After over a year of having seen her face on a daily basis and selling her into the media, on Saturday night I am finally going to see fashion icon, Wonderbra designer and the world’s most iconic burlesque artist, Dita Von Teese perform at Le Crazy Horse, Paris. 

Dita is in Paris for a two-week ‘nude revue’ residency at Le Crazy Horse as of this week.

“I feel that Paris is a place that still appreciates its showgirls,” she toldReuters.” I’ve always had a real fascination with the Crazy Horse ever since I was a teenager and I found a picture of this line of nearly nude toy soldiers standing at attention (referring to the trademark parade that opens the nightly show). I wanted to do something more elaborate this time. Combine the Crazy Horse style with what I do which is classic American burlesque.”

Paris, ten something am, light greyness : I  can’t stand the “morning” concept anywhere in this bloody world. The almost desert Marais (the oldest area in the centre of Paris) slowly wakes up, like the ritual of an eccentric dignified old lady. A friend of a friend recognized me, I need an awakening. Warrior Ipod, the catchy single of Blondie, “Atomic”, played again and again, addicted.

The not straight old walls and the empty brightness of the sky, give an impression of a crumbling whiteness and a German expressionist set with crazy perspectives. Small door in raw wood, large stairs, the contrast of the thick black varnish and the small white letters, here I am, I ring: Gaspard Yurkievich, the fashion designer.

Spare white show room, a “message” neon light (“Romance is a surprise”) in front of a basic neon light, study atmosphere in the next room where the officers staff works. Few snapshots, colorful geometrical forms on black socks, on carryings the last man collection presented a week ago. Easy to feel the idea of rigour, with a controlled fancy side. Unpretentious, Gaspard comes with Virginie, his P.R. and we sit.

- Berçot, it’s a beat like a psychotherapy, like the Actor Studio.

Studies at  the Studio Berçot, an experience at Colonna (a famous French design of the nineties) and before the Hyères Festival (of the young creation) springboard, the “step” of assistant for shows in the Isabelle Roch press office:

- I needed to be less shy, to get more in touch with different people.

Smile and to add with mischievous eyes:

- Kid, I used to have my own world, I was never bored, I drew. I loved singing and dancing, music. Big crush on Diana Ross two years ago. I love dancing, the body. A unique idea of the body: it’s frightening! I dress my friends, they test and wear our clothes. We are really critical of ourselves.

I couldn’t stop myself telling him how much I’ve loved his shoes from the beginning:

- Thank you. It’s really easy for me to design shoes.

While Gaspard describes his “super Parisian and enough contemporary” fashion approach, his hands play with the shoes eels of the next season woman collection (here the supa hot pictures, an exclusivity just for you guys!):

- We got involved in Fashion business naïve and totally free. Imposing a language, an identity. Creating a sense between spirit and body: redefining the fashion “cliché “, a link between the establishment and the traditional. The philosophy of our brand is: item is a day mate. Today the approach is more and more elaborated. It’s sexy , but a real item. The first man collection was born from the woman collection’s foundations. But all collections exist by themselves.

Since childhood, Gaspard naturally enjoys the Contemporary Art and he collaborates for his fashion shows with many different artists, for exemple: Edouard Levé and the architect Didier Faustino.

- It’s a beat like a playtime at school, I’m like an art director on shows: a casting of visions, like keys given to people. We live a very intense moment. I need to work with people I like.

I think of the stylish dessert he designed for the “mythical” Café de La Paix:

- We love food, the idea of generosity. We wanted it sexy and “gourmand”: with a lucky charm in a case. First, I imagined for a Japanese magazine’s exhibition, a “Forêt Noire” cake crushed by a high eel shoe. Funny!

I moved, need different angles for the famous “creative mechanism”  of Gaspard. For his next woman collection, he was inspired by a book not sold in France (Pierre Berger and Karl Lagerfeld might stand in the way of a French version), “Beautiful Fall” of Alicia Drake. I really like the concept, a forbidden book!

- The story of Yves Saint Laurent, Lagerfeld, Antonio Lopez. The seventies: how people dressed, it’s not interesting at all. It’s more the Couture spirit, the muses, Loulou de La Falaise: taking their energy, the fantasy of this period. The passing down between the Couture and the Ready-to-Wear.

From his several professional trips, Gaspard keeps the influence of ” the energy, not the folks” :

- There is a dialogue. I really like American culture. The US recycle a lot, the vintage culture. Meeting up with the Crazy Horse in Las Vegas, we had a day stop in Detroit, where we found a great vintage shop and discovered the exhibition of Anthony McCall.

And when the so Parisian Gaspard is his home town, Paris:

- I live Rive Gauche (the left riverside of the river, La Seine) and I work Rive Droite (the right riverside of La Seine).

I leave the show room thinking of this sentence of Gaspard:

- I love fashion, it’s suggestions, like a dialogue.

So Gaspard, thank you for this lovely dialogue!

Paris, dans les dix heures et quelques douces grisailles, j’aime pas tous les matins du monde. Le Marais semi désert s’éveille lentement, comme le rituel d’une vieille dame digne excentrique et rangée. L’on y fait des rencontres, besoin de me mettre en marche. L’Ipod guerrier, un vieux Blondie « Atomic » western, suis accro.

Impression de blancheur écaillée jusqu’au ciel blanc étouffé, le genre de luminosité vide, cour pavée ondulante, murs ni droits ni rectilignes, d’un décor expressionniste allemand où les perspectives se défilent dans tous les sens. Petite porte en bois brut, large escalier, le vernis noir et épais qui tranche avec de petites lettres blanches, j’y suis je sonne : Gaspard Yurkievich.

Show room blanc dépouillé un néon message devant un néon éclairage, ambiance studieuse dans la pièce voisine où s’affaire l’état major. Quelques snapshots, géométrie de couleurs sur chaussettes noires, des portants, la collection homme présentée la semaine précédente. De l’ensemble émane une idée de rigueur ponctuée d’une fantaisie maîtrisée. Gaspard, simple, arrive avec Virginie, son attachée de presse, on s’assoie. 

- Berçot, c’est un peu comme une psychothérapie, un peu comme l’Actor Studio. 

Des études au Studio Berçot, une expérience chez Colonna et avant le tremplin du festival de Hyères, l’« étape » d’assistant défilés au bureau de presse d’Isabelle Roch : 

- J’avais besoin de me désinhiber. 

Sourire et d’ajouter l’œil espiègle:

- Enfant, j’avais un monde intérieur très développé, je ne m’ennuyais jamais, je dessinais. J’adorai chanter et danser, la musique. Flash total sur Diana Ross, il y a deux ans. On adore la danse, le corps. Une idée unique du corps, ça c’est flippant. J’habille mes amis qui pratiquent nos vêtements. On est hyper critique vis-à-vis de nous-même. 

Pas pu m’empêcher de lui dire combien j’aimais depuis les débuts ses chaussures : 

- Merci. La chaussure pour moi, c’est hyper facile.  

Tandis que ses mains pianotent parmi les quelques paires de la prochaine collection Femme (une exclu spéciale pour vous!), Gaspard décrit son approche de la mode « à la fois super parisienne et assez contemporaine »  : 

- On y est allé naïf et complètement libre. Imposer un langage, une identité. Créer un sens entre l’esprit et le corps : redéfinir le cliché de la mode, un lien entre l’establishment et le traditionnel. Notre marque tient sur une philosophie : le vêtement est le compagnon du jour. L’approche est de plus en plus élaborée. C’est sexy mais c’est un vrai vêtement. La première collection Homme est née des fondations de la collection Femme. Mais toutes les collections existent par elles-mêmes.

De façon naturelle, depuis l’enfance, Gaspard conjugue l’Art Contemporain avec plaisir, d’où ses collaborations avec différents artistes, dont Edouard Levé et l’architecte Didier Faustino pour certains de ses shows : 

- C’est un peu la récrée, je suis comme un directeur artistique sur un défilé : un casting de visions, comme des clés données aux gens. On vit un moment très très fort. Je fonctionne complètement à l’affect. 

Je pense à ce fameux dessert pour le « mythique » Café de La Paix : 

- On adore la nourriture, l’idée de générosité. On voulait que ce soit sexy et gourmand : avec une fève dans un écrin. Au début, j’avais imaginé un gâteau forêt noir puissant, écrasé par une chaussure pour une expo organisée par un magazine japonais. C’est drôle! 

Ai changé de place, besoin d’angles différents, du fameux « mécanisme créatif » dont me parle Gaspard de plus en plus prolixe. Pour la prochaine collection Femme, il s’est inspiré d’un livre introuvable en France, Pierre Berger et Karl Lagerfeld s’opposeraient à sa sortie : « Beautiful Fall » d’Alicia Drake. J’aime le principe de l’interdit !

- L’histoire d’Yves Saint Laurent, Lagerfeld, Antonio Lopez. Les années 70 : comment les gens s’habillaient, c’est pas du tout intéressant. C’est plus l’esprit couture, les égéries, Loulou de La Falaise : prendre leur énergie, le phantasme de cette époque. La transmission entre la couture et le prêt-à-porter.

De ses nombreux voyages pour le travail, Gaspard retient « l’influence d’énergie, pas le folklorique » :

- Il y a un dialogue. J’aime beaucoup la culture américaine. Les Etats-Unis recyclent beaucoup, le vintage. En rejoignant le Crazy Horse à Las Vegas, on a dû passer une journée à Detroit, où on a trouvé une excellente boutique vintage et découvert l’expo d’Anthony McCall. 

Et lorsque Gaspard, l’ultra parisien est à Paris : 

- Je vis Rive Gauche et je travaille Rive Droite.

Je quitte le show room, avec cette phrase de Gaspard en tête: 

- J’adore la mode, ce sont des propositions, c’est comme un dialogue. 

Alors Gaspard merci pour ce joli dialogue!
