So, here goes.  At work last week our conference room computer decided to commit ceremonial hari-kari.  I think it dishonored the family and felt that the best way to solve the problem was the use of a blade through the gut and then up and to the right.  But that’s beyond the point. 

I ordered a computer immediately from globalcomputer.com.  A Lenovo refurb for around $330.  It had a Core2 duo processor and 2 gigs of ram.  A hell of a deal if I ever saw one.  So on it’s way it was to me.  That was not to be.  There inventory was goofed up.  I realized about two days later, which was Wednesday last, when it had not shipped there was a problem.  I called my rep, Nick, who is a great guy, for the record.  He informed me that they were backordered and would not be in for quite some time.  He suggested that we search for alternatives.  I thought this was okay, as I don’t need to use that computer until the Thursday after Thanksgiving. 

We ordered another, new Lenovo desktop.  It showed “Order Today, Ships Today” with no disclaimers about being nearly out of stock or only a few left, so I felt comfortable.  I also had to order a video card and an extra gig of ram.  Come to find out Friday of last week, they too were out of these other Lenovo’s.  I asked my representative to contact Lenovo and see if they could just drop ship it to me.  I had a good price and paying slightly more for the shipping would really not be a big deal.  I was still under budget. 

It get’s better, Lenovo say, “We don’t ship to end-users.”  Pardon my fucking french, but that is the biggest load of shit I have ever heard.  Are you fucking serious?  “No, we will never go out of our way to help out a customer, not a chance.”  Fucking assholes!  Well, I ask Nick to have the buyer put some pressure on them, I am near a deadline.  He did, but it was to no avail. 

I’m not mad at Global, I’m mad at Lenovo.  They guaranteed the product to Global and fell short.  When the blowback occurred, they didn’t own up and fix the problem.  It’s a big pile of shitty responses to a problem that made me pissed.  Again, globalcomputer.com is a great company, they do good work.  However, I am never buying Lenovo from them again.  For that matter, I am never buying a Lenovo again.  I strayed from HP and got burned.  Mama, I’m coming home!

So, in a bind I was.  I marched my happy, amex carrying ass over to MicroCenter.  Ahhh, Mecca!  It’s like TigerDirect, but without the need to wait!  Jason, the salesman there was awesome.  We realized that since I needed a small form factor desktop, I would be better off building one than buying a boxed unit.  It has been sometime since I have assembled a PC from scratch, as it is generally not doable, given my schedule. 

Got everything home this afternoon and was ready to go in about 30 minutes.  Windows 7 install took all of 1 hour and was brilliantly simple.  No drivers were missing, it just worked.  Good work Microsoft and good work Asus on the board.  It was all so simple, compared to some other driver nightmares I have had in the past.

Remember Kids Clicking Kids, the program that Michael Muller cofounded via the Art of Elysium to inspire hospitalized kids through the power of photography? Well, a couple of weeks ago, Microsoft very kindly donated laptops to each of the children in KCK’s dialysis program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, whose Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism is one of the two largest programs in the nation for dialysis of children with chronic kidney failure.

Laptopping.com is presenting a fresh release of Lenovo’s ThinkPad X100 netbook rumors.
Lenovo is going to release the ThinkPad X100e, a 11.6-inch AMD-based ultraportable business laptop, according to leaked specifications.

Along with the AMD Athlon Neo MV40 1.6GHz single-core processor, RS780 chipset, and the 11.6-inch 1366×768 display (LED ThinkPad screen, I most suspect), the ThinkPad X100e includes up to 4GB of RAM, up to 320GB of hard drive space, a 3- or 6-cell battery for up to 5.1 hours of run time, optional 3G and GPS receivers, a full-size keyboard with trackpoint, a multi-touch trackpad.

The 3-pound mini-notebook also sports a 0.3MP web camera and microphone, stereo speakers, 802.11 WiFi, Gigabit LAN port, optional Bluetooth, three USB ports, a 4-in 1 media card reader, and a VGA port.

The laptop will will be available in black, white, or red, and will start at $449 US reportedly. There’s no info on availability date.

Have you ever noticed that some of the latest technology just slowly leaks and leaks, and so by the time it is finally announced, it really isn’t that big of a surprise? For example, that elusive Mac Tablet we’ve been hearing so much about, and now the latest ThinkPad from Lenovo.

The X100e has an 11.6 inch display, and it has an AMD Neo processor as well as wireless connectivity options like WWAN, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth. The whole thing weighs about 3 pounds and includes a webcam and many other lovable pictures. As for the battery life, it’s pretty good at 5.1 hours.

So how much is it? It will be about $500, and available in white, black, and red. I believe that the release date is planned for January.

The X100e is “positioned to be a viable mix of the portability of a netbook with the performance of a laptop, at an affordable price”.

Too bad that they didn’t have the X100E done by Christmas. They probably could have really made a killing for the holiday. Oh well, who am I do critique Lenovo’s selling and marketing strategies?

I suppose that I’ll have to stop by Lenovo’s booth at CES in January and try it out for myself. Until then, I’ll just keep clicking away on my own laptop.

ASUS is trying to increase notebook market share and allegedly has talked to Toshiba about buying its notebook business. Toshiba meanwhile occupies fifth place both worldwide and in the US and only considers netbooks a small portion of its business, as most of its sales focus on regular and often large notebooks.A move of the sort would be the second major consolidation in notebooks following Acer’s buyouts of Gateway and Packard Bell. It may create pressure on Dell and Lenovo and could also have an impact on Toshiba’s sagging influence on the American market, where Apple is its immediate rival.

The Square Trade study showed Apple’s laptops to be more reliable than those from Dell, Lenovo, Acer and HP. It also shows that they were only marginally behind the most reliable brands, namely Asus, Toshiba and Sony (see chart above).

Based on over 30,000 new laptops and netbooks the study shows that on average (over the whole market) 1 in 3 laptops fail within 3 years. Netbooks are also 20% more unreliable than other laptops.
