The following can hardly be called news, but it is something I personally wished for the Zelda-serie

The following can hardly be called news, but it is something I personally wished for the Zelda-series to feature since forever. That is, a Link that can fly in the sky. Now, we´re far from being able to confirm anything, and as I said, it´s much more speculation than factual news, but it is a glimmer of hope. Here is what Eiji Aonuma, producer at Nintendo of Japan, told the British magazine The Guardian:

“I have an eight-year-old son myself at home, and quite recently he started playing The Phantom Hourglass for DS, because when the software first hit the market he was too young. When he started playing with the boat, I told him: ‘In the next Zelda, you are going to be able to ride on the train.’ He answered: ‘OK, Dad, first boat, and then train? Surely next time, Link is going to fly in the sky … ‘”Aonuma pauses, grinning. “I just don’t know. If many people make many speculations … some of them might be correct. Right now, I have to refrain from commenting on anything.”

There we have it, Aonuma mentioning a flying Link and making all of it even more mystic by adding a pause, followed by a grin. How likely is it, though, to have a flying Link in Legend of Zelda Wii? Something supporting that is the fact that Zelda Wii seems to take a serious look at WiiSports Resort. Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma both talked about how gamers should think of WiiSports Resort if they´d like to get an impression of how sword fighting and bow-shooting is going to be like. There´s one discipline in said title that has you flying. Coincidence? Most likely, but it is not as if Nintendo doesn´t have any experience with air-gameplay. And to be more specific, WiiSports Resort is the game that made flying through the air to feel the most believable of all games I´ve ever played.

Aonuma also confirms that there´d be sword fighting in the next Zelda-games, which wasn´t that clear after the artwork was released, showing Link without a sword. There have been people thinking that there´d be a problem due to MotionPlus, which needs to be recalibrated all the time, which is why Link would only have s word at certain times. With Aonuma´s words backing up sword fighting, it´s likely that Link can use the sword at all times the player wants to. Giving it some more thought, the “Point at screen and press the A-button” that has to be done in WiiSports Resort, could be solved by the “master sword girl“, the girl on the artwork that looks like a humanized master sword. Instead of having your sword instantly ready in all past Zelda-games, in this new Wii-Zelda you´d simply have to point to the girl, which then transforms into the sword. It´s basically a form of unsheathing the sword manually, instead of it being done automatically. That way you´d have your sword all the time, but the possible problems due to MotionPlus would be solved.

What question remains is: How would Link fly?

There are many different approaches, but one can try to evaluate each´s probability. There´s the most direct option, a Link that can fly by himself. Maybe growing angel-like wings by using an item. I find this to be less likely, as that would be a very powerful ability and as much as I´d like it, it doesn´t fit past Zelda-games. Link was never “cool”, so giving him shiny angel-wings…rather not. Then there´s the possibility of him having some kind of mechanical device. A glider would fit into the medieval theme of the Zelda-series. A balloon could also work, but doesn´t sound like fun. Again, on the “cool” side of ideas he could have some kind of rocket boots that are run by steam. If anything, a glider sounds most likely. What is most likely at all, though, is some kind of animal that lets Link ride on itself. First thing that comes to mind is Epona, with wings. Basically, Epona turns into a Pegasus. What makes me doubt that option are the controls of Epona in former Zelda-titles. Nintendo wants to give the player as much control as possible, which in return made some people complain about Epona being to stiff, to unnatural. On ground that is no problem. But now try to imagine flying around at the sky with Epona, and then landing on the ground. In my mind, once you touch the ground there will be clipping errors, a framerate hickup and what not else, due to the horse controls being to stiff. And I wouldn´t want to have an automatic landing sequence, either. Which brings us to another animal that many Zelda-fans wouldn´t hate to see: A dragon. Ever since I read the Ocarina of Time-manga I long for Link to have a cute dragon by his side that, once grown up, lets him ride on itself. Imagine a smaller version of Volvagia. In terms of gameplay that could be perfect. The way Volvagia moves with its snake-like body negates all possible stiff movements, and thanks to the fact that Volvagia doesn´t have such an emphasis on its legs, once you approach the ground in order to land, it would simply slow down until your deep enough to get off its back. What I´m trying to say: Yeah, a dragon, please, Nintendo!

After all is said, there is no guarantee for anything of the above to happen. Some fans might remember an old interview Aonuma had with German GamePro prior to Twilight Princess´ release. The way he talked about the character´s options of movement made it seem as if he´d get to fly in that game. We all know that didn´t turn out to be exactly that way, except you consider being shot around by cannons “flying“. Nonetheless, with so few information and so much demand of discussion, a little speculation about a flying Link can´t be wrong. I´d like to see that happen. What about you?

by – ‘Tiger’ Oliver

Seeing as National Turkey Genocide Day is in just a few short days, I’ve been thinking of things that I’m thankful for.

And, seeing as I’m an O’Colly Gamer, video games topped the list; edging out my closest friend, family, good drinks and the feeling you get when you tear a piece of paper out of a notebook perfectly along the perforated line. Oh, and when you eat at a Chinese buffet after not eating in 16 hours.

Anywho, I think it’s time to take a look at a few of among tens-to-hundreds of games I’m thankful for playing this year:

Conker: Live & Reloaded (XBox – Rated Mature)

By far the best looking Nintendo 64 game revamped for the original XBox. Trust me, the graphics are so amazing that you’ll think it’s an XBox 360 game, even given the fact that it only plays in 4:3 aspect ratio. A remastered game track, reconstructed multiplayer and the classic Bad Fur Day relatively untouched makes this game a definite play for platformer fans. Just don’t let the kiddies play this game, it ain’t rated M for nothing.

Saw (XBox 360, PlayStation 3 & Windows – Rated Mature)

I’m thankful for this game because it reminds me of how such a promising game can be so damn disappointing.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Saw as much as the next guy, but this game is horrible. It plays horrible, the graphics are horrible, the music’s horrible for the fact that it gets annoying as all get out after you listen to it for so long. It’s kind of like the movie, the storyline is the only thing that saves the game for me. But not enough to make me play it again.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo, Wii Virtual Console & Game Boy Advance)

After not having played this game for over eight years on a Super Nintendo, I’m reminded of the timelessness of such game series like the Zelda franchise. Very few games these days have that timelessness, and even fewer capitalize on it through a sequel.

Guitar Hero/Rock Band (Multiple Platforms)

Because, SRSLY, where else will you be able to fulfill your rock star fantasy without the risk of drug addiction and STD’s?

Trog! (NES & Arcade)

What can I say, it makes me nostalgic.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (All major consoles, handhelds, mobile phones, Mac OS & PC)

When a franchise releases one of the best games of that year and, quite possibly, of this generation, it’s no small matter. When that franchise is Star Wars, you know it’s a hell of a game.

Left 4 Dead (PC, XBox 360)

Hundreds upon thousands of zombies coming at you, a seemingly endless supply of ammunition, a gun toting maniac and a hot chick who knows how to multitask with annihilating the undead horde whilst looking innocently sexy – if Left 4 Dead 2 is any better than this, then I’ll have no problem selling off all my Rock Band controllers just to get my hand on it.

And last, but certainly not least:

Tetris (You name it, it probably has a port of it)

You can have all the legions of enemies breathing down your neck, the high-definition graphics, orchestrated soundtrack by the biggest names in music and awesome state-of-the-art technology made exclusively for your game. Tetris will still pwn you and have enough in its tank for another million rounds. The best thing to come out of Russia since vodka still has what it takes to this day.

Besides, who doesn’t remember how they felt the first time they cleared four lines at the same time?

What are some of the things your thankful for? Better yet, some of the games you’re thankful for playing, good or bad?

Nintendo Magazine spoke with the main director of the previous Legend of Zelda titles, Eiji Aonuma, and confirms Nintendo has some surprises in store for E3 2010. Aonuma hints at Link’s new direction and expresses his view on the franchise facelift. “It is something we used to talk about with Mr Miyamoto,…he and I agree that if we are following the same structure again and again, we might not be able to give long time Zelda fans a fresh surprise,” says Aonuma. Miyamoto and Aonuma confirm Wii Motion plus support for the new Zelda title and look forward to showing the game this May.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks sets hero Link on a daring new adventure. The game provides players with a new story, more puzzles and even a new mode of transportation. In this game, Link voyages by train, which offers up new possibilities for problem-solving. Link has a valuable new companion. While navigating dungeons, he’s accompanied by a Phantom, a hulking suit of armor that responds to his commands. Players can tap the Phantom to take command of him, then draw a line on the touch screen to direct him where to go. The stout Phantom can walk through fire or lava, be used as a platform to carry Link above dangers, or even run interference to block Link from harm.

Preorders ship on December 23, 2009 and all reservations will include a bonus clear feather-shaped stylus that’s packaged in a green gem-shaped case.

Hello all of you on the internet, I would like to voice my opinion on an important topic: Legend of Zelda. I have heard people complain about games that are just a bunch of fetch quests, but at the same time, these people are huge fans of the Legend of Zelda games.

It is true that I have not played many Zelda games, or beaten any of them, but what I have played is running around, doing chores for people. I got incredibly frustrated, and gave up on Twilight Princess when the store clerk told me to herd her cat! That is an expression for something frustrating, and prolonged, but I mean this in a literal sense. When I told my friend John this the next day, he told me that I didn’t understand, and that I needed to go fishing!

I will admit that I have had fun with one Zelda game, however, it is the Gameboy Advance game, The Minish Cap, which I have been told was the worst Zelda game. I would disagree, as it is the one where you don’t go on fetch quests, but instead an adventure game. In minish cap, you

GeekBaby was Link (Ocarina of Time young version) for Halloween.

I had a lot of fun planning and making this costume, although it was a last minute job. Originally I wanted to dress him as the Companion Cube and I would dress as Chell from the Orange Box. Mike would have gotten a crowbar and gone as Gordon Freeman. But my costume ended up being too much work, so I changed my mind at the last minute and had to think of something else.

I made this costume in the week leading up to Halloween, and reused as much material as I could find. Excepting the paint, his wee sword and shield are all scavenged from things around the house. I made the tunic and hat the afternoon of Halloween. The tunic was almost too small, but worked much better than I anticipated. I didn’t hem anything, so it’s just the 4 seams and a slit cut in the front for the collar. I’m especially proud of the hat. Total cost was about $20, for fabric, thread, cotton belting, buckle, and painting supplies, but it’s much more awesome than what you’d get for that price in a store!

He loves charging with his toy Master Sword. I took this picture, and he charged me. We took him to his grandparent’s house, and he charged Big Daddy down like a pro!

Close up of the Shield of Hyrule. It’s made of black foam core, spray painted silver, and the colors are done with model enamels. I free handed all the drawing, and it turned out really well! I attached it to the tunic with a big safety pin stuck to the back of the shield with some packing tape.

Close up of the Master Sword. It’s cut out of black foam core and painted. The hilt was wrapped with some shelf liner scraps and then wrapped in blue duct tape.

If you checked out this post this past summer, then you’ve already seen the trailer for the upcoming Legend of Zelda game for the Nintendo DS. Entitled ‘Spirit Tracks’, its development and release were very hush-hush. But fortunately, Nintendo has thrown away the veil and given out some more details on the hotly-anticipated adventure!

In my humble opinion, the most interesting new piece of information is definitely the player’s ability to control the eponymous Princess Zelda, who is transformed into a Spirit and can use her new powers to control some of the villains Link faces. It’s a very cool addition to the plot and should add a new twist to the franchise.

You can watch an updated trailer here to see what ’s being brought to the newly revised land of Hyrule.

And if you’re really itching for the new game, we might be able to tide you over with a pretty decent selection of figures and toys from The Legend of Zelda section of CmdStore.com.

And for those just looking to get their hands on some of the previous LoZ adventures or pre-order the new one, Amazon.com’s got what you need.

After launching a new Zelda title with the Nintendo Wii console, Link fans have been eagerly awaiting for the Twilight Princess follow-up the past three years. With Nintendo planning on releasing a new Mario and Metroid going into 2010, we’re all expecting the company to launch the rumored Zelda title; completing the holy trinity. Unfortunately, President and COO of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime states Nintendo hasn’t “committed to Zelda for 2010,” according to GameTrailers TV. It’s cool, Project M and Super Mario Galaxy will hold us down till 2011. Don’t you think?

Today I beat Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the first time. I was motivated after seeing that recent trailer for Spirit Tracks the other day. This was actually my second attempt at beating the game, but it stopped at the same place: right before the last time entering the Temple of the Ocean King, aka that place that you have to go through TEN MILLION TIMES and it doesn’t change at all. Although I have yet to 100% the game (that’ll come soon now that I’ve beaten it), I feel I can now offer a full opinion on the game. Be warned! Thar be spoilers ahead on these waters:

Well, it’s not so amazing. It falls into the classic Zelda trope of, “Get item in dungeon. Use item in dungeon on boss. Put item away and never use again.” Although, Phantom Hourglass is mostly good about reusing items. The boomerang always got some pretty good use, and I have to admit I got some mileage from the grappling hook as well. But I don’t ever recall having to use the bombchus more than ten times outside of the initial dungeon.

But that’s not the main problem I have. My problem is that the game is just laughably easy. There wasn’t a single point where I felt that my hand wasn’t being held by the game designers. Maybe they thought the target demographic was different on the handheld console. I don’t know. Either way, I felt that too many things were just handed over to me. Show me the treasure chests in every floor of every dungeon for only 20 rupees? How can I refuse? And the final boss was a piece of cake, unfortunately (side note: Bellum? what an awful name. “Hey guys, let’s take the Latin word for war and not disguise it at all!”).

Aside from that one major complaints and a couple minor ones, I still felt that Phantom Hourglass was a good game. It had some good variety in it, brought some new things to the Zelda table, and was an okay sequel to my favorite Zelda game (yes, that’s right). BUT THE TEMPLE OF THE OCEAN KING. Once is enough. Maybe twice. But no. You’re forced through the same thing 5 times. It’s awful. But enough about that. It’s time to move on to rant Part II.

I think the Zelda series is getting stale. With Mario, you can have new levels and you don’t even need to change the formula around, because that’s just the nature of a platform game. But I think Twilight Princess and now Phantom Hourglass illustrate that without a really strong gimmick they can’t really stand out as Zelda games. Link to the Past had the Dark World. Ocarina of Time had time travel. Majora’s Mask had the masks. Minish Cap had shrinking. The wolf in Twilight Princess just wasn’t used well enough to make it interesting. The Phantom Hourglass itself isn’t really notable enough to be a major gimmick. I think Nintendo realizes this fact though, and I hope that Spirit Tracks and Zelda Wii are more than, “Well, Ocarina of Time was really good, let’s try and do that again.”

10. Grand Theft Auto 3
PS2/XBox/PC

I really could have thrown up any of the last four GTA games in this position (3, 4, Vice City, San Andreas). I decided to go with the third one because it was the most revolutionary of the highly controversial franchise. What GTA was able to do was create an almost fully-interactive world with its 3D Renderware engine, including non-linear missions radio stations in the cars. Each of the next three GTA games stepped it up a notch, making their worlds even more interactive, but GTA III was the one that really started it off.

9. Super Mario Kart
SNES

Let’s ask ourselves, what is the purpose of video games? For fun and enjoyment. Super Mario Kart is engineered for pure, unadulterated fun and is one of the best games to serve that purpose. Its a racing game, but so much more. Even those who don’t care for racing games can get into the battle-mode aspects and the competition it breeds. The concept is pretty simple and has proven successful almost every time Nintendo brings it back.

8. Chrono Trigger
SNES

Chrono Trigger is one of the most influential games in the RPG genre which became extremely popular due to the way it allowed character development throughout the game. Chrono Trigger’s fighting platform and story allows it to still be one of the best RPG games out there, despite the exponential growth in video game technology.

7. Tetris
Multiple Systems

Move over Rubik’s Cube. Abstract puzzle games had their new champion when a Russian computer programmer developed Tetris, which spread throughout Russia and eventually throughout the world. Tetris has the ability to span all gamer groups (including non-gamers) and all generations. It has become one of the most recognizable games in popular culture today and let’s face it, its still fun to play every time you sit down in front of it.

Half-life 2 made massive advancements in video game technology and is one of the most critically-acclaimed games there has ever been. Half-life 2 has been described as “a masterpiece” and “a work of art in the genre” -IGN. It is the greatest first-person shooter ever made and one of the most flawless video games to date.

5. Super Mario Bros.
NES

Alright, yes there were video games before Mario: pong, space invaders, pac man. But let’s face it; Super Mario Bros. was when video games really began. This is the quintessential video game with the greatest legacy in the history of the entire industry. And tis just one hell of a fun game. Its simple side-scrolling enterntainment which can still hold its own against all of the high-graphics, multi-interactive games of today. Super Mario Bros. is the classic of all classics.

4. Final Fantasy VII

The seventh installment of the popular RPG series set a new standard for video games when it was released. The story, gameplay, graphics, and sound are all top-notch, combining together to make one of the most outstanding video game experiences one could have. The story is what really stands out tough, with its cinematic cut-scenes backed up by an incredible soundtrack.

3. Metal Gear Solid
PS

Konami’s tactical espionage game blew gamers away with its storyline and tactile gameplay. MGS has lead to three sequels, each of which has added to the graphics and improving in various aspects of the game. Everything about Metal Gear works; the primary character Solid Snake who is now one of the most popular VG characters, the engaging, rich, and almost philosophical storyline, the evasive stealth gameplay as opposed to just shooting everything you see, it all works brilliantly.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
N64

Nintendo’s adaption of their popular Zelda series to 3D turned out being a masterpiece of the video game genre. Ocarina of Time is constantly popping up at the top of Top Ten lists by all sorts of video game experts. The imaginative and philosophical world of Hyrule became more interactive than ever, providing one of the highest forms of entertainment electronic gaming has ever provided.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
NES

That’s right, fir the number 1 pick I did not go with the game with the most high-tech graphics and technical elements or the most deep and involving storyline. I went with a game that is just pure fun with bright, vibrant and colourful visuals, which is good for all time zones and can span across generations. The release of Super Mario Bros. 3 was a big deal back in 1989 and its release managed to take video games up to a whole new epic level.
The eight lands and maps of the Mushroom Kingdom were able to truly create a rich, engaging world. Many new elements were added to the Mario gameplay, all of which worked brilliantly. It may have been twenty years ago, but Mario 3 is still the greatest game ever made.

At the beginning of the Nintendo 64 game title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link unsuccessfully tries to save the Great Deku Tree from the evil curse placed by Ganondorf. Imported from the UK! First 4 Figures is proud to present Zant, the first in the 1/4 scale “Master Arts” line of Twilight Princess Centerpieces.

Zant was a servant of the Royal Family of the Twilight Realm who had devoted his life to serving them in the hopes of eventually succeeding them. However, he despised them for not taking any action to rid the Twili of their misery, and was eventually passed over due to his obvious greed and ambition. Rejected, disenfranchised and bitter Zant met Evil Ganondorf, who appeared to him as a god and promised to grant him untold power in exchange for his loyalty. Zant accepted and became so empowered, he became the self proclaimed “King of Twlighlight” at the expense of the Twili who were turned into shadow beasts. Only the bearer of the Triforce of Courage could be brave enough to face Zant, leading to a showdown of epic proportions!

Zant is wearing his distinctive helmet and armor. The helmet’s tongue is removable which reveals his mouth. He also comes with fully detailed clothing. The green line detail on the sleeves is luminous so it glows in the dark, creating an eerie effect. The white detail work on the base is also luminous. At 1/4 scale, he measures approximately 21 inches tall, including the base. Cast in high quality poly-stone, the statue is hand finished and hand painted. Comes dressed in an incredibly detailed and authentic hand tailored fabric costume. Created from official Twilight Princess game files has allowed First 4 Figures to faithfully recreate Zant’s distinct style and add fine detail.

Zant comes in deluxe full color packaging, hand numbered base, and includes an Authenticity Card which allows you to purchase the same number of the model next in the 1/4 Scale “Master Arts” Twilight Princess Centerpieces range. Limited to 750 pieces worldwide. This is the first in our 1/4 Scale “Master Arts” Twilight Princess Centerpieces range. Artist: Goran Sadojevich. Preorders are welcome to ship in May 2010.

To me sentindo a nerd perfeita esses dias: joguei Mortal Kombat, Super Smash Bros e The Legend of Zelda!

morram fans doentes de final fantasy. Zelda é o melhor jogo do universo e acabou.

Yes!

- “O windows ME é o maior e mais mal feito vírus conhecido”

- “O Windows não é ruim, esperem só ele ficar pronto.”

- “Windows ME: agora para Mega Drive e Super Nintendo!”

- “O alicerce da Torre de Pizza foi calculado no Windows ME.”

- “Norton AntiVirus – TRJ/Windows.ME found: Remove it?(YES/YES)”

- “Chernobyl usava WINDOWS ME para monitorar seu reatores.

- “Qual a diferença entre o vírus e o Windows ME? O vírus funciona”

… Eu ja tive windows me.

Let me start of this review by saying that, prior to writing this I had never played a God Of War (GOW) game before. Nope not once in my life, even though I had every intention to do so I always seemed to end up playing, GTA or Socom on the PS2.
Well when I bought by sexy new PSP-GO I decided to see what all the fuss was about. And I mean really I had not heard so much talk about a game since GTA san Andres was being released.
Game took up 1121mb of my internal memory and let me you not a single megabyte went to waste.
GOW COO, is easily the best looking, ground breaking, action packed game I have played on a handheld console since Legend Of Zelda Phantom Hour Glass.

I am sure as hell you want to know what the story is, well you will have to wait. This is because even though to me a story is a very important aspect of the game and it’s what keeps you playing, it’s also important that you know how the game controls. Why would I do a review in this order? Well that’s because, you wouldn’t want me to tell you that the game has a awesome story only to find out that it’s practically unplayable would you? That’s like telling a child that there is no Santa.
The controls are simple and very easy to use, square for the small attacks and triangle for the more powerful attacks. You can combine these 2 main attacks to make deadly combos and such. Speaking of which you can also collect red orbs so you can level up your weapons, for me this is great because it keeps the game fresh and you from getting bored. A few RPG elements never hurt anyone did they? So yeah when you level up for your weapons you can then hold down L (which is also your guard button) and press either square or triangle to make more spectacular attacks. Furthermore you can also learn magic attacks such as the efreet, in which by hold down R and triangle you can engulf everyone around you in flames. This attack can also be levelled up and made much more devastating than it already was. So as you guessed the controls are simple enough to grasp.
The story is quite a strange and I have never heard any of its sort, it’s about a man called Kratos who is a servant to the gods and has to go around carrying out their deeds and fighting there fights for them. He hates the gods but yet he serves them for reasons I feel I should not go into. But basically from what I have noticed the game is a direct prequel to the original god of war finishing where the first one starts of. If that makes sense. Anyway, Kratos is looking for his daughter Coliape and he also wants the gods to release him from his past. To fully understand this story you would have to play the first GOW Which I fully recommend because I don’t understand it as much as I would like to.
The game itself is very short, even though I played it on hard my first time round which took over 11hrs, people have been completing it on normal in 6-7 ours. I have played through it again on normal to see how I match up against the more seasoned players and clocked it in 5 1/2hrs. But I am not writing this to gloat (well maybe a little), I am writing this to addressee my main issue with the game. Now even though it is a handheld game and the PSP is well known for having a short battery life, but does this really justify how long it takes to complete? When reading reviews I hear about people spending 24hrs completing it. I just can’t help feel that this game is half baked at times, including the difficulty issues. With all of this in mind I decided to go through my back issues of *PLAY* to find there reviews of the games. I only want to point out one point from there review and that’s about the head scratching puzzle solving. From what I read puzzles were a huge element in the GOW games and it seems nearly nonexistent in this version.
The game does have extra challenges for you to complete so you can see videos of them making the game, but is it really worth playing through again? Well… yes it is. It’s a very good game and shouldn’t take you long to complete it on god mode.
All in all, the game is very polished, it’s just too easy to complete I don’t remember often being stuck and I would find it unfair rating this game to high because of its easiness. Hmmm… well here is my final verdict.
9.2/10: The frequent game saves make the game very accessible on bus journeys, it’s too easy for the people who are looking for a challenge. The graphics and over all gameplay is truly phenomenal I recommend it over all PSP games. Except metal gear ac!d 2, which is the best game on the PSP EVER.

Admittedly, this is probably not the best title for this article. I’m not a Mortal Kombat fan, and this article isn’t even really about it, nor will it mention it in any way.

But the name kinda makes sense, so oh well.

So! I like games that make me go an extra mile to kill something. I mean, maybe not all the time, but a lot of the time. I’ve also found a majority of these games happen to be licensed titles, which I’m trying to figure out still if that’s a weird coincidence or if the element of the design I so gracefully refer to as THE KILLING BLOW happens to work better in them.

THE KILLING BLOW (which I will no longer capitalize as from here on that would only be annoying) is basically when you beat an enemy within an inch of his life, but then you have to take that inch.

This of course alters course from the majority of games wherein you just beat the crap out of something until it dies. God of War is a popular example, as it marries both standard gameplay methods with THE KILL… er, the killing blow. In God of War’s case, you can kill something ’til it does or engage in a mini game to finish it off, which will be a lot faster and yield specific rewards. With standard flunkies, you can usually bypass killing them and just target one and rip him apart directly.

Wet played it a bit differently, wherein killing the enemies was purely standardized, but certain major enemies, primarily jackasses who came out with gatling guns, had to be killed by triggering a mini game after dealing a certain amount of damage.

The first time I encountered the killing blow was in the original Silent Hill, where enemies would regenerate if you didn’t stomp ‘em dead while they were on the ground. Sometimes lining up on the enemy could be a little tricky, but it added a new level of tension whereas Resident Evil by contrast, had required that you merely shoot something enough times.

Of course, I did just say that I mostly see this in licensed games so I’d look silly if I just talked about non-licensed games, now I wouldn’t I (though I’ll admit, I conjured up a few more examples than I expected)? Besides, while I’m sure there’s a few more, I think I’ve run out of examples.

The first time I recognized the killing blow for what it was happened to be in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, on the original X-Box.

The good one. The sequel wasn’t as good.

Buffy, I mean. Not the sequel to the X-Box itself. I think the 360 is a marked improvement.

Anyway… in Buffy (yes, I’m a fan of the show. No, I don’t care if you think it’s funny if you’re one of the people that never watched it) you have to slay vampires. Stunning concept, huh? But what was nice about the game is that they really made sure that you had to do it properly but that there were a number of ways in order to get it done.

Foremost, you’d be relying on the almighty stake to the heart to do the majority of your dusting work. However, you couldn’t just run around and stab the bastards left and right- you had to deplete their health in order to make them tired enough for you to get an opening. Otherwise, they would just keep blocking your pointy stick over and over again, and if you didn’t kill ‘em fast enough they would just regenerate over and over again ’til you got it right.

Or died.

But it didn’t stop there- you could use a crossbow for sniping (which admittedly I didn’t) holy water- both by lobbing holy water grenades or throwing some at small water sources to sanctify then as almighty death spots. There were also hellfire grenades, a super-soaker which could be loaded with fire and holy water, there was a blade you could use for easy decapitations later in the game, and then there were the environments.

Oh, how I loved the environments. You could throw an enemy into the train, kick them into the sunlight, punch them into a nearby fire… the options were pretty numerous. And of course there were shards of exposed wood everywhere, like a broken two-by-four or a mop handle sticking out of a trash can.

There were many ways to kill! And this is what I liked about Buffy, and probably why it sticks out in my mind foremost as an example of the killing blow. Not only could you not beat most conventional enemies into dust with mindless pummeling (except for the zombies) but it made me appreciate the show from a weird standpoint- like just how hard it is to kill a freaking vampire.

I think much of why this stood out in my mind more prominently is while Silent Hill added a dynamic to survival horror combat, Buffy for me was an extreme shift in what action combat relied on.

I’ve seen other games do it since, but none have ever done it for me quite as well as Buffy. It was a game I went back to play time and time again solely to find new and different ways to kill my enemies. Sometimes I would try and rely entirely on environmental kills, which made some normally easier foes much tougher, particularly when you’re trying to position and throw one onto a shard of wood, but another you haven’t dealt with yet interferes with your plans.

I enjoyed the challenge. If there were achievements, I’d probably have all of them.

As I said though, this concept has been used to some degree in other games as well, though maybe not quite with the same level of death.

The recent Batman: Arkham Asylum built its combat around the very same idea I just talked about in Buffy. In the case of Batman, you’re of course not staking your enemies, but in order for them to stay down you do have to knock them out. This isn’t quite as fast as staking, but the bright side is you can always do it- if Buffy’s stake was knocked out of her hand, that was time spent retrieving your weapon before finishing the job.

Of course, Batman, running on better technology and more current design methods, fights much more smoothly. But much of the challenge would be lost if the developers hadn’t employed the killing blow. Because the game operates, Batman fights, well, like Batman. Does the everyman thug really stand a chance?

So, in order to justify letting you take on ten people at once and, y’know, win, the game requires you to clock your enemies in order to make them stay down. What this utilization of the killing blow results in are fights which are made considerably harder than they would otherwise be, by making sure that if you don’t clear the space you need to knock someone out permanently you can very easily get overwhelmed by the five guys you knocked down just a minute ago.

Alternately, Evil Dead: Regeneration used the killing blow method to complement its Devil May Cry-esque gameplay, making sure that when you killed your enemies, you had to look cool doing it. Sufficiently knocking an enemy down meant you could hit a button and trigger the kill move, which usually resulted in something cool with your chainsaw or shotgun. You were safe doing these things too, so with ED:R it was less a case of it being part of the gameplay challenge, versus what we saw with Buffy and Batman, and more intended to be complimentary to the style of the game.

Of course, these are all standard examples of the killing blow in action games, and serve to represent various incarnations of what you’ll usually see. To its credit (and to some people’s dismay) Ghostbusters provided an interesting but logical (to its material) idea a few months ago.

Much in the style of the aforementioned games, Ghostbusters too required the player to deplete their enemy’s health before finishing them off. The catch with Ghostbusters however was that instead of simply dealing a finishing strike, the ghost had to be wrangled and drawn into a trap in order to take them out.

This sort of killing blow was received with somewhat mixed applause. It’s not because the idea was bad- it was right in line with the source material. Nor was it because the mechanic was broken, as it handled fine and did what it was supposed to. Rather, most people who didn’t like the game just seemed to be unhappy with the amount of work it took to finish off your average ghost. Wrangling wasn’t meant to be super easy, and some people are just of the “kill and move on” state of mind.

The killing blow is clearly becoming a more prominent device in gaming as time goes on, with many major titles as stated using it. Even games that don’t rely on it so completely still make some use of the device in part.

For example, Kingdom Heart II required that bosses be finished off with the closing strike of a combo, and would not die even at one HP before then. This was done in part so that no boss could be defeated with Mickey Mouse if the player had to fall back on him, but added a touch of challenge, especially for players used to extended the heck out of their combos.

Way back in the day, the original Legend of Zelda couldn’t be beaten without using a silver arrow to finish Ganon off; without said arrow, ol’ pig head just would not die.

The killing blow is indisputably requiring more effort on the player’s part per encounter, and is not likely to be a device loved by everyone. But for its salt, adding creative means to dealing with enemies can make individual encounters more memorable and satisfying, and can allow designers to space out enemy encounters a little where needed without sacrificing length by demanding the player focus more energy into the fights that do come up when they occur.
