They are beginning to pull up and I thought they’d be motivated to pull up so they can play on this toy. Unfortunately, the legs are really light weight and cheap and it tips over really easily.

In addition, I think there’s so much going on that they can’t possibly learn from it. There must be 10 different buttons/levers/etc and they all result in a different sound. Our boys are hitting another button before the first sound is even done. Plus, the automated voice is really hard to understand.

Our boys enjoy it, but I’m really unimpressed. I was trying to decide between this and a heavy, wooden toy and wish I would have gotten the other one.

I think it’s great. My son is 8 months old and he loved it immediately. We have yet to put it down on the floor without the legs because he likes cruising. The table is sturdy and has so much for little ones to do.

As a parent, I also appreciate the sounds and sounds vary. It’s not grating on your nerves. I hope my son grows with this.

BTW – one of my nephews has the Fisher Price version of this. We recently got togther and my son had more interest in the Fisher Price one, but that could have been because it was new to him.

He’s only 4, but he is still a little behind the curve. When we first got it, he was excited and we practiced his letters. Then he started to use it like it was a Magna Doodle and didn’t bother trying to use the letters. If I do try to get him to do the letters he gets bored really easily and runs away from me.

I was slightly disappointed at the actual part where you practice writing. I thought that the pen was somewhat electrical and would tell your kid if he was doing it correctly, but it’s just a screen that sticks to the bottom and you wipe it away (like a magna doodle) when you are done. It is visible, but seems rather cheesy.

I still like this, and will continue to try to get my son to practice more.

However, I am glad I decided to shop around before purchasing through Amazon. The Amazon price is $42 for the Scribble and Write. It is $16.99 on the Leapfrog site and $19.99 on Walmart.com and in their stores. The Text and Learn is also significantly lower at both sites than on Amazon. Why are Amazon’s prices so high? I am very disappointed because I love shopping on Amazon.

Cole (Charleston SC)
I originally bought this for my 2 year old daughter. She is not quite ready for it. However my 4.5 and almost 6 year old started to play with it and LOVE it. In fact I bought two more for them.

It actually teaches the child how to hold the pen correctly. It also teaches the child both the proper way to write both uppercase and lower case letters. For the younger children it teaches how to draw simple and more complex shapes. I like that it is small and portable, perfect travel. It is not loud or obnoxious. The scribble and write also teaches letter recognition. My son would want the other kids to know that it glows in the dark.

I had my son bring the Scribble and Write to his Kindergarten class. The teacher as SO impressed by it,she said she was going to buy the class one as well.

Every time I go to the store and see the Scribble and Write, I recommend it to the other parents in the store. HIGHLY recommended. Good job Leap Frog again!!!

“Gets played with EVERY day!” 2009-11-24
By Amy Gardiner (Honolulu, HI)
My daughter got this for her 2nd birthday two months ago and I don’t think a day has gone by that she hasn’t drug it out of the closet and played with it. She calls it her “learning computer”, and will sit down for probably 20 minutes at a stretch (a long time for a 2-year-old) playing by herself, or longer if I join.

Although she still is too young to have great pen control, she watches intently as the the flashing dots form the letters of the alphabet, upper and lower! She has known her letters for some time now and particularly likes the game of guessing the letter as it’s drawn – a great game feature. I can see this entertaining her for at least 2 more years.

My only complaint is that the “eraser” feels a little flimsy and the imprint from what you draw on the screen is a little on the faint side. Overall, EXCELLENT product and I would recommend this for any toddler. Oh, and it’s small enough to fit in a purse or diaper bag…a great entertainer at restaurants!

“So far, the Leapster Original seems better” 2009-12-02
By Chris (Florida)
My daughter loves her original leapster, but it’s getting rather aged and often turns itself off without warning.

So we get the leapter 2, thinking it will be an upgrade from what we had.

First experience, opening it. Difficult to get out of packaging, gets small scratch from it’s own plastic packaging during fight to get it out.

Second experience, won’t accept my daughter’s name as a user name. Not a difficult name mind you: Gina. Half hour spent trying to get it to work while she eagerly waits to play it. Another half hour on hold with customer service (by now, she’s on to other things), finally find out that the leapster 2’s ‘bad word’ filter is tripped by the name ‘Gina’ and it can’t be entered. Get around it by putting a space between each letter. Customer service says sorry, but they can’t allow kids to put bad words into their games. Gina is a bad word? Besides, let the parents do the parenting.

Third experience, daughter puts in her favorite cartridge, PetPals. She has three puppy names on it, all with points she has gained from the playing she has done on the original Leapster. Leapter 2 boots up to the game, and says ‘you have to delete a name to enter a new one’. She doesn’t want to enter a new name, she just wants to play with the ones that are already there. Game won’t let her do that. Just gets stuck on the ‘you have to delete a name to enter a new one’, even though we aren’t trying to enter a new one.

This time I email customer service. Four days later, they reply to ask ‘if’ it will work if I delete one. Well, we don’t want to delete one, and shouldn’t they ‘know’ if it will work, or what’s wrong, or what I should do to fix it?

So… the Leapster 2 sits on my desk, unused. My daughter has returned to using the old original one that turns off without warning. Shouldn’t this have all been easy to do, enter her name, enter her cartridge, and play? Will likely return this one.

“REALLY Disappointing” 2009-11-30
By Nikonian (Massachusetts, USA)
This item is a major disappointment. It is touted as an educational game for preschoolers through age 8, but neither of my kids (the preschooler and the first grader) are getting much out of this device. The display quality is quite poor, making playing these games difficult at best just because of the inability to clearly see the graphics. The graphics are very bitmappy and jaggy, and the brightness is never right. No matter how I adjust it, it is either too dark or too bright. There’s just no happy medium. It also has to be angled at precisely the correct angle, or nobody can see the screen. This makes helping the preschooler with the games nearly impossible.

I was immediately disappointed with the opening announcement when I powered up the unit. If I had known that this game has been known to cause seizures in “sensitive individuals” I never would have opened the box. We also have to see this announcement every time the unit is powered up. Then we got another announcement….you MUST go online and download games to be able to use it without a costly additional cartridge. The website isn’t exactly intuitive. It took me awhile to figure out where I was supposed to go to get these games (pardon me, the ONE game that you are allowed), and I’m no slouch on the net.

The software that comes with the untit on CD installs on my PC, but won’t connect to the internet. It also won’t recognize the Leapster when it is plugged in to the PC. Luckily, it runs on my Mac without issue, but I had to bang my head against the wall with a crazy preschooler crying and begging to get his toy back before I tried it on the Mac.

This part just irks me…you have to pay additional money for a protective case. We’ve paid a small fortune for this thing already. Shouldn’t it COME with a case?? Maybe even one that holds the cartridges?

This is splitting hairs, but at this point I’m pretty fed up–the string on the stylus is too short to get the stupid thing out of the stylus pocket. Who decided on the design for this one? Whomever it is needs to be fired. If you can’t figure out how much string it needs to reach from point A to point B, you really need to be finding another job.

I would NOT recommend this toy to anybody. We’re all frustrated and ready to send it back.

“Leapster 2 review – not too durable” 2009-11-17
By T. McLaughlin (California)
My son has used his leapster for about 1 year now. It started freezing up 2-3 months after we bought it. This wasn’t happening too much, as we would just restart it and it would work fine. I should have sent it in to get it replaces but I didn’t. We are having problems with it right now as it restarts with cartridge games for some reason. I have submitted a question to leapfrog and am awaiting an answer. I suspect we need to buy him another unit.

My 4 year old son loves it and plays the games all the time in the car and at home. It keeps him busy in the car on long trips too, or if we are in a restaurant and he gets bored. The cartridge games are a bit expensive but it gives the unit some flexibility from the rather boring built in games it comes with. The games are easy to lose as well for young children, as we have lost one of the cartridge games that we bought. I would definitely suggest buying the AC unit to plug this in when you can as it goes through batteries VERY quickly. Besides the games being expensive I would suggest this unit very much. I am not sure if my problems of freezing and restarting are a normal complaint with this unit or not, but with the education and enjoyment my son gets out of playing it I will be fixing it or buying another one for him.

Just after New Year’s, the biggest digital media conference of them all, CES, descends on the Las Vegas Strip. 110,000 are expected, 2500 exhibitors, 250 conference sessions, 800 speakers. The show floors run from Th 1/7- Su 1/10 but the action really gets started on Tu 1/5 with CES Unveiled and W 1/6 Press Day. Press outreach has been tremendous with the winner of the most inventive lure thus far going to Shuttle (PC) who mailed mysterious hard copy invites to their press event via this cinematic ARG-styled website. Needless to say it’s our first time covering CES, and we are very excited. In prep for CES, Digital Living Room will be celebrating connected devices at Sun Microsystems, Santa Clara next week with related Tech Supper Clubs in LA, SF, SV. On the content side, HRTS is lunching with the showrunners of Modern Family, Glee, Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother and Rescue Me at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. If you can’t make it live, try catching the stream. We really enjoyed covering their last one, Digital Chiefs. Below are the guides. Wishing you happy holidays!

Leap Frog’s Zippity is a cool interactive system that is designed to get kids up off the couch

Leap Frog’s Zippity is a cool interactive system that is designed to get kids up off the couch and learning, while they play.

All of the games included on this system are of shows my son loves. Everything is here, Little Einsteins, Disney Playhouse, Handy Manny and Winnie the Pooh. Each show comes with 2 games and some with different levels.

Getting started is easy, just plug the game directly into your television, change the input location and you’re ready to go.

LeapFrog’s graphics for this game are pretty impressive. We have a fairly large TV and there is no distortion or pixelation. In fact, once on, the Zippity could almost be mistaken for an interactive DVD.

Zippity’s mat features 4 colors: yellow(home position), red, blue and green, which doubles as the ‘enter’ button. When playing the game, kids are asked to use the colors to do tasks with the characters on the screen. For example, when you dance with June(Little Einsteins) she will ask you to go to blue, green or red and after you do that correctly, she will dance where you want her to. Most of the games also work on this premise. The first half is a follow along and then they get to control what happens. Also attached to the mat is the bopper, an oversized joystick that allows movement backward, forward, and side to side. My son loves this it and tries to use it even when it’s not required.

The Zippity has been a hit at our house. It did take a bit to teach my oldest that he needed to go back to the home spot(yellow) between each task, but now that he has caught on he can navigate through the whole system by his self.

I would recommend this to game to any parent looking a gift that is both interactive and engaging. Out of the box, the Zippity comes pre-loaded with enough games to keep a little one going for a couple hours. If a change of pace is needed, parents can also purchase other games such as Cars, Disney Princess, and Princess and the Frog.

LeapFrog recommends the Zippity for kids aged 3-6 and we agree. Some 3-year-olds may need a bit of extra guidance, but older kids will catch on right away.

Leapfrog has done it again! Just in time for the 2009 holiday season, they’ve introduced two

Leapfrog has done it again! Just in time for the 2009 holiday season, they’ve introduced two must-haves for the kid into reading, audio books, or just plain do-it-yourselfing.

The new Leapfrog Tag Reader has 32 MB of storage — twice as much as the old reader – which allows it to hold up to ten full-length books, or even more of the delicious new phonics readers. It still has all of the great features that it had before, including the ability to read a page at a time, a word at a time, and and to uncover new sound effects and dialogue hidden in the illustrations.

And now it comes in purple. I mention that because that was a key selling point for my little ones, shopping for their cousin who is absolutely crazy about the color purple. I didn’t find a pink one, but there is a special edition Disney Princess (Ariel) reader out there for those of you with little princesses. [My boys are fine with just plain green.]

Tag books have always come in classic [Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Green Eggs and Ham, Olivia] and Disney [Spiderman, Dora, Diego, Kai-lan] type books, but now there are more than ever before. 30 full-length books, to be exact, all with special features in the illustrations that range from sound effects to dialogue that complement the understanding of the text. Leapfrog has also introduced the new

Phonics readers, each of which introduce a new sound or two, with multiple-letter sounds highlighted so they are read as a unit. The phonics books also allow the child to click on a special symbol and then touch a word to hear it spelled. I didn’t think this would be a big deal for my just-five year old, but within minutes of unpacking the box, he was in his room, reading the book, and spelling out loud, “P-I-G, pig.”

So yeah, they work. I’m not saying they’re teaching him to read — that’s my job — but these books do serve an important purpose in the path toward learning to read. The Tag Reader helps my child explore books in a way that goes beyond puzzling out the pictures at this almost-reading age, and helps him slow down and think about the parts of the pictures, the parts of words, and how the pictures complement the story told in the text.

They’re also fantastic for car rides.

The one caution that I would share with you about these activity books is that they are just that — activity books — and that they do not replace reading with your child, reading to your child, or teaching him a single thing. But they’re a wonderful tv-replacement, or dvd-replacement on those long car rides across the country. We’ve had ours for a year and a half, and the kids are still jazzed about them.

Edited to add: Leapfrog’s Cyber Monday specials are now good until Thursday: Free shipping and up to 75% off books, readers, and gift packs.

Disclosure: Leapfrog sent me a new Tag reader and two sets of phonics books for review. I was not paid for this post or even asked to blog about it. [I was so impressed with the new reader that I bought two for my little nieces, and books to go with them, on sale at Target. Shhh. Don't tell my nieces before Christmas.]

To sum up my first month’s work on helium will be exciting because I will get to look through

To sum up my first month’s work on helium will be exciting because I will get to look through the first things I’ve written on helium.com and see my growth and progress through a critical lens and then share it with you!

Please enjoy!!

Always and forever

Based on three separate poems, I’ve created this poem which is basically what I consider to be an engagement, newlywed or recommitment poem about marriage, being together and loving each other always and forever and the prospects of this new way of life. Helium has rated it 2/37.

How motherhood changes a woman

A friend of mine laughed at the fact that when I started on helium, most of the articles I had written were in their Parenting & Pregnancy channel, even though I am not a mother. I just wrote to titles that stuck out to me when I joined helium and this was one of them. I found that this was a title that was part of a writing contest helium was writing and it placed me at #14 in the list of publishers who wrote for the selected titles of the contest in the topic of Parenting & Pregnancy. I don’t quite recall how I first even found the title but I want to say that through rating, I came across many titles that stuck out to me, which I then would look up in order to write for.

This article has been 1/51 but the ratings went down and I could not understand why but when I was honest with myself, I knew that the couple of typos I’d corrected weren’t the only thing wrong. I realized my article was missing key information when it comes to physical and when it comes to professional, occupational and career changes that motherhood has on a woman. So, I “leapfrogged” the article (revising, adding to and editing an article and submitting it to be rated by the helium community as compared to your original article for the approval to, ultimately, leap over and literally replace the former article), which actually resulted in it going from two pages in length to four but all I knew was that I was making sure I put what I needed to say there in order to reflect my real take on the title. Needless to say, it reclaimed its rightful place in rating!

Should teachers have a right to deny a students need to use the bathroom?

Now, I came across this title and saw that it was a debate title, meaning you can come on the page and vote yes or no and can write an article relaying your argument for your side and your stance. A writer who wrote for the “No” side had a post on her blog/helium zone with a link to vote to “protect” children in public schools. Even though I actually loved her article [even added her to my favorite helium writers list on my profile] as well as her heart, I wrote for the “Yes” side. After writing, I learned that the channel category was for Secondary Education so I leapfrogged this article as well in order to ensure it reflected high school students and high school life at a more in depth capacity than it had previously. The article is rated 1/2 for the No side. In case you’d like to know and would find it to be valuable information, there are currently 4 articles on the yes side as compared to the 2 on the no side.

The impact of father-mother relationship on children’s well-being

This is something I’ve felt extremely strongly about and am glad to have gotten off of my chest exactly what and how I feel about it. Now, others can see and learn from it and they obviously appreciate since it is rated 3/14.

Is there too much sex on television?

I definitely had no choice but to write to this title. Everyone who I know who has read the article I wrote has thoroughy enjoyed it and thought it to be accurate and insightful as well as humorous and very debate-worthy. It is fact-driven and shares personal accounts as well as it challenges and raises questions. Enough of that, though, because what I want to say to you is that it shouldn’t be a question and I think that whoever wrote for or even just believes in the No side should “go spank themselves,” as someone I know says from time to time. Needless to say, I wrote for the Yes side and all I can say now is to just, please, read it yourself. Formulate an opinion if you have not yet done so. Lastly, fight for what you believe in because change does start with one man…every one man makes things how they are and every individual man is needed for things to change, so why not just go ahead and start with you?!

This article was numer 1/54 and was leapfrogged after a while because new information arose. It still sits at the top!

So, there we have it — a poem, two debates and two parenting articles and that sums up the best of eDITORcHRIS/Christina Bernice’s helium.com writings from October 2009.

In September we had the chance to review the new Leapfrog Tag Junior reading system, designed to encourage the love of books with kids 2 to 4. My two-year old enjoyed using the Tag Junior during her review; she still does. After that review I had a number of people ask me how the original Tag Reading System compares to the Tag Junior. So the wonderful people at Leapfrog Canada’s public relations company sent along a Tag and the book Fly High, Fly Guy for a comparison.

Ready, Set, Read

When the Leapfrog Tag arrived my son was ecstatic. He has been using his younger sister’s Tag Junior but the reading material isn’t very challenging for a boy who is at the early reading stage. The Tag Reading System comes with the book Ozzie and Mack. The audio is preloaded on the Tag pen so my son could start using it right away, which of course he did.

Works with Tag Junior Books too

We discovered you can also use the Tag pen to read the Tag Junior books. This is great news if you already have a Tag Junior for either a younger child or your child is transitioning up to the Tag. You will need to download the audio from the Tag Junior books onto the pen. (On the audio download page, look for the Tag Junior picture on the bottom of the page). Keep in mind that the Tag will read the Tag Junior books the same way the Tag Junior reads them, as a whole page, not word by word. The Tag Junior however cannot read the Tag books.

Beyond Reading

The Leapfrog Tag Reading System can be used as a reading tool in a few different ways: you can have the whole story read to you with audio prompts to turn the pages as you follow along, you can have the story read page-by-page at your child’s pace, or your child can read and use the pen to help with the tricky words. The Tag can read each individual word that you point to.

But the Leapfrog Tag Reading System offers great learning and fun beyond just reading the story or having it read to you. Kids can use the pen to explore the page; touch elements or people in the story to hear dialog or sounds beyond the story. My son loved finding these hidden gems. He felt more involved in the story, choosing what to discover. There are also games and quizzes in the story. Your child can choose to play along or not by selecting the appropriate icon at the bottom of the page.

My five-year old son loves using the Tag. He can easily spend an hour quietly reading, learning and enjoying one of the Tag stories:

You can store a number of books on the Tag pen so switching from story to story is easy; just touch the page of the new story and the Tag pen finds the right audio clip. The interactivity of the Tag keeps the stories from becoming too repetitive and boring. Now my son loves to read along with the story. The Tag also gives my son time to explore and learn on his own, without any mom, dad or big sister looking over his shoulder.

Leapfrog’s Learning Path: Discover What your Child is Learning

Like the Tag Junior, the Leapfrog Tag Reading System is enabled with the Leapfrog Learning Path system. By connecting the Tag pen to your computer with the supplied USB cable you can discover what your child is learning. The Learning Path will tell you what books your child uses and for how long, what areas they excel in and what areas they need more practice, plus you’ll find out where they sit skill wise compared to standard levels by grade. If you’ve never used the Learning Path program before, you will need to install the Leapfrog Connect software (CD provided).

Connecting online also enables you do download the audio for other Tag or Tag Junior books you own. Plus as your child completes sections of the book they will receive a reward, like a door hanger or maze you can printout. My son was always asking me to connect to the computer to discover what new reward he revealed. Using certain Tag books can also unlock online games for your kids to enjoy.

Fun, interactive learning

My son doesn’t have a long attention span, unless Lego is involved, but he could sit and listen, play, read and learn with the Leapfrog Tag Reading System for an hour or more. He loved interacting with the story and it’s helped him with word recognition in other stories.

Manufacturer: Leapfrog
Age: 4 to 8
MSRP ($Cdn): $59.99, includes reader, USB connection cable and one pre-loaded book
Additional Books ($Cdn): $14.97

LeapFrog has introduced something that is perfect for our little book worm – the Tag Jr. This

LeapFrog has introduced something that is perfect for our little book worm – the Tag Jr. This awesome book reader tells the story, makes the noises and reads each page in the order he wants them to. It gives him the power to go as fast or as slow as he would like, while listening to stories about some of his favorite friends(Dora, Backyardigans and Dr. Seuss).

Out of the box, the Tag Jr. is almost ready to go. LeapFrog includes a book(If I Were) to get you started and it is pre-loaded onto the reader. Just add batteries (2AAA) and your child is on their way.

Working on the same technology as LeapFrog’s original Tag reader, the Tag Jr. connects to your computer to download more books(up to 6 at a time). Once loaded the Tag Jr. is smart enough to know the difference between each book and can go from one to the other. The technology is genius and so convenient.

In order to make life easy for myself and to reduce my son’s anxiety level, I loaded on a bunch of books I planned to buy after I installed the software.

When they went on sale, I bought them and then they were ready to use as soon as I got them home.

As a bonus, the Tag Jr. allows parents to program their child’s name. Just like My Pal Scout, the reader greats your child by name when the Tag Jr. is powered on.

I am very fond of the LeapFrog’s Tag Jr., but not as fond as my son. He LOVES this thing and sits for hours going from one book to another. The fact that it just ‘knows’ to make the sound effects and say the right words makes him so happy. That’s why I don’t mind spending a bit more for the books because I know all of the extras that come with it.

I highly recommend the Jr. for kids that are between the ages of 2-4. It’s rounded shape makes it easy for little ones to hold and move around the pages.

The LeapFrog My Pal Violet is an interactive companion that helps children learn with an entertaining twist. Recommended for ages six months to three years, the cuddly Pal Violet’s music, lights, and singsong voice appeals to kids whether they are barely crawling or talking in complete sentences. As an added feature, you can personalize the toy to match your child’s preferences through the LeapFrog Connect application simply by connecting the My Pal Violet to a computer with the USB cable (included).

Soft Material with Bright Colors and Pleasing Voice
My Pal Violet, with its plush fabric and colorful puppy design, is appealing to children. The voice of Violet, a playful and upbeat young girl’s, is fun and engaging for growing minds. Infants are also attracted to the name tag that lights up when Violet speaks or plays music. The name tag is made of durable plastic, and the new model features paws with embroidered symbols instead of decals so there are no removable pieces on the toy’s exterior.

An ideal companion for a young child, My Pal Scott sings, talks, and can even learn your child’s name. View larger.

Your child can chew on this sturdy toy’s ears or toss it around. My Pal Violet is light enough for even the youngest child to hold and carry. The handy Velcro closure keeps the battery compartment, USB port, and power/volume switch securely inside the toy. The switch has three settings: normal volume, quiet volume, and master off. In the “master off” mode, Violet will not operate when the paws are pressed, so only parents will be able to turn the toy back on. My Pal Violet’s speakers are also inside the toy and provide balanced sound.

Advice for parents: when My Pal Violet starts to sound distorted, parents will need a screwdriver to open the battery compartment and change the 3 “AAA” batteries.

Using the doll’s USB port, you can personalize Scott to suit your child’s preferences. View larger.

Music, Words, and Lullabies
Each paw on My Pal Violet is embroidered with a different symbol that, when pressed, turns on a special feature. The right arm paw with a ball symbol provides snappy sentences designed to help your child learn different emotions, colors, and words. The left arm paw features music notes; when pressed you hear a 15-second, upbeat song. The songs rotate randomly and include seven vocal songs to teach skills and three fun instrumental tunes.

Younger infants will be attracted to the melodies, while older toddlers can sing along. The right foot has a stars/moon symbol for five different selections of soothing music for naps or bedtime. Press it once for two minutes of music, or press it twice for five minutes of songs. If your child wants a little extra time with My Pal Violet before falling asleep, you can press the paw three times to hear ten minutes of music.

Parents can use the songs that come pre-loaded on My Pal Violet or change the songs by connecting to the LeapFrog Connect application. It’s easy to turn off My Pal Violet by simply pressing the left foot’s on/off switch; push any of the other paws to resume play mode.

Personalize for Your Child
A special feature of My Pal Violet is the ability to customize your child’s experience. The instruction booklet will guide you through the easy process to connect My Pal Violet to a computer with the USB cord and download the LeapFrog Connect application. All it takes is 25 megabytes of free space on your computer and about 15 minutes to personalize the toy with your child’s preferences. You’ll be able to search for your child’s name among a database of thousands. When selected, My Pal Violet will use your child’s name in phrases such as “I love you” and incorporate his/her name into songs.

The application also allows you to choose your child’s favorite color, animal, and food to personalize Violet’s phrases to your child’s favorite things. There’s a resource section for printing activity sheets that your toddler will enjoy. Also, you can switch up the songs and lullabies so they’re constantly fresh and different. The database is updated regularly with new songs.

The only drawback: if your child has a very uncommon name, there’s a slim chance that it will not be in the LeapFrog database. However, you can choose one of many nicknames that you may call your child, such as “Munchkin” or “Peanut.”

What’s in the Box
One My Pal Violet toy, three “AAA” batteries, one USB cable, Quick Connect Guide and Parent Instructions booklet.

This electronic writing desk teaches kids the alphabet, letter sounds, letter formation, spelling, and word creation in a fun, interactive format. Kids can choose from six games: letters, a letters quiz, phonics, a phonics quiz, spelling, and “create-a-word.” In the letters game, children push a letter to hear its name and see how it is formed on the LCD screen; players can also write their own letters on the “magic” writing screen. In the spelling game, children learn to spell simple words. In the phonics game, children first hear a letter and then are given a short word as an example. Along the way, the always-helpful LeapFrog “coach” offers lots of cheerful hints so children won’t get stuck in any of the exercises. Additional features include an automatic shut-off, an oversize pullout handle, a variety of comical sounds for incorrect answers, and a two-position volume control.

Teacher Review

This laptop-sized desk emphasizes writing skills, but it is also an effective phonics tool. Children can learn letter recognition and identification tasks, phoneme identification and recognition tasks through an introduction to short vowel sounds embedded in three-letter words. Many electronic games have poor sound quality, making auditory letter discrimination difficult, but the sound in this system is crisp, clear, and full of repetition and inflection. The writing exercises are short, simple, and fun. The child composes the lines and circles that form letters using an appropriately sized plastic “pen,” which helps improve fine motor skills and builds self-confidence. The computerized writing style offered may not be the style taught in school, but it provides a foundation for future learning. Left-handed students may find the position of the cord-anchored pen cumbersome. This is one of the few hands-on phonics tools that includes both lowercase and uppercase letters in its repertoire. Identifying lowercase letters is an essential part of learning to read, as most text is printed with lowercase letters. –Kathryn Tracy.

I bought this game for my son (3 1/2yrs) at Christmas. He absolutely loves it, seeing it as a “grown up” game. The game is based on Sonic, who has to solve simple maths questions to ensure his captured friend is released. The first stages are ideal for this age group – letting them become familiar with numbers and numerical order. Although my son has lots of other Leapster games (Madagascar is also a favourite), this is certainly his favourite – i’m just amazed at how much he has learned already.

Both, My Pal Scout and the girl version, My Pal Violet are designed for kids six months and older. They can be connected to your computer via USB to allow parents to customize songs (fun and bedtime) that are played. Additionally, you can input your child’s name and favorite things including color, animal and food.

Before we even turned Scout on, he was a hit. My youngest loves to cuddle and carry him around the house even without the music going.

Once on, Scout interacts with your child by asking them a series of questions. He says stuff like,

“I have the hiccups. Let’s count to five and see if they go away.”

“Can you guess what I am? Meow! I am pretending to be a cat. Meow with me”

Hi child’s name! Wanna Play?

While my 10 month old can’t talk back, my four year old gladly answers Scout’s question for him.

After we programmed my youngest son’s name in, it was funny to see the surprised look on his face when the dog knew his name.

Scout actually uses the name quite a bit, spelling it out, singing it in the middle of a couple songs and also when he says I love you!

One of my favorite features is bedtime mode. Even though he came pre-loaded, we programmed Scout to play some of the music my son likes for bedtime. By pressing the bedtime paw(Blue embroidered cloud, moon stars), Scout will play bedtime music for 2 minutes. Press again 5 minutes and then 10 minutes. If your child’s name is programmed he will tell them he’s tired and that he wants them to snuggle up – very cute!

I highly recommend Scout as a feature-rich budget conscious gift idea($20). Not only is he cute, he is engaging and offers entertainment from 6 months to 3 years.

For your sanity, a switch on the battery pack at the back allows parents to turn the music up or down of off completely, if needed.

As a bonus, LeapFrog’s My Pal page has color pages, a printable adoption certificate and customizable song pages.
