ABC Delivers Most-Watched NBA Finals Since 2004 Through Four Games

The NBA Finals on ABC are averaging 15,536,000 viewers through four games, the most-watched NBA Finals in seven years, according to Nielsen. Additionally, the four-game viewership average is up 30% over the 2006 Finals average of 11,934,000 (when Dallas and Miami previously met) and up slightly from last year’s Lakers/Celtics (15,521,000).

The Game 4 audience — a 9.6 rating and 16,126,000 viewers – marked the 23rd consecutive time that an NBA Finals game was the highest-rated program of the night. It was the second most-viewed Game 4 in the last seven years, trailing only last year’s viewer total (16,371,000) by 1%.

The Finals on ABC continue with Game 5 Thursday, June 9, at 9 p.m. ET. Mike Breen calls The Finals on ABC with analysts Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy and reporter Doris Burke. NBA Finals on ABC Most Viewed Since 2004 Averaging 15.3 Million Viewers Through Three Games

Based on fast nationals, the 2011 NBA Finals on ABC – with the Miami Heat leading the Dallas Mavericks 2-1 in the best-of-seven series – are averaging 15,311,000 viewers, 10,543,000 household impressions and a 9.1 rating, according to Nielsen. This year’s Finals have been the most-viewed since 2004 (Los Angeles Lakers/Detroit Pistons – 15,916,000 viewers; 11,228,000 households; 10.4 rating). All three games from the 2011 Finals on ABC have delivered the highest-rated programs of the night.

Compared to 2006, when these same two teams met in The Finals, the series is up 27 percent among viewers, up 21 percent among households and 15 percent in rating. Compared to 2010, this year’s Finals are up one percent in households (10,479,000), up slightly in viewership (15,252,000) and are even in rating (9.1).

22^nd Consecutive Time Finals Generate Highest-Rated Program of the Night

The NBA Finals Game 3 on ABC – in which Miami held on to defeat Dallas 88-86 – delivered an 11.1 overnight rating and was the highest-rated program of the night in prime time, leading ABC to win the night (according to Nielsen). It is the 22^nd consecutive time The Finals have generated the highest-rated program of the night. The 11.1 overnight rating was the second highest-rated Game 3 in the last seven years.

Last night’s Game 3 was up 23 percent compared to a 9.0 rating for Game 3 in 2006, when these same two teams met in The Finals. In the last seven years, the game only trailed last year’s 11.5 overnight rating for Game 3 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.

In Miami, the game registered a 32.3 metered market rating, up 33 percent over Game 3 in 2006 (24.3 metered market rating). It is the third highest-rated NBA game in Miami (records through 2003). The game generated a 26.7 metered market rating in Dallas, an increase over the 25.6 rating for Game 2.

The NBA Finals Game 2 on ABC – in which Dallas pulled off a thrilling fourth quarter rally to defeat Miami 95-93 – delivered a 10.5 overnight rating and was the highest-rated program of the night in prime time, leading ABC to win the night (according to Nielsen). It is the 21st consecutive time The Finals have generated the highest-rated program of the night. The 10.5 overnight rating was the second highest-rated Game 2 in the last seven years.

Last night’s Game 2 was up 15 percent compared to a 9.1 rating for Game 2 in 2006, when these same two teams met in The Finals. In the last seven years, the game only trailed last year’s 10.9 overnight rating for Game 2 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.

In Miami, the game registered a 35.1 metered market rating, the highest-rated NBA game ever locally (records through 2003). The game generated a 25.6 metered market rating in Dallas.

ABC’s Buick Regal NBA Countdown pregame show posted a 3.5 overnight rating, up 25 percent over the comparable 2.8 rating last year.

NBA Finals Game 1 on ABC Delivers Highest Overnight Rating Since 2004

The NBA Finals Game 1 on ABC – in which Miami defeated Dallas 92-84 – generated a 10.7 overnight rating, the highest for a Game 1 of The Finals since 2004 (Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Lakers, 11.5 overnight rating), according to Nielsen.

The 10.7 overnight rating is up 15 percent compared to Game 1 of the 2006 NBA Finals (9.3 overnight rating), when these same two teams played. Additionally, last night’s overnight rating is up three percent compared to a 10.4 overnight rating for last year’s Game 1 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.

In Miami, the top-rated metered market, the game delivered a 31.9 rating, an increase of 28 percent compared to a 24.9 rating locally for Game 1 in 2006. Dallas, ranked second among the metered markets, netted a 29.9 rating, the highest-rated game locally since the 2006 Finals.

Smith on Miami changing its lineup: “It just says how little things become big things. As good as Magloire played in the first game, he didn’t make the impact. Big Z might make the impact. Johnson asking Barkley how this Chicago Bulls team compares defensively to the Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls: “This team [2011 Chicago Bulls] does not compare. First of all, that Bulls [Jordan’s Bulls] team had two players who could play defense. The greatest player [Jordan] and the greatest defender I’ve ever seen in Scottie Pippen. Horace Grant was a good defender but it doesn’t compare.

Johnson: “That team [Jordan’s Bulls] is better?”

Barkley: “No. This team [2011 Bulls] is a better defensive team. There were only two guys on those teams that…I love Steve Kerr but he wasn’t a stopper. I love John Paxson but he wasn’t a stopper. They had Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan who were the two best defenders and Dennis [Rodman] and Horace [Grant] but this team [2011 Bulls], top to bottom with all their guys are better because of two guys Noah and Gibson. They can guard 1s, 2s and 3s.”

Smith: “In this era, this [2011 Bulls] is the best defensive team.”

Kerr on Miami’s collective frame of mind tonight: “It’s all about ball movement and getting some motion offensively for Miami.”

Miller on what Chicago has to do tonight: “Rose and Noah have to set the tone for the [Chicago] defense.”

Kerr on Miami’s lack of bench: “I agree with Erik Spoelstra that his team is a very active, athletic team. I don’t think his bench is. When the two teams go to their respective benches, the energy and athleticism, there is a dramatic shift.”

Miller: Are the Heat being stubborn by not playing Ilgauskus and Erick Dampier? “Eric Spoelstra feels like their not quick enough to keep Noah, Luol Deng and Gibson off the offensive boards. They’re being stubborn. They don’t want to show weakness from Game 1 by saying ‘they should’ve been activated.’”

Kerr on Miami’s matchups: “Spoelstra just likes the matchup with Boozer and Magloire. To me it just shows the lack of depth and the problems Miami has.”

Miller on what Miami needs tonight after a mild start in the game: “You need superhuman efforts from LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and we haven’t seen that in a game-and-a-half.”

Kerr on how Miami has been able to succeed in the playoffs: “Miami has survived throughout these playoffs on free throws. They have scored fewer field goals than their opponents, fewer three-point field goals, they’ve made more turnovers, fewer assists but offensively they really haven’t been great. But from the free-thow line they just kill you.”

Miller on Kyle Korver as a key to Chicago’s outside game: “They are searching for Korver to get going. That’s the last component to this team that has struggled with its outside shooting.”

Kerr to Miller; “Do you agree with what Charles [Barkley] has been saying that [Dallas Mavs forward] Dirk Nowitzki is the best player in the NBA?”

Miller: “It’s hard for me to turn down Kobe Bryant or LeBron James but offensively he’s certainly the most skilled player.”

Kerr: “I would argue that he [Dirk] is clearly better than Kobe Bryant right now. Kobe was ineffective in that series. Dirk Nowitzki, the way he is playing now, I mean, wow!

Webber on what Miami has to do in the second half: “They need to be athletic. When these guys [James and Wade] are attacking the rim, nobody in the League can block their shots. This isn’t the most athletic team but they have maybe two of the most athletic guys. The way these two guys go…shake-and-bake…is the way this Miami team will go.”

Barkley naming the greatest “trash talkers” of all time from the “Ask Charles” segment: “The greatest trash talkers ever: Reggie Miller, Gary Payton, Larry Bird, those are the three greatest trash talkers of all-time and I have to put Michael Jordan in there a little bit too.”

Kerr on Miami’s offense tonight in the third quarter: “We’ve seen much better action from the heat offense in the game. They made better cuts, sharper cuts, better picks and they’re getting better looks.”

Kerr commenting on Miller’s observation that Chicago’s Derrick Rose is not able to “finish” tonight like in Game 1: “The speed of the Miami defense has Rose thinking just a little bit on those finishes. Miami’s defense, especially their starting unit is as fast as any in the NBA.”

Kerr on Miami forward reserve Udonis Haslem and his contribution to the Heat tonight: “If Miami wins tonight…he’s the headline.”

Rajon Rondo, after dislocating his left elbow on a takedown by Dwyane Wade, returned to play with basically one arm as the Celtics take game 3 Saturday night, 97-81. The Heat still lead the NBA 2nd Round Playoff Series two games to one heading into Monday night’s game 4 in Boston.

Boston, down four at the half, held Miami to just 35 points in the 2nd half.

Kevin Garnett led the Cetlics with a game-high 28 points and 18 rebounds.

Paul Pierce scored 27 points, including some clutch, dagger-like 3′s down the stretch to go along with some great defense throughout on Lebron James, who came up with just points.

Delonte West came up big off the bench with 11 points to go along with 6 from Jeff Green.

Shaquille O’Neal, 2 points in eight and a half minutes, returned for the first time in the playoffs.

Well, let’s hope the Celtics are awake and ready for game 2 of their Eastern Conference Semi-finals series against Lebrontourage Tuesday night in Miami. Boston never really seemed comfortable in Sunday’s game one, losing 99-90 in a game that saw the captain, Paul Pierce get ejected even though he was on the receiving end of what should’ve been two flagrant fouls by Lebrontourage’s James Jones and Dwyane Wade.

A couple of things the Celtics can’t repeat if they want to walk away from Miami at 1-1:

Score just 14 points in the opening period.

Let Wade go off for 23 1st half points, 38 overall.

Let Jones go 5-7 from behind the arc, netting 25 points overall.

Get a combined 12-33 effort from Pierce, Kevin Garnettt and Rajon Rondo.

Let Lebrontourage shoot 32 free throws while getting only 18 themselves.

Game 2 is Tuesday night in Miami.

A Valentine to NBA Fans: Two Appearances by Lakers; Miami at Boston on ABC

ESPN and ABC will combine to present five compelling NBA matchups this Valentine’s weekend. The Los Angeles Lakers and All-Stars Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol will make two appearances: visiting the New York Knicks and All-Star Amaré Stoudemire on Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN, and on the road against the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 3:30 p.m. on ABC. Additionally, the Boston Celtics and its All-Star quartet — Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett — will host the Miami Heat and All-Stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. on ABC. ESPN Radio will also broadcast the Heat/Celtics and Lakers/Magic doubleheader.
ESPN’s Lakers/Knicks telecast (February 11) will be followed by the Utah Jazz and All-Star Deron Williams hosting the Phoenix Suns and Steve Nash at 10:30 p.m. ESPN will also televise a Sunday night game February 13, the Oklahoma City Thunder and All-Stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook at the Golden State Warriors and Monta Ellis at 8 p.m. ESPN games are also available via ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV.

TNT NBA Thursday continues on December 2 with an exclusive doubleheader featuring Miami Heat forward LeBron James’ first game in Cleveland since leaving the Cavaliers prior to the season. TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by AutoTrader.com will get preview the game at 8 p.m. (ET) with host Ernie Johnson and analysts Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith live at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Following NBA Tip-Off, James makes his return to Cleveland with the Heat to face Mo Williams and the Cavaliers. James, an Akron, Ohio native, spent seven seasons with the Cavaliers before joining the Heat in the off-season.
