Il Professor Layton ed il suo assistente Luke tornano per una nuova stupenda avventura. Stavolta sarete alla ricerca dello scrigno di Pandora e dovrete risolvere la solita sfilza di enigmi per poter proseguire nella storia. Mantiene tutte le grandi aspettative della vigilia e non deluderà sicuramente gli amanti del genere investigativo/logico.

Ace Attorney, ou originalmente Gyakuten Saiban no Japão, vai ser lançado para Wii, pelo serviço WiiWare. O primeiro jogo, Gyakuten Saiban: Yomigaeru Gyakuten terá os 4 primeiros cenários da versão de DS e sairá dia 15 de dezembro no Japão, por 900 Wii Points. Em seguida aparecem Gyakuten Saiban 2, por 1200 Wii Points, no dia 26 de janeiro de 2010, e Gyakuten Saiban 3, também por 1200 Wii Points e a ser lançado dia 23 de fevereiro de 2010. O quinto e último cenário do primeiro jogo será lançado depois, dia 16 de março, por 300 ienes. Anunciado apenas no Japão, mas a Capcom não vai dar a mancada de não lançar isso pelo mundo, né?

No More Heroes, jogo da Grasshopper Manufacture para o Wii, terá remakes para Xbox 360 e Ps3. Não joguei a versão Wii, nem quero. Não sei porque pagam tanto pau para o Suda 51 e para a Grasshopper. À direita, uma foto comparando as versões do Wii e do Xbox 360.

… É só eu ou a versão do Wii parece mais bonita? Bom, aparentemente o jogo é uma conversão em HD para os outros consoles e com controles tradicionais. Eu passo.

Bem, estamos a um dia do lançamento de Layton Kyouju to Majin no Fue (Professor Layton e a Flauta do Capeta), o quarto jogo da série Professor Layton e possivelmente o primeiro da trilogia que antecede a original. O jogo contará como Luke conheceu Layton e como virou seu aprendiz. Em comemoração, a Level-5 realizou um evento e já anunciou o próximo jogo da série: Layton Kyouju to Kiseki no Kamen (Professor Layton e a Máscara Milagrosa). Previsão de lançamento para o outono japonês de 2010.

Ah, e saiu o último trailer de Final Fantasy XIII, que eu ainda não vi e nem vou ver.

Mister Enigma alla ricerca dello scrigno di Pandora….

Eccoci giunti al secondo capitolo della fortunatissima trilogia sviluppata ed annunciata dai programmatori della Level 5. Tutti gli amanti dei giochi spremi-cervello posso prepararsi, perchè anche questa volta il nostro professore non tradisce!

Il Professore Layton e lo scrigno di Pandora è un gioco investigativo, un punta e clicca in cui, per proseguire nell’avventura, dovrete risolvere un enigma dopo l’altro, sempre più vari e difficoltosi con il proseguire della storia.

Tutto comincia con la morte del Dottor Andrew Shrader, amico del Professor Harsel Layton. Le circostanze del decesso sono misteriose, ma il fiuto ci porta a pensare che in tutto questo c’entri il famoso Scrigno di Elisi, più comunemente chiamato Scrigno di Pandora. Così, Layton e il suo compagno d’avventura, il giovane assistente Luke, cominciano ad investigare sull’accaduto e l’unico indizio è un biglietto di un treno chiamato Molentary Express, che però non riporta nessun’altra scritta sopra di esso. Qui parte l’avventura dei nostri protagonisti….

La grafica, come sempre accattivante e particolare, risulta di alto livello per un Nintendo DS e riesce a rendere il nostro viaggio serio e divertente allo stesso modo, enfatizzando al meglio ogni singolo momento.

La meccanica di gioco è rimasta invariata dal primo episodio. Ogni soluzione ad un enigma regala dei Picarati, proporzionati alla difficoltà  dell’interrogativo, che potranno essere spesi per bonus aggiuntivi. Durante il viaggio, cliccando su vari punti dello schermo (la sommità di un tetto, un cassetto di una scrivania) potrete trovare delle monete nascoste, i Picarati,  che vanno usate per ottenere aiuti durante gli enigmi. Non tutti gli enigmi sono utili all’avanzamento della storia principale, infatti anche questa volta, la Level 5 ha voluto rendere un po’ più appassionante il gioco che quest secondarie: sarete chiamati a costruire di una macchina fotografica pezzo per pezzo e, udite udite, dovrete far dimagrire un criceto obeso, fecendogli compiere dei percorsi tramite oggetti specifici.

Il comparto sonoro risulta anch’esso invariato, sempre in sintonia col paesaggio circostante. Melodie “vintage” si alternano a composizioni allegre, che riescono ad acchiappare l’utente e renderlo maggiormente partecipe dell’evento. Il doppiaggio è stato fortunatamente implementato con la nostra lingua e ciò contribuisce a rendere tutto più gradevole ai meno abbienti della lingua inglese e non.

Per quanto riguarda la longevità, il discorso è molto soggettivo. Il numero degli enigmi è molto elevato, parliamo di circa 150 enigmi; sta a voi risolverli tutti e nel meno tempo possibile. Inoltre è possobile ottenere delle estensioni con nuovi enigmi (si vocifera ben 52) tramite la WI FI Connection.

In conclusione, possiamo dire che pur non essendoci nuovi spunti rispetto al “Paese dei Misteri”, è stato mantenuto il trend positivo che tanto aveva contraddistinto il nostro professore. Gli amanti dei rompicapi possono dormire sonni tranquilli e preparare le meningi. L’unica pecca è il ritmo lento, che a non tutti può andar giù, però si può considerare un must per i possessori di Nintendo DS.

The Layton figure measures 13cm in height while Luke is slightly smaller in stature at 12cm. Preorders are welcome to ship in January 2010 at JPY2000 or US$28.90 from NCS.

All right, I suppose in reality rational politics have been dead for quite some time. So long, in fact, that the term has frankly become an oxymoron, becoming a punch line in much the same fashion as “efficient bureaucracy ” or “non-self-serving-politician”. And at one point, I certainly would have enjoyed laugh at the whole thing, but no more. The path we’re headed down is frightening. When I say “we” I very much mean all of us: Canadians. Certainly politics south of the 49th is ten fold more terrifying, but then again, their politics have been structured that way almost from the get go. Certainly, it has become significantly worse, but when you’re dealing with terrifying moving slowly to fuc- … I digress.

One thing I’ve always enjoyed about Canadian politics is how utterly boring it is. Day-to-day politics shouldn’t be interesting. It should be dull, dull, dull. The idea of going about the business of administering social programs, funding and the general running of the country should make normal people fall asleep. Of course we should be interested and keenly aware, but it should not be exciting.

The comparison I’ve often heard is that American elections are just so interesting and Canadian elections are mind-numbingly dull. But that’s a good thing. This is undeniably compounded by the fact that Americans love – crave even – an election every two years, and even the Presidential election starts two years ahead of time. Granted, I suppose we’re doing no better these days.

Here in Canada, an election is about issues, whereas an American election is about who took their flag-pin off or who can see Russia from their deck, or who is more patriotic, or who is a “socialist” or “secret Muslim”. That’s all fine and good, but what about discussing who is going to get the country out of unnecessary wars, or even, what wars are necessary. Or how about plans to reduce an out of control national debt.

Did you hear? Apparently Obama had dinner with a guy who in his youth blew up a statue. Gasp! He even attended a church who’s pastor once said “God damn America!”.

I don’t even know what church, if any, Harper attends. And I don’t care.

But none of this is the point. The death of rational politics isn’t caused by sensationalized media, but instead within the systems themselves. Sort of.

Politics began its slow death with the invention of the political party. Again, this happened much quicker south of the border than here, but for entirely different reasons.

In Canada we modelled and tweaked the British Parliamentary system to meet our own needs. The very basics of which provide that we as a people do not directly elect a Prime Minister, nor do we elect a party into government. Instead, we vote for our very own, regional representatives to provide our community a voice on the national stage.

Here’s where things start to go downhill.

Our system assumes if a majority of regions elects more representatives from one party, the overall public would like to see that party in power, and naturally if that party put its faith in their own leader, so too should we.

Now, I’m not suggesting this is a bad system, nor do I necessarily want to directly elect a Prime Minister.

What I am suggesting is that the general public has no idea this is the case. It’s widely assumed that a vote for, say, the Conservative party (regardless the individual’s name on the ballot) is a vote for Mr Harper.

This is so much a fallacy, that, even constitutionally, the party in government doesn’t even need more seats than any other single party. Hell, the government doesn’t even need to be formed by a single party. They need only have the confidence of the House. No more, no less. So back about a year ago, when Canadian politics briefly captivated the public and there was the threat of a coalition government, the Conservatives were miles out of line when they tried to convince the public this was an unconstitutional attempt at a power grab.

It may very well have been a “power grab”, but that’s utterly beside the point. It was an entirely constitutional play, and if we go back to that assumption wherein the government should be formed by the party with more seats, a coalition would have more seats and thus “must” form the government.

Here’s my issue with political parties: When it comes down to it, the whole thing is about power. And how do you come to power if you’re agreeing with the party in power. A party must oppose the others. But that’s not how government works. A government is supposed to be advancing the political will of the people. Surely this leads to some overlap, some compromise, some commonality somewhere.

This division serves only to fragment and destroy national unity. We see it everywhere. So called Conservatives yelling at and calling so called Liberals names, “leftists” yelling at “right-wingers”. The whole thing is absurd, and definitely not productive.

I’m not saying we all need to get along – far from it – in a country as massive and different from region to region as this, there is bound to be disagreement, sometimes big ones. Nor do we need to all align on a centrist platform. We can have a country of conservatives, of liberals (note the use of small ‘c’ and ‘l’), we can vote for different parties, but the idea that we must buy into only one ideology and platform is foolish.

I know it’s a pipe dream, but I would like to see political parties done away with. In all likelihood we would all suddenly take interest in our local representatives, after all, they’re not carrying a party banner. We’d have to, and hold on here, listen to their ideas. Gasp. Our local issues would get pushed on a national stage, as opposed to taking a back seat to the leaders ideologies (I’m looking at you Jason Kenney). Natural and dynamic coalitions would take place in the house, shifting as political issues shift.

But what about the Prime Minister? I would like to see the PM elected much the same way we elect a Speaker of the House. That is, elected MPs could submit themselves as candidates for the position and members of the house would vote.

Perhaps then the PM would have some accountability to the commons and not stuff the Senate with ridiculous former CTV anchors.

October 2009 home sales were up by only 3.03% though it was not as good as it was years back it was still a good sign that the home sales in Layton Utah Real Estate was still increasing. Layton Utah Homes for Sale

For the month of September of this year, there were about 75 homes sold in Layton Utah Real Estate. As compared to the previous months, it decreases a few slash in the number of homes sold. But generally, there is an annual increase of 12% gap compared to September of last year which is a good thing.

The median sold price for Layton homes was $179,900. The original list price was $189,900. The percent difference for the sold price and the original price reached up to 95%.

With the decrease in home prices and increase in defaulting home loans, Davis County Utah is seeing an increase in the number of homes being sold as Short Sales. There are currently 279 homes in Davis County currently listed that require short sale approval.  This represents 14.43 percent of all Davis County Homes for Sale.

Broken down by individual cities, Clearfield had the highest rate of short sales where  1 in 5 listed homes require bank approval. Bountiful had the lowest rate of listed short sales at just 7.7%.

Bountiful Short Sales – 17 of 219 homes listed require short sale approval. This is the lowest percentage for Davis County.

Centerville Short Sales – Centerville had just 11 listed properties that required short sale approval. With 102 listings this represents less than 11%.

Clearfield Utah Short Sales – Clearfield had a very high percentage of short sale homes as more than 20% of the properties currently for sale require bank approval. 30 of the 148 listed homes in Clearfield are short sales.

Clinton Short Sales – The rate of Short Sales in Clinton was above average for Davis County as 15.89% of the 151 homes for sale are short sales.

Farmington Short Sales – Farmington currently has 19 listed short sales. This is 15.32% of all Farmington home listings.

Kaysville Utah Short Sales – 16.3% of the 135 homes for sale in Kaysville are Short Sales.

Layton Utah Short Sales – Layton has 57 short sales currently for sale, more than any other city in Davis County. With 410 total listings though the percentage of short sales is less than average at 13.9%

North Salt Lake Short Sales – 12.15% of the 181 listed homes in North Salt Lake are Short Sales. Many of these homes are very large and expensive.

Syracuse Utah Short Sales – Syracuse also has a high rate of short sales with 16.59% of the 211 listed homes requiring bank approval.

The short sale rate for the smaller cities in Davis County Utah is also higher than the average. The smaller Davis County communities including Fruit Heights, Woods Cross, West Bountiful, Sunset, and West Point had a short sale rate of 16.67% combined.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Despite it being my final year of school, I’ve played quite a bit in the last ten months or so. Some new titles, some older ones. Not really earning anything I’d call reliable income at the moment so a lot of my purchases are games from two or more years ago that have dropped in price. It’s a decent tactic all round, but especially worthwhile in Australia where games are overpriced to hell. The example I’ll always use to put this into perspective is GTA IV. Back at its release date in early 2008 when the Aussie and American dollar were almost 1:1, Americans paid US $60, we paid AUS $120. No-fucking-thanks.

Here’s a quick run down of the games I’ve experienced for the first time over these months though, not necessarily new titles, along with a sentence review for each. Aaaaaand… go.

Megaman 9: Brutal gameplay with death traps designed to catch you out the first time through, but ultimately rewarding and fun. 4/5
Portal Still Alive: Brilliantly unique and innovative fun, one of my new favourite games. 5/5
Braid: Fantastically emotional music alongside some absolutely mind bending puzzles. 5/5
Gears of War 2: Bit too much emotional story for a Gears game but very rewarding and satisfying gameplay. 5/5
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption: Great controls and visuals but not the way I’d like this trilogy to be wrapped up. 4/5
Professor Layton & the Curious Village: Fantastic collection of brainteasers with a really neat narrative and a really cool cartoony visual style to tie them together. 5/5
Wii Fit: Not really the game for me but all the same there are better methods of exercise I’d recommend. 3/5
Bioshock: Brilliant claustrophobic environment with a gripping narrative. 5/5
The Maw: Cool platform/adventure game albeit a bit short and lacking imagination. 4/5
Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise: More like an expansion pack of the original game, but still good for franchise newcomers. 4/5
Quantum of Solace DS: Rubbish bargain bin game fully controlled via the touchscreen with the DS held on its side. 1/5
Chrono Trigger DS: Easily amoung the best RPGs of all time, should’ve been released in PAL regions a lot earlier. 5/5
Pokemon Platinum: Some nice additions, probably the definitive Pokemon game, but if you have Diamond/Pearl and aren’t a hardcore fan it isn’t worth it. 3/5
Half Life 2 Xbox Edition: Good bargain-priced game, but this version’s lag and visuals make me want to get the Orange Box instead. 3/5.

So there you go. And even though that’s a pretty big list for one blog, there’s so many things I’ve missed out on that it’s really getting on my nerves. I wrote up a list of games I really had to play and/or beat according to the top lists of others a little while ago, and it’s already in the eighties. Some of the games on the list are pretty embarrassing to not have played yet, but all the same if there’s a bunch of classics out there like Chrono Trigger that I’m still yet to taste, bring them the fuck on.

Damas y caballeros, coged vuestra taza de té y adoptad el más puro acento inglés porque hoy es Martes y toca Layton.  Pero antes, ¿me podríais resolver este puzzle?

Si la respuesta es no, ya podéis dejar de leer, porque no os interesará nada esta serie de juegos. Porque en el universo Layton, si no sabes resolver puzzles ni te gustan, serás un paria. Durante todo el juego te pedirán que resuelvas puzzles para las cosas más absurdas o para cosas realmente importantes. Creo yo que si por alguna casualidad espacio temporal chunga viajásemos dentro del videojuego, no podríamos ni ir al baño sin resolver un puzzle antes. En fin, si te entretienen mucho los puzzles, como en mi caso, el juego se te hará muy llevadero, y sino, la historia tras los puzzles os impulsará a terminarlo.

De la mano del profesor Layton, arqueólogo y maestro en el mundillo de los puzzles, y de su pupilo Luke nos meteremos de lleno en la aventura y el misterio. A lo largo de las dos aventuras disponibles en español (es una trilogía) tendremos un surtido de escenas de anime bastante curradas que aderezarán los ya de por si interesantes argumentos y una bonita banda sonora, que siempre crea mucho ambiente. La verdad es que a medida que juguéis, los puzzles pasaran a ser algo secundario y la historia tomará el control.

No tengo más palabras para este juego, o no las sé poner por escrito,  pero una cosa sé seguro: es un gran juego. Y, aunque los puzzles no sean lo vuestro, el anime os deje frío o quizá los sombreros de copa no os gusten, dadle una oportunidad a este juego y os digo que no os arrepentireis.

My review of Brutal Legend is going up on bit-tech today, with a second review going up on Den of Geek in a few days. I’ll save you the tension and just say that the game is awesome; I love it. Honestly, I found it quite hard to write the bit-tech review, but once I got going it was OK – my main problem was trying to make it clear that the main fault of the game is an array of somewhat bland gameplay tropes. The characters, plot and multiplayer make up for it though. I actually met Tim Schafer again not long ago, asking him a bunch of questions and getting him to sign my copy of Grim Fandango. He was very much like I expected; quietly uncomfortable with the reputation that’s been built around him and not totally willing to be serious for more than five minutes thanks to a very shrewd sense of wit and quietly mumbling voice.

In other news, I’ve been reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand lately and I really like that too. Unlike most books that are actually about explaining a deeper philosophy, Atlas Shrugged doesn’t stray into the usual diatribes and monologue bollocks. Instead, it just stays with a really interesting array of characters who communicate their philosophies by their interactions with the world around them. The book is well written too – something I didn’t wholly get from The Old Man and The Sea by Hemmingway, which I finished reading just before hand. I can’t believe that won a Nobel Prize for literature in all honesty;  the Christ imagery was semi-interesting and all, but it’s no compensation for a dull plot and staid writing.

I also did a column in the latest issue of CustomPC Magazine that I’m quietly proud of, asking whether PC Games Journalism is mired in Nostalgia. On a somewhat ironic counterpoint, I’ve been playing Duke Nukem 3D on the iPhone an awful lot.

I also went away for a weekend with Ed from TrustedReviews and Hannah and we learned how to skin a deer, make jerky and survive for 48 hours in Wales.

Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box (Nintendo DS) Review

This is one of the best DS games I have ever played.
I had the original Proffesor Layton game which is good, but I believe this one is even better. In story mode alone this game will keep you occupied for hours, but there are also loads of bonus features to keep you going long after you have completed the main part of the game. The puzzles can be difficult and at times frustrating but mostly they are very well done. And the only one thing I would say on this point is that the game will probably be too difficult for children under high school age (but for adults its great!).

Overall this is a very good game and well worth buying, unlike so many DS games out there at the moment, if you buy this you will not be disappointed.

As the dragon circles round and round chasing its tail, it leaps up to two meters and travels through a Chinese pagoda that is over 40 feet tall.”
