<title><![CDATA["Passed Out Of Death" (John 11: 25, ESV) by Carley Evans]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><div>&#8220;We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.&#8221; (1 John 3: 14)</p>
<p>Lazarus is dead; he lies in his grave, his body spiced and wrapped. He has been in the grave four days when Jesus arrives in Bethany. Martha meets Jesus as He approaches, saying to Him, &#8220;Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask from God, God will give You.&#8221; (John 11: 21) Jesus tells Martha that Lazarus will rise again. Martha figures Jesus is referring to the future resurrection to occur on the last day. But Jesus says, &#8220;I Am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.&#8221;</p>
<p>The life Jesus gives is for the present time.</p>
<p>Jesus finds Mary weeping, and He is &#8220;deeply moved in His spirit and greatly troubled.&#8221; (John 11: 33) He weeps with Mary. At Lazarus&#8217; tomb, Jesus commands the stone to be moved from the cave where Lazarus&#8217; body is entombed. Martha is concerned about decay and odor for her brother has been dead four days. Jesus is focused on His heavenly Father&#8217;s glory. He calls Lazarus to come out. Lazarus does. Jesus says to Mary, Martha and others, &#8220;Unbind him, and let him go.&#8221; (John 11: 44)</p>
<p>Jesus unbinds us from the grip of death; He loosens the ties and lets us go. &#8220;Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?&#8221; (1 Corinthians 15: 55)</p>
<p>Jesus loves us. He tells us, &#8220;Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.&#8221; (John 15: 13) He says, &#8220;I came that [My friends] may have life and have it abundantly. I Am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.&#8221; (John 10: 10 &#8211; 11)</p></div>

<title><![CDATA[Living in the Moment And For the Moment]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I have just spent a few wonderful days visiting with some of my best friends in this world. I am always encouraged and blessed by these friendships and I always leave wanting to stay a little longer and have just one more conversation over just one more cup of coffee.</p>
<p>Good things are like that, we savor them and we want more. There is a desire within all of us to try to hold onto that which we feel is good for us and good to us. We don&#8217;t always appreciate it the way we should, but we want for more of these moments.</p>
<p>I have frequently imagined what it must have been like to be with Jesus, walking the earth with the one who stilled the sea, fed the masses with a little boys lunch and called the dead back to life out of their coffins and tombs. The amazement of those moments, I would have loved to experience the simple awe and wonder of seeing the most amazing things take place right before you. This wasn&#8217;t imaginative story telling where you are captivated by the turn of the plot or a twist of a phrase, this was real life and real live action. Moments in life to relish.</p>
<p>With Christmas approaching, I can&#8217;t wait to see my kids on that morning, filled with anticipation, wanting so badly to rip into those presents under the tree&#8230; but they will have to wait for just a few moments while we read the Christmas story and get together a cup of coffee for mom and dad. But it is their moment, their time to experience the joy of getting a gift. Personally, I love giving the gifts as much if not more than getting a gift. Seeing the wondering looks on their faces searching their minds to see if they might know what is in the box.</p>
<p>God has really been working in my heart these last few months about the idea of the moment. As Christians we talk a lot about vision, numbers, statistics, programs and goals for the church. As people we talk about hopes and dreams for the future. As parents we wonder about the future of our kids and making sure that they are adequately prepared for what will come. But are we missing too much of God&#8217;s work in our life because we are too focused on somewhere other than now? As Christians are we failing to love people as they are, because we are wanting them to be something else? As parents, are we not enjoying our children in the moment, because we are too focused on preparing them for not being children? As people, are we discounting the blessings of today because we are looking down the road to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?</p>
<p>It would be like sitting with one of my friends this past week and being so consumed by the fact that I would have to leave, that I failed to enjoy their company. I would miss a great moment. I would miss the precious time I had with them. Instead, I lived in the moment, soaking in the good that I was experiencing.</p>
<p>When we are experiencing good times, we can think about the fact that it will come to an end. When we are experiencing bad times, we can&#8217;t wait for it to end. When we are in dull and boring times, we think it will never end.  But what about the moment you are in?  What abut this moment that you have?</p>
<p>Maybe your life isn&#8217;t everything you want it to be right now. All of us could probably pinpoint a few things that we wish would be different or that we know are not going to last or are worried about. But let&#8217;s not miss the God factor in our life. Think of a few Biblical examples&#8230;</p>
<p>* When the children of Israel were up against the Red Sea and Pharoah&#8217;s army was approaching. What do you think many of them were thinking about?  They were imagining getting slaughtered, run over, injured, captured and taken back into slavery. (<a href="http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Exd&#38;c=14&#38;v=1&#38;t=NKJV#top" target="_blank">Exodus 14</a>)</p>
<p>* When King Jehoshaphat was told that he was surrounded by a large army, he was afraid and admitted that he had no idea what to do. He was facing the end of his rule and the defeat of his army.  (<a href="http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?t=NKJV&#38;b=2Ch&#38;c=20&#38;v=1&#38;x=0&#38;y=0" target="_blank">II Chronicles 20</a>)</p>
<p>* Simeon had been waiting in the temple for the Messiah to come. God had promised that he would see the child, not when the child would come, just that he would see the child. He had not seen it yet, so had he missed it?  Did he really hear God say that? (<a href="http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Luk&#38;c=2&#38;v=25&#38;t=NKJV#25" target="_blank">Luke 2:25-35</a>)</p>
<p>* When Lazarus died, Mary and Martha wondered why Jesus had not come to his aid quickly.  &#8220;If only you had been here&#8221; were their words. They grieved at the loss of their brother. (<a href="http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&#38;c=11&#38;t=NKJV" target="_blank">John 11:1-44</a>)</p>
<p>Then, seemingly out of nowhere, their moment arrived&#8230;</p>
<p>* God opened the Red Sea through Moses</p>
<p>* God spoke through a prophet and gave Jehoshaphat direction on how to defeat his enemy by sending the musicians and singers in front of the army</p>
<p>* God brought the Christ child to Simeon to bless</p>
<p>* Jesus arrived at the tomb of Lazarus and told them to open it</p>
<p>Each of them then lived in the moment&#8230;</p>
<p>* The people crossed over on dry land, and saw Pharoah&#8217;s army swallowed by the sea</p>
<p>* Jehoshaphat did as God commanded and watched as his enemies turned on one another and killed one another giving him peace</p>
<p>* Simeon recognized God&#8217;s messiah and blessed the child, getting to see God fulfill His prophecy</p>
<p>* Mary and Martha watched as Jesus returned their brother to them by calling him out of the tomb</p>
<p>But what if&#8230;.</p>
<p>* not believing God, some of the Israelites had believed their fate was sealed and marched back toward Pharoah&#8217;s army just hoping they would survive?</p>
<p>* Jehoshaphat thought the plan God spoke was ridiculous and sent his army out to fight against overwhelming numbers?</p>
<p>* Simeon had grown tired of waiting and in his frustration had taken to sitting in the back room, allowing others to receive the children as they came into the temple?</p>
<p>* Mary and Martha had walked away from Jesus, believing that He had betrayed them by not coming sooner?</p>
<p>&#8230;they would be like many of us, living in our own world, our own disappointments, frustrations, and they would have completely missed the moment with God.</p>
<p>Imagine this. Your child wakes up on Christmas morning and won&#8217;t get out of bed because they believe that you did not buy them that new bike they wanted. &#8220;Come and open your gifts&#8221; you tell them, it will be fun. &#8220;No&#8221;, I just know you haven&#8217;t bought me my new bike.&#8221;  All the while, waiting in the living room is their brand new bike, with a bell, streamers and all. You have looked forward to sharing this moment with them. They have had to wait, but you knew this moment was coming.  Now what?</p>
<p>I sometimes wonder if God does not feel that way with us. He is ready to move, ready to work in us, bless us, renew us, ready for us to experience a moment with Him. Yet it seems often our mind and heart is too consumed with either what has been or what might be or what has not happened&#8230; and we allow our fears, our hurt, our disappointments, our fatigue, even our sins to control our hearts &#8230; and we miss Him. I don&#8217;t want that in my life, I want my faith to be stretched, to imagine greater things.</p>
<p>Just imagine what it must have been like to walk on the dry land through the Red Sea and look up and know the hand of God was holding the waters at bay. Wow!</p>
<p>Just imagine what Jehoshaphat must have felt as he looked out on the battlefield and saw God use a bunch of singers and musicians to destroy his enemy before his eyes. Unbelievable!</p>
<p>Just imagine Simeon placing Jesus back into the arms of Mary, knowing that God has just fulfilled His promise by sending a Messiah, in the form of a little baby. He  must have danced and smiled his way back home. Yes!</p>
<p>Just imagine Mary and Martha standing in awe and shock as Jesus simply spoke three words, &#8220;Lazarus come forth&#8221;, and their brother rose from the dead and walked out of the tomb! Awesome!</p>
<p>I want more of that in my Christian walk. No more same old, nothing ever happens, told you it would never work, go through the motions, we&#8217;ve never done it that way, I&#8217;m tired of dealing with it, kind of Christianity that no longer looks to God to do something awe-inspiring. I want the moment. I want to live in the moments with God. No, I am not seeking a sign, I am seeking anticipation&#8230; expectation&#8230;faith in every moment to believe&#8230; for the supernatural, all-powerful, amazing God to do, well, what He can do. To rise up out of bed and believe that the bike is really there&#8230; then jump on it, ring the bell and watch the streamers flap in the wind as I ride down the road.</p>
<p>I have had lots of moments with God- my salvation, watching God provide for us financially, watching Him provide jobs for us, heal family members and friends, save people we have ministered to, transform people who have been away from Him&#8230;. and I have relished every moment. Henry Blackaby in his <a href="http://www.christianbook.com/experiencing-god-15th-anniversary-edition/henry-blackaby/9780805432008/pd/432000?item_code=WW&#38;netp_id=338714&#38;event=ESRCN&#38;view=details" target="_blank">Experiencing God</a> material calls these things spiritual markers. Moments in life we know God has worked and we have planted a stake in the ground to mark the occasion. I look forward to planting that next stake. All of God&#8217;s work, all of my spiritual markers have brought me to this point&#8230; and I anticipate that, no matter my current situation, that  a stake-planting moment is just ahead&#8230; and I don&#8217;t want to miss it.</p>

God we don&#8217;t want to miss a moment with you. Help our eyes and our heart not to lose focus on you. Help us not to give in to our frustrations and doubts so that we turn our head from watching for your hand.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Today Lord, right now&#8230; I have my stake in my hand&#8230;ready for you and I to experience a moment together&#8230;so I can plant that stake in the ground and forever remember this as a day, a time, where together we lived in the moment and for the moment.</p></blockquote>

<p>In <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Frost" target="_blank">Robert Frost</a>&#8217;s 1936 volume, <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=5E0xAAAAMAAJ&#38;q=a+further+range+by+robert+frost&#38;dq=a+further+range+by+robert+frost&#38;ei=7KAXS-u0F6OykAT1pOXcCw" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">A Further Range</span></a>, appears a section archly titled &#8220;Ten Mills.&#8221; It is a suite of ten short poems—some of them epigrams of a sort—originally published in the April 1936 issue of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poetry_Magazine" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Poetry</span></a> magazine. A mill, of course, is one-tenth of a cent (a sense fallen now almost entirely out of use). Which is to say, in this little suite of very brief, and very mischievous, poems, Frost is putting not his proverbial &#8220;two-cents&#8221; in, but merely <em>one</em>. The last of the &#8220;ten mills&#8221; is the following poem, which has always struck as by far the most interesting among them. In fact, at times I find it baffling. A bit of lore lies behind the poem, chiefly having to do with its title. But first, the poem itself, which is done up curtly in couplets, each line of which bears four accents (the ratio of accent to syllable is not regular):</p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;"><span style="color:#800000;"><em>&#8220;In Divés Dive&#8221;</em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;"><span style="color:#800000;"><em>It is late at night and still I am losing,<br />
But still I am steady and unaccusing.</em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;"><span style="color:#800000;"><em>As along as the Declaration guards<br />
My right to be equal in number of cards,</em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;"><span style="color:#800000;"><em>It is nothing to me who runs the dive.<br />
Let&#8217;s have a look at another five.</em></span></p>
<p>And now for the lore. In the <a href="http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/www/Vulgate/" target="_blank">Latin Vulgate</a> version of the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Bible</span>, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Luke</span> 16:19-31, we read the following: (N.B. <p>In short, by tradition, &#8220;Divés&#8221; <em>is</em> the name given to &#8220;that certain rich man&#8221; [<em>homo quidam erat <strong>dives</strong></em>] in most commentaries on the parable of the beggar Lazarus; and it is <em>he</em> who runs the &#8220;dive&#8221; of Frost&#8217;s poem. Frost places us, then, in a cheap gambling dive, in the middle of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression_in_the_United_States" target="_blank">Great Depression</a>, run by a corrupt rich man bound for Hell. And Frost&#8217;s &#8220;steady and unaccusing&#8221; speaker, the man doing all the &#8220;losing,&#8221; somehow takes heart from the fact that, so long as &#8220;the Declaration guards [his] right to be equal in number of cards,&#8221; it is &#8220;nothing to [him] who runs the dive.&#8221; All he wants is &#8220;a look at another five&#8221;—five <em>cards</em>, that is, as in a &#8220;deal.&#8221; The game in question is obviously <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker" target="_blank">poker</a>. And the poem is just as obviously <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory" target="_blank">allegorical</a>. The &#8220;house rules&#8221; in this &#8220;dive&#8221; are, it appears, those of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence" target="_blank">Declaration of Independence</a>: <em>&#8220;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.&#8221;</em> The general metaphor underlying the poem could not be any clearer:</p>
<p><strong>America is a cheap gambling dive run by corrupt and wealthy men; to be in America is to be in Divés dive.</strong></p>

<p>But what we are to make of this metaphor, how we are to take it? That&#8217;s no easy question to answer. Consider a thought experiment, along these lines: Read the poem <em>not</em> as written by Robert Frost, but as written instead, say, by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langston_Hughes" target="_blank">Langston Hughes</a>, in his fellow-traveling Communist days in the 1930s. Hughes might well have written such a poem (and as Frost himself was told in conversation with the poet <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_Brown" target="_blank">Sterling Brown</a>, &#8220;Divés,&#8221; and the parable in which he figures, was a theme touched on in Negro Spirituals, for reasons perfectly obvious). We might then conclude: <em>Well, obviously, Hughes is saying what any poet on the far left during the &#8217;30s might have said: The <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Declaration</span>, and every other guarantee of &#8216;equal protection under the law,&#8217; are nothing but ideological shams. The nation had been, was, and always will be—short of a second revolution—one run by, and in the interests of, the wealthy and the corrupt. And anyone who thinks otherwise, as the &#8220;unaccusing&#8221; gambler in the poem apparently does, is a naïve fool. For who but a fool would <span style="text-decoration:underline;">ever</span> go into a &#8220;dive&#8221; run by the likes of Divés and lay a single dollar on the table? Clearly this poem is a clever and wicked satire not merely of America, but of anyone who expected, say, that the &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Deal" target="_blank">New Deal</a>&#8221; (&#8220;let&#8217;s have a look at another five!&#8221;) was anything other than a measure meant to shore up capitalism, by curbing its excesses, so as to save it from committing suicide.</em></p>
<p>What&#8217;s the use of this thought experiment? To illustrate, among other things, how thoroughly we let knowledge about the author of a poem govern our reading of it—<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_the_Author" target="_blank">Roland Barthes</a> &#38; <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Foucault" target="_blank">Michel Foucault</a> notwithstanding. <!--more-->Most middling readers of Frost simply take it for granted that he couldn&#8217;t <em>possibly</em> hold any such views as those just entertained in our little experimental attribution of the poem to (say) Langston Hughes. Surely, they think, there must be something else afoot. Surely no man is altogether a fool to place his faith in the guarantees of the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Declaration</span> and the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Constitution</span> (with, say, its <a href="http://www.law.cornell.edu/anncon/html/amdt14a_user.html#amdt14a_hd1" target="_blank">14th amendment</a>, making good, at least on paper, Jefferson&#8217;s great promise of &#8220;equality&#8221;). And though it be true that the parable of Lazarus figured in the sorrow songs of the slaves, we find it in a number of English ballads dating back centuries, and from the other side of the Atlantic altogether. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Crashaw" target="_blank">Richard Crashaw</a> wrote two quatrains on the theme in his <a href="http://www.archive.org/details/stepstotemplede00crasgoog" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Steps to the Temple</span></a>. It is a veritable commonplace (though, admittedly, Frost gives it specifically American coordinates).</p>

<p>But let&#8217;s take ourselves for something more than your middling reader of Frost. And then let&#8217;s see what we make of the poem. It raises a number of questions, of course: To what extent is personal prosperity a &#8220;gamble&#8221; in a nation that considers itself a &#8220;democracy&#8221;? To what extent <em>should</em> prosperity be a gamble in such a nation? In reading &#8220;In Divés Dive,&#8221; we do well to bear in mind what Frost says in his 1935 Introduction to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._A._Robinson" target="_blank">E.A. Robinson</a>&#8217;s <span style="text-decoration:underline;">King Jasper</span>:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Yester­day in conversation, I was using &#8216;<a href="http://www.poetryfoundation.org/archive/poem.html?id=174243" target="_blank">The Mill</a>.&#8217; Robinson could make lyric talk like drama. What imagination for speech in &#8216;<a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/john-gorham/" target="_blank">John Gorham</a>&#8216;! He is at his height between quotation marks.</em></p>

<p><em>&#8216;There are no millers any more.&#8217; It might be an edict of the New Deal against processors (as we now dignify them). But no, it is of wider application. It is a sinister jest at the expense of all investors of life or capital. The market shifts and leaves them with a car-barn full of dead trolley cars. At twenty I commit myself to a life of re­ligion. Now, if religion should go out of fashion in twenty-five years, there would I be, forty-five years old, unfitted for any­thing else and too old to learn anything else. It seems immoral to have to bet on such high things as lives of art, business, or the church. But in effect, we have no alternative. None but an all-­wise and all-powerful government could take the responsibility of keeping us out of gambling or of insuring us against loss once we were in.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Really? This is cold comfort, if we take Frost at his word. I&#8217;m not all in for it. There&#8217;s more than a little overstatement in the phrasing here: <em>&#8220;None but an all-­wise and all-powerful government could take the responsibility</em>&#8230;.&#8221; Well, ought a partly-wise and moderately powerful government take due responsibility for ameliorating the larger risks of living and working in a decidedly capitalist economy? And isn&#8217;t that what FDR had attempted to do with such institutions as the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FDIC" target="_blank">FDIC</a> an the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEC" target="_blank">SEC</a>?</p>
<p>And yet, with &#8220;In Divés Dive,&#8221; nuances and complexities remain. All manner of queries and provocations hang about it, as if to make good sport of (or with) the reader. Does Jefferson&#8217;s old adage have anything to do with &#8220;outcomes,&#8221; so to speak? Does it have more to do with equality in opportunity than with equality in results? Does it have <em>anything at all</em> to do with &#8220;equality&#8221; in the &#8220;results&#8221; of (say) our several hundred million American &#8220;gambles&#8221; in our several hundred million American lives? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn&#8217;t. And for that matter, are &#8220;New Deal&#8221; policies—don&#8217;t forget that terminal line: &#8220;Let&#8217;s have a look at another five&#8221;;—are New Deal policies that aim at marginalizing personal risk warranted by either the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Declaration</span> or the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Constitution</span>, no matter what value they may have in themselves? <em>And does it even matter whether or not these efforts to marginalize risk, and to protect the weak from the worst abuses of the Capital, have a &#8220;constitutional&#8221; warrant, or some other sort of authority—say, vested in Jefferson&#8217;s immortal words?</em> Indeed it might <em>not</em> matter. Hence our ongoing debate, even unto the autumn of 2009.</p>
<p>And still harder questions remain. Does Frost &#8220;parody&#8221; or &#8220;cite&#8221; the view taken of America in the poem before us here—that is to say, the Langstonian view of it I took in my thought experiment—and then step aside, as if to say: &#8220;I&#8217;m not giving it a Yea or a Nay—don&#8217;t try to fix me <em>there</em>.&#8221; Or, could the poem be a kind of playful enigma, tossed out to Frost&#8217;s leftist critics—the ones who&#8217;d been after him ever since 1928—as if to say: &#8220;Here. Deal with <em>this</em>, if you&#8217;re so sure you&#8217;ve got me pegged as some sort of reactionary.&#8221; And must we reach a conclusion as to whether or not Frost expects his readers, of whatever stripe, to regard his &#8220;unaccusing&#8221; American &#8220;gambler,&#8221; firm in his faith in the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Declaration</span>, <em>as a damn fool</em>? I can hardly read the poem otherwise myself (though I can imagine a reader who <em>might</em> shake his head at me for doing so). For who <em>but</em> an idiot would keep up the gamble &#8220;late into the night&#8221; in a joint identified for us as &#8220;<em>Divés</em> dive&#8221;? How much patience, in the face of how much loss, is <em>too</em> much patience in the face of <em>too</em> much loss? Everybody knows that the &#8220;House Always Wins&#8221; with its <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_default_swaps" target="_blank">credit default swaps</a>—that the &#8220;House&#8221; always gets its &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bailout_of_the_U.S._financial_system" target="_blank">bailouts</a>,&#8221; even as &#8220;gamblers&#8221; in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub-prime_mortgage" target="_blank">sub-prime mortgages</a> lose their three-bedroom bungalows on the south side of Chicago, or their ranch-houses in Florida.</p>
<p>What to say by way of conclusion? That Frost, yet again, is &#8220;rumpling our brains,&#8221; as he liked to put it. He&#8217;s messing with us. And I append here two little-known observations Frost made on the subject of capitalism, of which he was well-prepared to be wary. Both are printed in <a href="http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog/FROCOL.html" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">The Collected Prose of Robert Frost</span></a> (Harvard, 2007). The first is taken from Lawrance Thompson&#8217;s otherwise unpublished &#8220;Notes on Conversations with Robert Frost.&#8221; In it you will find this account of a 21 February 1940 conversation with Frost: &#8220;In his ideas on politics he thinks of civilization as giving us a right to indulge our individualities, our eccentricities, even our perversions. A government is like a great breathing monster—giving out greater freedom, liberty, license—and then at times taking it in. A communal state is a taking in. A democracy is a letting out. But even a democracy, in time of war, calls all its liberties in, temporarily, for the communal good. <em><strong>Capital in Wall Street indulges its liberties to the extent of perversion and then is checked</strong></em>.&#8221; The second observation dates from a visit Frost made to Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1954, to attend the World Congress of Writers. Frost delivered the following remarks in English. They were subsequently translated into Portuguese for publication in the official proceedings of the Congress, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Congresso International de Escritores e Encontros Inteletuais</span> (Sau Paulo, 1957). Robert Johnson of the University of Massachusetts then translated them back into English at the request of G. Stanley Koehler of the Department of English at Amherst. The text of Johnson’s translation is held both at Amherst College and at the Jones Library, Amherst. I reprint it here with a few emendations suggested by Barbara Joels of Rutgers University, who (years ago, now) kindly agreed to check-read Johnson’s translation against the original Portuguese. Johnson, in passing his translation along to Koehler, adds in passing that Frost’s remarks “must have left quite a few delegates with mouths ajar.” One can readily see why. Following is the better part of Frost’s speech at the Congress, as refracted through Portuguese and back into English: “Our basic principle—that of Americans I mean—is somewhat complex. But note: John Adams was the man who decided upon our separation from the Old World, Europe. He imagined, for example, that there scarcely existed between us a degree of kinship. Afterward, Tom Paine noted that the war was not so much a war of separation but rather one for liberty and the inspiration of the French Revolution. Now, that man almost had his head chopped off, having escaped because he fled from his prison thanks to a fortunate accident. <em><strong>But our world did not revolt struggling for equality; scarcely anything was done in equality’s name.</strong></em> The great realization, the real consequence of the revolution was the separation, and I should be greatly troubled if we remained separate from Europe—the Old World—without demonstrating some originality to the world. Because I always want to have the hope and satisfaction of knowing that we possess something new and fresh to contribute to the future of humanity. <em><strong>The enthusiasm for equality, for the distribution of land, wealth, and finally the enthusiasm for humanity—that enthusiasm disappeared from our earth, and I can see nothing through the Iron Curtain. The truth of the matter is that everything disappeared with the disappearance of Tom Paine.</strong></em> <em><strong>Another point that we must observe is the following. </strong><strong>We must avoid a great danger that threatens us: big capitalism that never remembers to hold back, to restrict itself. It is necessary that big capitalism remain constantly under observation, principally by other countries. The saving grace is that our army never adhered to big capitalism, for, if this were to happen, it would be our end.&#8221;</strong></em></p>

But the poem as a whole is well worth reprinting here, as a bitter envoy. &#8220;The Mill&#8221; records two suicides, undertaken out of despair created by the &#8220;great progress&#8221; of industrial capitalism in the late 19th century—owing, indeed, to what would come to be represented by the <a href="http://www.pillsbury.com/" target="_blank">Pillsbury</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillsbury_Doughboy" target="_blank">Doughboy</a>.</em></p>

<title><![CDATA[I'm glad I wasn't there]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>A couple of nights ago my family and I attended a stage performance of Annie.  We were all very familiar with the movie versions, but this one had a scene that was unfamiliar: The setting is the White House and President Roosevelt is meeting with his cabinet; we hear them lamenting the horrible state of the economy and the plight of the poor and destitute.  In comes Annie and Oliver Warbucks and of course Annie brings her eternal optimism that the sun will come out tomorrow.  The cabinet is encouraged by her refrain and begins to brainstorm how to fix all the problems facing them and in the end the President comes up with the &#8220;New Deal.&#8221;  I couldn&#8217;t help but reflect on our current economy and the parallels that have been made between the &#8220;New Deal&#8221; of President Roosevelt and our current administration.</p>
<p>There are those who see the fault in a government trying to fix everyone&#8217;s problems, and I completely agree that it is not the government&#8217;s role to make everyone happy and equal.  And, yet this is what each one of us does every time we step in and play God&#8230;trying to fix whatever hard-knocks are in our life or the life of a loved-one.</p>
<p>Like the New Deal, we create temporary jobs or wealth that gives a false sense of security rather than allowing life to play itself out.  When we see a loved-one suffering we create a new deal to cushion their hurts, when instead we should let them ride out this storm so they can learn and grow from it. I&#8217;m sure to some this sounds callous, I don&#8217;t mean it that way.  There are indeed times that the Lord does direct us to give to someone who needs help through a difficult time, but we have to be sure it is the Lord directing this action, not our own desire to be a hero.  If we give out of turn, we may be prolonging the pain by delaying the learning process.  When something breaks, we need to figure out why and deal with the source of the problem, not just replace it with a new deal.</p>
<p>John 11:<sup>14</sup> &#8220;So he told them plainly, <span>“Lazarus is dead.</span> <sup>15</sup> <span>And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”</span></p>
<p><span>Bad times come to each of us and if we allow Him, Jesus will use those times to do something so much greater than any deal we can conceive.  Even greater than healing Lazarus is the fact that Jesus raised him from the dead.  For our sakes, sometimes things need to die so we can &#8220;really believe.&#8221;<br />

<p>Don&#8217;t worry you&#8217;re not going crazy. Twitter has gone red for World Aids Day. For one day only the microblogging sites homepage has turned red instead of the usual blue and is asking users to &#8220;Help turn Twitter (Red)&#8221;</p>
<p>By using the hashtags #red and #laceupsavelives throughout the day, not only will users be able to &#8220;help fight Aids in Africa&#8221;,  They&#8217;ll also turn the text of users&#8217; tweets a deep red. Which is a huge step away from the black text we&#8217;re used to.</p>
<p>The Twitter campaign has been organised by (Red), which describes itself as a &#8220;business model designed to create awareness and a sustainable flow of money from the private sector into the Global Fund, to help eliminate Aids in Africa.&#8221;</p>
<p>The charity is also encouraging Facebook users to change their profile picture red and post a video showing the improvement medication can make to HIV sufferers&#8217; lives.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I&#8217;ve been reading through &#8220;Morning and Evening&#8221; by Charles Spurgeon, and I wanted to share the November 21st reading (about the raising of Lazarus from the dead) with you:</p>
<p><em>He is to be envied</em>. It was well to be Martha and serve, but better to be Lazarus and commune. There are times for each purpose, and each is comely in its season, but none of the trees of the garden yield such clusters as the vine of fellowship. To sit with Jesus, to hear his words, to mark his acts, and receive his smiles, was such a favour as must have made Lazarus as happy as the angels. When it has been our happy lot to feast with our Beloved in his banqueting-hall, we would not have given half a sigh for all the kingdoms of the world, if so much breath could have bought them.   <em>He is to be imitated</em>. It would have been a strange thing if Lazarus had not been at the table where Jesus was, for he had been dead, and Jesus had raised him. For the risen one to be absent when the Lord who gave him life was at his house, would have been ungrateful indeed. We too were once dead, yea, and like Lazarus stinking in the grave of sin; Jesus raised us, and by his life we live—can we be content to live at a distance from him? Do we omit to remember him at his table, where he deigns to feast with his brethren? Oh, this is cruel! It behoves us to repent, and do as <em>he</em> has bidden us, for his least wish should be law to us. To have lived without constant intercourse with one of whom the Jews said, “Behold how he loved him,” would have been disgraceful to Lazarus, is it excusable in us whom Jesus has loved with an everlasting love? To have been cold to him who wept over his lifeless corpse, would have argued great brutishness in Lazarus. What does it argue in us over whom the Saviour has not only wept, but bled? Come, brethren, who read this portion, let us return unto our heavenly Bridegroom, and ask for his Spirit that we may be on terms of closer intimacy with him, and henceforth sit at the table with him.  <a href="#_ftn1"></a> <a href="#_ftnref1"></a>Spurgeon, Charles H.: <em>Morning and Evening : Daily Readings</em>. <description><![CDATA[Charles will once again be offering collectors and fans of his illustration work a Christmas holiday]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Charles will once again be offering collectors and fans of his illustration work a Christmas holiday special.  This year, the special will include a free print of your choice.  In addition, the artist will include a free limited edition pastel print of the Joseph Horne Co. Christmas tree.  The lighting of the Horne&#8217;s Christmas tree has been a long-standing family tradition in the city of Pittsburgh.</p>
<p>The Joseph Horne Co., often referred to simply as Horne&#8217;s by Pittsburghers was an iconic regional department store located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.   It was one of the oldest department stores in the country after being founded by Joseph Horne (1826-1891) in 1849.   The department store chain operated for nearly 145 years until it ceased operation in 1994 after it merged with Lazarus, a division of the Federated Dept. Stores, Inc.</p>
<p>Joseph Horne was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.  He moved to Pittsburgh where landed his first job in the retail trade with Christian Yeager.   At age of 23, he bought F.H. Eaton store and eventually renamed it the Joseph Horne Co.   It became the leading department store in Pittsburgh, along with Kaufmann&#8217;s lasting for generations.   In 1879, a new central location was built at the corner of Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street.   The building was a 7-story landmark and the first department store in the city&#8217;s downtown district.   The annual lighting of the Horne&#8217;s Christmas Tree at their flagship store was a long held family Christmas tradition.   The Christmas tree display was six stories high and erected on the building&#8217;s corner.  Although the store ceased operation, it remains a tradition with Pittsburgh&#8217;s annual Light-Up Night festivities.   Crowds would also gather during the Christmas season to view the Christmas display windows, which often were very elaborate and included animated moving characters.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s that time of year again when people forgo their usual sarcasms and recognize the good things in life. I know there is a lot to be sarcastic about these days and, if you watch entertainment news or The Soup, you know what I&#8217;m talking about. But there are many things to be thankful for such as good music. So, here are ten things that I&#8217;m thankful for (all music related of course): </p>
<p>10. <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Drum Off 2009" href="http://gc.guitarcenter.com/drum-off-2009/" target="_blank">Drum Off 09</a>: I’m thankful that there are corporations such as Guitar Center that still the value quality music, hosting events like this featuring the best drummers like Danny Carey from Tool and Brian Dailor from Mastodon.</p>
<p>9. Webcasts: I’m thankful for webcasts that bring festivals like Coachella and KROQ’s <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Muse" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVbTlKgLWGk&#38;feature=related" target="_blank">Almost Acoustic Christmas </a>to my computer every year when I can’t be there in person.</p>
<p>8. <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Triple Trouble" href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&#38;videoid=5601227&#38;searchid=88963544-ce28-4818-bb6b-19139f5bdc30" target="_blank">The Beastie Boys</a>, <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Behind the Music" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Gr51zt8FE" target="_blank">Vandals</a>, and <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Super Rad" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIqLz6LqMsU" target="_blank">The Aquabats</a>: I’m thankful that there are really talented musicians who resist the urge to take themselves seriously.</p>
<p>7. Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes: I’m thankful this rising star thinks the <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Daniel" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00ZHah-c0hQ" target="_blank">Karate Kid </a>and Stevie Nicks are important cultural icons.</p>
<p>6. Insanely unique musicians: I’m thankful for musicians such as <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="The Outsider" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGhBu1sBICw" target="_blank">Maynard James Keenan</a>, <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Cornflake Girl" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ5VlOl6tj4" target="_blank">Tori Amos</a>, <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Hyperballad" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wwdb0sDAkPg" target="_blank">Bjork </a>and <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="We're not alone" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xfv8h6nI-8" target="_blank">Mike Patton</a>, who all take music to places no one ever imagined or expected.</p>
<p>5. <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Head Like A Holes" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/SuperRadMusicBlog#p/u/15/AhH7L_ImCXY" target="_blank">NIN farewell tour</a>: I’m thankful that I finally got to see NIN live before Trent Reznor retired it.</p>
<p>4. Deftones’ resilliance: I’m thankful that <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Far" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbjqruCITIU&#38;feature=channel" target="_blank">Chi Cheng </a>is still holding on and maybe someday we’ll get to see him play again.</p>
<p>3. The <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Alt End" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1crolTmFV8" target="_blank">Cure</a> still rocks: I’m thankful this band is still touring and making great music. Without The Cure, Deftones and Muse would never sound the way they do.</p>
<p>2. <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Testify" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfhJV9FZGAk" target="_blank">Rage Against the Machine </a>reunion: I’m thankful that I got to see this band reunite at Coachella in 2007 with 80,000 other RATM fans.</p>
<p>1. <a class="wp-caption-dd" title="21st Century Digital Boy" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrFIsM1cvLc&#38;feature=related" target="_blank">Bad Religion </a>continues to comment on American society: I’m thankful Greg Graffin is saying all the things that need to be said and is also a UCLA professor, who is actually doing his part to help mold American youth into critically thinking members of society. </p>
<p>And now a Band of the Week I am very thankful for…Placebo!</p>
<p>I’ve been listening to this band for a while now and I am surprised that they are not as big in the states as they are everywhere else. Since the first time that I heard their cover of Kate Bush’s &#8220;<a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Running up that Hill (Placebo)" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKkaLM9NcSo&#38;feature=related" target="_blank">Running Up That Hill</a>,&#8221; I was hooked. I enthusiastically suggest anything from their 2006 album <em>Meds</em>, but you must hear “<a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Lazarus" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYN0wg1Ncdo" target="_blank">Lazarus</a>” and “<a class="wp-caption-dd" title="Drag" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GcH9j2pwZA&#38;feature=related" target="_blank">Drag</a>.” They recently released a new album <em>Battle for the Sun </em>and I am loving “<a class="wp-caption-dd" title="The Never-Ending Why" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9m8ODwZ-yw" target="_blank">The Never-Ending Why</a>.” I saw them live at Coachella and I highly recommend catching them live. However, this band will be on a World tour until March. Hopefully, these Brits will visit the states soon.</p>

<p>כמעט כל מתכנת מגיע לשלב שהוא (או היא) צריכים לטפל במסדי נתונים. כיום יש 3-4 גישות עבודה מקובלות עם מסדי נתונים:</p>
<ol>
<li>עבודה ישירה מול מסד נתונים ספציפי לפי API של היצרן</li>
<li>עבודה עם ספרייה שמאגדת פונקציות דומות עבור מבחר מסדי נתונים</li>
<li>מימוש עצמי של מסד נתונים (יש חברות בתעשייה שעושות טעויות כאלו)</li>
<li>עבודה עם כלי ORM אשר מנסות להשכיח את העבודה שיש מסד נתונים ומנסה לספק יכולת לעבוד כמה שיותר בתחביר של השפה בה אנחנו עובדים.</li>
</ol>
<p>האפשרות השלישית שציינתי קיימת בעיקר בחברות בינוניות וגדולות, אבל היא יחסית זניחה.</p>
<p>דלפי וכיום לזרוס כבר בשנות ה 90 הבינו כי נדרש שינוי משמעותי בעבודה עם מסדי נתונים, והם מספקים משהו שהוא חצי אפשרות השנייה וחצי האפשרות הרביעית ברשימה (משהו ביניים, שהוא בין שפה טבעית לבין API אחיד לכל מסדי הנתונים).</p>
<p>הבסיס הזה נקרא TDataset. הבסיס מאפשר לנו לקבל דבק אחיד של פעולות מבוססות מסדי נתונים, כאשר כל מה שאנחנו צריכים להחליף זו האפשרות של מה מנוע מסד הנתונים אליו אנחנו רוצים להתחבר. ופוסט זה עוסק בנושא הזה בצורה הפשוטה ביותר ללא נגיעה בכמעט כל האפשרויות ש Dataset מאפשר לנו לבצע.</p>
<p>בגדול מאוד בלי להיכנס יותר מידי לנושא, TDataset מאפשר לנו לדעת על המצב הנוכחי של טבלה/שאילתא (איזו פעולה היא ביצעה/ביקשה לבצע), אפשרות ליצור טבלה, אינדקסים ויחסי גומלין בין טבלאות, הכל באמצעות תחביר פסקל ולא דרך שימוש בשאילתות שאנחנו כותבים. אפשר לשלוט ברמה גבוהה יותר במה כל שדה עושה, כולל יחסי גומלין בין טבלאות גם כאשר מנוע מסד הנתונים לא תומך בזה (כדוגמת SQLite). אבל כאמור זה ממש בגדול בלי להיכנס כיצד עושים את זה.<!--more--></p>
<p>אז איך נתחיל בעבודה שלנו בלזרוס עם שימוש במסד נתונים עם כמה שפחות כאב ? ובכן נתחיל <a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/installing-packages/">בהתקנת החבילה</a> (במידה ולא עשיתם את זה) בשם <a href="http://wiki.freepascal.org/SQLdb_Package">SQLDBLaz</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/data-access.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2497" title="לשונית data access" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/data-access.png?w=150" alt="לשונית data access" width="277" height="37" /></a>לאחר שלזרוס חזר לנו מההתקנה, ניצור פרוייקט חדש בשם my_blog (הרי כל המדריכים כיום למסדי נתונים מלמדים להקים blog, אז למה לא אני ? אל תדאגו לא ניצור במדריך זה אתר). ונוסיף לו מלשונית הרכיבים שלנו את ‎TDatasource הממוקמת בלשונית Data Access. הפקד מופיע עם צלמית של מסד נתונים עם הרבה חצים (הפקד השמאלי ביותר בתמונה).</p>
<p>במידה ויש אצלכם פחות רכיבים בלשונית, זה בסדר. אצלי מותקנים רכיבים נוספים שלא מותקנים בברירת מחדל בלזרוס ובחלקם ניגע בפוסטים הבאים.</p>
<p>לפני שנמשיך חשוב לי להסביר מה בעצם הולך להיות מהנקודה הזו.ישנם הרבה צורות חיבור למסדי נתונים, והרבה מימושים. רובם מתבססים על ה API של TDataset (שהוא רחב יותר מאשר מחלקה אחת), אבל מציעים צורות עבודה שונות. הפקדים של SQLDBLaz משתמשים ב API שמגיע עם FPC עבור מסדי נתונים למשל, בעוד ש FIBComponents יוצר API משל עצמו עבור Firebird אבל עדיין משתמש ב API של TDataset. בנוסף ל SQLDBLaz יש תמיכה בעוד מסדי נתונים שונים בצורות אחרות בלזרוס שאפשר להתקין, כך שאנחנו לא באמת מחוייבים להשתמש רק בגישה אחת בלבד. כמו כן, ישנה ספרייה בשם ZeosDB (אשר לא נתמכת כראוי לדעתי האישית ב64 ביט), שהיא ספרייה צד שלישי לObject Pascal שעובדת עם כמה מהדרים, והרבה משתמשים בה, וגם היא תומכת ב TDataset.</p>
<p>עכשיו ניגש<a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/database_transactions.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2511" title="טרנזאקציות של מסד הנתונים" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/database_transactions.png?w=108" alt="טרנזאקציות של מסד הנתונים" width="108" height="150" /></a> ללשונית של SQLDb <a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/sqldb1.png"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2510" title="לשונית sqldb" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/sqldb1.png?w=150" alt="לשונית sqldb" width="150" height="22" /></a>ונבחר את החיבור למסד הנתונים שלנו. אני אישית עובד עם <a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/a-first-release-of-my-un-quick-start-guide-for-firebird-sql-in-hebrew/">firebird</a>. לאחר שבחנו את מסד הנתונים שלנו, נבחר את פקד הטרנזאקציות, ונחבר אותו אל מסד הנתונים שלנו (נוכל לבחור את זה בצורה גרפית ב Object Inspector).</p>

<p>הגדרות נוספות שנעשה במסד הנתונים הם הגדרת מסד הנתונים (במידה ומדובר ב firebird נגדיר או את מיקום מסד הנתונים או את ה alias שלו), נגדיר את כתובת שרת מסד הנתונים (אלא אם מדובר ב SQLite3), משתמש וסיסמה להתחבר ויש לנו חיבור מלא של מסד הנתונים שלנו.</p>
<p>עכשיו נוסיף שאילתא לרשימת הרכיבים שלנו. נחבר את השילתא למסד הנתונים ונראה שהוא גם לקח את ההגדרות של הטרנזאקציות שלנו.</p>
<p>ניצור למסד הנתונים שלנו טבלה (מחוץ ללזרוס כרגע) בשם authors:</p>

<p>כמובן שתשנו את זה בהתאם למסד הנתונים שלכם (אני מספק בסוף הפוסט קובץ להורדה עם הקוד כולל ה SQL המלא).</p>
<p>לאחר היצירה, נכתוב ברכיב השאילתא שלנו ב&#8221;תכונה&#8221; של SQL (בלבד) את הקוד הבא:<a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/select-sql-statment-property.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2514" title="שאילתת select" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/select-sql-statment-property.png?w=150" alt="שאילתת select" width="150" height="88" /></a></p>

<p>ואז נלך לרכיב של Datasource ונספק לו את רכיב השאילתא שלנו ונשמור את השינויים.</p>
<p>לפני שאמשיך יש כמה דברים שחשוב לי אפשר לפתוח חיבור ישיר למסד הנתונים שלנו בזמן תכנון ! מאוד מומלץ לא לעשות את זה למעט הצורך שלנו בזמן<a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/query-edit-fields.png"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2524" title="עריכת שדות" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/query-edit-fields.png?w=150" alt="עריכת שדות" width="150" height="135" /></a> התכון לדברים ספציפיים. במקום זה נכתוב 2 שורות קוד שיפתחו ויסגרו בשבילנו את החיבור בזמן ריצה במקום בזמן תכנון.</p>
<p><a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/add-fields.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2525" title="הוספת שדות" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/add-fields.png?w=138" alt="הוספת שדות" width="138" height="150" /></a>כרגע נפעיל את החיבור של מסד הנתונים על ידי העברת ערך של Connected ל true (לחיצה כפולה עושה את העבודה). וניגש לרכיב השאילתא שלנו ונפעיל גם אותה עם התכונה Active בערך של true.</p>
<p>לחיצה כפולה על פקד השאילתא שלנו (או לחיצה על מקש ימני והפעלת הערך הראשון בתפריט: Edit Fields) בשביל לערוך שדות.</p>
<p>בברירת מחדל נקבל חלון לבן (תלוי בצבעי המערכת שלכם) וריק.  נלחץ על מקש ימני ונבחר את האפשרות Add Fields, ואז נסמן ונבחר את כולם (לחיצה על ID ואז לחיצה על מקש ה Shift ולחיצה על שדה הChanged) ועל OK. ועכשיו חלון עריכת השדות שלנו מלא בשדות.</p>
<p>הפעולה הבאה שנעשה היא ללכת ל ID ולסמן את התכונה של Readonly ל true ונשים False לתכונה Required. אנחנו עושים זאת בשביל להזין את הערך שלו בצורה &#8220;אוטומטית&#8221; במסד הנתונים (במקרה של Firebird מדובר בTrigger). במידה ולא נבצע את הצעדים האלו, כאשר נרצה לשמור רשומה חדשה, נקבל חריגה (Exception) שלא ציינו ערך לשדה שהוא חובה (מאוחר יותר נראה למה).</p>
<p>אותו הדבר נעשה גם לשדות Added ו Changed היות וגם אותם אני משנה עם טריגרים במקום ידנית ולא נזין את הערכים ידנית אצלנו.</p>
<p>במידה ולא הינו רוצים לקחת את ה ID (אנחנו זקוקים לו, אבל לא אסביר בחלק זה למה), לא היינו צריכים לעשות את צעד הוספת השדות, אבל מומלץ בחום כן לעשות זאת. את השדות של Added ו Changed הוספנו בשביל לימוד נטו ולא מעבר לפחות כרגע.</p>
<p>שימו לב שהוספת השדות קובעת איך לזרוס ורכיבים שונים בלזרוס יתנהגו לכל שדה, גם אם ההתנהגות שונה לגמרי מההתנהגות המקורית שמוגדרת במסד הנתונים עצמו. במדריך הבא נראה את זה מגיע לידי ביטוי. אנחנו גם יכולים להסתיר ככה שדות בצורה וויזואלית במידה ואנחנו משתמשים ברכיב כדוגמת Grid (רשת), במקום להציג את השדה, אך לא אכנס לזה במדריך זה.</p>
<p><a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/data-controls-tab.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2527" title="טאב data controls" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/data-controls-tab.png?w=150" alt="טאב data controls" width="150" height="17" /></a>ועכשיו מתחילה העבודה עם פקדים גרפיים. ניגש ללשונית של Data Control. חשוב לדעת לפני שנמשיך שהפקדים הגרפיים של Data Control כמעט לגמרי זהים לפקדים &#8220;הרגילים&#8221; שיש לנו (למעט 2 פקדים ספציפיים שנגע בהם במדריך הבא), עם שינוי אחד: הם יודעים לעבוד עם ‎TDataset  ולעקוב אחריו וגם לשתף פעולה איתו בצורה שהיא אוטומטית עבורינו, ובכך הם חוסכים לנו עבודה. אך במידה והם לא עונים על הגמישות שאנחנו צריכים, תמיד אפשר לעבוד עם פקדים רגילים, ולעבוד &#8220;קשה יותר&#8221; לעשות את הקישור בצורה תכנותית, או <a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/%D7%99%D7%A6%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%AA-%D7%A8%D7%9B%D7%99%D7%91-%D7%97%D7%93%D7%A9-%D7%91%D7%9C%D7%96%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%A1-%D7%97%D7%9C%D7%A7-%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%A9%D7%95%D7%9F/">ליצור</a> פקדים משל עצמנו.</p>
<p>בטאב, נזרוק את הרכיב TDBNavigator . תפקיד הרכיב הוא לתת לנו פעולות &#8220;מוכרות&#8221; אשר חוזרות על עצמן בDataset שלנו. כרגע אנחנו נוסיף לו את ה Datasource שלנו ונגיד לתכונה של align להיות alTop. כך הפקד ייושר כלפי מעלה, וכל שינוי בגודל החלון שלנו ישנה גם את הפקד הזה. בנוסף ב Visible Buttons נעיף את התמיכה בDelete (אני לא אוהב למחוק פיזית ממסד נתונים, אלא רק להסתיר אותם בברירת מחדל ולסמן אותם פנימית כ&#8221;מחוקים&#8221;). ואלו כרגע כל הפעולות שנעשה עם הפקד הזה.</p>
<p>נלך לטאב הראשון (Standard) ונוסיף עכשיו 2 פקדי TLabel  ונחליט שהם נמצאים ב Left 8. נוכל לעשות את זה לשניהם בייחד אם נבחר אחד, ואז נלחץ על shift ונבחר את השני,  ואז נלך לתכונה של left ונכתוב שם 8. אפשר לבחור גם עם העכבר עם מקש שמאלי לחוץ וגרירה של הסמן. ודרכים נוספות, שאתן לכם לגלות לבד, ולהחליט מה נוח לכם.</p>
<p>עכשיו נלך לתווית ההראשונה, ונכתוב לה &#8220;Name&#8221; בתכונה של Caption. ונעבר לתווית הבאה, ונכתוב שם &#8220;Can Author&#8221; בתכונה של Caption. וסיימנו לעבוד עם הפקדים האלו, למרות שאפשר לספק להם עוד יכולת שלא אכנס אליה במדריך זה, והיא לתת פוקוס לרכיב שיכול לקבל פוקוס על ידי תכונה בשם FocusControl אבל לא אכנס לזה במדריך זה.</p>
<p>עכשיו נחזור לטאב של Data Control ונבחר את הפקד TDBEdit ונשים אותו ליד התווית הראשונה. וTDBCheckBox ליש התווית השניה. עכשיו נמחק את ה Caption של TDBCheckBox (אני מחפש מראה אחיד שלא נוכל לקבל אם נשתמש בCaption של הפקד).</p>
<p>לאחר מכן נבחר גם את הרכיבים של הDBEdit וגם את DBCheckbox בייחד, ונשים להם בתכונה של Datasource את ה Datasource שלנו. עכשיו נבחר כל אחד בנפרד, ונתן להם את השדה המתאים (כלומר ל DBEdit ניתן את השדה Name ול DBCheckbox ניתן את Can_Author).</p>
<p>בDBCheckBox יש גם את 2 התכונות: ValueChecked ו ValueUnChecked. נשים בראשון את הערך 1 ובשני את הערך 0. במידה ונרצה להיות צדיקים נלך גם לSQLQuery1CAN_AUTHOR (השדה שיצרנו בצורה וויזואלית) ונספק לו MinValue של 0 ו MaxValue של 1, אבל לא חייבים.</p>
<p>עוד 2 צעדים ונוכל להריץ את התוכנה שלנו !!!</p>
<p>הצעד הבא יהיה להוסיף מטאב הAdditional את כפתור ה TBitBtn. יש לכפתור הזה 3 תכונות שאנחנו נרצה אותם:</p>

<li>יכולת להציג תמונות</li>
<li>לקבל פוקוס (בניגוד לאחיו שנקרא TSpeedButton)</li>
<li>הוא מסוגל לבצע פעולות בלי שנכתוב לו קוד.</li>
</ol>
<p>לאחר ששמנו אותו על החלון, נלך לתכונה Kind ונגיד לו bkClose. לאחר מכן נלך לתכונה ModalResult ונגיד לו להיות mrOK. נראה שיש לנו תמונה של Close וטקסט בהתאם. זה מה ש bkClose סיפק לנו. הModalResult מאפשר לנו מאוחר יותר ליצור מהחלון שלנו דיאלוג שתופס את הפוקוס מעל שאר החלונות וכשהוא נסגר, הוא מחזיר ערך של mrOK. עוד תכונה ש Kind עשה בשבילו היא, שבמידה ונלחץ על הכפתור בזמן ריצה הוא יעשה עבורינו את הפעולה Close בלי שנכתוב קוד בשביל זה.</p>
<p>עכשיו נריץ את התוכנה שלנו וננסה להזין נתונים (אם סגרתם את החיבור של מסד הנתונים ו/או השאילתא, אנא פתחו אותם לפני הריצה, או שהפקדים לא יהיו פעילים בזמן הריצה) <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>במידה ואין בעיות כ<a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/object-inspector-events.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2529" title="אירועים בobject inspector" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/object-inspector-events.png?w=108" alt="אירועים בobject inspector" width="108" height="150" /></a>י עקבנו אחרי ההוראות, נלחץ על כפתור ה Close ונראה שהוא עובד. עכשיו נריץ שוב את התוכנית שלנו ונגלה דבר מעצבן, המידע שעבדנו עליו מקודם לא נשמר ! כמו שאמרתי מקודם, אנחנו עובדים עם טרנזאקציות, ואנחנו צריכים להגיד לחיבור שלנו לשלוח את הפעולות שלנו (זה יכול להתבצע אפילו לפני סגירת החחלון, כלומר לשלוח את השינויים שעשינו בפעם אחת), ולכן לא נשלחו השינויים פיזית למסד הנתונים בלי שנגיד להם במפורש לעשות זאת. עכשיו נתחיל לכתוב קצת קוד. נלך לפקד השאילתא שלנו ונבחר בטאב האירועים ונבחר את האירוע AfterPost ונלחץ עליו 2 לחיצות מהירות (הדרך המהירה לעשות את זה). ושם נכתוב את הקוד הבא (מסומן בקו תחתי):</p>

<p>וכן נלך ל Object Inspector חזרה לתכונות ונגיד לו UpdateMode לשים את הערך upWhereChanged.</p>
<p>כל מה שעכשיו נשאר לנו לעשות זה לסגור את החיבורים במצב תכנון, ולפתוח ולסגור אותם בזמן ריצה. את זה נעשה עם האירועים של החלון עצמו. נלחץ על החלון עצמו ונלך ב Object Inspector אל Events . ונבחר את האירוע של OnClose.</p>

<p>שורת ה if בודקת האם כרגע השאילתא שלנו היא במצב של הוספת ערכים או עריכתם. במקרה שכן אנחנו נשמור את השינויים (מומלץ לפני כן לשים חלון שישאל, אבל לא נעשה את זה בחלק זה). לאחר מכן, אנחנו סוגרים קודם את החיבור של השאילתא ורק אז את החיבור של מסד הנתונים.</p>

<p>Se puede decir que Lazarus es una alternativa gratuita y libre a <a title="Delphi" href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi">Delphi</a>. Y aunque la web y la mayoría de la documentación esté en inglés, sí está traducido el entorno de desarrollo (<a title="Entorno de desarrollo integrado" href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entorno_de_desarrollo_integrado">IDE</a>).</p>
<p>Para instalar Lazarus en Ubuntu ejecutamos en un <strong>Terminal</strong> (Aplicaciones &#62; Accesorios &#62; Terminal) el siguiente comando:</p>

<title><![CDATA[God's Delays]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[If you&#8217;ve ever thought to yourself, &#8220;God, you are taking too long,&#8221; you come from ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>If you&#8217;ve ever thought to yourself, &#8220;God, you are taking too long,&#8221; you come from a large tribe. I, for one, am very impatient. You know that you are impatient when microwaves, fast food restaurants, and remote controls are too <strong><em>slow</em></strong> for you!</p>
<p>But we must learn that God&#8217;s timing, though oftentimes seemingly insane, is always best. Consider the story found in John 11:1-45. Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus, lay sick and near death. Lazarus&#8217; two sisters, Mary and Martha, sent word to Jesus. Those women fully expected Him to drop whatever He was doing and rush to Lazarus&#8217; side.</p>
<p>But after receiving the news that Lazarus was gravely ill,  Jesus remained where He was for the next two days. His reaction to the news was simply, &#8220;This sickness will not end in death. It is for God&#8217;s glory so that God&#8217;s Son may be glorified through it.&#8221; It was only after the two days had passed that Jesus said to His disciples, &#8220;Lazarus is dead.&#8221;</p>
<p>By the time that Jesus arrived at Lazarus&#8217; home, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Apparently, he had died shortly after that messenger had been dispatched to Jesus. It took the messenger a day to get to Jesus, and it took Jesus a day to get to Lazarus. Add in the two days of delay and you get four days in the tomb. I&#8217;ve read that the Jews believed that the spirit hovered near the body for three days and then departed. With Lazarus being in the tomb for <em>four</em> days, it seemed that even Jesus wouldn&#8217;t be able to do anything. </p>
<p>Understandably, Mary and Martha were angry and disappointed with Jesus. On separate occasions, each of them uttered the same line: &#8220;Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.&#8221; Martha did add in a touch of faith to her complaint by saying, &#8220;But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give You.&#8221; She wanted to believe that Jesus was going to do something miraculous.</p>
<p>And, of course, He did. He went out to the tomb and, with many onlookers in attendance, raised Lazarus from the dead. When Lazarus came out of that cave still loosely wrapped in burial cloths, Jesus said to some of those people, &#8220;Loose him and let him go.&#8221; I wonder who volunteered for that job. How would you like to unwrap a mummy?       </p>
<p>Then, just when we think the story can&#8217;t get any better, we get the payoff. John 11:45 says: Then <strong><em>many</em></strong> of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, <strong><em>believed in him</em></strong> .&#8221; You see, just as Jesus gave <em>physical</em> life to Lazarus that day, He gave <em>spiritual</em> life to all those new believers. That two-day wait of His had set the stage for a prolific evangelistic harvest.</p>
<p>This story should teach us that if God delays doing something, He has a good reason for the delay. He doesn&#8217;t make us wait just so He can watch us squirm. He&#8217;s not trying to toy with us like a puppet on a string. No, He&#8217;s always up to something bigger and better. So, if He currently has you in the midst of a delay, make yourself be patient. Keep your faith high that He hasn&#8217;t forgotten about your situation, and just let Him work things out not only in His <em>will</em> but in His <em>timing</em>. You never know what miracle, either physical or spiritual, He might have in mind.</p>

It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.  Jesus said, <span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>“Take away the stone.”</strong> </span>Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”  So they took away the stone.</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.gracegems.org/Ryle/j11.htm">J.C.Ryle comments:</a></p>
<p>We should mark, first, <em><strong>our Lord&#8217;s words about the STONE which lay upon the grave of Lazarus. </strong></em>We read that He said to those around Him, when he came to the place of burial, &#8220;Take you away the stone.&#8221;</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-6213" title="lazarus" src="http://bibledaily.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/lazarus.jpg?w=300" alt="lazarus" width="300" height="201" /> It was<span style="color:#ff0000;">Now why did our Lord say this?</span> doubtless as easy for Him to command the stone to roll away untouched as to call a dead body from the tomb. But such was not His mode of proceeding. Here, as in other cases, He chose to give man something to do. Here, as elsewhere, He taught the great lesson that <em><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">His almighty power was not meant to destroy man&#8217;s responsibility</span></strong>. </em>Even when He was ready and willing to raise the dead, He would not have man stand by altogether idle.</p>
<p>Let us treasure up this in our memories. It involves a point of great importance. In doing spiritual good to others&#8211;in training up our children for heaven&#8211;in following after holiness in our own daily walk&#8211;in all these things it is undoubtedly true that we are weak and helpless. &#8220;Without Christ we can do nothing.&#8221; But still we must remember that <em>Christ expects us to do what we can. </em>&#8220;Take you away the stone&#8221; is the daily command which He gives us. Let us beware that we do not stand still in idleness, under the pretense of humility. Let us daily try to do what we can, and in the trying Christ will meet us and grant His blessing.</p>

<p>אם אתם כמוני עובדים הרבה עם לזרוס, אז בטח כבר מזמן ששמתם לב שיש תפריט בשם packages . התפקיד של התפריט הוא לנהל חבילות שמקלות עלנו את החיים בצורה הבאה:</p>
<ol>
<li>איגוד של כל הקבצים אותם אנחנו רוצים להדר בקבוצות שונות (לדוגמא מכנה משותף לכולם)</li>
<li>הוראות כיצד להדר דברים בקבוצה</li>
<li>שליטה בתלויות. כלומר נגיד ואנחנו צריכים להסתמך על משהו אחר, אז אנחנו יכולים לציין את החבילה והמערכת בודקת אם הוא נמצא או לא ואם הגרסה של החבילה מתאימה לצרכים שלנו לפי הגדרות שלנו.</li>
<li>סדר בפרוייקטים.</li>
<li>שיתוף קבצים בין פרוייקטים שונים</li>
</ol>
<p>במילים אחרות יש לנו מנהל חבילות ממש כמו בהפצות הלינוקס רק עבור סביבת העבודה ותוכנות שלנו.</p>
<p>התפקיד של החבילה הוא להרחיב את יכולות סביבת העבודה או התוכנות שלנו. זה יכול להיות להתבטא באמצעות רכיב (גרפי או לא), זה יכול להוסיף למשל תמיכה ב svn (יש באמת חבילה שכזו) עבור סביבת העבודה, או אפילו להוסיף תמיכה בעוד שפת תכנות אשר עובדת לגמרי שונה מאשר  Pascal, או אפילו רק מהדר Pascal אחר.</p>
<p>החבילות מחולקות לשתי קבוצות (או שייכים ל2 הקבוצות בייחד):<!--more--></p>

<li>זמן תכנון (design-time)</li>
<li>זמן ריצה (run-time)</li>
</ol>
<p>חבילה לזמן תכנון משפיעה על ה IDE בצורה זו או אחרת. זה אומר שאני יכול להתקין רכיב, זה אומר שאני יכול להרחיב/לשנות את היכולות של הסביבה ועוד הרבה מאוד דברים נוספים.</p>
<p>חבילה לזמן ריצה בסה&#8221;כ משייכת קבצים אל התוכנה שלי בצורה מסודרת ובעצם מספקת סוג של מעטפת המסדרת את התוכנה שלנו שתשתמש בקבצים שונים המאוגדים לחבילה אחת. כך ניתן להשתמש בחבילות שונות לתוכנה אחת ולעשות שימוש חוזר בקוד בכמה פרוייקטים במקביל.</p>

<li><a href="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/installed-packages.png"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2477" title="חבילות מותקנות/להתקנה" src="http://idkn.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/installed-packages.png?w=150" alt="חבילות מותקנות/להתקנה" width="150" height="129" /></a>התקנה באמצעות Configure installed packages. מתקין לנו חבילות אשר רשומות במערכת. כאלו שהתקנו והסרנו בעבר או כאלו שמגיעים בברית מחדל עם המערכת.</li>
<li>התקנת קובץ lpk (קובץ החבילה). אנחנו נבחר בה כאשר מדובר בחבילה שלא מגיעה עם לזרוס בברירת מחדל, ונעשה זאת על ידי בחירה באפשרות Open package file (.lpk) &#8230; ואז נבחר את הקובץ המתאים.</li>
</ol>
<p>ניתן עם האפשרות הראשונה גם להסיר חבילה מותקנת.</p>
<p>חשוב לדעת שגם חבילת זמן ריצה חייבת להיפתח, אבל אותה נוכל לפתוח רק באמצעות האפשרות השנייה, ואז נהדר את הקוד. הידור הקוד יגרום ללזרוס לזהות את החבילה ולהציע לנו להשתמש בה.</p>

<p>הוספת חבילת זמן ריצה תתבצע על ידי הוספת רשומה עבור הפרוייקט שלנו בתפריט Project -&#62; Object Inspector ושם להוסיף את החבילה שרוצים.</p>
<p>במידה ובפרוייקט הוספנו רכיבים בעבר ונוספו לנו לשם חבילות שאנחנו לא מעוניינים בהם יותר, צריך להוריד משם גם את החבילה המיותרת.</p>
<p>עכשיו בואו נעשה ניסוי קטן של התקנת חבילה באמצעות האפשרות הראשונה ונתקין את הרכיב של SQLDBLaz אשר מספק לנו חיבור למגוון של מסדי נתונים כדוגמת PostreSQL, SQLite3, Firebird וגרסאות 4, 4.1 ו5 של MySQL. בפוסט הבא נלמד להשתמש ברכיבים אלו.</p>
