Today we had Leia’s daycare conference. She has a new best friend, Elin. She is a bit younger than Leia, but they really like each other. Neither of them nap during the day, so they get to spend a lot of alone time together when the other children sleep. But she is doing well. There were no complaints or anything to be concerned about.

They did do a.. language test with her, that they did with all of the children. But I think it is a bit unfair to Leia.. she wouldn’t do nearly as well as a Swedish child her age…… There were like 10-15 pictures of objects, like a spoon, baby, shirt, etc.. And the children were asked what the picture was. She could only say the words of a few of the objects. And half of the words that she knew were in English. Instead of them writing “baby” on her report sheet, they wrote “bebi”……….. Which sorta upset me. Silly, I know.. but they should know she is saying it in English.. and it isn’t that she is mis-saying the Swedish. And it isn’t that she doesn’t know the words, or doesn’t know what they are, she just doesn’t say them.

But for the hand, she did say “ham.” Which is an on-going joke between Leia and I. She’ll say “ham” and I’ll say “haaaannnnDDD.” And then she’ll look at me very seriously and say “haaaaamMMMM.” )

They said she also plays with cars and trucks and does lots of puzzles.

Oh yeah.. and Fredrik was off today. We thought he went back to work today, but he was off. And he’ll have Friday off too this week. We are going to go dress hunting for Leia in Säffle on Friday. And I need to try to take my Swedish test on Friday morning since Fredrik can watch Leia.

I finished my book report today, ended up being 6 pages long….
Never would have thought I’d be writing a book report in another language, and definitely not 6 pages worth.

So I am trying to finish up as much of my Swedish class as possible before the end of the term. National test of course too, coming up. And I’ve signed up for classes for next term. I need to talk to my teacher about the many different parts of the test and find out when I have to take them!

Fredrik is getting tons of work, so that is good. Hopefully enough stuff to keep the new guy busy, too. He might have to do some measuring in Ed, because of all the rain we have had, they are afraid the water level in Stora Le is rising too quickly. He was maybe supposed to have started last week, but didn’t, so not sure if that is still something he will have to do.

But I think that that is enough for tonight.. :/ Sorry that it wasn’t much, but I’m really tired, it is definitely bed time. I’ll try to write some more tomorrow!

Durante a semana comentei as declarações de Belluzzo no CBN Ribeirão Esporte. Caiu na internet, criticamos o dirigente e agora merecemos a crítica. Se ele errou, nós também erramos ao insistir com o tema.

Torcedores são-paulinos que não tinham visto, nos ouviu na rádio e passou a ter raiva. Quem já havia assistido, ficou ainda mais furioso. Outros, mais exaltados, se armaram. Para os fanáticos, o estopim.

Ninguém sabe a qual facção pertence os vândalos que organizaram tal emboscada à delegação palmeirense. Mas, certamente, tal ação foi desencadeada por desmedidas declarações de dirigentes, treinadores, jogadores e imprensa, que repercutem ‘notícias’ na mídia.

Será que estou sendo radical? Qual objetivo do jornalismo esportivo? Prestes a me formar, confesso, estou confuso. Ignorar o fato ou criticar mais do mesmo? Quanto tempo merece um assunto como este? Refletir é sempre bom…

Since Leia’s Farmor and Farfar were on their way here this past weekend, we decided to invite them to an early Thanksgiving dinner at our house on Saturday.  Family friend Aina also joined us and we had a nice day!  It was nice to have company and enjoy the holiday with others, even if it isn’t a Swedish holiday. And even though we weren’t in the US, the turkey tasted just the same, as well as the stuffing and even the pumpkin pies. What a looong day of baking and cooking though. It is very tiring. :/ Two pumpkin pies, baking at least 1 hour each and then the turkey breasts took a bit over 2 hours.. and that is just the start of a Thanksgiving dinner.. :/ ))

Leia loves her puzzles, and she spends a lot of time doing them. And she is really, really good at them too. It is fun watching her do them. She likes to test us, too. She will put a piece in a spot and look at me and she’ll smile and say “neejj” and take it and put it in the right spot. She is testing me to see if I will say that it is okay.

Right now I am “watching” Gladiator. It is such a fantastic movie. I had to study it and write a paper about it for my Mythology class for university. Quite possibly one the best classes I had.

I am trying to finish up a book I am reading for my Swedish class, Den vedervärdige mannen från Säffle (The “horrible” man from Säffle). I have to read it and write a big paper about it, about the language differences from the time it was written and now…… *joy* And I have so much other stuff to do as well. I have the National test coming up and I have a test that I missed in the beginning of the month that I need to take. And I have to come up with a small thesis about literature and write a big paper about it…. Yeah.. really sounds like a 100 point class (400 points is full time). There was really no choice but to continue after the New Year. All the work I have to do with the class and that I have NO motivation at all. I haven’t learned anything new; I know all the Swedish that I am going to know – at least from taking Swedish classes. I know all the grammar, it is just to learn new vocab, which I can’t do in a Swedish class, as strange as that might sound.

But last week I finished my English class. I turned in my last 4 papers (out of 12 total). Very happy to have that overwith! And I will be having a “fika” with my teacher this week, so I am very much looking forward to that!

Not that much going on.. Fredrik didn’t work today or tomorrow. But this is his last work week of being on 50% time. Next week Leia will start daycare Mon-Thursday, and Fredrik will be home on Fridays (80% time). And then in January, he goes back to 100% time, and it will just be Leia and I on Fridays. We are going to miss Pappa like crazy. He will have about 3 weeks off for Christmas, so at least we get to have all that time with him before he has to start working properly again.

I am anxiously awaiting my new glasses. If we don’t get a call by tomorrow, then we can call them and ask about them. I really need them, everything is becoming blurry and it is getting difficult to read any text.

Not that much else going on. :/ We went and bought two huge containers today to store more of Leia’s clothes that she is quickly outgrowing. We have about 3 already. I’m hoping to get to go through her clothes and put away things she has outgrown. We are going to try to sell her crib and changing table so that we can get her a bigger bed. Fredrik went to the dump today with lots of odd things. Tomorrow I will finish up the book if I don’t get to tonight, and then MAKE myself write the entire paper tomorrow. I am *extremely* nervous about the National test.. :/ They can be pretty intense. :/ But if I pass this class then I will be allowed to apply at Swedish universities and apply for any program that they offer. (If I wish to do so.) Obviously, passing this class means that my Swedish is good enough for university level.

Blah blah blah.. I need to read some more! I almost know who the murderer is!

Det namn vi tänkte på allra mest under slutet av graviditeten var Leia eller Leja. Tyckte att det var vackert men efter att ha slagit upp namnets betydelse på flera olika språk och hittat översättningar som lealös, apatisk, orkeslös, lat osv…. så blev namnet inte lika fint. Minns inte vilka språk det var på men det spelade liksom ingen roll. Vem vet. Flickan som bär namnet kanske träffar en man vars släktingar kommer från det landet eller något liknande. Inte så kul att komma nhem och presentera sin fru som “fröken orkeslös” ?

This has to be my most favorite picture of Leia and I.  Fredrik took it with his mobile when we were in the US right after Leia was born.  She is only 2 months old here.

She is just the sweetest thing ever.  Tonight, while laying next to her bed (I lay on the floor with my head on her pillow), I had my eyes closed, trying to not fall asleep – while waiting for her to fall asleep.  And all of a sudden I felt two little baby hands on either side of my face, and then I opened my eyes and she pulled her head close to mine and touched her forehead to mine, and I just melted. ♥

¿Quien de ustedes no ha visto o por lo menos ha oido mentar a la saga de Star Wars (aqui en Mexico, la Guerra de las Galaxias)? Todos los que hayan nacido en la decada de los 80’s sufrieron los embates mercadotecnicos de estas cintas. Y es natural, cuando uno es un crio que no sobrepasa el metro de altura, queda boquiabierto ante el despliege de rayo lasser, naves intergalactica y esas maravillosas espadas de luz. ¿Que niño no quiso una de ellas? Eran brillantes y hacian ruidos chidos. Y claro, como no te la podian comprar pues ni siquiera existian, pues no quedaba mas que esperar a crecer y comprar una cuando ya las inventaran. Ya pasaron 20 años y yo sigo sin ver ni una sola en venta. Que desilusion…

A grandes rasgos, la primera peli estaba chida (cuando uno es niño no es muy exigente) pero las demas estan de weba. Ya de grande, veo la cintas y me pregunto como pudieron y pueden ser tan populares e influyentes cuando en el fondo todo es el vacio oropel de una producto “impactapendejos” ¡hasta una religion nerd surgio de ellas, y su biblia es un libro escrito por un fan llamado “Yo, Jedi”! ¿Asi o mas idiotas?

Pero siempre hay algo rescatable hasta en las peliculas Lado B (Star Wars tiene todo para ser una, a pesar de su alto presupuesto: Una historia pendeja y llena de huecos argumentales, malas actuaciones, villanos de risa, mostruos cagados, etc.). En este caso en la princesa Leia. Anque toda las saga fue una plasta que no sabia ni donde estaba, en la tercera, el Regreso del Jedi, aparecio de una forma tal que nos marco para siempre en nuestro futuro tiranetero. Vestida con un extremadamente sexy vestido de esclava sexual, atada con una cadena que sujetaba un gordo asqueroso y lujurioso (ejem, nada que ver conmigo) y mostrando esos encantos que tanto tiempo mantuvo ocultos, hizo que cuanto niño viera la cinta disfrutara de su primera fantasia sexual y tal vez, a su primera ereccion. Nuestras inocente mentes fueron corrompidas de forma precoz debido a las torneadas piernas de Carrie Fisher. Y a ustedes ¿no les paso?

Despues de los eventos de Star War, a Leia le gusta escaparse por la noches, ponerse su traje sexy y trabajar en las esquinas

Leia isn’t that much of a girlie-girl. She has a couple of dolls, but never plays with them. As soon as she gets up in the morning it is blocks and cars. She loves frogs and worms and cats – I guess her cat obsession can be seen as a little “girlie.”

Right now she is obsessing about learning her colors.  She knows what all the colors are and she goes around pointing out everything, trying to get it right.  Blue and green are her favorite, and she always gets them confused.    But at daycare, they are going over colors.. so that is why she is so into that right now.  They take a color and spend 2 weeks on it.  This week and next it is the color red.  They find things in nature with that color, and draw things that are red, etc.. etc..

Leia went around yesterday afternoon, asking for some “canny” = candy.  *sigh*
So I promised her that we’d go to the store today and she could pick out a few pieces of candy, since it is Saturday afterall.  In Sweden they have what is called “lördagsgodis” = Saturday candy.  Children get candy ONLY on Saturdays.  It is an old tradition and I think that it is a good thing.

So now it is time to shower and get ready to let Leia go pick out some “canny.”

Sí, sé que hace ya dos semanas que se celebró Halloween, pero sí algo he aprendido con Star Wars es que da igual la fecha, porque la doble trilogía siempre estará de moda. Los personajes de la saga galáctica tuvieron su lugar en la celebración “de la noche de los difuntos”: las propias calabazas, sobre las que se tallaron los motivos más frikis de las películas de Lucas. Al fín y al cabo, nadie entiende mejor de calabazas. A los fans acérrimos de Star Wars se las dan todos los fines de semana (sobre todo si llevan cierta mochila de Yoda adosada a la espalda).

Precisamente el maestro jedi es uno de los más populares en esta muestra de arte frutal. Viendo la segunda imagen lo cierto es que quizás lo más apropiado sería un melón para no desmerecer el cutis verdoso del guardíán del planeta Dagobah.

Chewacca también tiene su lugar en esta galería. Atención a la tercera imagen…quizá tengas que volver a mirarla una y otra vez para dirimir si es un criter, un kiwi gigante, o un perro con problemas de obesidad. Pues no. Sigue siendo una calabaza.

Los hermanos SkyWalker no son fáciles de retratar trabajando con textura calabacil (al menos la cara de Mark Hamill antes de su accidente). Si lo de abajo es Leia/Carrie Fisher yo tengo un aguacate en el frigorífico con la cara de Obama.

Vale, R2D2 era más fácil. Su forma y tamaño siempre me han recordado más a un barril de espumosa cerveza, pero aceptamos calabaza como soporte. Sin duda, la mejor encarnación de R2 es la tercera, en modo “navaja suiza”.

Para finalizar con la batería de héroes no podía faltar Han Solo. Si no era ya poco suplicio que plasmaran tu jeta en una fruta encima eligen aquella de estreñido que pusiste cuando te cubrieron con carbonita…

El lado oscuro también tiene su mercado. Darth Vader y la Estrella de la Muerte son otros de los motivos más recurrentes con gran acierto en el caso de la segunda. En cuanto al villano de nódulos en la garganta me quedo una vez más con la tercera foto. Aunque lo mismo podría ser Darth Vader que un Playmóbil con máscara antigas.

Más malos malosos. El emperador Palpatine, Darth Maul, Jabba, Boba Fett y las tropas imperiales. Buenísimo el modelo de calabaza blanca de las últimas.

Como guinda a este pastel, de calabaza, claro (festival del humor), un X Wing y una imagen de un artista que tiene mucho talento. Cuando averigue el nombre lo reflejaré aquí, porque se lo merece.

So finally – some pictures of the new rug we bought on Monday!
We absolutely love it! It is made of wool, and it is very flat, and it has no matted bottom, it is just very, very thing wool. We wanted to try something a little different. And it was really cheap. It was normally 3300 sek (470$) for 1500 sek (215$)!! More than ½ off. (They were having a sale on some of their rugs.) We didn’t want a very fluffy rug, which is mostly what is sold now – because of cat hair. It can get really difficult to vaccum rugs. We love the color and the texture. We are anxiously awaiting new couches, as I have been since we’ve been living here.. ..but we’ll have to wait a bit longer, until we get Leia’s stuff out of the living room and up in her room (and that will be awhile – until she can go up and down by herself to play). Until then we are stuck with our blue couch. )

Ignore the yoghurt-covered red tablecloth in the dining room.. :/ ) Leia makes such a mess sometimes!

We are also trying to figure out what to do infront of the fireplace. We might go look at some tiles tomorrow.

And this past Sunday was Father’s day – I forgot to mention.
While we were out on Saturday, Fredrik picked out a radio that he liked and wanted – for using around the house – so he picked out what he wanted and I paid for it. That was his present.

Right now I am in a limbo of trying to decide what I want to do with the rest of my life. My new American friend, who is 50+ and has been through everything that I have had to suffer, is helping me greatly. I am very happy that I was able to meet her because I think she will be very valuable to me. It is incredibly frustrating not knowing where to go or what to do or who to talk to, but she is guiding me in the right direction so I hope that something good comes from it.

Fredrik worked 2 days this week and he is off again tomorrow. So a fun family day.
We have our annual parent-teacher conference at daycare at the end of the month, and we are going to ask the neighbor if she will babysit Leia for us. ) So hopefully that will go well! Leia’s first non-family babysitter.

We had a long weekend, in a good sense! 

Fredrik and I have been so excited about our new living room..    We’ve been hunting and hunting a new rug, and we finally decided on one on Monday, so I’ll try to get a picture of that soon. 

Fredrik was off work from Friday – Tuesday, so he had a 5-day weekend, nothing wrong with that, ehh? 

Leia and I have been furiously baking gingerbread cookies.  They are by far Leia’s favorite cookies and they are not unhealthy, so we let her indulge herself with them. 

And Leia absolutely loves to help-out in the kitchen! For her birthday I bought her some adorable IKEA kitchen utensils for children and when Leia has any kind of inkling that I might be baking in the kitchen, she runs and tries to drag her high chair into the kitchen, grabs a bowl out of the drawer and gets her wisp.

There is also a picture of me carving our pumpkin for Halloween. And a couple of pictures of Leia meeting the Tom & Jerry characters at one of the shopping centers in Karlstad’s centrum. She was afraid of them, and wouldn’t even get close enough to take a piece of candy.

On Saturday we went to Örebro to visit with Fredrik’s morfar and farmor. We met Fredrik’s parents at morfar’s so we were able to spend time with them as well.

We also went to a furniture story to look for a rug. But we didn’t find anything that we liked.

I was the only one that showed up to my English class today, which is pointless. But I enjoy talking with my teachers. I have 2 teachers now, one is Swedish and the other is an American woman! We get along well and she is really nice. She’s lived in Sweden for over 20 years. Don’t ask me why there are two teachers, but there are. I think the one is retiring soon and the American will be taking over her position. But the American has given me lots of tips about schooling and all that and I really enjoy chatting with her.

Leia just came up to me and said “byta troja” (change shirts). ) She spilt some välling on her shirt and she wanted to change. She is talking more and more every day. Not nearly like other children her age, but she is doing very well.

Sunday was a cleaning, and Fredrik trimmed the tree in the front yard. Monday we ran some errands and Fredrik took branches to the dump. And on Tuesday I had an eye appointment. I haven’t gotten new glasses since right before I left the US 7 years ago! I am getting constant headaches and having trouble focusing, so we decided it was time for me to go. :/ I have had 3 check-ups though while living here, for driving purposes, so my eyes have been fine. But it has been very recently that they have gotten worse.

So I did the eye tests … very similar to the US .. but here it isn’t “1 or 2 … 1 or 2 … 1 or 2″ .. here it was more “that one or this one … that one or this one..” My eyes are worse, but she thinks also that since my glasses are so old that they have declined in strength, making an even bigger difference in how well I see. So I will have them in 7-14 days. And they weren’t as expensive as we thought they would be, 4000sek (571$). For eye test, lenses and frames. We thought they would be double that, since my eyes are so bad. We were almost considering investing in lasik eye surgery, to off-set the cost of future glasses.

But now it is time to put Leia to bed. I’ll try to get a picture up of the new rug.

While we were in the US, we asked my best friend, Carie, to be Leia’s Godmother.    We’d been wanting to ask her for awhile, but waited for our trip to be able to ask her in person.  She flew from Kansas with her 6 month old baby girl, Lillie, to visit with us.  She was shocked, surprised, and a little honored I think (I hope).  )

In Sweden, a  Godparent is someone that the child is supposed to go to for advice – someone the child is supposed to grow up knowing very well.  Someone besides the parents that the child feels they can go to for anything.

Carie is my best friend and Fredrik and I both respect her and her husband very much and we hope that Leia can have a fantastic relationship with them, even though they are over 3000 miles away.  Carie is such a wonderful person and I know that she would be a fantastic role model for Leia.

Not only do we want Carie to be a big part of Leia’s life while she grows up, but we also would like Carie to be Leia’s guardian if something were to happen to Fredrik and I.  I have been looking deeper into this situation, because there are complications since we live in Sweden.  In Sweden, as we have found out, only the government social services can decide who becomes guardian of a child when both parents die.  In the US, you make a will and state who you want to leave your children to.  Honestly, I prefer the American method.  I think the parents should be able to decide who they do, and most importantly, do not want the children to be left with.

I know that it is possible to leave a will and state who you would prefer the child to be left with, but that doesn’t mean that it will be that way in the end.  It might be taken into consideration, but it doesn’t mean that it will happen.

So I am having issues with this, as I see it a being a bit unfair for us expats.  Half of our family and friends live in the US and half live in Sweden.  I don’t think that Leia’s options should be limited to Sweden.  So we are going to contact our lawyer here in town, and see if he even deals with these things, and see what we can do legally, to allow Carie to become Leia’s guardian if something were to happen to us.  If we can have any say into the matter, we have to make it legally possible for Carie to leave Sweden with Leia so that it would not be considered kidnapping.  (Just like I can’t even leave Sweden by myself without a written statement from Fredrik okay-ing it – or it is kidnapping.)

You’d be surprised by the weird laws and procedures that I (we) have to go through with being a double-nationality family.

So this is something else we’ve added on our to-do list.

And we are sending lots of hugs to Carie and her family right now.  Carie and her husband are both in the US Air Force and her husband, Terry, has left for a 6 month tour in the Middle East.  We know that Carie and their 3 children are going to miss him so much, and worry about him so much.  Lots of hugs to all of you!!  ♥

I was going to try to post individual pictures, but found out it was extremely time-consuming. (And you might have noticed that I changed layouts. I prefer this one; I find it more organised and a little cleaner. And I really like the picture option at the top. I do enjoy the new blog and I feel a little spark of fun in creating something new, or maybe from just starting over.)

But back to the pictures —
I was going to post individual pictures, but it was too much to do and so I decided to go with the collage after all. You can’t see the pictures as well, but it is easier for me and then my not-so-vast audience can see more than just a couple of pictures.

Here is a collage from Leia’s 2nd birthday party! We had a great day. We had Mormor and Morfar with us of course, and then Farmor and Farfar. The neighbor, Ulla, came over with her daughter, Christina, and her 2 grandchildren, Leia’s boyfriend, Nils, and his sister, Alice. It was lots of fun and it was so nice for Leia to have other children here!
