I can’t believe it’s June already – where has the year gone? The weather is getting warmer and school’s almost out, which means it’s time for summer fun! For most of us, that means trips to the pool and beach, riding bikes, barbecues and fireworks. But summer is also one of the best times to get outside and connect with science everywhere…and now it’s THE LAW.

OK, not quite…but the Illinois General Assembly has passed a resolution to officially designate June as “Leave No Child Inside” month. The Chicago Wilderness alliance has developed the Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights, listing 10 things that every child should be able to do:

Discover wilderness — prairies, dunes, forests, savannas, and wetlands

Camp under the stars

Follow a trail

Catch and release fish, frogs, and insects

Climb a tree

Explore nature in neighborhoods and cities

Celebrate heritage

Plant a flower

Play in the mud or a stream

Learn to swim

I think this is a pretty great list for adults, too… many of us did at least 2-3 of those at BioBlitz last month! I haven’t climbed a tree in awhile, so I think I’m going to work on #5 next. Check out Leave No Child Inside for a calendar of events happening throughout June, and have fun out there! And we’d love to hear about how you’ve explored the outdoors – post on the blog or send me your photos or emails about how you’re discovering the environment around you!

“In the era of climate change, we need generations of citizens who understand and care for the natural world around them. Children who have outdoor experiences when they are young grow up more healthily and are more likely to become stewards of our natural resources. Environmental education teaches children to balance and manage strong economies, create healthy communities, and enjoy our country’s beautiful green and open spaces.”
