We’re a day late to this party, but not only is James Murphy working on a new LCD Soundsystem

We’re a day late to this party, but not only is James Murphy working on a new LCD Soundsystem record for 2010, but he’s also scoring the new Noah Baumbach movie, Greenberg. Murphy promised in an interview with Drowned in Sound that the soundtrack would “sound NOTHING like lcd soundsystem.” He also mentions a possible song on the LCD record called “Why Do You Hate Music” that sounds promising. And, if you’re sitting there wondering what could possibly go wrong with a Noah Baumbach-helmed, James Murphy-scored film, we have two words for you: Ben. Stiller. Nonetheless, the trailer shows promise and the supporting cast includes mumblecore vets Greta Gertwig and Mark Duplass. Either way, we’ll be looking forward to the film next March.

And here’s one for Rich. Lady Gaga isn’t really my cup of tea. But I caught this on the Jonathan Ross show and thought that it had a certain appealing energy. She actually does have talent, although one wonders whether it’s enough to keep her from falling into the Spears/Aguilera teenybop musical sewer. I doubt it. Talent does not equal judgment.

There’s something about Mary.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – Bye Bye Bayou

I had this idea once – I get them all the time – for a Zima commercial.

The ad begins with a young woman (possibly underage) throwing up outside of a dance club. I can see her now: she’s on her knees, short skirt, floral wreath-flavored tramp stamp on full display, purse at her side, regurgitated Zima hitting the ground. After she stops, she moans and wipes the side of her mouth with the back of her hand. Enter, from frame left, a guy wearing a black button down shirt, gold chain, he’s got a $90 haircut and most likely smells like Axe Body Spray. They met about two hours before. She was already a little tipsy, so dude went ahead and bought her another four Zimas, which she drank in rapid succession. Thus, the trip to the alley.

“Hey, Lindsey,” he says.

Lindsey is still on the ground. She’s makes a small whimper and finally manages to tilt her head up to look at dude. A sheen of clear vomit rings her lower lip.

Dude reaches down to help her up. She gets up. Not gracefully, mind you. More like a young horse, newly born, staggering to its feet for the first time. She’s trashed, teetering on her high heels.

“Come on,” the dude says, putting an arm around her. “I’ll take you home.”

“Yrrr shoooo gooood too meeee,” she slurs.

As the pair strides off, he turns his head back, looks straight into the camera, and says “Thanks, Zima!” Then he laughs like an evil scientist. Cut to shot of product. Fade to black.

All throughout the commercial, you can hear the song that’s being played inside the dance club, albiet a bit muffled due to the whole being-outside-of-the-bar motif. But it’s still there and it’s quite audible. While I never thought of what song would be playing over this future Clio winner, I now know after this week’s excursions into the land of hype that the tune is “Bye Bye Bayou” by LCD Soundsystem. Listen to the song, go back, and reread my ad idea. I expect calls from both Zima and LCD Soundsystem embracing this marriage of music, visuals, and vomit – you can’t have one without the other two.

When he isn’t pounding rhythms behind the drumkit for Belgian indie crossover band Soulwax, Ghentbas

When he isn’t pounding rhythms behind the drumkit for Belgian indie crossover band Soulwax, Ghentbased artist Steve Slingeneyer is quite likely to be mixing tunes, slipping beats and raising the roof at some venue around the world.

Under the name of One Man Party, Slingeneyer has been putting together the most awkward of musical mash-ups in a manner that eludes categorisation, let alone description.

Do bear in mind, however, that one of his influences is Animal from The Muppet Show, which could explain it all. If still in doubt log on to OMP’s MySpace page and download his free DJ mix.

He’s shared bills with the likes of 2manydj’s, Justice, MixHell, Busy P, Vitalic, Klaxons, and many others, and on November 21, he will be bringing his soaring electro-fied music to Malta when he performs at Tattingers in Rabat for the ‘The Beat that shakes the Mothership’ event, the last of four events that Don Disko ( www.dondisko.com) have staged with the collaboration of The Devil Digs Rave this summer.

The three previous editions, held at different venues, featured different local DJs and artists and were a huge success. Apart from One Man Party, the line-up for the last leg of the tour will also include Mathematikal, who are currently working on their debut album, as well as DJ sets from Squeak and Kenji.

Tickets are available from Exit, Fact, Dr Juice, Ryans and Chequers or by sending an e-mail to info@dondisko.com.

Interview with Steve Slingeneyer

(One Man Party)

How did you first get involved in music and then in bands?

My father is a musician; my whole family is musical. We would dance in the living room to Earth, Wind and Fire and rock out to AC/DC. I got into music at an early age. I was 13 or so when I picked up the guitar and then got into drums, formed a punk/hardcore band and that was it. It just grew from there.

Apart from the Soulwax connection, what gave you the urge to set up your one man party alter ego, and when?

In the early Soulwax days, Stephen Dewaele (of 2manydjs) and I used to DJ for fun, mixing anything from disco and funk to rock and electronic stuff. Then I moved to New York for seven years. When I came back to Belgium, I steadily started DJ-ing more and more; from the bar to the local clubs to international places.

The name One Man Party came from James Murphy (of LCD Soundsytem) because I was known for dancing and partying hard on tour and at parties. It seemed perfect to use as a DJ name.

Eclectic setlists are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think have clubbers become more receptive to such diversity on the dancefloor?

Being eclectic is completely natural to me. I get bored hearing or playing just one style of music. I think people in general have broad tastes. One has to cater for that.

It’s also a real challenge to make different styles of music work together. You can mix by tempo but also by key, finding little bridges between tracks is what excites me.

Although clubbers tend to follow ‘styles’ a lot it’s nice to tease or surprise them with a track they wouldn’t normally dance to. A DJ should just want to make as many people dance as possible and hypnotise them with his selections, but it’s also a lot of fun to shock sometimes; throw somebody off. By the way, I never rehearse a set.

Any particular people you’d care to mention who have had a major musical influence on you as a musician and as a DJ?

There are loads and it’s mostly because they’ve taken me on a trip… Maurice Fulton, Carl Craig, 2manydjs of course, Riton, James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, Erol Alkan, Justice.

Ghent seems to be quite big on groovy tunes and clubbing, but also for alternative music.

Ghent has been producing some good music lately. My favourite new band is called Teddiedrum; a two-piece band that plays electronics, a ‘teddybear’ drum, guitar, keys… they sound like a cross between Hot Chip and Devo.

Then there’s a good indie band called Wallace Vanborn and others such as Hong Kong Dong, Das Pop, Drums are for Parades, Waldorf, Mascotte and many others. There’s a lot of diversity and many of the younger bands are often quite experimental, which is always good.

On the dance front there’s Nid and Sancy, The Glimmers, Ultravid, Sound of Stereo, Disco Drunkards, Hermanos Inglesos… a lot of bands. Ghent has been a real source for dance music but there’s a lot of live action too thanks to clubs and bars such as Charlatan, Make-up, Vooruit, Culture Club, Video and Roerkuip.

Your top five tracks at the moment are…

High Together by Siriusmo, Ghost Girl (Blatta and Inesha Remix) by Telepopmusik, The Dozens by Fake Blood, Simple Things (Work it Out) by Shitrobot and the 12” remix of Gino Soccio’s Remember

You’re playing at the last leg of DonDisko’s ‘the Beat that Shakes the Mothership’ tour. What are you cooking up for the occasion?

DonDisko will drop the funk and I bring on the rave…

Any expectations on your part from Malta and its clubbing scene?

Sadly, I don’t know the clubbing scene in Malta but I can imagine it’s an easy atmosphere – what with all the sun you get! I am definitely interested in the history of Malta and I’ve heard about the ancient Megalithic temples, which I hope to visit… depending on how the clubnight goes of course (laughs).

High school and college. God, how I miss them already. Now I’m 22, In fucking Korea, and I work a nine to five.

Sometimes, all I want is to be splayed out next to the warm lake back home with my high school boyfriend. Or pummeling down highway 71 with my brother in his Supra. Or smoking cigarettes in stretches of desert with friends.

The angsty pain and adrenaline associated with those year is tied, inextricably, the the music I listened to. It’s sad that this decade – and formative chapter of life – is closing. These may not be the best albums of the 2000’s, but they’re my best albums.

2001 - Hedwig and the Angry Inch OST.

#1) My dad gave me this movie when I was in high school, but I never appreciated it fully until, at 17, the first boy who dumped me forced me to watch it one January under his covers. Whenever I’ve broken up with boys, I always find myself driving through neighborhoods singing “Origin of Love.” The soundtrack is a full-blooded, raw, sincere ode to love in its many, many forms.

2003 - Erland Oye, Unrest

#2) Electronica music helped to build the foundation for my music appreciation, and no album (or artist) had a greater impact on me than Erlend Oye. After the death of trance/house, Oye pumped new blood into the genre: an album that was organized, subtle, and minimal, capturing the autumnal isolation of Nordic life and blending it with restless, steady energy in modern pop. I am in love with this man.

2004 - Animal Collective - Sung Tongs

#3) I blame Animal Collective for the fact that I dressed like a Native American stuck in 1970 in college. I blame them for all the weed I smoked, too. Sung Tongs wasn’t like anything I’d every heard: It was primitive, sensual almost, like a wild animal you could hear through headphones. They were, and still are, one of the only bands with a distinct, inimitable style to emerge after 2000.

2006 - Joanna Newsom - Ys.

#4) God, what the hell is that?

My first impression of Joanna Newsom, mewling and shrieking to the velvety crescendo of a harp. But her childlike lyrics and nymphette demeanor infected me, badly. Ys was a weighty album, each song a storybook. Newsom was a role model to me, so small, so powerful.

2002 - Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People

#5 I almost can’t listen to this album. If I do, I’m transported back to high school. I’m still crying over Jeff Holman. I’m still drunk at an anime convention. I’m playing Tetris in the hallway. I’m still sitting in a truck bed after marching band practice. I still have black hair and fake glasses and low self esteem. I still want everyone to notice me so badly, my skin hurts. It’s an Anthem for a 17 Year Old Girl.

2000 - Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica

#6 Like BSS, It’s hard for me to shake the memories any Modest Mouse album dregs up.

The Moon and Antarctica is maybe the point when Isaac Brock went off the deep end, droning on darkly like chubbier Thom Yorke in a denser mood. But Modest Mouse transformed and adapted with this album.

Just as life was really getting bleak at 16, so was Modest Mouse. Serendipity?

2002 - Chemical Brothers - Come With US

#7) Dear Cooper: Thanks for showing me one of the greatest albums ever. I remember the poster you had in your room, and the way it sounded through the speakers in your car that I accidentally melted lard all over. It makes my ribcage shake, my heart undulate, my blood go fast, my head turn to stars, my emotions ebb and swell. It’s a brother and a sister, at 90 mph, 110 bmps.

2001 - Daft Punk - Discovery

#8 It’s not that Daft Punk made every sucessful dance party that I ever threw. It’s that Daft Punk made me want to dance.

I could never dance in high school. I was too busy thinking people were watching me. Discovery was so good, my body told me it was a crime not to move. And it did. And it still does.

2007 - LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

#9 This is the end of college. Like angst coincided with Isaac Brock, so fear does with James Murphey.

For me, SOS is about fear. Fear of getting old, fear of losing your friends, fear of failure, fear of being too late. And as a lot of those things happened to me towards the end of college, I held onto this.

2009 - jj - JJ N 2

#10 No one knows about, much less appreciates JJ. If this album were a color, it would be a frost covered, cobalt-blue.

Maybe I found this album right before I biked across Germany, and it lays a soundtrack for first seeing the world. Maybe its dynamism is what appeals to me. I’m not sure sometimes. But it’s never leaving me.

Honorable Mentions:

The Books – The Lemon of Pink

Brian Wilson – Smile

Alan Braxe & Fred Falke – The Upper Cuts

i’ve been on a mash-up kick lately. it hasn’t been just girl talk or diplo either, i’ve had my ear to the underground–so to speak–finding some great mixes by anonymous and not so anonymous djs. you won’t find any of these songs coming to the radio soon, but they are certainly worth a listen. i’ll list a couple of these mash-ups and where to get them later in the post. in addition to the mash-ups i’ve been finding, i’ve also found some great covers of well-known songs by well-known artists. like imogen and heap covering michael jackson’s “thriller” or joshua radin covering the sesame street theme song (see after the jump for links). these new takes on old songs puts a whole new spin on things.

wale. heard of him? you will soon. he’s a rapper out of d.c. and his current single “chillin’” of his album attention deficit features lady gaga. anything gaga touches lately seems to be gold, even her–always interesting–new song “bad romance.” when i first heard his album, it actually wasn’t because of “chillin’,” but for his song “90210″ about a girl with a cocaine addiction and eating disorder learning that hollywood isn’t as glamorous as it is on tv. a really catchy track, even with its sad story. another track of interest is the one right after “90210″ called “tv in the radio” and features k’naan who is straight ‘outta’ mogadishu. wale’s upbeat rapping, the verse k’naan ripping on ryan secrest, and fun horn loops make this song another winner. so check out wale’s album attention deficit out now. “chillin’” video after the jump.

tracks of interest: chillin, 90210, tv in the radio

1. Daft Punk – Discovery
2. LCD Soundsystem – LCD Soundsystem
3. Telefon Tel Aviv – Map Of What Is Effortless
4. Venetian Snares – Rossz csillag alatt született
5. Burial – Burial
6. Portishead – Third
7. The Streets – Original Pirate Material
8. Sufjan Stevens – Illinois
9. Matmos – The Civil War
10. N.E.R.D. – In Search Of…

I was beginning to think my lack of internet was the Lord Almighty telling me not to waste my time b

I was beginning to think my lack of internet was the Lord Almighty telling me not to waste my time blogging, but then I remembered to plug the ethernet cable back into the wall because I had taken into the other room for my Xbox. Now that I’ve finished embarrassing myself – here are some songs for you.

The Ink Spots: I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire – This is the theme song to Fallout 3 and it sounds like an old american songbook ballad. It’s in mono sound and just has a very unique vibe to it, and that is probably because it’s authentic which is something we take for granted nowadays. The ink spots were an african american group during the 30’s and 40’s so it’s a chance for you to experience song roots of modern music.

Them Crooked Vultures: Scumbag Blues – Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones unite for a breathtaking journey into the future of music. Just as I was beginning to think things could only go downhill from here some of the gods in the rock world have stepped up to gather the sheep and lead the flocks. If you need some groove tonight and you need some rock and roll, just be grateful I’ve shown you the path. The link above is just an attachment to an instrumental promo. The album comes out this Tuesday.

Might be my new favorite cover band and you haven’t lived until you’ve checked this music out.

This week the band scrutinising the weeks releases were the much hyped Free Energy in The Lock Tavern, just before playing a storming show in Camden.

It’s been rather fun, and at times testing, learning to edit and use Final Cut Pro on the fly… but very much worth it. Also, I got to have a sneaky listen to a new LCD Soundsystem track, Bye Bye Barou, which was very pleasurable. Here are the outcomes of the session:

Now accepting all suggestions for new (or old) music… With a new vehicle (pronounced “ve

Now accepting all suggestions for new (or old) music…

With a new vehicle (pronounced “vee-hickle” around these here parts) came a free 3-month teaser of XM Radio. In the absence of new Killing Joke or Radiohead material, a teaser of XM meant I make one last, futile attempt at exposing myself to “what’s new?” music before my tastes — like the closet of every man (according to the Seinfeld riff) — permanently freeze to reflect the best years of my life*.

*not sure if those were defined by when a man was most young and hip, when his body had no quarrel with daily aches and pains, or simply when casual sex was most attainable for the least amount of effort.

There Are Problems with This Approach

First, make no mistake: The XM experience is quite fun. There are “decades” stations like “’70s on [channel] 7,” ’80s on 8, etc. Those are a memory trip. But for those, the decade in question is literally the only criteria. So you can have The Cure bookended by Pat Benatar and Michael Jackson. Or Stone Temple Pilots sandwiched between TLC (“Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls”) and Erasure. I don’t care what your tastes are, that combination is like a twisted psychological experiment.

What at first is a novelty quickly becomes a jolting, fucked up memory trip. It’s a reminder of what was on back then, but it’s also a reminder of what I hated back then. I need a very quick trigger finger lest Creed invade my head.

What’s worse — but interesting in a Musicophilia kind of way? With this experiment going on, I don’t need to hear a song at all to have it stuck in my head. I’ll hear part of one song I didn’t like then (or now), and then half an hour later I’ll be on the hockey bench realizing that some other song from that era is now rattling around in my head. It’s haunting. How do our synapses do that?

Sad to Confirm, New Music Modern Rock Often Sucks

But the decades stations are just land mines of last resort. There are a couple of stations that are pretty decade-specific, but much more up my alley. “Lithium” focuses more on my kind of ’90s, while “First Wave” hits my kind of ’80s, which are happily Michael Jackson-, Bon Jovi- and Pat Benatar-free.

Then there is a “modern alternative” station that I counted on to be my introduction to What I’ve Been Missing. Now, Mrs. Fall of Because calls me a “music snob” — but I’m hardly informed enough to claim such a title. What I do have is pretty specific tastes across multiple genres, so if something doesn’t strike me in multiple areas of melody or bass or tempo and certainly lyrically, my patience wanes. I’m not a snob, it’s all subjective at its root; I just want music to smack me in the head and the gut, and knock my knees out — or else I’ll turn back to old standbys that do.

So there’s a lot of Mute Math or Sun-something-Pickup or Muse or Killers or Kings of What-Not … more names than I can remember. They’re trying to incorporate multiple eras and influence — while recognizing the synthesizer is not to be feared — all intentions I applaud. The songs grab me a little bit at first, then kind of plateau. I’m not feeling it. Now I’m hearing the same songs cycled through the rotation again, and I’m recognizing them, and they’re still not grabbing me, and I’m feeling a bit hopeless. Even the singles that grab me, I can tell from other material it won’t be an album’s worth (and by god, I’m still going to clamor for the full album that grabs me).

I need to (nervously) check out the Headlights’ latest album, because some how their “Kill Them With Kindness” album resonated with me. Based on the lone single I’ve heard, though I fear disappointment there, too.

The Tipping Point

But you know what really killed it for me? Some outfit called Airborn Toxic Event has a song “Sometime around Midnight” that sounds to my ears like a close (and worse) rip-off of LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends.” Structure, pace (slowed down for dramatic effect), lyrical rhythm: The first time I heard it, I thought somebody was just making up new words and instruments to the same song, a song I rather dig. Maybe a tribute? No, not so.

They’re not at all the same, yet they’re the same. Also hindering my appreciation: The lyrics of the former are whining about a girl, treading the wrong side of that line (for my money) between sincerely sentimental and just melodramatic. Yuck.

Finally, a song that I’ve heard multiple weeks in a row from whatever radio feed is used at our Saturday morning hockey: Some bastard decided to cover Pearl Jam’s “Black” — a pretty classic song, Pearl Jam-wise — by doing nothing but slowing it down even further and even dragging out the lyrics to truly oversaturate the drama. The original “Black” was already quite slow and already tread that line between moving slow song and over-the-top. So this cover is like some tool in his dorm room saying, “No, that song means so much to me, I need to slow it down, drag it out and make it mean more.”

So yeah, I guess I’m a snob, I’m being overly negative, and I need some serious help in the ol’ music catalog department. But this cover makes me vomit. And makes me want to dig back through some Butthole Surfers to exorcise the damage it inflicted. At least they knew how to do a cover (of “Hurdy Gurdy Man“) to hilarious effect.

About it.

Ps : Under Control

OH OUI OH OUI!
