Poco meno di 4 milioni per il programma di RaiTre “Ballarò” con Giovanni Floris, 2,6 milioni per il doppio episodio inedito della sesta stagione della serie poliziesca di RaiDue “Senza traccia” con Anthony LaPaglia, 2,4 milioni per la replica dell’action-comedy di Italia 1 “Rush Hour – Due mine vaganti” con Jackie Chan e Chris Tucker; disastroso esito per la replica del film TV thriller di Rete 4 “Il mistero del lago” con Lorenzo Flaherty; infine, il programma documentaristico di La 7 “Impero” con Valerio Massimo Manfredi ha avuto 567.000 spettatori (2,14%). 8:47 pm: I can’t believe that not only is Sandra Bullock old and married to Jesse James, but Wesley Snipes is a criminal.  He’s probably also a decent fighter with all the action flicks he’s done and with his being black and all, so he’s really like Simon Phoenix.  Ha.

Scottish legal website threatened by Lord Advocate over abuse story claims. Earlier this week, in what may very well be a turning point in a Grampian Police investigation into reports of the alleged existence of a ‘paedophile gang’ in the Aberdeen area which is claimed to have abused several victims including a down’s syndrome girl, the well known Scottish legal magazine website “The Firm” was ordered by the Crown Office to take down two reports it published into the case.

The Firm’s coverage, I cannot report .. but the verbatim reports as published, and now withdrawn apparently after intervention from the Crown Office itself, can be found online with a quick google search, or HERE. It is of course, in the public interest that any allegations of such a serious nature are fully investigated, and if found to be substantiated, anyone identified must feel the full weight of the law, and the considerable media attention which normally accompanies such scandals. However, is the public interest served by threatening the media into a silence of blacked out pages ? I think not.

Hollie is without doubt, due to no fault of her own, a vulnerable human being, and it is the duty of us all to care for those who are in such circumstances. If that care has failed, we have all failed, and those in office who are charged with protecting us from such failures, have failed the most.

Hollie is, as we have all tragically seen with headline after headline. not alone in being let down by a system designed to protect children & vulnerable adults from serious abuse, but one very serious consistency which always seems to come out of any inquiry into a case, be it abuse, or even a death from abuse such as the horrendous Baby P case in England … many of those who were responsible by job & position for protecting against such crimes, tend to escape any penalty for their administrative failures …

With regard to these failures, I think we all need to be reminded of the infamous, and equally horrendous “Miss X” abuse scandal from the Scottish Borders, where a vulnerable woman with learning disabilities was systematically raped & abused for years, until the media intervened, followed by Christine Grahame MSP, which eventually led to prosecutions & guilty verdicts on those who committed the crimes against Miss X.

However, the efforts to cover up Scottish Borders Council’s lack of action in the Miss X abuse scandal, were quite stunning at the time, with the same threats made from certain quarters to those who were publicising the case, and tales of reports & files being removed, in what many construed as a concerted effort to hide the truth. Eventually, ‘improvements’ were made to social care in the Scottish Borders, but, apart from the successful prosecutions, little in the way of heads rolled in official positions, for Miss X’s years of abuse, suffered just a few hundred yards away from the Council’s own headquarters in St Boswells.

Aberdeen’s Press & Journal newspaper report that Grampian Police have re-interviewed Hollie & her mother, and are now investigating the case. Let us hope that along with a Police investigation, comes the necessary full inquiry to establish the facts of the case, why some feel that silence & censorship is applicable, rather than serving the interests of justice, and why it may very well be that as a nation we are still failing to protecting those among us who need our protection.

When I hear the sound of the gavel, I salivate like a Pavlovian dog. For even if justice isn’t served, the truth will be revealed. The onion will peel. There are layers. We are passengers on a rising aircraft, and the landscape will slowly come into focus until we can view all the puzzle’s pieces at once, fitting together to form a picture we did not, at a lower altitude, have the perspective to see.

On Law & Order, the cops and lawyers are beautiful. Since I am on their side, I, too, become beautiful while I’m watching. The pedophiles drive white vans and lure children with balloons and the promise of a party, they abduct and even kill the children, but not every one: there is always at least one we are able to save. The pedophile is never beautiful, his teeth are bad. His abdomen is a testament to shoddy discipline and a sweet tooth.

But sometimes the bad guys aren’t pure evil, and the good guys aren’t pure good. When this happens, the officers begin to contemplate. Life and meaning are called into question. Between commercial breaks, we get some sense of how fast the world is spinning, of the chaos inherent in a dead innocent, in the senselessly abrupt ends lives can find. We see the triumphs of justice but also its limits. The struggles that can never be prevented or stopped. It is so sad to strive, knowing the odds. But what is the alternative? A loss of hope, a slide into a darker lack of feeling, an apathy that could distance us from the things worth the fight. My own mortality is too painful to dwell on. But I can watch these deaths and agree, nothing more could’ve been done.

I’ve been sort of watching THE GOOD WIFE; I have it on so I can listen and occasionally glance at it while doing other things, but my colleague Mala has really been stumping for it, so I made the effort to pay attention to last night’s episode — and was rewarded with an interesting story of suspected jury-tampering.

Alicia Florrick is the titular character; her state’s attorney husband was jailed following a public sex scandal, and Alicia was seen grimly “standing by her man” at his press conference. Star Julianna Margulies is a very appealing actress who imbues the wronged wife with an amiability that really works. The show’s premise is original, and Margulies runs with the character. Alicia shows more than a little vulnerability, but projects a facade of competence and dignity that keeps her from looking silly. The big question is obvious: How could she not know? Was she that oblivious? Was she just a stooge? Alicia asks herself those same probing questions with every home video and gift she reconsiders.

As a bonus, the-powers-that-be are able to find intriguing legal storylines to go with the interesting characters. Alicia has returned to her career as a lawyer and — surprise, surprise — she’s pretty darn good at it. Her compassion for the victims in cases is often the key to victory. (Gee, wonder where that comes from?) But the cases also take lots of legwork, and luckily Alicia meshes well with “in house” investigator Kalinda Sharma (portrayed by British actress Archie Panjabi). Kalinda boasts a more streetwise, edgy persona. Alicia also works with Cary, despite the fact that actor Matt Czuchry (ex-Logan, GILMORE GIRLS) looks too young to be a law student, let alone a litigator. Margulies seems to have a real connection with LAW & ORDER vet Chris Noth, who plays her crooked, incarcerated hubby Peter. (Hey, what’s not to like about SEX AND THE CITY’s Big and ER’s Carol Hathaway hooking up?) I like that Peter is still in the picture as a kind of Yoda peddling a jaded insider’s view of the way the game is really played. Alicia resists the Dark Side because she wants to be…y’know, good.

IERI SERA… Ancora un ottimo risultato per il penultimo appuntamento con due episodi inediti della serie italiana di RaiUno “Un medico in famiglia 6″ con Giulio Scarpati, che con una media superiore ai 7 milioni e mezzo di spettatori ha stracciato la sesta ed ultima puntata della miniserie-flop di Canale 5 “Il falco e la colomba” con Giulio Berruti e Cosima Coppola. Bene la puntata conclusiva dell’edizione autunnale del varietà di Italia 1 “Le Iene Show” con Ilary Blasi, Luca Bizzarri e Paolo Kessisoglu, e l’accoppiata poliziesca inedita di RaiDue tra “Senza traccia” e “Criminal Minds” (da martedì prossimo raddoppia “Senza traccia”, e “Criminal Minds” rimane in onda solo la domenica sera). Circa 2,3 milioni a testa per il film d’azione di Rete 4 “Nico” con Steven Seagal e per il programma sportivo di RaiTre “Sfide – Riscatto azzurro” (proposto in sostituzione di “Ballarò”, saltato ieri per un’influenza del conduttore Giovanni Floris); infine, il programma documentaristico di La 7 “Impero” con Valerio Massimo Manfredi ha ottenuto 736.000 spettatori (2,86%).

Em 1984, as noites de sexta-feira eram abrigo de séries que se tornariam grandes clássicos da TV: ‘Miami Vice’, ‘Dallas’, ‘Hunter’, ‘Webster’, ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ e o ‘V’ original. Programação boba, leve demais? Pode ser. Mas pelo menos era original.

Hoje as sextas-feiras são um emaranhado de shows perdidos, no limbo, reprises. As emissoras simplesmente não sabem o que fazer com as sextas-feiras. E a preocupação cresce ainda mais quando NENHUM dos programas consegue passar dos 2 pontos na demo qualificada.

A última sexta-feira foi vencida pela CBS que exibiu ‘Ghost Whisperer’ (8 milhões e 1.9 ponto), ‘Medium’ (8.2 milhões e 1.9 ponto) e ‘Numbers’ (8.2 milhões e 1.8 ponto).

A ABC e a NBC empataram. A primeira exibiu ‘Supernanny’ (5 milhões e 1.4 ponto), ‘Ugly Betty’ (4.5 milhões e 1.3 ponto – finalmente subiu um pouquinho) e ‘20/20′ (6.7 milhões e 1.9 ponto). A NBC exibiu ‘Law & Order’ (7.5 milhões e 1.7 ponto), ‘Dateline’ (7.3 milhões e 1.7 ponto) e ‘The Jay Leno Show’ (4.7 milhões e 1.2 ponto).

A Fox exibiu reprises, enquanto a CW levou ‘Smallville’ ao ar, atingindo seu maior número de telespectadores na temporada (2.7 milhões e 1.2 ponto).

Yes, I’m talking about the original flavor series here.  It’s been around now for twenty years.  I didn’t start watching in year one, but by the time Kincaid appeared I was devoted to the series.  I knew the premise of the show and loved the format.  You went from enforcement to prosecution in one hour.  There were a number of characters (in the beginning, all men) and I loved it.  One of the reasons I continued watching is because the show managed to keep that original spirit even when we’ve had character(s) changing out all the time.

That said, as a shipper type person, it’s not like this was a show I could get into in such a way.  I think it’s first entry was with Jack McCoy and Claire Kincaid, a coupling I felt was so wrong and rather icky.  I love Sam Waterson and I realize this is 10-15 years ago but I didn’t get this whole “Woman magnat” thing they had for him.  When he was hired, they made sure to let us know he was famous for sleeping with his assistants and thus getting with Claire (though thankfully offscreen) just reaked to me.  Of course, as much as I loathed the pairing, I hated they killed her off.  Of course, taht’s not the most horrific character killing (Alex Borgia won that prize.)

So why am I dedicating a blog to shipping and this show now?  Well if you caught last night’s episode, you would know why.  It was super heavy on shipping potential with Mike (the Exec DA) and his assistant, Connie.  I’ve always liked them.  When Jack McCoy got promoted, I thought I would be mad they didn’t find a female DA to take his place but Mike was always a breath of fresh air.  And he’s had natural chemistry with Connie.  I usually don’t care for boss/employees falling for each other, but this time, it’s more equal.  We even had Lupo refer to Connie as Mike’s “partner”.

Anyway, I think another reason I like it so much, is while he probably had a small crush on her, she’s had a definite hate on for him.  I think the interesting aspect is, there is no wide eyed crushing daddy replacement issues here.  A few weeks ago, Connie stated Mike had no soul.  Usually the character is much more sympathetic and fair minded, but there is no denying Mike pushes her buttons and he’s a big ass a lot of the time.  Connie also sees him doing his job which can get cutthroat fast and is turned off by many of his methods he uses to win a case.  So I have no idea how she feels about him in return.  I believe there is an attraction on her side but she obviously knows it’s too risky to go there (as we learned, she has had an affair with another DA who wound up being last night’s villain.  I presume it makes her even more skittish in allowing Mike to get too close).  Now that Mike’s feelings for her are like a giant flashing sign while they have been ordered by McCoy to work long and late hours, she’s probably wishing now Cutter would stick to being a typical jerk so she can ignore those strange new feelings bubbling up inside her.

Meanwhile, Cutter coming to terms with his feelings was an awesome but unusual (for this show) moment.  Having him talk it out with Jack McCoy was actually awesome, simply because Sam Waterson’s facial expressions while listening to Mike were priceless. And now suddenly I’m happy to have a remindor to McCoy/Kincaid as well as other indescretions Jack had.  A few weeks ago, when Mike had really pushed Connie’s buttons, she requested to be transferred to another department away from Mike.  Jack refused quite vocally that they were both having to get along together and now he reminds them again but with different underlying implications.  Some aren’t happy with Jack being a glorified babysitter for his staff but I found it refreshing and reminded me how charming Waterson can be while still bring that firm stand he’s known for.

So bottom line, I may have finally found a new ship to join, assuming the show doesn’t go too long without revisiting it again, something they’ve done before.  I’m not suggesting we make this a show all about Cutter getting it on with Connie, but I do think if they are serious on this, they should at least throw a remindor here and there in the next episode or two so it can be clear the sexual tension is still there.

• L’episodio in due parti di Smallville diventa un TV movie
  Smallville è arrivata alla nona stagione e sta tenendo alto il morale in casa CW con i suoi buoni ascolti al venerdì. Ora arriva la notizia che i due episodi che vedranno l’arrivo della Justice Society of America (intitolati “Society” e “Legends”) saranno mandati in onda sotto forma di un film televisivo di due ore, il prossimo 29 Gennaio. La JSA, come viene chiamata dai fans dei fumetti DC, è un gruppo di supereroi meno noto rispetto alla Justice League (che vedeva invece tra le proprie fila icone come Batman, Wonder Woman o Superman). I personaggi che appariranno sono Hawkman (interpretato da Michael Shanks), Dottor Fate (Brent Stait), e Stargirl (Britt Irvin).
• Ugly Betty alla riscossa
  Quando, in Usa, una serie viene spostata al venerdì (che loro chiamano “Friday night death slot” non a caso) di solito le ragioni sono sempre le stesse: scarsi ascolti e desiderio del network di allungare il brodo per realizzare episodi sufficienti in modo da rivendere poi la serie in syndication. Di certo la cosa prelude spesso ad una cancellazione.
  Questo è quello che è accaduto proprio con Ugly Betty. La serie, dopo un primo anno di successo sia di pubblico che di critica, ha iniziato una parabola discendente che l’ha portata ad essere defenestrata dal prestigioso spazio del giovedì sera che occupava l’anno scorso e ritrovarsi quindi in una serata dove il suo pubblico per definizione solitamente esce. Invece, da quando è iniziata questa quarta stagione, non solo gli ascolti (sommati alle registrazioni) non sono stati così disastrosi come ci si aspettava ma la serie sembra rinata a nuova vita con una qualità, a detta di critica e fans, paragonabile a quella della prima stagione. La ABC aveva anche considerato il trasferimento della serie, nel 2010, nello spazio lasciato vuoto da Eastwick. La cosa però, pare, che per ora non avverrà.
  Ultima soddisfazione per la più bruttina d’America: giovedì scorso Flash Forward, serie costosissima e pubblicizzata come l’evento dell’anno e che occupa lo spazio che aveva Ugly Betty l’anno scorso, ha ottenuto solo 8.33 milioni di telespettatori mentre esattamente 12 mesi fa UB riusciva a fare oltre 9.20 milioni!
• Alyssa Milano guest star a “Castle”
  Alyssa Milano parteciperà a un episodio di Castle, l’ironico serial crime ABC che sta riscuotendo un discreto successo e che ha già ricevuto l’ordine per una stagione completa. Nell’episodio interpreterà una ex fiamma del protagonista Richard Castle, interpretato da Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Desperate Housewives). Ricordiamo l’attrice per Streghe, dove era una delle protagoniste, ma ha partecipato anche a Melrose Place e My Name is Earl. Nel 2010 partirà inoltre, in midseason, una nuova serie sempre su ABC che la vedrà protagonista, intitolata Romantically Challenged.
• Arriva “The Prisoner”
  Domani in USA debutterà, sul canale AMC, “The Prisoner“, miniserie in sei parti che è il remake della omonima, famosa, serie degli anni ‘60 “Il Prigioniero“. Il telefilm originale è ancora tutt’oggi amato e ha influenzato molte opere sci-fi venute dopo, tra tutte citiamo Lost. La miniserie ha avuto un alto budget, è stata in parte girata in Africa e vede schierati tra il cast due famosi attori cinematografici come Ian McKellen e James Caviezel. I was not excited when I booked Law and Order as the part was very small and I thought it a step up from an extra. However when I arrived the first day I had my own room and dresser and a runner for anything I might want – it was a delight – also they extended the role so I was there more and got paid so much money it was delicious. Working with the cast it was clear they had a great time the set had a family feel – the whole experience really made we want to be a series regular on a great show filming in NYC. Kind of a turning point in my acting goals!

NBC Show Law & Order

For those unfamiliar with the show Law & Order is actually the longest running legal-crime show and is current tied for longest running show in prime time television ever. In its 20^th season on NBC Law & Order is a drama series that takes a realist look at the criminal and legal perspectives on one of the toughest cities, New York City.

In the first half-hour of the show viewers that a look at the investigative crimes and apprehend suspects. While in the second half-hour the shows focus shifts to the criminal courts work within a complicated justice system to prosecute the accused.

Some of the cases are simple, but most are multi-faceted. The investigations are challenging, prosecutions are complicated, and decisions about legal procedures and plea-bargaining are difficult. This is what makes the show great for many viewers especially those interested in the legal system.

All in all Law & Order has also become one of entertainment businesses preeminent brands, with its successful spinoffs like “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

This is devastating news to me, because I LOVE ME SOME LAW & ORDER! I don’t usually watch TV, but nothing, I mean NOTHING, can pull me away from an episode of this show. No matter how many times I’ve seem the same re-run, I can not get away. The show is entering its 19th season and has essentially been around my entire life, but I honestly can not imagine TV without it. Come to think of it, if Law & Order didn’t exist I’d probably save a lot of money on electricity. So tonight,  I will light a little candle for Law &  Order and pray that it doesn’t become just another distant memory.
