Several of our members are working or studying at Sussex university, where management recently announced massive cuts inclusing 115 redundancies. Below is the text of a leaflet we wrote, targeted at fellow education workers.

Our Jobs under threat

Defending Ourselves Against Cuts

Across the country, education is under attack. In the past month, job losses have been announced in many places, including 200 at the University of Cumbria, 130 in Manchester MMU, £35m cuts at Leeds university, and of course 116 redundancies at Sussex. Politicians from all parties are united in wanting to make ordinary people pay the costs of capitalism in crisis, and they are starting with higher education.

But not only are cuts being made to universities, the very nature of such institutions is being remodelled. The governement are using the economic crisis to press ahead with the marketisation of higher education – which means a view of students as ‘clients’ and teaching staff as ’service providers’, increasing privatisation of services, an infringement on academic freedom, and the rise of managerialism. In this way universities become businesses to be run competitively in opposition to the values which universities are meant to embody.

To implement these destructive policies, the government relies on university senior management. Careerist to the core, these bureaucrats know their job is to impose cuts that will make us work longer hours for less money ; to overcome resistance from students and workers ; and to explain these harmful changes as beneficial and inevitable. Since few people are prepared to do this dirty work, they are paid 6-figure salaries, and advance in their careers if they succeed.

If senior management had the interest of Sussex University at heart, they would fight government policies and oppose the budget cuts. Instead they are undertaking to destroy Sussex as we know it. Michael Farthing and his colleagues have little attachment to this university. They have been here for less than 2 years, sitting in Sussex House, fiddling the numbers, spin-doctoring their proposals and inflating their emoluments and self-importance. To these bureaucrats, we are mere human resources and students are just a numerical measure of income streams. It is therefore not surprising that their hold on the realities of teaching and research is tenuous, and that they are ignorant of the fact that their plans will destroy the very basis of what makes Sussex such a great university.

We education workers can see that the proposed plans will be a disaster, because we know exactly how this university functions: we are the ones who do the teaching, the student support, the cleaning, the admin, the research, the catering, the technical support , the child care – we do everything that is needed to keep this university going. So as education workers we understand that it is impossible to increase student intake while simultaneously sacking those academics who do the teaching, sacking the support staff who maintain the running of the institution and destroying student advice and child care. Senior management can’t understand that we do our jobs well because we care about the people we work with and because we take pride in what we do. This motivation is undermined when many of us now have to worry about losing our jobs and those who remain will have to work that much harder to make up for it.

Yet as education workers we run this university day in day out, and this is what gives us power – we are the university. There is no way uni bosses can impose these cuts on us against our will. VCEG know this and they are scared to death that we get organised. Their childish attempt to stop an anti-cuts meeting last week shows this clearly. Of course they’d like us to take part in their sham consultation or put our faith in representative bodies like Senate – as the VC demonstrated last week these are entirely toothless and designed to waste our time and energy. Instead, education workers and students need to stick together, and work together across departments, union branches, pay scales and other divisions. The mass meeting on Thursday 10th December must become the start of education workers and students organising together against the VCEG’s cuts. We need to show the reality of the situation: they need us, but we don’t need them.

Some of us may hope that all this might just go away, or that someone else may lose their job. Make no mistake: we will all be affected, those who get to keep their job will have to work harder, under worse conditions, without affordable childcare facilities. This will be the first battle in a long war on ordinary people’s livelihoods, so let’s stand up for ourselves and fight these cuts. Though nobody can tell if we will win, the simple fact is that the stronger our resistance now, the more restrained their attacks will be in future .

What can we do to defend ourselves?

Talk to your colleagues and other workers. Find out how the cuts will affect them and if there’s anything that can be done about it.

Share information with others about how the cuts are affecting you and your workmates e.g. by posting anonymously on the blog or by emailing the Sussex Stop the Cuts account

Join the union and tell them what you want the union to do. Push for co-operation between the union branches on campus, as well as between staff and students.

Push for and get involved in a cross-campus campaign uniting staff and students so that collective decisions and actions can be undertaken by those affected by the cuts.

Find out what’s happening at other universities and organise in solidarity with all education workers – this is an attack on education workers nationally.

Stand up for yourself, your workmates and students; demand decent working conditions; and don’t put your faith in bureaucrats be that the VC and other senior management, Senate or Council. We should make the decisions that affect our lives ourselves.

We’re strongest when we use collective direct action – this can take the form of work-to-rule; go-slows; walk-outs; or strikes.

Recently I have seen few times the TV advertisement of “The Policing Pledge“, a £1.9m national advertising campaign explaining what should be expected of police in England and Wales. Launched on November 21, the Home Office’s campaign involves adverts on television, radio, magazines and internet throughout November and December, as well as leaflets distributed to 6 million homes.

According to the Policing Pledge, neighbourhood officers should spend 80% of their time on duty in the community and members of the public reporting a non-emergency problems will be seen within 48 hours. In December, the Home Office also introduce “Name and Shame” plan, which encourage police forces and councils to use websites to name key local convicted criminals.

What urges the Home Office to put up the Policing Pledge is the criticism against the police that failed to investigate around 1.7 million out of 5.2 million reported crimes last year, including sex attacks, robberies, fraud, violent crimes and drug offences, as well as large numbers of burglaries and thefts – around one-third of all offences were dismissed as unsolvable within hours by “screening out”. The highest rate of screening out was by the Metropolitan Police, with only 48% of reported offences dealt with in 2008/9. In parts of the country, an average of around 75% of theft are screened out, as well as around 70% for criminal damage, 55% for burglary, 44% for fraud and forgery, 20% for robbery, 15% for violent offences, 2% for sexual attacks, and less than 1% for drug offences. We experienced petit crimes like M’s bicycle stolen or his Vespa’s number plate cloned, but I guess that nothing have been done for it. But criminals are the sole winner with this ”screening out” system, and this could endanger the security of the community and possibly encourage more crimes to happen. Hope this campaign will work to regain the public’s confidence and trust in police force, and contribute to reduce the crime rate.

The design used for the Policing Pledge is originally from “Keep Calm and Carry On“, the World War II motivational poster produced by the government in 1939 but never used. It was rediscovered in 2000 and has been re-issued by a number of companies, and used in a range of products such as T-shirts, mugs, bags, posters, tea towels and so on. I like this simple but strong design, and we have two posters ourselves. M gets panic easily and when that happens, it is useful for me to remind him what he should do, by just pointing out the poster!

Here is something I received last Saturday morning, what I termed as ‘Door Spam’, leaflets/flyers stuck on the front door grille. It is a leaflet for a condominium development. Which one? I really can’t say. This is the second time I have received this leaflet. I cringed both times.

Observe for a moment. What is wrong with this leaflet?

Absolutely Zero Product Branding

Somehow, the creator of this leaflet had failed to provide a name for the condominium. Apart from a spot of personal branding for a ‘Mabel Ang’ and ‘artist’s impressions’ images, no other product branding element is visible on this leaflet. Perhaps they had deemed revealing the condominium’s name as none-too-important, or keeping it a mystery will entice prospects to put in a call. Wrong move I say.

Or perhaps the condo was so badly named, they decided not to use it after reading the article on the importance of naming condos and its significance.

Cryptic Copywriting

What exactly is the inspiration behind ‘cryptic’ and ‘ambiguous’ copywriting? There is a neglect to inform prospective clients of the condominium’s actual address but instead, ‘Minutes to Somerset MRT/Orchard/CBD/IR’ and ‘Prime District 9’ are used. Come on! That can be anywhere on the southern part of this island.

Is it a top-secret, top-end location that is only to be revealed once you are funneled through the sales pipeline? To see if you fit the bill of a likely buyer persona first, someone who is flushed with cash to spare? But why then did this leaflet appear on my HDB door in Toa Payoh!? I see that as a failure in market research and a waste of money and paper it is printed on.

Does the whole thing sounds fishy?

You bet. The credibility factor is non-present in this effort. For a $800k product, this leaflet certainly did not help in providing consumer confidence to anyone that came upon this. I find it intriguing that, if this leaflet really does indeed belongs to the ‘Developer’s Sales Team’, why the secrecy and ambiguousness behind the effort?

Perhaps someone from the real estate industry, or close to it, can provide an explanation for this? I’d love to get to the bottom of this! Leave your comments below!

Bonus section for the marketer in you!

Using Direct Marketing Mailers to Win Online

Direct marketing via mails (physical or electronic) may not be the best form of marketing (it is interruptive after all). But heck, since this method is being regularly employed and money is going to be spent, might as well use the opportunity to provide content or more information to the prospective customer, right?

So how to do this on limited real estate on a piece of flyer?

By bringing them online to your website through a printed URL. As long as there is compelling content and relevant information provided on your website, you can be sure your prospects will be happy to devote time and attention to your efforts. It is also an excellent opportunity to build a database of customers who are willing to listen to you on a regular basis. With the permission you have received, you are now ready to start a direct mail campaign online. I am sure that is more cost effective than printed materials and manpower cost for ‘door or letterbox spamming’.

Provide your social media information to direct your prospects to connect with you. This is your Facebook or Twitter pages. The fastest way to connect with you.

See? Your investment in a leaflet has possibly doubled or tripled! Perhaps Mabel Ang might want to take a leaf out of this

We quickly agreed that we didn’t want to get into an argument, so I proceeded with caution.

Its always challenging to meet couple’s like this, and its usually the husband who is the unbeliever.

He made clear that he wasn’t anti Christianity, that he had no objections to his wife’s beliefs, but simply didn’t believe.

John’s gospel is clear concerning the tragic difference between believers and unbelievers, even if married!

John chapter 3 and verse 36 says: “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

One enjoys a life which has been given by God and will go on forever, the other a life which will soon run out and suffer the indignation of God against their unbelief!

Few people realise the offensive nature of unbelief. God made all of us, provides a beautiful world for our enjoyment, sent His Son to break the power of sin, raised Him from the dead to establish His triumph over the grave, and yet many people audaciously thumb their nose at Him.

Men are easily offended and soon show their displeasure, just cut in front of another car and you’ll soon feel the heat of ‘road rage’. So foolish when you remember there are no perfect drivers.

God’s ‘wrath’ is the expression of a perfect being’s displeasure at imperfect man’s arrogant unbelief.

The sin of taking all the Creator has provided and misusing it, of knowing that Jesus Christ died to save and choosing to drown.

Hebrews chapter 2 and verse 3 says: how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him?

1John chapter 5 and verse 10 says: He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.

Those who ‘will not believe’ will find themselves in the most aweful predicament, shut up to suffer God’s wrath, forever!

As you might imagine, our conversation took on a serious turn for I soon demonstrated that his unbelief is a choice of the will, not a lack of information.

Tragically, man’s unbelief is the clearest evidence that he is a rebel at heart, not simply uninformed.

The Good News is that God has diagnosed man’s condition and personally provided the remedy.

His own dear Son has suffered the wrath of God on the cross at Calvary that all who believe might never experience the wrath of God, surely you must abandon your unbelief and cast yourself upon His mercy. TODAY.

The first lady to stop said she believed in God and Jesus but was interested in other religions also, especially Buddhism.

While this may seem attractive on the surface, any study of the many, so called gods, quickly reveals their total incompatibility.

In Buddhism there is no actual Supreme Being, no personal God, its actually a very ancient form of Atheism.

Life is about escaping suffering through spiritual disciplines!

The Christian Faith revolves around the existence of a self existing, personal God.

One who is pleased to reveal Himself in time, ultimately assuming real human flesh and suffering on behalf of His people.

Exodus chapter 3 verse 14: And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Matthew chapter 1 and verse 23: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Mark chapter 10 and verse 45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

There is no common ground between Christianity and Buddhism. Like all man made religion Buddhism is at best a self improvement programme and ultimately futile! The Good News Christianity brings is that of the Saviour God who does for us what we could never accomplish by our own efforts.

Acts chapter 4 and verse 12 is very clear:

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Nick was able to explain to this dear lady that sin prevents us enjoying God’s presence here or hereafter. That if we are ever to know God and enjoy any assurance of His favour then one must be found who can remove our sin, cancel the record of our madness. That One Is Jesus Christ, and no one else, certainly not you or I with our imperfect ‘good works’.

Romans Chapter 6 and verse 23: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If you have been labouring under the delusion that all religions are equal, perhaps even ‘drawn’ to Buddhism, then you also need to be directed to the Son of God who willingly gave His life for the sins of His people, the one and only way to God.

John chapter 14 and verse 6 is quite clear: I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Please contact us at: ryedaleevangelicalchurch@yahoo.co.uk if you need more information or help.

Yesterday morning at University we were given a project with a hand in time of 5pm that evening and this was my outcome. We were given the task of using an A3 page and considering folds had to create a layout that would incorporate; a title, 5 words to describe the title and one paragraph on the title. We were not allowed to use images, just text and we were only allowed to use one typeface. Our main project in this module is a publication, in which we are split into three and put into 17 groups, each tasked with interviewing either a designer, an illustrator, or a photographer. My group received the amazing opportunity of interviewing the incredibly talented and innovative designer Richard Seabrooke (of Dynamo and The Small Print), and so to make the design appropriate I decided to create a piece on Richard Seabrooke. I used Futura Condensed as my typeface as it was one of the fonts he likes. I also decided on cutting down my A3 page to a square (29.7×29.7), and created a double sided print using a fancy fold, just add a quirky edge and grab interest of anyone whom may choose to open it up to see more. I wanted a fold that would excite viewers, a fold that they wouldn’t suspect at first glance or touch. I chose brown, pink and white as my colour palette as I wanted quite a muted palette so that it all works softly together and that no part of the design is fighting to be seen. Let me know what you think about the design!

How is looks when you first open it and discover the fold, I designed it so that ‘Richard’ ran along the fold.

Its just like a hinge then, you pull one edge and it all opens out flat.

The text wraps around the centre.
