You need to way in on the cost factor and count the costs of being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

It will cost you popularity, it will cost you promotion perhaps at times, it will cost you an easy life, you will have to discipline yourself, you will have to buffed your body, you will have to say “No” to temptation, you will have to say “No” to this world, you will have to break with a crowd, you will have to be willing to stand alone for Christ, you will have to be willing walk to the beat of a different drummer and to step out of the crowd even if no one follows after Jesus Christ, you would be willing to stand if you were the only person in the world for Jesus Christ. That’s the cost factor.

You will have to be willing to suffer persecution for Christ and let me tell you, it will come. It might even cost you your life.

He is not coming to play games. He not is coming to be dazzle.

He is coming to dominate. He is coming to slaughter.

He is the King of king and He is the Lord of lord. and at the end of this age, He will bolt out of heaven on a white steed and His garments are dripped in blood. The blood of His own enemies and He is coming back to conquer and to damn.

You need to make terms of peace with this coming King or you will be subjected in damnation forever and Jesus Christ has made terms of peace.

You need to settle out of court with Him. You do not want to go into that final day of conflict with Christ.

For He will be ruthless in the execution of His Justice but He offers you mercy today. He will agree to terms of surrender. He will agree to terms of peace but they are His terms of peace, not ours and His terms of peace are very simply this: You must hate your own father and mother and brother and sister and even your own life more than Me or you cannot be My disciple And you must take up a cross and follow Me or you cannot be My disciple. And if you do not, you will meet Me in the final judgment and it will glorify God in your destruction.

He is pressing you for a decision. He will not be put off. You cannot hit the mute button any longer in your heart, you must answer Him.

Verse 33, “so then,” conclusion, “none of you can be My disciple”

“So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.” -Luke 14:33

He is saying none of you can be a true Christian, None of you can be in My Kingdom, None of you can be in right relationship with Me or the Father, None of you can be My disciple Who does not give up all His own possessions.

What is our Lord saying? He is not backing off.

He is increasing the commitment that He is calling for with every line of this section. Well He is not saying that you have to buy your way into the Kingdom of Heaven for none of us have enough gold and none of us have enough silver to ever remove the stain of sin that has defiled our inner soul.

What is He saying? Who does not give up ALL of his own possessions.

Well this must be taken in context with other texts of Scripture and let me just cut to the bottom line of the bottom line. You must transfer the ownership of all that you are and all that you have to all that He is. That’s what He is saying.

You life is no longer your life, it is now His life. You time is no longer your time, it is now His time. Your possessions are no longer your possessions, they are now His possessions. Your future is no longer your future, it is now His future. Your treasure is no longer your treasure, it is His treasure. And you have transferred all that you are and all that you have to all that He is.

That’s what is is… to meet His terms of peace. Yet, the exchange is not bartered or bought with real money but it is purchased with the total complete surrender of your life to Christ. That’s what saving faith is. It is coming to the end of yourself and completely and entirely and trusting all that you are and all that you have to all that He is.

This is your eternal soul. This is the only life you will ever live. This deals with the only eternity you will ever have.

And so He says, “salt is good but If even salt has become tasteless, meaning it gives evidence that was never true salt to begin with. With what will it be season, and the answer is nothing. Verse 34, it is useless either for the soil or the manure pile. It’s just no good to anyone, not to God, not to Christ, not to the Kingdom, not to the movement. You’re just taking up a seat for someone else. There were other people who were trying to get into this.

It is useless either for the soil. Your not even worth the toilet, spiritually speaking. Because you have not come to the place of total surrender of your life and supreme legiance and supreme loyalty to Christ. You have not yet come under the Lordship of Christ and taken up a cross to follow after Him. And then He says, “he who has hears to hear, let him hear.”

You need to give strictest attention to what God has said in His Son. For God has spoken in His Son to us in this conference and God has brought everyone of us to this place. Not one of us is here by accident or by happenstance and it is the goodness of God and the mercy of God that has brought you to this place where you have heard of Isaiah 53. You have heard of the suffering Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who upon that cross became sin for us. Upon that cross He died to self that He might live for us and that He might bear our sins and iniquities upon that tree and purchase our salvation. And there is salvation in no other name, for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” And He is calling out to you today “Come unto Me, all ye who are weary and heavy laden and I will take you in and receive you unto Myself take My yoke upon you. And learn of Me for I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find rest for your souls. For My burden is easy and My yoke is Light.” It is.

You will have the weight of sin lifted off of you and you will now have the yoke of Christ upon you and He gets into that yoke with you and He pulls with you but it will require the total commitment of your life to Him.

Oh, how we ought to search our hearts here today. Have I come to this place of total commitment in my life? Have I yielded my life to the sovereign lordship of Him who dies upon the cross for me. I want you to know that the gates of paradise have been swung open to you. The narrow gate is open and if you will take a step of faith and come through this narrow gate, and commit your life to Him. Despite the strength of His words. He also says, “him who comes unto Me I will in no wise cast out.”

He is calling you today to come, to come to Him, to take a step of faith and to come to Him but if you come to Him. Don’t play games. You must surrender to Christ.

Well, I must say the time spent on this was well worth it, though it looks like I worked for days on

Well,

I must say the time spent on this was well worth it, though it looks like I worked for days on my hair and makeup, it was actually only hours…..and it did manage to cause us some very sore stomachs from laughing our butts off when snapping the pix for the doo of the day which I put on Facebook or reading the comments…

In a nutshell, Suzanne had done some photos of some normal ladies (well when I say normal I mean they are not professional models, but I would not take the stand swearing to their normalcy in other aspects, especially Wingwoman Lylie) anywho, these pictures were going to be put together in a calendar for Victoria’s Attic in Grande Prairie to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. The title was W.O.W. (Women Of Wisdom) and there was going to be an unveiling, and booby shaped muffins, and some heads shaved… a gal named Shawna and my melon… then a bunch of others joined the group which is always good when a good cause is happening. So all is good right? you would think so… people doing a calendar, Breast Cancer awareness, heads shaved, etc….. well, this is when I had a brainstorm of my own……

“Doo Of The Day Until Bald For Boobies or DOTDUBFB”

I was going to to a “Doo Of The Day Until Bald For Boobies” and put the pictures on my Facebook and Suzanne Sagmeister Photography’s page also….. and I was going to give it a cool name along the lines of Suzanne who always comes up with funny and cool slogans like W.O.W. or Sneak Peaks, so I called it “DOTDUBFB” which made no sense according to anyone that took English in school apparently…. “DOTDUBFB” which is pronounced “DOT DUBB”…. the “F” is obviously silent… you know, short for Do Of The Day Until Bald For Boobies…..but I digress… cool names is not what I doo… GET IT??? DOO !!! like hair DOO !!!!

Day 1 – So, Suzanne left me alone for a couple hours and after running around with scissors for a bit I decided that the natural part of my hair would be an AWESOME start of the “Day Doo’s”…

"The Parting of the Gray Sea" - I can't go to school today Mom, my hair's too short and my socks are too tight

I snapped this one with my phone, and had it as my background picture until it made me ill… which was a week later… manyways, I put it up and called it “Doo of the Day Until Bald For Boobies” on Facebook and really thought nothing of it… I got a couple of comments, mostly from my children, but that was about it… Suzanne suggested putting it on the fan page which I thought was awesome as I only have 2 friends and really wasn’t getting the publicity I deserved !!!

Day 2 – Nobody really commented too much on it, so I thought I had to step it up another level… my hair was not that long to begin with, and it really didn’t leave me with a lot of options, but I grabbed the hairspray, the gell, the hair glue and the brush and hit the bathroom and the mirror…

“I walked across the avenue, I never thought I’d meet a girl like you ah ooh…”

Flock of Seagulls got nothing on this doo !!!!

We thought Suzanne’s pink hoodie would really bring out the bloodshot eyes, and snapped the picture and this was really what started it all… people were now following the doo’’s… and were leaving comments… and were wondering what I might “doo” tomorrow…. ya, like I think stuff and things ahead of time, like I have plan…… WRONG !!!!… I figured a couple of pix, a couple of laughs, and on to my next project… WRONG !!!

Day 3 – luckily while doing the Flock of Friggin’ Seagulls, I had a brainstorm about a superhero I might consider doo-ing… so I grabbed the gell and glue and spray and hair dryer and scotch tape and utensils from the drawer and away I went…

“Petroleum Jelly is Vaseline… grab some knives and tape and I is Wolverine”

It's like watching the X-Men Origins... seriously... on a $10.00 budget

Now it was just bizarre, Hollywood was calling, people were starting to gather outside our RV awaiting for my appearance and the Doo of the Day !!! ya right, I wanted to go uptown like Wolverine and spend the day like this… but someone, not mentioning any “Suzannes” had other ideas… I was going to do it anyways, but when I went to remove bats from the batcave (pick my nose) I just about took a nostril an eye and most of my forehead off… so, rather than remove my face to prove Suzanne wrong, I took it off to appease her….

“Captain’s log… Star Date 2009…… Klingons all around us… force field growing weaker… warp five.. live long and prosper ”

Day 4 – So now I was going to doo something I thought would be awesome, every Nerd on Facebook would love me, and I could do it WITHOUT losing an eye or part of my nose… all it was going to take was a banana, a whole lot of black marker like makeup pencil and a steady hand….. this one made people laugh and try to figure out how the Hell I got thick and lustrious bangs and pointy ears….

It like looking at a more handsome and younger Len Nimoy... I call him Len cuz I'm cool like that !!!

O.K., the people were starting to get into this… I on the other hand, was just about out of ideas with my short and receding hair… in fact…. my very small brain was now pretty much running on fumes… Suzanne was very supportive and told me to “stop crying soldier, drop down and give her twenty push ups and get back at it !!!”

Day 5 – I’m not sure how I came up with this one, but spend a few hours with gell and a brush and make up pencil, and you eventually come up with SOMETHING… we managed to drag our boy Angus into the fun, and (Suzanne) drew a circle on his face…. which by the way stayed on for 2 weeks… and then another 2 weeks when Suzanne put it on AGAIN!!!!

“Even a deaf dog knows when you are laughing AT him…. and not WITH him”

Little Rascals Alfalfa and Petey the Pit Bull

Well after I got out of the hospital after “Petey the Pit Bull” attacked me in my sleep, I had an idea… something so spectacular, something so awesome, something so GINORMOUS that even Ted Turner and his colorization technology would be impressed….

Day 6 – The thunder and lightning were going off every few seconds….the evil Doctor Kampelastein was working away in his mad scientist laboratory(bathroom) brewing up his next creature…

“The townsfolk were so afeared of this evil monster, they chased him with flaming sticks while he walked with arms outstretched and not bending his knees until his skin turned green…”

FrankenShane

I spent most of that night and some of the morning Stomping through the village with arms outstretched and legs straight, putting the fear of Shane into the townsfolk. Finally, I came to my senses and quit while I was ahead… or a head… a green head…

Day 7 – and the Lord rested…. no seriously, I rested… I was tired from all that stomping and walking and saying things like “Me Crush You” and “Why Don’t My Legs and arms bend?” and my hair was really sore from all the washing and scrubbing of the hair wax and marker off my skin……. “WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!” there, done crying like a baby..

“Jim Carrey may be dumb, but I am Dumber”

Day 8 – Always have been a fan of early Jim Carrey, ever since he was on In Living Color with the Wayan’s brothers… so what would be a doo of the day without a little James…. I tell you, that friggin’ make up pencil also works on teeth… mind you, I have a chip from fighting with a wheelbarrow and probably didn’t even have to color it in…

ALRIGHTY THEN !!!

Day 9 – Well, anybody with half a brain would know that Jim Carrey is the newer version of Jerry Lewis in the Nutty Professor… add some glasses, add some huge teeth, and pretty much you’re the Lewis… probably nobody remembers him in this movie, or even him for that matter, but google him and you will see I pretty much could go to the bank and cash cheques as him…. ya, pretty much….

Chiclets anyone??

Day 10 – Well, the fans were awesome, the remarks were fantastic and we had a blast doing it… thanks to Lawson for shooting some of the pictures for me, and thanks to Suzanne for NOT making them look awesome like she wanted too…. I find the crappier they look, the more they can see the drawn on hair and the fake teeth and the bolt in the neck!!! I thought that Elvis was a great way to finish it off, as he was the King, and he was leaving the building… I had to actually SHAVE my sideburns, as they are THICKER than Elvis’ were…..

“Hey Priscilla, can you hand me my peanut butter and pain killer sandwich!”

You.... ain't.... nothing.... but.... a ......hound dog... yer cryin' all the time..

Day 11 – finally, I got to go and get the head shaved…. cuz the hair was driving me nuts and it’s a short drive…

"Is that a car coming towards me?? " talk about deer in headlights look

Thanks again, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did !!! and remember, Breast Cancer or any kind of Cancer is not funny.. and many friends and families are hit with this devastating disease everyday… so shave your head, do fundraising, donate time, give generously, do whatever it takes to remove Cancer from our vocabulary…

“Richard Bellamy was born in 1827 in London, England, the son of George and Nancy Bellamy. He immigrated to New Brunswick at the age of nine with the “Blue Coat Emigrants”.

Bellamy settled in Stanley, York County, where he was involved in business and surveying. Later he moved to Nackawic where he owned and operated a large farm. He served one term on the Municipal Council Board. He was first elected to the New Brunswick Assembly as a Liberal member for York County in 1886. He was re-elected in 1890, but when the election was protested, he resigned and did not run again. In 1891, he took a seat on the Legislative Council of New Brunswick and sat until the dissolution of that body in April, 1892. Bellamy never married, and died at Nackawic in November, 1892.

I’m off to a SEO workshop tonight and I’m strangely excited. What is SEO you ask? Well, it is Search Engine Optimization. It’s basically how to be Google friendly. Google doesn’t currently like me that much so I have work to do to change that. And I’m jazzed to learn all about it. I’m not normally that geeky but it is so essential to any photographer’s business. (No comments Nadine… contrary to what you think, I’m not that geeky. Honest). I’m considering scrapping my website and having a blog driven portfolio site. So many questions to ask. …

I’m not even sad about missing Flamenco tonight.

In other news… I managed to delete yesterdays picture! AHHH!!! It wasn’t good, but there goes my unbroken string of over 100 straight days of picture taking. Not really, because I did take the picture. But nobody knows but me

Maybe it is a good thing. It was awfully dark and made me kind of look like a demon. Which is always hawt.

No other team makes more justice for what is going on this year. This season of the NBA is just a light update for last season, just like the Nuggets are a light update from the team who went to the Western Conference Finals. The contenders are the same, the middle teams are the same and the bad teams are the same just like the coach is the same, the blue chippers are the same and the mentality is the same in Colorado.

The only loss of the team that surprised us a year ago, because of how far they went without melting down, is Danthay Jones who left to be overpaid in Indiana. To replace him, the Nuggets signed Aaron Aflalo who will do the same things for a lower price and that’s how you run a franchise. Denver is also starting to prepare for the future by trading a draft pick next year to Minnesota for Ty Lawson.

Maybe Carmelo Anthony takes another step to the next level, Billups is not done yet, George Karl goes against his stats and the team doesn’t freak out like we are expecting to but their inside the paint is way too small to compete against powerful teams like the Spurs and the Lakers and that’s the reason why they don’t go deeper and they didn’t improve on that department.

This season will pick up where it lefts off, so I expect the Nuggets to pick up where they left off. They are probably the first team behind the two powerhouses of the Western Conference. We can’t predict injuries but we know they may, will happen which means that the Nuggets are still alive.

Halfway through October, and I’ve finished a first draft of my newest novel manuscript, a women’s fiction story about a downsized lawyer who meets a younger man dying of cancer and how they change each other’s lives. It’s about the longest first draft I’ve ever had at more than 75,000 words. I’m very pleased with it, and also pleased that it’s finished before–

NANOWRIMO!!!

Yes, the crazy month of writing dangerously begins in only 15 days. I’ve got a story in mind about psychic vampires, since vampires are the flavour du jour, and we’ll see how it goes. I completed the task in 2007, lost my way last year, but this year looks good for a win. The Erie group is meeting up at Borders November 1 at Millcreek for a Write-In–what a blast!

I’ve also recently won a writing course from nationallyknown teacher Margie Lawson, and I’m very excited about it! I got hold of several of her lecture packets and they are fantastic. I’m taking the two weeks between now and NaNo to bone up on her course on Empowering Character’s Emotions. Very exciting indeed!

I’m also reading, which is supposed to be good for writers as well– C.J. Lyons’ second book, Warning Signs, a medical thriller that has all the best stuff from ER and other medical shows I’ve watched, as well as sampling some Harlequin Blaze titles to see how others write sex. (Yes, Uncle Ed, this means that these manuscripts might actually be worth reading…)

All in all, it looks like a productive holiday season, which is good for me–traditionally a slow time for family law attorneys, since most parents try to hold things together for the benefit of the children for a few weeks. Nice to have something to look forward to.

So ladies and gentlemen, warm up your word processors and get ready to NaNo!

Manipulating Form Elements – what does this mean? Basically, it’s changing the HTML of t

Manipulating Form Elements – what does this mean? Basically, it’s changing the HTML of the page. Lawson provides several functions in Design Studio (DS) to set the value of an element, but what happens when you want to change the element itself? A good example of this might be on a screen with a date, like AP20. If a user keys the invoice date in the future, you may want to change the text to red so it stands out. But how?

At the end of the day, Lawson Portal is HTML and Javascript. Highly convoluted, but it still follows the same rules as any other web page. In order to perform actions on the form elements, we have to manipulate the DOM directly. (see this primer if you’re unfamiliar with DOM). The design studio (and all portal forms) are actually an XML document that the Portal renders into HTML. This is what gets most people because they forget that there is an intermediate step. What this means is that in order to access a document element via the DOM, you have to know the real name or ID of the element, not the one that is assigned in DS (very often they are the same, but not always). In my experience, when they are different it is a reference to the element type prepended to the DS id (but don’t quote me on that). A drop down list with the id “_l197″ would have the id of “VALUES_l197″ in the DOM. The best way to find the actual ID is to use a browser that has debugging, like IE8.

Let’s get to the fun stuff. I’m going to give an example that we actually have in production, so it’s going to cover a lot and be fairly involved. With any luck, I might pass on a couple of new things and not confuse anyone.

The form in this case is PA42 – Job requisition. The business requirement is to have a drop down list of the recruiters names that users can select from. When it is selected, it should populate the contact fields. Luckily, HR tracks recruiters with a User Field (50) that they set to ‘Y’ if the employee is a recruiter.

High level overview:

Make DME call to get list of Recruiters

Populate List

add function to the OnInit() event of the form

Please note that the code comments have been added to aid understanding.

function DropDownFill()
{
//DME call to get Recruiters
var strDME = "?PROD=" + portalWnd.oUserProfile.getAttribute("ProductLine") +
"&FILE=HREMPUSF&FIELD=EMPLOYEE.EMPLOYEE;EMPLOYEE.FIRST-NAME;EMPLOYEE.LAST-NAME;" +
"&INDEX=HEUSET3&KEY=50=Y=10==&XCOLS=TRUE&XKEYS=FALSE&XRELS=TRUE&XCOUNT=FALSE&XIDA=FALSE&OUT=XML&MAX=1000&SORTASC=EMPLOYEE.LAST-NAME";

//Make DME call and return to Portal storage
var httpDME = portalWnd.httpRequest(portalWnd.DMEPath + strDME);
var dsDME = new portalWnd.DataStorage(httpDME);

//We use try/catch here in case call returns no results. If the "record" element doesn't exist
//we don't want a js error on the page.
try {
var Recs = dsDME.document.getElementsByTagName("RECORD");
//	alert(Recs.length);
if (Recs.length == 0)
{
alert("No records");
return false;
}
}
catch(err)
{
alert("System Error. " + err);
return false;
}

//Read DME result set and populate to list
for (var i=0; i<Recs.length; i++)
{
arrCOL = Recs[i].getElementsByTagName("COL");
var strName = arrCOL[1].firstChild.nodeValue + " " + arrCOL[2].firstChild.nodeValue;
//Get our list element
var List = document.getElementById("VALUES_l172");
//create a new element to populate our values to, then append the span element to the list
var span = document.createElement("span");
span.setAttribute("text", strName); // long description
span.setAttribute("tran", arrCOL[0].firstChild.nodeValue); // transaction value
span.setAttribute("disp", strName); // display value
List.appendChild(span);
}
}

To update the page when a user selects a value in the list, create an onBlur event for the values element and use the Lawson provided setFormValue, to update the contact information.

function VALUES_OnBlur(id, row)
{
if (lawForm.getDataValueById("select2") != "")
lawForm.setFormValue("text102",lawForm.getDataValueById("select2"));

return true;
}

The second and third elements are meant to differentiate from “Mass Murder…”

General Definition of Mass Murder:

“A suicidal, rage-filled individual [who] slaughters a bunch of people at once; A disgruntled employee, for example, who shows up at his office with an automatic weapon and blows away a half a dozen co-workers before turning the gun on himself.”

Problems with the definition the FBI put in place:

It’s too broad…

It specifies that a serial killer has to kill “in three or more separate locations.” There are many who killed in one place;

i. Jeffrey Dahmer

ii. John Wayne Gacy

It doesn’t specify the “nature” of the crimes…

a. According to The Serial Killer Files by Harold Schechter, the modern serial killers all have one thing in common: “a strong component of depraved sexuality.”

This is dedicated to all of those hunting widows out there…I hope you had a great opening day of bow season.

There’s a phenomenon that takes over a vast number of the male species roundabout the mid to end of September. It’s the “gearing up for hunting season” phenomenon, or, as I life to refer to it more simply, the Fever.

I actually have two males of the species in the grips of the Fever to contend with. Lawson got his first taste of it last weekend, when there was an “open season” of sorts for kids. He got an eight-point buck all by himself, and has not let his father live it down yet that he did so when he was seven years-old, while Duane didn’t manage to kill his first buck until he was eleven. Na-na-na-na-boo-boo.

The Fever has clear and unmistakable symptoms, among them a suspicious increase of Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops packages delivered by UPS—so many that the friendly UPS man actually looks upon you with concern, asking, “so your husband’s a bowhunter, huh? How ‘bout we just send these back?” It’s further marked by a dining room table littered by various hunting apparatuses that must be moved nightly to another segment of the home—carefully, as not to disturb a fragile rest or sight that has been painstakingly positioned in just the right spot. Finally, the male temperament, usually so easygoing and peaceable, undergoes a significant and volatile alteration when in the grip of the Fever.

Take for instance the following example. Duane usually loves for me to cook supper. He adores it, in fact. He would grovel on the floor in abject humility…okay, I exaggerate. I don’t often have a great deal of time to cook these days, since Autumn’s tumbling and Lawson’s soccer schedules don’t let me get home until after seven p.m., most nights. But one night last week, I decided the heck with it…I’m cooking.

I planned everything carefully…the schedule permitted me to run Autumn to practice, run back home, prepare everything, get Law ready for soccer, have Duane take him to soccer, and then grant me just enough time to toss everything in the oven while I ran back out to pick Autumn up from practice, then run back home and have everything plated by the time Duane returned with Law from soccer. It was split-second perfect timing. I was pretty proud of myself for coordinating it, since I’m not exactly a domestic diva.

But that Fever took hold of my husband. He actually wanted me to skip cooking supper so he could Shoot His Bow. So it would be Perfect for Saturday.

We had pork chops, sweet potatoes, and butterbeans for supper that night, in case you were wondering.

I have a problem. Namely, that I work with Lawson Portal which requires IE. There are times when writing a custom HTML or Design Studio page when I store data in Arrays and then have to look up data from them later. Since IE doesn’t support the .indexOf for Arrays, how to find the info I need? When dealing with large lists of data, using loops just isn’t feasible, especially if I’m going to use the Array a lot. I could prototype the indexOf feature, but I have an easier way (depending on the data).

An example of this is what I’m working on currently. Our Finance department doesn’t want to give security access to the Lawson AP90 screen (Invoice lookup) to everyone in the enterprise because there are sensitive invoices (Legal bills, Employee re-imbursements, etc.), and there’s no good way to secure them. It’s a legitimate concern, but the problem is people need invoice information to manage and they shouldn’t have to wait on AP or Finance to get their information.

Luckily, our Finance department maintains attributes on each Accounting unit for Manager, VP, etc. that contains the user name. (For those of you who are not Lawson users, an Accounting unit is roughly equivalent to a department code). The most efficient solution is to only let users see invoices that are related to their department by creating an object that acts like an array of Accounting units when the page loads, and then comparing the Accounting Unit(s) for the requested invoice to the Object to determine whether to display or not. So this brings us to the question of “How do I search a javascript Array effectively?”.

The answer is use an Associative Array — which javascript does not support (technically). What we actually do is to assign properties to javascript’s Object.
(If you want to prototype the indexOf, see this link.)

Say we have a list of values like: 100000,100001,115000, 950000.

Normally we would do something like:

var arrAU = new Array(100000,100001,115000, 950000);
function lookupAU(strAU) {
for (var i=0;i<arrAU.length;i++)
{
if(arrAU[i] == strAU)
return true;
}
return false;
}

But what happens when we hit the VP or President level and there are hundreds or thousands of Accounting Units?

Instead we set the Object property to the Accounting Unit and set the value to some small value (because the value is irrelevant to us).

var arrAU = "";
arrAU['100000'] = true;
arrAU['100001'] = true;
arrAU['115000'] = true;
arrAU['950000'] = true;
function lookupAU(strAU) {
if (arrAU[strAU] != undefined)
return true;
else
return false;
}

So the answer to how to search arrays is that we don’t use arrays. The result is that we don’t waste the resources on the loop, and we get right to what we want in an IE supported manner. Please keep in mind that the .length property will not return the length because this is not an Array.

HTH

For those of you who use Lawson and would like to know more about the full process, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll be happy to share.

“Brittle” design isn’t limited to enterprise application software. You can find br

“Brittle” design isn’t limited to enterprise application software. You can find brittle design in cars, bridges, buildings, TVs, or even the vegetable bin. (What are those 1/2-pint boxes of $5.00 raspberries, 3/4 of which are moldy, but examples of brittle design?)

What do brittle designs have in common? The designer chose to accentuate high performance at the expense of other reasonable design parameters, like cost, reliability, usability, etc. A Ferrari goes very, very fast, and it feels good when it goes fast, and that’s a design choice. And it’s part of the design choice that the car requires a technician or two to keep it going fast for longer than an afternoon.

So why are most enterprise applications brittle? You can see this coming a mile away. It was a design choice. The enterprise applications in question were designed to be the Ferraris of their particular class of application. They were designed to do the most, have the most functionality, be the most strategic, appeal to the most advanced early adopters, be the most highly differentiated, etc.

To get Ferrari-like performance, they had to make the same design choices Ferrari did. They had to assume the application was perfectly tuned every time the key was turned, and they had to assume that the technicians were there to perform the tuning.

Enterprise applications, you see, were intended to run on the best, the highest-end machines (for their class). They were intended to be set up by experts. They were intended to be maintained by people who had the resources to do what was necessary. They were intended to satisfy the demands of good early-adopter customers who put a lot of pressure on them, with complex pricing schemes or intricate accounting, even if later on, it made setting the thing up complex, increased the chance that there were bugs, and made later upgrades expensive.

This wasn’t bad design; it was good design, especially from the marketing point of view. The applications that put the most pressure on every other design parameter got the highest ratings, attracted the earliest early adopters, recruited the most capable (and highest-cost) implementers, etc., etc. So they won in the marketplace and beat out other applications in their class that made different design choices.

I lived through this when I worked at QAD. At QAD, the founder (Pam Lopker) made different design choices. She built a simple app, one that was pretty easy to understand and pretty easy to set up and did the basics. And for about two years, shortly after I got there, she had the leading application in the marketplace. And then SAP and JDE and PeopleSoft came in and cleaned our clock with applications that promised to do more.

Now, none of the people who actually bought SAP instead of QAD back then or chose (later) to try to replace QAD with SAP did this because they really wanted high performance, per se. They wanted “value” and “flexibility” and “return on investment” and “marketable skills.” They literally didn’t realize that the value and flexibility came at a cost, that the cost was that the application was brittle and that therefore, the value or flexibility or whatever was only achievable if you did everything right.

If they had realized this, would they have made different choices?

I don’t know. I remember a company that made kilns in Pittsburgh that had been using QAD for many years. The company had been taken over by a European company that used SAP, and the CIO had been sent over from Germany to replace the QAD system with the one that was (admittedly) more powerful. He called me in (years after I had worked at QAD) to help him justify the project.

I looked at it pretty carefully, and I shook my head. Admittedly, the QAD product didn’t do what he wanted. But I didn’t like the fit with SAP. I was worried that the product designed for German kiln production just wasn’t going to work. I didn’t want to be right, and I was disappointed to find out that two years later, despite very disciplined and careful efforts, he was back in Germany and QAD was still running the company.

I’m glossing over a lot, of course. There are secondary effects. Very often, the first user of an application dominates its development, so the app will be tuned to the users strengths and weaknesses. It will turn out to be brittle for other users because they don’t have the same strengths. Stuff that was easy for the first user then turns out to be hard for others.

Two final points need to be made. First, when a brittle application works, it’s GREAT. It can make a huge difference to the user. Brian Sommer frequently points out that the first users of an application adopt it for the strategic benefit, but later users don’t. He thinks it’s because the benefit gets commoditized. But I think it’s at least partially because the first users are often the best equipped to get the strategic benefit, whereas later users are not. I think you see something of the same issue, too, in many of Vinnie Mirchandani’s comments about the value that vendors deliver (or don’t deliver).

Second, as to the cause of failure. Michael Krigsman often correctly says that projects are a three-legged stool and that the vendors are often blamed for errors that could just as easily be blamed on the customers. Dennis Moore often voices similar thoughts. With brittle systems, of course, they’re quite right; the failure point can come anywhere. But when they say this, I think they may be overlooking how much the underlying design has contributed.

It may be the technician’s fault that he dropped the beaker of nitrogycerin. But whose brilliant idea was it to move nitroglycerin around in a beaker?

If you’re using the XML node in Lawson Process Flow, you may need to do type conversion. The Assign nodes in PF will respect the type defined in the XML schema file. Dates are a good example of this.

Let’s say that you’re reading an element from an XML file that is a date type. When you read it, it is in the format of YYYY-MM-DD. To use this in an AGS or DME call, you will need to convert the format to something like YYYYMMDD or DD/MM/YYYY (depending on locality).

In this case, you must first convert the date to a string so you can perform ECMA (javascript) string manipulation. To make the conversion, use the String() function.

Example:

Sample XML -

<root><sample><updateDate>2009-01-01</updateDate></sample></root>

Convert to AGS format (LSF90)

var strDate = String(XMLNode_output.sample[0].updateDate);

strDate = strDate.replace(/-/g,”");

This will replace all of the “-” characters in the date string, resulting in a properly formatted AGS date string of “20090101″. For those not familiar with ECMA, the /g is for “global” replace.

HTH

Addendum – 20091009
Working with the output of the XML node today using numbers (decimal type specifically), I was noticing that it was not doing proper comparisons.

I had a node declared as decimal type with a value 0.01. In an assign node, I was doing:

if(XMLNode_output.sample[0].amount > 0)
foo();

In the result, it never did foo(). The only way I could get it to work was to explicitly convert the xml value to a number:

var dblAmount = new Number(XMLNode_output.sample[0].amount);

Based on this, it would appear that when using Lawson’s XML node, you should be prepared to do type conversions as necessary.

HTH
