Back in October, illustrious Parisian filmmaker and all-around sexy man Vincent Moon was in town filming a series of Take-Away Shows of Montreal bands for the super-amazing blog, La Blogotheque. The Take-Away Shows are an ongoing series of guerrilla-style live videos of bands performing in unlikely, often public, often intimate spaces. The most famous Take-Away show is probably this one. Long story short, we filmed an Adam & The Amethysts performance in my favorite pierogi restaurant/Polish deli, but the footage apparently turned out not-so-good and the session was never released. They assured me that it wasn’t my fault…

Luckily, the also-illustrious Ryan Muir took some beautiful photos. It was a really interesting experience to sing and play guitar and maybe make people feel kind of uncomfortable at a place where I go to eat pierogis about once or twice a week. The whole time I thought I was really pissing off the staff who had to weave around us to deliver people their orders as we played, but in the end, I got some really nice comments from them about my singing voice, and I think it was a special experience for them too (and hopefully for the  customers who expected pierogis and cabbage rolls and borscht, not a folk band).

Hopefully the awkwardness of the situation was laced with some whimsy. I think it was. It’s not every day you spontaneously get serenaded by a cello and bumped into by a Parisian film crew while you’re trying to eat your Sunday borscht.

Last Sunday I saw Phoenix live at Metropolis.  It got me all up in their shit again and after following them on Twitter, I fell upon La Blogotheque.  This blog has been running “Les Concerts a Emporter” which are basically acoustic street concerts by pretty big bands. They recently shot Phoenix in Paris, check out the videos below.

You don’t need to be French to appreciate the Parisian blog La Blogotheque – their Take-Away Shows do away with language barriers and showcase some of the best music today. From of Montreal to Priscilla Ahn, from The Shins to Fleet Foxes, from Bon Iver to St. Vincent, a stunning diversity of artists have been immortalized in the music video podcasts. As a plus these shows are often filmed in the city streets or in unorthodox locations, giving them an ambiance and flavor different from your average concert.

The latest installment in this series comes from the boys from Versailles, Phoenix. They embrace their French roots wholly and completely, performing songs from Wolfgang and It’s Never Been Like That as they roam the streets of Paris, wreaking havoc and feel good altpop, ultimately culminating in a performance at the foot of the freakin’ Eiffel Tower. How epic is that?

They were said to be always scared, meticulous, and not really the perfect match for our little adventure in a very, very touristic area in Paris. Nonsense. Oh, yes, sure they didn’t go after people passing by, neither climbed on top of cars, but they played the game and seemed happy to do so. They improvised a show for a shy, almost unsure yet growing audience on the Trocadero square, hijacked a tourists bus replacing the audioguide by “Lisztomania”, and then, they played a last song under a bridge, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Sigur Ros, performing in the small Parisian restuarant, la Closerie des Lilas

1. The hauntingly excellent Sigur Ros‘ appearance on the Paris-based fantastic music + performance blog La Blogotheque’s super dupes Les Concerts A Emporter, aka in English Takeaway Shows. If you are not familiar with the Takeaway Shows, well, here is your chance to get cozy with one of the most fun, creative and intimate things going on with current music. Filmmaker Vincent Moon shoots bands performing acoustically in an ever-changing array of impromptu and unexpected places from small Parisian alleys (Of Montreal vs Axe Riverboy), to hotel rooms (Tom Jones), to an abandoned turn-of-the-century exhibition hall (The Fleet Foxes) and in this case Sigur Ros sitting in booths and playing at the very small, very old, and exceptionally traditional Paris restaurant la Closerie des Lilas. El álbum homónimo  de début de esta banda de indie folk fue uno de los más aclamados, justamente,  por la prensa musical independiente el pasado año 2008.

Pues en el mes de junio de ese año, los editores de La Blogothèque decidieron grabar algo con ellos. Cuentan en su página que, cuando los conocieron en febrero en San Francisco, estaban viviendo en una caravana estilo hippie y eran una banda de chicos con el pelo largo y sin preocupaciones. Eso era antes del éxito, supongo que algo les habrá cambiado la vida desde entonces.

Este es el video para Les Concerts à emporter que grabaron en París. Los realizadores de la cinta querían buscar un lugar vacío y con eco para la voz y los instrumentos de los Fleet Foxes. A través de unos amigos, consiguieron acceder a un ala abandonado del Grand Palais parisino (la sala de exposiciones de la Exposición Universal de París de 1900). Y allí fueron a grabar los de Seattle,  aunque estaban bastante cansados por el concierto que habían dado la noche anterior. Cuentan que el cantante se quedaba ensimismado por la altura sobrecogedora de los techos y el vacío de las estancias. En el lugar sólo había pasillos, puertas rotas y algún pájaro que pasaba de vez en cuando. Las dos primeras tomas fueron desechadas porque el grupo estaba nervioso al verse tocando en este lugar tan particular. Después ya realizaron esta gran interpretación y, al acabar, fueron a los jardines del Hospital de los Inválidos a relajarse. Fue en ese momento cuando grabaron la canción Sun Giant, que aparece al principio del video.

Les concerts à emporter, or, The Take Away Shows, are a series of music videos of sorts, mosly filmed in Paris using minimal handheld equipment. Shot in a single take, with minimal editing and little preparation, these videos are simple and exquisite.  Most of the musicians featured in these videos are of the not-quite-famous variety, but don’t let that stop you. This video, featuring Beirut, is an excellent example.

 Según los creadores de esta estupenda web francesa sobre música independiente, La Blogotèque es fundamentalmente un blog de música por su formato cronológico. Y eso lo dicen a pesar de tener tantas secciones y apartados que llega a parecerse más a una revista de música online. También lo dicen aunque esté a cargo de profesionales del periodismo musical y de profesionales de la realización de videos.

   A parte del blog en sí, hay que destacar su sección llamada  Les Concerts à Emporter (conciertos para llevar). Se trata de videos que se pueden ver online  o, incluso, descargar durante algún tiempo. Cada semana se emite una filmación con un grupo o artista invitado  realizada principalmente en las calles de una ciudad, un bar, un piso o un parque. Se deja en la grabación los posibles incidentes que surgen espontáneamente o  las imperfecciones en la ejecución de la música. Sin montaje, con un sonido sucio y un objetivo: capturar un instante, filmar la música de forma espontánea, es decir, sin preparación ni artificios. Otro aliciente, para los amantes de la ciudad de la luz,  se encuentra en que estos videos suelen estar rodados en París.

   Les Concerts à Emporter comenzaron a realizarse en el 2006 por Vincent Moon y Chryde (fundadores del blog) a los que se les ha unido bastante gente que ha rodado conciertos en otras ciudades del globo.

   Aconsejo la visita al blog a todos aquellos que les guste la música en directo y, no necesariamente en grandes recintos ni festivales.

   http://www.blogotheque.net/  Aunque la página está escrita en francés, existe una opción para cambiar al inglés. De vez en cuando se podrá disfrutar en este humilde blog de algún video de esta web con su explicación en nuestro idioma.

  Un ejemplo es este video de The Kooks. Fue grabado en las calles cercanas a la sala parisina donde la banda actuaría esa misma noche…No cuento más, es mejor verlo:

Británicos y franceses se lo curran para ponérselo difícil a bandas consagradas o primerizas. Ya no valen los unplugged de toda la vida. Ahora, lo instrumental, tiene que venir acompañada del virtuosismo, el intimismo, la interacción con desconocidos, el ingenio, los alardes de sonar bien aún con acústicas tremebundas, los decorados de la vida real. ¿Son nuestras bandas engendros prefabricados? ¿Suena mejor el señor de mi parada de metro? ¿Son éstos músicos reales?

Aquí dos ejemplos de que todavía hay gente que cree en la música, que no se corta para agarrar una guitarra y defender sus temas donde sea: las Black Cab Sessions y Les Concerts à Emporter de la Blogothèque.

Coja usted a, pongamos por ejemplo, a Calexico, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie o The Raveonettes, métalos en un taxi y dele vueltas y más vueltas por Londres. No se va a cansar. Ni se va a arrepentir.

Si por el contrario, prefiere llevar a su banda elegida a lugares emblemáticos de París, o quizá no tan emblemáticos, pero eso sí, apañados, puede que la banda les haga caso. Sabemos que gente como The Kooks, Grizzly Bear, The Shins o los Arcade Fire se dejan, con resultados muy sorprendentes (en especial, éstos últimos, Win, como siempre, conmovedor altavoz en mano).

Pero aquí dejo uno de los grupos revelación de éste año. No puedo dejar de escucharlos. Intento desintoxicarme, pero de uno modo u otro, siempre vuelven a mi cabeza, llenos de buen rollo y ritmillo. Ideal para mañana de domingo tontas, resacas, ratillos previos a salir de marcha, viajes con amigos y todo tipo de eventos varios. Vampire Weekend.

Para empezar, me gustan porque son frescos, porque hacen sencillo lo difícil. Porque suenan a algo familiar y entrañable, porque son elegantes y tienen charme para dar y regalar, porque recurren a África y consiguen que nadie se acuerde de Paul Simon, porque Ezra Koenig tiene una voz apabullante y un estilazo bárbaro cantando y porque sus letras son surrealistas, inteligentes, me transmiten un montón de cosas y me hacen reir. Bueno, y porque son colegas de The MGMT y apoyan a Obama. A día de hoy, ¿qué más se puede pedir?

Man Man, continues to prove their awesomeness no matter what environment they end up in.

From Paradise Rock Club this past April (with Yeasayer) to the streets of Paris (with La Blogotheque), Honus Honus, Pow Pow, Cougar, Sergei Sogay, and Chang Wang can always draw a crowd.

i love whistling songs (high on the list: andrew bird’s “a nervous tick motion to the head”. nobody whistles better than him.) and i can’t explain why. whatever it is, when i heard the first whistles on man man’s appearance in the latest issue of la blogothèque’s the take-away shows, i got really interested. i happen to love the take-away shows a lot too (also high on the list: the elevator sequence for the arcade fire, the staircase orchestra for beirut, and the metro sing-a-long party for yeasayer). by the end of the man man episode, i had placed an order for their latest album rabbit habits released earlier this year on anti-. oh, and for that first take-away show song they did? it’s an older song called “van helsing boombox”, a little paradox with a big heart that’s got a bit of something for everybody to have.

Black Cab Sessions are filmed in London, on the premise of shooting one (musical) band, in one cab, in one take. Seeing Wolf Parade tonight at First Ave, and thought they’d be included in the list of eccentric and select group so far filmed, but alas are not. So, I revert back to a classic: The Raveonettes perform “Dead Sound.”

Update: just referred a friend over to Black Cab Sessions site and was referred over to Les concerts a Emporter, in France. Along similar lines as Black Cab Sessions, with nearly impromptu staged musical videos, but this feels a little more arty, and…it’s on the go.

Acho que nunca nem citei por aqui o Take Away Show (Les Concerts À Emporter). A produção francesa coloca figurinhas indies e alguns mainstreams em apresentações pouco convencionais ou pelo menos diferente das usuais. Áudio e vídeo ganham um tratamento todo especial dando características únicas que chegam ao seu computador em forma de podcast. Produzido pelo pessoal do La Blogotheque, o programa chega a sua 88ª edição com a participação dos bagunceiros do Black Lips – que aliás, foram bem comportados. Vale a pena ver a apresentação do Arcade Fire e do Cold War Kids pra entender realmente qual é o espírito do podcast. Mas tem muita gente, desde o recente Vampire Weekend, passando pelo genial Beirut até o clássico Divine Comedy. Vale conferir.
