Restoring Time Machine Backups on a Different Computer even Over SMB or AFP

There are many situations that require you to restore backups to different computers, other than the

There are many situations that require you to restore backups to different computers, other than the one from where the data was originally backed up from. In the case of Apple’s Time Machine the restore procedure to different machines is not very intuitive. You have to use the “secret” option key…

There is a supported way to restore Time Machine backups of other computers using the “option-key” click on the Time Machine menu. If you want to use it just do the following:

Connect the Time Machine disk to the Mac you want to restore the files to

Set the “Show time machine status in the menu bar” In System Preferences -> Time Machine.

Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and keeping the mouse button pressed, press the “Option” key.

Select “Browse Other Time Machine Disks”

Select the disk you want

click Use Selected Disk

The Time Machine will open with the selected disk and you can use it to restore the files.

If, like me, you are using a non supported Time Machine configuration, where the backup disk is mounted using SMB or AFP (see this post on how to enable that) then the procedure above will not work directly. In my case I backup to my Buffalo TeraStation NAS, and the “Browse Other Time Machine Disks” window shows up empty, with no disk to select.

In order for this to work you need to first mount the Time Machine disk by hand in using the command line.

Mount the shared folder where your Time Machine backups are stored

Open a Terminal window and cd to the Time Machine volume. in my case I called it backups

sudo cd /Volumes/backups

use hdiutil to mount the specific Time Machine .sparsebundle file

sudo hdiutil attach <time_machine_file.sparsebundle>

Now you should be able to see the mounted volume in Finder, with all the backups listed as folders, and you can copy any files directly from it. Remember that mounting the disk may take some time due to the size of the disk and network connection speed, especially If you do this over a WiFi network.

Another option is to repeat the supported Time Machine procedure outlined in the beginning of this post. You should now see the mounted disk as a Time Machine disk. Select the the disk and click “Use Selected Disk” and Time Machine will open on the selected disk just like with a Time Machine supported back up disk.

Personally I like to copy them directly from the Finder but your preference may vary so I document both ways of achieving this goal. Hope this helps.

With Snow Leopard: 18 seconds”

If you’re like me and you don’t like Safari 4 for the one reason you have no progress bar, what’s all that about, having said that even Google Chrome is the same, but anyway, for Snow Leopard users its finally solved.

1. Download the same Safari 3.2.3 portable by clicking here! (Open in a new tab/window)

2. In a Finder window containing the file “Safari 3.app”, right click and “Show Package Content”

3. Open the only folder available marked “Contents”, then “MacOS”, then double click the Terminal file marked “TrueSafari” and a Terminal window will open and as will Safari 3.

4. However if you close the Terminal window you will also close Safari 3 as that is preventing Snow Leopard from knowing what OS the application requires. Safari 3 runs as it does on Leopard in my experience.

TIP; Right click the “TrueSafari” command and “Create Alias”, copy the alias file to a more convenient place, Documents etc, you then can launch Safari 3 by double clicking that alias!

Since I’ve been glued to YouTube pretty much all day (having internet at home means never having to say “I’m bored” apparently), I thought it appropriate to share a few vids. My brain seems to want stuff about large predators (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!) so today you get leopards:

Leopard #1: The apex predator of the Antarctic

This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I have an extraordinary level of respect (i.e., I’m TERRIFIED) of leopard seals (I think I saw some movie about huskies or something, and a leopard seal featured in the only memorable scene…it was essentially a big “BOO!!!”, with teeth. I shrieked and jumped 5 feet in the air). What an amazing experience for that photographer. Leopard seals are the second largest seal in the Antarctic, after southern elephant seals. Most sources will say that they are named for the distinctive spotting on their short coats, but I say it’s because of the impressive array of chompers, including very prominent canines. Their long teeth serve as krill-sieves; the tiny shrimp-like crustaceans are a staple of their diet. The larger seals (like our friend in the video) hunt penguins along pack ice or island shorelines, while the littles must make do with fish and squid.

Leopard #2: Unlikely surrogate cares for infant baboon

It’s a bit sad, but a fascinating story nonetheless. Two things strike me as incredible here: 1. the fact that the infantile characteristics shared among mammal species are SO pronounced and can elicit such strong inter-species responses (come on, I dare you to tell me you didn’t just want to scoop that wee baby up when you saw his little face); and 2. the familiarity of so many of the leopard’s movements – it’s eerily like watching a larger version of my housecats.

We also saw a jaguar but he was so stressed about the whole cage thing he just kept going back and forth and back and forth behind the bars so I was never able to get a good photo of him. He didn’t look happy at all and it made us all quite sad. I didn’t get any photos of my favourite wild animal in the whole world – the lynxes either. They were sleeping but a bit too far away and my camera don’t reach that far (that’s why I wish for a new camera ) but they looked very cute and cuddly and I think I asked boyfriend to give me one for my big 25:th coming up soon like a hundred times. He said I’d get one. He also said I’d get a tiger, a lion baby, some monkeys, a zebra, and that I could have a giraffe down on the street and it could reach up with it’s tall neck to our balcony on the fifth floor. We’ll have to keep the zebra in somebody other’s apartment of course – otherwise the tiger and the lion will eat it. I even suggested that me and Linda (my special lady friend) could have shared custody over a tiger. I think it’s very clever. That way we can repair everything he’s destroyed (chewed furniture, limbs) one week and let him come over the next.

When the Lehigh Home Club hosted the 2009 Lehigh-Lafayette Pub Night in advance of the rivals’

When the Lehigh Home Club hosted the 2009 Lehigh-Lafayette Pub Night in advance of the rivals’ 145th gridiron meeting, Club President Dennis Zehner ‘99 was hesitant to reprise his 2008 photo (immediately below) with the Lafayette Leopard. Then a fellow Lehigh alum reminded him that Lehigh won 2008 game and suggested that it might be good luck to do so again.

So the 2009 photo was snapped (see below), and less than 72 hours later, the Brown and White scored another upset over the Leopards.

“Coincidence? Probably,” Zehner said. “But a new Lehigh-Lafayette tradition has begun … at least until it stops working. But if the streak continues long enough, I expect my successors to carry it on.”

If there are problems with information in your mailboxes, it may be necessary to reindex your messages. During this process, certain Mail folders on your computer are moved to another location, such as your desktop. When Mail is reopened, it rereads and reindexes all messages in all local mailboxes. The reindexing process can take several minutes depending on how many messages are in your local mailboxes.

When Mail detects a problem with your mailboxes, it may alert you that it needs to repair them by reindexing your messages. At other times, you can reindex messages yourself. To do so, quit Mail and, in the Mail folder in your home Library folder, move the Envelope Index file and any folders that begin with “Mac-”, “Exchange-”, or “IMAP-” to a different location, such as your desktop. When you reopen Mail, it reindexes all messages.
