I just bought myself a string of LED Christmas lights. If you know me, they’re not to put on my tree, but to make a few really awesome projects:

I’ll start with a bunch of LED Throwies:

Developed by the guys at Graffiti Research Lab who specialize in non-destructive forms of graffiti, these LED Throwies are a great way to graffiti any ferromagnetic suface with light.

Not to mention that even without the magnet, there are so many great uses for them:

LED Floaties
Like Throwies except you put these into balloons and let them float around on the ground to be kicked around and played with. You could even float them on a pool or pond for some awesome party decorations!

LED Frosties
Again, similar to LED Throwies, but this time, you put them on ice. Totally awesome for a party!

Ice Bulb (aka Ice Crystal Ball)
I would so love to make a wizard’s staff with this thing on the end.

Lit Christmas Cards
Sweet! These cards are gorgeous! I wonder what else you can do with the same concept?

Electric Origami
Make your own circuitry on paper, and then light it up (with an LED of course).

LED Picture Boxes (I like to call them LED blocks)
They’re just little little paper boxes with LEDs in them, but if you made them out of plastic, they would be the ultimate building blocks for kids!

LED Chess
This is fun. Great when you have a couple of really bored guys in the middle of the night. Now they just need to light up the board too.

Hey there, and happy holidays! This week, Chris and I took a look back at the predictions we made at the end of 2008. How did they stack up? Whose predictions were more accurate? And does it depend upon who’s keeping score? All these questions and more are answered in Monday’s episode.

On Wednesday, we published part two on our series about electronics. Chris and I talk about some of the basic elements you’ll find in electronic circuits. We give you the scoop on resistors, transistors, capacitors and more. By the time you finish listening to the episode, you’ll know why it’s incredibly dangerous to root around inside an old television set even if it is turned off or unplugged.

Keep an ear out for our predictions episode for 2010. After the massive success of our 2009 predictions show, we couldn’t resist trying it again. Will one of us predict that by the end of the year the human race will be working for a race of robotic overlords? What do we have to say about the Apple tablet? And what does Leo Laporte’s This Week in Tech have to do with our predictions? Stay tuned to TechStuff and you’ll soon find out!

Thanks for listening!

Okay, so they’re not evil as in blow up buildings and hurt people. They’re more like evil as in hide in a secret lab and make cool things. This site (Evil Mad Scientist Labs) has some really awesome projects. Of course here are some of my favorites:

Ice Cream Gyoza
Gyoza is like a Japanese meat-filled dumpling. Kind of like a Japanese version of empanadas. This version is filled with ice cream though. This would be great if we did the switch-aroo birthday party for my brother again (the cake was a sandwich, and the chicken was a cake – it was fun).

Dessert Sushi
Another classic it’s-usually-a-main-dish-but-now-it’s-dessert recipe. This is awesome if you don’t like fish (or are allergic to it). I’ve seen mock sushi before this is the biggest variety I’ve ever seen! This guy has a ton of time and imagination.

The Peggy
It’s like making your own display board (like those you see outside some stores). This can be a really fun project.

Crunchy Frogs
Yes, all you Monty Python fans, this is indeed an edible version of crunchy frogs. I sent this to a friend who eats, sleeps, and breaths Monty Python, and she absolutely loved it. Here’s a link to the video for reference >

SymmetriSketch
A fun little program for playing with symmetry. Great for making super awesome snowflakes.

A 12-Side Dice Handbag
Perfect for any gamer. I need to make one for a friend of mine who has an impressive collection of dice.

A Year Later, Coal-Ash Spill Still on EPA’s Long To-Do List: One year after the failure of an earth-and-ash dam holding back 1 billion gallons of waterlogged ash from a Tennessee power plant, most of the ash that flooded out and covered 85 acres of land, “is still there. And the problem of similar coal-ash ponds still sits on the long and fast-expanding to-do list of President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency.” – Washington Post

Microsoft + GM = ??: Brian Miller has some fun with the news that former Microsoft chief financial officer Chris Liddell is joining General Motors as CFO. In “the coming collision between Rust Belt and Silicon Forest,” maybe we’ll see a Chevy Volt recharging via USB port and the end of compatibility with Apple devices. Oh, and, “Instead of gentle chiming when seatbelts aren’t connected, drivers will be berated by the recorded voice of an enraged Steve Ballmer.” — Seattle Weekly

Climate Blame Game, Round 1: “Chinese officials, stung by criticism in the West that China had sabotaged a legally binding agreement for reducing greenhouse gases during talks in Copenhagen, fired back on Tuesday, saying that wealthy nations were seeking to sow discord among developing countries in a cynical attempt to avoid reducing their own emissions.” — New York Times

Compulsory Green Energy on the Table: “China’s top legislature Tuesday discussed a legal amendment to require electricity grid companies to buy all the power produced by renewable energy generators.” — Xinhua

Holiday Cheer for LEDs: “Decorative LED holiday lights appear to be catching on in homes across the country. With the nation’s most iconic Christmas trees lighting the way — the White House and Rockefeller Center trees are decked out in LEDs — retailers are reporting brisk sales for the lights this season, despite the rough economy.” — NYT’s Green Inc.

The blog Aging Suite has a great piece on how elderly people can stay safe during the holidays; holi

The blog Aging Suite has a great piece on how elderly people can stay safe during the holidays; holiday decorations and extension cords can increase the risk of falls. Home care professionals, make sure you take a moment to look around and make sure there no cords are overloaded or hidden by rugs or debris, and make sure that the tree (if it’s real) doesn’t dry out.

I’d like to add another suggestion: LED lights. LEDs are much safer in that they don’t put out nearly as much heat as traditional light bulbs, and therefore are far less of a fire hazard. (And less worrisome if the patient forgets to unplug them at night.) LEDs are also cost effective and won’t add as much to the electric bill. You can order a cheap set from Amazon.com or pick one up at Target. You can also put the lights on a timer, so that they go off automatically at certain times, thereby eliminating the risks of lights left on over night. You may want to discuss these options with the patient’s family as well.

Last week, my mom and I went to my grandma’s house to help her with her tree. While I searched her boxes of decorations for garland (with no luck, so only a third of the tree bears a sparkly white garland…oh well) I found two boxes of lights from the 1940s. Man, are they cool. And supposedly a collector’s item. I’d sure love to string them up, but if they could talk, I just know they’d say “I’ll melt your curtains”.

Today was the coldest day thus far. It was 19F outside when I go up. No snow today. Just cold and windy.

The wind had blown snow onto the driveway in spots, so instead of doing my walk, I shoveled what little snow there was off the driveway, and then sprinkled calcium-chloride all over it.

Because of the lower temperatures, you could see where people had walked the night before. Their foot prints had turned to white icy patches on the black asphalt.

I shoveled the cobblestone walkway to the back door too. I know those people raised here probably think I’m nuts, but I really don’t like ice buildup on the walk-way and driveway. Aside from that, I don’t mind shoveling snow. I find it cathartic.

The drive in to Rochester this morning wasn’t bad. The sky was quite pretty with the silhouette of trees against it.

Elizabethe wants to decorate for Christmas tomorrow. I do enjoy seeing other people’s Christmas decorations, but I really don’t like putting them up, and taking them down I dislike even more. Stringing wires is too much like work, and of all the things I have to do when working, stringing wires is my least favorite.

I suggested we get a weather-proof LCD projector, mount it in the big maple tree and aim it at the house. I’ll create a slide show of colored dots and patterns that will project on the house and it will look like we have lights.

That idea got vetoed.

What about little sticky dots that consist of an LED and battery. You just stick them where you want light. Surely, with LED and battery technology being where it is today they could come up with a little dot that would stay lit for days. In fact, add a little sensor so that it is only on when it is dark. You could space them as close or as far away as you want. You could arrange them in any shape you want, and you wouldn’t have to worry about what to do with those gangly wires.Or, could they come up with a glow-in-the-dark paint that would charge up during the day, and glow for the first several hours after sundown. You could paint little dots on the house. After Christmas, just take some touch-up paint to cover them up for the rest of the year. (I’d rather paint than string wires. And, I’ve already said how much I dislike house painting.)

Capture fire-flies… never mind.

There must be an easier way to do Christmas lights.

The Iron Samurai watch, a spectacularly ugly bracelet-style watch made from “Samurai sword carbonized steel folded 1000x over,” is available from Chinavision for a questionable $15. It also comes with one of the weirdest/funniest product descriptions I’ve ever seen.

The watch, a form of which we’ve previously seen as a concept, hides red LEDs inside the pattern of the bracelet, which is kind of cool in theory but dorktacular in practice. Some highlights from the bizarre product description:

[It has] blood red numerals encased in stark samurai sword steel like the final battle between all the forces of good and evil in the multiverse

Yes, The Iron Samurai has been known to increase its wearers’ strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma by as much as 20 points each! Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal are said to be Iron Samurai owners, as is David Bowie and Brian Eno. In reality, this watch is perfect for Presidential dinner crashers, Facebook celebs with over 1000 fans, Youtube directors with over 2,000,000 views, anyone who can play the entirety of Neil Zaza’s I’m Alright on electric guitar, iPhone 3Gs owners, or anybody who is a somebody.

Home Controls is known for its wide array of products that can provide one’s home with comfort

Home Controls is known for its wide array of products that can provide one’s home with comfort, convenience, and security. Well, Home Controls also carries products that are not home-related, but still offer great value, such as this simple but totally functional illuminated safety vest. At first, I thought the vest didn’t fit in with the typical Home Controls product line, but after a bit more pondering, it does fit right in because it’s one of those items that once you get used to it, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it! I’m talking about peace of mind here.

The Maxsa Innovations Reflective Safety Vest with LEDs screams of safety right out of the package. The one-size-fits-all, highly visible orange-yellow mesh fabric is striped with sewn-in reflective bands. In the center of the vertical bands are a total of 16 red LEDs, eight on the front and back, which can flash or stay on continuously. You can be seen from up to half a mile away! A small battery pack that holds two AA batteries is attached to an inner pocket of the vest. The battery pack has a gasket around it and is sufficiently protected from rain water and general splashing, but I wouldn’t recommend submerging it under water for any period of time. The vest is fastened closed with a generous strap of hook-and-loop closure.

The vest is perfect for joggers and walkers, bikers, both pedal powered and motorized, traffic directors, construction workers, and for anyone who needs to be seen, especially in the dark. I walk my dog a lot at night and wearing the vest assures me that drivers on the street will see me gleaming like a beacon, on the sidewalk, of course. As for making my dog visible, I’m in the process right now of modifying a vest so that it fits her German Shepherd body just right!

If you’re looking for a stocking stuffer, this vest is it. Give the vest to family members and friends who have a car and have them keep it in their trunk as part of their safety kit. Don’t forget to include the batteries! Anyone who has ever had a roadside emergency, like changing a flat tire on a busy freeway at night, will greatly appreciate the added safety you have provided them with the Maxsa Innovations Reflective Safety Vest.

I’m dreaming of a GREEN Christmas . . . Yes, the holidays draw out the best in most of us each

I’m dreaming of a GREEN Christmas . . .

Yes, the holidays draw out the best in most of us each year. But they also bring what seems like an environmentalist’s worst nightmare: tons of extra garbage, millions of chopped-down trees, and megawatts of flashing lights. With a little tweaking, however, everything from holiday gift-giving to light-stringing can celebrate the environment, too. Here’s how:

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s day, Americans throw away a million extra tons [900,000 metric tons] of garbage each week, including holiday wrapping and packaging, according to Robert Lilienfeld. Lilienfield is co-author of the book Use Less Stuff: Environmental Solutions for Who We Really Are.

So why not recycle holiday gift wrap? Lilienfield, who has published a newsletter on reducing waste since 1996, notes that if every family reused just 2 feet [0.6 meter] of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles [61,000 kilometers] of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.

And not all gifts need wrapping. “Think back to your three favorite holiday memories,” Lilienfeld said. “I’m willing to bet that they all involve time you spent with your family and friends.”

By giving gifts that can be experienced, like tickets to a baseball game or a homemade dinner, you can minimize wrapping and still win points with the receiver. “People like these gifts just as much,” he said.

Fake Fir

For many, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a live, fragrant Christmas tree in their home. Today nearly all of the trees sold at seasonal Christmas-tree lots are grown on tree farms. So forests aren’t hurt by choosing a cut tree, said Jeff Olson, the vice-president of marketing and development for American Forests, a Washington, D.C.-based conservation nonprofit.

While potted trees might seem like a green option, they often don’t fare well in unseasonably warm homes. “The last thing you want to do is bring it into the house,” Olson said. He plans to get a potted tree this year and keep it outside for the holidays.

Artificial trees, he noted, consume significant energy and petroleum-based materials during their manufacture.

But Lilienfeld, the Use Less Stuff co-author, noted that a one-time purchase of an artificial tree can save gas otherwise used for annual trips to the local tree farm.

Tree Recycling

Recycling fresh trees after Christmas can make a huge difference in reducing holiday waste. Instead of taking up space in the landfill, trees can be ground into wood chips, which can be used to mulch gardens or parks or to prevent erosion at a local watershed.

The National Christmas Tree Association, an organization which represents Christmas tree growers, has teamed up with Scottsdale, Arizona-based conservation group Earth 911 to point consumers in the right direction with their trees. On their Web site, you can enter your zip code to find the nearest of 3,800-plus spots nationwide that accept old trees.

Low-Energy Lights

The newest energy-saving stars on the holiday scene are Christmas lights made with light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. First introduced in 2001, LEDs incorporate the same computer-chip technology used to light calculators and watches. The lights, which use semiconducting material rather than incandescent filaments, are 90 percent more efficient than traditional Christmas lights.

According to one U.S. Department of Energy study, if everyone replaced their conventional holiday light strings with LEDs, at least two billion kilowatt-hours of electricity could be saved in a month.

The savings would be enough to power 200,000 homes for a year, according to Littleton, Colorado-based Holiday Creations, which makes and distributes a popular line of LED light strings.

Karyn Atwood, Holiday Creations’ director of domestic and commercial sales, notes other added bonuses: The LEDs release little heat, and they last about 200,000 hours. In the unlikely event that one does burn out, she said, the rest of the lights keep on glowing.

LEDs offer more in the terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety, and minimal environmental impact than any other form of lighting. LEDs do hundreds of jobs and are found in thousands of devices. The rapid advancement of the technology has created an extremely prosperous environment for companies that manufacture, distribute, and design LED lighting. New products are steadily streaming on to store shelves creating success stories for thousands of companies jumping on the LED train.

As populations world-wide grow, so does the energy demand. Governments have reacted with initiative to increase efficiency and reduce consumption. This transition to LEDs as a part of the solution was made mainstream in part due to the Energy Policy Act of 2005. One of the major components of the act was to promote the advancement of solid state lighting. The US Secretary of Energy at the time was Dr. Samuel Bodman who noted that “a set of revolutionary new technologies called solid state lighting offer excellent prospects for meeting our future lighting needs in a less costly, more efficient way than today’s incandescent and even fluorescent fixtures.” Today, we have seen the conversion to LEDs in lighting applications have an immediate, significant impact on energy use. Nations looking for a plan quickly acknowledge LEDs as a simple method of meeting efficiency goals with the added advantages of greater safety and financial advantages over the status quo.

Here at LED Grow Master our sales have exponentially increased as much as 300% per year over the last 6 years. Other niche LED lighting companies have experienced similar growth. There is no time like the present to jump on the LED train. It’s green and moving at the speed of light. http://www.led-grow-master.com –AL

On occasion I’ve talked about a few pretty geeky fashions – EL Wire, integrated technology (the keyboard pants), conductive ribbon, etc. – but they’re almost nothing compared to an online show I found called FairytaleFashion.org!

We’re talking deep-thinking fashion here! In one episode the host (Diana Eng) talks about Miura-Ori Structures – a kind of folding that happens in nature (like with flowers so they can open up easily). In another, she presents a Drawdio (like a pencil with a speaker attached) which was invented by an MIT student and how it might react with conductive thread. Talk about taking fashion and technology to the next level! Forget simply plugging your iPod into your sweater!

And at the end of each episode she asks the viewer to think about how they would incorporate such technologies into clothing. Wow, I’m not sure I’m ready for that, but one of these days…

What is (arguably) more fun than painting onto clothes yet safer than sewing LEDs into the fabric? I

What is (arguably) more fun than painting onto clothes yet safer than sewing LEDs into the fabric? It’s EL Wire!!!

EL wire is a copper wire coated in a phosphor that glows when it’s hooked up to a battery – so it’s kind of like a thin, flexible neon light that doesn’t get hot. And, my favorite part, the light a continuous line unlike a string of LEDs.

You can simply sew it right onto your fabric, and you can often find it for only $1/foot. The only trouble is that you have to plan out your project before you order because you need a special box for the length of wire you’re using. The boxes tend to be about $3 each.

Check out these awesome projects I found for EL Wire:
- How to Add EL Wire to a Coat or Other Garment – A quick tutorial on how to use the stuff.
- ThatsCoolWire.com’s EL Wire Ideas – Sweet! I found some cool ones here including lighting on a bookshelf, decorative/safety lighting in a shower, and an awesome Tron costume!
- My Favorite – The Fire Skirt!!! – Now this is uber sweet! I would love to do this with an airbrushed dress. (Hehe, I could even add some smoke, and/or paint it to look like it’s a wood dress that’s burning.)
- Retrofit a Floppy Disk Bag – This would be a great bag for a laptop. Oops, almost forgot, this is just how to add the EL Wire. Here’s how to make the bag itself.
- A Baby Tron Costume – After you make Tron costumes for Mommy and Daddy, you just have to make one for little Version 2.0. Aw, what a cute little program.
- The Laser Bike for Night Riding – Oh if only I could get a law passed that required this. Then those poor night riders might have a chance against those big bad cars. Oh, and runners and pedestrians should wear it too.
- An Iron Man Arc Reactor – Okay, so this last one doesn’t use EL Wire, but man would it be even more awesome (and accurate) if they did!
