 While I was shopping in a major outdoor recreational equipment and sporting goods store, there was physically disabled customer in his electric wheelchair in the customer lineup.  After the clerk rang in his purchases, the customer then requested the cashier to help him affix  his  LED red hanging lights he had just bought, onto his miniature Christmas trees.  They were the same lights used for cyclists and pedestrians.

He had two artificial trees, each strategically mounted on his wheelchair arm rests.  He explained to the cashier, that he really wants to be visible and the lights were in addition to a reflective safety vest draped on the back of his wheelchair.

What an ingenious use of these tiny safety lights.  Someone really cares about their own safety.  He was willing to be a Christmas tree just so that others could see him.

Cyclists, drivers and pedestrians share roadways and paths with these vehicles also.  Where should these mobility units or motorized wheelchairs be on roadways?  On the sidewalk!? On the road?  In bike lanes? Where should they be off-road:   on walking paths? or   bike trails?  More debate is needed.  Some say that people in these devices should be with pedestrians.  Others say they should be share same space as  bicycles on bike   lanes and bike trails.

 The theory of separating traffic by same speed, would group these devices with bicycles.  The people driving them, have shown that their dexterity to move along , is quite fast.  Often the wheelchair drivers are not the best in navigating these units.  They may impede pedestrians.  Is it not best that these motorized units with the speed of bicycles should share cycling infrastructure and let people walk peacefully on sidewalks and walking paths without fear of a motorized device skirting about in their way? Would older people, who are anxious and spooked by things speeding nearby or by sudden noise, will then be more motivated to go out and walk when electric wheelchair users are driving in the cycling facilities?

Given a significant aging population and now empowered with the technology of wheelchairs, and yes, low-cost lights, there will be more wheelchair users  asserting their right to share transportation space and freedom to move around independently outdoors whenever they wish.

Another holiday here in Italy.  The official start of the holiday season.  The feast of the Immaculate Conception.  Surprisingly enough and even if the majority of oh-so Catholic Italians won’t admit it, this has simply become another day for Italians to make a really long weekend, raid the supermarkets for food so that every famliy can boast about how much food there was, and tomorrow morning everyone can brag about where they went and pity the poor slobs who stayed in the city.

In our household it’s become one of the many days we avoid Francy’s family like the plague and attempt to do something quiet and civilized at home.  This is largely in part because Francy is atheist (although an incredibly tolerant atheist) and 3 years of living in a country where the Vatican has waaayyyyyy too much power and influence, I’ve decided to keep any religious aspect of my life at a personal level.

I do however appreciate that Francy does his best to participate in a holiday which doesn’t mean that much to him.  He takes the day’s booty from his advent calendar and smiles.  He added his own personal touch to my nativity scene.  What was formerly a dark and somber manger scene now has a nifty little LED light which at midnight on December 24th will either properly illuminate the birth of our savior Jesus or add a slight X-Files/Alien abduction aspect.  I’m not sure if the light works for me, but I’m touched by his efforts to fuse our 2 worlds together.

After cleaning up around the house a few days ago I dug out an old halogen work light. It does still work, but for the 250W it consumes the light output is woeful at best.

My recent interest in power LED’s has made me wonder if I can improve on its poor efficiency and usefulness.

With that thought in mind I have gone ahead and ordered 3 of Cree’s latest and greates XP-G LED’s.

At around 30% bringer at 1A than the XR-E, the three led’s should be more than enough to be useful. I’m going to use the same drive type as i’m using for the trike lights (I ordered 5) and make it four stage dim’able.  Something along the lines of 100mA, 300mA, 700mA and 1A. It will include a built in rectifier so that it can run straight off an AC plug pack or off 8 to 23V DC (eg car battery).

Should be quite useful with around 1,000 lumen while using less than 12W.

I also should’nt have to wait so long this time for the LED’s. I have ordered them from a location here in Australia rather than from HK.

It will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

My last object for today is the SunJar. This is a LED light again, but the cool thing about it is that it stores sunlight when directly placed in it to shine at night. I’ve mentioned LED lighting before.  Again, most of the stuff you see on shelves in the stores right now like the Lights of America bulbs at Costco isn’t ready for prime time.  The colors are ghastly, the light output is underwhelming, and the design is such that I doubt will lead to long lamp life (LED fixtures need a way to dissipate heat to retain their life).  You can try them in your garage or an outdoor fixture, but I wouldn’t buy too many of them.

CREE LED Lighting is a great choice for residential applications.

Having said that, I continue to be very impressed with the CREE lighting—enough to install it in multiple prominent locations in my own home.  The2700K fixture is warm and very suited to a residential application.  It’s bright, dimmable, and just plain looks good.   It’s one of the few that has thus far earned the ENERGY STAR label.  The 50,000 hour rating is certainly intriguing, too.  Right now, CREE LEDs are only available as recessed fixtures—but it you’ve got recessed lighting, this just might be the ticket for you.
