So instead of a highly productive last day of holidays, we’ve bludged around inside under the airconditioner playing Lego Batman.

One of the more recent in the Lego video game franchises, the game holds little surprise to veterans

One of the more recent in the Lego video game franchises, the game holds little surprise to veterans of the other games like Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, and Lego Harry Potter. The game play is simple, requiring you to cycle through various characters as you work your way through a series of scenes of lego violence and puzzles.

Unlike others in the Lego franchise, the Batman game doesn’t adhere to any of the movies or any truly cohesive storyline. Each of the three acts are independent of each other, and you can play as either the Dynamic Duo or their Rogue’s Gallery.

Once you get through the story mode, you can go through the free play to unlock the various hidden characters and other tasty bits that they keep hidden behind silhouette for exorbitant Lego nub fees.

The great part of the game is ultimately in being the Dark Knight and busting up the bad guys. All in all, it’s a great game in the Lego franchise that continues to capitalize on big money names. While this game in it self is not a bad game, if you don’t love Batman, pass this up.

Coming soon! Lego Rockband. Seriously, It’s out later this week.

Lego Batman
Lego Indiana Jones
Legoa Star Wars the complete saga (Har bara provat lite)

Felix:
Lego Batman
Lego Indiana Jones
Legoa Star Wars the complete saga (Har bara provat lite)

Mamma:
Lego Indiana Jones
Lego Batman
Legoa Star Wars the complete saga (Blä)

Two videogames have been driving me absolutely bonkers lately. One won’t just let me complete it (three achievements to go!); the other won’t even let me move forward.

LEGO Batman. Sure, I “beat” it months ago, but every now and then I pop back into it to grab some missed items and trying and unlock everything. And I’ve gotten just about everything…that is, but three collectibles. Now, one of them is painstakingly annoying to obtain. Trust me, I tried three times in a row last night. In one of the Penguin’s villain levels, you have to guide your characters down an icy slope, going through five specific flags to unlock the hidden canister. Sounds simple enough, yes? The problem is that if you miss even one flag you are then dropped into the level’s final boss battle room and cannot return to try again. Meaning you must replay the level again and again and…again. I’ve had zero luck so far. Insert heavy sigh.

And then we come to Eternal Sonata, a bizarre RPG that isn’t really my favorite thing in the world, but I liked it enough to get to the middle of Chapter Three. It has my gang running around a pirate ship of…evil pirates. I don’t know. The storyline is a bit murky to my memory at the moment. Anyways, my dudes are about all LV 19s, and we hit the ship’s main boss: Captain Dolce. To put it simply: she slaughtered us. An online walkthrough suggested that our party be all LV 22s at least before tackling Dolce. That means, if I want to move forward, I have to now waste a good couple of hours just wandering the ship’s floors, fighting generic minion after minion after minion.

I know this blog is called Grinding Down, but grinding is not something I yearn to do. Time is precious, and this sort of roadblock only wants me to put the game back on the shelf and move on to something a little more forgiving.

So I haven’t actually BOUGHT one of these games but I always wondered how they were. At first

So I haven’t actually BOUGHT one of these games but I always wondered how they were. At first I balked at them simply because at first glance they appear to be video game representations of some great pop culture franchises (Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones). They still are just that however they also have a lot more to offer gamers of all ages if you are a fan of any of the franchises mentioned.

I decided to go on a hardcore LEGO demo run so I downloaded demos of all three games mentioned above. You know what? They’re really fun. Sure the controls are simple and so is the game play but it’s refreshing in a way. In some of my early articles you’ll notice I talk a lot about how old games (and in this case simple games) can be a blast because they’re just not that complicated. You only have to worry about your health, a few buttons at the most, and the task at hand. I’ll admit the LEGO series takes this to the extreme for the sake of younger gamers but it’s still playable. It’s just a lot more like the games you played when you were young yourself.

LEGO Indiana Jones take you through the first three movies in the series. This is great because you know before you even pop in the disc you’re going to get your money’s worth and experience some great moments. The familiarity with what you’re about to partake in is worth it’s weight in gold. The demo was essentially the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark (you know, the golden idol and the rolling boulder).

In all the LEGO games you’re never more than one button press away from switching between characters. In this case you can switch between Indy and the guy who follows him into the cave (the guy who played Dr. Octopus……work with me here). Indy can do his usual like use his whip to swing across chasms. The other guy is used for his shovel which can unearth buried treasures. Along with the other LEGO games the demo exemplifies what a developer should offer when releasing such content: It was lengthy and you left the experience knowing EXACTLY what the full version would offer. In the case of LEGO Indiana Jones they even added a couple scenes that didn’t take place in the movie. Overall a fun experience, but let’s see what the other two titles have to offer.

LEGO Batman is the newest of the bunch in this series. You get to fight crime as Batman while switching to Robin when necessary. I felt like the character switching in this game felt more natural than Indiana Jones. Everyone knows through Batman’s legacy and especially the endless toys that he and Robin have a ton of gadgets and different suits. The developers took this and ran with it and I must say it works well. Batman’s suits seem a little more practical whereas Robin is left the more wacky ones (magnetic boots that let him walk up walls, etc.). It all comes together though because you feel like your characters are working as a team moreso than in the other LEGO titles.

You can also play a campaign as the Joker and Harley Quinn but I have to say this part of the game confused me. You start in a fun house of some sort with no discernable objective and at one point after flipping a bunch of levers to pass through a few walls it’s really unclear what you’re supposed to do next. Eventually I discovered a dark doorway I was supposed to go through and that led to a dilapidated roller coaster where I proceeded to get stuck again. Oh well. The Batman part of the game still showed a lot of promise, and I would give this game the edge over LEGO Indiana Jones for this reason and also the fluid cooperation between the characters you control.

In my opinion LEGO Star Wars is hands down the best game in the LEGO series. Maybe it’s a little unfair because as popular as Batman and Indiana Jones are there may be no franchise in the history of pop culture that is as consistent of a juggernaut as Star Wars. Just being able to play through A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi on the same disc is enough to make you take notice. Fortunately LEGO Star Wars also boasts the most diverse lineup of characters. Jedis can use the Force in various ways, droids are used to open otherwise inaccessible areas, and there are also bread and butter Han Solo-type characters that simply sport and old-fashioned blaster.

The demo takes you through the Mos Eisley sequence towards the beginning of the movie that started it all in 1977 and ends with the escape within the confines of the Millennium Falcon. Much like Indiana Jones there’s been some additional sections spliced in to give the game more depth. The added sections also work well in this game. Again they don’t happen in the movie but you feel as if they’re extrapolating on the original content instead of simply tacking on extra fluff.

There are two things that make all three of the games more fun than you would expect. Throughout each of them you’ll find piles of LEGOs that can be put together. In these cases you’ll always build something that helps you move forward in the campaign or a vehicle that you remember the first time you saw it. The latter is where it gets really fun. There’s something that reminds you of your childhood and gets you excited when you can see your creation will soon be constructed into something as recognizable as the Batmobile. Then you get to jump in and drive! The Indiana Jones game is probably the weakest of the three simply because there’s not much from that franchise to construct LEGO-wise.

The other selling point for me is all the characters you can unlock and play as. So many memorable characters can be taken through the campaign just like the big hitters you start the game with. I found a door in LEGO Star Wars that could only be opened by stormtroopers so I switched my character to one and discovered it was an Imperial day spa! Bits of humor like this keep the games fresh as well and give them a life of their own apart from the franchises they use as inspiration. In the end if you’re looking for straight-forward fun that makes you feel like a kid again pick up your favorite of these three. I recommend Star Wars but if you go with your gut you’ll be happy regardless.

Yes, a LEGO movie is in the works and the studio bringing the movie to the big screen is Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers has licensed some of its characters (i.e. Batman) to the Lego franchise and in 2007 bought in with TT Games, the video game publisher, who are responsible for producing the popular “Lego” video game line including “Lego Star Wars”, “Lego Indiana Jones”, and “Lego Batman”. According to Variety, the film has been in development for more than a year and Dan Lin will be producing the film through Lin Pictures.

Leo has made direct-to-DVD movies before, but can a theatrical release for LEGO’s and LEGO people be successful in terms of domestic and world-wide box offices? Who knows…perhaps we may be seeing a Sims movie not too far behind.

Well, I’m one step closer to getting my second full 1,000 gamerscore, which is most definitely going to be from LEGO Batman. Last night, I punched and kicked my way through three more levels to find the remaining helpless idiots and save them from…well, save them from being eternally held by goons and clown-faced mercenaries. Upon sending a flaming batarang up one of said goon’s butts, I unlocked this:

Vigilante (25G): Rescue 25 civilians.

Which has me currently sitting at 37/46 achievements. Now, let’s just be clear…the LEGO games are by and far not terribly challenging or hard. Glitchy, sure. Badly designed at times, you got it. In fact, the achievements they offer up are anything but challenging–what they are, however, is time-consuming. Most of the ones I have remaining involve achieving 4,000,000,000 in studs (yes, that’s the correct number of zeros), buying everything in the game, finding all the mini-kits, and generally completing LEGO Batman to 100%. I’ll get there, block by block (LEGO, that is), but man will it take me some time…

Of course, the Apple Stores are not the only places where people can get the same products, but it may have needed them in order to increase the sale of all of its merchandise. In contrast, Microsoft products are sold in way more stores than Apple products do. So, why is Microsoft about to open its own retail stores?

When it comes to games, people can purchase Xbox 360 games or smartphones at GameStop or Best Buy or at other specialty technology-related stores. If someone wants a new keyboard or PC accesories, people could get those products at Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Target. According to a former Wal-Mart

Despite its many flaws, I love the LEGO videogames. My parents got me LEGO Batman for my birthday (gee, that sentence reads like something a seven-year-old might type; oh well), and a gaming session with it pretty much turns out like the above. It’s all fun and games until things get frustrating as all gets. I don’t even know how kids play this game and get anywhere. Co-op is enjoyable…if you don’t mind dying a lot or getting snappy with your partner in crime. Because you will snap. Oh, you will.

Yet, even with the bad camera angles, glitches, horribly done automobile levels, and forestalling puzzles, one can’t stop playing. There’s too many studs to collect and not enough time. I want to buy–and collect–everything there is, and that’s the part that hooks me every single time. As of this post, I’ve completed somewhere about 45% of the game. What am I doing wasting my time here then? The Batsignal shines above!

My messenger in disguise
Makes up for such short goodbyes
You can’t come home again
Each time it’s different

Rating: 7.5 Out of 10

Lego Batman brings all the classic Batman characters into a Lego world. This game is very fun and very engaging for solo and coop alike. There are tons of secrets which offer a lot of replay value with great graphics and audio. Also you can play as the villains you always wanted to play. However, the camera can be frustrating at times, it can be a little boring, and the AI is a little slow. Overall though, if you like Batman and you like legos then I think you should try this one out.

Ah, the Dark Knight. That towering sentinel, watching over Gotham and protecting her citizenry from the most evil and vile of villains. With his faithful sidekick, Robin, he’s a noble guardian, righting wrongs and doing good.

In this game he does all that, in plastic form!

Yes, welcome to LEGO Batman, the aptly named companion to such games as Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Star Wars. In this game you play Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, the Joker and a great many other heroes and villains through thirty-plus levels of fun and excitement!

It’s all here: the cool gadgets, the colorful characters, the really annoying, repetitive music (you’d better really like Danny Elfman, is all I’m saying), and the nifty vehicles. In fact, unlike the other Lego games, the vehicle levels are some of the most fun!

The game has significantly more depth and unlockables than Lego Indiana Jones, though it’s not quite as intense as Lego Star Wars (this is to be expected, given that the latter has many more levels and about twice as many characters). You do, however, get the fun of playing both as heroes and as villains, each with their own overlapping story lines. It’s a lot of fun and includes the usual trademark humor we’ve come to expect of this franchise.

The only real drawback to the game is that there isn’t a lot that’s new. It’s pretty much just the other Lego games with Batman’s face drawn on. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s worth noting.

Otherwise, a great game, lots of fun and worth every penny!

As you know, I love Batman, but I also love Lego, and Lego Star Wars was my surprise favourite of 2005. So naturally it follows that I would love Lego Batman. Having now played Lego Batman, though, I was disappointed to find that the stories weren’t based on any of the films or comics. That’s just a wasted opportunity, if you ask me. There’s so much Lego ridiculousness lying dormant in the Bat mythos, waiting to be excavated. Anyway, I figured that somewhere down the line there’d be a sequel, and as part of my pitch for Producer or Head Writer on Lego Batman II, I thought I’d stupidly give away my ideas for free. Here are some Batman stories that would make great Lego adaptations:

Batman: The Movie

“Diabolical!”

No, not Tim Burton’s classic Bat-film – I’m talking West, pure West – the very first Batman film is just screaming for a Lego retelling. The ridiculousness of it all; it’s like a hand in a glove: Penguin, Joker, Riddler and Catwoman get together on a Penguin Submarine (it literally looks like a penguin) and turn the United Nations into powder! Add a rather amusing riddle about apples and applesauce and you have the recipe for a hilarious Lego videogame.

Tales of the Demon

While this isn’t one story per sé, it works well as one. Introducing one of Batman’s greatest enemies Ra’s Al Ghul – The Demon’s Head – and greatest foils, the disarmingly beautiful Talia al Ghul. Tales of the Demon feels like a Bond film, spanning several exotic locales and pitting Batman against the strangest of enemies, including, but not restricted to ninjas, a leopard, a raging bull, the Bronze Tiger, and Ra’s Al Ghul’s faithful brute of a servant, Ubu. Batman even has a forced marriage to contend with – do I hear Lego hijinks? And what Batman/Ra’s tale would be complete without a shirtless swordfight? Check.

Dark Moon Rising: Batman and the Monster Men/Batman and the Mad Monk

This is just cool.

Old meets new in Matt Wagner’s surprisingly recent jaunt into the world of zombies and bat-men. It maintains all the trappings of goofy Golden Age horror pulp with the modernity of well, good writing I suppose! Barely one year into his crime-fighting career, the Batman must brave the perils of Mad Science and Ancient Evil to save Gotham City. Lego zombies and vampires? Yes please!

Knightfall

Look at the size of those hands!

The [in]famous 90s event comic Knightfall has a few things going for it. Firstly, then-new villain Bane masterminds a jailbreak down at Gotham Penitentiary, loosing all of Batman’s foes upon the city once more. Secondly, Batman is run ragged rounding up the most obscure of adversaries – Mad Hatter, Cavalier, Firefly, Zsasz, Killer Croc, and the Ventriloquist to name a few – while regulars Joker, Scarecrow and Poison Ivy plan something a little more sinister. Thirdly, Bane breaks Batman’s back, which would be hilarious in Lego. All of it would be hilarious in Lego, especially that maniac Firefly. It would be a great intermission to break up the gameplay, giving players an opportunity to use other characters like Azrael, Huntress and Nightwing in Batman’s absence.

No Man’s Land

Another 90s event comic that was terrible to read, but great for Lego business, is No Man’s Land. Gotham has been hit with an earthquake of biblical proportions, separating the city from civilisation. Of course, this sends its denizens into complete and utter madness, and the Bat-family have their work cut out for them trying to placate them. So while the earth is shaking, and Gothamites are running around like chickens with their cut off, Batman’s enemies work to carve out their piece of the pie. Mmmm…pie. Earthquakes and Lego blocks are a match made in heaven, especially for the destruction-loving boy that lives inside us all.

Batman & Robin: The Movie

At least Alicia Silverstone was hot, right?

You know why the first Lego Star Wars game was so hilarious? Because there was so much in the source material to make fun of. Next up on So Bad It’s Good: Batman & Robin. Easily the worst Batman film ever, what better way to bring Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Bane, Poison Ivy and Dr. Freeze together in a ridiculous camp-fest of Good vs. Evil? Can’t wait to see those Lego Bat-nipples!

The Dark Knight Returns

An aging Bruce Wayne is forced out of retirement once more to teach the youth a lesson [I'm surprised how fitting that summary is].
*Cue hilarious cutscenes about Batman being too old for this $#!+*
The opportunities for comedy here are legion. Batman even dresses as a homeless old drunk woman in what becomes a liquor store shootout. There’s some great showdowns here which would make for equally great boss battles. The explosive battle with Two-Face on a high-rise (a helicopter is also involved), the brawl with the Mutants gang leader in the city dump, and the final duel with the Joker in an abandoned theme park. I can’t believe I almost forgot the fight with SUPERMAN. Could anyone have any doubts as to how great this would work in Lego? The story lends itself to two-player gameplay as well, with Carrie Kelley taking up the mantle as the fourth [and first female] Robin.

Sorry, I just have to include this picture:

Now, THAT is cool.

Hush

Wow, they just summed up Hush in one picture.

Hush wasn’t much more than an excuse to pit Batman against his rogues gallery and introduce a new villain (or to give Jim Lee an opportunity to draw them all), but that’s just the type of story you need for an all-star videogame. Supporting players include Huntress, Robin, Nightwing and even Catwoman against the likes of Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Joker, the Riddler, Ra’s Al Ghul, Lady Shiva, Scarecrow, Clayface [disguised as Jason Todd - back from the dead - no less!], and finally, Hush. Oh, and did I mention there’s another fight with Superman? Trust me, it never gets old.

There you go, eight thrilling chapters for a Lego Batman sequel right there. Does that not sound like the Greatest Batman Videogame of All Time in the making?

Coming later this year to all the major consoles and the Nintendo DS/DSi, fans of Guitar Hero and Rock Band will be getting a quirky new treat from the team of Harmonix, MTV Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games: LEGO ROCK BAND.

Aimed at players of all ages, the songs will not include lyrics unsuitable for younger players, which many considered a problem with the original Rock Band title, especially since its style was definitely not one that would otherwise alienate the youths. But adult gamers shouldn’t be put off: the lineup of songs announces so far might have a younger lean, but is by no means ‘kiddie’, including Blur’s Song 2, Carl Douglas’ Kung Fu Fighting, Europe’s The Final Countdown, Good Charlotte’s Boys and Girls and Pink’s So What.

This will definitely be one to check out for fans of the Lego series OR the GH/RB games when it hits stores this Christmas!

* * *

Also for those who can’t get enough of rockin’ out on their consoles and want to take that love to the real world (without actually picking up a guitar), we’ve got some stellar McFarlane action figures based on massively successful Guitar Hero franchise. Whether you’re looking for the God of Rock or Johnny Napalm, Lars Umlaut or Slash, we’ve got a number of figures and their variants available in the Guitar Hero section over at CMDStore.
