Biography by Steve Huey
[Bio & Info © allmusic.com]

Nicknamed “America’s Oldest Living Teenager,” Dick Clark’s smooth charm and eternally youthful appearance made him one of America’s best-known television personalities for decades. Still, Clark would never have achieved his amazing career longevity if he hadn’t also been a remarkably astute businessman; whether he was producing television shows or spotlighting music and dance on his legendary show American Bandstand, Clark was a keenly perceptive trend-spotter with a sure feeling for the sort of mainstream entertainment the American public preferred. As a rock & roll figure, Clark played a major role in pushing the music toward respectability — for better and worse. The clean-cut production values of American Bandstand, supported by Clark’s own persona, made rock & roll (not to mention racially integrated dancing) seem less threatening to many adults, and provided significant national exposure for countless artists. On the other hand, Clark — surprisingly, never a tremendous rock & roll fan himself — also helped tame the wildness of early rock & roll by favoring more straight pop and teen idol fare, sending the music into a doldrums only salvaged by the British Invasion. In the long run, though, Clark’s contributions far outweighed that aesthetic sin, and both he and American Bandstand became American institutions. Read More…

Who said that Paris is more romantic than Rome?

The book “Ho voglia di te” by Federico Moccia was publish in February 2006 and after that date Ponte Miglio has become an extremely popular destination between lovers. In fact, countless couples have headed to the bridge since reading the lines of the talented writer. According to a legend, on the bridge there is a lovers’ chain and the protagonists of the novel, Step and Gin, decide to seal their love by hanging a padlock from the third streetlight on the bridge and dropping the key into the waters of the river.

In April 2007, the lamppost partially broke down because of the weight of the padlocks and in July of the same year were installed steel pillars near the lampposts, so that lovers can still hang their lock and make a vow of eternal love. Surely a not-to-be-missed destination during a romantic city break in Rome city with your partner. Don’t forget to buy the padlock!

While traveling through the Mountains of Alicante region i came across many interesting sights. Two areas captured my interest, the ancient Moorish Castle in the town of Castalla and the town of Alcoy world famous for its moors and Christians festival held every year.

The Town of Alcoy is the site of a yearly re-enactment next planned in April 2010 in full historical costume that remains one of Spains most well known and Colourful Fiestas.

It is based on the Battle of Alcoy in the 13th Century and is in place to honour St George the Patron Saint of the town who is said to have saved the town from the Moorish forces of Alazraq in 1275.

As the tale is told James I of Aragon led a campaign of reconquest through the region after centuries of moorish occupation and influence. In retaliation the Moors invaded once more to recover their lost ground. However as the Battle was starting St George is said to have appeared in the sky over the famous gorge in the town to save the day.

It is a colourful and entertaining day in which mock battles are fought all over the town and where a fog of gunpowder and fireworks descend amidst the playing of traditional period music and merriment and much feasting.

It is a 3 day 24hr long festival in which 28 armies do battle and the whole town is festooned in the red cross flags of St George. St George saving Alcoy from the Moors.

Being from the United Kingdom I was fascinated by the interpretation of the Patron St adopted both here and in England and its interpretation in both countries.

In the U.K St George is frequently shown as the Slayer of the Dragon but in this area of Spain he is shown as a saviour from the Moors.

The Local Church of St George at Portal de san Marcos shows fascinating Murals of the battle painted by Fernando Cabrera Canto painted in 1921 and a Relic said to be St Georges finger that is paraded around the town during the festival.

Heres link to the Alcoi festival tourist site:http://www.alcoiturisme.com/

The Battle of Alcoy in St Georges Church

The Relic of St Georges Finger

Further South heading back to Alicante one sees the outstanding pinacle on which is Perched the Castle of castalla.

The Castalla Castle

Raised in the 11th Century by the Moors it was incorporated into the kingdom of Aragon in 1244.

In 1362 the Castle was given to Ramon de Vilanova to defend against Castilian attacks and ultimately became part of the Hapsburg Monarchy’s defence strategy against Barbary pirate attacks on Alicantes coast line.

Throughout the 18th century Spanish War of succession it became a place for storage and was in ruins by 1813.

Castalla like Pamplona also has its own running of the Bull festival in August and like Alcoy above has its own Moors and Christians festival.

The town found itself embroiled in the Spanish Civil war and Between 1933 and 1935 the hill and fort was sacked by the locals looking for treasure. In recent times it has been the subject of restoration with a view towards tourism.

Wandering through the old medieval town on an early morning sunlit stroll is a nice way to start the day and each corner throughout the maze of passage ways can reveal odd surprises and treats for the senses with sunbleached bright coloured old buildings and elevated views of the area ,a coffee and a taste of the local olives is also highly recommended.Below are some views around Castalla.

Bob Sheppard, who has served more than five decades as Yankees Public Address Announcer, has decided to call it quits just 11 months shy of his 100th birthday. Once dubbed the “Voice of God” by Naked Gun star Reggie Jackson, Sheppard has announced over 4,500 games in the stadium booth. With news of his retirement coming on the heels of the Thanksgiving weekend one can only imagine the look on the Indians faces when a young Bob Sheppard provided introductions for the Pilgrims as they arrived at Plymouth Rock in 1621 for the original Fall Classic.

Yes, a Tom Cruise movie, I know, but it’s a movie from the early Tom Cruise years, so it

Yes, a Tom Cruise movie, I know, but it’s a movie from the early Tom Cruise years, so it’s not so bad. Legend a Mid Summer’s Night Dreamish movie is the story of a princess who almost brings about the end of the world, a world dominated by an equal balance of light and dark, by touching a Unicorn, a creature that in some mystical way helps preserve this balance.

Overall I would have to say that this movie wasn’t bad, certainly not the greatest movie that I have ever watched, but certainly not a waste of time by any means. The plot was vague at times as to what was going on, such as: how and why do these mythical beasts have and maintain this balance? Also, when it is decided that Tom Cruise’s character, Jack, needs weapons, we are taken to a cave, presumably well hidden because only the elves and Dwarves know about, but no history is given as to the origin of this cave or about the owners of the treasure that is kept within this cave.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this might be one of those films that reads great as a book, but has something that is lost when brought to the big screen. All-in-all, the cinematography was great, the make-up and character dress was awesome, and the story was, well, OK. But like I said before, this is a movie you might not want to miss especially if fantasy flicks are your thing.

Rating (Out of 5):

The second instalment of the epic Horus Heresy legend sees the beginnings of rebellion. A betrayal b

The second instalment of the epic Horus Heresy legend sees the beginnings of rebellion. A betrayal by the commanding officer on Davin brings Horus and the Mournival (his elite champions and advisors) to the moon of Davin on a quest for revenge and justice. But they all get more than they bargained for, the moon of Davin, the betrayer, it is all a part of an intricate plot. A plot to kill Horus.

When Horus is injured and on his death-bed, desperate measures must be taken to save the most important soldier in the Universe. Unfortunately they are left with only one choice: to take Horus to Davin’s surface and leave him in the Snake Temple to be administered to by its priests. Despite the entire idea being completely against the Emperor’s teachings, the desperation of those left to make the decision means that any measures will be taken to save Horus’ life.

Up to this point we have the traditional war-torn savagery of the Warhammer 40K universe. But as Horus is on his death-bed, we have a kind of A Christmas Carol scene where Horus is visited by a ghost to be shown the future of the universe to try to convert him over to the dark side. As this is the turning point of the entire Warhammer universe it just feels weak, insubstantial and not entirely convincing. After this halfway point not much happens, the intrigues continue to build, but most of the plot of this novel has already been told. The thing is, it’s still gripping. The petty intrigues, and lies and schemes keep your attention. This is not the blockbuster of the first book, but a good solid second instalment (similar to The Empire Strikes Back), which can’t help but fail in its turnabout of the Warmaster, but other than that continues to entertain.

Can’t wait for the third instalment.

Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver Review I have had this for a little over a year now, and I find it

Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver Review

I have had this for a little over a year now, and I find it to be very handy and durable. I was not looking for a very sophisticated GPS, just something I could use in case I loose my car after I go hiking. This unit performs that task extremely well.

As with most reviews on here, I agree that the map built in only has major highways on it. This is perfectly fine, as I wasn’t even expecting that much out of the unit (I understand it was not designed for turn-by-turn navigation).

The only thing I am kind of disappointed with is the cable that came with it. It came with a serial DB9 cable, and to my knowledge you cant find a computer made in this decade with a DB9 port on it. So in order to use the feature on my PC I would have to go out and purchase a DB9 to USB adapter cable. I hadn’t needed it until this month, when I just got into geocaching. It sure would be nice to be able to use the computer to load all those waypoints instead of having to type the co-ords into the GPS itself.

Other than that, I am very impressed with the fact i can drop it, dunk it, and accidently kick it and have yet to see it give any sort of hickup. Thats right, dunk it. I had to chase it down a creek and after i pulled it out – it just kept tickin. I also like the idea of using common batteries (2 AA’s). I dont have to worry about charging it or looking for replacement batteries that I have never heard of.

Reliable, durable, and again – inexpensive! Good job garmin!

Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver Feature

Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver Overview

With the eTrex Legend, Garmin has loaded a full base map of North and South America into one small unit. The Legend is also designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections. The base map contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads and coastlines. The eTrex Legend is also equipped with additional memory totaling eight megabytes. The added memory allows the eTrex Legend to accept downloaded map data from Garmin’s entire line of MapSource CD-ROMs, including Fishing Hot Spots. The eTrex Legend comes in a brightly colored translucent blue case that really makes the unit stand out. New to the product design, Garmin will include marine aids to navigation in addition to the base map. These navigational aids will be pre-loaded into each unit from the factory. It is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including MapSource BlueChart marine cartography, MetroGuide, and Fishing Hot Spots. Accepts up to 8 megabytes of downloaded map detail.

Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver Specifications

Amazon.com Review There are now enough handheld global positioning system (GPS) receivers on the market that you can be choosy when it comes to price, features, and design. Garmin–a leading manufacturer of car, boat, and personal GPS receivers–has a complete line of eTrex handheld receivers, with our Legend falling about midrange.

With Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) support, the eTrex Legend offers extremely accurate readings (rated to within 2 to 3 meters). (For more on WAAS, see the Frequently Asked Questions section.) A good-size screen–288 x 160 pixels–makes it easy to see location details, and the Legend redraws maps quickly when zooming in or out of a position.

Its 8 MB of memory means there is also plenty of room for waypoints, routes, and saved tracks. The Legend will hold up to 500 waypoints, complete with a name and graphical symbol, 20 routes with 50 waypoints each, and it contains slots for 10 saved tracks. You can also download maps from Garmin’s MapSource CD-ROMs (thorough but expensive accessories for the GPS receiver) to see street-level or topographic detail (depending on the CD-ROM title).

But one of the most striking attributes of the Legend is its comfortable and efficient design. While it rests easily in the palm of either hand, it’s most suited for the left hand, where its handy click-stick can be manipulated with the thumb. The click-stick works like the pencil-eraser nubbin on laptop PCs and is handy for moving through screen icons and menus. It also works as a button when pressed down.

The Legend is coated with a waterproof, rubberized plastic shell that grips nicely. Weighing in at only 5.3 ounces, it fits into a pocket or clips onto a belt loop, going almost unnoticed.

The internal trip computer of the Legend provided a range of data about our hikes and drives, including current speed, average speed, trip distance, and time traveled (both moving and stopped). For those interested in checking out their foot pace and distance traveled, it’s a handy GPS to have in hand.

Our only major beef with the Legend is that the receiver sometimes seemed to grow weak. Even when it wasn’t in WAAS mode (which can be tough to maintain a signal in), it dropped the signal from time to time. We even lost the signal once while walking along the streets of San Francisco–it seems that the medium-size buildings were enough to interfere with the reception.

But this only happened on a few occasions. Most of the time the well-designed Legend was able to keep us in touch with up to 12 GPS satellites for a strong-enough read to maintain a tight handle on our location. –J. Curtis

Sporadic reception within urban areas

Can take several minutes for a cold fix

The past fortnight has found me in a suitably strange little place. Uncharacteristically, I have on

The past fortnight has found me in a suitably strange little place. Uncharacteristically, I have on the one hand felt very laid-back, comfortable in the knowledge that I’m well on schedule with all my projects (even taking into account the unexpected stay in hospital and its aftermath) and quite content to “potter” with bits and pieces of editorial work. On the other hand, however, I’ve started to feel that old, familiar twitchiness — the restless need to get back to my writing.

Briefly, a few days ago, I managed to convince myself that, you know, Christmas is almost upon us and, frankly, well, returning to As Morning Shows the Day (my half-finished work in progress) this side of New Year would be pretty silly, wouldn’t it?

And maybe it would… I don’t know… but, the way things are going, I’ll probably be writing again during December. Just can’t help myself, guvna.

Getting my final draft of Children of the Resolution off to Legend last week kind of underscored my need to return to my work. Still not completely back to full health but needing something to do, I’d worked through the manuscript steadily and methodically, falling back into that other world I had in part created. The autobiographical aspect of Children resonated even more, given my recent illness (you’ll see what I mean when you read it), and even as I found it cautionary I yearned to get back to shaping my characters and fictional vistas. And so, once this project was delivered, I returned to As Morning Shows the Day — merely reading through it at this stage, listening to the voice, refamiliarising myself with it.

Yes, I still occasionally manage to convince myself that this is merely my way of preparing for starting back on it in January… but I’m fooling no one, least of all myself.

In other news, the electronic version (for Kindle, Sony Reader etc) of If I Never is now available here. Pretty excited about this. I’m not a huge fan of electronic books but I know a growing number of people are — and having seen the finished product, I’m beginning to understand why! Looks great… but don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself! (Free readers are also available for PCs.)

A sample chapter of If I Never can be read here.

We are going to Ujjain.

The word Ujjain brings to mind Mahakavi Kalidas.

In pure lyrical quality, he is way ahead of all the poets of the world. Shakespeare is a better dramatist, a philosopher and an observer of character. But when it comes to poetic charm, I vote for Kalidas. Upama Kalidasassia. His simile is superb. Shakuntalam, a love story, has been translated into several Indian languages.

According to legend, he was an idiot, but was blessed by Kali and became Kalidas. The Kali temple, where the poet received the blessings of the Goddess, is still there. He was one of the nine Jewels who were guests of the King Vikramaditya.

Ujjain is famous for Shiva as Mahakal and is one of the places where Kumbhamela is held.

It is well connected by rail and road.

It’s Black Friday, and I’m down with the flu so I took a little break from writing. It’s going good, by the way. Even with my stuffy nose my muse still sticks around so I really have no reason to complain.

I saw a movie the other day, it’s been out a while but since it’s indie, it was quite hard to get and I could only watch it online since I could never find it in my favorite DVD store.

The movie is called “Control” and it’s about the life (and death) of Ian Curtis, lead vocalist of the band Joy Division, directed by Dutch director Anton Corbijn. Control marked Corbijn’s debut as movie director (he was mostly known as music video director and photographer) and it was reported that he paid half of the € 4.5 million budget out of his own pocket.

Singer/model/actor Sam Riley (mostly known for being the face of the Burberry ad campaign) played legendary Ian Curtis, and he was phenomenal in his performance.

What’s more amazing about Sam Riley’s performance in the movie is that he had to sing all the Joy Division songs himself and not just lip-sync to the voice of the real Ian Curtis. And he sounded exactly like Ian Curtis, it was pretty unreal.

The movie is written by Matt Greenhalg based on Deborah Curtis’ (Ian’s widow) book “Touching From A Distance” and it started just before Ian met her in 1973 until his death on May 18, 1980. It detailed his journey, from his marriage to Debbie (when they were both in their late teens), to the forming of Joy Division, to the band’s success and his untimely death.

The movie also detailed his struggle with epilepsy, his rocky marriage and his extramarital affairs with a Belgian music journalist Annik Honore.

I love this movie because it really showed the inner struggle of the legendary Ian Curtis, his demons, his depression, his fears and his internal conflicts. His relationships with the two women in his life; Debbie and Annik were also approached in a beautiful way – that you don’t see him as this lying, cheating “rock star” but as a frail, confused and torn human being instead.

After a tired day of shopping, I recommend you getting this movie and just curl up on the couch being completely amazed by Sam Riley’s talents and the incredible vision of Anton Corbijn, especially if you’re a Joy Division fan like me. This is one movie that would remain as a cult classic, in my opinion.

Also, don’t be surprised with the fact that the whole movie is shot entirely in black and white. I think, aside from capturing the feel of the era, it also successfully captured the dark and tormented soul of one Ian Curtis – and you’re left with this haunting feeling hours after you’ve seen it.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

xoxo
