No more music reviews for a few weeks. I’ve found what I’ll be listening to for the fore

No more music reviews for a few weeks. I’ve found what I’ll be listening to for the foreseeable future. It’s almost too ridiculous to be real and pretty much a rundown of my favourite bands from ages twelve to twenty-four. Dave Grohl, drummer for Nirvana and I guess the Foo Fighters too, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, probably the single greatest influence I’ve ever had for playing bass (when I was first learning I would play along to Zeppelin I and II to emulate every one of his lines) and Josh Homme, Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Desert Sessions creative mastermind and the best guitarist playing today. That’s Them Crooked Vultures. The super group to end all super groups.

Oh Jesus.

As to be expected, the riffs are gigantic, the drums and bass are heavy as Mac trucks, the lyrics irreverent and the vocal melodies as catchy as anything. Every one of the tracks on Them Crooked Vultures is a straightforward foot stomper, usually broken into massive instrumental climaxes and with each bar packed with as many impressive instrumental licks as possible without completely giving in to total overindulgence (Mind Eraser, No Chaser possibly possessing the highest volume of squealing guitar fills a song is capable of supporting).

It’s difficult to write about only a few outstanding songs but its easy to identify a few tunes as good indications of the album’s sound. The stupidly catchy refrain of New Fang, the disorienting tempo of the most Zeppelinesque track, Elephants and the nearly indescribable quality of the guitar work (from Homme’s always fantastic store of unique tones) on the recurring chorus of Scumbag Blues all serve as great examples of the album’s feel.

There’s enough variety here to make Them Crooked Vultures a consistently interesting listen too. Interlude with Ludes neatly breaks up the album a little after it’s halfway mark, cleansing the palette with its conspicuous absence of massive guitars and pounding drums and bass — before once again breaking into the heavy, broken-glass blues of Warsaw (or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up).

The choice to let the ear breathe is a smart one and is reflected even in the sporadic rests dropped throughout songs. It shows the same understanding that made Queens of the Stone Age’s Songs for the Deaf so great — turn the volume down on your listener for thirty seconds so that the next attack sounds fresh again. Attention to dynamics make a hard or heavy record retain shelf life and ensures that complete album play throughs are actually enjoyable, unlike, say, The Locust, a band that’s interesting but impossible to listen to at full volume for an hour. It’s an effect that Homme has deftly employed on every one of his albums and it’s one of the reasons that this album works as well as it does.

I could gush more but I won’t. If you’re a fan of one of the contributing artists, and most likely you are, then give this one a listen. It’s probably the best straight-up rock album coming out this year and one that is nearly impossible to take out of the CD player (or iTunes playlist for you fancy types).

And I was joking. I’ll stop listening long enough to write more music reviews but I won’t like it.

— Reid

tk weighs in: What is the most important band or artist of the decade? I pondered this question duri

tk weighs in:

What is the most important band or artist of the decade?

I pondered this question during my entire stroll down Gower Ave. from Sunset to Santa Monica (all 0.5 miles) and here’s what I came up with. These aren’t controversial choices but who needs controversy when there’s a possibility for accuracy?

First of all, let’s address the other decades.
50s- Elvis, hands down
60s- Beatles, hands down
70s- Led Zeppelin (or Pink Floyd)
80s- Michael Jackson
90s- Nirvana

And that brings us to this decade. As of now, I have narrowed it down to these artists:
Radiohead
Animal Collective
Eminem (or Lil Wayne or Jay-Z… consumers of important rap, help me out here)

Thoughts? Ideas? Nuggets of insight?

ck weighs in:

It’s hard for me to go against your selections. Radiohead is definitely up there. In the 2000s, they released the phenomenal Kid A, the incomprehensible Amnesiac (I never really ‘got it’), the return-to-prominence Hail to the Thief, and the overrated (but revolutionary) In Rainbows. Those four albums can stand up against any artist’s production in the last 10 years. Regardless of whether you think they’re the best band of all time or hopelessly overrated, the “pay-what-you-want” marketing campaign for In Rainbows definitely stuck Radiohead in the cultural lexicon for good and symbolized the downfall of the music industry throughout the decade.

Animal Collective is another exciting choice. Their entire discography is in the 2000s. Since the turn of the century, Animal Collective has released studio albums Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished (2000), Danse Manatee (2001), Campfire Songs (2003), Here Comes The Indian (2003), Sung Tongs (2004), Feels (2005), Strawberry Jam (2007), and Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009), as well as four EPs, two live albums, and eight singles.

In addition to being prolific, however, Animal Collective has been one of the most creative outfits of the decade. I am admittedly a latter-half AC fan; I hardly listen to anything before Sung Tongs. That being said, even listening to just those four albums shows the width and depth of their creative sound. Who can you possibly compare them to? Who are Animal Collective’s influences? Neutral Milk Hotel, maybe? The Beach Boys? Where does a song like Peacebone come from? Animal Collective’s importance is wrapped in the creativity of their output. They get better and better with each album, as they careen toward accessibility without leaving behind their weirdness.

I’m not sure if I can agree with you on Eminem. Yes, he was huge. Yes, he was culturally relevant. And yes, he was a pretty good rapper. But he was inactive for 3+ years, and he was a shell of his former self on 2008’s Relapse. He was also the “shocking musician” du jour, which can help with publicity, but rarely leads to a lasting legacy. He seems more interested in being controversial than being innovative.

I would, instead, submit for your consideration, one Justin Timberlake.

At the turn of the decade, there was no bigger pop group than ‘N Sync. Their second album, No Strings Attached, dropped in 2000, driven by the success of initial single Bye Bye Bye. 2001 saw the release of disappointing third album Celebrity, and the group went on hiatus in 2002.

Timberlake took this hiatus as an opportunity to conquer the music world on his own, with 2002’s Justified. The album took the world by storm, propelling JT to immediate stardom. Since then, he’s been dating movie stars, hosting Saturday Night Live, causing wardrobe malfunctions, voicing characters in Shrek sequels, and generally living large.

After the death of Michael Jackson (RIP), the world is starving for a superstar musician. I have long believed that Justin Timberlake is that man. I even wrote a column for my college newspaper titled, “Justin Timberlake: The new King of Pop“. His music is ubiquitous and his presence can make even the Black Eyed Peas sound respectable. What more do you need from the MOST IMPORTANT MUSICAL SPECIMEN of the 2000s?

What do YOU think? Register your opinion in the comments.

The above is not a setlist as much as this year’s most exciting megamix – and there’s a phrase I haven’t bandied around with complete abandon since 2004. Previously, I mentioned something of writing about my favourite remixes of the year and although perhaps this isn’t the ’something’ I was expecting to write, c’est la vie. This year has been fucking awful for good remixes. I could only find three that met my flaky standards. One was the Stuart Price remix of Paparazzi which I overplayed anyway and don’t really enjoy any more, and doesn’t exist much outside of the middle eight anyway. Another was the Does It Offend You, Yeah? remix of Uprising that sometimes is better than the album version – a claim which is completely reliant on my mood at any given moment in time. But I’m a complete whore for DIOY,Y remixes anyway, so it’s a completely predictable anticlimax. The third was the Filthy Dukes mix of To Lose My Life that I thought was fun for a few weeks but it dulled quickly. Thinking about it, I only really liked it because it sounded like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, White Lies and Bimbo Jones in one big melting pot, then I realised that they all do their own thing independently and it sounds better than this track. And with that thought, this brief flirtation was o-v-a-h.

I was reminiscing about the Teignmouth weekend a couple of days ago and realised that Zane Lowe’s warm up set for the evening was, not only one of the best openers I’ve seen for a band, but it fit the bill for resuscitating this dismal commentary. I’ve seen Zane DJ in a couple of other venues before, but he didn’t leave any kind of impression on me. This clicked. He actually did two half hour sets sandwiched between some really happening local bands, and the second was superior to the first, which is above. Rather annoyingly, the audio of the second never surfaced, and I don’t remember much of it other than an amazing remix of Bonkers, so I can’t even describe it. It was amazing. But back to the first set – Zane made me dance. I never dance. Ever. I’ve never understood the appeal behind DJing, or how some people are into it in the same way that I’m into peanut butter M&Ms (you’re pressing play on a track someone else created? Inspirational.) but I have a new found appreciation for it all now. Kind of.

I loved the way it was put together – though I will say that the airhorns all the way through got me excited for a play of the Freemasons remix of Ring The Alarm, which Zane obviously did not play: it was so not the audience for the Freemasons (myself aside, and I would have danced for everyone else there if it had come on), but I loved all of the thought which had gone into each track and how it would work best in the mix. It was a great blend of genres, alongside music from today and music from ye olden days as well that provided an education for some of the younger audience members there (“Isn’t this from that Fatman Scoop song?”). It created an air of context for the set Muse went on to play, both musically and emotionally, and that’s a beautiful thing.

I would have taken System of a Down out though. I hate that song. Flobots would have worked just as well there.

Nice work Zane Looooooooooooooooooowe. I’m on board.

Ok, ok, ok, so for us who prayed to the gods for a Zeppelin re-union tour in our lifetime we now know it ain’t gonna happen. I was trolling the web the other day and discovered that the official Led Zeppelin website has quite a generous offering of vintage videos (some in their entirety and other snippits) from the 1968 through post 1980 breakup; their most recent 2009 concert at the O2 Arena in London is not featured which is a bummer.

There are some very cool vintage performances featured . I personally enjoyed the 1969 performance of How Many More Times (Danish TV ) & 1979’s performance of Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Knebworth).

Click here to check out what Jimmy, Robert, and Jonesy have made available for us.

If they don’t ever reunite at least we have these incredible performances to enjoy. Check them out and tell us what you think!

***Please note that the link above is safe and will take you to the Official Led Zeppelin website. However, when I googled “Led Zeppelin 1969 Danish TV” to find the remainder of the 1969 Danish show (How Many More Times) and ended up finding a website that had “supposedly” offered the remainder of the original broadcast, please do not do this. BEWARE if you do this since that site is bogus and instead of getting the concert you get a nasty Trojan virus and Malware issues (do not fall for the bogus window that pops that looks like your hard drive saying that your computer is corrupted, it’s not, and do not attempt to download the offered software it too is a scam, so please be aware.

I’m currently reading a book by Danny Goldberg called Bumping Into Geniuses. It’s a perfect book for me to be reading because, not only does Goldberg have fascinating tales to tell about bumping into and working with some of my favorite geniuses (including the likes of Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Bonnie Raitt), but his career path is something I’m trying to emulate.

In fact, I’d unknowingly been trying to follow Goldberg’s career path before I even knew who he was. Now, as I read it, the book is validating my seemingly lofty assumption that I can turn my position as a starving journalist with a geeky obsession with music and musicians into a career as a legitimate, successful music industry executive and artists’ advocate. Goldberg went from being a rock critic to doing PR for Led Zeppelin to running Atlantic Records. Who’s to say I can’t do something like that?

The book’s title comes from Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun’s answer to how to make it in the music business: keep walking around until you bump into a genius. He was obviously simplifying things, but a running theme of the book is the absence of a formula when nurturing a career in music. In the beginning of the book, Goldberg quotes the legendary Atlantic Records president Jerry Wexler (who, incidentally, also began his career as a journalist) in reference to music industry secrets. “First of all, there aren’t any secrets. And second of all, if there were any secrets, we wouldn’t tell them.” This was before Goldberg had begun his own admirable career. And, in hindsight, Goldberg himself says, “What few secrets there were could not be of any help to anyone else. But there were stories.”

So, what can I learn from these men? I can glean confidence from their stories and appreciate my own. And I can hope that if I keep walking in the right direction, I’ll eventually position myself at the right place at the right time and bump into a few geniuses myself.

                                                   Rainman

“It was back in the early 1980’s” when the phone rang and the kids mother answered the phone!

the kids mother told him that it was his best friend “Mike Oprisiu” on the phone, little did the kid know that, this was a phone call that would change his life forever.Mike Oprisiu when the kids best friend that lived down the street.Mike Oprisiu then invited this boy over to play and well, this kid was so excited he stop everything he was doing and went on his way to Mike Oprisiu house.when he got there mike went downstairs and called this little boy to come down to the basement,Mike said he would like to show him something. When this little boy got downstairs Mike was not alone,Brian Williaams another neighbor was there and they had taken off his clothes and beat him where there would be evidence of a beating, then they repeatly”beat and raped” this boy numerous times,Mike Oprisiu’s mother Bonnie Oprisiu and Mark Oprisiu was at the hosipital seeing their Father Eugene Oprisiu, he was sick during these days.

Brain Williams had left and Mike Oprisiu had continued with raping this kid until Brian Oprisiu,”Mike’s younger brother”had heard crying in the basement,Brian grabbed a stick and started beating Mike with a stick and Brian started crying and when he was yelling at Mike,Brian called him a monster and started saying why, why? You are a monster.this is your best friend, you raped me,you raped Okyo Taliski,This little boys sister, why Mike? Then he would hit him again,Mike just laughed and then this boy finally got his clothes and left toward home.he made it about two houses down the street and went between this house to cry, then a lady came out of the house and said to her husband, I just found this little boy crying, the boy could not even speak. She asked him what was wrong and the boy could not say a word. Then the boy got home and the first thing his mother had said was,you had been crying? The boy said No mom,I’m ok .When Bonnie Oprisiu (Mikes Mother) and Mark Oprisiu (Mikes older Brother) got home,Brain Oprisiu (Mikes younger Brother) must have told them what happened. This is how they handled this brutal crime,Bonnie called up this little boy and asked him if he would meet with Mark down the street. The boy said yes,Mark asked this boy not to go to the Westland Police and he would take care of this problem himself.

This is a true story! and if you are a young boy and been through something like this,”go to the Police” because you will need help dealing with something like this, you cant not keep it covered up inside!Bonnie and Mark were wrong in how they handled this problem!

It seems different when your a boy and when you been through something like this!, I feel no matter what “people think” of you,go to the Police!

It’s important that people know the truth about these people!

                                                                                                                                                             The little boy

P.S.

How many other victim’s has there been from Michael Oprisiu?

I can name at least “4″

Sei pazza?

Tu sei completamente fuori di testa!

Tu non sei mica normale eh.

Non hai tutte le rotelle a posto.

Sei completamente fuori di melone.

Ma che hai battuto la testa?

Ecco. Son cose che mi sento dire TUTTI i giorni. Più volte al giorno. Perchè qualche rotella fuori posto evidentemente ce l’ho.

Enjoy

Them Crooked Vultures Them Crooked Vultures 2009 DGC Records Them Crooked Vultures is the new super

Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures

2009

DGC Records

Them Crooked Vultures is the new supergroup consisting of Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana (like you didn’t know that), Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, and John Paul Jones. Do I really even need to state where he’s from? It’s John Paul Jones. Alright, of Led Zeppelin. I don’t think you’re catching on… JOHN PAUL JONES of LED ZEPPELIN. Grohl and Homme must’ve been the most ecstatic people on the planet. Ever.

So, the group formed in 2005, and… wait. 2005? Is that true Wikipedia? If it is (which apparently it is, since Grohl provided an interview with Mojo about the collaboration), why wait so long? It’s been four years! I understand that yes, they’re all busy people. Grohl has the Foo Fighters, Homme has QotSA, Kyuss, Eagles of Death Metal, whatever. And yeah, Jones does a lot, but nothing extremely substantial. If I were Grohl and Homme and I heard I’d be collaborating with John Paul Jones, excuse me, Mr. JOHN PAUL JONES of LED ZEPPELIN, I’d drop everything. Foo Fighters can take a backseat for a little bit. This is more important. By far (and I like the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. Imagine if they were bands I didn’t like, what I’d say?).

So anyway, they just released their debut album, Them Crooked Vultures. The album starts off with “No One Loves Me & Neither Do I.” The song’s a bluesy slower tempo romp. The percussion is amazing (with Grohl on drums), and the guitar is pretty cool too. And let me get this out there, the entire album is extremely bass-heavy. Which is awesome, because Jones is amazing on the album. This song features distant sounding vocals from Homme, with tons of reverb. While it’s not a great song, it at least shows that the three meld together really well, and it’s still interesting, and enjoyable. Best part though (which gets the album really going): halfway through, the band stops, and a big volume jump occurs. The bass is so heavy and the repletion is awesome.

“Mind Eraser, No Chaser” features a great guitar riff, with a less-than-great raw solo in the intro. The chorus is pretty catchy, with a call-and-answer section. This is one of the best songs on the album, but unfortunately, it suffers from too much. There’s too much noise, too many guitars, and the vocals have too many effects. This regrettably is a theme for the whole album. Luckily, the arrangements of the songs almost make up for it. Strangely, after the heaviness of “Mind Eraser,” midi horns (I think horns) come in, providing a great contrast to their sound.

“New Fang” is the first single from the album, and the audience can understand why. It’s starts with great drums from Grohl, and then really cool-sounding contrasting guitar and bass. The vocals are great, even with Homme using falsetto a little bit. The memorable chorus features Homme’s witty writing, “Sometimes you break a finger on the upper hand, I think you’ve got me confused with a better man.” The instrumental breaks are great as well, ringing guitars, heavy bass, pounding drums, and noise solos that actually work in this song. Then, showing off their talent in arrangements, a key change comes in! It’s definitely one of the best singles of the year, I submit.

“Dead End Friends” starts with out-of-tune guitars, leading into a rhythmic riff. It’s a heavy song, so the vocals aren’t particularly outstanding. They’re unfortunately monotonous. Jones, however, has a great bass line that shows off a lot on this track.

“Elephants” is one of my favorite songs from the album. The intro riff is admirable, and leads perfectly into a fast paced rhythm, that will get stuck in one’s head. And before any vocals come in, the band shifts into a math-rock style. The lyrics are some of the better ones in this song (“Slick back my hair, you know the devil’s in there?” offers a great image, I believe). The band keeps the song interesting, for being so long, with slower parts and buildups as well. It’s construction is almost flawless.

“Scumbag Blues” is, indeed, a blues-based rock (seems I’m using that phrase a lot this week). Homme’s vocals are different here, showing a higher-register than we’re used to. Also, not as much noise is heard on this track, and the guitar lines are kept to a minimum of bleeding into each other. Dave Grohl, keeps a great beat during the middle-eight of the song, which offers an almost acid-rock genre bend.

The next two songs, “Bandoliers” and “Reptiles”, while both being enjoyable, are regrettably forgettable. The latter at least uses a different technique on the vocals, bass, and guitar lines which is cool. But the song just doesn’t hold up as well as some other songs.

“Interlude With Ludes” is the song that doesn’t fit on the album, allowing for a break in the heavy-rock tone for just a little while. Echo is heard on the vocals (along with other effects). The best part of the song is Grohl’s drumming which takes the lead. The percussive hits are unlike any sounds I’ve heard before, and fit perfectly with the psychedelic noise which is ninety percent of the song.

Afterwards, the listener is treated to the epic song “Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up” (what a goddamn, long name). After a few guitar noises, a slow-tempo hard rock song comes in, perfect for a sloth-like, muddy sound. After the verse, the song picks up a little bit, introducing keyboards and strange, creepy background vocals. The bass and guitar have a powerful riff, creating the heaviness more than anything else. During the extended solo, the pace picks up seamlessly, leading into a nice drum fill section with ringing guitar. This reminds me of “Dazed and Confused” during the noise section where the bass and drums follow each other perfectly. And finally, the outro is awesome with noises coming in and out, the bass keeping the song balanced.

Again, “Caligulove” and “Gunman” are two really enjoyable songs, but fail to stand up to the rest of the album. The problem is with so much to sift through, the listener will skip over a few songs if they don;t take a break from the album. They are two thoroughly acceptable songs though.

Finally, the ultimate track, “Spinning on Daffodils” comes in. The intro is a beautiful piano solo. With guitar noise and feedback in the background. Which makes it awesome for being different. Then a pull-on guitar riff comes in, one of the better ones on the album. With deep vocals (and harmonies), the song retains the heaviness of the album. During the first half on the song (again, it’s an epic over-seven minute song), the bass and drums play off of each other, keeping a repetitive nature going. After four minutes, there’s finally a buildup (and Homme groaning, keeping a weirdness factor relevant), that lasts for a few minutes. Indeed, the song is all buildup, which is actually pretty cool. A fadeout comes early, leaving atmospheric guitars and a kick-ass bass solo. Honestly, the end of the album is done perfectly, leaving only a hint of a song left in the mind of the listener. Perfect “what the hell?” moment, but done in a great creative way.

The debut album from the power trio does seem a little long, and could be better, but it’s the debut album (Hopefully, there will be more!), so it can be forgiven. The band amalgamates (damn, look at that word) very well. The sound could’ve been developed slightly better, with less noise overall, but for fans of hard rock, it’s a relief to the mundane offerings by most hard rock bands currently. Surprisingly, Pitchfork has a very insightful review on the album. Although I would’ve given the album at least a seven. Still, they have a point that with all three huge members, the album can get a little muddled. But it’s worth it for some kick-ass rock.
