Sometimes you just have to sit down and watch a British drama for a change. Be sure to just sit down

Sometimes you just have to sit down and watch a British drama for a change. Be sure to just sit down and try to clear your mind and give this film a chance as if you’re expecting the crazy films that the English is feeding us then this might look like it but on a more mellow level.

I guess films like this that were made in the mid nineties aren’t really known to us Filipinos. With kick-ass films such as Independence Day, Twister, Mission: Impossible, and the English made Trainspotting, who would’ve thought that there is a gem of a film somewhere around the world. The greatest explanation for this is the Internet is just starting to boom that time and Mr. Google has not been born yet.

The premise of Mike Leigh’s, the director, film is plainly simple. The film gives us the simple life of the Purley clan. The sister is almost, but not really, wants to kill her daughter because the kid is crazy. The brother has a carefree attitude outside the house but has problems with the wife and the niece. And we have on a separate storyline the story of a black woman trying to retrace her roots.

With the numerous telenovelas, Koreanovelas, and Asianovelas around us, we might say that we’ve already seen this kind of story. I mean as Asians we are so used to family storylines already due to the close family ties that we have in our culture and society. So, for obvious reasons, if you’ve seen this film already you might say that the plot has nothing to compare with our month long television series.

That’s where this film is better, in a way, since the storytelling was shortened to just two hours and forty-two minutes. Leigh was able to produce the needed punch in that short amount of time that includes an eight minute one-take shot of the black woman and the sister in the diner.

The plot twist at the ending is actually worth the wait. Again, if you’ve seen one too many Asian telenovelas, you might say that this film wouldn’t hurt me in any possible way. Then, you can just look at it this way, we’ve been bombarded by a lot of royal dramas with the likes of The Queen or Elizabeth that we’re not actually really familiar with the British drama for the ordinary people unless if you’ve seen Notes On A Scandal or something in that matter.

I went to see New Moon on opening night with my two best friends. Chels’s aunt rocks my rocks for getting us all advanced tickets.

Okay so about 5 people from school were there, and two teachers o.o

Right when the movie started, like just when it said ‘new moon’ on the screen, me and everyone in the theater screamed

I cried twice, once when Edward left and Bella was wandering the forest calling his named, and another time when she went to Italy and saw him and ran into his arms.

Every single girl SCREAMED when Jacob took off his shirt to put on Bella’s head. He is SOOO SEXY! Like I was freaking out and hyper-ventilating.

Bella and Jacob ALMOST kissed like 3 times in the entire movie, which pissed me off, because hes mine. ALL MINE.

There’s lots of action in the movie. They added some things that weren’t in the book, such as Bella getting on the creepy guy’s motorcycle, and Bella continually emailing Alice at a wrong email address.

I also liked the fight between Edward and the Volturi, and Jacob vs. Paul, hot hot :3

The ending pissed me off though, because Edward was like ‘One condition…marry me.’ then Bella gasped, and the screen went black. I’m like WTH!!!!!! Then I threw things at the screen xD

Well that was my New Moon spoiler, hope you enjoyed it. All in all, it was an amazing movie; the new director didn’t disappoint. Guys will love it too, because there’s perverted humor and action xD

GO SEE NEW MOON!

-Amy

P.S- I think I’m Team Jacob now <3

During the Irish War of Independence, Irish Republicans mounted a number of armed operations in Brit

During the Irish War of Independence, Irish Republicans mounted a number of armed operations in British cities, including Manchester, which were intended to cause economic damage and put pressure on the British government to cede independence to Ireland

The Campaign in Manchester 1920-22

In the autumn of 1920 the IRA launched a series of attacks on British cities, including Manchester, London, Liverpool and Glasgow, which were carried out by local Republican units. Peter Hart has estimated the strength of the IRA in Britain as about 1,000 volunteers, of which several hundred took part directly in operations. Almost all IRA volunteers were permanent residents, whether born in Britain or Ireland.

On 24th November 1920 the government announced in the House of Commons that they had captured secret Sinn Fein documents, amongst which were detailed plans to destroy the Stuart Street power station in Bradford, Manchester that proved electricity to many parts of the city including mines and factories. The government alleged that the plans contained maps of the station and details of the shifts worked there and that three raiding parties were to have been used in the attack, comprising 65 men in total. In a newspaper interview Mr SL Pearce, Manchester Corporation’s chief electrical engineer, stated that the information on the workings of the station appeared to have been gathered in October when four men and two women had visited it on a Sunday morning by prior arrangement.

On 2nd January 1921 Police Constable Henry Bowden was patrolling some warehouses on Ordsall Lane when he came across ten men in the vicinity of a large grain warehouse, owned by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company. They supplied him with their names and addresses but he still insisted that they accompany him to the police station. When they reached Oldfield Road one of the men suddenly produced a revolver and fired at the policeman. Fortunately for him the bullet passed through his wrist and entered his shoulder. The men ran off.

A fire was later discovered at Baxendale in Miller Street, Shudehill. Police later arrested four men were in connection with the shooting: Patrick Flynn (22), Jeremiah Roddy (20), Daniel O’Connell (25) and Charles Forsythe (32). Forsythe was the landlord of a boarding house at 3 Poole Street , Salford, where the other men were lodgers. They and another man Patrick Waldron were later charged under the Defence of the Realm Act. On 22nd February Flynn was sentenced to ten years penal servitude for attempted murder.

On 13th February the IRA carried out a series of co-ordinated incendiary attacks on factories and warehouses in Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham and Stockport. In Manchester the targets included the wholesale druggists Potter & Clarke, Luna Street, Openshaw; the resin distillers Smith and Forrest, Holt Town; the Union Acid Company, Mitchell Street, Newton Heath and the Premier Waterproof & Rubber Company, Dantzic Street. During the attack on Smith & Forrest the watchman John Duffy was held up by three men armed with revolvers whilst they made preparations to fire the premises. When he made a sudden movement one of them fired at him but missed. One of the other men commented “That was a lucky escape, mate”. Finally Duffy made a run for it and again his luck held for the bullets the men fired after him missed their target.

Six days later the IRA mounted further incendiary attacks against ten farms in the Manchester area. The first outbreak took place shortly before 8pm and the rest followed shortly afterwards. The fires were set by soaking straw and hay with paraffin and setting it alight. The targets were Dairy House Farm, Dunham Massey; Dawson’s Farm, Dunham Massey; Baguley Hall Farm, Baguley; Barlow Hall Farm, Chorlton-cum-Hardy; Hardy Farm, Chorlton-cum-Hardy; Park Road Farm, Stretford; Lostock Farm, Urmston; Grange Farm, Bramhall; Cutter’s Hill Farm, Outwood, Radcliffe; and Hale Mill Farm, Culcheth near Leigh.

There was an eleventh target, namely Ivy Bank Farm, Sale. When the owner Mr. Jackson came out to investigate a disturbance shots were fired at him by a man in the yard. Fortunately for the farmer they went wide. Police later found a Webley revolver and can of paraffin in Dane Road. The cost of damage for the night’s work was estimated at £30,000. The geographical spread and the number of targets in the campaign of arson points to the existence of a well-organised and well-armed network of IRA members in the Manchester area. There was more attacks on 21st February at Poach Bank Farm, Bury and on 22nd February at Mill Hill Farm, Woodley, where a dutch barn was destroyed by fire

On 22nd March a PC Carr disturbed three men in a doorway whilst patrolling outside Manchester United’s football ground. He challenged them and in reply they fired at him but did not hit him. The officer was armed but had no time to fire back. A wallet was later found with a certificate from the Manchester Royal Infirmary in the name of Patrick Fennell and a picture of Terence MacSwiney. Fennell, who lived at 21 Bedford Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, was arrested the following day and appeared in court in early April, charged with the attempted murder of the police officer. His landlady was later fined for failing to register her lodger under the Aliens Restriction Act.

On 18th July Fennell was tried before Justice Rigby Swift. At first he was found guilty of being at the football ground but acquitted by the jury of the actual shooting. Then the judge made an extraordinary intervention. “That is not a verdict”, he told the jury,” If the jury find that Fennell was present with other people taking part in something where shooting might take place he is guilty.” The admonished jury then duly returned a verdict of guilty on the second charge. Sentencing Fennell to seven years penal servitude the judge said that in doing so he was assuming that Fennell’s was not the hand that fired the shot.

The most spectacular series of IRA operations in Manchester took place on 2nd April. The day began with a co-ordinated attacks by the IRA in the heart of the city and ended with the shooting dead of a young Irishman by the police in controversial circumstances. The morning’s attacks all took place between 6.00am and 7.00am. It seems likely that the IRA deliberately chose to strike early on a Saturday morning, knowing that there would be fewer passers-by or policemen and that the chosen targets would have only cleaners in them. At Bridgewater House on Whitworth Street four men armed with revolvers held up the cleaner and nightwatchman. Somehow the cleaner managed to slip out of the building and summoned assistance from a police constable named Boucher. When he challenged the men one of them fired at him, wounding the officer. The men then ran off and the policeman tried to give chase before collapsing in the street and being taken to the Infirmary by tram. Police later recovered a revolver and a can of petrol. At 38 George Street the raiding party held up the cleaner at gunpoint and started a fire while at 33 Portland Street three men held up the cleaner and set fire to the building, using some of the cotton goods lying about. The cleaner, who was trapped inside, raised the alarm and firemen arrived, who quickly put out the blaze.

Two men held up the cleaners at gunpoint in the Lyons State Cafe, Piccadilly, whilst a third member of the party tried to start a fire with paraffin. “We are doing now what you are doing in Ireland” said one of men and as they left they fired a shot above the heads of the staff. There were also attacks on three city centre hotels. At Victoria Hotel on Deansgate two men had spent the night there as visitors. After they left staff discovered a fire in their room which had been started using paraffin. There was a similar attempt at the Albion Hotel on Piccadilly, where a man giving his name as H Wilson from Bristol had spent a night. In the morning a chambermaid discovered him spreading petrol on a second floor staircase and setting fire to it. He managed to escape in the confusion, leaving a bag behind. At Blackfriars Hotel two men who had spent the night there under the names of Kay and Matthews left early in the morning, saying that they would be back for breakfast. Later staff found that their room was on fire. One witness described the attackers as “well-dressed young men, between 20 and 30 years of age, of gentlemanly appearance”. A number spoke with Irish accents.

Later that same evening a large number of armed police raised the Irish Club on Erskine Street, Hulme. As they entered the club there was shooting between police and two Irishmen. Constable Bailey and Detective Bolas later claimed that as they entered the building Sean Morgan had confronted them with a revolver in each hand and that therefore Bolas had shot him dead and also wounded Sean Wickham, after the latter had allegedly wounded Bailey. The police arrested a large number of men at the Irish Club and also picked up others over the weekend, including Paddy O’Donoghue. The death of Sean Morgan was registered on 14th April after an inquest, the cause of death being officially given as “Bullet wound to the head. Due to being shot by a police officer whilst the said John Morgan (sic) was resisting the said police officer in the legal exercise of his duty. Justifiable homicide”. A memorial to Sean Morgan was unveiled in Moston cemetery on the ninth anniversary of his death in 1930.
.
Despite the arrests of a number of senior figures, including Paddy O’Donoghue, the IRA campaign in Manchester continued. There were three attacks on 19th June on railway signalboxes in Manchester, similar to attacks that had been occurring in London. A signal box near Woodlands road station and a box near Fallowfield station were set alight. The attack on a signalbox near Marple station was more serious. Just after midnight Signalman Edward Axon was working alone when shots were fired at the box which wounded him in the groin and shoulder. Fortunately he was able to summon help and was taken to hospital.

A Treaty between the Republican Government and Britain was signed on 6 December 1921 and IRA operations halted. After a lengthy and sometimes bitter debate Dail Eireann approved the Treaty on 7th January 1922 with 64 votes in favour and 57 against. Sinn Fein had already effectively split into two camps with De Valera opposing the Treaty and Collins and Griffith supporting it. Most of the leadership of the IRA supported the Treaty, but many rank and file members and field commanders opposed, viewing it as a betrayal of everything they had fought for. De Valera resigned as President of Dail Eireann and was replaced by Arthur Griffith. Civil war broke out in June and lasted 12 months, leading to the defeat of the anti-Treaty forces.

The Civil War had some effect in Britain. On 4th June 1922 there were raids on a number of collieries in the St Helens area – including Bold, Sutton Manor, Clockface, Collins Green and Billinge – during which young men dressed in dark suits, armed with revolvers and seemingly well acquainted with the layout of the collieries stole explosives and detonators. There were similar raids in other parts of the country. In October there was an explosion in the Central Detective Office in a Stockport police station when a detonator that was being examined after a raid went off accidentally, slightly injuring a number of civilians and police, including the Chief Constable. John Mulryan of Wilton Street, Reddish was subsequently charged with being in possession of a quantity of arms and ammunition.

By the end of 1922 Irish Republican operations in Britain had come to an end.

I recently completed a logo for a good friend of mine who needed an identity for her freelancing. I played on the concept of stitching as I created a monogram and custom font. This was featured over at logogala.com recently as well.

“Being able to act like a tard with you means the world to me”

I love my friends. Love them to death. I cant believe how fast time is going, its so freaky and insane. I love life right now, even though Nick is being a very confused young boy. I dont really care right now, because life goes by too fast to take it slow. Im so sentimental and Im so overwhelmed.

Having a slight identity crisis, like I feel the need to dye my hair different colors and just change, which is probably normal. But it’ll pass. When I go back in a couple months and read through my archives, I’ll be fine. Who knows, so much will have changed by then probably.

10.10.08, first day Nick and I went out the first time.

10.17.08 first time i broke up with him

12.16.08 we went out the second time, and i fell in utter and complete love.

It will be exactly a year since we went out the first time this coming Saturday.

So much has changed…

I remember the first time I layed eyes on him ever in fifth grade. He was the new kid sitting at lunch playing his Gameboy, isolating himself from the world. I thought “Loser”. Too bad I didnt know that so-called loser would be the love of my life today who I kissed and he cheated on me and broke my heart.

So sad.

“and the people in the photographs look happier than you are…”

Ayooo

Spent the night at Janelly’s last night. I was kinda blah because Im still sick, but more so congested. We stayed up until like 3am just talking, it was pretty cool, shes one of my best friends :]

Today we went to the mall, which was fun but I had her take me home because my tummy was hurting D: I got some cool clothes though.

Well, I auditioned for the Dragon Report at school with Leigh. I should find out some time this week if I made it on or not, I think I have a pretty fair shot

Welllll that pretty much it. Oh wait, guess who has a new girlfriend? Nick.

The chick hes going out with is named Alicia and shes ugly as hell. Blech.

Right now Im on the fence with the whole ‘Nick’ issue. I think I have an equal shot either way. So who knows…

Oh, and I saw Chelsie on Wednesday. We were suppsoed to go to the movies but she got in trouble last minute and could only visit at school. She came after school to see her old teacher so Leigh and I waited for her. I cried right when I saw her, I missed her so much. Ms. Cornell even said I was a good friend because I was crying, which was odd, because Ms. Cornell is usually mean. But I guess everyone has their moments.

 Hollywood, California – Club Fetish Nation raises the grateful dead Saturday, October 10, 2009, for a night of twisted debauchery, featuring haunting hostess Hollie Stevens and a sideshow of necrotic delights presented by ‘Girls and Corpses Magazine’.

Stevens is looking forward to the event, “I’m thrilled that I was asked to be a featured guest for a Fetish Nation shindig. Everyone is talking about this party! When they asked me to be a part of it, I had to come down from San Francisco to attend. I’ll be signing my hit cult adult film ‘Clown Porn’, and my stuff from Girls and Corpses Magazine. Don’t miss out!”

As Executive Producer for the event, Cameron laid out the entertainment plans for the evening, “We are kicking off the Halloween season with an extravaganza of oddities. Along with our beautiful hostess, Hollie Stevens and the strange sideshow that Girls and Corpses is staging, we booked daredevil aerialist Leigh from Bound Lotus, stilt walkers, contortionists and scary clowns, sexy clowns and silly clowns heading to Fetish Nation this month. It is a dark carnival of epic proportions.”

After experiencing the depraved displays under the big top, denizens of Club Fetish Nation can catch their collective breath amid the art installations and vendors in the Dark Arts Corridor, or partake of the visual stimulations provided by legendary fetish artist Eric Kroll, who will unleash his latest video offerings in coordination with American Fetish Films.

Club Fetish Nation is powered by the generous sponsorship of www.Stockroom.com, Marquis America, Fetish Nation, Porno Dan and Immoral Productions and Vamps and Tramps, among many others.

Club Fetish Nation is located in the Circus Disco, at 6655 Santa Monica Blvd, in Hollywood. The doors open at 9:00 PM, and the party doesn’t stop until 4:00 AM.

There’s a theme to this Sunday Summary, methinks: First up, Hope Edelman guested over at Nameb

There’s a theme to this Sunday Summary, methinks:

First up, Hope Edelman guested over at Nameberry about seeing a name scrawled on a mailbox late in her pregnancy, and knowing that someone (other than the graffiti artist) was sending her a sign. Check out the whole story – Maya’s name was truly meant to be;

On the small screen, Mad Men’s Betty Draper had a strange hallucinatory dream while in labor and decided to name her baby boy after her dearly departed dad, Eugene. Don doesn’t seem to be on board – tune in tonight to see what happens. And thank your lucky stars that you didn’t give birth in the 1950s;

In the Names of the Future column, Laura Wattenberg considers Ily - pronounce it like Riley, without the first R. Don’t get it? Text ILY to your better half – I Love You. Get it? Kind of sweet, if terribly lightweight. And just one-L short of an espresso maker;

Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley put Nancy Leigh on the birth certificate! Schwoo! And the baby is adorable, so if they want to call her Naleigh? Oh well. I understand the urge to honor loved ones while still giving your a child a name of her own. Plus, Nancy Kelley is deliciously retro – it sounds like she should be solving mysteries in a kilt;

In this week’s Toronto Star column, the parents named their daughter London Elizabeth, for a few reasons – including the fun fact that the parents met in London, Ontario.

The theme? It’s all about how we make our choices. Often a name that seems atrocious, or just plain blah, seems different when you know the whole story.

In celeb news:

I’ll admit I don’t know anything about Colombian singer Juanes, except that he picks fabulous baby names. He and wife Karen have welcomed son Dante, a little brother for Luna and Paloma;

Swimmer Amanda Beard welcomed son Blaise Ray. I like the saintly Blaise, but it does seems like a curious pick for any parent with a career based on speed;

Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member Teresa Giudice and husband Joe have welcomed a daughter, Audriana. It’s an inevitable smush of Audrey and Adriana. Big sisters are Gia, Gabriella and Milania.

Elsewhere online, Nymbler announced their Top Ten for August. Never any surprises there: Charlotte, Ava, Benjamin, Amelia, Finn, Grace, Jack, Henry, Oliver and Claire occupy the top spots.

New debuts, on the other hand, are endlessly fascinating:

Khloe: How, oh how, did Khloe Kardashian konvince parents to spell Chloe with a K? Sure, it’s defensible. But it doesn’t seem very sophisticated.

Gypsy: A little bit stripper, a little bit Fleetwood Mac, a whole lotta huh? as a given name.

Gracen: Is this a girls’ twist on Grace – a sister for Madalyn and Addisyn? Or an alt spelling for Grayson?

Bodhi: He’s a starbaby choice, and a Sanskrit term for enlightment – could he also be the new Kai?

Fable: The fabulous Rebecca Woolf of Girl’s Gone Child named her second child Fable Luella. It’s the new Story, but more obviously feminine, boosted by her similarity to Hazel and Mabel.

Lastly, please note that Sebastiane – she of the truly unusual, usually international baby names, has moved! Legit Baby Names can now be found here. (That’s http://legitbabenames.wordpress.com/ if you prefer to type it into your browser, old school.) Stop by and bring your box cutter! I’m sure it will take some time to transfer all of her fabulous content.

That’s all for this week. As always, thanks for reading!

He estado toda la mañana tarareando “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

The Resistance is here.

Ah, September. The leaves change color, apples of every possible variety can be found in stacks at the Farmers’ Market and me?

I’m glued to the television:

Okay, not really. I missed the debut of the rebooted Melrose Place the other night. (Though I was sorry to miss Bronx’s mom in action.) This edition includes an Ella and a Violet, as well as a female Riley. On the masculine side, there’s Auggie and Jonah;

Also on TV, I hear that Glee’s characters include Finn (a boy) and Quinn (a girl). Of course they’re dating;

Before there was Twilight, there was The Vampire Diaries. Now a series on the CW, Elena is torn between blood-sucking centuries-young, suntan-challenged brothers Stefan and Damon;

Technically this is big screen news – So You Think You Can Dance alum Kherington Payne has a lead role as Alice in the big screen remake of Fame. But will Kherington catch on for girls? Or the Dynasty-esque original, Carrington?

Also on the big screen, there’s Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Stand by for boys called Aldo, after Brad Pitt’s hyper-masculine hero. (The character was named after a real-life tough guy actor from the 50s and 60s, Aldo Ray.) There’s also the heart-breaking Jewish-French Shosanna, a name memorably yelled by the creepy Nazi Sicherheitsdienst officer Hans Landa, and her alias Emmanuelle.

Onto starbaby news:

Yup, Nicole Richie and Benji Madden named their boy Sparrow. He’s sure to fly to the top of worst celeb baby name lists. Some rumblings suggest that Sparrow was inspired by a Simon & Garfunkel song, but the parents have yet to confirm the theory;

Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans welcomed a daughter named Ella Betsi Janet. Ella is fine and I adore Betsy. Janet is engagingly retro. But Ella Betsi together seems like a deconstructed version of Elizabeth. What’s next? Ella Noor? Nia Cole? The mind reels;

Country music’s Zac Brown and wife have welcomed a daughter named Georgia Sloan, little sister to Lucy and Justice – both girls, too;

Katherine Heigl has confirmed that she is about to follow in a family tradition and adopt from Korea. (Hat tip to Photoquilty.) The baby on the way is to be named Naleigh. It’s a smoosh of family names – mom Nancy and sister Leigh. It’s a lovely thought, but all of a sudden, Sparrow seems perfectly reasonable.

Should you find yourself in a pediatrician’s office this month, pick up the current issue of Parents Magazine – there’s an extensive article on baby naming. For true name aficionados, it is not exactly news. (Though the report of one couple’s use of a name consultant was interesting and it was among the better coverage I’ve seen in a mainstream publication.) But the big takeaway? Laura Wattenberg contributed her Top Ten picks for the most popular names of 2019:

GIRLS: Lila, Peyton, Lucy, Violet, Aubrey, Amelia, Piper, Ruby, Juliet and Harper.

BOYS: Miles, Rowan, Lincoln, Eli, Jude, Cooper, Wyatt, Ryder, Lucas and Henry.

I’ll have to do some thinking about her lists – some strike me as spot on, others … maybe not so much. But seriously, if Laura Wattenberg is touting them as the likely hot names of 2019? That alone might be enough to make it so.

Thanks for reading!

On a beautiful, but blustery day, in Chatham, MA (Cape Cod) at the magnificent Wequassett Resort, Anette Herrera & Ryan Spoon got married. Our 5 grandchildren were graced with the honor of serving as flower girls & ring bearers. Here they are attempting to pose for some photographs. I just noticed that Chase must have switched his handsome shoes for his red Crocs … probably because the shoes were uncomfortable.

What is one of your number one ultimate dream and goal? My goal has been the same since I was a little girl. I have always wanted to be a famous singer. I used to sing to my daddy and have him sing too. I also sang at Village Baptist Church when I was young. I was in plays, where I had a solos, I was in the choir; I was pretty much involved in everything that had to do with singing/performing. But then one day, all of that changed. My mom convinced me to visit Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, and then before I knew it, I changed churches. I didn’t like it at all, I wanted to go back to my old church, where they accepted me, and where they let me sing solos without having to be a perfectionist. When I joined Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, I pretty much stopped getting involved with singing and doing plays. Snyder hardly puts on plays. It seems as if you have to have the “right voice” if you are trying out for a solo. It just was too chaotic, so I pretty much stopped. Now I am attempting to get back on track. I am writing my own songs, which I have bunches and bunches of songs. I am going to try to fit in guitar lessons from somewhere; I don’t know where yet. I am not going to give up no matter what people say, no matter what they may think of me. I am determined to accomplish my dream and I have much faith in doing so.
