Chances are that you’ve reached for a flashlight that you thought worked, yet you turned it on and no light came on. Either the batteries died or the bulb burned out. LED isn’t nearly as prone to this type of situation as traditional flashlights are.

There’s two ways that an LED flashlight lasts longer than a traditional incandescent or halogen flashlight. First, it can uses less energy. Second, doesn’t have any filament to burn out.

The trip started early (anything before 10 am is early for this author.) But I didn’t mind, it was a Sunday and the first Sunday after grueling months of prepping for the BIG exam. I’d wake up early for things like this, heck I will lose sleep for trips like this. 2ish am we were in South Terminal Bus. Lo and behold, Oslob-bound bus was jam-packed owing to the popularity of the Butandings (whale sharks). The ride was swift, even cradled me to a nap, next thing I know, we were dropped at a very spooky spot in Alcoy and was told that that was Tingko beach. It was pitch dark and no proof of a nearby shore was evident. But we brave the dark with only our LED flashlight (its debut) leading us. True enough, after a few strides and a couple of steep steps down, we were ushered to the powder white sand of Tingko Beach. There was no trace of the morning sun yet so we put up our tent (it’s debut too) and waited. Earlier research told us that sunrise was around 6:15 am, it was only 5 am. Time to catch some precious Zzzzzz. The morning revelry and hullabaloo of the local fishermen woke us up, we were setting up our camera and ready to take some shots of Mr.Sun.

Alas, the host has made his graceful grand entrance.

I am not fond of beach per se, I won’t even spend more than 10 minutes in the waters of Boracay. But I always like chillaxin with the beach as my background- a dreamy vacation. But Tingko was different. The clear waters was so pleasant for lapping, even the seabed was perfect for goofing around. My beach fondness was born.

After an hour or so of heading back and forth to enjoy the waters, we decided it’s time to head to our next stop to catch a hearty lunch. Now the reason why I don’t like beach destination – the problem with decent shower rooms. And Tingko was not an exception. But it wasn’t enough to dampen my growing fondness for this place. There was a poorly built shower room for a small fee. Cleanliness was passable, could be better though. I didn’t even dare checked their toilet for fear of disappointment. Enough to say, we were able to wash away the saltiness and was ready for the next adventure.

We hailed a tricycle for Dalaguete. We were lucky to have a very helpful tricycle driver. He dropped us to this restaurant that turned out to be popular in Dalaguete. Food was good, and they have nice washroom. And it was just in front of the habalhabal stop for Osmena’s Peak.

It was noon time and sun was really up. Show off Mr. Sun. At this point, we were still not certain if we are going to walk from Mantalungon or just start half way from the peak- the jump off. Being newbies in this adventure we opted for the half way drop off. But while aboard Rico’s  bike, we wished we just braved our way to walk. The ride was bumpy and scary at the least. After a dozen pot holes as deep as the craters of the moon, slope as steep as the Everest and plunge roads, bruised arse and shaking legs, we were welcomed by eager school boys working as tour guides on weekends. Rico the driver with mambo bike agreed to pick us up at the same spot a little after sunset. We exchange contact numbers and off we set to conquer the highest peak.

The boys made the treacherous trek look easy. They had our bags and were clad with slippers yet they were leading the pack like walking in the park- literally. Anybody who’s been to the Peak knows the roads are steep and could be slippery after a rainfall. And that day, we had just that. After a quick water break in the spring, we were heading to more treacherous and slippery trek. We made it to one piece.

Serenity surrounds the crowded hills and it was contagious. Can’t help but feel small amidst the vastness of this beauty.

It was a little past noon and we had plenty of time to kill before the sun sets. So after setting up the tent, we caught some Zzzz. Clouds were starting to form and chill starts to fill the air. It was almost 4 pm but the sun was enveloped by pool of clouds.

By 5pm we decided to pack up and head for the Peak. The camp site was a 100 meters or so away. As if on military precision, our boys manifested and off we went to the Peak. It was beautiful in spite of the overcast clouds.We watched the sun fade behind the island of Negros and darkness started to clothe the region- our cue to head back to the waiting Rico and his mambo bike.

We headed back to town proper, grab a quick dinner and waited forever for a bus to Cebu- the downside of commuting. We arrived in Cebu city 9ish, dusty, musty and tired but happy to have conquered 2 of 50 of our goal.

Always keep a flashlight with you when walking alone at night, and be prepared to use it. A good led flash light offers a bright beam for thousands of hours of continuous use, making it a valuable tool in situations when dim lighting leaves you vulnerable to surprise. It is also one of the few self-defense tools that won’t cause any raised eyebrows when you travel. Plus, unlike mace or other weapons, a small LED light cannot be used against you if it is seized during a struggle. Here are a few more ways you can use a simple flashlight for protection:

Light the way. Whether you’re traversing a dark parking lot or walking up a poorly lit street, you’ll be safer with a flashlight in hand. Grip the light firmly in a closed fist, with the bulb end opposite from your thumb. Walk confidently, and shine the light in any dark areas where a person may be hiding.

Secure your vehicle. When returning to your car at night, use a flashlight to illuminate the back seat and underbelly before you get in. These are places an attacker can lie in wait to take you by surprise.

Be aggressive. If a threatening person approaches you, flash your light at him or her, make eye contact, and yell, “Get back!” or “911!” Use a loud, assertive yell, not a scream of fear. Letting your assailant know you are not going to be an easy victim can help dissuade an attack.

Blind your attacker. Shining a bright light into an attacker’s eyes causes temporary disorientation, buying you a precious moment in which to spray mace, flee, or use one of your other self-defense techniques. This effect is short-lived, however, so you should already be on the move when you flash your beam.

Get attention. If an assailant is relying on darkness for cover, illuminating the area with a flashlight–possibly attracting the attention of someone nearby–might be enough of a deterrent to discourage further pursuit. Again, use yelling or a personal alarm to create as much of a ruckus as possible.

Here are some other techniques to help you stay safe at night:

– Be aware of your surroundings. As you walk, scan the area for anything or anyone suspicious.
– Have your keys in hand before you step outside. Digging through your purse will distract you from what’s going on around you.
– Park in well-lit lots or garages. Avoid secluded areas that might provide hiding places.
– Park near security cameras whenever possible.
– Lock your doors and windows as soon as you get in the car.
– Don’t linger. Put your keys in the ignition and drive away immediately.

When wielded in conjunction with other self-defense techniques, an LED flashlight can be a valuable part of your safety arsenal. The key is to be proactive rather than reactive and try not to get taken by surprise.
