Toate merita ascultate.

If any of you have had the privilege of sleeping through enjoying one of my musical mixes in the last few years, you are probably aware of the fondness I have for Lee Hazlewood. Best known for his work during the 60’s with Nancy Sinatra, including the hit “These Boots are Made for Walking,” Hazlewood’s storytelling abilities and his baritone voice gained him cult status and caused his records to be rereleased on the Smells Like Records label in the late 90’s.

This album really is as good as we paint it.

BOBBY GENTRY
Way Down South
(Music For Pleasure, 1968)
One of THE classic charity store records, alongside the ubiquitous electronic sound samplers and Top Of The Pops compilations, Zorba The Greek, anything by Leo Sayer, anything by The Bee Gees, Frampton Comes Alive and Supertramp’s Crime Of The Century… but this is a great record nonetheless. Classy inner sleeve too: a gem of a MFP advert, something for everyone, all the sleeves done and dusted: children’s favourites, Maurice Chevalier, Dean Martin, Russ Conway and The Sound Of Music. You have to love Bobbie, that just rolled out of bed voice, “Ode To Billy Joe”, the fact she wasn’t Cilla, the easy Southern country good time feeling so beloved of all those dustily familiar early 70s films starring Kris Kristofferson on a fast road to nowhere, with all the background noise brought up to full. Way Down South is composed of exactly the sort of songs all those light entertainment variety show singers would sing so slickly and with such insincerity, yet Bobbie had soul. She also had “fragrance and molasses” according to the rather wired sleeve notes, but this was the 60s and everyone did want to write like Lee Hazelwood on the back of Nancy And Lee so we’ll forgive them this one minor indiscretion. Way Down South is probably Bobby’s finest album, or at least the most widely available… which often amounts to the same thing, right? She sounds so natural and unforced, and the whole caboodle begins with “Okolona River Bottom Band” that features a trombone as slinky as any tightly wound metal tumbling-down-stairs children’s toy that underpins Bobby’s gently sexy drawl in a way that is a pure delight to hear. If television was half as salacious as Bobbie crooning through “Mornin’ Glory”, the listener only just having regained consciousness, then it would have been banned in all Western countries a couple of days ago. The photo of Bobby on the sleeve sums her appeal up: floppy hat, false eyelashes, elasticated pants, bare belly button. We’re inalienably reminded of the sun mooching its way across the Golden Gate Bridge in the sticky afternoon.

Cost £2, bargain value 8, inner sleeve 4

The last 2 days have been just a little taxing, to say the least. I am sitting here typing this out

The last 2 days have been just a little taxing, to say the least. I am sitting here typing this out and I have nothing in the tank to be able to sleep. That’s how it is when you have a lot of real estate, infrastructure-wise, height-wise; get it?

Earlier today, yesterday for you sticklers, I heard this melodious tune featuring the one and only Shirley Bassey, who originally sang the theme song for that scintillating James Bond flick, Goldfinger, with that sex machine in black leather Honor Blackman playing Pussy Galore. Even as a kid, I knew I “wanted” her. Anyway, getting back to the singer, what’s-her-name…. she did a couple of numbers on some albums by a German duo called Yello back in the 80s. It was interesting stuff…

What a voice! I bet she’s great at karaoke.

Where was I? Oh, yea. These last two days, no, three, have been gruelling. Is that spelled right? I am ragged. ‘Had to face some major deepset fears and create an area in my life that I’ve had no previous experience with at all. I came through it all right but it’s taken its toll -probably be up all night and I don’t care. So much for normalizing my system, organizing my life. What I need over here right now is a little sex machine of my own to take edge off …

My body aches and I’ve no booze to take the edge off. Have I said that already? Ok, it’s a big edge. It’s a chasm of fatigue. I had virtually nothing to eat today and should not have let my schedule be so knocked off as it was. Discipline, my friend, discipline. It was a simple female trick to get attention and I fell for it, resulting in a long phone call discussing something I haven’t even thought about in 2 weeks. Dames: they’re all the same……I could use a couple of colds ones right now: Beers, I mean, not dead dames.

I remember hearing this song on the car radio down in the ‘States

when my parents would cram us 4 youngest kids in a station wagon along with a ton of gear plus a crappy old house trailer ostensibly on a vacation but really was just a Scream-and-Crying-Jag contest away from home. 8 to 10 hours spent crammed into a station wagon en route to a distant shore on a distant road – often an American turnpike – synonymous for no scenery worth looking at. It was a good place to be high and carefree, not sweltering in a car reading comics, watching my sisters play cat’s cradle of which there seemed to an unlimited number of permuatations, or listening to my dad scream at my mom when they missed the cut-off.

Anyway, sometimes Summer Wine would come on and I just locked in on it. Their voices voices and the combo work well with the cowboy them – and it is Spring, so its perfect. At the time, though, I always remembered it because the guy’s voice was so distinctive.

Before the Internet, locating a Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra duet album was impossible. While down in South Carolina or Pennslyvania at a KOA campground (actually no, they were too expensive + boring, being out in the open instead of being in a more wooded area) or when we wasn’t getting eating alive by the mosquitos, the family would drop into a one of the gargantuan malls. I’d peel off and find a record shop and making my inquires. They’d all uniformly smile wistfully and shake their heads ‘No,’ they hadn’t seen any of those in years: “Hard to find,” they’d say.

Other times, in out-of-the way places, I’d hear this tune and I always remembered where I was when I heard it again. The melodies are haunting and so alike the overcast day that the song refers to:

I am simply too tired to write anything meaningful right now but I did negotiate a contract yesterday and today which was a highly stressful experience – for me. Initially, I was going charge too little – initially, but then I remembered how long it took to do it last time for someone else so my price almost doubled. Surprise, surprise, the client said my pricing was ‘ok’ so I am on the right track….

Why so stressful? Because I got the antithesis of training for anything resembling negotiating in the Scream-a-Thon Chamber from whence I was weened. What I learned, what we all learned, was black and white thinking, conditioned responses, “Do it now, my way, or else,” “I’m not interested in your thoughts, this is my house, I bought it you just so you could wreck it, you and the rest of the saboteurs.” Yes, my dad called us saboteurs. It would have been funny except he was serious.

When this song came out in the 60s, related to it in a most immediate way. This video has acid trip written all over it; then again, when I was in Grade 2, the whole school got to watch this crazy, Alice in Wonderland-esque, Walt Disney film that featured chess pieces coming alive cartoon-style. On a big 6 foot screen when I was a little kid, with my imagination, I was half fascinated / half freaked out. I’ve been searching for it ever since.

I lived where this guy was going – the funny farm – only I couldn’t get my hands on any good pills or shock therapy so that i could forget.

The passenger that came packaged with the endless browbeating, name calling, crushing insults, humiliation, and ritualized brutality, was the development of mindlessness, meaning when a situation requiring negotiation arose, all that registered in my mind was …..a blank because it had never been modeled for me. It’s taken until now to even start to get the hang of it, even though the fellow loved the tagline I made up for Rusty’s Bait Shop.

Oh well, that ordeal is over and the project has now begun so I’ll unfurl the process and come up with something catchy, as per usual.

Ciao for now

He’s the soft spoken (only when you first meet him….) singer/songwriter from New York City who will charm you song after song. He’s really a fun guy to be around who I can seriously talk baseball with for hours (well more talk larry wayne and the braves to be precise). You can see his personality through his music and the fact that he included Chumbawamba in his playlist makes him one of my favs! You can hear him through his recently released EP, The Arrival, which can be purchased through iTunes or CDBaby! Also, if you are in the NYC area go check him out! Check David’s MYSPACE for more upcoming shows!!

“We’ll remember good lies when they live in a room with us, use our kitchen table and our little beds.”

There are two types of songs on this album. About half the album is made of fairly simple, straighforward songs about melancholy and regret that lament things like staying for the wrong reasons and lying to ourselves to get by. These songs are carried by the smallness of Markus Acher’s voice, which lends a sweetness to the sorrow, as if taking a bit of solace or even joy in the humanity of regret. The rest of the songs are built around slightly dissonant, repetitive melodic patterns washed out by complex, unsettling percussion and trembling strings. These songs are darker and more foreboding, but again anchored by the simplicity of Acher’s delivery. There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but with this exception of the title track, the album is quite consistent and occasionally touching, and works out a few interesting ideas with some success.

19. The Dodos – Visiter (Buy It)

Highlight: “Fools” (Download)

And he thinks in his mind that he’s just getting by, but he’s a compromise, he’s just a compromising fool

Yeah, I guess I’ll let this slide into the top 20. My enthusiasm for this album has waned since the beginning of the year, but the second half especially is still a lot of fun – rapid guitar strumming and erratic (though sometimes imprecise) percussion make for a pulse quickening, nerdy (sometimes to the point of awkwardness), quizzical good time.

King Khan’s set at the Bottom Lounge after the first night of this summer’s Pitchfork Music Festival was definitively the best small-venue show I saw all year. Backed by the blaring horns of the Shrines and a cast of characters ranging from cheerleaders to afroed cross-dressers, Khan’s accelerated throwbacks to vintage garage rock and soul had everyone at the Lounge twisting and shouting. Sweating profusing, yelping, stuttering, and eventually taking off his pants, Khan whipped the crowd into a frothy madness as all hell broke lose on stage.

The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines captures all the jittery energy of the live show with a compilation of the swarthiest, tightest, most jolting hits of King Khan’s career. These are songs that would be at home on the Nuggets collection of “Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era,” dated to the present only by the lyrical bluntness of songs like “Took My Lady to Dinner” (“My babies fat, she’s ugly, she’s fat and she’s ugly, but I love her”), “I Wanna Be a Girl,” and the Shrine’s love song about welfare, “Welfare Bread.” If you’re missing the days when vintage garage rock was still played in garages, King Khan and the Shrines have what you need.

Hey, say what? What? I’m gonna do it! What’s that? Hands up! Shake shake shake shake shake shake shake shake shake shake shake shake shake!

Many of the tracks on Workout Holiday have been around for a couple of years now in a variety of formats. Readers of my old blog may recall that I listed the opening track, “Let’s Talk About It,” as one of my favorite songs of 2006. This year alone, White Denim released three slightly different versions of their debut album under different titles. All of this suggests some difficulty arranging a somewhat diverse set of material into a single album: Workout Holiday’s biggest flaw is that it doesn’t fit together very well as a whole. At the same time, it’s clear that White Denim has taken its time building up a body of quality works, and track after track proves this band has talent.

The majority of the songs on Workout Holiday evince a fast paced, riff based garage style with hints of psychedelia and a spastic quality that seems drawn from punk. But unlike King Khan’s deliberately vintage sound, White Denim sounds like it came from this side of the 80’s. I hear hints of Devo on several tracks, a certain stilted quality that adds tension by stopping up the rush of energy. While most of these songs are blunt and to the point, though, some of the directness is broken up by meandering tracks like “Sitting” and “Don’t Look At Me That Way” or bluesier pieces like “IEIEI.”

16. Beck – Modern Guilt (Buy It)

Come a little gamma ray / standing in a hurricane / Your brains are bored like a refugee from the houses burning / And the heat wave’s calling your name

I haven’t enjoyed a Beck album this much in a decade. There’s not a track on here that lacks a spark or fails to stand up on its own. Shying away from the stuttering funk that defined Odelay and Guero, Modern Guilt veers closer to the 60’s psychedlia of Mutations (where album closer “Volcanos” would fit right in), adding a more driving beat on about half of the tracks that places them into more of a rock idiom. “Orphans” recalls “Tomorrow Never Knows,” Chemtrails feels like it could cozy up next to Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra’s “Some Velvet Morning,” while Gamma Ray’s bass line would fit right in with the Standells or the Count Five. DJ Dangermouse’s production is seemless – while he does add in an occasional glitchy sample that sounds like it was made by a machine (listen to the verse of the title track, for example) even these samples usually blend right into the psychadelia. The two exceptions are “Youthless” and “Replica,” where the percussion is foregrounded to create more modern sounding beats.
