I just spent 5 gorgeous days in Fiji on holiday. Fijians have beautiful spoken English, very eloquent, natural and polite – a legacy I believe of the British influence that still exists today in their education system. However, unlike some other countries that have been influenced by Western colonialism, Fijians have also retained their own language, culture and traditions and are true bi-linguals. Fijians are a good reminder to the rest of us that two languages can be learned to equal levels of communicative proficiency without sacrificing one for the other or having problems with pronunciation given that the two languages are quite disparate. Fijian is Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) and English is Germanic!

A public groundbreaking ceremony was held last weekend on November 21^st to celebrate the beginning of UNT’s new energy efficient football stadium complex being built.  The stadium is going to be a multi-purpose facility with a capacity of 30,000.  It will also be the nation’s very first college venue to be Gold LEED-certified, one of the highest levels of sustainable achievement.  The stadium will be open for the 2011 football season.

Today, all of the offices in UNT-International came together to have a Thanksgiving feast!  It was a potluck-style meal, so everyone brought his or her favorite traditional Thanksgiving dish to share.  Some of the dishes included turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, green beans, and sweet potatoes, among many others.  There were several traditional desserts as well, including pecan pie and pumpkin pie.  Thanksgiving is a pretty big holiday in the US, and all of us at UNT-I are looking forward to having this Thursday and Friday off to celebrate with our families!

UNT will now offer degree options at Collin Higher Education Center in McKinney due to a new partnership between UNT and Collin College.  President Bataille participated in a signing ceremony on November 9^th to formalize the creating of the center.  Degree options include:

1. Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences — Two concentrations:  Alternative Dispute Resolution and Non-Profit Management, Volunteer and Community Resource Management
2. MS in Engineering Systems — Two concentrations:  Construction Management, Engineering Management
3. Ed.D. in Educational Administration (includes superintendent certification)
4. M.Ed. in Higher Education

Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman"

Besides tomorrows screening of Eat Drink Man Woman for the Ang Lee Film Festival, today’s events are the last chance to celebrate International Education Week at UNT. 

For lunch, stop by the International Welcome Center for “Tea, Samosas, and the Promise of Education,” benefitting internally displaced families of Pakistan from 11:00-12:00.  Then head to the Kerr Hall Cafeteria for a Moroccan lunch menu, lasting until 2:30.

This afternoon, visit Marquis hall room 118 for information on funding international research and scholarly work from 2:00-4:00.  Then from 3:00-7:30, be sure to stop by the Chilton hall Cooking Lab for “Cooking and Tasting around the World” to enjoy a taste-test of cuisines from all over the world!

The next step from real-time communication online has got to be materialising in someone’s lounge and being able to teach, talk and walk as though you were really there with the student. So as long as your virtual holographic teacher can’t see you in your pyjamas, lounging around on the sofa eating chips while you are taking a class, then it’s all good!

Tonight is the first game of the season for the UNT men’s basketball team, and if they win tonight, they will have achieved their 1000^th win!  The team has won 999 games over the past 92 years and is hoping to make it an even 1000 in their game against Cameron at 7:00pm at the Super Pit tonight.  Not surprisingly, UNT was picked to win the Sun Belt West Division in every pre-season publication, as well as the Sun Belt Coaches Poll.  Click here for their season schedule.

Learning English in UK is extremely fascinating because you won’t learn just a language, but also a culture! People are welcoming, they always try to help even if they have no idea!  Except for people who already have a good command of English, we really recommend you to take English classes for some weeks when arriving in the country. It’s very useful to improve your speaking and listening, but you will also improve your writing. There is no better way to speak a correct English, and this will be helpful all your life, for your hobbies or professional carrier. Believe us… Travel… Learn… Experience!

It’s senior high school prize-giving week and it’s incredibly inspiring to see so many young adults looking forward to their futures with such optimism and choosing a wide range of career options that are all equally valued by the school staff.

While Dux is still a prestigious award, the schools I have seen also ensure that sporting, cultural and work based achievements are equally highlighted through awards and monetary scholarships. One of the Head students said in her speech to the graduates – “you are the source of your own success in your journey, no one can stop you from reaching your dreams but yourself, so you are the person who creates your own story”. You could feel a ripple of emotion rip through the crowd – it was quite moving as despite the challenges she had faced, she managed to overcome them all and achieve all she had set out to do.

This message is a lifelong one…what story are you wanting to create?

Yesterday marked the beginning of International Education Week with the deadline for submissions to the essay contest with the theme, “Sustainability:  The Key to Global Citizenship.”  Check back next week for the winning essay!

This weekend is when all the exciting events begin for International Education Week at UNT, starting with the annual celebration of Diwali put on by the India Student Association.  I’ve gone every year for as long as I can remember, and I highly recommend it!  The music, dancing, fashion shows, and FOOD are excellent.  The event will be held in the Auditorium Building on Saturday from 5:45pm to 8:00pm.   For tickets, please go to the information desk on the third floor of the Union.

Dallas Museum of Art

Last night, the One O’Clock Lab Band performed a free concert at the magnificent Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) as part of the museum’s “Jazz in the Atrium” series.  Every Thursday, the DMA hosts a “Thursday Night Live” program that offers family-friendly activities and stays open until 9:00pm.  When you visit the DMA—and I say “when” instead of “if” because it is would be a waste to be so close to Dallas and never visit its outstanding museums!—don’t skip over its fantastic contemporary art collection, and I don’t just say that because it is my personal favorite section of the museum.

One O'Clock Lab Band

Getting back to the One O’Clock Lab Band, it is worth mentioning that this renowned jazz ensemble has been nominated for a Grammy Award and has toured throughout the world, including Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Thailand, and The Netherlands.  The band is directed by Steve Wiest, a Grammy-nominated arranger and associate professor of music. The UNT jazz program — the first of its kind in the nation — is housed within the College of Music, one of the largest and most comprehensive music schools in the nation.
