1896: Se considera como el nacimiento del cómic con la aparición de la primera tira cómica, The Yellow Kid creada por Richard Fenton Outcalt que además introdujo los “globitos” como recurso para que sus personajes se expresaran.

1929: Surge el primer intento de comercialización del cómic con Funnies No. 1, sin nada de éxito.

1930: Las tiras cómicas ganan popularidad, con personajes como Anita la Huerfanita, Popeye, Dick Tracy, antecesor indirecto del Cómic Negro y creado por Chester Gould, Flash Gordon de Alex Raymond y el más exitoso de todos, Tarzán, creación de Edgar Rice Burroughs.

  1931: Aparece por primera vez Superman en el fanzine Science Fiction: The Vanguard of Future Civilization #3, creación del escritor Jerry Siegel y el dibujante Joe Shuster. La idea les pareció buena pero no tuvieron éxito cuando trataron de comercializarla ya que las editoriales pensaban que un personaje tan poderoso no podría tener éxito.

1933: Famous Funnies es considerado el primer cómic. Fue una re-impresión de varias tiras cómicas, en formato de comic book.

1936: Se crea el primer superhéroe tal y como los conocemos, aunque irónicamente no tiene ningún poder sobrenatural. The Phantom dibujada por el artista Lee Falk, aparece como tira cómica en los diarios norteamericanos y cuenta la historia de un hombre que utiliza un disfraz púrpura y un antifaz para proteger su identidad y así poder combatir el crimen. Porta dos pistolas calibre .45 y monta un corcel blanco.

1937: Se lanza Detective Comics No 1, posteriormente la compañía toma las iniciales para crear DC Comics, una de las casas editoriales más importantes actualmente.

1938: El cómic comienza a tomar cada vez más importancia, pero es hasta que Joe Shuster y Jerry Siegel presentan en Action Comics #1 (junio de 1938) a Superman que nace la Época de Oro.

1939: El segundo superhéroe en cobrar importancia es Batman, creado por Bob Kane y presentado en mayo de 1939 en Detective Comics #27. Aparecen por primera vez juntos dos de los superhéroes más importantes de todos los tiempos, Batman y Superman, en la portada de New York Worlds Fair Comics #1, aunque nunca aparecieron en una misma historia hasta 1952. Se crea Timely Comics, que a la postre se convertiría en Marvel Comics, con el lanzamiento de La Antorcha Humana (no confundir con Johnny Storm) y Prince Namor: El Sub-Marinero.

1940: Para esta década el personaje más popular es Capitán Marvel (Shazam) cuya primera aparición se dio en Whiz Comics (Número 1 en portada y 2 en interiores), publicado por Fawcett Publications. Posteriormente DC obtiene los derechos y crea la revista Shazam! cuyo primer número corresponde a febrero de 1973.

1941: Se lanza el primer cómic con contenido bélico, haciendo aparición el superhéroe más patriótico de todos los tiempos, Capitán América, en Captain America #1 creación de Jack Kirby y Joe Simon. Otra inclusión importante es la de Wonder Woman de William Moulton Marston (creador del detector de mentiras).

1952: Aparece en Superman #76 la primera historia de Superman y Batman juntos escrita por Edmond Hamilton y dibujado por Curt Swan.

1954: El New York Worlds Fair Comics cambia su nombre a Worlds Finest Comics. En el #71 de dicha serie Superman y Batman aparecen en la portada y se incluye una historia de los superhéroes juntos. A partir de entonces la revista se dedica a publicar exclusivamente historias protagonizadas por Superman y Batman, y desde ese momento el dúo se conoce extraoficialmente como World´s Finest (Los Mejores del Mundo) y aparecen varios crossovers en sus respectivas publicaciones.

La década de los cincuentas fue difícil para el Noveno Arte, ya que la censura Mcarthista afectó a todos los géneros del cómic y, con la conjunción de diferentes circunstancias termina una de las mejores etapas del Arte Gráfico Secuencial. La Época de Oro termina, lamentablemente, con la publicación del libro Seduction of the Innocent del psiquiatra austriaco Frederick Wertham donde planteaba la teoría ultraconservadora anti-cómic de que éstos inducían a los jóvenes a cometer actos delictivos y atentaban contra la moral.

En consecuencia directa se crea el Comics Code Authority, un código para regir los contenidos de los comics donde queda estrictamente prohibido la aparición de temas sexuales, políticos o de violencia (de manera ilustrada o escrita) además también prohibía que personajes terroríficos aparecieran como protagonistas de comics. Por si no fuera poco, se crea The Comics Magazine Association of America, que regularizó los temas de varias revistas de terror, prohibiendo la aparición de sangre, tortura, vampiros, hombres lobo, lujuria, necrofagia, necrofilia, canibalismo, zombis y las palabras horror y terror.

1956: Durante los años subsecuentes a la creación del CCA, varias casas editoriales fracasan, desaparecen personajes importantes y las ventas bajan considerablemente. Es hasta que aparece Barry Allen, mejor conocido como Flash, que la industria da un nuevo respiro y nace oficialmente la Época de Plata del cómic. Otro acontecimiento importante es el lanzamiento de Fantastic Four el cual dio inicio a la denominada Era Marvel del Cómic. Marvel lanza personajes tan importantes como Spider-Man, X-Men y Daredevil entre otros.

Actualmente el Noveno Arte es uno de los movimientos más importantes, con gran número de personajes, corrientes, temas y autores renombrados. La industria del cómic ha evolucionado con el tiempo, convirtiéndose en uno de las formas de contar historias más populares, dedicando convenciones a nivel mundial, programas de radio, revistas especializadas, tiendas exclusivas y un largo etcétera.

Estamos en una época en donde el reimaginar a los personaje clásicos está a la orden del día, y al parecer ninguno está fuera de esta posibilidad. Recientemente, el canal SyFy lanzó a la red lo que es el primer trailer de la mini-serie El Fantasma, en donde nos encontramos que el Fantasma número 21, que era el que siempre habíamos conocido, es muerto por fin, y su hijo tiene que ser preparado para tomar el manto. Sin embargo, vemos aquí a un Fantasma urbano, fuera de la selva que le era tradicional, y con un vestuario modernizado. Quizá no sea muy del gusto de los puristas, pero esos, afortunada o desafortunadamente, son los menos.

One of my favorite songs has a line in it that goes….

“I am just a man, not super human.  Someone save me from the hate.”

The song later goes on to cry out “I need a hero to save me now! I need a hero! Save me now! I need a hero to save my life!”

The last few lines of the song are “Who’s gonna fight for what’s right? Who’s gonna help us survive? We’re in the fight of our lives! Who’s gonna fight for the weak? Who’s gonna make ‘em believe? I’ve got a hero! I’ve got a hero livin’ in me!”

One of the fun things about being a parent is watching our children enjoy the same things we enjoyed as children.  I have loved watching my 6 year old over the last couple of years discover superheroes.  Our house is filled with superheroes of all shapes and sizes.  We’ve got action figures, costumes, comic books (some of which are mine) video games, underwear, pajamas, shirts, bed spreads etc. etc. etc. of all the diffferent heroes.

Most American kids go through a superho phase, be it Batman or Powerpuff Girls.  And who can blame them?  Who can resist the draw of those cool, supernatural powers?  Who can resist someone who’s a winner every time?  Who can resist someone who defeats evil for the sake of good?  I know I can’t.  I love knowing for sure that in the world of superheroes, no matter how bad things look, Lex Luthor, The Penguin, and the Green Goblin will never prevail!  Victory belongs to the good guys.

Most historians will agree that Mandrake the Magician was the first super-powered, costumed crime fighter in comics.  Created by Lee Falk, Mandrake made his debut in 1934, approximately four years before Superman landed on Earth.  That is 75 years ago!  Throughout the subsequent years we have had countless variations on the superhero theme.  Everyone likes the idea of a superhero.  But the costumed heroes of film and book don’t exist in the real world.  We, as a society, like to label those ordinary people in our world who do extraordinary things as heroes.  The policeman and firefighters in your town and the members of our armed forces are so very deserving of that title.  They put their lives on the line everyday for you and me.

However, they are only preserving your physical health and well-being.  Long before Mandrake the Magician was ever conceived in the mind of Lee Falk a man walked this earth who came to save your soul.  He came to offer life eternal.  His name was Jesus Christ.  He didn’t come flying through the air wearing a cape or driving a fast car.  He came to earth in the most humble manner and later he gave his life so that we might live.  He came to fight for what we couldn’t win on our own.  Security and eternal life.  Eternal security.  Free from death and bondage to Hell.

Jesus Christ – no secret identity needed.  He is the ultimate super hero.

Creo que no era de mi de quien hablaban...

A menos de dos semanas de la muerte de Michael Jackson, ahora se dice que su fantasma ya se aparece en el rancho de Neverland.

Y es que en un video difundido por internet, del que hacen eco sitios como dailymail.co.uk, puede verse parte del hogar de Jackson y una sombra que atraviesa la escena.

El material apareció en el show televisivo de Larry King, en Estados Unidos, y ya registra miles de reproducciones en el portal de YouTube.

Luego de grabar de cerca el cerrojo de una puerta, en el video se abre la toma y puede verse un pasillo que va a dar a un salón al fondo, justo ahí es donde una sombra atraviesa el salón de manera rápida.

No obstante ni el camarógrafo ni Miko Brando, las personas que se encontraban en Neverland, notaron la sombra en el salón.

Mañana se realizará en el Staples Center de Los Ángeles el funeral de Jackson, fallecido el pasado 25 de junio.

Välkommen till Grafisk Söndag. En serie som kommer att handla om filmer som baseras på serietidningar och “grafiska noveller”. Det finns ju en hel del sådana och alla handlar inte ens om superhjältar. Dock kommer detta enbart att handla om spelfilmer. Så jag bortser från animerade filmer den här gången. Jag är inte alltid så insatt men gör så gott jag kan

Den här söndagen beger vi oss till Afrika. Mer bestämt till Bengali där en ensam man har kämpat mot ondskan i mer än 400 år. Just det, den här veckan tittar vi på och läser lite om Fantomen.

Serien då?

1936 tog den trikåklädde Fantomen sina första stapplande steg  in i djungeln med hjälp av Lee Falk.
Från början hade Falk helt andra planer för Fantomen. Han skulle egentligen vara en rik playboy vid namn Jimmy Wells som på natten klädde ut sig och bekämpade brott. Detta var några år innan Läderlappen och Stålmannen hade kommit ut. Men ganska snabbt bestämde sig Lee för att förflytta ut Fantomen till djungeln. Han var starkt inspirerad av Rudyard Kiplings bok Djungelboken och hedrade denne genom att döpa pygméstammarna i Fantomen för Bandars efter apstammen som är vänner med Mowgli.

Fantomen huserar i det fiktiva afrikanska landet Bengali. Där fungerar han som landets ständige beskyddare och har gjort så sedan 1536. Men vänta lite, skulle inte detta innebära att Fantomen skulle vara över fyra hundra år gammal? Jo, det är helt rätt. Men hemligheten bakom mannen som inte kan dö är att olika män under olika årtionde/århundraden klätt på sig den lila trikån. Det hela började med en ung sjöman vid namn Christopher Walker som strandade på Bengalis strand. Han var den enda överlevande efter att de horribla Singhpiraterna attackerat skeppet han var på. Efter att ha vandrat en stund längs stranden fann han kroppen efter den pirat som mördade hans far (som också var på skeppet). Det var då han bestämde sig. Han svor en ed att hans liv skulle tillägnas att hindra sjöröveri, girighet, grymhet och orättvisa. Samt att hans söner och deras söner kommer att efterträda honom.

Fantomen har alltså hängt med ett bra tag. Vilket innebär att han har fått rykte om sig att han inte kan dö. Landets invånare refererar honom som Den vandrande vålnaden. Så fort det händer något otyg i Landet så skickas signaler till Fantomen via djungeltrummor. Meddelandet kommer då fram till Guran, som mer eller mindre fungerar som Fantomens sekreterare.  Sen inom kort dyker Fantomen upp med sin häst Hero och sin varg Devil.

Jag var inte så jätteförtjust i Fantomen förr. Men på senare år har jag börjat uppskatta historierna. För det är fantastiska äventyrsberättelser som förekommer i tidningarna. Jag älskar alla de olika djungelordspråken som huserar i dem. ”Fantomen är hård mot de hårda” eller ”När Fantomen rör sig står blixten stilla”. Det är lite som Chuck Norris…

En annan intressant sak med Fantomen är hans dräkt. I diverse länder fick dräkten olika färger. I Sverige är den blå medan den i USA är lila. Detta fick många att hajja till när serien senare filmatiserades. För vi var ju inte vana vid en lila dräkt!

Filmen då?

Filmen om Fantomen kom 1996 och vi fick se Billy Zane i huvudrollen. Jag har väl egentligen inte mycket att säga om den här filmen då den mest kändes som en usel Indiana Joneskopia. Fast istället för piska och hatt så springer huvudkaraktären runt i djungeln med lila kroppsstrumpa och två pickadoller.  Men till skillnad från många andra filmer som är baserade på serier som är mörka och dystra. Så är Fantomen mer eller mindre en solskenshistoria med humor.

Det är väl egentligen inte en dålig film. Det är fel att säga, för den är humoristisk och gjordes nog med hjärtat på rätta stället. Storyn är baserad av Lee Falks tidiga historier och vi får ta del av hur Fantomen skapades. Vi träffar även på Diane Palmer – kvinnan som Fantomen faktiskt gifter sig med i serien. Billy Zane är i filmen den tjugoförste Fantomen i ledet och trots att han egentligen inte är någon höjdarskådis så är han absolut godkänd här.

Storyn handlar om hur en rik affärsmagnat vid namn Xander Drax är ute efter något som kallas för The Skulls of Touganda. Vilket är ett magiskt kranium som gör att ägaren till den får makten över hela världen. Givetvis finns den skallen i Bengali och Fantomen är den enda som kan stoppa skurken. Vid Xanders sida finner vi även ett gäng kvinnor som är luftpirater. Ledaren spelas av Catherine Zeta Jones och det är när vi första gången träffar henne som filmen når sin klimax.

Just den scenen är så otroligt rolig. Eller så är det kanske bara jag som tycker det. Men de befinner sig på en båt då Fantomen galant gör sin entré. Då han ser vilket kön som besättningen har utbrister han: ”Wooo, A ship full of women”. Detta låter inte så kul i skriftlig form. Men jag skrattar så jag dör varje gång jag ser det.

Så för att vara en rätt löjlig film, så är den rolig och faktiskt värd att se om man inte sett den. Kanske kommer du gilla den. Annars kan du ju vänta på den nya filmen som kommer om ett tag. Den lär se ut som alla andra superhjältefilmer gör nu för tiden. Mörk, hård och med en hjälte som ingen förstår…

This is a retelling of the first Phantom’s origin story. I’ve never read anything Phantom, nor do I know anything of him which makes this a great thing for me and anyone else who have missed out.

This is basically the beginning of a new maxi series Moonstone’s putting out this month involving tales from all the Phantoms, each involving different talent. That series is called The Phantom Generations.

The Phantom is old and I don’t like a lot of old things when it comes to comics. But I’m a sucker for previews with nice covers, so it ended up in my collection, finally to be read.

I don’t like the art, but I like how it has an old look and feel to it. If I was a Phantom fan, I’d probably appreciate that more, but it’s decent nonetheless. The writing is a little odd and sometimes seems a little inconsistent in terms of keeping the exposition in character. It seems to fall out every now-and-then.

Aside from the story, we get some pages out of the new Phantom Handbook which remind me exactly of those old comic book character cards, but with more information. The sample pages include The 21st Phantom, Diana Palmer-Walker, Guran, Chane, Devil, Hero, and Kamil Kazi.

I’m not sure if I’ll continue on with this. The idea of Generations appeals to me, I tend to like one-off works like that showcasing various talent, but I might not like it much not being an existing fan. I’ll have to think it over more before investing any more into it.

The Ghost Who Walks – Never Dies!

This news that Hermes Press would be reprinting The Phantom Newspaper Strips in their entirety from 1936-1994 was originally reported at the end of February, but I wanted to take a moment to remind readers to keep it on their radar for release in September ‘09 because this is just really cool.  “The Ghost Who Walks” is one of the coolest characters to grace the funny pages and I’m really looking forward to reading so much of the material that I’ve never had the chance to lay eyes on, until now.

Here’s the official statement from Hermes Press:

The first, original, and best masked hero to ever grace the pages of comic strips and comic books returns with Hermes Press’ new complete reprint of The Phantom. Referred to by comic strip historian Maurice Horn as the “granddaddy of all costumed superheroes,” The Phantom was created in 1936 by Lee Falk with artwork by Ray Moore. The strip hit the funny pages of newspapers well before the Dark Knight or Superman made their first appearances and has been acknowledged as an influence on every “masked man of mystery” since. The Phantom set the standard for action, adventure, intrigue, and romance in adventure comic strips and comic books – it has frequently been copied but never equaled. Now, Hermes Press will offer the entire run of the comic strip beginning in September, 2009 and which will span over sixty years of The Phantom legend, ending with artist Sy Barry’s run on the strip in 1994. The Phantom has been brought to the screen twice before.  In a serial produced in 1943 by Columbia pictures with Tom Tyler in the title role:

Ryan Carnes has been cast in the title role of  Sci-Fi Channel’s The Phantom.  Carnes is best known to sci-fi fans for his turn as Laszlo in the Doctor Who two-parter “Daleks in Manhattan” and “Evolution of the Daleks”:

What do you think of this casting and the new costume?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sci-Fi channel has greenlit three miniseries, as back door pilots.  They will be produced by RHI entertainment.

They include a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, a new take on Lee Falk’s classic comic strip The Phantom, and an adaptation of Philip Jose Farmer’s popular Riverworld books.

Sci Fi Channel executive vp original programming Mark Stern pointed out that weaknesses in the original “Alice” story, which often was more about the passing scenery than character development, allow for more leeway and modernization than most fantasy tales.

“Lewis Carroll was more concerned about politics and satire then telling a mythological story,” Stern said. “You’re not really engaged with Alice in a proactive and emotionally fulfilling way.”

“Phantom” has been adapted a few times without much success, but Halmi said the previous stumbles are a good reason to try again.

“That there hasn’t been a successful ‘Phantom’ leaves the door wide open for us, since nobody has made it their own yet,” Halmi said.

Sci Fi appreciates that the crusader doesn’t have superpowers and is more in the grounded vein of Iron Man and Batman. “It’s not a guy in purple tights,” Stern said.

“Riverworld” could have the most series potential if producers pull off the novel’s tricky combination mixing a modern protagonist with reborn historical figures.

” ‘Riverworld’ has a little bit of everybody’s’ idea of heaven and everybody’s hell,” Halmi said of the setting.

Characters in the story’s world will be portrayed by actors in their 20s, so somebody like Napoleon wouldn’t be “a balding man with his hand in his coat.”

“Part of the fun of this is the reveal of who each character is,” Stern said.

Sci-Fi Channel productions are a bit hit and miss.  And it’s unclear from the article if the current Riverworld has anything to do with the Sci-Fi Channels ‘03 adaptation of the novel, or if it’s an entirely new take.

As comics gained credibility trough the early 30’s the stories typically catered to super-heroes.

In 1938 Captain America surpassed Time and Newsweek monthly, selling more than 2 million copies per month. World War II saw comic characters pitching in on the war effort, fighting Natzi forces and Pacific war fleets. Captain America’s first issue cover depicted him punching Adolf Hitler in the face. The issue came before the March start of the war, appearing on news stands in February. As the war subsided so did comic book sales due to an over saturation of comic characters and their political motivations. Stories and characters with more relative feelings to the average person started to increase comic versatility. Creating a new field, for comic strips to extend into comic books. Walt Disney’s animal characters had fun with daily activities staged around the house. They eventually climbed into full action cinematic features.

Publisher’s in 1948 felt desperate to revitalize their profits and searched smaller publishers for content. Lev Gleason had a small selection of publishing’s most notable “Daredevil Comics” and “Crime Does Not Pay.” “Crime Does Not Pay” was subtitled “All True Crimes,” adding to it’s notoriety. The success of the title took five years to hit mainstream audiences. Paving the way for a whole comic book, crime genre which flourished while raising the profits in the comic sector. The illustrations were graphically gruesome depicting murderous actions committed by true criminals. People being dismembered and tortured were mainstays in the crime genre.

The graphic images bled through to the female detective genres. Later to be known as “good girl art” they were full of detailed pictures scantily dressed, large breasted, sexually empowered women. The audience was merely young and maturing males who wanted non-censored comics with the coinciding images. The myth is that a young child was caught by his mother, reading a crime comic with a large breasted woman. The father who was a senator, was informed and convened a panel to study the effects of comics on the American public.

Comics began to sell faster than ever based around EC’s horror creations. Their second to last issue had a story titled “From the Crypt of Terror” which subsequently sparked horror titles most notably, “Tales from the Crypt.” Publisher’s could not get enough horror titles onto book shelves fast enough. The public devoured every related title and the market became saturated with a lot of good and bad comics. Much like the comic strip frenzy in the turn of the century or the super hero bonanza in the pre-golden ages.

The eradication of comics became tops of the American senate’s agenda. Brought on by the outcry of sensitive parents and a report from the Juvenile Delinquency agency which related comics to youth crimes. Frederic Wertham, a psychologist published an article in reader’s digest directly stating that comics were degrading American youth, making grades drop, young men rob, rap kill and do drugs.

The fallout from the dark cloud surrounding comic books, put a crippling effect on the field. The day of the comic hero and the frolicking child had been overshadowed by the new comic genres.
