We don’t leave the house with the baby after 5pm. That’s a law. We try to keep our evening tantrums for private audience only. But then we don’t sleep much… so we forget and take Leila to Target on a Saturday… AFTER 5pm. I realized that about half way through the store when she suddenly became really quiet (never a good sign). And pretty much immediately I was all OMG! OMG! RUUUUUUN! RUUUUN to the checkout! And if there is a line… Well… there was no line, no casualties and Leila?… was just a model citizen – chilling in the cart, looking around and casually clapping.

No one has ever called Leila “a calm baby”. We are more used to “spirited”, “enthusiastic”, “big personality” or just plain “crazy” (in the best way possible, of course) but “calm”? That was the first.

Even as a fetus Leila was bouncing off the walls. I remember during the last semester my doctor asked me to set aside an hour a day during which I would have to count 10 baby kicks. She also gave me a sheet with suggestions on how to make the baby kick in case it wasn’t happening. You know things like “drink orange juice”, “cold water”, “ride a roller coaster” etc, etc…. I never understood the need for those suggestions. I could have given you 10 kicks at any given moment in about 60 seconds or less.

I know right about now all my childless readers are wondering what I’ve been drinking (rum and coke… since you’ve asked). But I digress…. Leila just went from crawling to some sort of jumping on her knees with her arms up in the air. And I don’t even have a proper English word in my vocabulary to describe her recent sounds… but I am pretty sure that our neighbors are about to call PETA to come and save the wild animal we keep in our apartment. The screeching is so loud I am no longer able to have a conversation when she is “in the zone”. How do you tell an eight month old to use her inside voice? I don’t know either, but at our baby sign language class the instructor showed us a “quiet please” sign, even though the topic for that particular day was “colors”… coincidence?

The Energizer Bunny got nothing on Leila. So much life and joyfulness I only wish I could bottle it. But that is exactly what got us kicked out of the library’s “Lap Sit/Story Time” for pre-walkers (my ass). All the songs and story telling was just too much stimulation which drove her right into mad crawling, jumping and squealing with happiness. I tried distracting her so she would just sit in my lap, but was not going to force her. She was clearly happy to be there. Every time Leila would scream the instructor would purposely STOP reading, PAUSE, repeat the sentence and ask if I could ask Leila to sit in my lap. No problem!

Honey, could you just sit on mama’s lap and be quiet for a moment?

Sure, mom! Anything for you!

So that went well. I thought.

After the class I was approached by one of the library workers and very politely asked if I MAYBE….POSSIBLY…. think that Leila is not ready for this class” At that stage I was just too exhausted and irritated. I know Leila is a bit “enthusiastic” but COME ON! This class if for babies! Anyway, it was a free class and she didn’t say we couldn’t come back anymore, but she didn’t say “see you next week!” either…. The real problem is how do I tell my eight-month old that she just got kicked out of the library? Well, either way… we couldn’t be prouder.

Have you met Leila?  She’s a bergle.  You’ve never heard of a bergle?  That’s okay.  It’s quite possible there’s only one in the world, and she’s it.

Somewhere in Georgia, a Bernese Mountain Dog mated with a Beagle and Leila was born.  She probably caused a little trouble – chasing squirrels, jumping, and being very sneaky – but that’s just what bergles do (apparently).  Either someone couldn’t accept her bergleness and selfishly gave her up, or she ran away and got picked up by the doggy police.  She hasn’t found the words to tell us her story yet.  Regardless, she was discovered down south in a shelter with very little chance of having the life she deserves, and transported here to upstate New York where she had a better chance of being adopted.  So now she’s part of our family, enjoying all the same luxuries as Byron and having great adventures with me in the outdoors.

Leila mostly loves to run, but cuddling, chewing her toys, asking for treats, and playing at the dog park are fun too.  Lately she’s been practicing her fetching, and she has learned how to play dead and roll over.  By the way, “Play Dead” works wonders at feeding times when we want to encourage calm behavior.  We have Joel to thank for that trick.

She’s a lucky girl, and I feel very lucky to have her.  We trained together this summer for my half marathon.  It takes 10 miles to tire her out.  Her affectionate and goofy personality make her rambunctious moments and intense obsession with squirrels more tolerable.  We love her for who she is, including all of her berglish behaviors.

The name Leila is Persian and means “dark-haired beauty.”  Leila is also the name of a character in one of Lord Byron’s poems.  So it seemed fitting that we call our bergle the same.

Ob die Lücke, die sein Tod gerissen hat, geschlossen werden kann, wird die Zeit klären.

Tatsache ist:

Nachdem er monatelang mit einer bakteriellen Infektion gekämpft hatte und selbst das Tropeninstitut ratlos war, soll es ihm inzwischen besser gegangen sein. Vor drei Jahren verloren er und seine Frau die zweijährige Tochter Lara. Neues Familienglück stellte sich erst vor wenigen Monaten mit dem Adoptiv-Mädchen Leila ein. Immer wieder erlitt er Rückschläge … immer wieder steckte er sie weg und machte weiter. Aber „immer wieder“ kann eben selbst für starke Menschen irgendwann das berüchtigte „eine Mal zuviel“ sein. Vielleicht war es das. Denn auch der stärkste Mensch hat irgendwo seine Grenzen.

Tatsache ist auch:

Er war einer der ganz wenigen Menschen, über den ich niemals auch nur den Anschein einer negativen Äußerung gehört habe. Und auch nicht von ihm über andere Menschen. Er war sehr engagiert gegen Rechtsradikalismus und vor allem für Kinder und Tiere in Not. Er war allseits und offensichtlich ausnahmslos beliebt. Beliebt für seine natürliche Art als Mensch. Beliebt als Keeper von Hannover 96 und die optionale Nummer 1 im Tor der Deutschen Nationalelf in Südafrika 2010.

Schmerzliche Tatsache ist:

Robert Enke ist gestern Abend leider zum letzten Mal vom Platz gegangen: Gegen 18:30 Uhr wurde er in der Nähe von Hannover von einem Zug erfasst und tödlich verletzt. Die Fassungslosigkeit, die mit diesem Tod verbunden ist, scheint grenzenlos zu sein. Bereits wenige Stunden nach seinem Ableben waren aus der ganzen Welt Tausende von Beileidsbekundungen auf seiner Homepage hinterlassen worden. Trauer über den Verlust, Mitgefühl mit seiner Frau und seiner kleinen Tochter, Bedauern darüber, dass mit ihm einer der besten Keeper aller Zeiten gegangen ist. Ein Journalist entschuldigte sich sogar neben dem Bekunden seines Beileids dafür, diese Nachricht verbreiten zu müssen.

In erster Linie gilt die Trauer jedoch dem Menschen Robert Enke, nicht dem Keeper. „Nur“ einem Menschen? Nein, wohl eher einem der letzten tatsächlichen Menschen, die es im Fußball-„Business“ überhaupt noch gegeben hat. Einem Menschen, der sich noch ehrlich freuen konnte und dem seine Fans nicht nur sprichwörtlich in guten und in schlechten Zeiten stets beigestanden haben. Einem Menschen, der ebenso immer für seine Fans da war. Offen, ehrlich und stets fair. Eben einfach als Mensch.

Und wieder handelt es sich um eine dieser verdammten Situationen, die Tausende Fragen aufwirft, auf die es jedoch keine Antworten gibt. Zumindest keine zufrieden stellenden. Was bleibt ist nur ein leises „Tschüs“, gute Gedanken an seine Frau und Tochter, sowie die Akzeptanz für seine Entscheidung …

… wenn es denn seine war.

This afternoon as been an eventful one in the Who’s Jack office. Earlier on myself and Leila went down to NailGirls in Islington and had a lovely manicure which you’ll be able to see up on This Is Jack TV in the coming weeks.

Also this afternoon the whole Who’s Jack massive have been making merkins. If you don’t know what one of those is, google it. We’ve made festive merkins, nautical merkins, glittery merkins and ones with russian dolls on. To see is to believe so make sure you pick up the next issue of Who’s Jack to see more. I’m really really busy so I’ll try to be quick and not spend time expressing my frustration about some points. But you people should know that when I put something in bold, it means that “I’m really frustrated about it but I won’t make a kittle of fish out of it because I can’t afford time on that actually”.

*Oru’ is back to dear Little Fez for two days. This Friday is a national celebration in Morocco: the Green March. I remember myself having 7 free days but now that I’m at an engineering school, it’s only one day out -_-. I intend on doing many things during these two days, but first let’s post something here to waste some time 8D.

*Forum-entreprises of ENSEM began its activities and I have to take care of the layout of the sponsoring file. I think I’ll go on with Photofiltre for the samples because I lost my AP 7 and I don’t really know how to work with the CS4 (need to partice that too >_<”). I also need to learn about InDesign since the teacher in charge of this extra-material doesn’t seem to be keen on starting. Raaaaah, I’ve got so much will *~*, so little time.

*Mecha club haven’t accepted the noobies yet and finally, I know why: -_- the guy in charge of the club -the members, too in general- wouldn’t accept noobies wbecause they didn’t have their “special bullying day”: this day heralds the end of bullying.. Noobies get mud all over them, dress in plastic bags and bear many other bullying activities. Usually, the headmaster gives his approval to the elders to make this journey. However, this year, an elder bullied a heart patient who ended up in an ambulance. So, the director refused the making out of the special B. day this time. We were asked to sign a petition so as the headmaster would agree to do it at the end, but really: who is f*ed up enough to sign for his/her own humiliation day u_u? So, elders decided that we won’t be integrated in clubs and won’t benefit from the papers of the previous years. Fortunately, the electric and programming ones didn’t follow these pathetic blackmailings. But the mecha club didn’t give up -_-. Incredible to notice that the cliché idea saying Mecha people are such a bunch of agressive dumb people could be easily proved. They can’t even handle a real justified discussion about all this childish mean behaviour…Ok, I really need to forget about this thing because it really….huuuuun >_<”

*I got the approval of our students’ union to display AMJR’s notices on our boards. AMJR is an abbreviation for Moroccan Association of Young Road-Users, a group of EHTP students who sensitize youngsters about traffic accidents, road dangers and rules. In 2007, this philanthropic association was described by the ONU as “the ambassador of the United Nations for road safety of youth in Morocco“. If you’re interested, here’s the website of the association (the English version is still under construction).

*Leïla is going to set the world on fire with the project she intends to do with her group. I won’t speak much about it u_u but you’ll get to be the first ones to know about it =3. Just for details, there’s this material in EHTP (which can be translated by Hassania School of Public Works, a Moroccan engineering school which delivers civil, hydraulic, computer and electric engineering degrees) called PIP -Personal Initiative Project- that every first year student need to cover. As you may have observed, it’s a project. So, you need to interact with people, associations and so on….Students are free to choose any subject as long as they’ll be able to carry it through. It’s a good original and hectic idea which needs a lot of work and preparation…Ah! also money 8B. Stay tuned about this, you’ll be stunned ^^.

*My first exam will be on the next Saturday. The fieldworks began and I’m so excited about machining, building circuits and measuring ^o^. I need to study, study, study >~<

We have a big day in the office today. After sitting on a pretty plush jet half of the day yesterday today is all about nails and merkins.

Laura has gone off to Nail Girls to meet Leila who will be going through a step by step nail guide for This is Jack TV and getting some beautiful nails herself for review in our extensions section in the Dec issue. After this little excursion the girls will be back in the office to partake in a merkin making master class, the only problem being that we don’t currently have a model, or the body stocking that we were planning on finding which will most likely result in Leila modeling for us. We have been assured that if she can wear at least heels with it she will do it….. updates soon and suggestions on materials to use welcome.

I love my 16 hour/no shower days. I feel refreshed, beautiful and sexy. I should ask Dennis if he still wants that second baby because really… can I be any more exhausted?

Babysitter #3 was here today. I like her. Let’s hope the third time is the charm. I used to hire people for a living. I like to believe I have seen it all: a manager who listed her email on the CV as “sexykitten”, a guy who asked for a minute to pray (out loud) before and after the interview (in the interview room) and you would be surprised how many people describe their ex-boss as an “idiot” or “asshole”. I always imagine them saying that to their boss too. Just try saying it out loud in your most cheerful and delightful high-pitch voice:

I really thought hiring a babysitter would be a breeze. And here I am almost 8 months into this business of motherhood pulling my hair out trying to find a person who doesn’t think I will just hand them out cash for watching my TV… oh wait… I think I actually did that.

After the disaster with babysitter #1 we were just too excited to find a person who didn’t treat our child as a 2 year old. The idea was to train her to put Leila to bed while we enjoy our date night. However by the time we actually finished training the babysitter #2, Leila switched to much earlier bed time which meant she was always asleep when #2 started her shift. So I was literally handing out cash to a stranger for sitting in my living room and watching TV while baby was asleep. I have to admit it bugged me a little that she wouldn’t offer to do anything else, but when we hired her we all agreed that she will only take care of the baby. A deal is a deal and I was honoring it. However being consistently late, confusing Thursdays with Fridays and not showing up on the day I actually had to drive to the airport to pick up my mother… was not something we have agreed on. So that was the end of #2.

(There has to be some sort of reality TV show similar to the “Bachelor” where a mother gets to pick a perfect babysitter and they live happily ever after)

Dennis has been working insane amount of hours. If this continues I will have to tell Leila that daddy is like Santa Clause – you will never see him, but once you wake up there is going to be an evidence that he has visited us (paid bills, for example…) Unfortunately some people at daddy’s work have never heard of a five-day work week either. This is all temporary. Or at least this is what I am told. Meanwhile I need to shower. I could of course shower now instead of typing this valuable, high-priority post, but then that would mean that I have it all together.

So for numerous reasons we will have babysitter #3 come in during the day while I am at home. Her job will be to play with Leila for a couple of hours while I go to appointments, cook, clean and iron…. or just have a Mimosa at the pool.

Magnus Muhr creates  like no other, as you can see from above.   Yes, he finds inspiration in the simplest things.  How come nobody ever thought of this before?  Go on Magnus.  Maybe I like this series so much because I have recently come across a great way of killing flies when they enter the kitchen.  Using an empty plastic water bottle.  Got this theory that the impending doom of the clear plastic bottle isn’t detected until it’s too late, unless I’m a bit slow.  I’d estimate the kill rate is about 95%.  It’s not known if Magnus put his models into early retirement, or if they died from natural causes.

And now sports….I was digging through some of the six cd’s that Leila gave me after her appearance at this years Clandestino Festival.  Included are dialogues on art by such illuminaries as Dali, (and others…can’t read the writing on the cd’s sorry,)  Also among the pile was a track that El-P used for his Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixx2, it’s by Modeselektor, and my man El-P added vocals and some El-P sonics to the track for his mixtape version.  Surprised the hell outta me believe.

One of the highlights for me and others I know at Womad Las Palmas a couple years ago was Justin Adams, yes he the guitarist with Robert Plant and producer of the latest Tinariwen albums.  I believe he was supposed to perform with Judleh Camara, but visa problems I believe put a spanner in that idea, so Justin and his percussion partner knocked off a set of blues centered improvisation.  For this years Womad Las Palmas, it’s all set to go with Justin and Judleh booked to perform tracks from their new collaborative effort.  If your in the area, make an effort to catch the set if UK/African blues strokes your fancy.  Other artists confirmed are viewable on the Judleh link above.

1,5 msk flingsalt
2dl durumvetemjöl
10-11dl vetemjöl special

Smör och sesamfrö eller vallmofrö till brödformarna
Flingsalt

Smula jästen i en bunk och tillsätt vatten, honung, sirap, olivolja och flingsalt. Blanda tills jästen är löst. Tillsätt mjöl tills degen går ihop och blir mjuk och elastisk. Jäs under bakduk i ca 40 min.

Dela degen i 2 delar, knåda lite och forma till en limpa. Lägg ner degen i en smörjd och bröad brödform. Låt jäsa ca 30 min.

Sätt ugnen på 225 grader (200 om du har varmluftsugn).

Pensla limporna med vatten och strö över flingsalt. Dra ett snitt med en vass kniv och ställ sedan in formarna i mitten av ugnen. Grädda i 25-30 min. Låt bröden kallna på galler.

last week marked the release of the long-anticipated Warp 20 box set and it is a colossus. Celebrating the groundbreaking label’s 20 years strong, it contains 2 CDs of crowdsourced best-of Warp singles, 2 CDs of Warp artists covering a favourite from the Warp catalogue, 3 10″ records of tracks previously unreleased on Warp, 1 CD of continuous mix (a la Blech or the more recent Listen Play Repeat) and 2 10″ records of 5 second loops for the heads to freak on.

admittedly i am just the kind of Reasonable People that this kind of thing is marketed to (i cast votes for the Chosen set) and which finds joy in every bit of it – even the stuff that is really inaccessible, as the releases sometimes has been. but even if you are not in this particular class there is some remarkable music here across so many genres it blows the mind.

case in point: this cover of one of the most powerful tracks from the 2001 Aphex Twin glitch masterwork, Drukqs, a double album which from cover to cover to cover is anthemic to a certain time in my life. my feeling upon hearing (many times repeated now) this version by Warp artist Leila is that of having come full circle: ironically enough it was on the previously mentioned Drukqs that i began to recognize the pure and simple beauty of the piano, so it seems all too fitting to hear Vordhosbn as Leila offers it on Recreated.

Leila has been eating like a champ for the past four days. And I just know that as soon as I publish this post she will stop eating again. Because that is how this universe works. Just like that time I wrote about how I haven’t changed a poopy diaper in weeks… The second I pressed “publish” the poop hit the diaper. With a VENGEANCE.

I am still putting Leila on the potty in the mornings and after lunch, but since we started solids the poop schedule got a little less predictable. She started pooping three times per day. Three meals in, three meals out… So poopy diapers are no longer completely avoidable, unless we spend all day at home. I know a few moms who are successfully using the Elimination Communication technique – you can hold the baby over the actual toilet or sink… but since my mom left I have no real motivation to take our potty training to the next level. My expectations for myself, as a mother, are pretty low – in fact, I just lowered them to the point where they all have been met already. Besides, I am sure that after Leila realizes how bulky her butt looks in diapers she will be out of them before I know it.

Since the day Leila was born the usage of the word ‘poop’ in our household has pretty much tripled. Who knew that the color, the frequency and the smell of your baby’s poop are key factors in determining your child’s IQ. I am shitting you (pun intended), of course, but if you don’t have children and ever end up having an awkward silence with the new mom – ‘poop’ is an excellent ice-breaker. That’s how I’ve learned about the Elimination Communication. It all sounded a little strange and a bit crazy – you know… my kind of stuff. I think using the potty instead of the actual toilet or sink definitely made it easier for me and less stressful for Leila. Not sure how much it helped that the potty played music… but wouldn’t you go to bathroom more often if your toilet cheered for you?! Yeah, me neither. But it works for babies.

People keep asking me if it is really worth it. Honestly, I have no idea. My friend said that it sounds like a typical potty training only this way I will be training for a year. She is probably right. The only positive thing (other than not having to deal with explosive poonamies and saving a few diapers) is that I probably won’t have to deal with the “potty fear”- I heard that some kids don’t like to even sit on it. So really hard to tell yet, but I am sure it has to do a lot with a child’s personality.

As I was typing this post my friend texted me saying that she just purchased the same Princess Potty for her 6 months old daughter. Will let you know if it worked for her. And who knows, maybe we will start a Princess Potty revolution.

This morning smelled like the end of the summer. It was early in the morning and Leila was refusing to play or nap… just crawling around, looking for trouble. Finally I packed her in the stroller and dragged my sleepy behind to the lake.

It was really quiet, windy and looked liked it was about to rain. Except it never did. I don’t know if it was the weather, the early morning or the lack of sleep but suddenly it hit me how incredibly fast Leila was growing. She is six and a half months old! She is sitting, crawling, pulling herself up, eating solids and is a proud owner of two bottom teeth. Also… she stopped napping. She took a 20 minute snooze at the lake and an hour long nap in the car, but that was it. The rest of the time she was busy defending her daredevil title – pulling herself up (once – using the cat) and letting go…. miscalculating the angle needed to turn the corner…. jumping up from the sitting position followed by a face-plant… sitting up and throwing herself backwards (hoping to land on something soft?) … and licking the living room carpet (because she couldn’t pick it up). She crawls so fast she actually runs out of breath.

And just 2 months ago she was playing on her floor mat while I was slowly sipping my coffee and actually thinking… “I wonder when she will start moving?” BAM! Let’s not talk about walking yet, because I am afraid she will start running before the end of this month.

You know how people always tell you “awww, they grow up so fast!”… well… this time they did not lie. I showed my mom a few old videos of Leila and I am just in shock how much she has changed. Here is one of the older videos when she was about 11-12 weeks old:

I’m about to finish packing. Tomorrow, we’ll be heading early to Casablanca. By the end of the day, I would be settled  in a room of three and trying to meet Leïla, who’ll be studying in the engineering school in front of ours.

It’s definitely tense around here: the family’s last bye-bye, the uncle’s computer which wasn’t well-rebooted by me, the uncle himself suffering from a lack of Ricochet’s playing, the suitcases which don’t fit…etc etc

In addition to this -_-, I’m heading to a place where there’s no internet connection so people, you may get prepared for a Hiatus-like status around Jigsaw Critter. However, I won’t miss a chance to type in my lap (which is named PX-1 by the way u_u, nice to meet you, nice to meet you) anything I find worth typing. So maybe, you’ll get a bonus of posts whenever I come into the Wired =3

Adoro uma história que vi uma vez, contada por Marina W , sobre Leila Diniz.

Pelo que eu me lembro, ela e uns intelectuais dos anos 70 tinham ido ver um filme do Godard, e sabe como é intelectual -  depois foram para um bar e, lá, começaram a discutir pontos de vista, ideologias, assuntos técnicos e etc.

Lá para o meio da conversa, Leila se posicionou: “- Eu acho que ela gostava dele.”

Às vezes, a vida é simples assim, e, de todas as obrigações chatas que esperam que a gente cumpra, a que mais me irrita é a obrigação de ser inteligente (com o tipo de inteligência que se espera da gente).

A vida, pra mim, é muito simples - eu sempre penso nessa frase quando me perguntam algo para o qual eu deva mostrar alguma pretensa inteligência – “eu acho que ela gostava dele“, e pronto, e isso também é tão importante quanto as outras coisas. Leila estava certa.

We cannot go any further into our dissection of last week’s omnibus without first reflecting on the biggest OMG moment to happen in the ‘Oaks for a long while.

Oh yes, just when we’d lost faith and were lamenting the shitness of Hollyoaks of late, it unleashes something so marvellous that we almost choked on our mid afternoon bacon sandwich with joy:

When Newt stopped taking his anti-schizo pills last week we warned that only the return of our fave fro’d alter ego would make this particular plot reoccurrence worth our time and happily the Hollyverse agreed. Only a brief appearance of the imaginary one – right at the end, as paranoid android Newt gibbered behind a fence – but that was enough. Insanity is back in the village. Let the good times roll!

hollyoaks: the movie

Yah, last week’s ‘Oaks was a veritable tsunami of a film student moment – and a very ambitious one at that, with a twisty turny plot that switched (sometimes confusingly) between flashbacks of the young ‘uns ill-fated trip to the woods and its present day repercussions, a whodunnit and a fancy Wizard of Oz motif. Two thumbs fresh.

Another mentalist returned to the village last week and that be evil chav Gaz, who proceeded to cause all manner of upset – mugging Mercy, tearing Lauren’s new top and kicking a football against the doors of Il Gnosh – incurring the wrath of all and sundry, in particular that of reformed chav scum Ste. Gaz’s final act of mischief (stalking Newt and co to their country hideaway for a spot of Wizard of Oz pretentiousness, icky demands of sex from Anita and rather hot homoeroticism with Newt) was rewarded with a rock interfacing with his skull. Shame, cos we were starting to find him rather hot – luckily, you can never keep a good chav down, see OMG moment below.

Frankie uses hitherto uncelebrated legal skills by being Newt’s legal representation: Mercy and Malachy almost go to Canadia. Cue lots of drama and shouting. Then they don’t. Mercy and Malachy almost spend £3k on sperm washing in order to plant a bun in Mercy’s oven. Cue lots of drama and shouting. Then they don’t. Sigh; Mercy is first mugged and later falls over in her slag heels; def sexual tension between Mercy and Calvin; Leila and Archie shag; no new batteries for the remote in the McQueen household – Myra has used them in her vibrator. Ewww; we learn that as a child Mercy killed her pet hamster Trevor via a freak electrocution-by-curling tongs accident.
