at the helm. That’s a prediction I actually like after seeing them win a total of six games in two years.

There’s no NFL Sunday Ticket (you can only get that on DirecTV), but you will get to see late-season games on the channel. I don’t see any that stick out at me as that intriguing, the closest would be the Cowboys taking on the Saints Dec. 19. That could have playoff implications there.

The installer told me ImOn is the first in the state of Iowa to get NFL Network. Not to burst his bubble, but that is incorrect. South Slope Cooperative, based a few miles away in North Liberty, got the channel before ImOn did. Still, the addition of the NFL Network combined with Mediacom’s rate hike could be enough to get football fans in the Cedar Rapids area on the phone with ImOn. Are you ready for some football? I know I am.

Well, it’s Sunday and the end of the week.  There is still a lot to do in my life because of one more event coming up this week for the Binghamton FanForce and I’m hoping that the group will slow down for a little bit.  It’s not that I don’t like doing the events, it’s just hard when the events are one on top of the other on top of the other.  The good news is that the group is getting some public exposure.  That’s good in the long run.  Anyway, Heather and I got up late this morning because we decided that since we had such a long week, we would not go to church this morning.   That was nice because it gave us time to be together as a family.  We ate some breakfast together and then watched an episode of “Star Trek:  The Next Generation”.  Heather and I then decided to go out and take care of some things.

We headed to Wendy’s and got my schedule for next week.  I got my schedule and am a little upset because I’m scheduled on Tuesday when I was supposed to have the day off.  I’ll have to talk to the manager tomorrow about it.  I had called in and talked to him about the date, but I think he just forgot.  I can’t work on Tuesday because I’ll be at the Discovery Center with the Binghamton FanForce.  We left Wendy’s and went to “Radio Shack” to get some parts to make some bits in my house come to life.  We then headed to “Giant” and got some ice cream for desert tonight and then went home.  We got home and ate lunch together.  Heather took a nap while I played “Call of Duty 4″.  I played most of the afternoon and FINALLY got the gold shotgun!  Yes!  Now all I need to do is get the gold AK-47 and then I would be a very happy man on that game!  I got that done just in time to have some dinner with the family. In the meantime, Heather had taken Ruth to the church where she is going to help the youth group get ready for Vacation Bible School at the Chenango Bridge United Methodist Church this week.

We then got into the after dinner hours and Heather and I watched “‘Till Death” and “American Dad” and then Heather picked up Ruth and we watched “Big Brother”, “Law and Order:  Criminal Intent”, and then “Hung” on HBO and then went to bed.

Okay, so let’s talk about Part 1 of Chapter 77 of “Star Wars:  The Cestus Deception, A Clone Wars Novel” by Steven Barnes……Chapter 77 (Part 1):  Just after the “Nexu” fired her primary weapon, the target became scorched earth.  the shot that should’ve taken out Clandes now shook the whole Kibo plateau.  There were no fatalaties.  In Clandes a few walls cracked and an alarm rang out.  In Chikatlik, there was a more immediate affect…..

Lot’s going on at USA headquarters this week!  They’re newest upcoming series, White Collar, was given a premiere date, both high performing Royal Pains and Burn Notice were renewed, and longtime hits Monk and Psych are returning this week, Monk for it’s eighth and final season.

What could we possibly add to that?  The renewal of In Plain Sight, thankfully, and word that negotiations for a ninth season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent should be ending soon on a positive note.  Oh, and they released a pretty hefty production slate at their Television Critics Association panel yesterday in Pasadena, Ca.  Whew.

The renewal of In Plain Sight comes as no surprise, of course.  It has a rather good, reliable draw of 5 million viewers each Sunday evening, critical praise and a caring fan base.  Pretty much what all USA original series seem to enjoy.  I guess that’s what happens when a network secures talented writers, producers, showrunners, actors, etc.  You know, what all networks, broadcast, cable and premium, should be doing at all times.

An added bonus?  Lead actress Mary McCormack, a ruler in her own right, is oft-surrounded by one hell of a cast, including regulars Nicole Hiltz as her ditsy but charmingly sweet younger sister and Fred Weller as weird as all get out but awesome as heck Marshall Mann.  We also get treated to such The West Wing alum as Richard Schiff and Joshua Malina.

The order for In Plain Sight’s third season includes a total of 16 episodes.  No official word, but we suspect another springtime premiere date as this year’s May launch seemed to work well.

In Plain Sight’s second season continues each Sunday evening at 10pm on USA until it’s season finale August 16th.

Apparently, I was not alone in being disappointed that Law and Order: Criminal Intent did not materialize Monday night at 9 on CTV.

Despite repeated promos advertising the show’s move from Saturdays to Mondays at 9 p.m., that slot was filled by Criminal Minds.

Reader Philip was also unamused and writes in an email to The Box: “I am a big fan of the Law and Order series. I appreciate it much more than the CSI series. Anyways, I was really thrilled about having new Law and Order episodes this summer with CI and was enjoying the ones I had seen. Then last week they announced that it was to move from its Sunday berth to a new Monday slot to accomodate some move of the week. So tonight I was looking forward to the episode that they were advertising up to Sunday Night/Monday Morning. I get ready to sit on the couch and then what do I see. They have replaced L&O CI with another repeat of Criminal Minds which I am not a fan of, and it doesn’t even look like they are playing CI in the next few weeks. What’s going on? … Why does CTV DO THIS?”

I put the question to CTV and the response only adds salt to the wound:

NBC extended the trainwreck called I’m a aCelebrity … Get Me Outta Here to two hours, resulting in the pre-emption of L&O: CI. Same will happen on Monday, June 22. So far, it seems safe to mark Monday, June 29 for the return of the series (but will it be a new episode?) that has just added Jeff Goldblum, filling the spot left vacant when Chris Noth decided to leave the show.

So, there you have it. Blame NBC. For those of you craving L&O: CI in the meantime, Zap2it reveals many,  many reruns on Canadian digital cable service Mystery TV and a couple on CTV stations. Click here for Zap2it’s Montreal digital listings or localize it to your area.

And in the meantime, no need to leave you grumpy. What’s your take on Goldblum’s new character? Raised by shrinks, his detective character, Zach Nichols, is not quite as odd and intense as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Robert Goren, but he’s a comer. Too much intensity?

I’ve only seen one episode featuring Golblum (In Treatment) and I like the way the chemistry seems to be building, however reluctantly on her part, between Nichols and the now-confirmed-pregnant Det. Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson). But no matter the role, Goldblum is a hard sell for some people. What’s your take? Email me or scroll down and leave a comment.

The final episode of the current season of “Monk” played last night, but I only just watched it. Anyway, the show only has one more season to go!!! This is almost worse than “The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz”. Monk is such a lovable character, and this cannot be allowed. Why don’t they cancel Law and Order Criminal Intent? That show sucks.
We need to start a petition to keep Monk going. I’d start it myself, but the website for that thing has the word in image verification, and no audio version of it–totally not visually impaired unfriendly, like Youtube. While we’re at it, lt’s start a petition to require websites to have audio verrification, and let’s petition for the reincarnation of The Dresden Files TV series. Honestly! What is the world coming to?

The second season of In Plain Sight and the Law & Order: Criminal Intent will both return to the USA network on Sunday April 19th

In Plain Sight, which stars Mary McCormack as a US Marshal working in the witness relocation unit, is back for a 16-episode second season.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent ’s eighth season sees Jeff Goldblum join the cast as a detective born and bred in Manhattan’s upper west side.

The World Poker Tour has agreed a new one-year deal with Fox Sports Net, who took over the show last season.

The season will include 26 one-hour episodes, with filming due to start in a few months.

Perhaps with one eye on the buzz being generated by the much-anticipated live-action Marvel Comics Avengers movie, the Cartoon Network has ordered 26 episodes of Marvel Super Hero Squad. The team in the animated adventure will feature Captain America, Silver Surfer, Hulk, Wolverine and Iron Man, several of whom are also lined up to appear in the live-action movie currently in pre-production. The half-hour show is expected to premiere later this year.

One New York filming location that will look familiar to anyone who passes it – unless they’ve been living under a rock for the past ten years - is the New York County Courthouse.  This massive building, with it’s hundred foot wide grand staircase and towering granite colonnade, has been featured in thousands of productions over the years.  But it should be most recognizable to fans of the crime show genre as the courthouse from all of the Law and Order series.  It is at this courthouse that McCoy and Briscoe, Benson and Stabler, and Eames and Goren see all of their cases tried.  Besides being featured weekly on the three Law and Order series, the courthouse has also been featured in Miracle on 34th Street, Twelve Angry Men, Legal Eagles, Regarding Henry, Nuts, Wall Street, Good Fellas, The Devil’s Advocate, Married to the Mob, City Hall, The Hurricane, Kojak, Cagney and Lacey, Naked City, NYPD Blue, The Equalizer, The Godfather, and Aftershock: Earthquake in New York.

The New York County Courthouse was built back in 1919 by Boston architect Guy Lowell, who also built the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.  Guy actually won the commision of the building in a 1913 design contest.  His original winning design for the courthouse featured a circular shape, but plans changed and he ended up building the courthouse in a six-sided, hexagonal form (bird’s eye view pictured above).  Looking at the building from the front, one would never know it was built in this way.  Very cool!  The building, which was made a New York City Landmark in 1966, is absolutely beautiful – and overwhelming – in person.  I am telling you, we don’t have anything like this in L.A.! 

In the Sixth Season of Sex and the City Carrie reported for jury duty at the United States Courthouse, which is located right next door to the Law and Order Courthouse.  In the episode, entitled “Hop, Skip and A Week”, Carrie and her boyfriend Berger share a “Hollywood kiss” on the courthouse steps just before she checks in to perform her civic duty.  At first I thought Carrie and Berger had their kiss on the steps of the Law and Order Courthouse, but upon closer inspection I realized it was a different Corinithian-style building altogether.  The two courthouse buildings look amazingly similar, and are both very beautiful, especially because they are situated right next to each other.  They create quite an imposing view as you come upon them.  The U.S. Courthouse was built in 1933, a bit later than the New York County Courthouse.  It was designed by Cass Gilbert, who also designed New York’s Woolworth Building. Even though I am pretty sure New York jury duty is nowhere near as fun as jury duty in L.A., I think it would be very cool to perform my civic duty in such a historic building.

Okay, it’s been a while since I wrote something worthwhile on this blog, but I’ve been very very busy…….watching TV. As well as reaffirming my oath of Trekkie-ness, I must also confess that I, Lulupop Van Fakename, am a TV junkie.

This it not just the normal level of TV watching. I’m talking at least 4 hours a night, with double (or even triple) on the weekends. I don’t even care what’s on. I have seen so many reruns of Law and Order that I can tell you the ending before the opening credits have finished. That’s recent episodes, as well as the original series with Detective Logan and BOTH his pre-Lenny partners.

I can also tell you exactly what’s happening in cycle 11 of America’s Next Top Model and the current season of Project Runway (wanna know who wins? I know!). The best of Jerry Springer? I’m there. Cheaters? Yep. Cops? Even better.

I will however, admit that I do have my favourite shows that I watch religiously. Actually more than religiously – I MUST watch these shows. By “must” I mean that if Colin Firth asked me on a date at the same time as these shows, Colin would be dining alone (or in front of my television).

You may be wondering why, if my life revolves around television, I am writing this blog at nine o’clock at night. Well, it’s simple and the reason is one of my most frustrating times of the year – the Summer Hiatus.

Up until two weeks ago, I was a happy little camper. And then BAM summer holidays in TV Land, and out comes the sad little panda.

For the rest of the year, there will be no more Spicks & Specks, no more Good News Week, no more Home & Away, no more Bobby Goren in Law & Order: Criminal Intent; and as I found out tonight, no more new episodes of NCIS (which I only just realised when a character I saw die a few weeks ago showed up in Abbie’s lab).

Now I don’t mind if they replace my all time favourite shows in the whole entire world for a couple of months, but couldn’t they at least replace them with something decent?

Replacing Home & Away with How I Met Your Mother is not okay with me. I didn’t like Doogie Howser when he was little, I don’t like him now that he’s all grown up. Seriously. The show is crap. I really don’t care how he met your mother, I want to know what happened during the Year 12 Formal! Did Belle make it after being crushed under a pile of rubble? Did Kane miss Melody or did she get smeared like a bug on the windscreen?

Apart from changing shows, some stations are completely reshuffling their schedules. One example: For as long as I can remember reruns of The Simpsons have been played at 6pm weekdays. In the lead up to the school holidays, some bonehead in their scheduling department thought it would be a good idea to take away the CHILDREN’S TV SHOW and replace it with…The Bold & The Beautiful. Yeah, that’s a genius in the making *eye rolling smiley*

I’ve come to realise that there are only two good reasons to watch TV during the summer.

1. Ugly Better twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

2. Cricket Season

Yep, that’s about it. A show about a Latino personal assistant with a hunk for a boss and eleven guys running around a field in white trousers (13 if you count the batmen).

So, having come to that conclusion, I have been working hard to overcome my addiction. My nails have been painted more times this week than they have been for the last six months and my room has never looked tidier. My blog will also be getting a workout, because without regular fixes of Paul McDermott, Lulu gets a little antsy and will have a LOT to bitch about.

I could also take this opportunity to spend a little more time on my feet. I could do an exercise video or borrow some weights…I’m sorry – I got delusional for a moment, back to reality…

…and back to the TV because anything NCIS repeat just started.

Q: I love crime shows like Law & Order and CSI. In the credits, I often see people called “Tech Advisors.” What are tech advisors and how do they help a TV show?

A: Tech Advisors are people who specialize in areas that are useful for both television and film. Writers don’t know everything about the occupations they write about. So every cop drama, medical series, and forensic team show have tech advisors who work in these fields to advise the production.
