The good people from The Danger in Nyc made a sound / art installation for the Scope Art Fair in Miami and hence created an electronic Gamelan Orchestra for the entrance of the art festival! The Riot Temple: A visceral exploration of worship & violence. It’s the world’s first fully robotic Gamelan Orchestra. MIDI sequences control 117 robotic striking mechanisms and produce intricately woven rhythmic sound. It’s a collaboration between The League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots (LEMUR) and composer Zemi17.

“Performances follow an arc similar to classic Indonesian gatherings, where stories from great epics, such as the Ramayana, are told and settings given in words that are continued in music. In fact it’s a combination of sculpture, concert and ritual. The presentation of The Riot Temple includes a ceremony with a dozen performers as walking ghosts encircle the outer parameter. Anointing the crowd with offerings, the ghosts become companion spirits as bystanders become participants, drawing the audience inward towards a distilled and finite moment.”

That’s the freakiest thing I’ve seen so far, especially since I used to play the traditional Gamelan back in Berlin 7 years ago, before going to Barcelona, with which we performed at the Carneval of Cultures. The iniciator Kendra Stepputat had made the huge incredible effort to bring a whole Gamela  Ochestra equipment from Bali to Berlin, including huge gongs, drums, ceng ceng’s and all sorts of different reyongs.

The lemur is under threat from a “timber mafia” which is pillaging the island’s forests for profit, conservation groups have warned.

Madagascar, which has been isolated from landmasses for more than 160m years, is the world’s fourth largest island and a “conservation hotspot” with thousands of exotic species found only here. These include nearly 100 species of lemur, six of which are deemed critically endangered.

But decades of logging, mining and farming have destroyed 90 per cent of Madagascar’s forests, though the rate has slowed in the past two decades, the Guardian reports.

The former president, Marc Ravalomanana, was praised for putting 6m hectares under protection and backing eco-friendly community projects and sustainable farming. But Mr Ravalomanana was ousted in March in a violent coup that led to a “gold rush” of armed loggers and poachers.

Now lemurs’ natural habitat is again under threat from the accelerating deforestation.

In addition, the endangered animals are being hunted for bushmeat, either to be eaten by drought-afflicted local populations or sold as a roasted delicacy in city restaurants.

Dr Hantanirina Rasamimanana, a researcher and teacher at Antananarivo University, told the paper: “Deforestation is always a problem, but in these past five months bushmeat is also very dangerous. People are desperate because of the lack of rain.”

She added: “Here in Madagascar, when there is a political change, everything is burning. It’s always like that. They burn, they cut, they destroy, they steal. “If they don’t stop, I am afraid that some species will become extinct.” Conservationists say that armed gangs are exploiting the security vacuum to pillage rosewood and ebony from supposedly protected forests on behalf of a so-called “timber mafia”.

This year an estimated $100m worth of hardwood has been cut down and sold, mostly to China to be turned into furniture.

Found this limerick* in a book of email correspondence between me and a friend. It’s the first entry in the book, which she made as a keepsake for me, and is dated the 15th August 2000.

What a decade it’s been! I don’t just mean the big things which have happened during that time: that relationship, the MSc, the depression, the phalloplasty; but the small things too: the subtle changes in hopes, dreams and fears. Still, i remain fortunate in my friends and our conversations. And whether or not i remember to say it, i remain deeply grateful for both.

* One of my better efforts. You would not want to read the worse ones, believe me.

This was my favourite of all the animals at Dudley Zoo. I loved how they were all sitting in groups. Apparently they sit in the Lotus position to sun bath in the morning and they will do this as a group activity. I thought it would be brilliant to edit in some cups of tea but I couldn’t ruin the cuteness.

Probably the two best peer-reviewed science journals in the world are Science and Nature. Well, Nature is now reporting on a new piece of research just released showing that the Ida fossil, which was touted by Darwinists as THE MISSING LINK, is actually not a part of human ancestry at all. It’s related to lemur ancestry!

Here’s the Nature story:

A 37-million-year-old fossil primate from Egypt, described today in Nature¹, moves a controversial German fossil known as Ida out of the human lineage.

Teeth and ankle bones of the new Egyptian specimen show that the 47-million-year-old Ida, formally called Darwinius masillae, is not in the lineage of early apes and monkeys (haplorhines), but instead belongs to ancestors (adapiforms) of today’s lemurs and lorises.

We at Dead Celebrity of the Week are saddened by the death of Charlie Sheen’s penis aka the Sheenis, but we’re not surprised. Sheenis was getting into trouble from the very beginning. At age 4 he was found inside the neighbors tabby cat and was subsequently ordered to undergo court ordered psychiatric treatment. Friends have speculated that when Carlos Irwin Estévez changed his name to Charlie Sheen, Sheenis was confused. Two friends close to Sheenis were quoted as saying, “the confusion weighed heavily on his tiny head. Soon he was hanging with a rough crowd and spending his time in the wrong kind of people.”

The exact details surrounding the death of Sheenis were not immediately available, but we have been able to learn that he apparently died of a yet undiscovered sexually transmitted disease. The news about the rare STD would appear to confirm the rumors that Sheenis is being held by the CDC for observation. Mr. Sheen apparently contracted the newly discovered “Sheen virus” when a rogue remote controlled vibrator ruptured his colon. A prostitute and a lemur were detained at the scene. The lemur is being held for questioning and is suspected of operating a class III sex toy while under the influence of a controlled substance.

Sheenis was close to both Mr. Sheen’s testicles and his ailing liver. Mr. Sheen’s testicles could not be reached for comment and are rumored to still be in the possession of Denise Richards. Mr. Sheen’s liver is currently hospitalized. We were able to reach him, but he would not comment on the death of his longtime friend. It is rumored that Mr. Sheen’s liver is secretly pleased with the news. Speculation is rampant that the death of Sheenis will result in an increase of funds at the disposal of Mr. Sheen’s liver.

The public has had mixed reactions to the news, but the outcry from the hooker community has been breathtaking. In these dark economic times, the death of Sheenis has hit the hookers hard. Economists at the Wall Street Journal speculate that this is one blow the hooker community could have done without. The tranny hookers were especially grief stricken. Their spokesperson, Kayla Coxx, was quoted as saying, “we all knew Sheenis well and will miss his money terribly.”

Martin Sheen, Charlie’s father, took the news especially hard. He held an impromptu press conference outside his home where he speculated that his son’s penis was likely the victim of a government conspiracy. When we asked about his father’s assertions, Charlie echoed his father’s claims and even named George Bush as the likely party responsible for the death of Sheenis. When asked about the lemur, Sheen screamed “where” and then burst into tears. He was sedated by the medical staff, while we were escorted from the hospital room.

We at Dead Celebrity of the Week would like to extend our sympathies to Mr. Sheen, Mr. Sheen’s testicles, hookers and the 9-11 truther movement. Rest In Piece, Sheenis.

I learned today that there is a lemur, the Sifaka, that dances, only to then learn that that’s not true. Apparently they just can’t walk on the ground very well, so they hop around sideways in what looks like a ‘dance’. What a sad day. And one more from the Handcar Regatta Sunday — I got to pet a baby lemur and it is SO SOFT AND CUTE AND HAS RUBBERY LITTLE PALMS AND HOLDS YOUR FINGERS AND OMG OMG OMG OMG. The naturalist said it is illegal to own one in California but no judge would ever convict me.

Marknad på Skansen, som för hundra år sen, pågår denna helg. Igår införskaffade jag denna diskborste av en riktig borstbindare. Häst- och kohår bildar mönstret. Borstbindaren berättade om en liten unge som noga studerat borsten och sen förkunnat “Såna djur finns här på Skansen”.

VERA kayıtları, Özgür’ün ve benim gitar line’larımın kaydedilmesinden sonra bir mola verdi… Önümüzdeki hafta Mustafa’nın gitarları, saksafon kayıtları vs. vs., yani işimiz yine çok. Ancak hırslıyız, istekliyiz, enerji doluyuz…

Bu kayıtlarda soundumuzun değişeceğini biliyorduk, ancak bu kadarını ben de tahmin edememiştim. Hain, Bir Sorun Yok ve Partide adlı 3 şarkımızda birçok tarzın etkilerini yakalayabileceksiniz. Bizim açımızdan son derece farklı bir tecrübe oldu, olmaya da devam ediyor…

Tabi ki, sounddaki değişiklikler, sahneye de yansıyacak. Gitaristimiz Özgür’ü, birçok şarkıda laptop ve midi klavyenin başında altyapıları yönetirken göreceksiniz… Bazı şarkılarımızda, Uluç Büyükbeşe saksafonu ile bize eşlik edecek, benim yeniden gitara dönmem söz konusu, bakalım bu konuda ne karar vereceğiz Eski şarkılarımıza da altyapılar hazırladık, bazı düzenlemelerde de değişiklikler yaptık… 2 yıldır sürdürdüğümüz Hard Rock geleneğinden bütünüyle kopuyoruz diyebilirim, isimlendirmek gerekirse de;

Kusura bakmayın ancak ben şu anda isimlendiremiyorum, umarım zaman içinde isimlendirebiliriz… Şimdilik, Yeni Nesil Rock soundu demek hepimize yetiyor …

Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Müzik Kulübü gruplarından Jukebox ve Lemur‘un da sahne alacağı bu geceye katılırsanız, birçok sürprizle karşılacaksınız… Tamamiyle beste çalınacak bu konserde, yukarıda kaba taslak bahsettiğim değişikliklerin büyük çoğunluğunu görebileceğinizi tahaddüt ediyoruz.

Başka bir mevzu da, yeni menajerimiz Can Bilgin. Üniversitede tanıştığım bu arkadaş, başımıza menajer oldu… Yaptığı iyi işlerin ve düzgün kişiliğinin yanısıra, Denizli’li olması, hatta Dünyacan ve Canberk’le 1 sene aynı lisede okuması onun hakkındaki düşüncelerimizi oldukça iyi yönde etkilemeye devam ediyor. Memleket başka birşey… Can Bilgin’e bizimle uğraşma konusunda başarılar diliyorum…

So….today I’ve been kinda busy so not able to post (hence the sleeping lemurs)………..It’s Actually AMAZING how busy I is………..Everyday I seem to be doing sumthing….TY surely is the SHIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!

So…..RENT!!!!! My school has decided to do the school edition as our musical this year…the first school in Ireland!!!!!! I cannae explain how excited I am about this….IT’S RENT!!!!!!!!!! Audtions were on Wednesday…..and the cast should be announced this week….so expect another post on it soon!!!!

As well as Rent….I have been on TY retreats…..researching mushrooms…..trying to be an entrepeneur…..and orchestraing!!!!!!!!

Next week I only have 1 day of school cos of Peer Education and Monitor Retreat (Me in a room with about 9 other boys…bliss!!!! )

Soooooo….this TY thing is taking a lot of my time…..but I did manage to reunionise today with my CTYIzens…and it was just lovely to see even just a few of them….and to rub in that I’m doing nothing in TY!!!!!!…..and see The September Issue with Julie Anne and Emily…but sadly not Yvanne or Fiona….

It was AMAZING!!!! very insightful into Anna Wintour….she really does love what she does….and I think it also shows that she isnt as “bitchy” as it has been claimed she is…….after watching this I think that she is just very decisive in what she wants and always moving forward….and while she loves fashion she doesnt get attached to anything so is capable of discarding things without fear……

The woman does know fashion….and has never made a major mistake in her career before….so I don’t see why she would ever feel the need to worry…….other things I learned from the movie….Sienna Miller is a shit model….Anna uses her daughter to make some decisions….and her Creative Director, Grace Coddington, while Anna admits she is a genius…..is too attached to some of the photos she is involved in shooting…..

Oh…and the outfits were FIERCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must work in Vogue…….and play tennis with Anna!!! (I think my backhand is better than hers…)
