If you’ve lived in East Anglia in the last 6ish years or you’ve studied at the Universit

If you’ve lived in East Anglia in the last 6ish years or you’ve studied at the University of East Anglia, you will know about Connected Wednsday nights at Optic and how they are, without exception, the best club night in the region by a long, long way.

They started back in Sept 2004 when good friend and fellow promoter David (Smiley) and I decided that Norwich was missing a forward thinking urban club night (literally at this point everywhere played souful house or cheese) and we put our thoughts into action by launching in Freshers week. Entry was £1 and drinks were £2 all night. We had 600 people through the door on our first night, which any promoter will tell you is a job well done. But anyone can rent-a-crowd for a night the difficulty is in longevity, but we had near capacity or capacity nights week in week out every week.

When we were searching for local resident djs, we came across a BBC news article for a lad called Joshua Roberts who had just won an under 18s national DJ competition, judged by Tim Westwood & friends. He was 17 at the time but we thought, what the heck let’s have a chat. We did and it went well, we watched footage of his competition and a live UK Garage mix and he was faultless. Technically, very high enery and his hidden gift too we discovered was his microphone ability – he can seriously hype a crowd better than any other person I’ve worked with. Too many urban nights these days neglect good hosts btw.

Josh had the garage and club classics covered, so we turned to another friend ‘Big Shaz’ for the Hip Hop, RnB & Grime. Now, Big Shaz was a promoters dream – he had a loyal and consistent following and a detailed music bank even though he wasn’t technically gifted, he still tore the roof off those early Connected parties.

It was at this point that I made a concerted effort to learn to DJ and Smiley soon became familar with the microphone too. Shaz stayed with us for about a year until he moved away and Josh was our weekly headliner for about 3 years and only departed because his hectic schedule meant he was constantly abroad, so Smiley and I took over musical duties with the help of UK Garage legend and dear friend, ‘MC Wicked’. Over the years, other djs and hosts have been involved including most recently UK DMC Champion ‘DJ Cable’ and Ipswich’s Lexus but I can’t forget the musical efforts of Beepers, Johnbwoy, Justin, Jason, DJ@War, Brett, Dutty Menace, Sunisa and many others along the way.

We’ve also had some great guest performers at Connected events over the years including Tinchy Stryder, Skepta, JME, Jammer, Bashy, Ghetts, Devlin, DJ Semtex, DJ G Child, Aggro Santos MC Creed, MC Kie & dozens more who I cannot remember right now.

Optic Wednesdays aside, we’ve also had a few of super sell-out events at the University of East Anglia as well as a 2 year residency at Bar Mission in Yarmouth. They’ve been good, but in all honestly, they’ve not come close to Optic Wednesdays.

As they say, all good things come to an end, and the end is now. I’ve been in Norwich for 6 years now and whilst I’ve enjoyed my time in N town, I’ve moved back to London because I miss it. Connected in East Anglia is no more. I’m concentrating on Djing, giving promoting a break for a short while. I dare say I’ll be back to DJ in East Anglia soon, and I might even do some more Connected events should the right offer present itself to me.

When you look back at something you’ve done for 6 years, it’s impossible to remember to thank everyone who has helped you along the way, so I won’t even attempt it, except to thank Tom for his insight and wisdom into running club nights and to Gary for believeing in me in the early days and continuing to allow me to use the venue to do something I loved doing.

Optic is still open on Wednesday nights, and whilst I believe the music had been tailored away from the underground, the club, the people and the vibes are still rocking. Check it out.

“Social intercourse” – that is actually the second definition for conversation in “The America

“Social intercourse” – that is actually the second definition for conversation in “The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.” Okay, so the first definition for conversation is “an informal spoken exchange of thoughts and feelings; a familiar talk.” Can you really blame me for liking the second one more? Furthermore, conversations are no longer just spoken. The digital age has changed that, but the fundamentals are still the same.

Are you having social media conversations or are you just marketing and promoting? Are you just talking without listening? Have you ever had a good relationship with someone that just talks and doesn’t listen? Then why should you expect your target audience to have a relationship with you or your brand if you are not listening?

Readers of my articles are probably familiar with my recommended LCR (Listen-Conversations-Relationships) Mentality for successful social media implementation. The LCR Mentality talks about one aspect of listening. Specifically it states …

“Know your target audience and find the existing places and communities where they are talking, tweeting, blogging, commenting, etc. Spend some time there and just LISTEN to what they value and need. Understand the way they talk and their vernacular. If you want to be a valued member of the club, you got to talk their talk, not yours.”

There is no doubt – this is extremely important. But there is another listening aspect that is equally important. In a conversation, listening is a continuous process and it should be in social media as well. You must actively and continuously monitor (or listen) to what is being said about you. Yes, this takes time, but it can not be an ignored process.

Why is active and continuous listening important:

1) You should know if the content you are producing is generating “word of mouth” results. In addition to measuring “hits”, you also want to know if “the baton is being passed on” and the message continues down the line. Referrals/advocacy are much more compelling than your communication. If your content is good, of value, and/or compelling, your audience will help it travel. Retweets and referrals are a good barometer of “goodness” and value of your communication.
2) Positive sentiments related to you or your brand should be captured. Reference the positive mentions. One of the key objectives of social media optimization is “helping your content travel.” I follow a number of twitter accounts who reference every mention they find. Find positive things stated – get it out for the crowd to hear.
3) When someone says something negative about you or your brand, you must nip it in the butt – immediately. Bad news travels fast and it is best to catch and squash it. If you find negative occurrences, you should take one of two paths. If the comment is actually reflective of the truth – fess up, apologize, and state the corrective action taken. We all make mistakes and I have found that good will comes from this approach. If the comment is hogwash, just state the facts – objectively. Do not get lured into a subjective debate. Recently, I read of a comment from a disenchanted customer that blogged about a retail store where they felt they purchased something they did not want and were stuck with it. The customer bad mouthed the store beyond the issue. The store owner replied in the blog and stated that they were in business for 20 years and had always had a no return policy that was always communicated. This was the factual objective issue. They then offered to speak with the customer directly as opposed to continue to debate in a public forum.

Let me give you a couple of useful tools to help you “listen.” There are no shortages of free and paid services for this. I’ll suggest a few free ones I use …

Monitter.com – searches twitter by geography. You enter search words, distance, and a zip code and it returns the tweets for the search criteria within the distance set relative to the zip code. This is extremely useful for localized businesses.

Collecta.com – searches Twitter, blogs and blog comments … pretty comprehensive.

Socialmention.com – similar to Google alerts … it is an email automated search, but picks up tweets and search results in blogs as well.

There are numerous others and you can drive yourself silly trying to keep up, but these are the latest I have been using. (Until I read the next review tomorrow and find the next hot one … feel free to add your suggestions in a comment below ). A good list is provided at “A Wiki of Social Media Monitoring Solutions”. It includes paid solutions as well as free ones.

But please, “listen” to me and do me one favor – be a better listener! I guarantee you it will pay dividends. Do you hear what I am saying?

Neglect. Ignoring important things – people that matter, bills, coursework, maintaining a semb

Neglect. Ignoring important things – people that matter, bills, coursework, maintaining a semblance of organization in my room…the month of October in general.

You could call it fail, too, but that’s a bit rough, and would be a bad way to try and catch up on over a month of not writing. Over a month! Fuck it. We call that failure.

The Month of October:

1. The Death of Reggie. This is a recent occurrence…I believe he died a whole three days ago. I was on my way home from glorious Esme’s with a certain Miss Clements in tow when I decided that a particular gorgeous tree, wrapped in fog and splashed with streetside lamplight, would make an awesome photo. Sans camera, out came Reggie, and what do you know…that was the last I saw of him. Did I put him back in my purse? Did I accidentally slip him past my purse and not hear him hit the ground? Did he jump out a few minutes later when Laura and I decided to run for all of fifty feet? God only knows, but the end is the same. Reggie is dead, and now I have Horatio – a modular downgrade, but we’re hoping an inability-to-get-lost upgrade – and life is good again.

2. A Slew of LCR’s That, Though Thematically Similar to Those of Last Year, Were Definitely Not As Good. Now, this event is pretty self-explanatory. I’m not saying I haven’t had any fun this year – far from it – but it’s definitely not going down the way shit flew this time last year. I didn’t really expect a repeat of the awesomeness of Action Man, School Daze, and the like…but I won’t lie: the LCR, when not packed with three essential Australians, one Maggie McBride, and the entirety of D5 in one orgy of awesomeness, is just not the same. Still fun, and chock full of double vodka Redbulls and the folks that have had one too many – but not the same. Rave on!

3. The Gradual Digression of My Room Into a State of Chaos. Towards the end of September, my room still maintained a shred of identifiable dignity. No longer. Total, we’re looking at one square foot of uncovered floorspace, and my drying laundry hanging on shelves, doors, and desktop until it gets worn and tossed groundward. The three guys I live with are quickly learning that communal spaces can’t really exist without some part of my wardrobe inhabiting them.

4. Classes With One Of My Favorite Teachers Ever. (That would be Joad Raymond.) Legend! I don’t really understand what goes on in 17th Century Writing a lot of the time, but Joad is nice enough to smile and nod when I say things that make absolutely no sense. Like, I don’t know, when I relate the Pastoral movement of Fantasia to a stanza in a John Milton poem. Me and Milton, we don’t really jive. At least thus far in my life, seeing as every time I try and talk about him or something he’s written in a seminar, I end up looking like a complete idiot (i.e. using the word “dude” while paraphrasing Paradise Lost). So yeah, Joad is amazing.

5. The Ludicrously Beautiful Transformation of Summeresque Norwich into Norwich in the Fall. Maybe it’s because I lived on campus last year and didn’t constantly see so much of the city…but I swear, I never noticed how incredibly beautiful this city is in the fall. Every single leaf is in the gorgeous process of death. That sounds morbid, but maybe slightly poetic? It’s true either way. The trees here are on fire and it’s amazing. Most every time I walk home from work I’m inspired to photograph some part of the journey. That is, when I’m not wearing the Boots of Death and falling on my ass while crossing cross-walks in front of loads of cars. But Norwich in the fall – or autumn, as I’m regularly corrected on this side of the Atlantic – makes me wish that life was a constant Renaissance Faire. I know that sounds like the most random feeling ever, but it’s true. The amazing costumes and drunkeness and endless amount of character that is a ren faire PLUS the gorgeous goldenosity of autumn in this city? I can’t really think of much that would be more amazing.

Speaking of not really being able to think, I’m at a loss mentioning anything interesting that’s happened over the past neglected month. How sad is that? I really should learn my lesson and just not not write for absolute ages at a time. Hardly does anything for my readership, I’m sure.

Completely off topic, but hopefully the kind of interesting something that will keep you clicking back for more, the online game Winterbells (http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/g3/bells.htm) is amazing. Seriously. I have spent more time than I like to acknowledge playing that game, studiously ignoring mounds of coursework. I’m even struggling as I type this to not to hit ctrl + t and open it up in a new tab for a few rounds. I am so lame. Give it a whirl though – in the Christmas spirit! (As somebody who lives in a country that doesn’t wait till the day after Thanksgiving to slather the mall in Christmas decorations, I’m allowed to encourage this).

I am officially coming home for Christmas break! Which is only 47 days away. HOLY SHIT, where does the time go. At this rate I will be violently hurled into the real world and all of the bill-y and career-y and debt-y stuff thus included in about, oh, two days. That is most definitely what it feels like…meaning I should probably get going on that manuscript I’ve promised myself I’ll have finished by the time I graduate. Ah, having the will power to work on the same story for more than twenty pages. I bet that feels awesome. I certainly wouldn’t know.

One thing I do know, once again, completely unrelated, is that I never thought I would drink beer by choice. My whole drinking life it has been disgusting and people have insisted that eventually I will acquire the taste and I have insisted right back at them that no, I will never enjoy the taste of carbonated urine. And then you have me now. Me, who, thanks to a weekly soup-and-beer-centered meeting with Esme and Laura, randomly has the urge to have a beer with dinner. WHAT HAPPENED. I blame Esme and Laura. And living with boys.

Boys who, up until about two weeks ago, loved to do nothing more than complain about how much I shed (to be fair, it was a rather beastly amount). Why don’t they complain anymore, you ask? Because I chopped all of my hair off and am, once again, a pixie! This time, I carry it off a whole lot better and look more stylish than boyish, which was the unfortunate result of the last pixie-esque cut back in my junior year of high school. So yay for whims (Eleanor, that’s you!) and Callum the amazing hairdresser and basically life in general, because no matter how much I procrastinate or neglect or whine or do anything, life is awesome.

Yeah. Top five things I need to remember: Life is awesome.

(And yes, I know that’s not five things.)

Mastering (?) Social Media – A Perspective for Companies Is there such a thing as Mastering Social M

Mastering (?) Social Media – A Perspective for Companies

Is there such a thing as Mastering Social Media?

I agreed to do a presentation on social media at a local community gathering. (The event is September 21, 2009 at 7pm at the Maplewood Library in Maplewood, NJ.) When the flyers and newsletter were circulated, the event read “Mastering Social Media” to be presented by Steve Goldner (aka Social Steve). I was horrified. I do not believe that anyone has “mastered” this less than mature toolset of listening, connecting, marketing, collaborating, engaging with your friends, colleagues, and potential and existing customers. And now, to have my name attached as being the one to deliver the secrets and goods of Mastering Social Media – how presumptuous and pompous. As it is, I am appalled at 99% of the self proclaimed “social media experts.”

Claiming mastery of social media is like claiming mastery of marriage. Does anyone claim to be a master of marriage? I’ve been married for 20+ years and anyone that has reached this milestone knows that marriage is hard work and that hard work is extremely rewarding. I am far from an expert, but I know that putting my heart and soul into marriage, continually listening and learning, has yielded an extraordinary relationship. You know, in a different facet, social media is very similar … you start with something you are very passionate about, apply your knowledge and expertise, and continually listen, communicate, learn, and strengthen relationships.

So now I am giving this presentation on Mastering Social Media. How can that even be done, yet alone, how can I be the one to give these answers? But wait, I rationalize what I have always known. There is no formal playbook to guarantee winning all the time. There are a few general rules of thumb or principles, and a few practices that have their roots in traditional marketing. No, this is not something that I have manufactured, but rather sound philosophies and doctrines that I have simplified and integrated. While I will not claim that they will allow you (or me) to master social media, I will tell you that you will experience increased measurable winning results. This is nothing new that I haven’t already preached, just a consolidated overview …

To start, I recently introduced the concept of the LCR Mentality in an article “Simplifying Social Media.” LCR stands for Listen-Conversations-Relationships. In order for anyone using social media to gain awareness and generate qualified leads for their organization, they must abandon the mindset of promoting and selling in place of a way to establish valued relationships much like in their personal life. By listening, you establish the commonalities (and differences) you have. Having this information (data) allows you to have relevant conversations with your audience and its individuals. Good conversation leads to the start of a relationship. Building stronger relationships yield better customers. (See “Using the Social Media “A-path” to Capture Ultimate Customers”). While the LCR mentality requires specific social media executable steps, I emphasize a LCR frame of mind. A continued conscious effort of listening, conversing, and building relationships will pay residual dividends to your organization.

If you have the right mindset, you are half way to winning the social media game. The next requirement is to integrate social media into your marketing plan. Social media should be viewed as one element of the marketing plan – not the marketing plan. There are a couple of pieces of traditional marketing that must be in place – 1) your positioning statement, and 2) the marketing communication objective/plan. (Also see “Before You Start with Social Media.”)

Your positioning statement is not something that is communicated necessarily, but is the base of all communications. It indicates the target customer, the product/service category, significant benefit, competitor, and key differentiation. Once formally defined, all communication should be tested against the positioning statement to ensure appropriate and compelling correspondence.

The marketing communication objectives and plan define the communication or campaign goals, the target audience and their perceptions, content or information to establish subject-matter expertise status, and a call to action. Your goals define what you are attempting to accomplish (generate leads, build awareness, shift an attitude, build a client database, etc.) and quantify desired results (hits on a website; new subscribers, “friend/connect” or “fans”, leads; requests of info, etc.). The target audience can be a subset of your target market segment – you may be speaking to a specific sub-segment. You need to do an honest assessment of your audience’s perceptions (both positive and negative) and determine what perceptions you want to strengthen and reinforce and which ones you want to change. All of this should support the positioning statement. The intent is to move your audience down the marketing funnel. You do this by having a call to action to get them more engaged with your company. CAUTION – do not try to sell them here! Work on getting a deeper and stickier relationship.

I am not suggesting that these steps will make anyone a master of social media, but they will steer you on the right road. Social media is a relatively new area. There are some known best practices and some more that will evolve. Monitor and measure your endeavors. Tweak your implementation based upon measured results … “individual mileage <del datetime="2009-09-08T23:55:02+00:00">may</del> will vary.”

Want the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle for social media success? Think of what I call the LCR Mentality …

LISTEN
CONVERSATIONS
RELATIONSHIPS

Social media power is building relationships that value what you offer and yield the ultimate customers – advocate customers. You can accomplish this if you train your mind to morph from a “selling mentality” to a “LCR mentality.” The relationships you build will be your new channels for sales. Thus you will have a wider breadth of and much more compelling sales channel – a positive socialized sales channel.

LISTEN …
Know your target audience and find the existing places and communities where they are talking, tweeting, blogging, commenting, etc. Spend some time there and just LISTEN to what they value and need. Understand the way they talk and their vernacular. If you want to be a valued member of the club, you got to talk their talk, not yours.

CONVERSATIONS …
Once you have gained a solid understanding of your target audience and how they socialize in the various forums and communities, start to engage in the conversation. Remember, don’t sell. This should be more of a friendly conversation or networking nature.

RELATIONSHIPS …
Continue conversations and work on building trusted relationships. Trust is established by having good rapport and delivering value. You deliver value to a target audience group, but you establish relationships one-on-one. That said, put out valuable information to your target audience and follow up with one-on-one conversations.

Social media is an extremely powerful tool set, when used correctly. Start by consciously moving to a LCR mentality. The LCR mentality is not a recipe for success, but rather a mind-shift for most marketing and sales professionals.

I did not get in shape overnight and social media won’t turn short time results, but the benefit of both in the long haul is enormous. So work it baby, work it … and have fun along the way.

Lyssnar just nu på: Nightwish – Feel for you.
Den låten är Awsome!

Someday, I will feed a snake
Drink her venom, stay awake
With time all pain will fade
Through your memory I will wade

When done with me
Forget if you think I feel ashamed
A wild thing
Never felt sorry for anything

(Nightwish – Bare Grace Misery)

Today I took my mother to the range to try out the two firearms she purchased last week; a Browning Buckmark (range report) and a Ruger LCR.

For those unfamiliar with the Ruger LCR. It is Ruger’s long-awaited answer to Smith & Wesson’s airweight line. It is the first polymer based revolver made in the western world. (The Russian’s beat us to it with a break open revolver manufactured by Izhevsk.)

It has a 5 round capacity, and handles .38 Special +P. The LCR has a strongly fluted cylinder, which reduces weight. I personally find it quite attractive and reminiscent of the the pepperboxes from the 1800’s. The cylinder and the barrel is made of steel. The front frame is made of aluminum. The rear of the frame, which houses the firing control housing, is made of polymer. All of this leads to a fairly lightweight revolver.

For those who are new to the world of firearms. There is an inverse relationship between the perceived recoil of a firearm and it’s weight. A heavy firearm like the Ruger MK Hunter firing a small round such as a .22LR results in very low recoil. Where as the very small Ruger LCP which fires what is considered a fairly small cartridge, the .380, has a lot of perceived recoil. Likewise, the LCR is a very light gun for it’s cartridge.

I did have some concern recommending said firearm to my mother. Many have commented on the numerous women who have been sold airweight snubbies by the likes of Jolly Joe behind the counter at the gunstore. I really did not want to make that mistake. My mother tends to find the kick of a gun exciting and envigorating. What she finds difficult is fine motor skills with her thumbs due to trigger finger and carpal tunnel (officer work related). And that’s one point the LCR excels at; having a nice easy trigger pull.

But I was still nervous that it might be too much kick…

***

My mother fired the first five rounds. Her first one was a flyer, but the next four she put all in the red, this was at 12 ft. That’s a pretty common distance for a personal engagement. She expressed a little intimidation with the first shot. But said the following four were much easier. This may have been due to her adjusting her grip or simply knowng what to expect.

Next I had her try it at 21ft. She put all five rounds in the center torso region, including 3 in a 1″ circle in the red center. Pretty darn good IMHO!

I took a shot myself. And while I can say it has a fair amount of kick, it was not overwhelming. A bit akin to firing a hot .357 in my fullsize 6″ GP100 revolver. (At some point I’d like to compare it our LCP. My gutt feeling is that the LCR is slightly less jarring than the LCP.) The grip does help quite a bit in reducing the intensity; both by providing a soft squishy impact absorbent material and by widening the grip so as to spread the forces over a broader area. At no point did I feel that the LCR was straining to be controlled.

My mother and I went through a 50 round box of Walmart Winchester white box .38 Specials. Neither of us left with sore hands. In fact, my mother commented shortly before we wrapped up that she was barely noticing the recoil any longer. That’s not to say there was no recoil. Just that it is maneagable enough not to impede the mere fun of shooting the LCR.

Needless to say, it does not look like my mother will be taking me up on the offer to buy the gun off of her. Oh well…guess if I want to shoot it I can always have her come down for a visit.

This weekend I spent some time shopping for handguns with my mother. We went to a newly built Cabel

This weekend I spent some time shopping for handguns with my mother. We went to a newly built Cabela’s about an hour away. Figuring they’d have one of the better selections in the area.

My mother has some firearms experience. Our family owned a Ruger .357, and she always loved shooting it. A few months ago Freedom Armory had a S&W demonstration, my mother was down visiting that weekend so we went to the demonstration. My mom tried out a number of firearms including an M&P in 9mm, & 45, a 1911 and a few revolvers including some airweights and a .44 Magnum. I used the demonstration to show her how the difference in weight affected the perceived recoil. That the .45 in 1911 had less perceived recoil than the 9mm in polymer. My mother really liked the 1911, describing it as being akin to a smooth whiskey. While she did notice the kick and feel of the various revolvers, she did well with them all.

So what were the requirements that we were looking for?

First and foremost my mom wanted a .22LR, as she has access to a small cultural club that has a 22 caliber rifle range in the basement. And I believe that a .22 is a good choice. Ammo, while not abundant these days, is still affordable. Allowing for a great amount of practice. My mom is also fond of revolvers. So she was leaning toward getting a revolver chambered in .22LR. And maybe getting a second firearm down the road.

So we had a couple of options for a .22: a) revolver, b) dedicated semi-auto, c) a conversion kit for a semi-auto such as a Glock or 1911.

We looked at a number of the .22 LR revolvers. Discussing single-action versus double-action, with the latter being my mother’s preference. (She suffers from trigger finger and carpal tunnel. So the idea of having to cock the hammer for each firing did not appeal to her.) She was also leaning strongly toward revolvers, as that is what she has past experience with. Semi-autos are an unfamiliar territory.

They had three models to choose from. A Taurus in a smaller to mid-size frame. A full size S&W, and a third Taurus that was a small compact in the J-frame style. The S&W was priced higher than we were wanting to pay. The mid-size Taurus was $379. I did not like the trigger on the Taurus. The S&W was significantly better. The J-frame Taurus was a little better than the first Taurus but still no where near as nice as the Smith. Furthermore, my mom really did not want a snubbie .22LR.

I really wasn’t quite satisfied with the Taurus. I didn’t like how it felt and the trigger was atrocious. While I am not opposed to using a .22 for self-defense, I did not feel confident about relying upon that particular Taurus. The Smith & Wesson, while having a nicer trigger was a little too big for my mother. Even I had to extend a bit to reach the trigger. Furthermore it was nearly $800.

While there I also had my mother handle a couple of Rugers. Namely a 3″ SP101 chambered in .357, and the Ruger LCR chambered in .38 Special. My mom was familiar with the concept of how the weight of the gun affects the perceived recoil. But I re-explained to her that the 3″ SP101 would be a much easier firearm to shoot than the LCR, however, it was significantly heavier. The triggers on both the SP101 and LCR were much easier to operate than on Taurus, and while I might start a flame war. We even preferred the trigger pulls of the Ruger over the .22 S&W.

So we weighed the benefits and disadvantages of each:

3″ SP101
+ Reduced Recoil
+ Old Proven Design
+ Can shoot either .357 or .38 Special

LCR
+ Lightweight
+/- more recoil due to it’s weight, but a design that softens it a bit
- .38 Special only
- new radical design, not as proven
+ if she didn’t like it, she could sell it (namely to me)

She liked both firearms. But we went back to the fact that my mom needed a 22 caliber pistol. So we discussed this fact. As I really wasn’t too keen on the Taurus they had. And it was the only double-action, non-snubbie that was in our price range.

I suspected that my mom’s desire for a .22 revolver stemmed from her unfamiliarity with semi-autos. Why? Because I went through this same situation in my mind when I became a gun owner. I made a suggestion. For $40 less than the Taurus we could get a Browning Buckmark. It’s a .22 but a semi-auto. I said to my mom “If the only reason you’re hesitant to do so, is because you have no familiarity with semi-autos. Than wouldn’t it make a lot of sense to get familiar with semi-autos via a .22?”

My reasoning made sense; perhaps because it was the same reasoning I used on myself when I bought my Ruger MKIII. And I could have suggested the MKIII but being aware of the difficulty in disassembly I thought that could be a roadblock for my mother. I had heard a lot of people recommend the Buckmarks as well. In fact, usually I hear people say get either a Ruger MK or Browning Buckmark avoid the Walthers, Mosquitos, and others.

So I suggested that we consider getting the Browning Buckmark instead of the .22 revolver. Then purchase a second firearm for personal defense. Namely, either the Ruger SP101 or LCR. This idea seemed to jibe well with my mother. Especially when she realized that her only reason not to was a lack of familiarity. And that she did want to eventually understand how to utilize a semi-automatic pistol. (I also think she became much more keen on the idea when she held the Browning Buckmark in her hand. She was amazed how comfortable it was with the soft molded rubber grip.)

So we returned to the other table to evaluate the two Rugers. The salesman spent a fair amount of time with us, even though there had been a line behind us and he was the only one at the counter. I wager the fact that we were discussing the possibility of buying two firearms made us a worthwhile customer. If they’re considering two, they probably at least buy one! Thankfully, by this a second employee arrived to help the other customers.

It was a tough decision to make. Both the SP101 and LCR were very nice revolvers. While my mom was a bit disappointed in the fact that the LCR did not chamber .357 Magnums. (She loves the kick of a gun.) I ensured her that in such a light gun the .38 Specials will be quite akin to .357 Magnums, and not to worry. She did like the feel of the SP101. Felt it had a nice weight. But when I asked her would she be comfortable carrying that on her person, say in her fanny pack all day. She she shook her head and said “No…”

We finally decided upon the Ruger LCR. The deciding factors were that she’d be more likely to carry it. And it had the easiest trigger of any of the revolvers we had tried that day. This is important because of the nerve damage she has suffered. It was also the deciding factor for me in encouraging her to go with the LCR. I know my mom is not defrayed by the kick of a gun as many are, in fact quite enjoying it. But she would be deferred by the hard mechanics of a trigger pull. Had she bought the Taurus we first looked at, I’d be concerned about her being able to pull the trigger in another 5-10 yrs. Where as I felt confident that she would be able to successfully, and repeatedly pull the trigger on the LCR. A final caveat, the fact that I would like to get an LCR, I gave my mom the following offer – if you get the LCR and decide you want something different, I’ll buy it off of you. (While I really liked the 3″ SP101, it really would be more akin to a slightly smaller version of my GP100. I could not justify buying it at price. Where as the LCR would fill a niche in my collection, is on my list to buy, and therefore would not have difficulty buying it off of my mom if the need arose (although I doubt such need will arise).

So enters into the statistics another 50+ yr old woman joining the ranks of new gun owners!

- N.U.G.U.N.

PS – Yes, I’ll give everyone a range report on the LCR in the next week or two. I am very curious to know how it feels as well.

Celui qui se range en paroles seulement du côté du peuple révolutionnaire, mais agit tout autrement, est un révolutionnaire en paroles;
Extrait du « Petit Livre Rouge – Citation du président Mao Tsé-Toung »
http://www.chine-informations.com/fichiers/petit-livre-rouge.pdf

Alt dette får tidsskriftet New Statsma

Tidsskriftets journalist Andrew Hussey skriver:

I have been living full-time in Paris for the past four years and reporting from the city for nearly 20. I have, therefore, become accustomed to frequent street protests. But I have never seen anything quite like the anger that has been building up during demonstrations over the past few months against the government of Nicolas Sarkozy.

Viljen til å slå tilbake regjeringas antisosiale politikk virker veldig sterk. Studenter og universitetsstab blokkerer universitetene. Jernbanearbeidere og postansatte streiker. De ansatte i helsevesenet demonstrerer mot en reform som gir sykehusledelsen økt makt over helsearbeiderne og større mulighet til å bestemme over behandlingstilbudet på hvert enkelt sykehus.

We are sick of being told we have no control over our own lives,” Rachida Ahloulay, one of the dancing nurses, tells me. “It’s not just that the government is giving managers the power over medical staff,” she says, “but it means that we are degraded as citizens. And that is why France is on the edge of a serious rebellion. Anger is everywhere!”

It is likely that the NPA’s impact on the European elections will be statistically insignificant – the party is unlikely to garner more than 4.5 per cent of the vote; but as a cultural phenomenon its impact has been enormous. The NPA describes itself as being “from the street”: its celebrity supporters include the rapper JoeyStarr and the footballer Franck Ribéry (as well as the decidedly un-street Ken Loach). That accounts for why the NPA is the favoured political choice of more than 40 per cent of young people in France, the vast majority of them having shown no previous interest in Trotsky, but who now proudly declare their membership of Génération Olivier.

For å sitere Slavoj Žižek:

Think about the strangeness of today’s situation. Thirty, forty years ago, we were still debating about what the future will be: communist, fascist, capitalist, whatever. Today, nobody even debates these issues. We all silently accept global capitalism is here to stay. On the other hand, we are obsessed with cosmic catastrophes: the whole life on earth disintegrating, because of some virus, because of an asteroid hitting the earth, and so on. So the paradox is, that it’s much easier to imagine the end of all life on earth than a much more modest radical change in capitalism.

- Η καπιταλιστική κρίση έδωσε το έναυσμα μιας μεγάλης επίθεσης του κεφαλαίου ενάντια στους εργαζόμενους. Ποια μέτρα παίρνει η κυβέρνηση Σαρκοζί; Ποιο ρόλο παίζει η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση στην εκτύλιξη των επιθέσεων ενάντια στους εργαζόμενους;

- Ποιες είναι οι εργατικές αντιστάσεις στη Γαλλία; Έχουν άραγε καταγραφεί επιτυχίες ή νίκες σε αυτές τις μάχες; Ποια είναι η τοποθέτηση των επίσημων συνδικάτων; Μπορούμε να διαπιστώσουμε διαφοροποιήσεις των εργαζομένων απέναντι στις συνδικαλιστικές γραφειοκρατίες; Μπορείς να μας πεις δυο λόγια για νέες μορφές πάλης, όπως η κράτηση σε ομηρία μεγάλων αφεντικών ή στελεχών τους;

- Ποια είναι η συμμετοχή του NPA στους αγώνες των εργαζομένων και ιδιαίτερα στις πιο μαχητικές αντιστάσεις;

- Το νεοϊδρυθέν NPA χαρακτηρίζεται σαν αντικαπιταλιστικό. Πώς χαρακτηρίζεις την οικονομική κρίση; Είναι μια διαχειριστική κρίση; Κρίση ενός μοντέλου καπιταλισμού; Μια κρίση του φιλελευθερισμού; Μήπως είναι μια βαθιά καθολική κρίση του καπιταλισμού της εποχής μας; Ζητούμενο είναι να αλλάξουμε τη διαχείριση ή μήπως να παλέψουμε ενάντια στον καπιταλισμό και να βρεθούμε σε ρήξη με το σύστημα;

- Ποιο πρόγραμμα άμεσων εργατικών διεκδικήσεων προτείνετε στους εργαζόμενους;

- Γίνεται συζήτηση και στην Ελλάδα και στη Γαλλία για το τι είναι αναγκαίο σήμερα: ένα αντιφιλελεύθερο ή ένα αντικαπιταλιστικό πρόγραμμα;

-Το NPA κατεβαίνει αυτόνομα στις ευρωεκλογές, έχοντας αρνηθεί εκλογική συνεργασία με το ΚΚΓ και το Κόμμα της Αριστεράς (Μελανσόν). Πολλοί σας κατηγορούν για σεκταρισμό. Γιατί αρνηθήκατε μία τέτοια συνεργασία;

- Εξετάζετε το ενδεχόμενο να συμμετάσχετε σε μια κυβέρνηση της Αριστεράς στο όνομα της μάχης κατά της κρίσης;

- Ζούμε σε μια εποχή κρίσης του καπιταλισμού, αλλά και κρίσης –καθώς και παραπέρα υποταγής – της σοσιαλδημοκρατίας και της ρεφορμιστικής Αριστεράς. Αναδύεται σαν απάντηση ένας νέος πολιτικός ριζοσπαστισμός; Θα μπορούσε να κινηθεί σε μια αντικαπιταλιστική κατεύθυνση; Υπάρχουν ανάλογα παραδείγματα στην Ευρώπη;

- Ποια είναι η γνώμη σου για το εγχείρημα της ΑΝΤΑΡΣΥΑ;

- Υπάρχει μια κριτική που γίνεται στο NPA, σύμφωνα με την οποία έχει εγκαταλείψει το κομμουνιστικό προφίλ της LCR -και αυτό μάλιστα σε μια περίοδο όπου ενισχύεται η ανάγκη μιας θετικής εναλλακτικής προοπτικής απέναντι στο καπιταλιστικό αδιέξοδο- και πως έχει υποτιμήσει την κρίσιμη θεματική της επανάστασης για την ανατροπή του καπιταλισμού. Τι απαντάτε στην κριτική αυτήν;

- Συμμετέχετε στις ευρωπαϊκές εκλογές. Θεωρείς άραγε ότι είναι δυνατόν να αλλάξουν πράγμα τα μέσα από το Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο ή μέσα από τους άλλους θεσμούς της ΕΕ; Γενικότερα, είναι άραγε δυνατόν να αλλάξει η ΕΕ χαρακτήρα και να γίνει μια ένωση στην υπηρεσία των λαών; Ποιες είναι οι προτάσεις σας για την ΕΕ;

- Ποιο μήνυμα θα ήθελες να μεταφέρεις στην ΑΝΤΑΡΣΥΑ;

Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, change is always good even if that change causes a bit of disruption to the comfort zone. Comfort causes complacency and that in itself is a slow death and we’re not down with that just yet. What’s the definition of insanity? It’s doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So, time for change—stay tuned. Yay!

Hello to the members of the Lower Class Revolt!

Just around the corner! On May 20th we’ll be co-presenting a show at the Elbo Room here in San Francisco. You can look forward to stellar performances by the Sons of Eden, Sons of Eden, Buildings Breeding, Boomsnake and Snuffaluffagus. The Elbo Room is in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District. Easy to get here if you live here, so hope to see you there. As is our custome: Four bands, five bucks. Come on by!

On May 27th The Lower Class Revolt is overjoyed to be hosting premiere West Coast hardcore band PULLOUT ! The band has a new release out, “Eagles and Vultures”, so we can all look forward to a ton of new material. San Francisco’s Gutwrench is the main support and opening the show will be Skull Stomp. We may add another band for good measure! This all goes down at the Knockout in San Francisco and is only $5 bucks at the door.

We’re rapidly shifting gears here at LCR headquarters. We’re shirking the old and embracing the new. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, change is always good even if that change causes a bit of disruption to the comfort zone. . Comfort causes complacency and that in itself is a slow death and we’re not down with that just yet. What’s the definition of insanity? It’s doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So, time for change—stay tuned. Yay!
Say hello when you get the chance,
Mike and Zoe
San Francisco, California

Hi all, covering the NRA Annual Meeting convention and 2nd Amendment Bloggers Bash LIVE from Phoenix, AZ. It’s warm, hot even…but it’s a dry hot. Eric Shelton (of Handgun Podcast fame) and I were able to walk through the exhibit hall during setup, thanks to being members of the press.

I think the easiest thing for me to do is post a link to an auto-generated gallery of photos and then provide you a list of commentary below. This will kind of necessitate you having two windows open in order to read along. But otherwise, I’d be spending forever just putting together the photo gallery.

So here’s what I’ve got for you all…

http://www.nugun.org/photos/NRA2ABB/Day1ExhibitHall/index.html

- NRA Blog (I don’t think I even realized this existed. Or it wasn’t compatible with my RSS reader.)

- A few booths…. (Brownell’s, Hornady, NRA News, M1A’s courtesy of Springfield, Glock)

- Tactical Dummy showing some love to Tom over at GunDudes with Gunfightercast’s favorite holster.

- Kimber…and if a photo of a firearm is called gun porn…than this must be a whorehouse!

- Savage trigger for their new Troll rifles. But look at the nifty translucent rifle stock. Sadly, for display only. I want a translucent stock!

- Wait a second…as we passed by Eric exclaimed and pointed out this sign. A Winchester that is still made in America? Is this true? (As someone who grew up in New Haven, home of Winchester Repeating Arms. Winchester is truly a heartbraking tale for me.)

- And yes, the Ruger LCR. Oh how I love that fluted cylinder…it’s sexy. Has curves like a woman should have. But wait…what’s this empty shelf…guess we’ll find out 10am tomorrow morning.

- Odd pistol carbine thing. But really, Stargate should buy these. They’ve been using the P90’s for a while. This will look new and different and definitely futuristic.

- Eric and I started chatting with this gentlement over at Patriot Ordinance Firearms, Inc. (POF USA) Eric is quite interested in picking up one of their lowers, and they do look pretty sweet. We later discovered we were chatting with the owner. And I snagged a photo of the two. (Note Eric flashing the gang sign…j/k.)

- Smith & Wesson had their catalog on display at their booth. But Eric noted the Magpul MBUS back-up sight. Here it for you to see! While it is polymer, it looked pretty rugged.

***

Eric Shelton will be posting his photos as well. So check out the Handgun Podcast.

The C30

The C30 is a modular, full-featured, converged, voice and data solution for the SME environment. Designed from the ground up to serve the needs of the SME market sector which requires proven cost effectiveness, granular scalability and enormous flexibility, the C30 delivers bar none other. At the C30`s core is a one-of-a-kind modular architecture which gives it its unique appeal and allows it to grow with the enterprise in accordance with your requirements. In essence, the C30 architecture allows you to tailor-make/plug-and-play your own custom-fit communication system. Some of the functionality on offer:

Enterprise-ready telephony feature sets

Built-in least cost routing (LCR)

Support for digital exchange lines (BRI/PRI)

Support for analogue extensions for any ICASA-approved phone

Support for digital extensions for power users

Open-standards based IP extensions (SIP/H323) i.e. no vendor lock-in trap

An extensive voicemail system

Mature unified messaging features

Integrated ADSL router

Build in WiFi Router

Firewall

Remote management

And many more

Scalability
The C30 was designed to be scalable both in terms of extensions as well as exchange line connectivity options. As a minimal configuration the system acts as a traditional stand-alone 8×4 (extensions x exchange lines) PBX whereas as a maximum it can act as a 40×20 (extensions x exchange lines) standalone system and/or a full featured multi-node system with up to a 1000 systems being networked together (SIP Server Required) giving you virtually limitless scalability.

Extension Scalability
The basic system can be extended through 4 additional extension modules which provide 8 additional extension ports per module. This means that the C30 is inherently scalable with regards to extensions and can scale from 8 to 40 extensions in increments of 8 extensions at a time.

Exchange Line Scalability
With the addition of extension modules the system can also grow by 2 exchange line modules. Each exchange line module supports 2 exchange line ports. This means that with regard to exchange lines, the C30 scales from 4 to 20 exchange lines (digital or analogue) in increments of 2 ports at a time.

Reliability
The C30 is a hybrid system supporting both TDM (Time Division Multiplex as in traditional PBX`s) and IP communication (as in next generation converged IP-PBX). Being an inherent hybrid system (TDM and IP) you get the reliability benefits of both the connection (TDM) and connectionless (IP) oriented world. TDM systems do not rely upon the IT switching fabric to provide and maintain dial tone making them easier to deploy and less dependent on IT resources and expertise. IP-PBXs have the benefit of merging voice traffic with data traffic on one converged network infrastructure and providing advanced features such as presence management.
The C30 can also be equipped with a battery backup unit that will ensure that your business is able to receive and make calls during a power failure while analogue exchange lines are automatically switched to particular extensions to allow calls to be made and received on these lines until your businesses power can be restored, thus ensuring you business continuity. In addition to these features, the system can also be setup to automatically report alarms to your maintenance center of choice that will be able to rectify any anomalies before they become a constraining factor on your business. All in all, when blending the C30`s innate reliability assurance features with a strategic business disaster recovery plan then the system can present an always-on and available solution, even in times of disaster when your competitors become non contactable.

Cost Effectiveness
Whether you are a single 2 to 4 extension office or a multi-branch national or international enterprise with up to 40 extensions per branch the C30 is positioned to reduce your monthly communications expense while at the same time empowering your workforce to be more effective and more efficient.Using ‘Least Cost Routing’ (LCR) over multiple providers throughout different times of the day, built-in VoIP interfaces and free-of-charge internal calls, your monthly telephony expense is sure to shrink dramatically. However, the C30 platform is so much more then purely an exercise in cost management. In Tellumat’s view, cost reduction equates to only a fraction of the overall business benefits that a tailor-made, strategically aligned and accurately implemented communication solution has to offer your business` bottom line. It is these intangible intrinsic efficiency gains, even if difficult to quantify initially, which are a major factor to consider when going through a purchasing decision cycle for a communication solution.

As such, I invite you to contact me to request a comprehensive analysis of your business communication requirements in order to present to you a complete cost-benefit analysis in respect to the suitability of the C30 solution to your particular business. We don’t believe in selling PBX`s, we build and grow businesses by gearing them through innovative and cost effective technology.

Features
The C30 hosts a complete set of powerful digital features such as, but not limited to:

CLI

Networked call routing

Direct dialing in (DDI) for a big-company look and feel

Voicemail

Auto-Attendant

Courtesy Service

Custom Call Routing

HelpDesk

Hospitality Services

And many more

In addition to the standard set of features, you can now enable your business with free intra-site phone calls and enjoy lightning-fast e-mail and broadband access. These features, are of course accompanied with the peace of mind that cyber crime from the external network can not penetrate your C30`s state state-of-the-art firewall thus protecting your valuable business data.

Some select features:

Make low cost VoIP based calls to anywhere in the world or across the road using the C30`s build in VoIP functionalities.

Harness the versatility of next generation networks using build in connectivity options to both data and voice networks.

Deliver integrated content (voice and data) directly to your staff’s desktop (via your corporate network or wirelessly) thereby hugely increasing their efficiency potential.

Enable your workforce to work and access their data and voice resources remotely, any where any time.

Take the C30 to the maximum. Network a thousand systems together and create/manage a single dialing plan with up to 50000 extensions.

Enable your staff to work freely in the office without worrying about missing a single contact point. The C30 allows users to pick up their messages (internally and externally) anywhere in the world using any device available to them. Your staff will be contactable any time, any where on any device.

Delight your customers by staying open to request 24×7 by utilizing the C30`s powerful call routing features and automated directory services.

In addition to all of the standard traditional and non traditional telephony features, the C30 includes a complete and powerful set of data-voice features such as call recording which allows you to record all of your important calls.
Are you tired of being tied-in to your vendors’ devices? No more. Now you have the freedom to choose from any standard analogue phone or standards (SIP/H323) based IP terminal.

Do you require more control and versatility in your endpoint? No problem, opt for one of our digital telephones which offer a complete feature set to the end user in an intuitive and congruent manner.

Whether you want to setup a small office with a few handsets and a minimalistic feature set or you are planning to equip your global enterprise with carrier grade data-voice tools and features, the C30 will simply mould itself around you and your requirements. Downsize or upsize, move, add or change any part of your system any time, without missing a beat and zero downtime.

In Conclusion
Having highlighted what the system can do, what it is capable of and what organizational demographic is suited to a C30 platform, one can easily become stigmatized into believing that the C30 platform will suit all business profiles. This, simply, is not the case at all.The C30 platform caters only for businesses (single and multisite) which have a need of between 4 and 40 extensions per branch/office. Anything below or above these boundaries will be more appropriately served through other product-service offering from Tellumat Telecoms product line-up.Furthermore, it is important to stress the point that the C30 platform is intentionally designed as a hybrid solution. It is for these customers, which wish to begin to migrate to VoIP, but are not ready to take the complete leap into a pure IP world just yet. As such, if you require a traditional PBX or pure IP based system then contact us for our alternate product offerings that are more suited to your requirements.

Should you:

Have any further questions

Require a quotation

Would like a live demonstration

Are unsure of the platform`s suitability

Need a cost/benefit analysis

Then please do not hesitate to contact me at dschulte@tellumat.com

Hello to the members of the Lower Class Revolt!

A big round of thanks to all those who came out to the Knockout on April 29th to check out Agent Ribbons, Buildings Breeding, Grand Lake. It was a great night all around and the bands were amazing!

Now for some news and updates:

On May 15th Mike and Zoe will be on the wheels of steel spinning some music at the record release party for our good friends Raised by Robots. The whole thing goes down at the Café Du Nord and surely should not be missed. Silian Rail and Buzzer will be supporting the night. See you there!

On May 20th we’re co-presenting a show at the Elbo Room here in San Francisco featuring the Sons of Eden, Buildings Breeding, Boomsnake and Snuffaluffagus. This will be our first show at this venue and we’re looking forward to checking the place out. Up for checking it out with us as well? Four bands, five bucks. Come on by!

The Lower Class Revolt is very pleased to be hosting premiere West Coast hardcore band PULLOUT on May 27th at the Knockout. The band will be playing in support of their new release “Eagles and Vultures” which came out on out May 2nd. San Francisco’s Gutwrench will be supplying main support and we plan to add to more bands to the bill! $5 bucks, four bands. More details as the show gets closer.

Volume #4 our compilation is STILL coming together—I was out of town for a bit and I have to be honest, things have just fallen behind. Life is funny like that. Here’s the line-up all the same: Karabal Nightlife, Vox Jaguars, Fat Skeleton, Agent Ribbons, Bears! Bears! Bears!, Raised by Robots, Finest Dearest, Den, and Grand Lake! I think we’re looking a month easy on this one, so hang in there kids, I am.
